vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana spoke:
kuntyāstu vacanaṃ śrutvā bhīṣmadroṇau mahārathau । duryodhanamidaṃ vākyamūcatuḥ śāsanātigam ॥5-136-1॥
Upon hearing Kunti's words, the great warriors Bhishma and Drona addressed Duryodhana, who was defying authority, with these words.
śrutaṃ te puruṣavyāghra kuntyāḥ kṛṣṇasya saṃnidhau । vākyamarthavadavyagramuktaṃ dharmyamanutthamam ॥5-136-2॥
O tiger among men, you have heard the meaningful and calmly spoken righteous speech of Kunti in the presence of Krishna, which is excellent.
tatkariṣyanti kaunteyā vāsudevasya saṁmatam । na hi te jātu śāmyerannṛte rājyena kaurava ॥5-136-3॥
The sons of Kunti will act according to the wishes of Vasudeva. They will never find peace without the kingdom, O Kaurava.
kleśitā hi tvayā pārthā dharmapāśasitāstadā । sabhāyāṃ draupadī caiva taiśca tanmarṣitaṃ tava ॥5-136-4॥
Indeed, the sons of Pritha were tormented by you and bound by duty. Then, in the assembly, Draupadi, along with them, endured that because of you.
kṛtāstraṃ hyarjunaṃ prāpya bhīmaṃ ca kṛtaniśramam । gāṇḍīvaṃ ceṣudhī caiva rathaṃ ca dhvajameva ca ॥ sahāyaṃ vāsudevaṃ ca na kṣaṃsyati yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥5-136-5॥
Yudhishthira, having acquired the skilled Arjuna and the rested Bhima, along with their weapons and chariot, and with Vasudeva by his side, will not show forgiveness.
pratyakṣaṃ te mahābāho yathā pārthena dhīmatā । virāṭanagare pūrvaṃ sarve sma yudhi nirjitāḥ ॥5-136-6॥
O mighty-armed one, as you directly witnessed, all were conquered in battle by the wise Arjuna in the city of Virata before.
dānavān ghorakarmāṇo nivātakavacān yudhi । raudram astraṃ samādhāya dagdhavān astravahninā ॥5-136-7॥
The demons known as Nivātakavacās, notorious for their terrible deeds, were incinerated in battle by the fierce weapon, wielded with the fire of weapons.
karṇaprabhṛtayaśceme tvaṃ cāpi kavacī rathī । mokṣitā ghoṣayātrāyāṃ paryāptaṃ tannidarśanam ॥5-136-8॥
Karna and others, including you, the armored charioteer, were released in the grand procession, which is a sufficient example.
praśāmya bharataśreṣṭha bhrātṛbhiḥ saha pāṇḍavaiḥ । rakṣemāṃ pṛthivīṃ sarvāṃ mṛtyordaṃṣṭrāntaraṃ gatām ॥5-136-9॥
Calm yourself, O noble Bharata, and with your brothers and the Pandavas, safeguard the whole earth that has fallen into the clutches of death.
jyeṣṭho bhrātā dharmaśīlo vatsalaḥ ślakṣṇavākṣuciḥ । taṃ gaccha puruṣavyāghraṃ vyapanīyeha kilbiṣam ॥5-136-10॥
Go to your eldest brother, who is virtuous, affectionate, gentle-spoken, and pure, and who is like a tiger among men, to remove your sins here.
dṛṣṭaścettvaṃ pāṇḍavena vyapanītaśarāsanaḥ । prasannabhru kuṭiḥ śrīmānkṛtā śāntiḥ kulasya naḥ ॥5-136-11॥
If you are seen by Pandava with your bow put away and a clear, prosperous demeanor, it will bring peace to our family.
tamabhyetya sahāmātyaḥ pariṣvajya nṛpātmajam । abhivādaya rājānaṃ yathāpūrvamariṃdama ॥5-136-12॥
Approaching him with the minister, and embracing the prince, he saluted the king as before, O subduer of enemies.
