Pancharatra and Core: In the encounter between Sahadeva and Karna, Sahadeva is allowed to escape from Karna because of the promise given to Kunti. But Karna insults Sahadeva with harsh words. Battle begins between Shalya and Virata. Shalya kills Virata's brother Shatānīka. Facing defeat, Virata retreats. When Arjuna rallies the retreating Pandava army, demon Alambusa fights him, but in vain.

सहदेवमथायान्तं द्रोणप्रेप्सुं विशां पते। कर्णो वैकर्तनो युद्धे वारयामास भारत ॥७-१४२-१॥
sahadevamathāyāntaṃ droṇaprepsuṃ viśāṃ pate। karṇo vaikartano yuddhe vārayāmāsa bhārata ॥7-142-1॥

(Then, as Sahadeva, desiring Drona, was coming, O lord of men, Karna, the son of Vikartana, stopped him in battle, O Bharata.)
Then, as Sahadeva approached with the desire to confront Drona, Karna, the son of Vikartana, intercepted him in battle, O Bharata.
सहदेवस्तु राधेयं विद्ध्वा नवभिराशुगैः। पुनर्विव्याध दशभिर्निशितैर्नतपर्वभिः ॥७-१४२-२॥
sahadevastu rādheyaṃ viddhvā navabhirāśugaiḥ। punarvivyādha daśabhirniśitairnataparvabhiḥ ॥7-142-2॥
[सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; तु (tu) - but; राधेयं (rādheyaṃ) - Radheya; विद्ध्वा (viddhvā) - having pierced; नवभिः (navabhiḥ) - with nine; आशुगैः (āśugaiḥ) - swift arrows; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; विव्याध (vivyādha) - pierced; दशभिः (daśabhiḥ) - with ten; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - sharp; नतपर्वभिः (nataparvabhiḥ) - bent-jointed arrows;]
(Sahadeva, but Radheya having pierced with nine swift arrows, again pierced with ten sharp bent-jointed arrows.)
Sahadeva, however, struck Radheya with nine swift arrows and then again pierced him with ten sharp, bent-jointed arrows.
तं कर्णः प्रतिविव्याध शतेन नतपर्वणाम्। सज्यं चास्य धनुः शीघ्रं चिच्छेद लघुहस्तवत् ॥७-१४२-३॥
taṃ karṇaḥ prativivyādha śatena nataparvaṇām। sajyaṃ cāsya dhanuḥ śīghraṃ ciccheda laghuhastavat ॥7-142-3॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; प्रतिविव्याध (prativivyādha) - pierced; शतेन (śatena) - with a hundred; नतपर्वणाम् (nataparvaṇām) - bent-jointed arrows; सज्यं (sajyaṃ) - strung; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; शीघ्रं (śīghraṃ) - quickly; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - cut off; लघुहस्तवत् (laghuhastavat) - like one with a light hand;]
(Karna pierced him with a hundred bent-jointed arrows. And quickly cut off his strung bow like one with a light hand.)
Karna attacked him with a hundred arrows that had bent joints, and swiftly severed his strung bow as if he had a light hand.
ततोऽन्यद्धनुरादाय माद्रीपुत्रः प्रतापवान्। कर्णं विव्याध विंशत्या तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥७-१४२-४॥
tato'nyaddhanurādāya mādrīputraḥ pratāpavān। karṇaṃ vivyādha viṃśatyā tadadbhutamivābhavat ॥7-142-4॥

(Then, taking another bow, the valiant son of Mādri pierced Karna with twenty (arrows); that became as if wonderful.)

तस्य कर्णो हयान्हत्वा शरैः संनतपर्वभिः। सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन द्रुतं निन्ये यमक्षयम् ॥७-१४२-५॥
tasya karṇo hayānhatvā śaraiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ। sārathiṁ cāsya bhallena drutaṁ ninye yamakṣayam ॥7-142-5॥

(Karṇa, having killed his horses with curved arrows, quickly sent his charioteer to the abode of Yama with a shaft.)
Karṇa, after slaying the horses with his curved arrows, swiftly dispatched the charioteer to the realm of Yama with a sharp arrow.
विरथः सहदेवस्तु खड्गं चर्म समाददे। तदप्यस्य शरैः कर्णो व्यधमत्प्रहसन्निव ॥७-१४२-६॥
virathaḥ sahadevastu khaḍgaṃ carma samādade। tadapyasya śaraiḥ karṇo vyadhamatprahasanniva ॥7-142-6॥

(Sahadeva, without a chariot, took up a sword and shield. But Karna, with arrows, pierced him as if smiling.)

