sadṛśānāṃ manuṣyeṣu sarveṣāṃ tulyajanmanām। katham ekāntatas teṣāṃ pārthānāṃ manyase jayam ॥5-62-1॥

(Of similar men, of all of equal birth, how do you think there is absolute victory for the sons of Pritha?)
Among men who are similar and of equal birth, how can you be certain of victory for the sons of Pritha?
सर्वे स्म समजातीयाः सर्वे मानुषयोनयः। पितामह विजानीषे पार्थेषु विजयं कथम् ॥५-६२-२॥
sarve sma samajātīyāḥ sarve mānuṣayonayaḥ। pitāmaha vijānīṣe pārtheṣu vijayaṃ katham ॥5-62-2॥

नाहं भवति न द्रोणे न कृपे न च बाह्लिके। अन्येषु च नरेन्द्रेषु पराक्रम्य समारभे ॥५-६२-३॥
nāhaṃ bhavati na droṇe na kṛpe na ca bāhlike। anyeṣu ca narendreṣu parākramya samārabhe ॥5-62-3॥

अहं वैकर्तनः कर्णो भ्राता दुःशासनश्च मे। पाण्डवान्समरे पञ्च हनिष्यामः शितैः शरैः ॥५-६२-४॥
ahaṁ vaikartanaḥ karṇo bhrātā duḥśāsanaśca me। pāṇḍavānsamare pañca haniṣyāmaḥ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ ॥5-62-4॥

(I, Karṇa, son of Vikartana, and my brother Duḥśāsana, will kill the five Pāṇḍavas in battle with sharp arrows.)

ततो राजन्महायज्ञैर्विविधैर्भूरिदक्षिणैः। ब्राह्मणांस्तर्पयिष्यामि गोभिरश्वैर्धनेन च ॥५-६२-५॥
tato rājanmahāyajñairvividhairbhūridakṣiṇaiḥ। brāhmaṇāṁstarpayiṣyāmi gobhiraśvairdhanena ca ॥5-62-5॥

(Then, O king, I will satisfy the Brahmins with great sacrifices, various abundant gifts, cows, horses, and wealth.)
Then, O king, I shall perform great sacrifices and offer various abundant gifts to satisfy the Brahmins with cows, horses, and wealth.

