प्रीतियुक्तं च हृद्यं च मधुराक्षरमेव च। कालयुक्तं च चित्रं च स्वतया चाभिभाषितम् ॥७-८६-१॥
prītiyuktaṃ ca hṛdyaṃ ca madhurākṣarameva ca। kālayuktaṃ ca citraṃ ca svatayā cābhibhāṣitam ॥7-86-1॥
[प्रीतियुक्तं (prītiyuktaṃ) - endowed with affection; च (ca) - and; हृद्यम् (hṛdyam) - pleasing; च (ca) - and; मधुराक्षरम् (madhurākṣaram) - sweet-syllabled; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; कालयुक्तम् (kālayuktam) - timely; च (ca) - and; चित्रम् (citram) - wonderful; च (ca) - and; स्वतया (svatayā) - spontaneously; च (ca) - and; अभिभाषितम् (abhibhāṣitam) - spoken;]
(Endowed with affection and pleasing and sweet-syllabled indeed and timely and wonderful and spontaneously and spoken.)

धर्मराजस्य तद्वाक्यं निशम्य शिनिपुङ्गवः। सात्यकिर्भरतश्रेष्ठ प्रत्युवाच युधिष्ठिरम् ॥७-८६-२॥
dharmarājasya tadvākyaṃ niśamya śinipuṅgavaḥ। sātyakirbharataśreṣṭha pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiram ॥7-86-2॥
[धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmaraja; तत् (tat) - that; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; शिनिपुङ्गवः (śinipuṅgavaḥ) - the best of the Shinis; सात्यकिः (sātyakiḥ) - Satyaki; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - to Yudhishthira;]
(Having heard that speech of Dharmaraja, the best of the Shinis, Satyaki, replied to Yudhishthira, O best of the Bharatas.)
Upon hearing the words of Dharmaraja, Satyaki, the foremost of the Shinis, addressed Yudhishthira, the best among the Bharatas.
श्रुतं ते गदतो वाक्यं सर्वमेतन्मयाच्युत। न्याययुक्तं च चित्रं च फल्गुनार्थे यशस्करम् ॥७-८६-३॥
śrutaṃ te gadato vākyaṃ sarvametanmayācyuta। nyāyayuktaṃ ca citraṃ ca phalgunārthe yaśaskaram ॥7-86-3॥

(Heard by you is the sentence spoken by me, O Acyuta, all this is justified and wonderful, for Arjuna's sake, glorious.)
O Acyuta, you have heard all that I have spoken, which is justified and wonderful, and brings glory for Arjuna's sake.
एवंविधे तथा काले मदृशं प्रेक्ष्य संमतम्। वक्तुमर्हसि राजेन्द्र यथा पार्थं तथैव माम् ॥७-८६-४॥
evaṁvidhe tathā kāle madṛśaṁ prekṣya saṁmatam। vaktumarhasi rājendra yathā pārthaṁ tathaiva mām ॥7-86-4॥
[एवंविधे (evaṁvidhe) - in such a manner; तथा (tathā) - also; काले (kāle) - at the time; मदृशं (madṛśaṁ) - like me; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; संमतम् (saṁmatam) - approved; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; यथा (yathā) - as; पार्थं (pārthaṁ) - Arjuna; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; माम् (mām) - me;]
(In such a manner, at the time, having seen someone like me approved, you should speak, O king, as you do to Arjuna, in the same way to me.)
O King, at such a time, seeing someone like me who is approved, you should speak to me in the same way as you do to Arjuna.
न मे धनञ्जयस्यार्थे प्राणा रक्ष्याः कथञ्चन। त्वत्प्रयुक्तः पुनरहं किं न कुर्यां महाहवे ॥७-८६-५॥
na me dhanañjayasya-arthe prāṇā rakṣyāḥ kathaṁcana। tvat-prayuktaḥ punar-ahaṁ kiṁ na kuryāṁ mahāhave ॥7-86-5॥
[न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; धनञ्जयस्य (dhanañjayasya) - for Dhananjaya; अर्थे (arthe) - for the sake; प्राणाः (prāṇāḥ) - life; रक्ष्याः (rakṣyāḥ) - to be protected; कथञ्चन (kathaṁcana) - in any way; त्वत् (tvat) - by you; प्रयुक्तः (prayuktaḥ) - engaged; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अहम् (aham) - I; किम् (kim) - what; न (na) - not; कुर्याम् (kuryām) - shall do; महाहवे (mahāhave) - in the great battle;]
(My life is not to be protected for the sake of Dhananjaya in any way. Engaged by you, what shall I not do again in the great battle?)
