एवमुक्त्वार्जुनं राजा त्रिभिर्मर्मातिगैः शरैः। प्रत्यविध्यन्महावेगैश्चतुर्भिश्चतुरो हयान् ॥७-७८-१॥
evamuktvārjunaṃ rājā tribhirmarmātigaiḥ śaraiḥ। pratyavidhyanmahāvegaiścaturbhiścaturo hayān ॥7-78-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - to Arjuna; राजा (rājā) - the king; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - with three; मर्मातिगैः (marmātigaiḥ) - piercing vital parts; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; प्रत्यविध्यत् (pratyavidhyat) - pierced; महावेगैः (mahāvegaiḥ) - with great speed; चतुर्भिः (caturbhiḥ) - with four; चतुरः (caturaḥ) - four; हयान् (hayān) - horses;]
(Thus, having spoken to Arjuna, the king pierced with three arrows piercing vital parts, and with great speed, pierced four horses with four arrows.)
After speaking thus to Arjuna, the king swiftly shot three arrows that pierced vital parts and four arrows that struck the four horses.
वासुदेवं च दशभिः प्रत्यविध्यत्स्तनान्तरे। प्रतोदं चास्य भल्लेन छित्त्वा भूमावपातयत् ॥७-७८-२॥
vāsudevaṁ ca daśabhiḥ pratyavidhyatstanāntare। pratodaṁ cāsya bhallena chittvā bhūmāvapātayat ॥7-78-2॥

(Vasudeva and pierced with ten in the chest. And his goad with an arrow cut off, caused to fall on the ground.)

तं चतुर्दशभिः पार्थश्चित्रपुङ्खैः शिलाशितैः। अविध्यत्तूर्णमव्यग्रस्तेऽस्याभ्रश्यन्त वर्मणः ॥७-७८-३॥

तेषां वैफल्यमालोक्य पुनर्नव च पञ्च च। प्राहिणोन्निशितान्बाणांस्ते चाभ्रश्यन्त वर्मणः ॥७-७८-४॥
teṣāṃ vaiphalyamālokya punarnava ca pañca ca। prāhiṇonniśitānbāṇāṃste cābhraśyanta varmaṇaḥ ॥7-78-4॥

(Seeing their failure, he sent nine and five sharp arrows again, and they pierced the armor.)
Observing their failure, he dispatched fourteen sharp arrows once more, which penetrated the armor.
अष्टाविंशत्तु तान्बाणानस्तान्विप्रेक्ष्य निष्फलान्। अब्रवीत्परवीरघ्नः कृष्णोऽर्जुनमिदं वचः ॥७-७८-५॥

अदृष्टपूर्वं पश्यामि शिलानामिव सर्पणम्। त्वया सम्प्रेषिताः पार्थ नार्थं कुर्वन्ति पत्रिणः ॥७-७८-६॥

I witness an unprecedented sight, akin to stones crawling. The arrows dispatched by you, O Arjuna, fail to achieve their intended purpose.
कच्चिद्गाण्डीवतः प्राणास्तथैव भरतर्षभ। मुष्टिश्च ते यथापूर्वं भुजयोश्च बलं तव ॥७-७८-७॥
kaccidgāṇḍīvataḥ prāṇāstathaiva bharatarṣabha। muṣṭiśca te yathāpūrvaṃ bhujayośca balaṃ tava ॥7-78-7॥

न चेद्विधेरयं कालः प्राप्तः स्यादद्य पश्चिमः। तव चैवास्य शत्रोश्च तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः ॥७-७८-८॥
na ced vidher ayaṃ kālaḥ prāptaḥ syād adya paścimaḥ। tava ca eva asya śatroḥ ca tat mama ācakṣva pṛcchataḥ ॥7-78-8॥

If the destined time had not arrived today, which is the last for both you and your enemy, then tell me, as I am asking.
विस्मयो मे महान्पार्थ तव दृष्ट्वा शरानिमान्। व्यर्थान्निपततः सङ्ख्ये दुर्योधनरथं प्रति ॥७-७८-९॥
vismayo me mahān pārtha tava dṛṣṭvā śarān imān। vyarthān nipatataḥ saṅkhye duryodhanarathaṃ prati ॥7-78-9॥

(Knowing, you also indeed, O Kṛṣṇa, bewilder me. How does what happened in the three worlds and what, O Keśava, exists?)
O Kṛṣṇa, even though you know everything, you still bewilder me. How is it that what has happened in the three worlds and what exists, O Keśava?
तथा भविष्यद्यच्चैव तत्सर्वं विदितं तव। न त्वेवं वेद वै कश्चिद्यथा त्वं मधुसूदन ॥७-७८-१५॥
tathā bhaviṣyadyaccaiva tatsarvaṃ viditaṃ tava। na tvevaṃ veda vai kaścidyathā tvaṃ madhusūdana ॥7-78-15॥

Behold, O Janardana, the might of my arms and bow. I shall overcome the Kauravas, even if they are shielded by armor.
इदमङ्गिरसे प्रादाद्देवेशो वर्म भास्वरम्। पुनर्ददौ सुरपतिर्मह्यं वर्म ससङ्ग्रहम् ॥७-७८-१९॥
idamaṅgirase prādāddeveśo varma bhāsvaram। punardadau surapatirmahyaṃ varma sasaṅgraham ॥7-78-19॥

(Fate, which armor this made by Brahma or self, not this will protect evil-minded today struck by an arrow by me.)
The armor, whether made by fate, Brahma, or by oneself, will not protect the evil-minded one today, as he has been struck by my arrow.

evamuktvārjuno bāṇānabhimantrya vyakarṣayat। vikṛṣyamāṇāṃstenaivaṃ dhanurmadhyagatāñśarān ॥ tānasyāstreṇa ciccheda drauṇiḥ sarvāstraghātinā ॥7-78-21॥

नैतदस्त्रं मया शक्यं द्विः प्रयोक्तुं जनार्दन। अस्त्रं मामेव हन्याद्धि पश्य त्वद्य बलं मम ॥७-७८-२३॥
