Pancharatra and Core: Drona, in his admiration for Duryodhana, grants him a boon, and Duryodhana asks for Yudhisthira's capture.

हन्त ते वर्णयिष्यामि सर्वं प्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान्। यथा स न्यपतद्द्रोणः सादितः पाण्डुसृञ्जयैः ॥७-११-१॥
hanta te varṇayiṣyāmi sarvaṃ pratyakṣadarśivān। yathā sa nyapataddroṇaḥ sāditaḥ pāṇḍusṛñjayaiḥ ॥7-11-1॥
[हन्त (hanta) - behold; ते (te) - to you; वर्णयिष्यामि (varṇayiṣyāmi) - I shall describe; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - everything; प्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान् (pratyakṣadarśivān) - as witnessed; यथा (yathā) - how; सः (saḥ) - he; न्यपतत् (nyapatat) - fell; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; सादितः (sāditaḥ) - struck down; पाण्डुसृञ्जयैः (pāṇḍusṛñjayaiḥ) - by the Pandavas and Srinjayas;]
(Behold, I shall describe everything to you as witnessed, how Droṇa fell, struck down by the Pandavas and Srinjayas.)
Behold, I will narrate to you everything as it was witnessed, how Droṇa was struck down by the Pandavas and Srinjayas.
सेनापतित्वं सम्प्राप्य भारद्वाजो महारथः। मध्ये सर्वस्य सैन्यस्य पुत्रं ते वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥७-११-२॥
senāpatitvaṃ samprāpya bhāradvājo mahārathaḥ। madhye sarvasya sainyasya putraṃ te vākyamabravīt ॥7-11-2॥

(Having obtained generalship, Bharadvaja, the great chariot-warrior, spoke your son’s speech in the midst of all the army.)
Bharadvaja, the great chariot-warrior, having attained the position of general, addressed your son in the midst of the entire army.
यत्कौरवाणामृषभादापगेयादनन्तरम्। सेनापत्येन मां राजन्नद्य सत्कृतवानसि ॥७-११-३॥
yatkauravāṇāmṛṣabhādāpageyādanantaram। senāpatyena māṃ rājannadya satkṛtavānasi ॥7-11-3॥

(After the descendant of the river, from the bull of the Kauravas, O king, today you have honored me by the general.)

सदृशं कर्मणस्तस्य फलं प्राप्नुहि पार्थिव। करोमि कामं कं तेऽद्य प्रवृणीष्व यमिच्छसि ॥७-११-४॥
sadṛśaṃ karmaṇastasya phalaṃ prāpnuhi pārthiva। karomi kāmaṃ kaṃ te'dya pravṛṇīṣva yamicchasi ॥7-11-4॥

(Obtain the appropriate fruit of his action, O prince. I do the desire which is yours today; choose whom you wish.)
O prince, receive the deserved outcome of his actions. Today, I fulfill your desire; choose whom you wish.
ततो दुर्योधनश्चिन्त्य कर्णदुःशासनादिभिः। तमथोवाच दुर्धर्षमाचार्यं जयतां वरम् ॥७-११-५॥
tato duryodhanaś cintya karṇaduḥśāsanādibhiḥ। tam athovāca durdharṣam ācāryaṃ jayatāṃ varam ॥7-11-5॥

ददासि चेद्वरं मह्यं जीवग्राहं युधिष्ठिरम्। गृहीत्वा रथिनां श्रेष्ठं मत्समीपमिहानय ॥७-११-६॥
dadāsi ced varaṃ mahyaṃ jīvagrāhaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। gṛhītvā rathināṃ śreṣṭhaṃ matsamīpamihānaya ॥7-11-6॥

ततः कुरूणामाचार्यः श्रुत्वा पुत्रस्य ते वचः। सेनां प्रहर्षयन्सर्वामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥७-११-७॥

(Then, the teacher of the Kurus, having heard your son's words, cheering all the army, spoke this speech.)

