तथा तु पृच्छन्तमतीव पार्था; न्वैचित्रवीर्यं तमचिन्तयित्वा। उवाच कर्णो धृतराष्ट्रपुत्रं; प्रहर्षयन्संसदि कौरवाणाम् ॥५-६१-१॥
tathā tu pṛcchantamatīva pārthā; nvaititravīryaṃ tamacintayitvā. uvāca karṇo dhṛtarāṣṭraputraṃ; praharṣayansaṃsadi kauravāṇām ॥5-61-1॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तु (tu) - but; पृच्छन्तम् (pṛcchantam) - asking; अतीव (atīva) - extremely; पार्था (pārthā) - sons of Pṛthā; न्वैचित्रवीर्यं (nvaititravīryaṃ) - Vichitravirya; तम् (tam) - him; अचिन्तयित्वा (acintayitvā) - without considering; उवाच (uvāca) - said; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; धृतराष्ट्रपुत्रम् (dhṛtarāṣṭraputram) - son of Dhritarashtra; प्रहर्षयन् (praharṣayan) - gladdening; संसदि (saṃsadi) - in the assembly; कौरवाणाम् (kauravāṇām) - of the Kauravas;]
(Thus, but asking extremely, the sons of Pṛthā, Vichitravirya, without considering him, Karṇa said to the son of Dhritarashtra, gladdening in the assembly of the Kauravas.)
Thus, the sons of Pṛthā, despite being extremely inquisitive, did not consider Vichitravirya. Karṇa, in the assembly of the Kauravas, spoke to the son of Dhritarashtra, bringing joy to them.
मिथ्या प्रतिज्ञाय मया यदस्त्रं; रामाद्धृतं ब्रह्मपुरं पुरस्तात्। विज्ञाय तेनास्मि तदैवमुक्त; स्तवान्तकालेऽप्रतिभास्यतीति ॥५-६१-२॥

[मिथ्या (mithyā) - false; प्रतिज्ञाय (pratijñāya) - having promised; मया (mayā) - by me; यत् (yat) - which; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; रामात् (rāmāt) - from Rāma; धृतं (dhṛtaṃ) - taken; ब्रह्मपुरं (brahmapuraṃ) - Brahma's abode; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - before; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - knowing; तेन (tena) - by him; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तदैव (tadaiva) - then itself; उक्त (ukta) - told; स्तव (stava) - praise; अन्तकाले (antakāle) - at the end time; अप्रतिभास्यति (apratibhāsyati) - will not appear; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Having falsely promised, the weapon which was taken by me from Rāma, knowing it, he told me then itself that it will not appear at the end time of praise.)

