Core and Pancharatra: Angered, Duryodhana pulls up Drona and Karna and asks them to fight properly. Drona and Karna fiercely attack Panchala army. Though Pandava army retreats initially, Bhima along with Satyaki rally the forces and charge from the front. The great night enveloped all as the Pandavas and Kauravas continued their fierce battle everywhere.
sañjaya uvāca॥
Sanjaya said:
vidrutaṃ svabalaṃ dṛṣṭvā vadhyamānaṃ mahātmabhiḥ। krodhena mahatāviṣṭaḥ putrastava viśāṃ pate ॥7-147-1॥
Upon witnessing his own forces scattered and being slaughtered by the great warriors, your son, O lord of the people, was overtaken by immense rage.
abhyetya sahasā karṇaṃ droṇaṃ ca jayatāṃ varam। amarṣavaśamāpanno vākyajño vākyamabravīt ॥7-147-2॥
Suddenly approaching Karna and Drona, the best among the victorious, he, overcome by anger and skilled in speech, spoke.
bhavadbhyām iha saṅgrāmo kruddhābhyāṃ sampravartitaḥ। āhave nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā saindhavaṃ savyasācinā ॥7-147-3॥
The battle here was initiated by you both in anger. In the battle, Savyasachi saw Saindhava slain.
nihanyamānāṃ pāṇḍūnāṃ balena mama vāhinīm। bhūtvā tadvijaye śaktāvaśaktāviva paśyataḥ ॥7-147-4॥
Observing my army being decimated by the might of the Pāṇḍavas, it seemed as if I was both capable and incapable in that victory.
yadyahaṁ bhavatostyājyo na vācyo'smi tadaiva hi। āvāṁ pāṇḍusutānsaṅkhye jeṣyāva iti mānadau ॥7-147-5॥
"If I am to be abandoned by you both and not to be spoken of, then indeed, we both will conquer the sons of Pandu in battle, O givers of honor."
tadaivāhaṃ vacaḥ śrutvā bhavadbhyām anusammatam। kṛtavān pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṃ vairaṃ yodhavināśanam ॥7-147-6॥
Then, having heard the words that were approved by you both, I indeed initiated enmity with the Pandavas, leading to the destruction of warriors.
yadi nāhaṃ parityājyo bhavadbhyāṃ puruṣarṣabhau। yudhyetāmanurūpeṇa vikrameṇa suvikramau ॥7-147-7॥
If I am not to be abandoned by you both, O best among men, then you should fight with appropriate prowess, O greatly powerful ones.
vākpratodena tau vīrau praṇunnau tanayena te। prāvartayetāṃ tau yuddhaṃ ghaṭṭitāviva pannagau ॥7-147-8॥
Urged by your son, those two heroes, driven by the goad of speech, engaged in battle like two colliding serpents.
tatastau rathināṃ śreṣṭhau sarvalokadhanudharau। śaineyapramukhānpārthānabhidudruvatū raṇe ॥7-147-9॥
Then those two supreme charioteers, the greatest archers of all worlds, charged towards the sons of Pritha, led by Satyaki, in the battlefield.
tathaiva sahitāḥ pārthāḥ svena sainyena saṁvṛtāḥ। abhyavartanta tau vīrau nardamānau muhurmuhuḥ ॥7-147-10॥
In the same manner, the sons of Pritha, accompanied by their own army, surrounded and advanced towards those two heroes, repeatedly roaring.
atha droṇo maheṣvāso daśabhiḥ śinipuṅgavam। avidhyattvaritaṃ kruddhaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ॥7-147-11॥
Then Droṇa, the great archer, in his anger, swiftly pierced the foremost of the Shinis with ten arrows, being the best among all wielders of weapons.
karṇaśca daśabhirbāṇaiḥ putraśca tava saptabhiḥ। daśabhirvṛṣasenaśca saubalaścāpi saptabhiḥ ॥ ete kaurava saṅkrande śaineyaṃ paryavārayan ॥7-147-12॥
Karna shot ten arrows, and your son shot seven. Vrishasena shot ten, and Saubala also shot seven. These Kauravas surrounded Shainya in the battle.
