tatastadbāṇavarṣaṃ tu duḥsahaṃ dānavairapi । dadhāra yudhi rājendro yathā varṣaṃ mahādvipaḥ ॥6-88-1॥

(Then that shower of arrows, indeed unbearable even by the demons, was borne in battle by the king of kings, as a great elephant bears the rain.)
Then the king of kings bore that unbearable shower of arrows in battle, just as a great elephant withstands the rain.
ततः क्रोधसमाविष्टो निःश्वसन्निव पन्नगः । संशयं परमं प्राप्तः पुत्रस्ते भरतर्षभ ॥६-८८-२॥
tataḥ krodhasamāviṣṭo niḥśvasanniva pannagaḥ । saṃśayaṃ paramaṃ prāptaḥ putraste bharatarṣabha ॥6-88-2॥

मुमोच निशितांस्तीक्ष्णान्नाराचान्पञ्चविंशतिम् । तेऽपतन्सहसा राजंस्तस्मिन्राक्षसपुङ्गवे ॥ आशीविषा इव क्रुद्धाः पर्वते गन्धमादने ॥६-८८-३॥

(He released twenty-five sharp and keen arrows. They fell suddenly, O king, on that foremost of demons, like angry serpents on the Gandhamadana mountain.)

(He, pierced by them and with blood flowing, like a broken elephant, held the intention for the destruction of the king, that flesh-eater. And he took the great power, capable of destroying even mountains.)
Pierced by them and bleeding like a wounded elephant, he resolved to destroy the king. The flesh-eater then seized a mighty weapon, capable of shattering mountains.
सम्प्रदीप्तां महोल्काभामशनीं मघवानिव । समुद्यच्छन्महाबाहुर्जिघांसुस्तनयं तव ॥६-८८-५॥
sampradīptāṃ maholkābhāmaśanīṃ maghavāniva । samudyacchanmahābāhurjighāṃsustanayaṃ tava ॥6-88-5॥

The mighty-armed hero, blazing like a great meteor and like Indra's thunderbolt, rose up with the intent to kill your son.
तामुद्यतामभिप्रेक्ष्य वङ्गानामधिपस्त्वरन् । कुञ्जरं गिरिसङ्काशं राक्षसं प्रत्यचोदयत् ॥६-८८-६॥
tāmudyatāmabhiprekṣya vaṅgānāmadhipastvaran । kuñjaraṃ girisaṅkāśaṃ rākṣasaṃ pratyacodayat ॥6-88-6॥

(Having seen her raised, the lord of the Vangas hastily urged the mountain-like elephant against the demon.)
The lord of the Vangas, upon seeing her rise, quickly directed the massive elephant towards the demon.
स नागप्रवरेणाजौ बलिना शीघ्रगामिना । यतो दुर्योधनरथस्तं मार्गं प्रत्यपद्यत ॥ रथं च वारयामास कुञ्जरेण सुतस्य ते ॥६-८८-७॥
sa nāgapravareṇājau balinā śīghragāminā । yato duryodhanarathastaṃ mārgaṃ pratyapadyata ॥ rathaṃ ca vārayāmāsa kuñjareṇa sutasya te ॥6-88-7॥

(He, by the excellent, strong, and swift-moving elephant in battle, followed the path where Duryodhana's chariot went. And the chariot was stopped by your son's elephant.)
In the battle, he, with the help of a strong and swift elephant, followed the path of Duryodhana's chariot. Your son's elephant then stopped the chariot.
मार्गमावारितं दृष्ट्वा राज्ञा वङ्गेन धीमता । घटोत्कचो महाराज क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः ॥ उद्यतां तां महाशक्तिं तस्मिंश्चिक्षेप वारणे ॥६-८८-८॥
mārgamāvāritaṃ dṛṣṭvā rājñā vaṅgena dhīmatā । ghaṭotkaco mahārāja krodhasaṃraktalocanaḥ ॥ udyatāṃ tāṃ mahāśaktiṃ tasmiṃścikṣepa vāraṇe ॥6-88-8॥