महापराधे ह्यपि संनतेन; महर्षिणाहं गुरुणा च शप्तः। शक्तः प्रदग्धुं ह्यपि तिग्मतेजाः; ससागरामप्यवनिं महर्षिः ॥५-६१-३॥
mahāparādhe hyapi saṁnatena; maharṣiṇāhaṁ guruṇā ca śaptaḥ। śaktaḥ pradagdhuṁ hyapi tigmatejāḥ; sasāgarāmapyavaniṁ maharṣiḥ ॥5-61-3॥
[महापराधे (mahāparādhe) - in great offense; हि (hi) - indeed; अपि (api) - also; संनतेन (saṁnatena) - by the humble one; महर्षिणा (maharṣiṇā) - by the great sage; अहम् (aham) - I; गुरुणा (guruṇā) - by the teacher; च (ca) - and; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; प्रदग्धुम् (pradagdhum) - to burn; हि (hi) - indeed; अपि (api) - also; तिग्मतेजाः (tigmatejāḥ) - sharp in brilliance; ससागराम् (sasāgarām) - with the oceans; अपि (api) - even; अवनीम् (avanīm) - the earth; महर्षिः (maharṣiḥ) - the great sage;]
(In great offense indeed also by the humble one; by the great sage I was cursed by the teacher and. Capable to burn indeed also sharp in brilliance; with the oceans even the earth the great sage.)
Even in great offense, I was cursed by the great sage and teacher, though I am capable of burning the earth with the oceans with my sharp brilliance.
प्रसादितं ह्यस्य मया मनोऽभू; च्छुश्रूषया स्वेन च पौरुषेण। ततस्तदस्त्रं मम सावशेषं; तस्मात्समर्थोऽस्मि ममैष भारः ॥५-६१-४॥
prasāditaṃ hyasya mayā mano'bhū; cchuśrūṣayā svena ca pauruṣeṇa। tatastadastraṃ mama sāvaśeṣaṃ; tasmātsamartho'smi mamaiṣa bhāraḥ ॥5-61-4॥
[प्रसादितं (prasāditaṃ) - pleased; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - his; मया (mayā) - by me; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; च्छुश्रूषया (cchuśrūṣayā) - by service; स्वेन (svena) - by my own; च (ca) - and; पौरुषेण (pauruṣeṇa) - effort; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत् (tat) - that; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; मम (mama) - my; सावशेषं (sāvaśeṣaṃ) - remaining; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; अस्मि (asmi) - am; मम (mama) - my; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; भारः (bhāraḥ) - burden;]
(Indeed, his mind was pleased by me through service and my own effort. Then that weapon is my remaining; therefore, I am capable of this burden of mine.)
"Indeed, I have pleased his mind through my service and own effort. Therefore, I am capable of bearing this remaining burden of my weapon."
निमेषमात्रं तमृषिप्रसाद; मवाप्य पाञ्चालकरूषमत्स्यान्। निहत्य पार्थांश्च सपुत्रपौत्राँ; ल्लोकानहं शस्त्रजितान्प्रपत्स्ये ॥५-६१-५॥
nimeṣamātraṃ tamṛṣiprasāda; mavāpya pāñcālakarūṣamatsyān। nihatya pārthāṃśca saputrapautrām̐; llokānahaṃ śastrajitānprapatsye ॥5-61-5॥
[निमेषमात्रं (nimeṣamātraṃ) - in a moment; तमृषिप्रसाद (tamṛṣiprasāda) - by the sage's grace; मवाप्य (mavāpya) - having obtained; पाञ्चालकरूषमत्स्यान् (pāñcālakarūṣamatsyān) - Panchalas, Karushas, and Matsyas; निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; पार्थान् (pārthān) - the sons of Pritha; च (ca) - and; सपुत्रपौत्रान् (saputrapautrān) - with sons and grandsons; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अहम् (aham) - I; शस्त्रजितान् (śastrajitān) - won by weapons; प्रपत्स्ये (prapatsye) - shall attain;]
(In a moment, by the sage's grace, having obtained the Panchalas, Karushas, and Matsyas, having slain the sons of Pritha with sons and grandsons, I shall attain the worlds won by weapons.)
In a moment, by the sage's grace, I will conquer the Panchalas, Karushas, and Matsyas, and after defeating the sons of Pritha along with their sons and grandsons, I shall reach the worlds won through warfare.
पितामहस्तिष्ठतु ते समीपे; द्रोणश्च सर्वे च नरेन्द्रमुख्याः। यथाप्रधानेन बलेन यात्वा; पार्थान्हनिष्यामि ममैष भारः ॥५-६१-६॥
pitāmahastiṣṭhatu te samīpe; droṇaśca sarve ca narendramukhyāḥ। yathāpradhānena balena yātvā; pārthān haniṣyāmi mama eṣa bhāraḥ ॥5-61-6॥
[पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - grandfather; तिष्ठतु (tiṣṭhatu) - stay; ते (te) - your; समीपे (samīpe) - near; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; नरेन्द्रमुख्याः (narendramukhyāḥ) - chiefs of kings; यथा (yathā) - as; प्रधानेन (pradhānena) - with the main; बलेन (balena) - force; यात्वा (yātvā) - having gone; पार्थान् (pārthān) - sons of Pritha; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - I shall kill; मम (mama) - my; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; भारः (bhāraḥ) - burden;]
(Grandfather, stay near you; Drona and all the chief kings. With the main force, having gone, I shall kill the sons of Pritha; this is my burden.)