शकुनीनामिहार्थाय पाशं भूमावयोजयत्। कश्चिच्छाकुनिकस्तात पूर्वेषामिति शुश्रुम ॥५-६२-६॥
śakunīnām ihārthāya pāśaṃ bhūmāv ayojayat। kaścit śākunikas tāta pūrveṣām iti śuśruma ॥5-62-6॥
[शकुनीनाम् (śakunīnām) - of birds; इह (iha) - here; अर्थाय (arthāya) - for the purpose; पाशम् (pāśam) - trap; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; अयोजयत् (ayojayat) - set; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; शाकुनिकः (śākunikaḥ) - bird-catcher; तात (tāta) - dear; पूर्वेषाम् (pūrveṣām) - of the ancients; इति (iti) - thus; शुश्रुम (śuśruma) - we have heard;]
(Here, for the purpose of birds, a trap was set on the ground by some bird-catcher, dear. Thus, we have heard of the ancients.)
We have heard, dear, that some bird-catcher set a trap on the ground here for catching birds, as was done by the ancients.
तस्मिन्द्वौ शकुनौ बद्धौ युगपत्समपौरुषौ। तावुपादाय तं पाशं जग्मतुः खचरावुभौ ॥५-६२-७॥
tasmin dvau śakunau baddhau yugapatsamapauruṣau। tāvupādāya taṃ pāśaṃ jagmatuḥ khacarāvubhau ॥5-62-7॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; द्वौ (dvau) - two; शकुनौ (śakunau) - birds; बद्धौ (baddhau) - bound; युगपत् (yugapat) - simultaneously; समपौरुषौ (samapauruṣau) - equally strong; तौ (tau) - they; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; तम् (tam) - that; पाशम् (pāśam) - noose; जग्मतुः (jagmatuḥ) - went; खचरौ (khacarau) - sky-goers; उभौ (ubhau) - both;]
(In that place, two birds, equally strong, were bound simultaneously. Having taken that noose, both sky-goers went.)
In that place, two equally strong birds were caught at the same time. Both of them, taking the noose, flew away into the sky.
तौ विहायसमाक्रान्तौ दृष्ट्वा शाकुनिकस्तदा। अन्वधावदनिर्विण्णो येन येन स्म गच्छतः ॥५-६२-८॥
tau vihāyasamākrāntau dṛṣṭvā śākunikastadā। anvadhāvadanirviṇṇo yena yena sma gacchataḥ ॥5-62-8॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; विहायसम् (vihāyasam) - sky; आक्रान्तौ (ākrāntau) - having ascended; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; शाकुनिकः (śākunikaḥ) - bird-catcher; तदा (tadā) - then; अन्वधावत् (anvadhāvat) - chased; अनिर्विण्णः (anirviṇṇaḥ) - without despair; येन (yena) - by which; येन (yena) - by which; स्म (sma) - indeed; गच्छतः (gacchataḥ) - they were going;]
(Those two having ascended the sky, the bird-catcher then, without despair, chased by whichever way they were indeed going.)
The bird-catcher, seeing those two ascend into the sky, chased after them without losing hope, following whichever path they took.
तथा तमनुधावन्तं मृगयुं शकुनार्थिनम्। आश्रमस्थो मुनिः कश्चिद्ददर्शाथ कृताह्निकः ॥५-६२-९॥
tathā tamanudhāvantaṃ mṛgayuṃ śakunārthinām। āśramastho muniḥ kaściddadarśātha kṛtāhnikḥ ॥5-62-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तम् (tam) - him; अनुधावन्तम् (anudhāvantam) - pursuing; मृगयुम् (mṛgayum) - hunter; शकुनार्थिनम् (śakunārthinām) - bird-seeker; आश्रमस्थः (āśramasthaḥ) - hermitage-dwelling; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; अथ (atha) - then; कृताह्निकः (kṛtāhnikḥ) - having completed daily rituals;]
(Thus, a sage dwelling in the hermitage saw him, the hunter pursuing the bird-seeker, having completed his daily rituals.)
A sage residing in the hermitage noticed the hunter chasing the bird-seeker after completing his daily rituals.
तावन्तरिक्षगौ शीघ्रमनुयान्तं महीचरम्। श्लोकेनानेन कौरव्य पप्रच्छ स मुनिस्तदा ॥५-६२-१०॥
tāvantarikṣagau śīghramanuyāntaṃ mahīcaram। ślokenānena kauravya papraccha sa munistadā ॥5-62-10॥
[तावन्तरिक्षगौ (tāvantarikṣagau) - those two who move in the sky; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; अनुयान्तम् (anuyāntam) - following; महीचरम् (mahīcaram) - the one who moves on earth; श्लोकेन (ślokena) - with a verse; अनेन (anena) - this; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; स (sa) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Those two who move in the sky quickly followed the one who moves on earth. With this verse, O descendant of Kuru, he, the sage, then asked.)
The two celestial beings swiftly followed the earthly traveler. Then, with this verse, the sage inquired, 'O descendant of Kuru.'
विचित्रमिदमाश्चर्यं मृगहन्प्रतिभाति मे। प्लवमानौ हि खचरौ पदातिरनुधावसि ॥५-६२-११॥
vicitram idam āścaryaṃ mṛgahan pratibhāti me। plavamānau hi khacarau padātir anudhāvasi ॥5-62-11॥
[विचित्रम् (vicitram) - wonderful; इदम् (idam) - this; आश्चर्यम् (āścaryam) - astonishing; मृगहन् (mṛgahan) - O hunter; प्रतिभाति (pratibhāti) - appears; मे (me) - to me; प्लवमानौ (plavamānau) - flying; हि (hi) - indeed; खचरौ (khacarau) - sky-goers; पदातिः (padātiḥ) - on foot; अनुधावसि (anudhāvasi) - you chase;]
(Wonderful this astonishing, O hunter, appears to me. Flying indeed sky-goers on foot you chase.)
"This scene is astonishing and wonderful, O hunter. You are chasing the sky-flying beings on foot."
शाकुनिक उवाच॥

