सर्वे विध्वस्तकवचास्तावका युधि निर्जिताः। रजस्वला भृशोद्विग्ना वीक्षमाणा दिशो दश ॥७-३२-२॥
sarve vidhvastakavacāstāvakā yudhi nirjitāḥ। rajasvalā bhṛśodvignā vīkṣamāṇā diśo daśa ॥7-32-2॥

(All your men with shattered armors, defeated in battle, covered in dust, greatly agitated, looking in all ten directions.)
All your soldiers, their armors shattered, were defeated in battle. Covered in dust and greatly agitated, they looked around in all ten directions.
अवहारं ततः कृत्वा भारद्वाजस्य संमते। लब्धलक्ष्यैः परैर्दीना भृशावहसिता रणे ॥७-३२-३॥
avahāraṃ tataḥ kṛtvā bhāradvājasya saṃmate। labdhalakṣyaiḥ parairdīnā bhṛśāvahasitā raṇe ॥7-32-3॥

(Then, having made the withdrawal with the consent of Bharadvaja, they were greatly mocked in battle by others who had achieved their aim, being distressed.)

श्लाघमानेषु भूतेषु फल्गुनस्यामितान्गुणान्। केशवस्य च सौहार्दे कीर्त्यमानेऽर्जुनं प्रति ॥ अभिशस्ता इवाभूवन्ध्यानमूकत्वमास्थिताः ॥७-३२-४॥

ततः प्रभातसमये द्रोणं दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत्। प्रणयादभिमानाच्च द्विषद्वृद्ध्या च दुर्मनाः ॥ शृण्वतां सर्वभूतानां संरब्धो वाक्यकोविदः ॥७-३२-५॥

(Then, at dawn, Duryodhana, distressed by the growth of the enemy, spoke to Droṇa out of affection and pride, agitated and skilled in speech, in the hearing of all beings.)
At dawn, Duryodhana, troubled by the increasing strength of his enemies, addressed Droṇa with a mix of affection and pride, speaking skillfully in the presence of all creatures.
नूनं वयं वध्यपक्षे भवतो ब्रह्मवित्तम। तथा हि नाग्रहीः प्राप्तं समीपेऽद्य युधिष्ठिरम् ॥७-३२-६॥
nūnaṃ vayaṃ vadhyapakṣe bhavato brahmavittama। tathā hi nāgrahīḥ prāptaṃ samīpe'dya yudhiṣṭhiram ॥7-32-6॥

(Certainly, we are in the position of the condemned, O knower of Brahman, for indeed you have not taken Yudhishthira, who is near today.)