I am not to protect my life for the sake of Dhananjaya in any way. Once engaged by you, what would I not do again in the great battle?
लोकत्रयं योधयेयं सदेवासुरमानुषम्। त्वत्प्रयुक्तो नरेन्द्रेह किमुतैतत्सुदुर्बलम् ॥७-८६-६॥
lokatrayaṁ yodhayeyaṁ sadevāsuramānuṣam। tvatprayukto narendreha kimutaitatsudurbalam ॥7-86-6॥
[लोकत्रयम् (lokatrayam) - three worlds; योधयेयम् (yodhayeyam) - I would fight; सदेव (sadeva) - with gods; असुर (asura) - demons; मानुषम् (mānuṣam) - humans; त्वत् (tvat) - by you; प्रयुक्तः (prayuktaḥ) - engaged; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; इह (iha) - here; किमु (kimu) - what to say of; तत् (tat) - that; सुदुर्बलम् (sudurbalam) - very weak;]
(I would fight the three worlds, with gods, demons, and humans. Engaged by you, O king, what to say of this very weak one here.)
I am ready to fight against the three worlds, including gods, demons, and humans. O king, if I am engaged by you, what challenge does this very weak one pose here?
सुयोधनबलं त्वद्य योधयिष्ये समन्ततः। विजेष्ये च रणे राजन्सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥७-८६-७॥
suyodhanabalaṁ tvadya yodhayiṣye samantataḥ। vijeṣye ca raṇe rājansatyametadbravīmi te ॥7-86-7॥
[सुयोधन (suyodhana) - Suyodhana; बलं (balaṁ) - strength; त्व (tva) - your; अद्य (adya) - today; योधयिष्ये (yodhayiṣye) - I will fight; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; विजेष्ये (vijeṣye) - I will conquer; च (ca) - and; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; राजन् (rājan) - O King; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truth; एतत् (etat) - this; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; ते (te) - to you;]
(I will fight your strength, Suyodhana, on all sides today. I will conquer in battle, O King, this truth I speak to you.)
Today, I declare to you, O King, that I will confront Suyodhana's forces on all fronts and emerge victorious in battle. This is the truth I speak to you.
कुशल्यहं कुशलिनं समासाद्य धनञ्जयम्। हते जयद्रथे राजन्पुनरेष्यामि तेऽन्तिकम् ॥७-८६-८॥
kuśalyahaṃ kuśalinaṃ samāsādya dhanañjayam। hate jayadrathe rājanpunareṣyāmi te'ntikam ॥7-86-8॥
[कुशल्य (kuśalya) - well-being; अहम् (aham) - I; कुशलिनम् (kuśalinam) - well; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having met; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhananjaya; हते (hate) - having slain; जयद्रथे (jayadrathe) - Jayadratha; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एष्यामि (eṣyāmi) - I will come; ते (te) - to you; अन्तिकम् (antikam) - near;]
(Having met Dhananjaya in well-being, I, having slain Jayadratha, O king, will come again near to you.)
I am well, having met Dhananjaya. O king, after slaying Jayadratha, I shall return to you again.
अवश्यं तु मया सर्वं विज्ञाप्यस्त्वं नराधिप। वासुदेवस्य यद्वाक्यं फल्गुनस्य च धीमतः ॥७-८६-९॥
avaśyaṃ tu mayā sarvaṃ vijñāpyastvaṃ narādhipa। vāsudevasya yadvākyaṃ phalgunasya ca dhīmataḥ ॥7-86-9॥
[अवश्यं (avaśyam) - certainly; तु (tu) - but; मया (mayā) - by me; सर्वं (sarvam) - everything; विज्ञाप्यः (vijñāpyaḥ) - to be informed; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; यद्वाक्यं (yadvākyaṃ) - whose words; फल्गुनस्य (phalgunasya) - of Phalguna; च (ca) - and; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise;]
(Certainly, but everything must be informed by me to you, O king, the words of Vāsudeva and of the wise Phalguna.)
