सञ्जय उवाच॥
Sanjaya said:
तस्यां निशायां व्युष्टायां द्रोणः शस्त्रभृतां वरः। स्वान्यनीकानि सर्वाणि प्राक्रामद्व्यूहितुं ततः ॥७-६३-१॥
At the break of dawn, Droṇa, the greatest among warriors, began to arrange all his troops.
शूराणां गर्जतां राजन्सङ्क्रुद्धानाममर्षिणाम्। श्रूयन्ते स्म गिरश्चित्राः परस्परवधैषिणाम् ॥७-६३-२॥
O king, the strange voices of the roaring heroes, who were enraged and impatient, desiring to kill each other, were heard.
विस्फार्य च धनूंष्याजौ ज्याः करैः परिमृज्य च। विनिःश्वसन्तः प्राक्रोशन्क्वेदानीं स धनञ्जयः ॥७-६३-३॥
In the midst of battle, having stretched their bows and wiped the bowstrings with their hands, they sighed and cried out, "Where is Dhananjaya now?"
विकोशान्सुत्सरूनन्ये कृतधारान्समाहितान्। पीतानाकाशसङ्काशानसीन्केचिच्च चिक्षिपुः ॥७-६३-४॥
Others released arrows that were opened, well-sharpened, and concentrated, while some threw yellow swords that resembled the sky.
चरन्तस्त्वसिमार्गांश्च धनुर्मार्गांश्च शिक्षया। सङ्ग्राममनसः शूरा दृश्यन्ते स्म सहस्रशः ॥७-६३-५॥
Thousands of heroes, trained in the paths of swords and bows, were seen, all with minds set on battle.
सघण्टाश्चन्दनादिग्धाः स्वर्णवज्रविभूषिताः। समुत्क्षिप्य गदाश्चान्ये पर्यपृच्छन्त पाण्डवम् ॥७-६३-६॥
Adorned with bells and smeared with sandalwood, decorated with gold and diamonds, others raised their maces and questioned Pāṇḍava.
अन्ये बलमदोन्मत्ताः परिघैर्बाहुशालिनः। चक्रुः सम्बाधमाकाशमुच्छ्रितेन्द्रध्वजोपमैः ॥७-६३-७॥
Others, intoxicated by their strength and armed with clubs, filled the sky with objects resembling the lofty banners of Indra.
नानाप्रहरणैश्चान्ये विचित्रस्रगलङ्कृताः। सङ्ग्राममनसः शूरास्तत्र तत्र व्यवस्थिताः ॥७-६३-८॥
Various heroes, adorned with wonderful garlands and armed with different weapons, were stationed here and there, ready for battle.
क्वार्जुनः क्व च गोविन्दः क्व च मानी वृकोदरः। क्व च ते सुहृदस्तेषामाह्वयन्तो रणे तदा ॥७-६३-९॥
Where are Arjuna, Govinda, and the proud Vrikodara? Where are your friends who were challenging them in battle at that time?
ततः शङ्खमुपाध्माय त्वरयन्वाजिनः स्वयम्। इतस्ततस्तान्रचयन्द्रोणश्चरति वेगितः ॥७-६३-१०॥
Then, Drona, having blown the conch, urged the horses himself and swiftly moved around, arranging them here and there.
तेष्वनीकेषु सर्वेषु स्थितेष्वाहवनन्दिषु। भारद्वाजो महाराज जयद्रथमथाब्रवीत् ॥७-६३-११॥
In all those armies that were stationed and rejoicing in battle, Bharadvaja, O great king, then spoke to Jayadratha.
त्वं चैव सौमदत्तिश्च कर्णश्चैव महारथः। अश्वत्थामा च शल्यश्च वृषसेनः कृपस्तथा ॥७-६३-१२॥
You, Saumadatti, Karna, Ashwatthama, Shalya, Vrishasena, and Kripa are all great warriors.
शतं चाश्वसहस्राणां रथानामयुतानि षट्। द्विरदानां प्रभिन्नानां सहस्राणि चतुर्दश ॥७-६३-१३॥
There were a hundred and six ten-thousands of chariots, along with fourteen thousand broken elephants.
पदातीनां सहस्राणि दंशितान्येकविंशतिः। गव्यूतिषु त्रिमात्रेषु मामनासाद्य तिष्ठत ॥७-६३-१४॥
Thousands of foot soldiers, twenty-one of them wounded, stand in three measures in cow-pens without reaching me.
तत्रस्थं त्वां न संसोढुं शक्ता देवाः सवासवाः। किं पुनः पाण्डवाः सर्वे समाश्वसिहि सैन्धव ॥७-६३-१५॥
Even the gods along with Indra cannot withstand you when you are situated there; how then can all the Pāṇḍavas? Rest assured, O Saindhava.
एवमुक्तः समाश्वस्तः सिन्धुराजो जयद्रथः। सम्प्रायात्सह गान्धारैर्वृतस्तैश्च महारथैः ॥ वर्मिभिः सादिभिर्यत्तैः प्रासपाणिभिरास्थितैः ॥७-६३-१६॥
Having been thus addressed and comforted, King Jayadratha of Sindhu set out with the Gandharas, surrounded by them and great charioteers, all equipped with armor and horsemen, prepared and stationed with spears in hand.
