हिरण्वत्यां निविष्टेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु। दुर्योधनो महाराज कर्णेन सह भारत ॥५-१५७-१॥
hiraṇvatyāṃ niviṣṭeṣu pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu। duryodhano mahārāja karṇena saha bhārata ॥5-157-1॥

In the region of Hiranyavati, where the noble Pandavas resided, King Duryodhana, along with Karna, was present, O Bharata.
सौबलेन च राजेन्द्र तथा दुःशासनेन च। आहूयोपह्वरे राजन्नुलूकमिदमब्रवीत् ॥५-१५७-२॥

उलूक गच्छ कैतव्य पाण्डवान्सहसोमकान्। गत्वा मम वचो ब्रूहि वासुदेवस्य शृण्वतः ॥५-१५७-३॥
ulūka gaccha kaitavya pāṇḍavānsahasomakān। gatvā mama vaco brūhi vāsudevasya śṛṇvataḥ ॥5-157-3॥

(Uluka, go, Kaitavya, to the Pandavas and Somakas. Having gone, speak my words to Vasudeva who is hearing.)
Uluka, go to the Pandavas and Somakas, O Kaitavya. After reaching there, convey my message to Vasudeva who is listening.
इदं तत्समनुप्राप्तं वर्षपूगाभिचिन्तितम्। पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च युद्धं लोकभयङ्करम् ॥५-१५७-४॥
idaṃ tatsamanuprāptaṃ varṣapūgābhicintitam. pāṇḍavānāṃ kurūṇāṃ ca yuddhaṃ lokabhayaṅkaram ॥5-157-4॥

(This that has arrived, contemplated for years by the group, is the war of the Pandavas and the Kauravas, terrifying to the world.)
This is the long-anticipated war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, dreaded by the world.
यदेतत्कत्थनावाक्यं सञ्जयो महदब्रवीत्। मध्ये कुरूणां कौन्तेय तस्य कालोऽयमागतः ॥ यथा वः सम्प्रतिज्ञातं तत्सर्वं क्रियतामिति ॥५-१५७-५॥
yadetatkatthanāvākyaṃ sañjayo mahadabravīt| madhye kurūṇāṃ kaunteya tasya kālo'yamāgataḥ ॥ yathā vaḥ sampratijñātaṃ tatsarvaṃ kriyatāmiti ॥5-157-5॥
[यत् (yat) - that; एतत् (etat) - this; कत्थन (katthana) - boasting; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; सञ्जयः (sañjayaḥ) - Sanjaya; महत् (mahat) - great; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; तस्य (tasya) - his; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; अयम् (ayam) - this; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has come; यथा (yathā) - as; वः (vaḥ) - your; सम्प्रतिज्ञातम् (sampratijñātam) - promised; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - be done; इति (iti) - thus;]
(That this boasting speech Sanjaya greatly said. In the midst of the Kurus, O son of Kunti, his time has come. As promised by you, let all that be done thus.)

अमर्षं राज्यहरणं वनवासं च पाण्डव। द्रौपद्याश्च परिक्लेशं संस्मरन्पुरुषो भव ॥५-१५७-६॥

(Remembering the anger, the loss of the kingdom, the forest exile, O Pandava, and the suffering of Draupadi, be a man.)
O Pandava, remember the anger, the loss of your kingdom, the exile to the forest, and the suffering of Draupadi, and stand firm as a man.
यदर्थं क्षत्रिया सूते गर्भं तदिदमागतम्। बलं वीर्यं च शौर्यं च परं चाप्यस्त्रलाघवम् ॥ पौरुषं दर्शयन्युद्धे कोपस्य कुरु निष्कृतिम् ॥५-१५७-७॥
yadarthaṃ kṣatriyā sūte garbhaṃ tadidamāgatam| balaṃ vīryaṃ ca śauryaṃ ca paraṃ cāpyastralāghavam ॥ pauruṣaṃ darśayanyuddhe kopasya kuru niṣkṛtim ॥5-157-7॥