abhivādayamānaṃ tvāṃ pāṇibhyāṃ bhīmapūrvajaḥ । pratigṛhṇātu sauhārdātkuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥5-136-13॥
As you greet with folded hands, may Yudhishthira, the elder brother of Bhima and son of Kunti, accept you with friendship.
siṃhaskandhorubāhustvāṃ vṛttāyatamahābhujaḥ । pariṣvajatu bāhubhyāṃ bhīmaḥ praharatāṃ varaḥ ॥5-136-14॥
Bhima, with his lion-like shoulders and strong arms, should embrace you, as he is the best among fighters.
siṃhagrīvo guḍākeśastatastvāṃ puṣkarekṣaṇaḥ । abhivādayatāṃ pārthaḥ kuntīputro dhanañjayaḥ ॥5-136-15॥
The lion-necked Gudakesha, then the lotus-eyed one salutes you, Partha, the son of Kunti, Dhananjaya.
āśvineyau naravyāghrau rūpeṇāpratimau bhuvi । tau ca tvāṃ guruvatpremṇā pūjayā pratyudīyatām ॥5-136-16॥
The sons of Ashvini, who are like tigers among men and incomparable in form on earth, should greet you with love and reverence as they would a teacher.
muñcantvānandajāśrūṇi dāśārhapramukhā nṛpāḥ । saṅgaccha bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṃ mānaṃ santyajya pārthiva ॥5-136-17॥
Let the kings led by the Dasharhas shed tears of joy. Meet with your brothers, setting aside pride, O prince.
praśādhi pṛthivīṃ kṛtsnāṃ tatastaṃ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha । samāliṅgya ca harṣeṇa nṛpā yāntu parasparam ॥5-136-18॥
Rule the entire earth, and then, after embracing him with joy, the kings along with their brothers may go to each other.
alaṁ yuddhena rājendra suhṛdāṁ śṛṇu kāraṇam । dhruvaṁ vināśo yuddhe hi kṣatriyāṇāṁ pradṛśyate ॥5-136-19॥
O king of kings, enough of war; listen to the reason of your friends. It is certain that the destruction of warriors is evident in battle.
jyotīṃṣi pratikūlāni dāruṇā mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ । utpātā vividhā vīra dṛśyante kṣatranāśanāḥ ॥5-136-20॥
O hero, various adverse lights, fierce beasts and birds, and portents are seen, which are destructive to warriors.
viśeṣata ihāsmākaṃ nimittāni vināśane । ulkābhirhi pradīptābhirvadhyate pṛtanā tava ॥5-136-21॥
Especially here, our omens indicate destruction; your army is being slain by blazing meteors.
vāhanānyaprahṛṣṭāni rudantīva viśāṃ pate । gṛdhrāste paryupāsante sainyāni ca samantataḥ ॥5-136-22॥
The vehicles appear to be crying in distress, O lord of the people, as if they are not delighted. Vultures are surrounding the armies from all sides.
nagaraṁ na yathāpūrvaṁ tathā rājaniveśanam । śivāścāśivanirghoṣā dīptāṁ sevanti vai diśam ॥5-136-23॥
The city and the royal palace are not as they were before. Auspicious and inauspicious sounds fill the bright direction.
kuru vākyaṃ piturmāturasmākaṃ ca hitaiṣiṇām । tvayyāyatto mahābāho śamo vyāyāma eva ca ॥5-136-24॥
O mighty-armed, follow the words of your father, mother, and well-wishers. In you lies the responsibility for both peace and effort.
na cetkariṣyasi vacaḥ suhṛdāmarikarśana । tapsyase vāhinīṃ dṛṣṭvā pārthabāṇaprapīḍitām ॥5-136-25॥
If you do not heed the advice of your friends, O slayer of enemies, you will witness the suffering of the army, afflicted by Arjuna's arrows.
bhīmasya ca mahānādaṃ nadataḥ śuṣmiṇo raṇe । śrutvā smartāsi me vākyaṃ gāṇḍīvasya ca nisvanam ॥ yadyetadapasavyaṃ te bhaviṣyati vaco mama ॥5-136-26॥
Upon hearing the mighty roar of Bhima in battle and the twang of Gandiva, you will recall my words. If this proves inauspicious for you, my words will come true.