(Having seen the path blocked by the wise king Vanga, Ghatotkacha, O great king, with eyes reddened in anger, hurled that great power at the elephant.)
Upon observing the path obstructed by the wise King Vanga, Ghatotkacha, with eyes inflamed by rage, cast his mighty weapon at the elephant.
स तयाभिहतो राजंस्तेन बाहुविमुक्तया । सञ्जातरुधिरोत्पीडः पपात च ममार च ॥६-८८-९॥
sa tayābihato rājanstena bāhuvimuktayā । sañjātarudhirotpīḍaḥ papāta ca mamāra ca ॥6-88-9॥

(He, struck by her with the released arm, O king, with blood pressure emerging, fell and died.)
He was struck by her released arm, O king, causing blood to gush out, and he fell down dead.
पतत्यथ गजे चापि वङ्गानामीश्वरो बली । जवेन समभिद्रुत्य जगाम धरणीतलम् ॥६-८८-१०॥
patatyatha gaje cāpi vaṅgānāmīśvaro balī । javena samabhidrutya jagāma dharaṇītalam ॥6-88-10॥
[पतति (patati) - falls; अथ (atha) - then; गजे (gaje) - on the elephant; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वङ्गानाम् (vaṅgānām) - of the Vangas; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - lord; बली (balī) - strong; जवेना (javena) - with speed; समभिद्रुत्य (samabhidrutya) - having rushed; जगाम (jagāma) - went; धरणीतलम् (dharaṇītalam) - to the ground;]
(Then the strong lord of the Vangas, having rushed with speed, fell on the elephant and went to the ground.)

दुर्योधनोऽपि सम्प्रेक्ष्य पातितं वरवारणम् । प्रभग्नं च बलं दृष्ट्वा जगाम परमां व्यथाम् ॥६-८८-११॥
duryodhano'pi samprekṣya pātitaṃ varavāraṇam । prabhagnaṃ ca balaṃ dṛṣṭvā jagāma paramāṃ vyathām ॥6-88-11॥

(Duryodhana also, having seen the fallen excellent elephant and the broken army, went to extreme distress.)

क्षत्रधर्मं पुरस्कृत्य आत्मनश्चाभिमानिताम् । प्राप्तेऽपक्रमणे राजा तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥६-८८-१२॥
kṣatradharmaṃ puraskṛtya ātmanaścābhimānitām । prāpte'pakramaṇe rājā tasthau giririvācalaḥ ॥6-88-12॥
[क्षत्रधर्मम् (kṣatradharmam) - warrior's duty; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - having placed in front; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; च (ca) - and; अभिमानिताम् (abhimānitām) - pride; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - upon the arrival; अपक्रमणे (apakramaṇe) - of retreat; राजा (rājā) - the king; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; गिरिः (giriḥ) - mountain; इव (iva) - like; अचलः (acalaḥ) - immovable;]
(Having placed the warrior's duty and his own pride in front, upon the arrival of retreat, the king stood like an immovable mountain.)
The king, upholding the warrior's duty and his own pride, stood firm like an immovable mountain when the time to retreat arrived.
सन्धाय च शितं बाणं कालाग्निसमतेजसम् । मुमोच परमक्रुद्धस्तस्मिन्घोरे निशाचरे ॥६-८८-१३॥
sandhāya ca śitaṃ bāṇaṃ kālāgnisamatejasam । mumoca paramakruddhastasminghore niśācare ॥6-88-13॥

(Having fixed a sharp arrow, equal in radiance to the fire of dissolution, he released it, extremely angry, at that terrible night-wanderer.)
In a fit of extreme anger, he fixed a sharp arrow, blazing like the fire of dissolution, and released it at the dreadful night-wanderer.
तमापतन्तं सम्प्रेक्ष्य बाणमिन्द्राशनिप्रभम् । लाघवाद्वञ्चयामास महाकायो घटोत्कचः ॥६-८८-१४॥
tamāpatantaṃ samprekṣya bāṇamindrāśaniprabham । lāghavādvañcayāmāsa mahākāyo ghaṭotkacaḥ ॥6-88-14॥