इच्छतस्ते न मुच्येत चक्षुःप्राप्तो रणे रिपुः। जिघृक्षतो रक्ष्यमाणः सामरैरपि पाण्डवैः ॥७-३२-७॥
icchatas te na mucyeta cakṣuḥprāpto raṇe ripuḥ। jighṛkṣato rakṣyamāṇaḥ sāmarair api pāṇḍavaiḥ ॥7-32-7॥
[इच्छतः (icchataḥ) - desiring; ते (te) - your; न (na) - not; मुच्येत (mucyeta) - would be released; चक्षुःप्राप्तः (cakṣuḥprāptaḥ) - having reached the sight; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; रिपुः (ripuḥ) - enemy; जिघृक्षतः (jighṛkṣataḥ) - desiring to seize; रक्ष्यमाणः (rakṣyamāṇaḥ) - being protected; सामरैः (sāmaraiḥ) - with warriors; अपि (api) - even; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pandavas;]
(Desiring, your enemy, having reached the sight in battle, would not be released, even being protected by the Pandavas with warriors desiring to seize.)
Your enemy, once spotted in battle, would not escape, even if protected by the Pandavas and their warriors.
वरं दत्त्वा मम प्रीतः पश्चाद्विकृतवानसि। आशाभङ्गं न कुर्वन्ति भक्तस्यार्याः कथञ्चन ॥७-३२-८॥
varaṁ dattvā mama prītaḥ paścādvikṛtavānasi। āśābhaṅgaṁ na kurvanti bhaktasyāryāḥ kathañcana ॥7-32-8॥
[वरम् (varam) - boon; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; मम (mama) - my; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; विकृतवान् (vikṛtavān) - changed; असि (asi) - you are; आशाभङ्गम् (āśābhaṅgam) - disappointment; न (na) - not; कुर्वन्ति (kurvanti) - do; भक्तस्य (bhaktasya) - of a devotee; आर्याः (āryāḥ) - noble ones; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
(Having given a boon, you are pleased and afterwards changed. Noble ones do not cause disappointment to a devotee in any way.)
After granting a boon and being pleased, you have changed your stance. Noble ones never disappoint a devotee in any manner.
ततोऽप्रीतस्तथोक्तः स भारद्वाजोऽब्रवीन्नृपम्। नार्हसे मान्यथा ज्ञातुं घटमानं तव प्रिये ॥७-३२-९॥
tato'prītastathoktaḥ sa bhāradvājo'bravīnnṛpam। nārhase mānyathā jñātuṃ ghaṭamānaṃ tava priye ॥7-32-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अप्रीतः (aprītaḥ) - displeased; तथा (tathā) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; सः (saḥ) - he; भारद्वाजः (bhāradvājaḥ) - Bharadvaja; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; नृपम् (nṛpam) - to the king; न (na) - not; अर्हसे (arhase) - you deserve; मा (mā) - do not; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; घटमानम् (ghaṭamānam) - happening; तव (tava) - your; प्रिये (priye) - dear;]
(Then displeased, thus spoken, Bharadvaja said to the king: "You do not deserve to know otherwise what is happening, dear.")
Then, displeased, Bharadvaja said to the king: "You should not misunderstand what is happening, dear."
ससुरासुरगन्धर्वाः सयक्षोरगराक्षसाः। नालं लोका रणे जेतुं पाल्यमानं किरीटिना ॥७-३२-१०॥
sasurāsuragandharvāḥ sayakṣoragarākṣasāḥ। nālaṃ lokā raṇe jetuṃ pālyamānaṃ kirīṭinā ॥7-32-10॥
[ससुरासुरगन्धर्वाः (sasurāsuragandharvāḥ) - with-gods-demons-gandharvas; सयक्षोरगराक्षसाः (sayakṣoragarākṣasāḥ) - with-yakṣas-serpents-rākṣasas; न (na) - not; अलम् (alam) - capable; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; रणे (raṇe) - in-battle; जेतुम् (jetum) - to-conquer; पाल्यमानम् (pālyamānam) - protected; किरीटिना (kirīṭinā) - by-Kiriti;]
(With gods, demons, and gandharvas, with yakṣas, serpents, and rākṣasas, the worlds are not capable of conquering in battle, being protected by Kiriti.)
The worlds, even with the support of gods, demons, gandharvas, yakṣas, serpents, and rākṣasas, cannot conquer in battle when protected by Arjuna (Kiriti).
विश्वसृग्यत्र गोविन्दः पृतनारिस्तहार्जुनः। तत्र कस्य बलं क्रामेदन्यत्र त्र्यम्बकात्प्रभोः ॥७-३२-११॥
viśvasṛgyatra govindaḥ pṛtanāristahārjunaḥ। tatra kasya balaṃ krāmedanyatra tryambakātprabhoḥ ॥7-32-11॥
[विश्वसृग् (viśvasṛg) - creator of the universe; यत्र (yatra) - where; गोविन्दः (govindaḥ) - Govinda; पृतनारिः (pṛtanāriḥ) - enemy of the army; तहा (tahā) - also; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तत्र (tatra) - there; कस्य (kasya) - whose; बलं (balaṃ) - strength; क्रामेत् (krāmet) - would surpass; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; त्र्यम्बकात् (tryambakāt) - from Tryambaka; प्रभोः (prabhoḥ) - of the lord;]
(Where Govinda, the creator of the universe, and Arjuna, the enemy of the army, are present, whose strength would surpass that of the lord Tryambaka elsewhere?)
In the presence of Govinda, the creator of the universe, and Arjuna, the formidable warrior, who could possibly have strength surpassing that of Lord Tryambaka elsewhere?
सत्यं तु ते ब्रवीम्यद्य नैतज्जात्वन्यथा भवेत्। अद्यैषां प्रवरं वीरं पातयिष्ये महारथम् ॥७-३२-१२॥
satyaṁ tu te bravīmyadya naitajjātvanyathā bhavet। adyaiṣāṁ pravaraṁ vīraṁ pātayiṣye mahāratham ॥7-32-12॥
[सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truth; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - to you; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; अद्य (adya) - today; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; जातु (jātu) - ever; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; भवेत् (bhavet) - will be; अद्य (adya) - today; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; प्रवरम् (pravaram) - the best; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; पातयिष्ये (pātayiṣye) - I will bring down; महारथम् (mahāratham) - great chariot-warrior;]
(But I speak the truth to you today, this will never be otherwise. Today, I will bring down the best hero, the great chariot-warrior, of these.)
"I assure you truthfully today, this will never be otherwise. Today, I shall bring down the greatest hero among them, the mighty chariot-warrior."
तं च व्यूहं विधास्यामि योऽभेद्यस्त्रिदशैरपि। योगेन केनचिद्राजन्नर्जुनस्त्वपनीयताम् ॥७-३२-१३॥
taṁ ca vyūhaṁ vidhāsyāmi yo'bhedyastridaśairapi। yogena kenacidrājannarjunastvapanīyatām ॥7-32-13॥
[तं (taṁ) - that; च (ca) - and; व्यूहं (vyūhaṁ) - formation; विधास्यामि (vidhāsyāmi) - I will arrange; यः (yaḥ) - which; अभेद्यः (abhedyaḥ) - impenetrable; त्रिदशैः (tridaśaiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; योगेन (yogena) - by means; केनचित् (kenacit) - some; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; त्व (tva) - you; अपनीयताम् (apanīyatām) - should be removed;]
(And I will arrange that formation which is impenetrable even by the gods. By some means, O king, Arjuna should be removed.)
I will create a formation that even the gods cannot penetrate. O king, find a way to remove Arjuna.
न ह्यज्ञातमसाध्यं वा तस्य सङ्ख्येऽस्ति किञ्चन। तेन ह्युपात्तं बलवत्सर्वज्ञानमितस्ततः ॥७-३२-१४॥
na hy ajñātam asādhyaṃ vā tasya saṅkhye 'sti kiñcana। tena hy upāttaṃ balavat sarvajñanam itas tataḥ ॥7-32-14॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अज्ञातम् (ajñātam) - unknown; असाध्यम् (asādhyaṃ) - impossible; वा (vā) - or; तस्य (tasya) - his; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; अस्ति (asti) - there is; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; तेन (tena) - by him; हि (hi) - indeed; उपात्तम् (upāttaṃ) - obtained; बलवत् (balavat) - powerful; सर्वज्ञानम् (sarvajñanam) - all knowledge; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; ततः (tataḥ) - from there;]
(Indeed, there is nothing unknown or impossible for him in battle. By him, powerful all knowledge is obtained from here and there.)
In battle, there is nothing unknown or impossible for him. He possesses powerful knowledge from all directions.
द्रोणेन व्याहृते त्वेवं संशप्तकगणाः पुनः। आह्वयन्नर्जुनं सङ्ख्ये दक्षिणामभितो दिशम् ॥७-३२-१५॥
droṇena vyāhṛte tvevaṃ saṃśaptakagaṇāḥ punaḥ। āhvayannarjunaṃ saṅkhye dakṣiṇāmabhito diśam ॥7-32-15॥
[द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Drona; व्याहृते (vyāhṛte) - spoken; तु (tu) - but; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; संशप्तकगणाः (saṃśaptakagaṇāḥ) - the group of Saṃśaptakas; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आह्वयन् (āhvayan) - challenging; अर्जुनं (arjunaṃ) - Arjuna; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - southern; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - on all sides; दिशम् (diśam) - direction;]
(But when spoken thus by Drona, the group of Saṃśaptakas again challenged Arjuna in battle on all sides in the southern direction.)
Upon hearing Drona's words, the Saṃśaptaka warriors once more challenged Arjuna, surrounding him from all sides in the southern direction of the battlefield.
तत्रार्जुनस्याथ परैः सार्धं समभवद्रणः। तादृशो यादृशो नान्यः श्रुतो दृष्टोऽपि वा क्वचित् ॥७-३२-१६॥
tatrārjunasyaatha paraiḥ sārdhaṃ samabhavadraṇaḥ। tādṛśo yādṛśo nānyaḥ śruto dṛṣṭo'pi vā kvacit ॥7-32-16॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; अथ (atha) - then; परैः (paraiḥ) - with others; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together; समभवत् (samabhavat) - occurred; रणः (raṇaḥ) - battle; तादृशः (tādṛśaḥ) - such; यादृशः (yādṛśaḥ) - as; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - heard; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere;]
(There then occurred a battle of Arjuna with others, such as none other has been heard or seen anywhere.)
Then there was a battle between Arjuna and others, the likes of which had never been heard or seen anywhere.
ततो द्रोणेन विहितो राजन्व्यूहो व्यरोचत। चरन्मध्यंदिने सूर्यः प्रतपन्निव दुर्दृशः ॥७-३२-१७॥
tato droṇena vihito rājanvyūho vyarocata। caranmadhyaṃdine sūryaḥ pratapanniva durdṛśaḥ ॥7-32-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Drona; विहितः (vihitaḥ) - arranged; राजन् (rājan) - O king; व्यूहः (vyūhaḥ) - formation; व्यरोचत (vyarocata) - shone; चरन् (caran) - moving; मध्यंदिने (madhyaṃdine) - at midday; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - sun; प्रतपन् (pratapan) - blazing; इव (iva) - like; दुर्दृशः (durdṛśaḥ) - difficult to behold;]
(Then the formation arranged by Drona, O king, shone like the blazing sun moving at midday, difficult to behold.)