चामरापीडिनः सर्वे जाम्बूनदविभूषिताः। जयद्रथस्य राजेन्द्र हयाः साधुप्रवाहिनः ॥ ते चैव सप्तसाहस्रा द्विसाहस्राश्च सैन्धवाः ॥७-६३-१७॥
O King, all the horses of Jayadratha, adorned with yak-tail fans and gold, are swiftly moving. They number seven thousand and two thousand are from Sindhu.
मत्तानामधिरूढानां हस्त्यारोहैर्विशारदैः। नागानां भीमरूपाणां वर्मिणां रौद्रकर्मिणाम् ॥७-६३-१८॥
The intoxicated elephants, mounted by skilled riders, appeared terrifying in their armor and were fierce in their actions.
अध्यर्धेन सहस्रेण पुत्रो दुर्मर्षणस्तव। अग्रतः सर्वसैन्यानां योत्स्यमानो व्यवस्थितः ॥७-६३-१९॥
Your son Durmarshana, with one and a half thousand soldiers, stands ready to fight at the forefront of all the armies.
ततो दुःशासनश्चैव विकर्णश्च तवात्मजौ। सिन्धुराजार्थसिद्ध्यर्थमग्रानीके व्यवस्थितौ ॥७-६३-२०॥
Then, Duḥśāsana and Vikarṇa, your sons, were positioned at the forefront of the army to ensure the success of the Sindhu king.
दीर्घो द्वादशगव्यूतिः पश्चार्धे पञ्च विस्तृतः। व्यूहः स चक्रशकटो भारद्वाजेन निर्मितः ॥७-६३-२१॥
The formation, resembling a wheel-cart, was constructed by Bharadvaja, being long and spread over twelve cow-lengths, with five in the rear half.
नानानृपतिभिर्वीरैस्तत्र तत्र व्यवस्थितैः। रथाश्वगजपत्त्योघैर्द्रोणेन विहितः स्वयम् ॥७-६३-२२॥
Various kings and heroes were strategically positioned there with multitudes of chariots, horses, elephants, and infantry, all arranged personally by Drona.
पश्चार्धे तस्य पद्मस्तु गर्भव्यूहः सुदुर्भिदः। सूची पद्मस्य मध्यस्थो गूढो व्यूहः पुनः कृतः ॥७-६३-२३॥
In the latter half, his lotus formation is extremely difficult to penetrate. In the center of the lotus, a hidden formation is crafted once more.
एवमेतं महाव्यूहं व्यूह्य द्रोणो व्यवस्थितः। सूचीमुखे महेष्वासः कृतवर्मा व्यवस्थितः ॥७-६३-२४॥
Thus, Drona arranged the great formation and stood firm. At the forefront, the great archer Kritavarma took his position.
अनन्तरं च काम्बोजो जलसन्धश्च मारिष। दुर्योधनः सहामात्यस्तदनन्तरमेव च ॥७-६३-२५॥
Afterwards, Kamboja and Jalasandha, O great one, Duryodhana along with his ministers, followed immediately.
ततः शतसहस्राणि योधानामनिवर्तिनाम्। व्यवस्थितानि सर्वाणि शकटे सूचिरक्षिणः ॥७-६३-२६॥
Then, hundreds of thousands of fearless warriors were strategically positioned in the chariot, all with keen eyes.
तेषां च पृष्ठतो राज बलेन महता वृतः। जयद्रथस्ततो राजन्सूचिपाशे व्यवस्थितः ॥७-६३-२७॥
Behind them, the king was surrounded by a great army. Then, O king, Jayadratha was positioned in the needle formation.
शकटस्य तु राजेन्द्र भारद्वाजो मुखे स्थितः। अनु तस्याभवद्भोजो जुगोपैनं ततः स्वयम् ॥७-६३-२८॥
Bharadvaja stood at the mouth of the cart, O king. Following him, Bhoja took his place and protected him thereafter.
श्वेतवर्माम्बरोष्णीषो व्यूढोरस्को महाभुजः। धनुर्विस्फारयन्द्रोणस्तस्थौ क्रुद्ध इवान्तकः ॥७-६३-२९॥
Droṇa, clad in white armor and garments, with a turban, broad chest, and great arms, stood stretching his bow, resembling an angry Death.
पताकिनं शोणहयं वेदीकृष्णाजिनध्वजम्। द्रोणस्य रथमालोक्य प्रहृष्टाः कुरवोऽभवन् ॥७-६३-३०॥
The Kurus were filled with joy upon seeing Drona's chariot, which was adorned with a flag-bearer, red horses, and a banner made of altar-black deer skin.
सिद्धचारणसङ्घानां विस्मयः सुमहानभूत्। द्रोणेन विहितं दृष्ट्वा व्यूहं क्षुब्धार्णवोपमम् ॥७-६३-३१॥
The perfected beings and celestial singers were greatly astonished upon seeing the formation arranged by Drona, which resembled an agitated ocean.
सशैलसागरवनां नानाजनपदाकुलाम्। ग्रसेद्व्यूहः क्षितिं सर्वामिति भूतानि मेनिरे ॥७-६३-३२॥
The beings thought that the formation would engulf the entire earth, including its mountains, oceans, forests, and various crowded regions.
बहुरथमनुजाश्वपत्तिनागं; प्रतिभयनिस्वनमद्भुताभरूपम्। अहितहृदयभेदनं महद्वै; शकटमवेक्ष्य कृतं ननन्द राजा ॥७-६३-३३॥
The king was delighted to see the grand army composed of numerous chariots, younger brothers, horses, foot soldiers, and elephants, which had a terrifying sound and an awe-inspiring appearance, truly striking fear into the hearts of his enemies.
