हन्त ते सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि सर्वं प्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान्। शुश्रूषस्व स्थिरो भूत्वा तव ह्यपनयो महान् ॥७-६२-१॥
hanta te sampravakṣyāmi sarvaṃ pratyakṣadarśivān। śuśrūṣasva sthiro bhūtvā tava hyapanayo mahān ॥7-62-1॥
[हन्त (hanta) - alas; ते (te) - to you; सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि (sampravakṣyāmi) - I shall explain; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - everything; प्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान् (pratyakṣadarśivān) - one who has seen directly; शुश्रूषस्व (śuśrūṣasva) - listen; स्थिरः (sthiraḥ) - steady; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; तव (tava) - your; हि (hi) - indeed; अपनयः (apanayaḥ) - removal; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(Alas, I shall explain everything to you, one who has seen directly. Listen, having become steady, for your removal is indeed great.)
"Alas, I will explain everything to you, who has directly witnessed it. Listen attentively and remain steady, for your downfall is indeed significant."
गतोदके सेतुबन्धो यादृक्तादृगयं तव। विलापो निष्फलो राजन्मा शुचो भरतर्षभ ॥७-६२-२॥
gatodake setubandho yādṛktādṛgayaṃ tava। vilāpo niṣphalo rājanmā śuco bharatarṣabha ॥7-62-2॥
[गतोदके (gatodake) - when the water has gone; सेतुबन्धः (setubandhaḥ) - a bridge; यादृक् (yādṛk) - as; तादृक् (tādṛk) - so; अयम् (ayam) - this; तव (tava) - your; विलापः (vilāpaḥ) - lamentation; निष्फलः (niṣphalaḥ) - fruitless; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(When the water has gone, a bridge is as it is; your lamentation is fruitless, O king, do not grieve, O best of the Bharatas.)
Just as a bridge is useless when the water has dried up, your lamentation is in vain, O king. Do not grieve, O best of the Bharatas.
अनतिक्रमणीयोऽयं कृतान्तस्याद्भुतो विधिः। मा शुचो भरतश्रेष्ठ दिष्टमेतत्पुरातनम् ॥७-६२-३॥
anatikramaṇīyo'yaṃ kṛtāntasyādbhuto vidhiḥ। mā śuco bharataśreṣṭha diṣṭametatpurātanam ॥7-62-3॥
[अनतिक्रमणीयः (anatikramaṇīyaḥ) - not to be transgressed; अयम् (ayam) - this; कृतान्तस्य (kṛtāntasya) - of fate; अद्भुतः (adbhutaḥ) - wonderful; विधिः (vidhiḥ) - arrangement; मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of Bharatas; दिष्टम् (diṣṭam) - ordained; एतत् (etat) - this; पुरातनम् (purātanam) - ancient;]
(This wonderful arrangement of fate is not to be transgressed. Do not grieve, O best of Bharatas; this is the ancient ordinance.)
This remarkable decree of fate is unchangeable. Do not mourn, O noble Bharata; this has been destined since ancient times.
यदि हि त्वं पुरा द्यूतात्कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम्। निवर्तयेथाः पुत्रांश्च न त्वां व्यसनमाव्रजेत् ॥७-६२-४॥
yadi hi tvaṃ purā dyūtātkuntīputraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। nivartayethāḥ putrāṃśca na tvāṃ vyasanamāvrajet ॥7-62-4॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पुरा (purā) - before; द्यूतात् (dyūtāt) - from gambling; कुन्तीपुत्रं (kuntīputram) - Kunti's son; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; निवर्तयेथाः (nivartayethāḥ) - had restrained; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; त्वां (tvām) - you; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - calamity; आव्रजेत् (āvrajet) - would have befallen;]
(If indeed you had restrained Kunti's son Yudhishthira from gambling before, calamity would not have befallen you and your sons.)
If you had stopped Yudhishthira, Kunti's son, from gambling earlier, you and your sons would not have faced this calamity.
