bhīmasenaṃ samākīrṇaṃ dṛṣṭvāstreṇa dhanañjayaḥ। tejasaḥ pratighātārthaṃ vāruṇena samāvṛṇot ॥7-171-1॥

Upon seeing Bhimasena enveloped by the weapon, Dhananjaya used the Varuna weapon to counteract its energy.
नालक्षयत तं कश्चिद्वारुणास्त्रेण संवृतम्। अर्जुनस्य लघुत्वाच्च संवृतत्वाच्च तेजसः ॥७-१७१-२॥
nālakṣayata taṃ kaścidvāruṇāstreṇa saṃvṛtam। arjunasya laghutvācca saṃvṛtatvācca tejasaḥ ॥7-171-2॥

No one could see him because he was concealed by Varuna's weapon, and the lightness and covering of Arjuna's brilliance made him invisible.
साश्वसूतरथो भीमो द्रोणपुत्रास्त्रसंवृतः। अग्नावग्निरिव न्यस्तो ज्वालामाली सुदुर्दृशः ॥७-१७१-३॥

Bhima, with his horses, charioteer, and chariot, was enveloped by the weapon of Drona's son, appearing like a fire placed within a fire, adorned with a garland of flames, and was difficult to behold.
यथा रात्रिक्षये राजञ्ज्योतींष्यस्तगिरिं प्रति। समापेतुस्तथा बाणा भीमसेनरथं प्रति ॥७-१७१-४॥
yathā rātrikṣaye rājañjyotīṃṣyastagiriṃ prati। samāpetustathā bāṇā bhīmasenarathaṃ prati ॥7-171-4॥

(Just as, at the end of the night, O king, the lights approach the western mountain, in the same way, the arrows approached Bhimasena's chariot.)
O king, just as the lights move towards the western mountain at the end of the night, so did the arrows move towards Bhimasena's chariot.
स हि भीमो रथश्चास्य हयाः सूतश्च मारिष। संवृता द्रोणपुत्रेण पावकान्तर्गताभवन् ॥७-१७१-५॥
sa hi bhīmo rathaścāsya hayāḥ sūtaśca māriṣa। saṁvṛtā droṇaputreṇa pāvakāntargatābhavan ॥7-171-5॥

(He, indeed, Bhima, his chariot, horses, and charioteer, O respected one, were enveloped by Drona's son and entered the fire.)
Bhima, along with his chariot, horses, and charioteer, was engulfed by the fire conjured by Drona's son, O respected one.
यथा दग्ध्वा जगत्कृत्स्नं समये सचराचरम्। गच्छेदग्निर्विभोरास्यं तथास्त्रं भीममावृणोत् ॥७-१७१-६॥
yathā dagdhvā jagatkṛtsnaṃ samaye sacarācaram। gacchedagnirvibhorāsyaṃ tathāstraṃ bhīmamāvṛṇot ॥7-171-6॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; दग्ध्वा (dagdhvā) - having burnt; जगत् (jagat) - world; कृत्स्नं (kṛtsnaṃ) - entire; समये (samaye) - at the time; सचराचरम् (sacarācaram) - with moving and non-moving; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - would go; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; विभोः (vibhoḥ) - of the lord; आस्यं (āsyaṃ) - mouth; तथा (tathā) - so; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; भीमम् (bhīmam) - terrible; आवृणोत् (āvṛṇot) - covered;]
(Just as, having burnt the entire world with moving and non-moving beings at the time, the fire would go to the mouth of the lord, so the terrible weapon covered.)
Just as the fire, after consuming the entire world with all its moving and non-moving beings, would enter the mouth of the Lord, so did the terrible weapon envelop everything.
सूर्यमग्निः प्रविष्टः स्याद्यथा चाग्निं दिवाकरः। तथा प्रविष्टं तत्तेजो न प्राज्ञायत किञ्चन ॥७-१७१-७॥
sūryam agniḥ praviṣṭaḥ syād yathā ca agniṃ divākaraḥ। tathā praviṣṭaṃ tat tejo na prājñāyata kiñcana ॥7-171-7॥
[सूर्यम् (sūryam) - sun; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; प्रविष्टः (praviṣṭaḥ) - entered; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; यथा (yathā) - as; च (ca) - and; अग्निम् (agniṃ) - fire; दिवाकरः (divākaraḥ) - sun; तथा (tathā) - thus; प्रविष्टम् (praviṣṭam) - entered; तत् (tat) - that; तेजः (tejaḥ) - light; न (na) - not; प्राज्ञायत (prājñāyata) - was perceived; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(The sun would enter the fire, as the sun enters the fire. Thus, that light entered and was not perceived at all.)
Just as the sun enters the fire, so did that light enter and was not perceived at all.
विकीर्णमस्त्रं तद्दृष्ट्वा तथा भीमरथं प्रति। उदीर्यमाणं द्रौणिं च निष्प्रतिद्वंद्वमाहवे ॥७-१७१-८॥
vikīrṇamastraṃ taddṛṣṭvā tathā bhīmarathaṃ prati। udīryamāṇaṃ drauṇiṃ ca niṣpratidvaṃdvamāhave ॥7-171-8॥

