Pancharatra: When Duryodhana attempts to capture Krishna, Krishna manifests his universal form, and departs from the assembly.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

विदुरेणैवमुक्ते तु केशवः शत्रुपूगहा । दुर्योधनं धार्तराष्ट्रमभ्यभाषत वीर्यवान् ॥५-१२९-१॥
vidureṇaivamukte tu keśavaḥ śatrupūgahā । duryodhanaṃ dhārtarāṣṭramabhyabhāṣata vīryavān ॥5-129-1॥

(By Vidura thus having been spoken, but Keshava, destroyer of enemy hosts, addressed Duryodhana, son of Dhritarashtra, the mighty.)
After Vidura spoke thus, the mighty Keshava, destroyer of enemy hosts, addressed Duryodhana, the son of Dhritarashtra.
एकोऽहमिति यन्मोहान्मन्यसे मां सुयोधन । परिभूय च दुर्बुद्धे ग्रहीतुं मां चिकीर्षसि ॥५-१२९-२॥
eko'hamiti yanmohānmanyase māṃ suyodhana । paribhūya ca durbuddhe grahītuṃ māṃ cikīrṣasi ॥5-129-2॥

(One I thus which from delusion you think me, Suyodhana. Disregarding and O wicked-minded, to seize me you intend.)
O Suyodhana, in your delusion you think I am alone. Disregarding me, O wicked-minded one, you intend to seize me.
इहैव पाण्डवाः सर्वे तथैवान्धकवृष्णयः । इहादित्याश्च रुद्राश्च वसवश्च महर्षिभिः ॥५-१२९-३॥
ihaiva pāṇḍavāḥ sarve tathaivāndhakavṛṣṇayaḥ । ihādityāśca rudrāśca vasavaśca maharṣibhiḥ ॥5-129-3॥
[इहैव (ihaiva) - here itself; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pāṇḍavas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तथैव (tathaiva) - similarly; अन्धकवृष्णयः (andhakavṛṣṇayaḥ) - Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis; इह (iha) - here; आदित्याः (ādityāḥ) - Ādityas; च (ca) - and; रुद्राः (rudrāḥ) - Rudras; वसवः (vasavaḥ) - Vasus; महर्षिभिः (maharṣibhiḥ) - with great sages;]
(Here itself are all the Pāṇḍavas and similarly the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis. Here are the Ādityas, Rudras, Vasus, with great sages.)
In this very place are gathered all the Pāṇḍavas, as well as the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis. Present here are also the Ādityas, Rudras, and Vasus, accompanied by the great sages.
एवमुक्त्वा जहासोच्चैः केशवः परवीरहा । तस्य संस्मयतः शौरेर्विद्युद्रूपा महात्मनः ॥ अङ्गुष्ठमात्रास्त्रिदशा मुमुचुः पावकार्चिषः ॥५-१२९-४॥
evamuktvā jahāsoccaiḥ keśavaḥ paravīrahā । tasya saṃsmayataḥ śaurervidyudrūpā mahātmanaḥ ॥ aṅguṣṭhamātrāstridaśā mumucuḥ pāvakārciṣaḥ ॥5-129-4॥

(Thus having spoken, Keshava, the destroyer of enemy heroes, laughed loudly. As he smiled, the lightning-formed great soul Shouri, thumb-sized gods released fire flames.)
After speaking thus, Keshava, the destroyer of enemy heroes, laughed loudly. As he smiled, the great soul Shouri, whose form was like lightning, saw the thumb-sized gods releasing flames of fire.
तस्य ब्रह्मा ललाटस्थो रुद्रो वक्षसि चाभवत् । लोकपाला भुजेष्वासन्नग्निरास्यादजायत ॥५-१२९-५॥
tasya brahmā lalāṭastho rudro vakṣasi cābhavat । lokapālā bhujeṣvāsannagnirāsyādajāyata ॥5-129-5॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahma; ललाटस्थः (lalāṭasthaḥ) - situated on the forehead; रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; वक्षसि (vakṣasi) - on the chest; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; लोकपाला (lokapālā) - guardians of the world; भुजेषु (bhujeṣu) - on the arms; आसन् (āsan) - were; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni; आस्यात् (āsyāt) - from the mouth; अजायत (ajāyata) - was born;]
(His Brahma was situated on the forehead, Rudra became on the chest, the guardians of the world were on the arms, Agni was born from the mouth.)
Brahma was on his forehead, Rudra on his chest, the guardians of the world on his arms, and Agni emerged from his mouth.
आदित्याश्चैव साध्याश्च वसवोऽथाश्विनावपि । मरुतश्च सहेन्द्रेण विश्वेदेवास्तथैव च ॥बभूवुश्चैव रूपाणि यक्षगन्धर्वरक्षसाम् ॥५-१२९-६॥

