kathaṁ tvaṁ mādhavaṁ vettha sarvalokamaheśvaram। kathamenaṁ na vedāhaṁ tanmamācakṣva sañjaya ॥5-67-1॥

(How do you know Madhava, the Lord of all worlds? How do I not know this? Tell me that, Sanjaya.)
How is it that you know Madhava, the Lord of all worlds, while I do not? Please explain this to me, Sanjaya.

विद्या राजन्न ते विद्या मम विद्या न हीयते। विद्याहीनस्तमोध्वस्तो नाभिजानाति केशवम् ॥५-६७-२॥
vidyā rājanna te vidyā mama vidyā na hīyate। vidyāhīnastamodhvasto nābhijānāti keśavam ॥5-67-2॥
[विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ते (te) - your; विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; मम (mama) - my; विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; न (na) - not; हीयते (hīyate) - diminishes; विद्याहीनः (vidyāhīnaḥ) - one devoid of knowledge; तमोध्वस्तः (tamodhvastaḥ) - overcome by darkness; न (na) - not; अभिजानाति (abhijānāti) - recognizes; केशवम् (keśavam) - Keśava;]
(Knowledge, O king, your knowledge, my knowledge does not diminish. One devoid of knowledge, overcome by darkness, does not recognize Keśava.)
O King, your knowledge and my knowledge do not diminish. A person devoid of knowledge, who is overcome by ignorance, does not recognize Keśava.
विद्यया तात जानामि त्रियुगं मधुसूदनम्। कर्तारमकृतं देवं भूतानां प्रभवाप्ययम् ॥५-६७-३॥
vidyayā tāta jānāmi triyugaṃ madhusūdanam। kartāramakṛtaṃ devaṃ bhūtānāṃ prabhavāpyayam ॥5-67-3॥

O dear, through knowledge, I understand Madhusudana as the timeless creator and uncreated god, the source and dissolution of all beings, across the three ages.

māyāṃ na seve bhadraṃ te na vṛthādharmamācare। śuddhabhāvaṃ gato bhaktyā śāstrādvedmi janārdanam ॥5-67-5॥
[मायां (māyāṃ) - illusion; न (na) - not; सेवे (seve) - serve; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspicious; ते (te) - your; न (na) - not; वृथाधर्मम् (vṛthādharmam) - useless duty; आचरे (ācare) - perform; शुद्धभावं (śuddhabhāvaṃ) - pure heart; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; शास्त्रात् (śāstrāt) - from scriptures; वेद्मि (vedmi) - know; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janardana;]
(I do not serve illusion, nor do I perform useless duty. Having gone to a pure heart with devotion, I know Janardana from the scriptures.)

(Speechless, O Gandhari, your sons go, this wicked-minded, jealous, evil-souled, proud, and disregarder of the advice of the good.)
O Gandhari, your sons are speechless as this wicked-minded, jealous, evil-souled, and proud person disregards the advice of the wise.

ऐश्वर्यकाम दुष्टात्मन्वृद्धानां शासनातिग। ऐश्वर्यजीविते हित्वा पितरं मां च बालिश ॥५-६७-९॥
aiśvaryakāma duṣṭātmanvṛddhānāṃ śāsanātiga। aiśvaryajīvite hitvā pitaraṃ māṃ ca bāliśa ॥5-67-9॥
[ऐश्वर्यकाम (aiśvaryakāma) - desirous of wealth; दुष्टात्मन् (duṣṭātman) - wicked soul; वृद्धानां (vṛddhānāṃ) - of the elders; शासनातिग (śāsanātiga) - transgressor of commands; ऐश्वर्यजीविते (aiśvaryajīvite) - living for wealth; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; मां (māṃ) - me; च (ca) - and; बालिश (bāliśa) - foolish;]
(Desirous of wealth, wicked soul, transgressor of the elders' commands, living for wealth, having abandoned father and me, foolish.)
The foolish one, desirous of wealth and living for it, wicked in soul, transgresses the commands of the elders, having abandoned both his father and me.
वर्धयन्दुर्हृदां प्रीतिं मां च शोकेन वर्धयन्। निहतो भीमसेनेन स्मर्तासि वचनं पितुः ॥५-६७-१०॥
vardhayandurhṛdāṃ prītiṃ māṃ ca śokena vardhayan। nihato bhīmasenena smartāsi vacanaṃ pituḥ ॥5-67-10॥
[वर्धयन् (vardhayan) - increasing; दुर्हृदाम् (durhṛdām) - of the wicked; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - affection; माम् (mām) - me; च (ca) - and; शोकेन (śokena) - with grief; वर्धयन् (vardhayan) - increasing; निहतः (nihataḥ) - killed; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhimasena; स्मर्तासि (smartāsi) - you will remember; वचनम् (vacanam) - the words; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father;]
(Increasing the affection of the wicked and increasing my grief, killed by Bhimasena, you will remember the words of the father.)