सर्वसैन्यानि पाण्डूनां न्यस्तशस्त्राण्यचेतसः। युधिष्ठिरपुरोगांश्च विमुखांस्तान्महारथान् ॥७-१७१-९॥

अर्जुनो वासुदेवश्च त्वरमाणौ महाद्युती। अवप्लुत्य रथाद्वीरौ भीममाद्रवतां ततः ॥७-१७१-१०॥

(Then, having entered that energy born of the power of weapons of Droṇa's son, those two very strong ones entered by illusion at that time.)
Then, those two mighty warriors, using illusion, entered the energy born from the power of Droṇa's son's weapons.
न्यस्तशस्त्रौ ततस्तौ तु नादहदस्त्रजोऽनलः। वारुणास्त्रप्रयोगाच्च वीर्यवत्त्वाच्च कृष्णयोः ॥७-१७१-१२॥
nyastaśastrau tatastau tu nādahadastrajo'nalaḥ। vāruṇāstraprayogācca vīryavatvācca kṛṣṇayoḥ ॥7-171-12॥
[न्यस्त (nyasta) - laid down; शस्त्रौ (śastrau) - weapons; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तौ (tau) - those two; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; अदहत् (adahat) - burned; अस्त्रजः (astrajaḥ) - born of weapons; अनलः (analaḥ) - fire; वारुण (vāruṇa) - of Varuna; अस्त्र (astra) - weapon; प्रयोगात् (prayogāt) - due to the application; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवत्त्वात् (vīryavatvāt) - due to the prowess; च (ca) - and; कृष्णयोः (kṛṣṇayoḥ) - of the Krishnas;]
(Then, those two laid down their weapons, but the fire born of weapons did not burn due to the application of Varuna's weapon and the prowess of the Krishnas.)

ततश्चकृषतुर्भीमं तस्य सर्वायुधानि च। नारायणास्त्रशान्त्यर्थं नरनारायणौ बलात् ॥७-१७१-१३॥
tataś cakṛṣatur bhīmaṃ tasya sarvāyudhāni ca। nārāyaṇāstraśāntyarthaṃ naranārāyaṇau balāt ॥7-171-13॥

(Then Bhima and all his weapons were pulled by force by Nara and Narayana for the purpose of pacifying the Narayana weapon.)

अपकृष्यमाणः कौन्तेयो नदत्येव महारथः। वर्धते चैव तद्घोरं द्रौणेरस्त्रं सुदुर्जयम् ॥७-१७१-१४॥
apakṛṣyamāṇaḥ kaunteyo nadatyeva mahārathaḥ। vardhate caiva tadghoraṃ drauṇerastraṃ sudurjayam ॥7-171-14॥

(Being drawn back, the son of Kunti indeed roars, the great chariot-warrior. And indeed, that terrible weapon of Drona's son grows very difficult to conquer.)
As he is being drawn back, the son of Kunti, a great chariot-warrior, roars loudly. Meanwhile, the terrible weapon of Drona's son becomes increasingly difficult to overcome.
तमब्रवीद्वासुदेवः किमिदं पाण्डुनन्दन। वार्यमाणोऽपि कौन्तेय यद्युद्धान्न निवर्तसे ॥७-१७१-१५॥
tamabravīd vāsudevaḥ kim idaṃ pāṇḍunandana। vāryamāṇo'pi kaunteya yadyuddhānna nivartase ॥7-171-15॥

(Vasudeva said to him, "What is this, O son of Pandu? Even if being restrained, O son of Kunti, if you do not desist from battle.")