युद्धकाले पुनः प्राप्ते तदैव भवता यदि। निवर्तिताः स्युः संरब्धा न त्वां व्यसनमाव्रजेत् ॥७-६२-५॥
yuddhakāle punaḥ prāpte tadaiva bhavatā yadi। nivartitāḥ syuḥ saṁrabdhā na tvāṁ vyasanamāvrajet ॥7-62-5॥
[युद्धकाले (yuddhakāle) - in the time of war; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - having arrived; तदा (tadā) - then; एव (eva) - indeed; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; यदि (yadi) - if; निवर्तिताः (nivartitāḥ) - turned back; स्युः (syuḥ) - would be; संरब्धाः (saṁrabdhāḥ) - excited; न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - calamity; आव्रजेत् (āvrajet) - would befall;]
(In the time of war, if indeed by you, having arrived again, they would be turned back, excited, calamity would not befall you.)
If, at the time of war, they are turned back by you upon arrival, then no calamity would befall you.
दुर्योधनं चाविधेयं बध्नीतेति पुरा यदि। कुरूनचोदयिष्यस्त्वं न त्वां व्यसनमाव्रजेत् ॥७-६२-६॥
duryodhanaṁ cāvidheyaṁ badhnīteti purā yadi। kurūnacodayiṣyastvaṁ na tvāṁ vyasanamāvrajet ॥7-62-6॥
[दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; च (ca) - and; अविधेयम् (avidheyam) - unsubmissive; बध्नीत (badhnīta) - binds; इति (iti) - thus; पुरा (purā) - before; यदि (yadi) - if; कुरून् (kurūn) - Kurus; अचोदयिष्यः (acodayiṣyaḥ) - would have urged; त्वम् (tvam) - you; न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - calamity; आव्रजेत् (āvrajet) - would have befallen;]
(If you had urged the Kurus before, Duryodhana, the unsubmissive, would have been bound, and calamity would not have befallen you thus.)
If you had advised the Kurus earlier, Duryodhana, who is difficult to control, would have been restrained, and you would not have faced this disaster.
तत्ते बुद्धिव्यभीचारमुपलप्स्यन्ति पाण्डवाः। पाञ्चाला वृष्णयः सर्वे ये चान्येऽपि महाजनाः ॥७-६२-७॥
tatte buddhivyabhīcāramupalapsyanti pāṇḍavāḥ। pāñcālā vṛṣṇayaḥ sarve ye cānye'pi mahājanāḥ ॥7-62-7॥
[तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - your; बुद्धि (buddhi) - intellect; व्यभीचारम् (vyabhīcāram) - deviation; उपलप्स्यन्ति (upalapsyanti) - will perceive; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pāṇḍavas; पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - Pāñcālas; वृष्णयः (vṛṣṇayaḥ) - Vṛṣṇis; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; अपि (api) - also; महाजनाः (mahājanāḥ) - great people;]
(That deviation of your intellect will be perceived by the Pāṇḍavas, the Pāñcālas, all the Vṛṣṇis, and other great people.)
Your deviation in judgment will be noticed by the Pāṇḍavas, the Pāñcālas, all the Vṛṣṇis, and other notable individuals.
स कृत्वा पितृकर्म त्वं पुत्रं संस्थाप्य सत्पथे। वर्तेथा यदि धर्मेण न त्वां व्यसनमाव्रजेत् ॥७-६२-८॥
sa kṛtvā pitṛkarma tvaṃ putraṃ saṃsthāpya satpathe। vartethā yadi dharmeṇa na tvāṃ vyasanamāvrajet ॥7-62-8॥
[स (sa) - he; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; पितृकर्म (pitṛkarma) - ancestral rites; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; संस्थाप्य (saṃsthāpya) - having established; सत्पथे (satpathe) - on the right path; वर्तेथा (vartethā) - may you proceed; यदि (yadi) - if; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - with righteousness; न (na) - not; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - calamity; आव्रजेत् (āvrajet) - may befall;]
(He, having performed the ancestral rites, you, having established your son on the right path, may proceed with righteousness, if no calamity befalls you.)
After performing the ancestral rites and establishing your son on the right path, may you proceed with righteousness, ensuring that no calamity befalls you.