(Adityas and indeed Sadhyas and Vasus then Ashvins also Maruts and with Indra Vishwedevas similarly and became and indeed forms Yakshas Gandharvas Rakshasas.)
The Adityas, Sadhyas, Vasus, Ashvins, Maruts, along with Indra and the Vishwedevas, similarly assumed the forms of Yakshas, Gandharvas, and Rakshasas.
प्रादुरास्तां तथा दोर्भ्यां सङ्कर्षणधनञ्जयौ । दक्षिणेऽथार्जुनो धन्वी हली रामश्च सव्यतः ॥५-१२९-७॥
prādurāstāṃ tathā dorbhyāṃ saṅkarṣaṇadhanañjayau । dakṣiṇe'thārjuno dhanvī halī rāmaśca savyataḥ ॥5-129-7॥
[प्रादुरास्तां (prādurāstāṃ) - appeared; तथा (tathā) - thus; दोर्भ्यां (dorbhyāṃ) - with arms; सङ्कर्षणधनञ्जयौ (saṅkarṣaṇadhanañjayau) - Saṅkarṣaṇa and Dhanañjaya; दक्षिणे (dakṣiṇe) - on the right; अथ (atha) - then; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; धन्वी (dhanvī) - the archer; हली (halī) - the ploughman; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; च (ca) - and; सव्यतः (savyataḥ) - on the left;]
(Thus appeared with arms Saṅkarṣaṇa and Dhanañjaya; then Arjuna, the archer, on the right, and Rama, the ploughman, on the left.)
Thus, Saṅkarṣaṇa and Dhanañjaya appeared with their arms; Arjuna, the archer, stood on the right, and Rama, the ploughman, stood on the left.
भीमो युधिष्ठिरश्चैव माद्रीपुत्रौ च पृष्ठतः । अन्धका वृष्णयश्चैव प्रद्युम्नप्रमुखास्ततः ॥५-१२९-८॥
bhīmo yudhiṣṭhiraścaiva mādrīputrau ca pṛṣṭhataḥ । andhakā vṛṣṇayaścaiva pradyumnapramukhāstataḥ ॥5-129-8॥

अग्रे बभूवुः कृष्णस्य समुद्यतमहायुधाः । शङ्खचक्रगदाशक्तिशार्ङ्गलाङ्गलनन्दकाः ॥५-१२९-९॥
agre babhūvuḥ kṛṣṇasya samudyatamahāyudhāḥ । śaṅkhacakragadāśaktiśārṅgalāṅgalanandakāḥ ॥5-129-9॥

(In front were Krishna's raised great weapons: conch, discus, mace, spear, bow, plough, sword.)

अदृश्यन्तोद्यतान्येव सर्वप्रहरणानि च । नानाबाहुषु कृष्णस्य दीप्यमानानि सर्वशः ॥५-१२९-१०॥
adṛśyantodyatānyeva sarvapraharaṇāni ca । nānābāhuṣu kṛṣṇasya dīpyamānāni sarvaśaḥ ॥5-129-10॥
[अदृश्यन्त (adṛśyanta) - were seen; उद्यतानि (udyatāni) - raised; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वप्रहरणानि (sarvapraharaṇāni) - all weapons; च (ca) - and; नानाबाहुषु (nānābāhuṣu) - in various arms; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Krishna; दीप्यमानानि (dīpyamānāni) - shining; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - everywhere;]
(All the weapons were indeed seen raised, shining everywhere in the various arms of Krishna.)
All the weapons were seen raised and shining in the many arms of Krishna, illuminating everywhere.
नेत्राभ्यां नस्ततश्चैव श्रोत्राभ्यां च समन्ततः । प्रादुरासन्महारौद्राः सधूमाः पावकार्चिषः ॥ रोमकूपेषु च तथा सूर्यस्येव मरीचयः ॥५-१२९-११॥
netrābhyāṃ nastataścaiva śrotrābhyāṃ ca samantataḥ । prādurāsanmahāraudrāḥ sadhūmāḥ pāvakārciṣaḥ ॥ romakūpeṣu ca tathā sūryasyeva marīcayaḥ ॥5-129-11॥