धन्यः कुन्तीसुतो राजा यस्य ग्रहणमिच्छसि। न वधार्थं सुदुर्धर्ष वरमद्य प्रयाचसि ॥७-११-८॥
dhanyaḥ kuntīsuto rājā yasya grahaṇamicchasi। na vadhārthaṃ sudurdharṣa varamadya prayācasi ॥7-11-8॥

(Fortunate is the son of Kunti, the king whose acceptance you desire. O difficult to conquer, you request a boon today not for killing.)
The son of Kunti, the king, is fortunate, as you seek his acceptance. O mighty one, today you ask for a boon not for the purpose of killing.
किमर्थं च नरव्याघ्र न वधं तस्य काङ्क्षसि। नाशंससि क्रियामेतां मत्तो दुर्योधन ध्रुवम् ॥७-११-९॥
kimarthaṃ ca naravyāghra na vadhaṃ tasya kāṅkṣasi। nāśaṃsasi kriyāmetāṃ matto duryodhana dhruvam ॥7-11-9॥
[किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what purpose; च (ca) - and; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; न (na) - not; वधम् (vadham) - killing; तस्य (tasya) - his; काङ्क्षसि (kāṅkṣasi) - you desire; न (na) - not; आशंससि (āśaṃsasi) - you wish; क्रियाम् (kriyām) - action; एताम् (etām) - this; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; दुर्योधन (duryodhana) - Duryodhana; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly;]
(For what purpose, O tiger among men, do you not desire his killing? You certainly do not wish this action from me, Duryodhana.)
O Duryodhana, why do you, a tiger among men, not wish for his death? Surely, you do not want this action from me.
आहो स्विद्धर्मपुत्रस्य द्वेष्टा तस्य न विद्यते। यदिच्छसि त्वं जीवन्तं कुलं रक्षसि चात्मनि ॥७-११-१०॥
āho svid dharmaputrasya dveṣṭā tasya na vidyate। yadicchasi tvaṃ jīvantaṃ kulaṃ rakṣasi cātmani ॥7-11-10॥
[आहो (āho) - indeed; स्वित् (svid) - whether; धर्मपुत्रस्य (dharmaputrasya) - of Dharmaputra; द्वेष्टा (dveṣṭā) - hater; तस्य (tasya) - of him; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; यत् (yat) - what; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; जीवन्तं (jīvantaṃ) - living; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; रक्षसि (rakṣasi) - you protect; च (ca) - and; आत्मनि (ātmani) - in yourself;]
(Indeed, whether there is no hater of Dharmaputra; what you desire, you protect the living family in yourself.)
Indeed, it seems there is no one who hates Dharmaputra; whatever you desire, you protect the living family within yourself.
अथ वा भरतश्रेष्ठ निर्जित्य युधि पाण्डवान्। राज्यांशं प्रतिदत्त्वा च सौभ्रात्रं कर्तुमिच्छसि ॥७-११-११॥
atha vā bharataśreṣṭha nirjitya yudhi pāṇḍavān। rājyāṃśaṃ pratidattvā ca saubhrātraṃ kartumicchasi ॥7-11-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; निर्जित्य (nirjitya) - having conquered; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pandavas; राज्यांशं (rājyāṃśaṃ) - a share of the kingdom; प्रतिदत्त्वा (pratidattvā) - having given back; च (ca) - and; सौभ्रात्रं (saubhrātraṃ) - brotherhood; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish;]
(Then, O best of the Bharatas, having conquered the Pandavas in battle, and having given back a share of the kingdom, you wish to establish brotherhood.)

धन्यः कुन्तीसुतो राजा सुजाता चास्य धीमतः। अजातशत्रुता सत्या तस्य यत्स्निह्यते भवान् ॥७-११-१२॥
dhanyaḥ kuntīsuto rājā sujātā cāsya dhīmataḥ। ajātaśatrutā satyā tasya yatsnihyate bhavān ॥7-11-12॥

(Fortunate is the son of Kunti, the king, well-born and wise. His freedom from enemies is true because you are loved by him.)