त्वं तु प्राज्ञतमो लोके हित्वा धर्मं सनातनम्। दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेश्चान्वगा मतम् ॥७-६२-९॥
tvaṁ tu prājñatamo loke hitvā dharmaṁ sanātanam। duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneścānvagā matam ॥7-62-9॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; तु (tu) - but; प्राज्ञतमः (prājñatamaḥ) - wisest; लोके (loke) - in the world; हित्वा (hitvā) - abandoning; धर्मं (dharmaṁ) - dharma; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal; दुर्योधनस्य (duryodhanasya) - of Duryodhana; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karna; शकुनेः (śakuneḥ) - of Shakuni; च (ca) - and; अन्वगा (anvagā) - followed; मतम् (matam) - opinion;]
(You, the wisest in the world, abandoning the eternal dharma, followed the opinion of Duryodhana, Karna, and Shakuni.)
You, who are considered the wisest in the world, have forsaken the eternal dharma and chosen to follow the counsel of Duryodhana, Karna, and Shakuni.
तत्ते विलपितं सर्वं मया राजन्निशामितम्। अर्थे निविशमानस्य विषमिश्रं यथा मधु ॥७-६२-१०॥
tatte vilapitaṁ sarvaṁ mayā rājanniśāmitam। arthe niviśamānasya viṣamiśraṁ yathā madhu ॥7-62-10॥
[तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - your; विलपितम् (vilapitam) - lamentation; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; मया (mayā) - by me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; निशामितम् (niśāmitam) - observed; अर्थे (arthe) - in the matter; निविशमानस्य (niviśamānasya) - of one who is entering; विषमिश्रम् (viṣamiśram) - mixed with poison; यथा (yathā) - like; मधु (madhu) - honey;]
(That lamentation of yours, O king, was observed by me, like honey mixed with poison in the matter of one who is entering.)
O king, I observed all your lamentation, which was like honey mixed with poison for one who is entering into the matter.
न तथा मन्यते कृष्णो राजानं पाण्डवं पुरा। न भीष्मं नैव च द्रोणं यथा त्वां मन्यते नृप ॥७-६२-११॥
na tathā manyate kṛṣṇo rājānaṃ pāṇḍavaṃ purā। na bhīṣmaṃ naiva ca droṇaṃ yathā tvāṃ manyate nṛpa ॥7-62-11॥
[न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - thus; मन्यते (manyate) - considers; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Krishna; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - Pandava; पुरा (purā) - formerly; न (na) - not; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhishma; नैव (naiva) - nor; च (ca) - and; द्रोणम् (droṇam) - Drona; यथा (yathā) - as; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; मन्यते (manyate) - considers; नृप (nṛpa) - king;]
(Krishna does not consider the Pandava king as he considers you, nor Bhishma, nor Drona, O king.)
Krishna holds you in higher regard than the Pandava king, Bhishma, or Drona, O king.
व्यजानत यदा तु त्वां राजधर्मादधश्च्युतम्। तदा प्रभृति कृष्णस्त्वां न तथा बहु मन्यते ॥७-६२-१२॥
vyajānata yadā tu tvāṃ rājadharmādadhaścyutam। tadā prabhṛti kṛṣṇastvāṃ na tathā bahu manyate ॥7-62-12॥
[व्यजानत (vyajānata) - knew; यदा (yadā) - when; तु (tu) - but; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; राजधर्मात् (rājadharmāt) - from royal duty; अधः (adhaḥ) - down; च्युतम् (cyutam) - fallen; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - since; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Krishna; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so much; बहु (bahu) - much; मन्यते (manyate) - respects;]
(When he knew that you had fallen down from royal duty, since then Krishna does not respect you so much.)
When Krishna realized that you had deviated from your royal duties, he has not held you in high regard since then.
परुषाण्युच्यमानांश्च यथा पार्थानुपेक्षसे। तस्यानुबन्धः प्राप्तस्त्वां पुत्राणां राज्यकामुकम् ॥७-६२-१३॥
paruṣāṇyucyamānāṃśca yathā pārthānupekṣase। tasyānubandhaḥ prāptastvāṃ putrāṇāṃ rājyakāmukam ॥7-62-13॥
[परुषाणि (paruṣāṇi) - harsh words; उच्यमानान् (ucyamānān) - being spoken; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - as; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pritha; अनुपेक्षसे (anupekṣase) - you ignore; तस्य (tasya) - his; अनुबन्धः (anubandhaḥ) - consequence; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has come; त्वां (tvāṃ) - to you; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of the sons; राज्यकामुकम् (rājyakāmukam) - desiring the kingdom;]
(Harsh words being spoken, as you ignore, O son of Pritha, his consequence has come to you, desiring the kingdom of the sons.)