(From our eyes and ears, all around, very terrible flames of fire with smoke appeared, like the rays of the sun in the pores of the skin.)
Then, from our eyes and ears, all around, appeared very terrible flames of fire with smoke, resembling the rays of the sun in the pores of the skin.
तं दृष्ट्वा घोरमात्मानं केशवस्य महात्मनः । न्यमीलयन्त नेत्राणि राजानस्त्रस्तचेतसः ॥५-१२९-१२॥
taṁ dṛṣṭvā ghoramātmānaṁ keśavasya mahātmanaḥ । nyamīlayanta netrāṇi rājānastrastacetasaḥ ॥5-129-12॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - form; केशवस्य (keśavasya) - of Keshava; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great soul; न्यमीलयन्त (nyamīlayanta) - closed; नेत्राणि (netrāṇi) - eyes; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - the kings; त्रस्तचेतसः (trastacetasaḥ) - with frightened minds;]
(Having seen the terrible form of Keshava, the great soul, the kings with frightened minds closed their eyes.)
Upon witnessing the terrifying form of the great Keshava, the kings, overwhelmed with fear, shut their eyes.
ऋते द्रोणं च भीष्मं च विदुरं च महामतिम् । सञ्जयं च महाभागमृषींश्चैव तपोधनान् ॥ प्रादात्तेषां स भगवान्दिव्यं चक्षुर्जनार्दनः ॥५-१२९-१३॥
ṛte droṇaṃ ca bhīṣmaṃ ca viduraṃ ca mahāmatim । sañjayaṃ ca mahābhāgamṛṣīṃścaiva tapodhanān ॥ prādātteṣāṃ sa bhagavāndivyaṃ cakṣurjanārdanaḥ ॥5-129-13॥