ततो गुर्वीं महाघोरां हेमचित्रां महागदाम्। प्रेषयामास समरे वैकर्तनरथं प्रति ॥७-१४२-७॥
tato gurvīṃ mahāghorāṃ hemacitrāṃ mahāgadām। preṣayāmāsa samare vaikartanarathaṃ prati ॥7-142-7॥

(Then he sent the heavy, very terrible, golden-adorned great mace towards Karna's chariot in battle.)
Then he hurled the massive, fearsome, gold-embellished mace at Karna's chariot during the battle.
तामापतन्तीं सहसा सहदेवप्रवेरिताम्। व्यष्टम्भयच्छरैः कर्णो भूमौ चैनामपातयत् ॥७-१४२-८॥
tām āpatantīṃ sahasā sahadeva-praveritām। vyaṣṭambhayaccharaiḥ karṇo bhūmau caināmapātayat ॥7-142-8॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; आपतन्तीं (āpatantīṃ) - approaching; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; सहदेव (sahadeva) - Sahadeva; प्रवेरिताम् (praveritām) - dispatched; व्यष्टम्भयत् (vyaṣṭambhayat) - restrained; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; भूमौ (bhūmau) - to the ground; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (enām) - her; अपातयत् (apātayat) - caused to fall;]
(Karna suddenly restrained her, who was approaching and dispatched by Sahadeva, with arrows and caused her to fall to the ground.)
Karna, with his arrows, suddenly stopped her advance, who was sent by Sahadeva, and brought her down to the ground.
गदां विनिहतां दृष्ट्वा सहदेवस्त्वरान्वितः। शक्तिं चिक्षेप कर्णाय तामप्यस्याच्छिनच्छरैः ॥७-१४२-९॥
gadāṃ vinihatāṃ dṛṣṭvā sahadevastvarānvitaḥ। śaktiṃ cikṣepa karṇāya tāmapyasyācchinaccharaiḥ ॥7-142-9॥
[गदाम् (gadām) - mace; विनिहताम् (vinihatām) - destroyed; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; त्वरान्वितः (tvarānvitaḥ) - with speed; शक्तिम् (śaktim) - spear; चिक्षेप (cikṣepa) - hurled; कर्णाय (karṇāya) - at Karna; ताम् (tām) - that; अपि (api) - also; अस्य (asya) - his; अच्छिनत् (acchinat) - cut off; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows;]
(Seeing the mace destroyed, Sahadeva, with speed, hurled a spear at Karna, which he also cut off with his arrows.)
Upon witnessing the destruction of the mace, Sahadeva swiftly threw a spear at Karna, but Karna managed to cut it off with his arrows.
ससम्भ्रमस्ततस्तूर्णमवप्लुत्य रथोत्तमात्। सहदेवो महाराज दृष्ट्वा कर्णं व्यवस्थितम् ॥ रथचक्रं ततो गृह्य मुमोचाधिरथिं प्रति ॥७-१४२-१०॥
sasambhramastatastūrṇamavaplutya rathottamāt। sahadevo mahārāja dṛṣṭvā karṇaṃ vyavasthitam ॥ rathacakraṃ tato gṛhya mumocādhirathiṃ prati ॥7-142-10॥

(With agitation, then quickly jumping down from the excellent chariot, Sahadeva, O great king, having seen Karna standing, then grabbing the chariot wheel, released it towards Adhiratha.)

तमापतन्तं सहसा कालचक्रमिवोद्यतम्। शरैरनेकसाहस्रैरच्छिनत्सूतनन्दनः ॥७-१४२-११॥
tam āpatantaṃ sahasā kālacakram ivodyatam। śarair anekasāhasrair acchinat sūtanandanaḥ ॥7-142-11॥

(The son of Suta suddenly cut off him, who was approaching like a raised wheel of time, with many thousands of arrows.)

तस्मिंस्तु वितथे चक्रे कृते तेन महात्मना। वार्यमाणश्च विशिखैः सहदेवो रणं जहौ ॥७-१४२-१२॥

(In that false plan made by the great soul, being obstructed by arrows, Sahadeva left the battle.)

(Having approached him, Karna, after a moment, said smiling words to Sahadeva, O best of the Bharatas, O lord of the people.)
Karna, after approaching him and waiting for a moment, spoke with a smile to Sahadeva, addressing him as the best of the Bharatas and lord of the people.
मा युध्यस्व रणे वीर विशिष्टै रथिभिः सह। सदृशैर्युध्य माद्रेय वचो मे मा विशङ्किथाः ॥७-१४२-१४॥
mā yudhyasva raṇe vīra viśiṣṭai rathibhiḥ saha। sadṛśairyudhya mādreya vaco me mā viśaṅkithāḥ ॥7-142-14॥