Certainly, O king, I must inform you of everything, including the words of Vāsudeva and the wise Phalguna.
दृढं त्वभिपरीतोऽहमर्जुनेन पुनः पुनः। मध्ये सर्वस्य सैन्यस्य वासुदेवस्य शृण्वतः ॥७-८६-१०॥
dṛḍhaṃ tvabhiparīto'hamarjunena punaḥ punaḥ। madhye sarvasya sainyasya vāsudevasya śṛṇvataḥ ॥7-86-10॥
[दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firmly; त्व (tva) - indeed; अभिपरीतः (abhiparītaḥ) - surrounded; अहम् (aham) - I; अर्जुनेन (arjunena) - by Arjuna; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; सैन्यस्य (sainyasya) - the army; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; शृण्वतः (śṛṇvataḥ) - hearing;]
(Firmly indeed I am surrounded by Arjuna again and again, in the midst of all the army, hearing of Vāsudeva.)
I am firmly surrounded by Arjuna repeatedly, in the midst of the entire army, while listening to Vāsudeva.
अद्य माधव राजानमप्रमत्तोऽनुपालय। आर्यां युद्धे मतिं कृत्वा यावद्धन्मि जयद्रथम् ॥७-८६-११॥
adya mādhava rājānamapramatto'nupālaya। āryāṃ yuddhe matiṃ kṛtvā yāvaddhanmi jayadratham ॥7-86-11॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; अप्रमत्तः (apramattaḥ) - vigilant; अनुपालय (anupālaya) - protect; आर्याम् (āryām) - noble; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; मतिम् (matim) - mind; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; यावत् (yāvat) - until; हन्यामि (hanyāmi) - I kill; जयद्रथम् (jayadratham) - Jayadratha;]
(Today, O Mādhava, protect the king vigilantly. Having made up your mind in the noble battle, until I kill Jayadratha.)
Today, O Mādhava, be vigilant and protect the king. Make up your mind nobly in battle until I have slain Jayadratha.
त्वयि वाहं महाबाहो प्रद्युम्ने वा महारथे। नृपं निक्षिप्य गच्छेयं निरपेक्षो जयद्रथम् ॥७-८६-१२॥
tvayi vāhaṃ mahābāho pradyumne vā mahārathe। nṛpaṃ nikṣipya gaccheyaṃ nirapekṣo jayadratham ॥7-86-12॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; वा (vā) - or; अहम् (aham) - I; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; प्रद्युम्ने (pradyumne) - in Pradyumna; वा (vā) - or; महारथे (mahārathe) - in the great chariot-warrior; नृपम् (nṛpam) - the king; निक्षिप्य (nikṣipya) - having placed; गच्छेयं (gaccheyaṃ) - I would go; निरपेक्षः (nirapekṣaḥ) - without concern; जयद्रथम् (jayadratham) - towards Jayadratha;]
(In you or in Pradyumna, O mighty-armed one, having placed the king, I would go without concern towards Jayadratha.)
O mighty-armed one, I would entrust the king either to you or to Pradyumna, the great chariot-warrior, and proceed without concern towards Jayadratha.
जानीषे हि रणे द्रोणं रभसं श्रेष्ठसंमतम्। प्रतिज्ञा चापि ते नित्यं श्रुता द्रोणस्य माधव ॥७-८६-१३॥
jānīṣe hi raṇe droṇaṃ rabhasaṃ śreṣṭhasaṃmatam। pratijñā cāpi te nityaṃ śrutā droṇasya mādhava ॥7-86-13॥
[जानीषे (jānīṣe) - you know; हि (hi) - indeed; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; द्रोणं (droṇam) - Droṇa; रभसं (rabhasam) - fierce; श्रेष्ठसंमतम् (śreṣṭhasaṃmatam) - considered the best; प्रतिज्ञा (pratijñā) - vow; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ते (te) - your; नित्यं (nityam) - always; श्रुता (śrutā) - heard; द्रोणस्य (droṇasya) - of Droṇa; माधव (mādhava) - Mādhava;]
(You know indeed in battle Droṇa, fierce, considered the best. The vow also of yours always heard of Droṇa, Mādhava.)