(For which purpose a Kshatriya woman bears a child, that has come. Strength, valor, heroism, and supreme skill in weapons. Showing manliness in battle, do atonement of anger.)
The purpose for which a Kshatriya woman gives birth to a child has manifested here. It is to display strength, valor, heroism, and supreme skill in weaponry. Show your manliness in battle and make amends for your anger.
परिक्लिष्टस्य दीनस्य दीर्घकालोषितस्य च। न स्फुटेद्धृदयं कस्य ऐश्वर्याद्भ्रंशितस्य च ॥५-१५७-८॥
parikliṣṭasya dīnasya dīrghakāloṣitasya ca। na sphuṭeddhṛdayaṃ kasya aiśvaryādbhraṃśitasya ca ॥5-157-8॥
[परिक्लिष्टस्य (parikliṣṭasya) - afflicted; दीनस्य (dīnasya) - miserable; दीर्घकालोषितस्य (dīrghakāloṣitasya) - long-time-resident; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; स्फुटेत् (sphuṭet) - burst; हृदयं (hṛdayaṃ) - heart; कस्य (kasya) - whose; ऐश्वर्याद् (aiśvaryād) - from wealth; भ्रंशितस्य (bhraṃśitasya) - deprived; च (ca) - and;]
(Whose heart would not burst, being afflicted, miserable, a long-time resident, and deprived of wealth?)
Who would not feel heartbroken when afflicted, miserable, having lived long in such conditions, and then deprived of wealth?
कुले जातस्य शूरस्य परवित्तेषु गृध्यतः। आच्छिन्नं राज्यमाक्रम्य कोपं कस्य न दीपयेत् ॥५-१५७-९॥
kule jātasya śūrasya paravitteṣu gṛdhyataḥ। ācchinnaṃ rājyamākramya kopaṃ kasya na dīpayet ॥5-157-9॥
[कुले (kule) - in family; जातस्य (jātasya) - born; शूरस्य (śūrasya) - of a hero; परवित्तेषु (paravitteṣu) - in others' wealth; गृध्यतः (gṛdhyataḥ) - coveting; आच्छिन्नं (ācchinnaṃ) - seized; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; आक्रम्य (ākramya) - having attacked; कोपं (kopaṃ) - anger; कस्य (kasya) - whose; न (na) - not; दीपयेत् (dīpayet) - would kindle;]
(In the family of a hero born, coveting others' wealth, having seized the kingdom by attack, whose anger would not kindle?)
In the family of a hero who covets others' wealth and seizes kingdoms by force, whose anger would not be kindled?
यत्तदुक्तं महद्वाक्यं कर्मणा तद्विभाव्यताम्। अकर्मणा कत्थितेन सन्तः कुपुरुषं विदुः ॥५-१५७-१०॥
yattaduktaṃ mahāvākyaṃ karmaṇā tadvibhāvyatām। akarmaṇā katthitena santaḥ kupuruṣaṃ viduḥ ॥5-157-10॥
[यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - spoken; महत् (mahat) - great; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - sentence; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; तत् (tat) - that; विभाव्यताम् (vibhāvyatām) - should be manifested; अकर्मणा (akarmaṇā) - without action; कत्थितेन (katthitena) - by boasting; सन्तः (santaḥ) - wise ones; कुपुरुषं (kupuruṣaṃ) - a bad person; विदुः (viduḥ) - know;]
(That which is spoken as a great sentence should be manifested by action; without action, by boasting, the wise ones know a bad person.)
The wise recognize a person as bad if they boast without action, even if they speak great words.
अमित्राणां वशे स्थानं राज्यस्य च पुनर्भवः। द्वावर्थौ युध्यमानस्य तस्मात्कुरुत पौरुषम् ॥५-१५७-११॥
amitrāṇāṃ vaśe sthānaṃ rājyasya ca punarbhavaḥ। dvāv arthau yudhyamānasya tasmāt kuruta pauruṣam ॥5-157-11॥
[अमित्राणां (amitrāṇāṃ) - of enemies; वशे (vaśe) - under control; स्थानं (sthānaṃ) - position; राज्यस्य (rājyasya) - of the kingdom; च (ca) - and; पुनर्भवः (punarbhavaḥ) - restoration; द्वौ (dvau) - two; अर्थौ (arthau) - purposes; युध्यमानस्य (yudhyamānasya) - of the one fighting; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; कुरुत (kuruta) - do; पौरुषम् (pauruṣam) - valor;]
(The position under the control of enemies and the restoration of the kingdom are two purposes of the one fighting; therefore, do valor.)

