अग्रगं धार्तराष्ट्राणां सर्वेषां शर्म वर्म च। रक्षितं वृषसेनेन सुषेणेन च धन्विना ॥८-४६-५॥

एताञ्जित्वा महावीर्यान्कर्णः शत्रुगणान्बहून्। जितवान्मां महाबाहो यतमानं महारणे ॥८-४६-१३॥

trayodaśāhaṃ varṣāṇi yasmādbhīto dhanañjaya। na sma nidrāṃ labhe rātrau na cāhani sukhaṃ kvacit ॥8-46-16॥
[त्रयोदश (trayodaśa) - thirteen; अहम् (aham) - I; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - afraid; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya; न (na) - not; स्म (sma) - indeed; निद्रां (nidrāṃ) - sleep; लभे (labhe) - obtain; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अहनि (ahani) - during the day; सुखं (sukhaṃ) - happiness; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere;]
(For thirteen years, O Dhananjaya, because I was afraid, I indeed did not obtain sleep at night, nor happiness during the day anywhere.)

(In whom this time has come, of thinking, my Lord, how can Karṇa be destroyed by me in battle?)
O Lord, as I ponder over the time that has come, how can I possibly defeat Karṇa in battle?
जाग्रत्स्वपंश्च कौन्तेय कर्णमेव सदा ह्यहम्। पश्यामि तत्र तत्रैव कर्णभूतमिदं जगत् ॥८-४६-१९॥
jāgratsvapaṃśca kaunteya karṇameva sadā hyaham। paśyāmi tatra tatraiva karṇabhūtamidaṃ jagat ॥8-46-19॥

(Awake and dreaming, O son of Kunti, I always indeed see only Karna. There and there only, this world is in the form of Karna.)