Mādhava, you are aware that in battle, Droṇa is fierce and considered the best. You have always heard of Droṇa's vow.
ग्रहणं धर्मराजस्य भारद्वाजोऽनुगृध्यति। शक्तश्चापि रणे द्रोणो निगृहीतुं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥७-८६-१४॥
grahaṇaṃ dharmarājasya bhāradvājo'nugṛdhyati। śaktaścāpi raṇe droṇo nigṛhītuṃ yudhiṣṭhiram ॥7-86-14॥
[ग्रहणम् (grahaṇam) - capture; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmaraja; भारद्वाजः (bhāradvājaḥ) - Bharadvaja; अनुगृध्यति (anugṛdhyati) - desires; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; निगृहीतुं (nigṛhītuṃ) - to seize; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira;]
(Bharadvaja desires the capture of Dharmaraja. Drona is also capable of seizing Yudhishthira in battle.)
Bharadvaja seeks to capture Dharmaraja, and Drona is also capable of capturing Yudhishthira in battle.
एवं त्वयि समाधाय धर्मराजं नरोत्तमम्। अहमद्य गमिष्यामि सैन्धवस्य वधाय हि ॥७-८६-१५॥
evaṃ tvayi samādhāya dharmarājaṃ narottamam। ahamadya gamiṣyāmi saindhavasya vadhāya hi ॥7-86-15॥

(Thus, having placed Dharmaraja, the best of men, in you, I will go today for the killing of Saindhava indeed.)
Thus, entrusting Dharmaraja, the best among men, to you, I shall go today to kill Saindhava.
जयद्रथमहं हत्वा ध्रुवमेष्यामि माधव। धर्मराजं यथा द्रोणो निगृह्णीयाद्रणे बलात् ॥७-८६-१६॥
jayadratham ahaṁ hatvā dhruvam eṣyāmi mādhava। dharmarājaṁ yathā droṇo nigṛhṇīyād raṇe balāt ॥7-86-16॥
[जयद्रथम् (jayadratham) - Jayadratha; अहम् (aham) - I; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; एष्यामि (eṣyāmi) - will return; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmaraja; यथा (yathā) - as; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; निगृह्णीयात् (nigṛhṇīyāt) - may capture; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; बलात् (balāt) - by force;]
(Having killed Jayadratha, I will certainly return, O Mādhava. As Drona may capture Dharmaraja by force in battle.)
O Mādhava, having slain Jayadratha, I will surely return. Just as Drona might capture Dharmaraja by force in battle.
निगृहीते नरश्रेष्ठे भारद्वाजेन माधव। सैन्धवस्य वधो न स्यान्ममाप्रीतिस्तथा भवेत् ॥७-८६-१७॥
nigṛhīte naraśreṣṭhe bhāradvājena mādhava। saindhavasya vadho na syānmamāprītistathā bhavet ॥7-86-17॥
[निगृहीते (nigṛhīte) - restrained; नरश्रेष्ठे (naraśreṣṭhe) - O best of men; भारद्वाजेन (bhāradvājena) - by Bhāradvāja; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; सैन्धवस्य (saindhavasya) - of Saindhava; वधः (vadhaḥ) - killing; न (na) - not; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; मम (mama) - my; अप्रीतिः (aprītiḥ) - displeasure; तथा (tathā) - thus; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be;]
(O best of men, O Mādhava, restrained by Bhāradvāja, the killing of Saindhava should not be, thus my displeasure should be.)
O best of men, O Mādhava, if Saindhava is restrained by Bhāradvāja, then his killing should not occur, and thus my displeasure would be avoided.