अस्मान्वा त्वं पराजित्य प्रशाधि पृथिवीमिमाम्। अथ वा निहतोऽस्माभिर्वीरलोकं गमिष्यसि ॥५-१५७-१२॥
asmānvā tvaṃ parājitya praśādhi pṛthivīmimām। atha vā nihato'smābhirvīralokaṃ gamiṣyasi ॥5-157-12॥
[अस्मान् (asmān) - us; वा (vā) - or; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पराजित्य (parājitya) - having conquered; प्रशाधि (praśādhi) - rule; पृथिवीमिमाम् (pṛthivīmimām) - this earth; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; निहतः (nihataḥ) - killed; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; वीरलोकं (vīralokam) - to the world of heroes; गमिष्यसि (gamiṣyasi) - you will go;]
(Or having conquered us, you rule this earth. Or, killed by us, you will go to the world of heroes.)
You may either conquer us and rule this earth, or if defeated by us, you will ascend to the world of heroes.
राष्ट्रात्प्रव्राजनं क्लेशं वनवासं च पाण्डव। कृष्णायाश्च परिक्लेशं संस्मरन्पुरुषो भव ॥५-१५७-१३॥
rāṣṭrātpravrājanaṃ kleśaṃ vanavāsaṃ ca pāṇḍava। kṛṣṇāyāśca parikleśaṃ saṃsmaranpuruṣo bhava ॥5-157-13॥
[राष्ट्रात् (rāṣṭrāt) - from the kingdom; प्रव्राजनं (pravrājanaṃ) - exile; क्लेशं (kleśaṃ) - suffering; वनवासं (vanavāsaṃ) - forest dwelling; च (ca) - and; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pandava; कृष्णायाः (kṛṣṇāyāḥ) - of Krishna; च (ca) - and; परिक्लेशं (parikleśaṃ) - great distress; संस्मरन् (saṃsmaran) - remembering; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; भव (bhava) - be;]
(From the kingdom, exile, suffering, forest dwelling, and O Pandava, of Krishna and great distress remembering, be a man.)
O Pandava, remember the exile from the kingdom, the suffering, the forest dwelling, and the great distress of Krishna, and be a man.
अप्रियाणां च वचने प्रव्रजत्सु पुनः पुनः। अमर्षं दर्शयाद्य त्वममर्षो ह्येव पौरुषम् ॥५-१५७-१४॥
apriyāṇāṃ ca vacane pravrajatsu punaḥ punaḥ। amarṣaṃ darśayādya tvamamarṣo hyeva pauruṣam ॥5-157-14॥
[अप्रियाणां (apriyāṇāṃ) - of unpleasant; च (ca) - and; वचने (vacane) - in words; प्रव्रजत्सु (pravrajatsu) - departing; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अमर्षं (amarṣam) - impatience; दर्शय (darśaya) - show; अद्य (adya) - today; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अमर्षः (amarṣaḥ) - impatience; हि (hi) - indeed; एव (eva) - only; पौरुषम् (pauruṣam) - manliness;]
(In the words of unpleasantness, departing again and again, show impatience today, for impatience indeed is only manliness.)
Show your impatience today in the face of unpleasant words, for it is indeed a sign of true manliness to do so repeatedly.
क्रोधो बलं तथा वीर्यं ज्ञानयोगोऽस्त्रलाघवम्। इह ते पार्थ दृश्यन्तां सङ्ग्रामे पुरुषो भव ॥५-१५७-१५॥
krodho balaṃ tathā vīryaṃ jñānayogo'stralāghavam। iha te pārtha dṛśyantāṃ saṅgrāme puruṣo bhava ॥5-157-15॥