[शाकुनिक (śākunika) - the bird-catcher; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(The bird-catcher said:)
The bird-catcher spoke:
पाशमेकमुभावेतौ सहितौ हरतो मम। यत्र वै विवदिष्येते तत्र मे वशमेष्यतः ॥५-६२-१२॥
pāśamekamubhāvetau sahitau harato mama। yatra vai vivadiṣyete tatra me vaśameṣyataḥ ॥5-62-12॥
[पाशम् (pāśam) - noose; एकम् (ekam) - one; उभौ (ubhāv) - both; एतौ (etau) - these; सहितौ (sahitau) - together; हरतः (harataḥ) - taking away; मम (mama) - my; यत्र (yatra) - where; वै (vai) - indeed; विवदिष्येते (vivadiṣyete) - will quarrel; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - my; वशम् (vaśam) - control; एष्यतः (eṣyataḥ) - will come;]
(Both these nooses of mine, when they quarrel, will come under my control.)

तौ विवादमनुप्राप्तौ शकुनौ मृत्युसन्धितौ। विगृह्य च सुदुर्बुद्धी पृथिव्यां संनिपेततुः ॥५-६२-१३॥
tau vivādamanuprāptau śakunau mṛtyusandhitau। vigṛhya ca sudurbuddhī pṛthivyāṃ saṃnipetatuḥ ॥5-62-13॥
[तौ (tau) - they both; विवादम् (vivādam) - dispute; अनुप्राप्तौ (anuprāptau) - reached; शकुनौ (śakunau) - omens; मृत्यु (mṛtyu) - death; सन्धितौ (sandhitau) - connected; विगृह्य (vigṛhya) - having fought; च (ca) - and; सुदुर्बुद्धी (sudurbuddhī) - very evil-minded; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on the earth; संनिपेततुः (saṃnipetatuḥ) - fell down;]
(They both reached a dispute, connected with death omens, having fought and being very evil-minded, fell down on the earth.)
The two, having engaged in a dispute and being very evil-minded, fell to the ground, influenced by omens of death.
तौ युध्यमानौ संरब्धौ मृत्युपाशवशानुगौ। उपसृत्यापरिज्ञातो जग्राह मृगयुस्तदा ॥५-६२-१४॥
tau yudhyamānau saṁrabdhau mṛtyupāśavaśānugau। upasṛtyāparijñāto jagrāha mṛgayustadā ॥5-62-14॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; युध्यमानौ (yudhyamānau) - fighting; संरब्धौ (saṁrabdhau) - excited; मृत्युपाशवशानुगौ (mṛtyupāśavaśānugau) - under the influence of the noose of death; उपसृत्य (upasṛtya) - approaching; अपरिज्ञातः (aparijñātaḥ) - unrecognized; जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; मृगयुः (mṛgayuḥ) - the hunter; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Those two, fighting and excited, under the influence of the noose of death, approached unrecognized, then the hunter seized.)
The two warriors, caught in the throes of battle and driven by the inevitability of death, approached without being recognized, and were then captured by the hunter.
एवं ये ज्ञातयोऽर्थेषु मिथो गच्छन्ति विग्रहम्। तेऽमित्रवशमायान्ति शकुनाविव विग्रहात् ॥५-६२-१५॥
evaṃ ye jñātayo'rtheṣu mitho gacchanti vigraham। te'mitravaśamāyānti śakunāviva vigrahāt ॥5-62-15॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; ये (ye) - who; ज्ञातयः (jñātayaḥ) - relatives; अर्थेषु (artheṣu) - in matters; मिथः (mithaḥ) - mutually; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; विग्रहम् (vigraham) - conflict; ते (te) - they; अमित्रवशम् (amitravaśam) - under the control of enemies; आयान्ति (āyānti) - come; शकुनौ (śakunau) - birds; इव (iva) - like; विग्रहात् (vigrahāt) - from conflict;]
(Thus, those relatives who engage in conflict over matters mutually, they come under the control of enemies, like birds from conflict.)
Relatives who engage in mutual conflicts over matters end up falling under the control of their enemies, just like birds become vulnerable due to their conflicts.