एवं ब्रुवाणं तमुवाच भीष्मः; किं कत्थसे कालपरीतबुद्धे। न कर्ण जानासि यथा प्रधाने; हते हताः स्युर्धृतराष्ट्रपुत्राः ॥५-६१-७॥
evaṃ bruvāṇaṃ tamuvāca bhīṣmaḥ; kiṃ katthase kālaparītabuddhe। na karṇa jānāsi yathā pradhāne; hate hatāḥ syurdhṛtarāṣṭraputrāḥ ॥5-61-7॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; ब्रुवाणम् (bruvāṇam) - speaking; तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; किम् (kim) - why; कत्थसे (katthase) - do you boast; कालपरीतबुद्धे (kālaparītabuddhe) - one whose intellect is overcome by time; न (na) - not; कर्ण (karṇa) - Karna; जानासि (jānāsi) - do you know; यथा (yathā) - how; प्रधाने (pradhāne) - in the battle; हते (hate) - slain; हताः (hatāḥ) - slain; स्युः (syuḥ) - would be; धृतराष्ट्रपुत्राः (dhṛtarāṣṭraputrāḥ) - sons of Dhritarashtra;]
(Thus, Bhishma said to him who was speaking: "Why do you boast, O one whose intellect is overcome by time? Do you not know, Karna, how in the battle, if slain, the sons of Dhritarashtra would be slain?")
Bhishma addressed him, questioning his boasting nature, and pointed out that if Karna were to be slain in battle, it would lead to the downfall of Dhritarashtra's sons.
यत्खाण्डवं दाहयता कृतं हि; कृष्णद्वितीयेन धनञ्जयेन। श्रुत्वैव तत्कर्म नियन्तुमात्मा; शक्यस्त्वया वै सह बान्धवेन ॥५-६१-८॥
yatkhāṇḍavaṃ dāhayatā kṛtaṃ hi; kṛṣṇadvitīyena dhanañjayena। śrutvaiva tatkarma niyantumātmā; śakyastvayā vai saha bāndhavena ॥5-61-8॥
[यत्खाण्डवं (yatkhāṇḍavam) - the Khandava forest; दाहयता (dāhayatā) - by burning; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; हि (hi) - indeed; कृष्णद्वितीयेन (kṛṣṇadvitīyena) - with Krishna as the second; धनञ्जयेन (dhanañjayena) - by Dhananjaya (Arjuna); श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एव (eva) - certainly; तत्कर्म (tatkarma) - that act; नियन्तुम् (niyantum) - to control; आत्मा (ātmā) - yourself; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - is able; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वै (vai) - indeed; सह (saha) - with; बान्धवेन (bāndhavena) - a relative;]
(The act of burning the Khandava forest was indeed done by Dhananjaya (Arjuna) with Krishna as the second. Having heard of that act, you are indeed able to control yourself with a relative.)
The burning of the Khandava forest was accomplished by Arjuna with Krishna's assistance. Upon hearing of this deed, you are capable of self-control with the help of a relative.
यां चापि शक्तिं त्रिदशाधिपस्ते; ददौ महात्मा भगवान्महेन्द्रः। भस्मीकृतां तां पतितां विशीर्णां; चक्राहतां द्रक्ष्यसि केशवेन ॥५-६१-९॥
yāṃ cāpi śaktiṃ tridaśādhipaste; dadau mahātmā bhagavānmahendraḥ। bhasmīkṛtāṃ tāṃ patitāṃ viśīrṇāṃ; cakrāhatāṃ drakṣyasi keśavena ॥5-61-9॥
[याम् (yām) - which; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; शक्तिम् (śaktim) - weapon; त्रिदशाधिपः (tridaśādhipaḥ) - lord of the thirty (Indra); ते (te) - to you; ददौ (dadau) - gave; महात्मा (mahātmā) - great soul; भगवान् (bhagavān) - divine; महेन्द्रः (mahendraḥ) - Mahendra; भस्मीकृताम् (bhasmīkṛtām) - reduced to ashes; ताम् (tām) - that; पतिताम् (patitām) - fallen; विशीर्णाम् (viśīrṇām) - shattered; चक्राहताम् (cakrāhatām) - struck by the discus; द्रक्ष्यसि (drakṣyasi) - you will see; केशवेन (keśavena) - by Keshava;]
(The weapon which the lord of the thirty (Indra) also gave to you, O great soul, divine Mahendra, you will see it reduced to ashes, fallen, shattered, struck by the discus by Keshava.)
The weapon given to you by Indra, the lord of the gods, will be seen destroyed, reduced to ashes, and shattered by the discus of Keshava.
यस्ते शरः सर्पमुखो विभाति; सदाग्र्यमाल्यैर्महितः प्रयत्नात्। स पाण्डुपुत्राभिहतः शरौघैः; सह त्वया यास्यति कर्ण नाशम् ॥५-६१-१०॥
yaste śaraḥ sarpamukho vibhāti; sadāgryamālyairmahitaḥ prayatnāt। sa pāṇḍuputrābhihataḥ śaraughaiḥ; saha tvayā yāsyati karṇa nāśam ॥5-61-10॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; ते (te) - your; शरः (śaraḥ) - arrow; सर्पमुखः (sarpamukhaḥ) - serpent-faced; विभाति (vibhāti) - shines; सदा (sadā) - always; अग्र्यमाल्यैः (agryamālyaiḥ) - with excellent garlands; महितः (mahitaḥ) - adorned; प्रयत्नात् (prayatnāt) - with effort; सः (saḥ) - he; पाण्डुपुत्राभिहतः (pāṇḍuputrābhihataḥ) - struck by the sons of Pandu; शरौघैः (śaraughaiḥ) - with a multitude of arrows; सह (saha) - along with; त्वया (tvayā) - you; यास्यति (yāsyati) - will go; कर्ण (karṇa) - Karna; नाशम् (nāśam) - destruction;]
(The arrow of yours, serpent-faced, shines; always adorned with excellent garlands with effort. He, struck by the sons of Pandu with a multitude of arrows, along with you, Karna, will go to destruction.)
Your serpent-faced arrow, always adorned with excellent garlands, shines with effort. Struck by the sons of Pandu with a multitude of arrows, it will lead you, Karna, to destruction.
बाणस्य भौमस्य च कर्ण हन्ता; किरीटिनं रक्षति वासुदेवः। यस्त्वादृशानां च गरीयसां च; हन्ता रिपूणां तुमुले प्रगाढे ॥५-६१-११॥
bāṇasya bhaumasya ca karṇa hantā; kirīṭinaṃ rakṣati vāsudevaḥ। yastvādṛśānāṃ ca garīyasāṃ ca; hantā ripūṇāṃ tumule pragāḍhe ॥5-61-11॥
[बाणस्य (bāṇasya) - of Bāṇa; भौमस्य (bhaumasya) - of Bhūma; च (ca) - and; कर्ण (karṇa) - Karṇa; हन्ता (hantā) - killer; किरीटिनं (kirīṭinam) - the crowned one; रक्षति (rakṣati) - protects; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वादृशानां (tvādṛśānāṃ) - of your kind; च (ca) - and; गरीयसां (garīyasāṃ) - of the great ones; च (ca) - and; हन्ता (hantā) - killer; रिपूणां (ripūṇāṃ) - of enemies; तुमुले (tumule) - in the tumultuous; प्रगाढे (pragāḍhe) - deep;]
(The killer of Bāṇa, Bhūma, and Karṇa; Vāsudeva protects the crowned one. He who is the killer of your kind and the great ones, in the tumultuous and deep battle.)
Vāsudeva, the protector of the crowned one, is the slayer of Bāṇa, Bhūma, and Karṇa. He is also the destroyer of your kind and the great ones in the fierce and deep battle.