यदि युद्धेन जेयाः स्युरिमे कौरवनन्दनाः। वयमप्यत्र युध्येम तथा चेमे नरर्षभाः ॥७-१७१-१६॥
yadi yuddhena jeyāḥ syurime kauravanandanāḥ। vayamapyatra yudhyema tathā ceme nararṣabhāḥ ॥7-171-16॥

(If these descendants of Kuru would be conquerable by battle, we would also fight here, and thus these bulls among men.)
If these descendants of Kuru could be conquered by battle, we too would fight here, and so would these great warriors.
रथेभ्यस्त्ववतीर्णास्तु सर्व एव स्म तावकाः। तस्मात्त्वमपि कौन्तेय रथात्तूर्णमपाक्रम ॥७-१७१-१७॥
rathebhyaḥ tv avatīrṇāḥ tu sarva eva sma tāvakāḥ। tasmāt tvam api kaunteya rathāt tūrṇam apākrama ॥7-171-17॥

(From the chariots, your men had indeed descended. Therefore, you also, O son of Kunti, quickly depart from the chariot.)
Your men had already descended from the chariots. Therefore, you too, O son of Kunti, should quickly get down from the chariot.
एवमुक्त्वा ततः कृष्णो रथाद्भूमिमपातयत्। निःश्वसन्तं यथा नागं क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनम् ॥७-१७१-१८॥
evamuktvā tataḥ kṛṣṇo rathādbhūmimapātayat। niḥśvasantaṃ yathā nāgaṃ krodhasaṃraktalocanam ॥7-171-18॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Krishna; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; भूमिम् (bhūmim) - to the ground; अपातयत् (apātayat) - descended; निःश्वसन्तम् (niḥśvasantam) - breathing heavily; यथा (yathā) - like; नागम् (nāgam) - an elephant; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; संरक्त (saṃrakta) - reddened; लोचनम् (locanam) - eyes;]
(Thus having spoken, then Krishna descended from the chariot to the ground, breathing heavily like an elephant, with eyes reddened in anger.)
After speaking thus, Krishna descended from the chariot to the ground, breathing heavily like an enraged elephant, his eyes red with anger.
यदापकृष्टः स रथान्न्यासितश्चायुधं भुवि। ततो नारायणास्त्रं तत्प्रशान्तं शत्रुतापनम् ॥७-१७१-१९॥
yadāpakṛṣṭaḥ sa rathānnyāsitaścāyudhaṃ bhuvi। tato nārāyaṇāstraṃ tatpraśāntaṃ śatrutāpanam ॥7-171-19॥

(When he was withdrawn from the chariot and the weapon was placed on the ground, then that Narayana weapon, the enemy tormentor, was pacified.)

तस्मिन्प्रशान्ते विधिना तदा तेजसि दुःसहे। बभूवुर्विमलाः सर्वा दिशः प्रदिश एव च ॥७-१७१-२०॥
tasminpraśānte vidhinā tadā tejasi duḥsahe। babhūvurvimalāḥ sarvā diśaḥ pradiśa eva ca ॥7-171-20॥

(In that calm, by the method, then in the unbearable splendor, all directions and sub-directions indeed became pure.)

प्रववुश्च शिवा वाताः प्रशान्ता मृगपक्षिणः। वाहनानि च हृष्टानि योधाश्च मनुजेश्वर ॥७-१७१-२१॥

(The auspicious winds blew, the animals and birds were calm. The vehicles were joyful, and the warriors, O lord of men.)