तं चाभिमन्युर्वचनात्पितुर्ज्येष्ठस्य भारत। बिभेद दुर्भिदं सङ्ख्ये चक्रव्यूहमनेकधा ॥७-३२-१८॥
taṃ cābhimanyurvacanātpiturjyeṣṭhasya bhārata। bibheda durbhidaṃ saṅkhye cakravyūhamanekadhā ॥7-32-18॥
[तं (taṃ) - that; च (ca) - and; अभिमन्युः (abhimanyuḥ) - Abhimanyu; वचनात् (vacanāt) - from the words; पितुः (pituḥ) - of father; ज्येष्ठस्य (jyeṣṭhasya) - eldest; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; बिभेद (bibheda) - pierced; दुर्भिदं (durbhidaṃ) - difficult to penetrate; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; चक्रव्यूहम् (cakravyūham) - the military formation; अनेकधा (anekadhā) - in many ways;]
(And Abhimanyu, from the words of his eldest father, O Bharata, pierced the difficult-to-penetrate military formation in battle in many ways.)
O Bharata, Abhimanyu, following the instructions of his eldest father, skillfully penetrated the formidable military formation in battle in various ways.
स कृत्वा दुष्करं कर्म हत्वा वीरान्सहस्रशः। षट्सु वीरेषु संसक्तो दौःशासनिवशं गतः ॥७-३२-१९॥
sa kṛtvā duṣkaraṃ karma hatvā vīrānsahasraśaḥ। ṣaṭsu vīreṣu saṃsakto dauḥśāsanivaśaṃ gataḥ ॥7-32-19॥
[स (sa) - he; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; दुष्करं (duṣkaraṃ) - difficult; कर्म (karma) - deed; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; वीरान् (vīrān) - heroes; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; षट्सु (ṣaṭsu) - among six; वीरेषु (vīreṣu) - heroes; संसक्तः (saṃsaktaḥ) - engaged; दौःशासनिवशं (dauḥśāsanivaśaṃ) - under the control of Duhshasana; गतः (gataḥ) - went;]
(He, having done a difficult deed, having slain heroes by thousands, engaged among six heroes, went under the control of Duhshasana.)
He performed a challenging task by killing thousands of heroes and, while engaged among six heroes, fell under the control of Duhshasana.
वयं परमसंहृष्टाः पाण्डवाः शोककर्शिताः। सौभद्रे निहते राजन्नवहारमकुर्वत ॥७-३२-२०॥
vayaṁ paramasaṁhṛṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ śokakarśitāḥ। saubhadre nihate rājannavahārakurvata ॥7-32-20॥

