śrutvā karṇaṃ kalyamudāravīryaṃ; kruddhaḥ pārthaḥ phalgunasyāmitaujāḥ। dhanañjayaṃ vākyamuvāca cedaṃ; yudhiṣṭhiraḥ karṇaśarābhitaptaḥ ॥8-48-1॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna; कल्यम् (kalyam) - early in the morning; उदारवीर्यम् (udāravīryam) - of noble prowess; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - son of Pritha; फल्गुनस्य (phalgunasya) - of Arjuna; अमितौजाः (amitaujāḥ) - of immense energy; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - to Dhananjaya; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; उवाच (uvāca) - said; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; कर्णशराभितप्तः (karṇaśarābhitaptaḥ) - afflicted by Karna's arrows;]
(Having heard of Karna's noble prowess early in the morning, the angry son of Pritha, Arjuna of immense energy, said these words to Dhananjaya, Yudhishthira, afflicted by Karna's arrows.)

इदं यदि द्वैतवने ह्यवक्ष्यः; कर्णं योद्धुं न प्रसहे नृपेति। वयं तदा प्राप्तकालानि सर्वे; वृत्तान्युपैष्याम तदैव पार्थ ॥८-४८-२॥
idaṁ yadi dvaitavane hyavakṣyaḥ; karṇaṁ yoddhuṁ na prasahe nṛpeti। vayaṁ tadā prāptakālāni sarve; vṛttānyupaiṣyāma tadaiva pārtha ॥8-48-2॥
[इदं (idaṁ) - this; यदि (yadi) - if; द्वैतवने (dvaitavane) - in the forest of Dvaita; हि (hi) - indeed; अवक्ष्यः (avakṣyaḥ) - you will say; कर्णं (karṇam) - Karna; योद्धुं (yoddhum) - to fight; न (na) - not; प्रसहे (prasahe) - able; नृपेति (nṛpeti) - O king; वयं (vayaṁ) - we; तदा (tadā) - then; प्राप्तकालानि (prāptakālāni) - appropriate times; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वृत्तानि (vṛttāni) - events; उपैष्याम (upaiṣyāma) - we will approach; तदैव (tadaiva) - at that time; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Partha;]
(This, if in the forest of Dvaita indeed you will say, 'Karna is not able to fight, O king,' we then at appropriate times all events will approach at that time, O Partha.)

मयि प्रतिश्रुत्य वधं हि तस्य; बलस्य चाप्तस्य तथैव वीर। आनीय नः शत्रुमध्यं स कस्मा; त्समुत्क्षिप्य स्थण्डिले प्रत्यपिंष्ठाः ॥८-४८-३॥

(Having promised me the killing of him, and having acquired the strength, O hero, why did he bring us into the midst of enemies, lift us up, and throw us down on the ground?)

अन्वाशिष्म वयमर्जुन त्वयि; यियासवो बहु कल्याणमिष्टम्। तन्नः सर्वं विफलं राजपुत्र; फलार्थिनां निचुल इवातिपुष्पः ॥८-४८-४॥

[अन्वाशिष्म (anvāśiṣma) - we desired; वयम् (vayam) - we; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; यियासवः (yiyāsavaḥ) - wishing to go; बहु (bahu) - much; कल्याणम् (kalyāṇam) - auspicious; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - desired; तत् (tat) - that; नः (naḥ) - our; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; विफलम् (viphalam) - fruitless; राजपुत्र (rājaputra) - O prince; फलार्थिनाम् (phalārthinām) - of those desiring fruit; निचुलः (niculaḥ) - Nicula tree; इव (iva) - like; अतिपुष्पः (atipuṣpaḥ) - over-flowering;]
(We desired, O Arjuna, in you; wishing to go, much auspicious desired. That all of ours is fruitless, O prince; like the Nicula tree over-flowering for those desiring fruit.)
We had placed our hopes in you, Arjuna, wishing for much auspiciousness. But all of that has become fruitless for us, O prince, like the Nicula tree that blooms excessively but bears no fruit for those who desire it.
प्रच्छादितं बडिशमिवामिषेण; प्रच्छादितो गवय इवापवाचा। अनर्थकं मे दर्शितवानसि त्वं; राज्यार्थिनो राज्यरूपं विनाशम् ॥८-४८-५॥
pracchāditaṃ baḍiśam ivāmiṣeṇa; pracchādito gavaya ivāpavācā। anarthakaṃ me darśitavān asi tvaṃ; rājyārthino rājyarūpaṃ vināśam ॥8-48-5॥
[प्रच्छादितं (pracchāditaṃ) - covered; बडिशम् (baḍiśam) - hook; इव (iva) - like; अमिषेण (amiṣeṇa) - with bait; प्रच्छादितः (pracchāditaḥ) - covered; गवयः (gavayaḥ) - ox; इव (iva) - like; अपवाचा (apavācā) - with a trap; अनर्थकम् (anarthakam) - useless; मे (me) - to me; दर्शितवान् (darśitavān) - shown; असि (asi) - you are; त्वम् (tvam) - you; राज्यार्थिनः (rājyārthinaḥ) - of the seeker of kingdom; राज्यरूपम् (rājyarūpam) - form of kingdom; विनाशम् (vināśam) - destruction;]
(Covered like a hook with bait; covered like an ox with a trap. You have shown me the useless destruction of the form of kingdom of the seeker of kingdom.)
"You have shown me how the pursuit of a kingdom is like a hook covered with bait or an ox covered with a trap, leading only to useless destruction."
यत्तत्पृथां वागुवाचान्तरिक्षे; सप्ताहजाते त्वयि मन्दबुद्धौ। जातः पुत्रो वासवविक्रमोऽयं; सर्वाञ्शूराञ्शात्रवाञ्जेष्यतीति ॥८-४८-६॥
yattatpṛthāṃ vāguvācāntarikṣe; saptāhajāte tvayi mandabuddhau। jātaḥ putro vāsavavikramo'yaṃ; sarvāñśūrāñśātravāñjeṣyatīti ॥8-48-6॥
[यत् (yat) - that; तत् (tat) - that; पृथाम् (pṛthām) - to Pṛthā; वाक् (vāk) - speech; उवाच (uvāca) - said; अन्तरिक्षे (antarikṣe) - in the sky; सप्ताहजाते (saptāhajāte) - born in seven days; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; मन्दबुद्धौ (mandabuddhau) - slow-witted; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; वासवविक्रमः (vāsavavikramaḥ) - with the prowess of Indra; अयम् (ayam) - this; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; शूरान् (śūrān) - heroes; शात्रवान् (śātravān) - enemies; जेष्यति (jeṣyati) - will conquer; इति (iti) - thus;]
(That speech was said to Pṛthā in the sky: "In you, slow-witted, a son born in seven days, this one with the prowess of Indra, will conquer all heroes and enemies.")

