(The slain charioteers fell by Arjuna's bow-released arrows. The horses ran around with loosened harnesses here and there.)

तद्दृष्ट्वा कर्म पार्थस्य द्रौणिराहवशोभिनः। अवाकिरद्रणे कृष्णं समन्तान्निशितैः शरैः ॥८-४५-११॥

(Having seen that action of Arjuna, the son of Droṇa, glorious in battle, showered Kṛṣṇa in the battle from all sides with sharp arrows.)
Upon witnessing Arjuna's actions, the son of Droṇa, renowned for his prowess in battle, unleashed a barrage of sharp arrows upon Kṛṣṇa from every direction.
ततोऽर्जुनं महाराज द्रौणिरायम्य पत्रिणा। वक्षोदेशे समासाद्य ताडयामास संयुगे ॥८-४५-१२॥

सोऽनेकधापतद्भूमौ भारद्वाजस्य सायकैः। विशीर्णः पर्वतो राजन्यथा स्यान्मातरिश्वना ॥८-४५-१५॥
so'nekadhāpatadbhūmau bhāradvājasya sāyakaiḥ। viśīrṇaḥ parvato rājanyathā syānmātariśvanā ॥8-45-15॥

(The horses ran away, overcome by the speed of arrows. Then there was a sound again of your army, O Bharata.)

पाण्डवास्तु जयं लब्ध्वा तव सैन्यमुपाद्रवन्। समन्तान्निशितान्बाणान्विमुञ्चन्तो जयैषिणः ॥८-४५-२१॥
pāṇḍavāstu jayaṃ labdhvā tava sainyamupādravan। samantānniśitānbāṇānvimuñcanto jayaiṣiṇaḥ ॥8-45-21॥

(You alone, O great one, know the activity of the king, the best of the Bharatas. Indeed, if I, Arjuna, go there, the heroes will say that I am afraid.)
"You alone, O great one, understand the actions of the king, the best of the Bharatas. If I, Arjuna, were to go there, the heroes would claim that I am fearful."
ततोऽब्रवीदर्जुनो भीमसेनं; संशप्तकाः प्रत्यनीकं स्थिता मे। एतानहत्वा न मया तु शक्य; मितोऽपयातुं रिपुसङ्घगोष्ठात् ॥८-४५-६३॥
tato'bravīd arjuno bhīmasenaṃ; saṃśaptakāḥ pratyanīkaṃ sthitā me। etān ahatvā na mayā tu śakya; mito'payātuṃ ripusaṅghagoṣṭhāt ॥8-45-63॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - to Bhimasena; संशप्तकाः (saṃśaptakāḥ) - the Samsaptakas; प्रत्यनीकम् (pratyanīkam) - opposite army; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - standing; मे (me) - my; एतान् (etān) - these; अहत्वा (ahatvā) - without killing; न (na) - not; मया (mayā) - by me; तु (tu) - but; शक्य (śakya) - possible; मितः (mitaḥ) - limited; अपयातुम् (apayātum) - to retreat; रिपु-सङ्घ-गोष्ठात् (ripu-saṅgha-goṣṭhāt) - from the enemy group;]
(Then Arjuna said to Bhimasena, "The Samsaptakas are standing as my opposite army. Without killing these, it is not possible for me to retreat from the enemy group.")
Arjuna then addressed Bhimasena, stating that the Samsaptakas were positioned against him as his opposing force. He expressed that without defeating them, he could not withdraw from the assembly of enemies.
अथाब्रवीदर्जुनं भीमसेनः; स्ववीर्यमाश्रित्य कुरुप्रवीर। संशप्तकान्प्रतियोत्स्यामि सङ्ख्ये; सर्वानहं याहि धनञ्जयेति ॥८-४५-६४॥

(Then Bhimasena said to Arjuna, "O hero of the Kurus, relying on my own strength, I will fight all the Samsaptakas in battle; you go, O Dhananjaya.")
Then Bhimasena addressed Arjuna, saying, "O hero of the Kurus, with confidence in my own strength, I will take on all the Samsaptakas in battle; you proceed, O Dhananjaya."
तद्भीमसेनस्य वचो निशम्य; सुदुर्वचं भ्रातुरमित्रमध्ये। द्रष्टुं कुरुश्रेष्ठमभिप्रयातुं; प्रोवाच वृष्णिप्रवरं तदानीम् ॥८-४५-६५॥
tadbhīmasenasya vaco niśamya; sudurvacaṃ bhrāturamitra madhye। draṣṭuṃ kuruśreṣṭham abhiprayātuṃ; provāca vṛṣṇipravaraṃ tadānīm ॥8-45-65॥
[तत् (tat) - that; भीमसेनस्य (bhīmasenasya) - of Bhimasena; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; सुदुर्वचम् (sudurvacam) - harsh words; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of the brother; अमित्रमध्ये (amitra madhye) - among enemies; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; कुरुश्रेष्ठम् (kuruśreṣṭham) - the best of the Kurus; अभिप्रयातुम् (abhiprayātum) - to approach; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; वृष्णिप्रवरम् (vṛṣṇipravaram) - the best of the Vrishnis; तदानीम् (tadānīm) - then;]
(Having heard those words of Bhimasena, harsh words of his brother among enemies, to see the best of the Kurus, to approach, he then said to the best of the Vrishnis.)
Upon hearing the harsh words of Bhimasena, spoken among enemies, he then addressed the best of the Vrishnis, intending to approach the foremost of the Kurus.
चोदयाश्वान्हृषीकेश विगाह्यैतं रथार्णवम्। अजातशत्रुं राजानं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि केशव ॥८-४५-६६॥
codayāśvānhṛṣīkeśa vigāhyaitaṃ rathārṇavam। ajātaśatruṃ rājānaṃ draṣṭumicchāmi keśava ॥8-45-66॥
[चोदय (codaya) - urge; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; हृषीकेश (hṛṣīkeśa) - O Hrishikesha; विगाह्य (vigāhya) - having entered; एतं (etaṃ) - this; रथ (ratha) - chariot; अर्णवम् (arṇavam) - ocean; अजातशत्रुं (ajātaśatruṃ) - Ajatashatru; राजानं (rājānaṃ) - king; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; केशव (keśava) - O Keshava;]
(Urge the horses, O Hrishikesha, having entered this chariot-ocean. I wish to see King Ajatashatru, O Keshava.)
"O Hrishikesha, drive the horses into this ocean of chariots. I desire to see King Ajatashatru, O Keshava."
ततो हयान्सर्वदाशार्हमुख्यः; प्राचोदयद्भीममुवाच चेदम्। नैतच्चित्रं तव कर्माद्य वीर; यास्यामहे जहि भीमारिसङ्घान् ॥८-४५-६७॥
tato hayānsarvadāśārhamukhyaḥ; prācodayadbhīmamuvāca cedam। naitaccitraṃ tava karmādya vīra; yāsyāmahe jahi bhīmārisaṅghān ॥8-45-67॥

(Then, the chief worthy of respect always urged the horses and said to Bhima: "This is not surprising, your deed today, hero; we shall go and conquer the enemy groups, Bhima.")

(Then, having gone, the two mighty men, having reached the king lying alone, both descended from the chariot and bowed to the feet of the king of dharma.)

(Having seen those two tigers among men, safe, O bull among men, they approached Krishna with joy, like the Ashvins approach Indra.)

(The king indeed welcomed those two, Vivasvan like the Ashvins, as the teacher (welcomed) Indra and Vishnu, when the great demon Jambha was slain.)