(Having seen that approaching arrow, like Indra's thunderbolt, the great-bodied Ghatotkacha evaded it with agility.)
Ghatotkacha, with his massive form, skillfully dodged the oncoming arrow that shone like Indra's thunderbolt.
भूय एव ननादोग्रः क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः । त्रासयन्सर्वभूतानि युगान्ते जलदो यथा ॥६-८८-१५॥
bhūya eva nanādograḥ krodhasaṁraktalocanaḥ । trāsayansarvabhūtāni yugānte jalado yathā ॥6-88-15॥

(Again indeed, the fierce one roared, his eyes bloodshot with anger, terrifying all creatures like a cloud at the end of the age.)
Once more, the fierce one roared with eyes bloodshot in anger, frightening all beings like a storm cloud at the end of an era.
तं श्रुत्वा निनदं घोरं तस्य भीष्मस्य रक्षसः । आचार्यमुपसङ्गम्य भीष्मः शान्तनवोऽब्रवीत् ॥६-८८-१६॥
taṁ śrutvā ninadaṁ ghoraṁ tasya bhīṣmasya rakṣasaḥ । ācāryamupasaṅgamya bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo'bravīt ॥6-88-16॥
[तं (taṁ) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; निनदं (ninadam) - sound; घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; तस्य (tasya) - of that; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhishma; रक्षसः (rakṣasaḥ) - of the demon; आचार्यम् (ācāryam) - to the teacher; उपसङ्गम्य (upasaṅgamya) - approaching; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Shantanu; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Having heard that terrible sound of Bhishma's demon, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, approached the teacher and said:)

यथैष निनदो घोरः श्रूयते राक्षसेरितः । हैडिम्बो युध्यते नूनं राज्ञा दुर्योधनेन ह ॥६-८८-१७॥
yathaiṣa ninado ghoraḥ śrūyate rākṣaseritaḥ । haiḍimbo yudhyate nūnaṃ rājñā duryodhanena ha ॥6-88-17॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; निनदः (ninadaḥ) - sound; घोरः (ghoraḥ) - terrible; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; राक्षस (rākṣasa) - demon; इरितः (iritaḥ) - uttered; हैडिम्बः (haiḍimbaḥ) - Hidimba; युध्यते (yudhyate) - fights; नूनं (nūnaṃ) - surely; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; दुर्योधनेन (duryodhanena) - by Duryodhana; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(As this terrible sound is heard, uttered by the demon, surely Hidimba fights indeed with King Duryodhana.)
The terrible sound you hear is from the demon, indicating that Hidimba is surely fighting with King Duryodhana.
नैष शक्यो हि सङ्ग्रामे जेतुं भूतेन केनचित् । तत्र गच्छत भद्रं वो राजानं परिरक्षत ॥६-८८-१८॥
naiṣa śakyo hi saṅgrāme jetuṃ bhūtena kenacit । tatra gacchata bhadraṃ vo rājānaṃ parirakṣata ॥6-88-18॥
[नैष (naiṣa) - this; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; हि (hi) - indeed; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; भूतेन (bhūtena) - by any being; केनचित् (kenacit) - by anyone; तत्र (tatra) - there; गच्छत (gacchata) - go; भद्रम् (bhadram) - good; वः (vaḥ) - your; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; परिरक्षत (parirakṣata) - protect;]
(This cannot indeed be conquered in battle by any being. Go there, good sirs, protect your king.)
It is impossible for anyone to win this battle. Go there and protect your king. May good fortune be with you.
अभिद्रुतं महाभागं राक्षसेन दुरात्मना । एतद्धि परमं कृत्यं सर्वेषां नः परन्तपाः ॥६-८८-१९॥
abhidrutaṃ mahābhāgaṃ rākṣasena durātmanā । etaddhi paramaṃ kṛtyaṃ sarveṣāṃ naḥ parantapāḥ ॥6-88-19॥

(Attacked the illustrious one by the wicked demon. This indeed is the supreme duty of all our O scorcher of foes.)

Upon hearing the words of the grandsire, the great warriors quickly set out with great speed to the place where the Kauravas were.
द्रोणश्च सोमदत्तश्च बाह्लिकश्च जयद्रथः । कृपो भूरिश्रवाः शल्यश्चित्रसेनो विविंशतिः ॥६-८८-२१॥