[क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; बलम् (balam) - strength; तथा (tathā) - and; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - valor; ज्ञानयोगः (jñānayogaḥ) - knowledge and discipline; अस्त्रलाघवम् (astralāghavam) - skill in weapons; इह (iha) - here; ते (te) - your; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pritha; दृश्यन्ताम् (dṛśyantām) - let be seen; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a man; भव (bhava) - be;]
(Anger, strength, and valor, knowledge and discipline, skill in weapons; here, O son of Pritha, let your qualities be seen in battle, be a man.)
O son of Pritha, let your anger, strength, valor, knowledge, discipline, and skill in weapons be demonstrated here in battle; stand as a true warrior.
तं च तूबरकं मूढं बह्वाशिनमविद्यकम्। उलूक मद्वचो ब्रूया असकृद्भीमसेनकम् ॥५-१५७-१६॥
taṃ ca tūbarakaṃ mūḍhaṃ bahvāśinamavidyakam। ulūka madvaco brūyā asakṛdbhīmasenakam ॥5-157-16॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; च (ca) - and; तूबरकं (tūbarakaṃ) - foolish; मूढं (mūḍhaṃ) - stupid; बह्वाशिनम् (bahvāśinam) - gluttonous; अविद्यकम् (avidyakam) - ignorant; उलूक (ulūka) - Uluka; मद्वचः (madvacaḥ) - my words; ब्रूया (brūyā) - you should say; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; भीमसेनकम् (bhīmasenakam) - to Bhimasena;]
(And you should repeatedly say my words to that foolish, stupid, gluttonous, ignorant Bhimasena, O Uluka.)
O Uluka, you should repeatedly convey my message to that foolish, stupid, gluttonous, and ignorant Bhimasena.
अशक्तेनैव यच्छप्तं सभामध्ये वृकोदर। दुःशासनस्य रुधिरं पीयतां यदि शक्यते ॥५-१५७-१७॥
aśaktenaiva yacchaptaṃ sabhāmadhye vṛkodara। duḥśāsanasya rudhiraṃ pīyatāṃ yadi śakyate ॥5-157-17॥
[अशक्तेनैव (aśaktenaiva) - by the powerless; indeed; यच्छप्तं (yacchaptaṃ) - which was vowed; सभामध्ये (sabhāmadhye) - in the assembly; वृकोदर (vṛkodara) - Vrikodara; दुःशासनस्य (duḥśāsanasya) - of Duhshasana; रुधिरं (rudhiraṃ) - blood; पीयतां (pīyatāṃ) - let it be drunk; यदि (yadi) - if; शक्यते (śakyate) - possible;]
(By the powerless indeed, which was vowed in the assembly, Vrikodara, let the blood of Duhshasana be drunk, if possible.)

लोहाभिहारो निर्वृत्तः कुरुक्षेत्रमकर्दमम्। पुष्टास्तेऽश्वा भृता योधाः श्वो युध्यस्व सकेशवः ॥५-१५७-१८॥
lohābhihāro nirvṛttaḥ kurukṣetramakardamam। puṣṭāste'śvā bhṛtā yodhāḥ śvo yudhyasva sakeśavaḥ ॥5-157-18॥
[लोहाभिहारः (lohābhihāraḥ) - iron weapons; निर्वृत्तः (nirvṛttaḥ) - completed; कुरुक्षेत्रम् (kurukṣetram) - Kurukshetra; अकर्दमम् (akardamam) - free from mud; पुष्टाः (puṣṭāḥ) - nourished; ते (te) - your; अश्वाः (aśvāḥ) - horses; भृताः (bhṛtāḥ) - supported; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; श्वः (śvaḥ) - tomorrow; युध्यस्व (yudhyasva) - fight; सकेशवः (sakeśavaḥ) - with Keshava;]
(The preparation of iron weapons is completed, Kurukshetra is free from mud. Your horses are nourished, warriors are supported. Tomorrow, fight with Keshava.)
