विरथं तं समासाद्य चित्रसेनं मनस्विनम्। रथमारोपयामास विकर्णस्तनयस्तव ॥६-८२-१॥
virathaṃ taṃ samāsādya citrasenaṃ manasvinam। rathamāropayāmāsa vikarṇastanayastava ॥6-82-1॥
[विरथं (viratham) - without chariot; तं (tam) - him; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; चित्रसेनं (citrasenam) - Citraseṇa; मनस्विनम् (manasvinam) - high-minded; रथमारोपयामास (rathamāropayāmāsa) - made to ascend the chariot; विकर्णः (vikarṇaḥ) - Vikarna; तनयः (tanayaḥ) - son; तव (tava) - your;]
(Having approached the high-minded Citraseṇa, your son Vikarna made him ascend the chariot without a chariot.)
Your son Vikarna, having approached the noble Citraseṇa, helped him onto the chariot after he had lost his own.
तस्मिंस्तथा वर्तमाने तुमुले सङ्कुले भृशम्। भीष्मः शान्तनवस्तूर्णं युधिष्ठिरमुपाद्रवत् ॥६-८२-२॥
tasmiṁs tathā vartamāne tumule saṅkule bhṛśam। bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavas tūrṇaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram upādravat ॥6-82-2॥

(In that way, as the tumultuous and intensely confused situation was happening, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, quickly attacked Yudhishthira.)
In the midst of the intense and chaotic battle, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, swiftly advanced towards Yudhishthira.
ततः सरथनागाश्वाः समकम्पन्त सृञ्जयाः। मृत्योरास्यमनुप्राप्तं मेनिरे च युधिष्ठिरम् ॥६-८२-३॥

(Then, with chariots, elephants, and horses, the Sṛñjayas trembled, thinking Yudhiṣṭhira had approached death's mouth.)
Then the Sṛñjayas, along with their chariots, elephants, and horses, trembled, believing that Yudhiṣṭhira had come close to the jaws of death.
यिधिष्ठिरोऽपि कौरव्यो यमाभ्यां सहितः प्रभुः। महेष्वासं नरव्याघ्रं भीष्मं शान्तनवं ययौ ॥६-८२-४॥

(Yudhishthira, the descendant of Kuru, also together with the twins, the lord, went to Bhishma, the great archer, the tiger among men, the son of Shantanu.)
Yudhishthira, along with his brothers, approached Bhishma, the revered elder and great warrior, who was the son of Shantanu.
ततः शरसहस्राणि प्रमुञ्चन्पाण्डवो युधि। भीष्मं सञ्छादयामास यथा मेघो दिवाकरम् ॥६-८२-५॥
tataḥ śarasahasrāṇi pramuñcanpāṇḍavo yudhi। bhīṣmaṃ sañchādayāmāsa yathā megho divākaram ॥6-82-5॥

(Then, releasing thousands of arrows, the son of Pandu covered Bhishma in battle, as a cloud covers the sun.)

तेन सम्यक्प्रणीतानि शरजालानि भारत। पतिजग्राह गाङ्गेयः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥६-८२-६॥

तथैव शरजालानि भीष्मेणास्तानि मारिष। आकाशे समदृश्यन्त खगमानां व्रजा इव ॥६-८२-७॥
tathaiva śarajālāni bhīṣmeṇāstāni māriṣa। ākāśe samadṛśyanta khagamānāṃ vrajā iva ॥6-82-7॥

(In the same way, O sir, the showers of arrows discharged by Bhishma appeared in the sky like flocks of birds.)
Similarly, O sir, the arrows released by Bhishma filled the sky, resembling flocks of birds.
निमेषार्धाच्च कौन्तेयं भीष्मः शान्तनवो युधि। अदृश्यं समरे चक्रे शरजालेन भागशः ॥६-८२-८॥
nimeṣārdhāc ca kaunteyaṃ bhīṣmaḥ śāṃtanavo yudhi। adṛśyaṃ samare cakre śarajālena bhāgaśaḥ ॥6-82-8॥
[निमेषार्धात् (nimeṣārdhāt) - in half a wink; च (ca) - and; कौन्तेयं (kaunteyam) - son of Kunti; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; शान्तनवः (śāṃtanavaḥ) - son of Shantanu; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; अदृश्यं (adṛśyam) - invisible; समरे (samare) - in the war; चक्रे (cakre) - made; शरजालेन (śarajālena) - with a net of arrows; भागशः (bhāgaśaḥ) - in parts;]
(In half a wink, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, made the son of Kunti invisible in the battle with a net of arrows, in parts.)
In the blink of an eye, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, rendered the son of Kunti invisible in the battlefield by covering him with a barrage of arrows, piece by piece.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा कौरव्यस्य महात्मनः। नाराचं प्रेषयामास क्रुद्ध आशीविषोपमम् ॥६-८२-९॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā kauravyasya mahātmanaḥ। nārācaṃ preṣayāmāsa kruddha āśīviṣopamam ॥6-82-9॥