सम्भोजनं सङ्कथनं सम्प्रश्नोऽथ समागमः। एतानि ज्ञातिकार्याणि न विरोधः कदाचन ॥५-६२-१६॥
sambhojanaṁ saṅkathanaṁ sampraśno'tha samāgamaḥ। etāni jñātikāryāṇi na virodhaḥ kadācana ॥5-62-16॥
[सम्भोजनं (sambhojanaṁ) - sharing a meal; सङ्कथनं (saṅkathanaṁ) - conversation; सम्प्रश्नः (sampraśnaḥ) - inquiry; अथ (atha) - and; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - meeting; एतानि (etāni) - these; ज्ञातिकार्याणि (jñātikāryāṇi) - duties of relatives; न (na) - not; विरोधः (virodhaḥ) - opposition; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever;]
(Sharing a meal, conversation, inquiry, and meeting — these are the duties of relatives; there is never any opposition.)
Sharing meals, engaging in conversations, making inquiries, and meeting are the duties of relatives; there is never any opposition to these activities.
यस्मिन्काले सुमनसः सर्वे वृद्धानुपासते। सिंहगुप्तमिवारण्यमप्रधृष्या भवन्ति ते ॥५-६२-१७॥
yasmin kāle sumanasaḥ sarve vṛddhān upāsate। siṃhaguptam ivāraṇyam apradhṛṣyā bhavanti te ॥5-62-17॥
[यस्मिन्काले (yasmin kāle) - at which time; सुमनसः (sumanasaḥ) - good-minded ones; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वृद्धानुपासते (vṛddhān upāsate) - serve the elders; सिंहगुप्तमिव (siṃhaguptam iva) - like a lion-guarded; अरण्यम् (āraṇyam) - forest; अप्रधृष्याः (apradhṛṣyāḥ) - unassailable; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; ते (te) - they;]
(At which time all the good-minded ones serve the elders, they become unassailable like a lion-guarded forest.)
When all the virtuous people serve the elders, they become as unassailable as a forest guarded by lions.
येऽर्थं सन्ततमासाद्य दीना इव समासते। श्रियं ते सम्प्रयच्छन्ति द्विषद्भ्यो भरतर्षभ ॥५-६२-१८॥
ye'rthaṃ santatam āsādya dīnā iva samāsate। śriyaṃ te samprayacchanti dviṣadbhyo bharatarṣabha ॥5-62-18॥
[ये (ye) - those who; अर्थम् (artham) - wealth; सन्ततम् (santatam) - constantly; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having obtained; दीना (dīnā) - miserable; इव (iva) - like; समासते (samāsate) - sit; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; ते (te) - they; सम्प्रयच्छन्ति (samprayacchanti) - bestow; द्विषद्भ्यः (dviṣadbhyaḥ) - to enemies; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Those who, having constantly obtained wealth, sit like miserable ones, they bestow prosperity to enemies, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, those who constantly acquire wealth but sit like miserable ones end up bestowing their prosperity to their enemies.
धूमायन्ते व्यपेतानि ज्वलन्ति सहितानि च। धृतराष्ट्रोल्मुकानीव ज्ञातयो भरतर्षभ ॥५-६२-१९॥
dhūmāyante vyapetāni jvalanti sahitāni ca। dhṛtarāṣṭrolmukānīva jñātayo bharatarṣabha ॥5-62-19॥
[धूमायन्ते (dhūmāyante) - are smoking; व्यपेतानि (vyapetāni) - dispersed; ज्वलन्ति (jvalanti) - are blazing; सहितानि (sahitāni) - together; च (ca) - and; धृतराष्ट्र (dhṛtarāṣṭra) - Dhritarashtra's; उल्मुकानि (ulmukāni) - torches; इव (iva) - like; ज्ञातयः (jñātayaḥ) - relatives; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Are smoking dispersed, are blazing together and, like Dhritarashtra's torches, relatives, O best of the Bharatas.)
The dispersed smoke and blazing torches resemble the relatives of Dhritarashtra, O best of the Bharatas.
