वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana spoke:
कुन्त्यास्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा भीष्मद्रोणौ महारथौ । दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यमूचतुः शासनातिगम् ॥५-१३६-१॥
Upon hearing Kunti's words, the great warriors Bhishma and Drona addressed Duryodhana, who was defying authority, with these words.
श्रुतं ते पुरुषव्याघ्र कुन्त्याः कृष्णस्य संनिधौ । वाक्यमर्थवदव्यग्रमुक्तं धर्म्यमनुत्तमम् ॥५-१३६-२॥
O tiger among men, you have heard the meaningful and calmly spoken righteous speech of Kunti in the presence of Krishna, which is excellent.
तत्करिष्यन्ति कौन्तेया वासुदेवस्य संमतम् । न हि ते जातु शाम्येरन्नृते राज्येन कौरव ॥५-१३६-३॥
The sons of Kunti will act according to the wishes of Vasudeva. They will never find peace without the kingdom, O Kaurava.
क्लेशिता हि त्वया पार्था धर्मपाशसितास्तदा । सभायां द्रौपदी चैव तैश्च तन्मर्षितं तव ॥५-१३६-४॥
Indeed, the sons of Pritha were tormented by you and bound by duty. Then, in the assembly, Draupadi, along with them, endured that because of you.
कृतास्त्रं ह्यर्जुनं प्राप्य भीमं च कृतनिश्रमम् । गाण्डीवं चेषुधी चैव रथं च ध्वजमेव च ॥ सहायं वासुदेवं च न क्षंस्यति युधिष्ठिरः ॥५-१३६-५॥
Yudhishthira, having acquired the skilled Arjuna and the rested Bhima, along with their weapons and chariot, and with Vasudeva by his side, will not show forgiveness.
प्रत्यक्षं ते महाबाहो यथा पार्थेन धीमता । विराटनगरे पूर्वं सर्वे स्म युधि निर्जिताः ॥५-१३६-६॥
O mighty-armed one, as you directly witnessed, all were conquered in battle by the wise Arjuna in the city of Virata before.
दानवान्घोरकर्माणो निवातकवचान्युधि । रौद्रमस्त्रं समाधाय दग्धवानस्त्रवह्निना ॥५-१३६-७॥
The demons known as Nivātakavacās, notorious for their terrible deeds, were incinerated in battle by the fierce weapon, wielded with the fire of weapons.
कर्णप्रभृतयश्चेमे त्वं चापि कवची रथी । मोक्षिता घोषयात्रायां पर्याप्तं तन्निदर्शनम् ॥५-१३६-८॥
Karna and others, including you, the armored charioteer, were released in the grand procession, which is a sufficient example.
प्रशाम्य भरतश्रेष्ठ भ्रातृभिः सह पाण्डवैः । रक्षेमां पृथिवीं सर्वां मृत्योर्दंष्ट्रान्तरं गताम् ॥५-१३६-९॥
Calm yourself, O noble Bharata, and with your brothers and the Pandavas, safeguard the whole earth that has fallen into the clutches of death.
ज्येष्ठो भ्राता धर्मशीलो वत्सलः श्लक्ष्णवाक्षुचिः । तं गच्छ पुरुषव्याघ्रं व्यपनीयेह किल्बिषम् ॥५-१३६-१०॥
Go to your eldest brother, who is virtuous, affectionate, gentle-spoken, and pure, and who is like a tiger among men, to remove your sins here.
दृष्टश्चेत्त्वं पाण्डवेन व्यपनीतशरासनः । प्रसन्नभ्रुकुटिः श्रीमान्कृता शान्तिः कुलस्य नः ॥५-१३६-११॥
If you are seen by Pandava with your bow put away and a clear, prosperous demeanor, it will bring peace to our family.
तमभ्येत्य सहामात्यः परिष्वज्य नृपात्मजम् । अभिवादय राजानं यथापूर्वमरिंदम ॥५-१३६-१२॥
Approaching him with the minister, and embracing the prince, he saluted the king as before, O subduer of enemies.
अभिवादयमानं त्वां पाणिभ्यां भीमपूर्वजः । प्रतिगृह्णातु सौहार्दात्कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥५-१३६-१३॥
As you greet with folded hands, may Yudhishthira, the elder brother of Bhima and son of Kunti, accept you with friendship.