(Except for Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Vidura, the great-minded, Sañjaya, the fortunate, sages, and indeed ascetics, to them, he, the Lord, Janārdana, gave divine vision.)
Janārdana, the Lord, bestowed divine vision upon Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Vidura, the great-minded Sañjaya, the fortunate ones, the sages, and the ascetics, excepted from others.
तद्दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यं माधवस्य सभातले । देवदुन्दुभयो नेदुः पुष्पवर्षं पपात च ॥५-१२९-१४॥
taddṛṣṭvā mahadāścaryaṃ mādhavasya sabhātale । devadundubhayo neduḥ puṣpavarṣaṃ papāta ca ॥5-129-14॥
[तत् (tat) - that; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; महत् (mahat) - great; आश्चर्यं (āścaryaṃ) - wonder; माधवस्य (mādhavasya) - of Mādhava; सभातले (sabhātale) - in the assembly hall; देवदुन्दुभयः (devadundubhayaḥ) - divine drums; नेदुः (neduḥ) - resounded; पुष्पवर्षं (puṣpavarṣaṃ) - shower of flowers; पपात (papāta) - fell; च (ca) - and;]
(Having seen that great wonder in Mādhava's assembly hall, divine drums resounded and a shower of flowers fell.)
Upon witnessing the great wonder in Mādhava's assembly hall, the divine drums resounded, and there was a shower of flowers.
चचाल च मही कृत्स्ना सागरश्चापि चुक्षुभे । विस्मयं परमं जग्मुः पार्थिवा भरतर्षभ ॥५-१२९-१५॥
cacāla ca mahī kṛtsnā sāgaraścāpi cukṣubhe । vismayaṃ paramaṃ jagmuḥ pārthivā bharatarṣabha ॥5-129-15॥
[चचाल (cacāla) - shook; च (ca) - and; मही (mahī) - earth; कृत्स्ना (kṛtsnā) - entire; सागरः (sāgaraḥ) - ocean; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; चुक्षुभे (cukṣubhe) - was agitated; विस्मयं (vismayaṃ) - amazement; परमं (paramaṃ) - great; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - attained; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - kings; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(And the entire earth shook, and the ocean was also agitated. The kings attained great amazement, O best of the Bharatas.)
The whole earth trembled, and the ocean was stirred. The kings were greatly amazed, O best of the Bharatas.
ततः स पुरुषव्याघ्रः सञ्जहार वपुः स्वकम् । तां दिव्यामद्भुतां चित्रामृद्धिमत्तामरिंदमः ॥५-१२९-१६॥
tataḥ sa puruṣavyāghraḥ sañjahāra vapuḥ svakam । tāṃ divyāmadbhutāṃ citrāmṛddhimattāmariṃdamaḥ ॥5-129-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; पुरुषव्याघ्रः (puruṣavyāghraḥ) - tiger among men; सञ्जहार (sañjahāra) - withdrew; वपुः (vapuḥ) - form; स्वकम् (svakam) - his own; ताम् (tām) - that; दिव्याम् (divyām) - divine; अद्भुताम् (adbhutām) - wonderful; चित्राम् (citrām) - varied; ऋद्धिमत्ताम् (ṛddhimattām) - prosperous; अरिंदमः (ariṃdamaḥ) - subduer of enemies;]
(Then he, the tiger among men, withdrew his own form, that divine, wonderful, varied, prosperous form, O subduer of enemies.)
Then the hero, known as the tiger among men, retracted his own magnificent and divine form, which was varied and prosperous, O subduer of enemies.
ततः सात्यकिमादाय पाणौ हार्दिक्यमेव च । ऋषिभिस्तैरनुज्ञातो निर्ययौ मधुसूदनः ॥५-१२९-१७॥
tataḥ sātyakim ādāya pāṇau hārdikyam eva ca । ṛṣibhiḥ taiḥ anujñātaḥ niryayau madhusūdanaḥ ॥5-129-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सात्यकिम् (sātyakim) - Satyaki; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; पाणौ (pāṇau) - in hand; हार्दिक्यम् (hārdikyam) - Hārdikya; एव (eva) - also; च (ca) - and; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by the sages; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - permitted; निर्ययौ (niryayau) - departed; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusūdana;]
(Then, having taken Satyaki and Hārdikya in hand, and permitted by the sages, Madhusūdana departed.)
Then Madhusūdana, having taken Satyaki and Hārdikya by the hand and being permitted by the sages, departed.
ऋषयोऽन्तर्हिता जग्मुस्ततस्ते नारदादयः । तस्मिन्कोलाहले वृत्ते तदद्भुतमभूत्तदा ॥५-१२९-१८॥
ṛṣayo'ntarhitā jagmustataste nāradādayaḥ । tasmin kolāhale vṛtte tadadbhutam abhūttadā ॥5-129-18॥
[ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; अन्तर्हिताः (antarhitāḥ) - disappeared; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; नारदादयः (nāradādayaḥ) - Nārada and others; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; कोलाहले (kolāhale) - uproar; वृत्ते (vṛtte) - having occurred; तत् (tad) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; अभूत् (abhūt) - happened; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(The sages disappeared, then Nārada and others went. In that uproar, that wonderful thing happened then.)
The sages vanished, and then Nārada and others departed. Amidst the uproar, a wonderful event occurred at that time.
तं प्रस्थितमभिप्रेक्ष्य कौरवाः सह राजभिः । अनुजग्मुर्नरव्याघ्रं देवा इव शतक्रतुम् ॥५-१२९-१९॥
taṃ prasthitamabhiprekṣya kauravāḥ saha rājabhiḥ । anujagmur naravyāghraṃ devā iva śatakratum ॥5-129-19॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; प्रस्थितम् (prasthitam) - departed; अभिप्रेक्ष्य (abhiprekṣya) - having observed; कौरवाः (kauravāḥ) - Kauravas; सह (saha) - with; राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - kings; अनुजग्मुः (anujagmuḥ) - followed; नरव्याघ्रम् (naravyāghram) - tiger among men; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; इव (iva) - like; शतक्रतुम् (śatakratum) - Indra;]
(Having observed him departed, the Kauravas along with the kings followed the tiger among men, like the gods follow Indra.)
Seeing him depart, the Kauravas along with the kings followed the great warrior, just as the gods follow Indra.
अचिन्तयन्नमेयात्मा सर्वं तद्राजमण्डलम् । निश्चक्राम ततः शौरिः सधूम इव पावकः ॥५-१२९-२०॥
acintayannameyātmā sarvaṃ tadrājamaṇḍalam । niścakrāma tataḥ śauriḥ sadhūma iva pāvakaḥ ॥5-129-20॥