dayito'si rājan kṛṣṇasya dhṛtarāṣṭra nibodha me। yasya te sañjayo dūto yastvāṃ śreyasi yokṣyate ॥5-67-11॥

(You are beloved of Krishna, O King Dhritarashtra, listen to me. Sanjaya, whose messenger you are, will engage you in welfare.)
O King Dhritarashtra, you are dear to Krishna. Listen to me, as Sanjaya, your messenger, will guide you towards your welfare.
जानात्येष हृषीकेशं पुराणं यच्च वै नवम्। शुश्रूषमाणमेकाग्रं मोक्ष्यते महतो भयात् ॥५-६७-१२॥
jānātyeṣa hṛṣīkeśaṃ purāṇaṃ yacca vai navam। śuśrūṣamāṇamekāgraṃ mokṣyate mahato bhayāt ॥5-67-12॥
[जानाति (jānāti) - knows; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; हृषीकेशं (hṛṣīkeśaṃ) - Hṛṣīkeśa; पुराणं (purāṇam) - ancient; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; वै (vai) - indeed; नवम् (navam) - new; शुश्रूषमाणम् (śuśrūṣamāṇam) - attentive; एकाग्रम् (ekāgram) - focused; मोक्ष्यते (mokṣyate) - is liberated; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear;]
(This one knows Hṛṣīkeśa, the ancient and indeed the new, attentive and focused, is liberated from great fear.)
This person, who knows Hṛṣīkeśa, the ancient and the new, and is attentive and focused, will be liberated from great fear.
वैचित्रवीर्य पुरुषाः क्रोधहर्षतमोवृताः। सिता बहुविधैः पाशैर्ये न तुष्टाः स्वकैर्धनैः ॥५-६७-१३॥
vaicitravīrya puruṣāḥ krodhaharṣatamovṛtāḥ। sitā bahuvidhaiḥ pāśairye na tuṣṭāḥ svakairdhanaiḥ ॥5-67-13॥
[वैचित्रवीर्य (vaicitravīrya) - of various strengths; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; हर्ष (harṣa) - joy; तमोवृताः (tamovṛtāḥ) - enveloped in darkness; सिता (sitā) - bound; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - by various; पाशैः (pāśaiḥ) - bonds; ये (ye) - who; न (na) - not; तुष्टाः (tuṣṭāḥ) - satisfied; स्वकैः (svakaiḥ) - with their own; धनैः (dhanaiḥ) - wealth;]
(Men of various strengths, enveloped in anger, joy, and darkness, bound by various bonds, who are not satisfied with their own wealth.)
Men of diverse strengths, shrouded in emotions like anger and joy, and enveloped in darkness, are bound by various ties and are not content with their own wealth.
यमस्य वशमायान्ति काममूढाः पुनः पुनः। अन्धनेत्रा यथैवान्धा नीयमानाः स्वकर्मभिः ॥५-६७-१४॥
yamasya vaśam āyānti kāmamūḍhāḥ punaḥ punaḥ। andhanetrā yathaivāndhā nīyamānāḥ svakarmabhiḥ ॥5-67-14॥
[यमस्य (yamasya) - of Yama; वशम् (vaśam) - control; आयान्ति (āyānti) - come; काममूढाः (kāmamūḍhāḥ) - deluded by desires; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अन्धनेत्राः (andhanetrāḥ) - blind-eyed; यथा (yathā) - as; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्धाः (andhāḥ) - blind; नीयमानाः (nīyamānāḥ) - being led; स्वकर्मभिः (svakarmabhiḥ) - by their own actions;]
(Those deluded by desires come under the control of Yama again and again, like the blind being led by their own actions.)
Those who are blinded by desires repeatedly fall under the sway of Yama, just as the blind are led by their own deeds.
एष एकायनः पन्था येन यान्ति मनीषिणः। तं दृष्ट्वा मृत्युमत्येति महांस्तत्र न सज्जते ॥५-६७-१५॥
eṣa ekāyanaḥ panthā yena yānti manīṣiṇaḥ। taṃ dṛṣṭvā mṛtyumatyeti mahāṃstatra na sajjate ॥5-67-15॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; एकायनः (ekāyanaḥ) - one path; पन्था (panthā) - way; येन (yena) - by which; यान्ति (yānti) - go; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - wise ones; तं (taṃ) - that; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मृत्युम् (mṛtyum) - death; अत्येति (atyeti) - overcomes; महान् (mahān) - great; तत्र (tatra) - there; न (na) - not; सज्जते (sajjate) - attached;]
(This is the one path by which the wise ones go; having seen that, one overcomes death, the great one is not attached there.)
This is the singular path that the wise follow; upon seeing it, one transcends death and the great soul remains unattached there.