एवं गते नरश्रेष्ठ पाण्डवे सत्यवादिनि। अस्माकं गमनं व्यक्तं वनं प्रति भवेत्पुनः ॥७-८६-१८॥
evaṃ gate naraśreṣṭha pāṇḍave satyavādini। asmākaṃ gamanaṃ vyaktaṃ vanaṃ prati bhavetpunaḥ ॥7-86-18॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; गते (gate) - having gone; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; पाण्डवे (pāṇḍave) - to the Pandava; सत्यवादिनि (satyavādini) - truth-speaking; अस्माकं (asmākaṃ) - our; गमनं (gamanaṃ) - going; व्यक्तं (vyaktaṃ) - clear; वनं (vanaṃ) - to the forest; प्रति (prati) - towards; भवेत् (bhavet) - will be; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Thus, having gone, O best of men, to the truth-speaking Pandava, our going towards the forest will be clear again.)
Thus, O best of men, when the truth-speaking Pandava has gone, it is clear that we must go to the forest again.
सोऽयं मम जयो व्यक्तं व्यर्थ एव भविष्यति। यदि द्रोणो रणे क्रुद्धो निगृह्णीयाद्युधिष्ठिरम् ॥७-८६-१९॥
so'yaṁ mama jayo vyaktaṁ vyartha eva bhaviṣyati। yadi droṇo raṇe kruddho nigṛhṇīyādyudhiṣṭhiram ॥7-86-19॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; मम (mama) - my; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; व्यक्तम् (vyaktam) - manifest; व्यर्थः (vyarthaḥ) - in vain; एव (eva) - indeed; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; यदि (yadi) - if; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; निगृह्णीयात् (nigṛhṇīyāt) - captures; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira;]
(He, this my victory will indeed be in vain if Drona, angry in battle, captures Yudhishthira.)
My victory will be meaningless if Drona, in his anger during the battle, captures Yudhishthira.
स त्वमद्य महाबाहो प्रियार्थं मम माधव। जयार्थं च यशोर्थं च रक्ष राजानमाहवे ॥७-८६-२०॥
sa tvamadya mahābāho priyārthaṃ mama mādhava। jayārthaṃ ca yaśor'thaṃ ca rakṣa rājānamāhave ॥7-86-20॥
[स (sa) - you; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; प्रियार्थं (priyārthaṃ) - for the sake of affection; मम (mama) - my; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; जयार्थं (jayārthaṃ) - for the sake of victory; च (ca) - and; यशोर्थं (yaśor'thaṃ) - for the sake of fame; च (ca) - and; रक्ष (rakṣa) - protect; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; आहवे (āhave) - in battle;]
(You today, O mighty-armed one, for the sake of affection, my O Mādhava, for the sake of victory and for the sake of fame, protect the king in battle.)
Today, O mighty-armed Mādhava, for my affection, and for the sake of victory and fame, protect the king in battle.
स भवान्मयि निक्षेपो निक्षिप्तः सव्यसाचिना। भारद्वाजाद्भयं नित्यं पश्यमानेन ते प्रभो ॥७-८६-२१॥
sa bhavānmayi nikṣepo nikṣiptaḥ savyasācinā। bhāradvājādbhayaṃ nityaṃ paśyamānena te prabho ॥7-86-21॥
[स (sa) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - you; मयि (mayi) - in me; निक्षेपः (nikṣepaḥ) - deposit; निक्षिप्तः (nikṣiptaḥ) - placed; सव्यसाचिना (savyasācinā) - by Arjuna; भारद्वाजात् (bhāradvājāt) - from Bharadvaja; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; पश्यमानः (paśyamānaḥ) - seeing; ते (te) - your; प्रभो (prabho) - lord;]
(He, the deposit placed in me by Arjuna, always sees fear from Bharadvaja, your lord.)
He, who has been entrusted to me by Arjuna, constantly perceives fear from Bharadvaja, O lord.
तस्यापि च महाबाहो नित्यं पश्यति संयुगे। नान्यं हि प्रतियोद्धारं रौक्मिणेयादृते प्रभो ॥ मां वापि मन्यते युद्धे भारद्वाजस्य धीमतः ॥७-८६-२२॥
tasyāpi ca mahābāho nityaṃ paśyati saṃyuge। nānyaṃ hi pratiyoddhāraṃ raukmiṇeyādṛte prabho ॥ māṃ vāpi manyate yuddhe bhāradvājasya dhīmataḥ ॥7-86-22॥