putraṁ puruṣasiṁhasya sañjayāprāptayauvanam। raṇe vinihataṁ śrutvā bhṛśaṁ me dīryate manaḥ ॥7-32-21॥
[पुत्रम् (putram) - son; पुरुषसिंहस्य (puruṣasiṁhasya) - of the lion among men; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sanjaya; प्राप्त (prāpta) - attained; यौवनम् (yauvanam) - youth; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; विनिहतम् (vinihatam) - slain; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly; मे (me) - my; दीर्यते (dīryate) - is distressed; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]

yanmāṁ pṛcchasi rājendra saubhadrasya nipātanam। tatte kārtsnyena vakṣyāmi śṛṇu rājansamāhitaḥ ॥ vikrīḍitaṁ kumāreṇa yathānīkaṁ bibhitsatā ॥7-32-25॥

दावाग्न्यभिपरीतानां भूरिगुल्मतृणद्रुमे। वनौकसामिवारण्ये त्वदीयानामभूद्भयम् ॥७-३२-२६॥
dāvāgnyabhiparītānāṃ bhūrigulmatṛṇadrume। vanaukasāmivāraṇye tvadīyānāmabhūdbhayam ॥7-32-26॥
[दावाग्नि (dāvāgni) - forest fire; अभिपरीतानां (abhiparītānāṃ) - surrounded; भूरि (bhūri) - abundant; गुल्म (gulma) - bushes; तृण (tṛṇa) - grass; द्रुमे (drume) - trees; वनौकसाम् (vanaukasām) - forest dwellers; इव (iva) - like; अरण्ये (araṇye) - in the forest; त्वदीयानाम् (tvadīyānām) - your people; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(In the forest, surrounded by forest fire, with abundant bushes, grass, and trees, fear befell your people like it does to forest dwellers.)