इदमन्यत्प्रवक्ष्यामि यथा दृष्टं गिरौ मया। श्रुत्वा तदपि कौरव्य यथा श्रेयस्तथा कुरु ॥५-६२-२०॥
idam anyat pravakṣyāmi yathā dṛṣṭaṃ girau mayā। śrutvā tad api kauravya yathā śreyas tathā kuru ॥5-62-20॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I will tell; यथा (yathā) - as; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; गिरौ (girau) - on the mountain; मया (mayā) - by me; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तत् (tad) - that; अपि (api) - also; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; यथा (yathā) - as; श्रेयः (śreyas) - better; तथा (tathā) - so; कुरु (kuru) - do;]
(This other thing I will tell, as seen on the mountain by me. Having heard that also, O descendant of Kuru, as better, so do.)
I will now tell you another thing as I saw it on the mountain. After hearing it, O Kauravya, act in a way that is better.
वयं किरातैः सहिता गच्छामो गिरिमुत्तरम्। ब्राह्मणैर्देवकल्पैश्च विद्याजम्भकवातिकैः ॥५-६२-२१॥
vayaṁ kirātaiḥ sahitā gacchāmo girimuttaram। brāhmaṇairdevakalpaiśca vidyājambhakavātikaiḥ ॥5-62-21॥
[वयं (vayaṁ) - we; किरातैः (kirātaiḥ) - with the Kiratas; सहिता (sahitā) - together; गच्छामः (gacchāmaḥ) - go; गिरिम् (girim) - mountain; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - northern; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - with Brahmins; देवकल्पैः (devakalpaiḥ) - god-like; च (ca) - and; विद्याजम्भकवातिकैः (vidyājambhakavātikaiḥ) - with the Vidyājambhaka Vātikas;]
(We, together with the Kiratas, go to the northern mountain, with Brahmins who are god-like and with the Vidyājambhaka Vātikas.)
We are going to the northern mountain along with the Kiratas, accompanied by Brahmins who are like gods and the Vidyājambhaka Vātikas.
कुञ्जभूतं गिरिं सर्वमभितो गन्धमादनम्। दीप्यमानौषधिगणं सिद्धगन्धर्वसेवितम् ॥५-६२-२२॥
kuñjabhūtaṃ giriṃ sarvamabhito gandhamādanam। dīpyamānauṣadhigaṇaṃ siddhagandharvasevitam ॥5-62-22॥
[कुञ्जभूतं (kuñjabhūtaṃ) - covered with thickets; गिरिं (giriṃ) - mountain; सर्वमभितः (sarvamabhitaḥ) - all around; गन्धमादनम् (gandhamādanam) - Gandhamadana; दीप्यमानौषधिगणं (dīpyamānauṣadhigaṇaṃ) - shining with medicinal plants; सिद्धगन्धर्वसेवितम् (siddhagandharvasevitam) - attended by Siddhas and Gandharvas;]
(The mountain Gandhamadana, covered with thickets all around, shining with medicinal plants, attended by Siddhas and Gandharvas.)
The Gandhamadana mountain, lush with dense thickets and glowing with medicinal herbs, is a place frequented by Siddhas and Gandharvas.
तत्र पश्यामहे सर्वे मधु पीतममाक्षिकम्। मरुप्रपाते विषमे निविष्टं कुम्भसंमितम् ॥५-६२-२३॥

(One without eyes obtains eyes; an old man becomes indeed a young man. Thus they say indeed, the Brahmins, those who accomplish the impossible.)
The Brahmins, known for achieving the impossible, say that one without eyes can gain sight and an old man can indeed become young.
ततः किरातास्तद्दृष्ट्वा प्रार्थयन्तो महीपते। विनेशुर्विषमे तस्मिन्ससर्पे गिरिगह्वरे ॥५-६२-२६॥
tataḥ kirātāstad dṛṣṭvā prārthayanto mahīpate। vineśurviṣame tasminsasarpe girigahvare ॥5-62-26॥

दुर्योधनो योद्धुमनाः समरे सव्यसाचिना। न च पश्यामि तेजोऽस्य विक्रमं वा तथाविधम् ॥५-६२-२८॥
duryodhano yoddhumanāḥ samare savyasācinā। na ca paśyāmi tejo'sya vikramaṃ vā tathāvidham ॥5-62-28॥
