Core and Pancharatra: Yudhishthira asks the hiding Duryodhana to leave cowardice and fight; but Duryodhana want's to gift the kingdom to the Pandavas and wants to retire himself to the forest.
sañjaya uvāca॥
Sanjaya said:
tatasteṣvapayāteṣu ratheṣu triṣu pāṇḍavāḥ। taṃ hradaṃ pratyapadyanta yatra duryodhano'bhavat ॥9-30-1॥
After the three chariots had left, the Pāṇḍavas went to the lake where Duryodhana was present.
āsādya ca kuruśreṣṭha tadā dvaipāyanahradam। stambhitaṃ dhārtarāṣṭreṇa dṛṣṭvā taṃ salilāśayam ॥ vāsudevamidaṃ vākyamabravītkurunandanaḥ ॥9-30-2॥
Upon reaching the Dvaipayana lake, which was blocked by Dhritarashtra's son, the best of the Kurus, having seen the reservoir, spoke this to Vasudeva: "O descendant of Kuru, here is what was said:"
paśyemāṃ dhārtarāṣṭreṇa māyāmapsu prayojitām। viṣṭabhya salilaṃ śete nāsya mānuṣato bhayam ॥9-30-3॥
Observe this illusion created in the water by Dhritarashtra's son. He lies in the water, having pervaded it, without any fear from humans.
daivīṃ māyām imāṃ kṛtvā salilāntargato hy ayam। nikṛtyā nikṛtiprajño na me jīvan vimokṣyate ॥9-30-4॥
Having created this divine illusion, he has entered the water. By deceit, the one wise in deceit will not be released alive by me.
yadyasya samare sāhyaṃ kurute vajrabhṛtsvayam। tathāpyenaṃ hataṃ yuddhe loko drakṣyati mādhava ॥9-30-5॥
O Mādhava, even if Indra himself assists in the battle, the world will still witness his defeat.
śrīvāsudeva uvāca॥
Revered Vasudeva said:
māyāvina imāṃ māyāṃ māyayā jahi bhārata। māyāvī māyayā vadhyaḥ satyam etad yudhiṣṭhira ॥9-30-6॥
O descendant of Bharata, use illusion to conquer the deceiver's illusion. Indeed, the deceiver can only be defeated by illusion. This is the truth, Yudhishthira.
kriyābhyupāyairbahulairmāyāmapsu prayojya ha। jahi tvaṃ bharataśreṣṭha pāpātmānaṃ suyodhanam ॥9-30-7॥
O best of the Bharatas, by employing various strategies and illusions in water, you must indeed destroy the sinful Suyodhana.
kriyābhyupāyairindreṇa nihatā daityadānavāḥ। kriyābhyupāyairbahubhirbalirbaddho mahātmanā ॥9-30-8॥
Through strategic actions, Indra defeated the demons and Danavas. Similarly, Bali was captured by the great soul through various means.
kriyābhyupāyaiḥ pūrvaṃ hi hiraṇyākṣo mahāsuraḥ। hiraṇyakaśipuścaiva kriyayāiva niṣūditau ॥ vṛtraśca nihato rājankriyayāiva na saṃśayaḥ ॥9-30-9॥
Indeed, by means of action, the great demon Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu were destroyed. Vritra was also killed by action, O king, without a doubt.
tathā paulastyatanayo rāvaṇo nāma rākṣasaḥ। rāmeṇa nihato rājansānubandhaḥ sahānugaḥ ॥ kriyayā yogamāsthāya tathā tvamapi vikrama ॥9-30-10॥
Thus, O king, Ravana, the demon son of Pulastya, was slain by Rama along with his followers and retinue. You too, by resorting to yoga through action, should exhibit valor.
kriyābhyupāyairnihato mayā rājanpurātane। tārakaśca mahādaityo vipracittiśca vīryavān ॥9-30-11॥
In ancient times, by means of action, I, O King, killed the great demon Tāraka and the powerful Vipracitti.