असंशयं वृष्णिपतिर्यथोक्त; स्तथा च भूयश्च ततो महात्मा। अहं यदुक्तः परुषं तु किं चि; त्पितामहस्तस्य फलं शृणोतु ॥५-६१-१२॥
asaṁśayaṁ vṛṣṇipatiryathokta; stathā ca bhūyaśca tato mahātmā। ahaṁ yaduktaḥ paruṣaṁ tu kiṁ ci; tpitāmahastasya phalaṁ śṛṇotu ॥5-61-12॥
[असंशयं (asaṁśayam) - without doubt; वृष्णिपतिः (vṛṣṇipatiḥ) - the lord of the Vṛṣṇis; यथोक्तः (yathoktaḥ) - as said; स्तथा (stathā) - so; च (ca) - and; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; महात्मा (mahātmā) - the great soul; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; यदुक्तः (yaduktaḥ) - what was said; परुषं (paruṣam) - harsh; तु (tu) - but; किंचित् (kiṁcit) - something; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandfather; तस्य (tasya) - of that; फलं (phalam) - fruit; शृणोतु (śṛṇotu) - let him hear;]
(Without doubt, the lord of the Vṛṣṇis, as said, so and again, then the great soul. I, what was said, harsh but something; the grandfather of that fruit, let him hear.)
Without a doubt, the lord of the Vṛṣṇis, as mentioned, and again, then the great soul. I, whatever harsh words were said, let the grandfather hear the result of that.
न्यस्यामि शस्त्राणि न जातु सङ्ख्ये; पितामहो द्रक्ष्यति मां सभायाम्। त्वयि प्रशान्ते तु मम प्रभावं; द्रक्ष्यन्ति सर्वे भुवि भूमिपालाः ॥५-६१-१३॥
nyasyāmi śastrāṇi na jātu saṅkhye; pitāmaho drakṣyati māṃ sabhāyām। tvayi praśānte tu mama prabhāvaṃ; drakṣyanti sarve bhuvi bhūmipālāḥ ॥5-61-13॥
[न्यस्यामि (nyasyāmi) - I will lay down; शस्त्राणि (śastrāṇi) - weapons; न (na) - not; जातु (jātu) - ever; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; पितामहो (pitāmaho) - grandfather; द्रक्ष्यति (drakṣyati) - will see; मां (māṃ) - me; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; त्वयि (tvayi) - when you; प्रशान्ते (praśānte) - are pacified; तु (tu) - but; मम (mama) - my; प्रभावं (prabhāvaṃ) - power; द्रक्ष्यन्ति (drakṣyanti) - will see; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; भूमिपालाः (bhūmipālāḥ) - kings;]
(I will lay down weapons not ever in battle; grandfather will see me in the assembly. When you are pacified, but my power; all kings on earth will see.)
I will never lay down my weapons in battle; my grandfather will see me in the assembly. However, when you are pacified, all the kings on earth will witness my power.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