(Then King Yudhishthira, the great-souled Kaurava, sent an arrow, angry, like a serpent.)
Then, in his anger, King Yudhishthira, the noble Kaurava, sent forth an arrow that resembled a serpent.
असम्प्राप्तं ततस्तं तु क्षुरप्रेण महारथः। चिच्छेद समरे राजन्भीष्मस्तस्य धनुश्च्युतम् ॥६-८२-१०॥
asamprāptaṃ tatastaṃ tu kṣurapreṇa mahārathaḥ। ciccheda samare rājanbhīṣmastasya dhanuścyutam ॥6-82-10॥
[असम्प्राप्तं (asamprāptaṃ) - not yet reached; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तं (taṃ) - that; तु (tu) - but; क्षुरप्रेण (kṣurapreṇa) - with a razor-sharp arrow; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - the great chariot-warrior; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - cut off; समरे (samare) - in battle; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; तस्य (tasya) - his; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; च्युतम् (cyutam) - fallen;]
(Not yet reached, then that, but with a razor-sharp arrow, the great chariot-warrior cut off in battle, O king, Bhishma, his bow fallen.)
Before it could reach, O king, Bhishma, the great chariot-warrior, cut off his bow with a razor-sharp arrow in the battle.
तं तु छित्त्वा रणे भीष्मो नाराचं कालसंमितम्। निजघ्ने कौरवेन्द्रस्य हयान्काञ्चनभूषणान् ॥६-८२-११॥
taṃ tu chittvā raṇe bhīṣmo nārācaṃ kālasaṃmitam। nijaghne kauravendrasya hayānkāñcanabhūṣaṇān ॥6-82-11॥

(But having cut that arrow equal to time in battle, Bhishma killed the golden adorned horses of the Kaurava king.)
In the battle, Bhishma, after cutting the arrow that was as powerful as time itself, killed the golden-adorned horses of the Kaurava king.
हताश्वं तु रथं त्यक्त्वा धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। आरुरोह रथं तूर्णं नकुलस्य महात्मनः ॥६-८२-१२॥

(Having abandoned the chariot with the horses killed, Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, quickly ascended the chariot of the great-souled Nakula.)
Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, left his chariot with the horses slain and quickly climbed onto Nakula's chariot, who is known for his great soul.
यमावपि सुसङ्क्रुद्धः समासाद्य रणे तदा। शरैः सञ्छादयामास भीष्मः परपुरञ्जयः ॥६-८२-१३॥
yamāvapi susaṅkruddhaḥ samāsādya raṇe tadā। śaraiḥ sañchādayāmāsa bhīṣmaḥ parapurañjayaḥ ॥6-82-13॥

(The two Yamas, also very angry, having approached in battle then, Bhishma, the conqueror of enemy cities, covered with arrows.)

(They, but having seen, O great king, afflicted by Bhishma's arrows, then went into great thought with the desire of Bhishma's killing.)
Upon seeing the two afflicted by Bhishma's arrows, O great king, they then went into deep contemplation with the desire to kill Bhishma.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो वश्यान्राज्ञस्तान्समचोदयत्। भीष्मं शान्तनवं सर्वे निहतेति सुहृद्गणान् ॥६-८२-१५॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiro vaśyān rājñas tān samacodayat। bhīṣmaṃ śāṃtanavaṃ sarve nihata iti suhṛdgaṇān ॥6-82-15॥

(Then Yudhishthira urged those obedient to the king: "Bhishma, son of Shantanu, is slain," thus to all the friends.)

(Then all the kings, having heard the speech of Pārtha, surrounded the grandfather with a great chariot army.)
Upon hearing Pārtha's words, all the kings encircled the grandfather with a mighty array of chariots.
स समन्तात्परिवृतः पिता देवव्रतस्तव। चिक्रीद धनुषा राजन्पातयानो महारथान् ॥६-८२-१७॥
sa samantātparivṛtaḥ pitā devavratas tava। cikrīda dhanuṣā rājanpātayāno mahārathān ॥6-82-17॥

(He, your father Devavrata, surrounded all around, played with the bow, O king, causing the great charioteers to fall.)
Your father Devavrata, surrounded on all sides, skillfully wielded his bow, O king, bringing down the great charioteers.
तं चरन्तं रणे पार्था ददृशुः कौरवं युधि। मृगमध्यं प्रविश्येव यथा सिंहशिशुं वने ॥६-८२-१८॥
taṁ carantaṁ raṇe pārthā dadṛśuḥ kauravaṁ yudhi। mṛgamadhyaṁ praviśyeva yathā siṁhaśiśuṁ vane ॥6-82-18॥

(The sons of Pṛthā saw him, the Kaurava, moving in battle, like a lion cub entering among deer in the forest.)
The sons of Pṛthā observed the Kaurava moving in the battlefield, akin to a lion cub entering a herd of deer in the forest.
तर्जयानं रणे शूरांस्त्रासयानं च सायकैः। दृष्ट्वा त्रेसुर्महाराज सिंहं मृगगणा इव ॥६-८२-१९॥
tarjayānaṃ raṇe śūrāṃstrāsayānaṃ ca sāyakaiḥ। dṛṣṭvā tresurmahārāja siṃhaṃ mṛgagaṇā iva ॥6-82-19॥

रणे भरतसिंहस्य ददृशुः क्षत्रिया गतिम्। अग्नेर्वायुसहायस्य यथा कक्षं दिधक्षतः ॥६-८२-२०॥
raṇe bharatasiṃhasya dadṛśuḥ kṣatriyā gatim। agnervāyusahāyasya yathā kakṣaṃ didhakṣataḥ ॥6-82-20॥

(In the battle, the warriors saw the movement of the lion of Bharata, as of fire aided by the wind, burning a forest.)

शिरांसि रथिनां भीष्मः पातयामास संयुगे। तालेभ्य इव पक्वानि फलानि कुशलो नरः ॥६-८२-२१॥

(Bhishma caused the heads of the charioteers to fall in battle, like a skilled man causes ripe fruits to fall from palm trees.)