अङ्ग सञ्जय मे शंस पन्थानमकुतोभयम्। येन गत्वा हृषीकेशं प्राप्नुयां शान्तिमुत्तमाम् ॥५-६७-१६॥
aṅga sañjaya me śaṁsa panthānamakutobhayam। yena gatvā hṛṣīkeśaṁ prāpnuyāṁ śāntimuttamām ॥5-67-16॥
[अङ्ग (aṅga) - O dear; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sanjaya; मे (me) - my; शंस (śaṁsa) - tell; पन्थानम् (panthānam) - path; अकुतोभयम् (akutobhayam) - fearless; येन (yena) - by which; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; हृषीकेशम् (hṛṣīkeśam) - to Hrishikesha; प्राप्नुयाम् (prāpnuyām) - I may attain; शान्तिम् (śāntim) - peace; उत्तमाम् (uttamām) - supreme;]
(O dear Sanjaya, tell me the fearless path by which, having gone, I may attain supreme peace with Hrishikesha.)
O dear Sanjaya, please tell me the path that is free from fear, by which I can reach Hrishikesha and attain the highest peace.

नाकृतात्मा कृतात्मानं जातु विद्याज्जनार्दनम्। आत्मनस्तु क्रियोपायो नान्यत्रेन्द्रियनिग्रहात् ॥५-६७-१७॥
nākṛtātmā kṛtātmānaṃ jātu vidyājjanārdanam। ātmanastu kriyopāyo nānyatrendriyanigrahāt ॥5-67-17॥
[नाकृतात्मा (nākṛtātmā) - one who has not controlled the self; कृतात्मानं (kṛtātmānaṃ) - one who has controlled the self; जातु (jātu) - ever; विद्यात् (vidyāt) - should know; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - O Janardana; आत्मनस्तु (ātmanastu) - for the self indeed; क्रियोपायः (kriyopāyaḥ) - means of action; न (na) - not; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; इन्द्रियनिग्रहात् (indriyanigrahāt) - from control of the senses;]
(One who has not controlled the self should never know one who has controlled the self, O Janardana. For the self indeed, the means of action is not elsewhere than from control of the senses.)
O Janardana, one who has not mastered oneself should never understand one who has. The means of self-discipline is indeed through the control of the senses.
इन्द्रियाणामुदीर्णानां कामत्यागोऽप्रमादतः। अप्रमादोऽविहिंसा च ज्ञानयोनिरसंशयम् ॥५-६७-१८॥
indriyāṇām udīrṇānāṃ kāmatyāgo'pramādataḥ। apramādo'vihiṃsā ca jñānayonirasaṃśayam ॥5-67-18॥
[इन्द्रियाणाम् (indriyāṇām) - of the senses; उदीर्णानाम् (udīrṇānāṃ) - agitated; कामत्यागः (kāmatyāgaḥ) - abandonment of desires; अप्रमादतः (apramādataḥ) - from vigilance; अप्रमादः (apramādaḥ) - vigilance; अविहिंसा (avihiṃsā) - non-violence; च (ca) - and; ज्ञानयोनिः (jñānayoniḥ) - source of knowledge; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]

एतज्ज्ञानं विदुर्विप्रा ध्रुवमिन्द्रियधारणम्। एतज्ज्ञानं च पन्थाश्च येन यान्ति मनीषिणः ॥५-६७-२०॥
etaj-jñānaṃ vidur-viprā dhruvam-indriya-dhāraṇam। etaj-jñānaṃ ca panthāś-ca yena yānti manīṣiṇaḥ ॥5-67-20॥

(This knowledge is known by the wise ones as certainly the control of the senses. This knowledge and the path by which the wise ones go.)
The wise ones understand this knowledge as the definite control of the senses. It is this knowledge and the path that the wise ones follow.
अप्राप्यः केशवो राजन्निन्द्रियैरजितैर्नृभिः। आगमाधिगतो योगाद्वशी तत्त्वे प्रसीदति ॥५-६७-२१॥
aprāpyaḥ keśavo rājannindriyairajitairnṛbhiḥ। āgamādhigato yogādvaśī tattve prasīdati ॥5-67-21॥