सिंहस्कन्धोरुबाहुस्त्वां वृत्तायतमहाभुजः । परिष्वजतु बाहुभ्यां भीमः प्रहरतां वरः ॥५-१३६-१४॥
Bhima, with his lion-like shoulders and strong arms, should embrace you, as he is the best among fighters.
सिंहग्रीवो गुडाकेशस्ततस्त्वां पुष्करेक्षणः । अभिवादयतां पार्थः कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः ॥५-१३६-१५॥
The lion-necked Gudakesha, then the lotus-eyed one salutes you, Partha, the son of Kunti, Dhananjaya.
आश्विनेयौ नरव्याघ्रौ रूपेणाप्रतिमौ भुवि । तौ च त्वां गुरुवत्प्रेम्णा पूजया प्रत्युदीयताम् ॥५-१३६-१६॥
The sons of Ashvini, who are like tigers among men and incomparable in form on earth, should greet you with love and reverence as they would a teacher.
मुञ्चन्त्वानन्दजाश्रूणि दाशार्हप्रमुखा नृपाः । सङ्गच्छ भ्रातृभिः सार्धं मानं सन्त्यज्य पार्थिव ॥५-१३६-१७॥
Let the kings led by the Dasharhas shed tears of joy. Meet with your brothers, setting aside pride, O prince.
प्रशाधि पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां ततस्तं भ्रातृभिः सह । समालिङ्ग्य च हर्षेण नृपा यान्तु परस्परम् ॥५-१३६-१८॥
Rule the entire earth, and then, after embracing him with joy, the kings along with their brothers may go to each other.
अलं युद्धेन राजेन्द्र सुहृदां शृणु कारणम् । ध्रुवं विनाशो युद्धे हि क्षत्रियाणां प्रदृश्यते ॥५-१३६-१९॥
O king of kings, enough of war; listen to the reason of your friends. It is certain that the destruction of warriors is evident in battle.
ज्योतींषि प्रतिकूलानि दारुणा मृगपक्षिणः । उत्पाता विविधा वीर दृश्यन्ते क्षत्रनाशनाः ॥५-१३६-२०॥
O hero, various adverse lights, fierce beasts and birds, and portents are seen, which are destructive to warriors.
विशेषत इहास्माकं निमित्तानि विनाशने । उल्काभिर्हि प्रदीप्ताभिर्वध्यते पृतना तव ॥५-१३६-२१॥
Especially here, our omens indicate destruction; your army is being slain by blazing meteors.
वाहनान्यप्रहृष्टानि रुदन्तीव विशां पते । गृध्रास्ते पर्युपासन्ते सैन्यानि च समन्ततः ॥५-१३६-२२॥
The vehicles appear to be crying in distress, O lord of the people, as if they are not delighted. Vultures are surrounding the armies from all sides.
नगरं न यथापूर्वं तथा राजनिवेशनम् । शिवाश्चाशिवनिर्घोषा दीप्तां सेवन्ति वै दिशम् ॥५-१३६-२३॥
The city and the royal palace are not as they were before. Auspicious and inauspicious sounds fill the bright direction.
कुरु वाक्यं पितुर्मातुरस्माकं च हितैषिणाम् । त्वय्यायत्तो महाबाहो शमो व्यायाम एव च ॥५-१३६-२४॥
O mighty-armed, follow the words of your father, mother, and well-wishers. In you lies the responsibility for both peace and effort.
न चेत्करिष्यसि वचः सुहृदामरिकर्शन । तप्स्यसे वाहिनीं दृष्ट्वा पार्थबाणप्रपीडिताम् ॥५-१३६-२५॥
If you do not heed the advice of your friends, O slayer of enemies, you will witness the suffering of the army, afflicted by Arjuna's arrows.
भीमस्य च महानादं नदतः शुष्मिणो रणे । श्रुत्वा स्मर्तासि मे वाक्यं गाण्डीवस्य च निस्वनम् ॥ यद्येतदपसव्यं ते भविष्यति वचो मम ॥५-१३६-२६॥
Upon hearing the mighty roar of Bhima in battle and the twang of Gandiva, you will recall my words. If this proves inauspicious for you, my words will come true.
