धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥
Dhritarashtra spoke:
कथं त्वं माधवं वेत्थ सर्वलोकमहेश्वरम्। कथमेनं न वेदाहं तन्ममाचक्ष्व सञ्जय ॥५-६७-१॥
How is it that you know Madhava, the Lord of all worlds, while I do not? Please explain this to me, Sanjaya.
सञ्जय उवाच॥
Sanjaya said:
विद्या राजन्न ते विद्या मम विद्या न हीयते। विद्याहीनस्तमोध्वस्तो नाभिजानाति केशवम् ॥५-६७-२॥
O King, your knowledge and my knowledge do not diminish. A person devoid of knowledge, who is overcome by ignorance, does not recognize Keśava.
विद्यया तात जानामि त्रियुगं मधुसूदनम्। कर्तारमकृतं देवं भूतानां प्रभवाप्ययम् ॥५-६७-३॥
O dear, through knowledge, I understand Madhusudana as the timeless creator and uncreated god, the source and dissolution of all beings, across the three ages.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥
Dhritarashtra spoke:
गावल्गणेऽत्र का भक्तिर्या ते नित्या जनार्दने। यया त्वमभिजानासि त्रियुगं मधुसूदनम् ॥५-६७-४॥
In the assembly of cowherds here, what is your eternal devotion to Janardana, by which you recognize Madhusudana across the three ages?
सञ्जय उवाच॥
Sanjaya said:
मायां न सेवे भद्रं ते न वृथाधर्ममाचरे। शुद्धभावं गतो भक्त्या शास्त्राद्वेद्मि जनार्दनम् ॥५-६७-५॥
I do not engage in illusion or perform meaningless duties. With a pure heart and devotion, I understand Janardana through the scriptures.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥
Dhritarashtra spoke:
दुर्योधन हृषीकेशं प्रपद्यस्व जनार्दनम्। आप्तो नः सञ्जयस्तात शरणं गच्छ केशवम् ॥५-६७-६॥
Duryodhana, surrender to Lord Krishna, the controller of senses. Our trusted Sañjaya, dear one, seek refuge in Lord Krishna.
दुर्योधन उवाच॥
Duryodhana said:
भगवान्देवकीपुत्रो लोकं चेन्निहनिष्यति। प्रवदन्नर्जुने सख्यं नाहं गच्छेऽद्य केशवम् ॥५-६७-७॥
The Lord, son of Devaki, if he decides to destroy the world, speaking to Arjuna, I will not go to Keshava today.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥
Dhritarashtra spoke:
अवाग्गान्धारि पुत्रास्ते गच्छत्येष सुदुर्मतिः। ईर्ष्युर्दुरात्मा मानी च श्रेयसां वचनातिगः ॥५-६७-८॥
O Gandhari, your sons are speechless as this wicked-minded, jealous, evil-souled, and proud person disregards the advice of the wise.
गान्धार्युवाच॥
Gandhari spoke:
ऐश्वर्यकाम दुष्टात्मन्वृद्धानां शासनातिग। ऐश्वर्यजीविते हित्वा पितरं मां च बालिश ॥५-६७-९॥
The foolish one, desirous of wealth and living for it, wicked in soul, transgresses the commands of the elders, having abandoned both his father and me.
वर्धयन्दुर्हृदां प्रीतिं मां च शोकेन वर्धयन्। निहतो भीमसेनेन स्मर्तासि वचनं पितुः ॥५-६७-१०॥
While increasing the affection of the wicked and my grief, you were killed by Bhimasena. You will remember your father's words.
व्यास उवाच॥
Vyasa said:
दयितोऽसि राजन्कृष्णस्य धृतराष्ट्र निबोध मे। यस्य ते सञ्जयो दूतो यस्त्वां श्रेयसि योक्ष्यते ॥५-६७-११॥
O King Dhritarashtra, you are dear to Krishna. Listen to me, as Sanjaya, your messenger, will guide you towards your welfare.
जानात्येष हृषीकेशं पुराणं यच्च वै नवम्। शुश्रूषमाणमेकाग्रं मोक्ष्यते महतो भयात् ॥५-६७-१२॥
This person, who knows Hṛṣīkeśa, the ancient and the new, and is attentive and focused, will be liberated from great fear.
वैचित्रवीर्य पुरुषाः क्रोधहर्षतमोवृताः। सिता बहुविधैः पाशैर्ये न तुष्टाः स्वकैर्धनैः ॥५-६७-१३॥
Men of diverse strengths, shrouded in emotions like anger and joy, and enveloped in darkness, are bound by various ties and are not content with their own wealth.
यमस्य वशमायान्ति काममूढाः पुनः पुनः। अन्धनेत्रा यथैवान्धा नीयमानाः स्वकर्मभिः ॥५-६७-१४॥
Those who are blinded by desires repeatedly fall under the sway of Yama, just as the blind are led by their own deeds.
एष एकायनः पन्था येन यान्ति मनीषिणः। तं दृष्ट्वा मृत्युमत्येति महांस्तत्र न सज्जते ॥५-६७-१५॥
This is the singular path that the wise follow; upon seeing it, one transcends death and the great soul remains unattached there.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥
Dhritarashtra spoke:
अङ्ग सञ्जय मे शंस पन्थानमकुतोभयम्। येन गत्वा हृषीकेशं प्राप्नुयां शान्तिमुत्तमाम् ॥५-६७-१६॥
O dear Sanjaya, please tell me the path that is free from fear, by which I can reach Hrishikesha and attain the highest peace.
सञ्जय उवाच॥
Sanjaya said:
नाकृतात्मा कृतात्मानं जातु विद्याज्जनार्दनम्। आत्मनस्तु क्रियोपायो नान्यत्रेन्द्रियनिग्रहात् ॥५-६७-१७॥
O Janardana, one who has not mastered oneself should never understand one who has. The means of self-discipline is indeed through the control of the senses.
इन्द्रियाणामुदीर्णानां कामत्यागोऽप्रमादतः। अप्रमादोऽविहिंसा च ज्ञानयोनिरसंशयम् ॥५-६७-१८॥
The abandonment of desires arising from the agitated senses comes from vigilance. Vigilance and non-violence are undoubtedly the source of knowledge.
इन्द्रियाणां यमे यत्तो भव राजन्नतन्द्रितः। बुद्धिश्च मा ते च्यवतु नियच्छैतां यतस्ततः ॥५-६७-१९॥
O king, be vigilant and engaged in controlling your senses. Do not let your intellect be disturbed; control it from its source.
एतज्ज्ञानं विदुर्विप्रा ध्रुवमिन्द्रियधारणम्। एतज्ज्ञानं च पन्थाश्च येन यान्ति मनीषिणः ॥५-६७-२०॥
The wise ones understand this knowledge as the definite control of the senses. It is this knowledge and the path that the wise ones follow.
अप्राप्यः केशवो राजन्निन्द्रियैरजितैर्नृभिः। आगमाधिगतो योगाद्वशी तत्त्वे प्रसीदति ॥५-६७-२१॥
O King, Keshava cannot be attained by men whose senses are uncontrolled. He is understood through the scriptures and yoga, and becomes pleased with those who are self-controlled and truthful.