(Thinking, the immeasurable soul departed all that kingdom, then the hero like fire with smoke.)
The immeasurable soul contemplated and then departed from the entire kingdom, like a hero emerging from smoke and fire.
ततो रथेन शुभ्रेण महता किङ्किणीकिना । हेमजालविचित्रेण लघुना मेघनादिना ॥५-१२९-२१॥

सूपस्करेण शुभ्रेण वैयाघ्रेण वरूथिना । सैन्यसुग्रीवयुक्तेन प्रत्यदृश्यत दारुकः ॥५-१२९-२२॥

उपस्थितरथं शौरिं प्रयास्यन्तमरिंदमम् । धृतराष्ट्रो महाराजः पुनरेवाभ्यभाषत ॥५-१२९-२४॥

(With the chariot ready, Krishna, the subduer of enemies, was departing. Dhritarashtra, the great king, indeed spoke again.)

यावद्बलं मे पुत्रेषु पश्यस्येतज्जनार्दन । प्रत्यक्षं ते न ते किञ्चित्परोक्षं शत्रुकर्शन ॥५-१२९-२५॥
yāvadbalaṃ me putreṣu paśyasyetajjanārdana । pratyakṣaṃ te na te kiñcitparokṣaṃ śatrukarśana ॥5-129-25॥

(As much strength as you see in my sons, O Janardana, is directly to you, not indirectly, O enemy tormentor.)
O Janardana, the strength you see in my sons is directly evident to you and not hidden, O tormentor of enemies.
कुरूणां शममिच्छन्तं यतमानं च केशव । विदित्वैतामवस्थां मे नातिशङ्कितुमर्हसि ॥५-१२९-२६॥
kurūṇāṃ śamam icchantaṃ yatamānaṃ ca keśava । viditvaitām avasthāṃ me nātiśaṅkitum arhasi ॥5-129-26॥

न मे पापोऽस्त्यभिप्रायः पाण्डवान्प्रति केशव । ज्ञातमेव हि ते वाक्यं यन्मयोक्तः सुयोधनः ॥५-१२९-२७॥
na me pāpo'styabhiprāyaḥ pāṇḍavānprati keśava । jñātameva hi te vākyaṃ yanmayoktaḥ suyodhanaḥ ॥5-129-27॥

(O Keshava, there is no evil intention of mine towards the Pandavas. Indeed, the words spoken by me, Suyodhana, are known to you.)

जानन्ति कुरवः सर्वे राजानश्चैव पार्थिवाः । शमे प्रयतमानं मां सर्वयत्नेन माधव ॥५-१२९-२८॥
jānanti kuravaḥ sarve rājānaścaiva pārthivāḥ । śame prayatamānaṃ māṃ sarvayatnena mādhava ॥5-129-28॥
[जानन्ति (jānanti) - know; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - Kurus; सर्वे (sarve) - all; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - princes; शमे (śame) - in peace; प्रयतमानं (prayatamānaṃ) - endeavoring; मां (māṃ) - me; सर्वयत्नेन (sarvayatnena) - with all effort; माधव (mādhava) - Madhava;]
(The Kurus, all the kings and princes, know me endeavoring in peace with all effort, O Madhava.)
O Madhava, all the Kurus, kings, and princes are aware of my sincere efforts towards peace.
ततोऽब्रवीन्महाबाहुर्धृतराष्ट्रं जनेश्वरम् । द्रोणं पितामहं भीष्मं क्षत्तारं बाह्लिकं कृपम् ॥५-१२९-२९॥

(Then the mighty-armed said to Dhritarashtra, the king of people, Drona, the grandfather Bhishma, the minister Bahlika, and Kripa.)

(Directly this of you all which happened in the Kuru assembly, as and like an ill-mannered person the foolish one out of anger repeatedly rose.)
You all directly witnessed what happened in the Kuru assembly, where the foolish one repeatedly rose in anger like an ill-mannered person.
वदत्यनीशमात्मानं धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः । आपृच्छे भवतः सर्वान्गमिष्यामि युधिष्ठिरम् ॥५-१२९-३१॥
vadatyanīśamātmānaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ । āpṛcche bhavataḥ sarvāngamiṣyāmi yudhiṣṭhiram ॥5-129-31॥
[वदति (vadati) - says; अनीशम् (anīśam) - powerless; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king; आपृच्छे (āpṛcche) - I ask leave; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I will go; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - to Yudhishthira;]