vātāpirilvalaścaiva triśirāśca tathā vibho। sundopasundāvasurau kriyayai'va niṣūditau ॥9-30-12॥
O lord, Vātāpi, Ilvala, Triśiras, as well as the demons Sunda and Upasunda, were destroyed by their own actions.
kriyābhyupāyairindreṇa tridivaṃ bhujyate vibho। kriyā balavatī rājannānyatkiñcidyudhiṣṭhira ॥9-30-13॥
O lord, heaven is enjoyed by Indra through actions. Action is powerful, O King Yudhishthira, and nothing else matters.
daityāśca dānavāścaiva rākṣasāḥ pārthivāstathā। kriyābhyupāyairnihatāḥ kriyāṃ tasmātsamācara ॥9-30-14॥
Demons, Danavas, Rakshasas, and earthly kings were defeated through strategic actions; therefore, you should also act accordingly.
sañjaya uvāca॥
Sanjaya said:
ityukto vāsudevena pāṇḍavaḥ saṃśitavrataḥ। jalasthaṃ taṃ mahārāja tava putraṃ mahābalam॥ abhyabhāṣata kaunteyaḥ prahasanniva bhārata॥9-30-15॥
Upon being addressed by Vāsudeva, the resolute Pāṇḍava spoke to your powerful son, who was in the water, with a smile, O great king, descendant of Bharata.
suyodhana kimartho'yamārambho'psu kṛtastvayā। sarvaṃ kṣatraṃ ghātayitvā svakulaṃ ca viśāṃ pate ॥9-30-16॥
Suyodhana, why have you initiated this endeavor in the waters? After destroying all the kṣatriyas and your own family, O lord of the people.
jalāśayaṃ praviṣṭo'dya vāñchañjīvitamātmanaḥ। uttiṣṭha rājanyudhyasva sahāsmābhiḥ suyodhana ॥9-30-17॥
Today, having entered the water reservoir seeking to save his own life, arise, O King, and fight alongside us, Suyodhana.
sa ca darpo naraśreṣṭha sa ca mānaḥ kva te gataḥ। yastvaṃ saṃstabhya salilaṃ bhīto rājanvyavasthitaḥ ॥9-30-18॥
O best of men, where has your pride and honor gone? You stand fearful, holding back water, O king.
sarve tvāṃ śūra ityeva janā jalpanti saṃsadi। vyarthaṃ tadbhavato manye śauryaṃ salilaśāyinaḥ ॥9-30-19॥
In the assembly, everyone talks of you as a hero, but I believe that your valor is as useless as that of someone lying on water.
uttiṣṭha rājanyudhyasva kṣatriyo'si kulodbhavaḥ। kauraveyo viśeṣeṇa kule janma ca saṃsmara ॥9-30-20॥
Arise, O king, and fight, for you are a warrior born of a noble lineage. Remember your birth in the Kuru family, especially.
sa kathaṁ kaurave vaṁśe praśaṁsañjanma cātmanaḥ। yuddhādbhītastatastoyaṁ praviśya pratitiṣṭhasi ॥9-30-21॥
He, while praising his own birth in the Kaurava dynasty, afraid of the battle, then enters the water and stands firm.
ayuddhamavyavasthānaṃ naiṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ। anāryajuṣṭamasvargyaṃ raṇe rājanpalāyanam ॥9-30-22॥
"O king, non-fighting and disorder are not the eternal duty; fleeing in battle is considered unworthy of the noble and does not lead to heaven."
kathaṁ pāramagatvā hi yuddhe tvaṁ vai jijīviṣuḥ। imān nipatitān dṛṣṭvā putrān bhrātṝn pitṝṁs tathā ॥9-30-23॥
How can you, having reached the other shore of battle, still desire to live after seeing these fallen sons, brothers, and fathers?
sambandhino vayasyāṃśca mātulān bāndhavāṃs tathā। ghātayitvā kathaṃ tāta hrade tiṣṭhasi sāmpratam ॥9-30-24॥
Dear father, after having killed your relatives, friends, uncles, and kinsmen, how can you stand in the lake now?