अथैनं धनुषोऽग्रेण तुदन्भूयोऽब्रवीद्वचः। एषोऽर्जुनो रणे यत्तो युध्यते कुरुभिः सह ॥ तत्र गच्छस्व माद्रेय गृहं वा यदि मन्यसे ॥७-१४२-१५॥
athainaṃ dhanuṣo'greṇa tudanbhūyo'bravīdvacaḥ। eṣo'rjuno raṇe yatto yudhyate kurubhiḥ saha ॥ tatra gacchasva mādreya gṛhaṃ vā yadi manyase ॥7-142-15॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; धनुषः (dhanuṣaḥ) - of the bow; अग्रेण (agreṇa) - with the tip; तुदन् (tudan) - piercing; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; यत्तः (yattaḥ) - engaged; युध्यते (yudhyate) - fights; कुरुभिः (kurubhiḥ) - with the Kauravas; सह (saha) - together; तत्र (tatra) - there; गच्छस्व (gacchasva) - go; माद्रेय (mādreya) - son of Madri; गृहम् (gṛham) - home; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think;]
(Then, piercing him with the tip of the bow, he again said words: "This Arjuna, engaged in battle, fights together with the Kauravas. There, O son of Madri, go home or if you think.")
Then, piercing him with the tip of the bow, he spoke again: "This is Arjuna, engaged in battle, fighting alongside the Kauravas. Go there, O son of Madri, or go home if you wish."
एवमुक्त्वा तु तं कर्णो रथेन रथिनां वरः। प्रायात्पाञ्चालपाण्डूनां सैन्यानि प्रहसन्निव ॥७-१४२-१६॥
evamuktvā tu taṃ karṇo rathena rathināṃ varaḥ। prāyātpāñcālapāṇḍūnāṃ sainyāni prahasanniva ॥7-142-16॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तु (tu) - but; तम् (tam) - him; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; रथेन (rathena) - by chariot; रथिनाम् (rathinām) - of charioteers; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; प्रायात् (prāyāt) - departed; पाञ्चाल (pāñcāla) - of the Panchalas; पाण्डूनाम् (pāṇḍūnām) - of the Pandavas; सैन्यानि (sainyāni) - armies; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if;]
(Thus, having spoken, Karna, the best of charioteers, departed by chariot towards the armies of the Panchalas and Pandavas, as if smiling.)
After speaking thus, Karna, the greatest among charioteers, left with a smile towards the armies of the Panchalas and Pandavas.
वधप्राप्तं तु माद्रेयं नावधीत्समरेऽरिहा। कुन्त्याः स्मृत्वा वचो राजन्सत्यसन्धो महारथः ॥७-१४२-१७॥
vadha-prāptaṃ tu mādreyaṃ nāvadhīt samare 'ri-hā। kuntyāḥ smṛtvā vaco rājan satya-sandho mahā-rathaḥ ॥7-142-17॥
[वधप्राप्तम् (vadha-prāptam) - destined to be killed; तु (tu) - but; माद्रेयम् (mādreyam) - son of Madri; न (na) - not; अवधीत् (avadhīt) - killed; समरे (samare) - in battle; अरिहा (ari-hā) - destroyer of enemies; कुन्त्याः (kuntyāḥ) - of Kunti; स्मृत्वा (smṛtvā) - remembering; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सत्यसन्धः (satya-sandhaḥ) - true to his promise; महारथः (mahā-rathaḥ) - great charioteer;]
(But the son of Madri, destined to be killed, was not slain in battle by the destroyer of enemies, remembering the words of Kunti, O king, true to his promise, the great charioteer.)

(Sahadeva, then, O King, distressed and afflicted by arrows, tormented by Karna's harsh words, was disgusted with life.)

आरुरोह रथं चापि पाञ्चाल्यस्य महात्मनः। जनमेजयस्य समरे त्वरायुक्तो महारथः ॥७-१४२-१९॥

विराटं सहसेनं तु द्रोणार्थे द्रुतमागतम्। मद्रराजः शरौघेण छादयामास धन्विनम् ॥७-१४२-२०॥

(Then, O best of the Bharatas, Arjuna pierced the lord of the demons with four sharp arrows; he, being wounded, fled out of fear.)

वध्यमाना महाराज पाण्डवेन यशस्विना। सैनिका न्यपतन्नुर्व्यां वातनुन्ना इव द्रुमाः ॥७-१४२-४३॥
vadhyamānā mahārāja pāṇḍavena yaśasvinā। sainikā nyapatannurvyāṃ vātanunnā iva drumāḥ ॥7-142-43॥

तेषु तूत्साद्यमानेषु फल्गुनेन महात्मना। सम्प्राद्रवद्बलं सर्वं पुत्राणां ते विशां पते ॥७-१४२-४४॥
teṣu tūtsādyamāneṣu phalgunena mahātmanā। samprādravadbalaṃ sarvaṃ putrāṇāṃ te viśāṃ pate ॥7-142-44॥