द्रोणेन त्वेवमुक्तस्य तव पुत्रस्य भारत। सहसा निःसृतो भावो योऽस्य नित्यं प्रवर्तते ॥७-११-१३॥

(By Drona, indeed, thus spoken, of your son's, O Bharata, suddenly emerged emotion which his always manifests.)
O Bharata, when your son was thus addressed by Drona, the emotion which always manifests in him suddenly emerged.
नाकारो गूहितुं शक्यो बृहस्पतिसमैरपि। तस्मात्तव सुतो राजन्प्रहृष्टो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥७-११-१४॥
nākāro gūhituṃ śakyo bṛhaspatisamairapi। tasmāttava suto rājanprahṛṣṭo vākyamabravīt ॥7-11-14॥
[न (na) - not; अकारः (akāraḥ) - action; गूहितुं (gūhituṃ) - to conceal; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; बृहस्पतिसमैः (bṛhaspatisamaiḥ) - by those equal to Brihaspati; अपि (api) - even; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; तव (tava) - your; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रहृष्टः (prahṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(The action cannot be concealed even by those equal to Brihaspati. Therefore, your son, O king, delightedly spoke these words.)

वधे कुन्तीसुतस्याजौ नाचार्य विजयो मम। हते युधिष्ठिरे पार्थो हन्यात्सर्वान्हि नो ध्रुवम् ॥७-११-१५॥

(In the killing of Kunti's son in battle, O teacher, there is no victory for me. If Yudhishthira is killed, Arjuna would certainly kill us all.)
O teacher, there is no victory for me in the killing of Kunti's son in battle. If Yudhishthira is killed, Arjuna would certainly kill us all.
न च शक्यो रणे सर्वैर्निहन्तुममरैरपि। य एव चैषां शेषः स्यात्स एवास्मान्न शेषयेत् ॥७-११-१६॥

(And not able in battle by all to kill by the immortals even. Who indeed of these remainder would be, he indeed us not would leave.)
Even the immortals cannot kill him in battle. Whoever remains of these, he would not leave us.
सत्यप्रतिज्ञे त्वानीते पुनर्द्यूतेन निर्जिते। पुनर्यास्यन्त्यरण्याय कौन्तेयास्तमनुव्रताः ॥७-११-१७॥
satyapratijñe tvānīte punardyūtena nirjite। punaryāsyantyaraṇyāya kaunteyāstamanuvratāḥ ॥7-11-17॥
[सत्यप्रतिज्ञे (satyapratijñe) - one who keeps promises; त्वा (tvā) - you; आनीते (ānīte) - brought back; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; द्यूतेन (dyūtena) - by gambling; निर्जिते (nirjite) - defeated; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; यास्यन्ति (yāsyanti) - will go; अरण्याय (araṇyāya) - to the forest; कौन्तेयाः (kaunteyāḥ) - sons of Kunti; तम् (tam) - him; अनुव्रताः (anuvratāḥ) - following;]
(The sons of Kunti, who keep promises, having been brought back and defeated again by gambling, will again go to the forest, following him.)
The sons of Kunti, true to their word, were brought back and once more defeated in gambling. They will return to the forest, following him.
सोऽयं मम जयो व्यक्तं दीर्घकालं भविष्यति। अतो न वधमिच्छामि धर्मराजस्य कर्हिचित् ॥७-११-१८॥
so'yaṁ mama jayo vyaktaṁ dīrghakālaṁ bhaviṣyati। ato na vadhamicchāmi dharmarājasya karhicit ॥7-11-18॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; मम (mama) - my; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; व्यक्तम् (vyaktam) - manifest; दीर्घकालम् (dīrghakālam) - long time; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; न (na) - not; वधम् (vadham) - killing; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmaraja; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - ever;]
(He, this victory of mine will manifest for a long time. Therefore, I do not desire the killing of Dharmaraja ever.)
This victory of mine will be evident for a long time. Therefore, I never wish for the death of Dharmaraja.
तस्य जिह्ममभिप्रायं ज्ञात्वा द्रोणोऽर्थतत्त्ववित्। तं वरं सान्तरं तस्मै ददौ सञ्चिन्त्य बुद्धिमान् ॥७-११-१९॥
tasya jihmamabhiprāyaṃ jñātvā droṇo'rthatattvavit। taṃ varaṃ sāntaraṃ tasmai dadau sañcintya buddhimān ॥7-11-19॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; जिह्ममभिप्रायं (jihmamabhiprāyaṃ) - crooked intention; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; अर्थतत्त्ववित् (arthatattvavit) - knower of the essence of wealth; तम् (tam) - that; वरम् (varam) - boon; सान्तरम् (sāntaram) - with a hidden meaning; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; ददौ (dadau) - gave; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; बुद्धिमान् (buddhimān) - wise;]
(Having known his crooked intention, Drona, the knower of the essence of wealth, gave that boon with a hidden meaning to him, having considered wisely.)
Understanding his deceitful intention, the wise Drona, who understood the essence of wealth, thoughtfully granted him that boon with a hidden meaning.