śūramānī na śūrastvaṃ mithyā vadasi bhārata। śūro'hamiti durbuddhe sarvalokasya śṛṇvataḥ ॥9-30-25॥
"You, who think yourself a hero, are not truly a hero, O descendant of Bharata. You speak falsely. O fool, I am the hero, as all the people hear."
na hi śūrāḥ palāyante śatrūndṛṣṭvā kathañcana। brūhi vā tvaṃ yayā dhṛtyā śūra tyajasi saṅgaram ॥9-30-26॥
Heroes never flee upon seeing their enemies. Tell me, by what determination do you, a hero, abandon the battle?
sa tvamuttiṣṭha yudhyasva vinīya bhayamātmanaḥ। ghātayitvā sarvasainyaṃ bhrātṝṃścaiva suyodhana ॥9-30-27॥
Arise, O Suyodhana, and fight without fear. Defeat the entire army and your brothers.
nedānīṃ jīvite buddhiḥ kāryā dharmacikīrṣayā। kṣatradharmamapāśritya tvadvidhena suyodhana ॥9-30-28॥
Now, Suyodhana, one should use intelligence in life with the desire to perform one's duty, adhering to the warrior's duty as someone like you would.
yattatkarṇamupāśritya śakuniṃ cāpi saubalam। amartya iva saṃmohāttvamātmānaṃ na buddhavān ॥9-30-29॥
Relying on Karna and Shakuni, the son of Subala, you were deluded like an immortal and failed to recognize yourself.
tatpāpaṃ sumahatkṛtvā pratiyudhyasva bhārata। kathaṃ hi tvadvidho mohādrocayet palāyanam ॥9-30-30॥
Having committed such a great sin, stand up and fight, O Bharata. How could someone like you, in delusion, choose to flee?
kva te tatpauruṣaṃ yātaṃ kva ca mānaḥ suyodhana। kva ca vikrāntatā yātā kva ca visphūrjitaṃ mahat ॥9-30-31॥
Where has your valor and pride gone, Suyodhana? Where is your bravery and great splendor now?
kva te kṛtāstratā yātā kiṃ ca śeṣe jalāśaye। sa tvamuttiṣṭha yudhyasva kṣatradharmeṇa bhārata ॥9-30-32॥
"Where has your skill in arms gone, and what remains in the water? Arise and fight according to the duty of a warrior, O Bharata."
asmānvā tvaṃ parājitya praśādhi pṛthivīmimām। atha vā nihato'smābhirbhūmau svapsyasi bhārata ॥9-30-33॥
"O Bharata, either you will conquer us and rule this earth, or you will be slain by us and sleep on the ground."
eṣa te prathamo dharmaḥ sṛṣṭo dhātrā mahātmanā। taṃ kuruṣva yathātathyaṃ rājā bhava mahāratha ॥9-30-34॥
This is your foremost duty, established by the creator, the great soul. Fulfill it as it is, and become a king and a great charioteer.
duryodhana uvāca॥
Duryodhana said:
naitac citraṁ mahārāja yad bhīḥ prāṇinam āviśet। na ca prāṇabhayād bhīto vyapayāto'smi bhārata ॥9-30-35॥
It is not surprising, O great king, that fear can enter any living being. However, I have not fled out of fear for my life, O descendant of Bharata.
arathaś cāniṣaṅgī ca nihataḥ pārṣṇisārathiḥ। ekaś cāpy agaṇaḥ saṅkhye pratyāśvāsamarocayam ॥9-30-36॥
The charioteer was killed, leaving me without a chariot and quiver. Alone and without a troop, I found reassurance in the midst of battle.
na prāṇahetor na bhayān na viṣādād viśāṁ pate। idam ambhaḥ praviṣṭo'smi śramāt tv idam anuṣṭhitam ॥9-30-37॥
O lord of the people, I have entered this water not for the sake of life, nor out of fear or despair. It is merely out of fatigue that I have done this.
tvaṁ cāśvasihi kaunteya ye cāpyanugatāstava। ahamutthāya vaḥ sarvānpratiyotsyāmi saṁyuge ॥9-30-38॥
"O son of Kunti, be reassured along with your followers. I will rise and fight back against all in the battle."