dṛṣṭvā ca samare droṇaṃ nighnantaṃ pāṇḍavīṃ camūm। vivyadhuḥ somakāstūrṇaṃ samantāccharavṛṣṭibhiḥ ॥7-147-13॥
Upon witnessing Droṇa attacking the Pāṇḍava army in the battlefield, the Somakas swiftly retaliated from all directions with a barrage of arrows.
tato droṇo'haratprāṇānkṣatriyāṇāṃ viśāṃ pate। raśmibhirbhāskaro rājaṃstamasāmiva bhārata ॥7-147-14॥
Then, O Bharata, Drona took the lives of the Kshatriyas, just as the sun dispels darkness with its rays, O king.
droṇena vadhyamānānāṃ pāñcālānāṃ viśāṃ pate। śuśruve tumulaḥ śabdaḥ krośatāmitaretaram ॥7-147-15॥
O lord of the people, a tumultuous sound was heard as the Panchalas were being slain by Drona, with cries echoing among them.
putrānanye pitṝnanye bhrātr̥nanye ca mātulān। bhāgineyānvayasyāṁśca tathā sambandhibāndhavān ॥ utsṛjyotsṛjya gacchanti tvaritā jīvitepsavaḥ ॥7-147-16॥
In their desire to save their own lives, people hurriedly abandon their sons, fathers, brothers, maternal uncles, nephews, friends, relatives, and kinsmen.
apare mohitā mohāttamevābhimukhā yayuḥ। pāṇḍavānāṃ raṇe yodhāḥ paralokaṃ tathāpare ॥7-147-17॥
Some others, deluded by confusion, went straight ahead. The warriors of the Pandavas in the battle went to the other world, and so did others.
sā tathā pāṇḍavī senā vadhyamānā mahātmabhiḥ। niśi samprādravadrājannutṣṛjyolkāḥ sahasraśaḥ ॥7-147-18॥
The Pandava army, being slaughtered by the great warriors, fled in the night, O king, leaving behind thousands of torches.
paśyato bhīmasenasya vijayasyācyutasya ca। yamayordharmaputrasya pārṣatasya ca paśyataḥ ॥7-147-19॥
Observing Bhimasena, Arjuna, Krishna, the twins Nakula and Sahadeva, Yudhishthira, and Dhrishtadyumna.
tamasā saṁvṛte loke na prājñāyata kiñcana। kauravāṇāṁ prakāśena dṛśyante tu drutāḥ pare ॥7-147-20॥
In a world shrouded in darkness, nothing was visible. However, the light of the Kauravas quickly revealed others.
dravamāṇaṃ tu tatsainyaṃ droṇakarṇau mahārathau। jaghnatuḥ pṛṣṭhato rājankirantau sāyakānbahūn ॥7-147-21॥
Drona and Karna, the great warriors, attacked the retreating army from behind, O king, by showering numerous arrows.
pāñcāleṣu prabhagneṣu dīryamāṇeṣu sarvaśaḥ। janārdano dīnamanāḥ pratyabhāṣata phalgunam ॥7-147-22॥
As the Panchalas were being broken and scattered in all directions, Janardana, with a heavy heart, spoke to Arjuna.
droṇakarṇau maheṣvāsāvetau pārṣatasātyakī। pāñcālāṁścaiva sahitau jaghnatuḥ sāyakairbhṛśam ॥7-147-23॥
Drona and Karna, the two great archers, fiercely attacked and killed Parshata, Satyaki, and the Panchalas with their arrows.
etayoḥ śaravarṣeṇa prabhagnā no mahārathāḥ। vāryamāṇāpi kaunteya pṛtanā nāvatiṣṭhate ॥7-147-24॥
The great charioteers of our side are shattered by the rain of arrows from these two. Despite attempts to restrain them, O son of Kunti, the army cannot hold its ground.
etāvāvāṃ sarvasainyairvyūḍhaiḥ samyagudāyudhaiḥ। droṇaṃ ca sūtaputraṃ ca prayatāvaḥ prabādhitum ॥7-147-25॥
These two warriors, with their armies properly arrayed and weapons raised, are intent on overpowering Drona and Karna.