अयं जेता खाण्डवे देवसङ्घा; न्सर्वाणि भूतान्यपि चोत्तमौजाः। अयं जेता मद्रकलिङ्गकेकया; नयं कुरून्हन्ति च राजमध्ये ॥८-४८-७॥

(By the luster of the moon, by the speed of the wind; by the steadiness of the Meru mountain, by the patience of the earth. By the brilliance of the sun, by the wealth of Kubera; by the heroism of Indra, by the strength of Vishnu.)

(Thus, in the sky on the peak of Shatashringa, the speech said to the listening ascetics: "Such a thing was not yours today; indeed, the gods certainly speak falsehood.")

[तथा (tathā) - thus; अपरेषाम् (apareṣām) - of others; ऋषि (ṛṣi) - sages; सत्तमानाम् (sattamānām) - best; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; गिरम् (giram) - speech; पूजयताम् (pūjayatām) - of those who worship; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; न (na) - not; संनतिम् (saṃnatim) - respect; प्रैमि (praimi) - I accept; सुयोधनस्य (suyodhanasya) - of Suyodhana; न (na) - not; त्वा (tvā) - you; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; अधिरथेर् (adhirather) - of Adhiratha; भयार्तम् (bhayārtam) - afflicted by fear;]
(Thus, having heard the speech of the best sages of others, I do not accept the respect of Suyodhana; nor do I know you, afflicted by fear, of Adhiratha.)

त्वष्ट्रा कृतं वाहमकूजनाक्षं; शुभं समास्थाय कपिध्वजं त्वम्। खड्गं गृहीत्वा हेमचित्रं समिद्धं; धनुश्चेदं गाण्डिवं तालमात्रम् ॥ स केशवेनोह्यमानः कथं नु; कर्णाद्भीतो व्यपयातोऽसि पार्थ ॥८-४८-१३॥
tvaṣṭrā kṛtaṃ vāhamakūjanākṣaṃ; śubhaṃ samāsthāya kapidhvajaṃ tvam। khaḍgaṃ gṛhītvā hemacitraṃ samiddhaṃ; dhanuścedaṃ gāṇḍivaṃ tālamātram ॥ sa keśavenohyāmānaḥ kathaṃ nu; karṇādbhīto vyapayāto'si pārtha ॥8-48-13॥

(Having mounted the auspicious vehicle made by Tvaṣṭṛ with unblinking eyes, you, with a monkey banner, having taken the golden adorned, kindled sword and this bow Gandiva as tall as a palm tree, how indeed, being carried by Keshava, have you retreated from Karna, afraid, O Partha?)
You, mounted on the auspicious vehicle crafted by Tvaṣṭṛ, with unblinking eyes and a monkey banner, wielding the golden adorned, kindled sword and the tall Gandiva bow, how could you, being carried by Keshava, retreat from Karna in fear, O Partha?
धनुश्चैतत्केशवाय प्रदाय; यन्ताभविष्यस्त्वं रणे चेद्दुरात्मन्। ततोऽहनिष्यत्केशवः कर्णमुग्रं; मरुत्पतिर्वृत्रमिवात्तवज्रः ॥८-४८-१४॥
dhanuścaitatkeśavāya pradāya; yantābhaviṣyastvaṃ raṇe ceddurātman। tato'haniṣyatkeśavaḥ karṇamugraṃ; marutpatirvṛtramivāttavajraḥ ॥8-48-14॥
[धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; केशवाय (keśavāya) - to Keshava; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; यन्ता (yantā) - charioteer; भविष्यः (bhaviṣyaḥ) - will become; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; चेत् (ced) - if; दुरात्मन् (durātman) - wicked one; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहनिष्यत् (ahaniṣyat) - would kill; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keshava; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna; उग्रम् (ugram) - fierce; मरुत्पतिः (marutpatiḥ) - the lord of the winds; वृत्रम् (vṛtram) - Vritra; इव (iva) - like; आत्तवज्रः (āttavajraḥ) - with raised thunderbolt;]
(Having given this bow to Keshava, you would become the charioteer in battle, O wicked one. Then Keshava would kill fierce Karna, like the lord of the winds killed Vritra with a raised thunderbolt.)

māse'patiṣyaḥ pañcame tvaṃ prakṛcchre; na vā garbho'pyabhaviṣyaḥ pṛthāyāḥ। tatte śramo rājaputrābhaviṣya; nna saṅgrāmādapayātuṃ durātman ॥8-48-15॥

(In the fifth month, you would have fallen into difficulty; or the embryo of Pṛthā would not have existed. That effort of yours, prince, would not have been to retreat from battle, wicked one.)