(The ancestral and paternal kingdom, abandoned then, O sinless one, was then conquered by the sons of Pṛthā, and you regained the entire earth.)
O sinless one, the kingdom of your ancestors and forefathers, which was once abandoned, was conquered by the sons of Pṛthā, and you regained the entire earth.
पाण्डुनावर्जितं राज्यं कौरवाणां यशस्तथा। ततश्चाभ्यधिकं भूयः पाण्डवैर्धर्मचारिभिः ॥७-६२-१५॥
pāṇḍunāvarjitaṃ rājyaṃ kauravāṇāṃ yaśastathā। tataścābhyadhikaṃ bhūyaḥ pāṇḍavairdharmacāribhiḥ ॥7-62-15॥

(Their such action, having attained you, is fruitless; which, from the ancestral, deprived from the kingdom, by you here for the bait, by the greed.)

यत्पुनर्युद्धकाले त्वं पुत्रान्गर्हयसे नृप। बहुधा व्याहरन्दोषान्न तदद्योपपद्यते ॥७-६२-१७॥
yat punar yuddhakāle tvaṃ putrān garhayase nṛpa। bahudhā vyāharan doṣān na tad adya upapadyate ॥7-62-17॥
[यत् (yat) - that; पुनः (punar) - again; युद्ध (yuddha) - battle; काले (kāle) - time; त्वम् (tvam) - you; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; गर्हयसे (garhayase) - criticize; नृप (nṛpa) - king; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; व्याहरन् (vyāharan) - speaking; दोषान् (doṣān) - faults; न (na) - not; तत् (tad) - that; अद्य (adya) - today; उपपद्यते (upapadyate) - is appropriate;]
(That you, O king, criticize your sons again at the time of battle, speaking of their faults in many ways, is not appropriate today.)

न हि रक्षन्ति राजानो युध्यन्तो जीवितं रणे। चमूं विगाह्य पार्थानां युध्यन्ते क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥७-६२-१८॥
na hi rakṣanti rājāno yudhyanto jīvitaṃ raṇe। camūṃ vigāhya pārthānāṃ yudhyante kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ॥7-62-18॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; रक्षन्ति (rakṣanti) - protect; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; युध्यन्तः (yudhyantaḥ) - fighting; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; चमूम् (camūm) - army; विगाह्य (vigāhya) - having penetrated; पार्थानाम् (pārthānām) - of the sons of Pritha; युध्यन्ते (yudhyante) - fight; क्षत्रियर्षभाः (kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among warriors;]
(Indeed, kings do not protect life while fighting in battle. Having penetrated the army of the sons of Pritha, the bulls among warriors fight.)
Kings do not safeguard their lives while engaged in battle. The noble warriors, having entered the army of the Pandavas, continue to fight.
यां तु कृष्णार्जुनौ सेनां यां सात्यकिवृकोदरौ। रक्षेरन्को नु तां युध्येच्चमूमन्यत्र कौरवैः ॥७-६२-१९॥
yāṃ tu kṛṣṇārjunau senāṃ yāṃ sātyakivṛkodarau। rakṣeranko nu tāṃ yudhyeccamūmanyatra kauravaiḥ ॥7-62-19॥

(But which army, protected by Krishna and Arjuna, and by Satyaki and Vrikodara, who indeed would fight that army elsewhere with the Kauravas?)
Who would dare to fight the army protected by Krishna, Arjuna, Satyaki, and Vrikodara, except the Kauravas?
येषां योद्धा गुडाकेशो येषां मन्त्री जनार्दनः। येषां च सात्यकिर्गोप्ता येषां गोप्ता वृकोदरः ॥७-६२-२०॥
yeṣāṃ yoddhā guḍākeśo yeṣāṃ mantrī janārdanaḥ। yeṣāṃ ca sātyakirgoptā yeṣāṃ goptā vṛkodaraḥ ॥7-62-20॥

(Who indeed could withstand them to fight, mortal archer, except from the Kauravas or their followers?)