etau hi balinau śūrau kṛtāstrau jitakāśinau। upekṣitau balaṃ kruddhau nāśayetāṃ niśāmimām ॥ eṣa bhīmo'bhiyātyugraḥ punarāvartya vāhinīm ॥7-147-26॥
These two mighty heroes, skilled in weaponry and conquerors of enemies, if overlooked, might in their wrath destroy this night. Here comes the fierce Bhima, returning to the battlefield, turning back the army.
vṛkodaraṃ tathāyāntaṃ dṛṣṭvā tatra janārdanaḥ। punarevābravīdrājanharṣayanniva pāṇḍavam ॥7-147-27॥
Upon seeing Bhima approaching, Krishna spoke again to the King, as if to cheer the Pandava.
eṣa bhīmo raṇaślāghī vṛtaḥ somakapāṇḍavaiḥ। ruṣito'byeti vegena droṇakarṇau mahābalau ॥7-147-28॥
Bhima, known for his valor in battle, is advancing swiftly and angrily towards the powerful Drona and Karna, accompanied by the Somakas and Pandavas.
etena sahito yudhya pāñcālaiśca mahārathaiḥ। āśvāsanārthaṃ sarveṣāṃ sainyānāṃ pāṇḍunandana ॥7-147-29॥
O son of Pandu, fight alongside the Panchalas and the great charioteers to reassure all the soldiers.
tatastau puruṣavyāghrāvubhau mādhavapāṇḍavau। droṇakarṇau samāsādya dhiṣṭhitau raṇamūrdhani ॥7-147-30॥
Then those two great warriors, Madhava and Pandava, confronted Drona and Karna, standing ready at the forefront of the battle.
tatastatpunarāvṛttaṃ yudhiṣṭhirabalaṃ mahat। tato droṇaśca karṇaśca parānmamṛdaturyudhi ॥7-147-31॥
Then the great army of Yudhishthira returned. Following this, Drona and Karna crushed the enemies in the battle.
sa samprahārastumulo niśi pratyabhavanmahān। yathā sāgarayo rājaṃścandrodayavivṛddhayoḥ ॥7-147-32॥
A great and tumultuous battle took place at night, O king, resembling the swelling of the oceans with the rising of the moon.
tata utsṛjya pāṇibhyaḥ pradīpāṃstava vāhinī। yuyudhe pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhamunmattavadahaḥkṣaye ॥7-147-33॥
Then, as the day ended, your army, having released the torches from their hands, fought fiercely with the Pandavas as if possessed.
rajasā tamasā caiva saṁvṛte bhṛśadāruṇe। kevalaṁ nāmagotreṇa prāyudhyanta jayaiṣiṇaḥ ॥7-147-34॥
In a state overwhelmed by passion and darkness, they engaged in fierce battles, driven solely by their names and lineage, with the desire to win.
aśrūyanta hi nāmāni śrāvyamāṇāni pārthivaiḥ। praharadbhiḥmahārāja svayaṃvara ivāhave ॥7-147-35॥
The names were loudly proclaimed by the kings and warriors, O great king, as if it were a self-choice ceremony in the midst of battle.
niḥśabdam āsīt sahasā punaḥ śabdo mahān abhūt। kruddhānāṃ yudhyamānānāṃ jayatāṃ jīyatām api ॥7-147-36॥
There was a sudden silence, but then a great sound arose again, from the angry fighters, the victors, and even the living.
yatra yatra sma dṛśyante pradīpāḥ kurusattama। tatra tatra sma te śūrā nipatanti pataṅgavat ॥7-147-37॥
Wherever lamps are seen, O best of the Kurus, there indeed those heroes fall like moths, drawn to their destruction.
tathā saṃyudhyamānānāṃ vigāḍhābhūnmahāniśā। pāṇḍavānāṃ ca rājendra kauravāṇāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ॥7-147-38॥
Thus, O King, the great night enveloped all as the Pandavas and Kauravas continued their fierce battle everywhere.