na cedyudhiṣṭhiraṃ vīra pālayedarjuno yudhi। manyasva pāṇḍavaṃ jyeṣṭhamānītaṃ vaśamātmanaḥ ॥7-11-20॥
[न (na) - not; चेत् (cet) - if; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; वीर (vīra) - hero; पालयेत् (pālayet) - protect; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; मन्यस्व (manyasva) - consider; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - Pandava; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - eldest; आनीतम् (ānītam) - brought; वशम् (vaśam) - control; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of self;]
(If Arjuna, the hero, does not protect Yudhishthira in battle, consider the eldest Pandava brought under control of the self.)
If Arjuna, the hero, fails to protect Yudhishthira in battle, then consider the eldest Pandava as having been brought under one's control.
न हि पार्थो रणे शक्यः सेन्द्रैर्देवासुरैरपि। प्रत्युद्यातुमतस्तात नैतदामर्षयाम्यहम् ॥७-११-२१॥
na hi pārtho raṇe śakyaḥ sendrairdevāsurairapi। pratyudyātumatastāta naitadāmarṣayāmyaham ॥7-11-21॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Arjuna; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - capable; सेन्द्रैः (sendrair) - with Indra; देवासुरैः (devāsuraiḥ) - by gods and demons; अपि (api) - even; प्रत्युद्यातुम् (pratyudyātum) - to oppose; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; तात (tāta) - dear; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; आमर्षयामि (āmarṣayāmi) - tolerate; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Indeed, Arjuna is not capable of being opposed in battle even by gods and demons with Indra; therefore, dear, I do not tolerate this.)
Arjuna is invincible in battle, even against gods and demons led by Indra; hence, dear one, I cannot accept this.
असंशयं स शिष्यो मे मत्पूर्वश्चास्त्रकर्मणि। तरुणः कीर्तियुक्तश्च एकायनगतश्च सः ॥७-११-२२॥

स चापक्रम्यतां युद्धाद्येनोपायेन शक्यते। अपनीते ततः पार्थे धर्मराजो जितस्त्वया ॥७-११-२४॥
sa cāpakramyatāṃ yuddhādyenopāyena śakyate। apanīte tataḥ pārthe dharmarājo jitastvayā ॥7-11-24॥

अहं गृहीत्वा राजानं सत्यधर्मपरायणम्। आनयिष्यामि ते राजन्वशमद्य न संशयः ॥७-११-२६॥

यदि स्थास्यति सङ्ग्रामे मुहूर्तमपि मेऽग्रतः। अपनीते नरव्याघ्रे कुन्तीपुत्रे धनञ्जये ॥७-११-२७॥