इत्येवमुक्त्वा स महाधनुष्मा; न्हित्वा सभां स्वं भवनं जगाम। भीष्मस्तु दुर्योधनमेव राज; न्मध्ये कुरूणां प्रहसन्नुवाच ॥५-६१-१४॥
ityevamuktvā sa mahādhanuṣmā; nhitvā sabhāṃ svaṃ bhavanaṃ jagāma। bhīṣmastu duryodhanameva rāj; namadhye kurūṇāṃ prahasannuvāca ॥5-61-14॥
[इत्येवम् (ityevam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; सः (saḥ) - he; महाधनुष्मा (mahādhanuṣmā) - great archer; निहित्वा (nīhitvā) - having placed; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; स्वम् (svam) - own; भवनम् (bhavanam) - palace; जगाम (jagāma) - went; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; तु (tu) - but; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; एव (eva) - only; राजन् (rājan) - king; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Thus having spoken, he, the great archer, having placed his own assembly, went to his palace. But Bhishma, smiling, said to King Duryodhana in the midst of the Kurus.)
After speaking thus, the great archer placed his assembly and went to his palace. Meanwhile, Bhishma, with a smile, addressed King Duryodhana amidst the Kurus.
सत्यप्रतिज्ञः किल सूतपुत्र; स्तथा स भारं विषहेत कस्मात्। व्यूहं प्रतिव्यूह्य शिरांसि भित्त्वा; लोकक्षयं पश्यत भीमसेनात् ॥५-६१-१५॥

(Truthful to his promise, indeed the son of a charioteer; thus he could bear the burden, why? Countering the formation, having pierced the heads; see the destruction of the world from Bhimasena.)
Indeed, the son of a charioteer, truthful to his promise, could bear the burden. Why? By countering the formation and piercing the heads, witness the destruction of the world caused by Bhimasena.
आवन्त्यकालिङ्गजयद्रथेषु; वेदिध्वजे तिष्ठति बाह्लिके च। अहं हनिष्यामि सदा परेषां; सहस्रशश्चायुतशश्च योधान् ॥५-६१-१६॥
āvantyakāliṅgajayadratheṣu; vedidhvaje tiṣṭhati bāhlike ca। ahaṃ haniṣyāmi sadā pareṣāṃ; sahasraśaścāyutaśaśca yodhān ॥5-61-16॥

यदैव रामे भगवत्यनिन्द्ये; ब्रह्म ब्रुवाणः कृतवांस्तदस्त्रम्। तदैव धर्मश्च तपश्च नष्टं; वैकर्तनस्याधमपूरुषस्य ॥५-६१-१७॥

(When indeed Brahma, speaking in the blameless divine Rāma, made that weapon, then indeed the righteousness and penance of the lowly man Vaikartana were destroyed.)
When Brahma spoke and created the weapon in the divine and blameless Rāma, it led to the destruction of righteousness and penance of the lowly Vaikartana.
अथोक्तवाक्ये नृपतौ तु भीष्मे; निक्षिप्य शस्त्राणि गते च कर्णे। वैचित्रवीर्यस्य सुतोऽल्पबुद्धि; र्दुर्योधनः शान्तनवं बभाषे ॥५-६१-१८॥

(Then, having spoken to the king, but Bhishma, having placed the weapons, and gone to Karna, Duryodhana, the son of Vicitravirya, of little intelligence, spoke to Santanu's descendant.)
Then, after Bhishma had spoken to the king and laid down his weapons, and Karna had left, Duryodhana, the not-so-wise son of Vicitravirya, addressed Santanu's descendant.