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca॥
Yudhishthira spoke:
āśvastā eva sarve sma ciraṃ tvāṃ mṛgayāmahe। tadidānīṃ samuttiṣṭha yudhyasveha suyodhana ॥9-30-39॥
"We were all reassured and have been searching for you for a long time. Now, Suyodhana, arise here and fight."
hatvā vā samare pārthānsphītaṃ rājyamavāpnuhi। nihato vā raṇe'smābhirvīralokamavāpsyasi ॥9-30-40॥
If you kill the sons of Pritha in battle, you will gain a prosperous kingdom; or if you are killed by us in battle, you will reach the world of heroes.
duryodhana uvāca॥
Duryodhana said:
yadarthaṃ rājyamicchāmi kurūṇāṃ kurunandana। ta ime nihatāḥ sarve bhrātaro me janeśvara ॥9-30-41॥
O joy of the Kurus, for the sake of which I desired the kingdom, all my brothers, O lord of the people, are now slain.
kṣīṇaratnāṃ ca pṛthivīṃ hatakṣatriyapuṅgavām। nābhyutsahāmyahaṃ bhoktuṃ vidhavāmiva yoṣitam ॥9-30-42॥
I do not wish to enjoy the earth, which is like a widow, depleted of its treasures and bereft of its great warriors.
adyāpi tvahamāśaṁse tvāṁ vijetuṁ yudhiṣṭhira। bhaṅktvā pāñcālapāṇḍūnāmut sāhaṁ bharatarṣabha ॥9-30-43॥
Even today, I aspire to defeat you, Yudhishthira, by shattering the spirit of the Panchalas and the Pandavas, O noble one of the Bharatas.
na tvidānīmahaṃ manye kāryaṃ yuddhena karhicit। droṇe karṇe ca saṃśānte nihate ca pitāmahe ॥9-30-44॥
"But now, I believe there is no longer any duty to fight, as Drona and Karna have been pacified and the grandfather has been slain."
astvidānīmiyaṃ rājankevalā pṛthivī tava। asahāyo hi ko rājā rājyamicchetpraśāsitum ॥9-30-45॥
"Now, O king, let this earth be yours alone. For who would wish to govern a kingdom without assistance?"
suhṛdastādṛśānhitvā putrānbhrātṝnpitṝnapi। bhavadbhiśca hṛte rājye ko nu jīveta mādṛśaḥ ॥9-30-46॥
"Having abandoned such friends, sons, brothers, and even fathers, and with the kingdom taken away by you, who indeed would live like me?" This reflects a deep sense of loss and despair, questioning the possibility of survival under such circumstances.
ahaṁ vanaṁ gamiṣyāmi hyajinaiḥ prativāsitaḥ। ratirhi nāsti me rājye hatapakṣasya bhārata ॥9-30-47॥
I will go to the forest wearing deer skins, as I find no pleasure in ruling the kingdom, O Bhārata, when my wings are clipped.
hatabāndhavabhūyiṣṭhā hatāśvā hatakuñjarā। eṣā te pṛthivī rājanbhuṅkṣvaināṃ vigatajvaraḥ ॥9-30-48॥
O king, most of your relatives, horses, and elephants have been killed. Now, this earth is yours to enjoy without any distress.
vanameva gamiṣyāmi vasāno mṛgacaramaṇī। na hi me nirjitasyaasti jīvite'dya spṛhā vibho ॥9-30-49॥
I shall retreat to the forest, clad in deer skin, for today, O lord, I have no desire left in this life, having been defeated.
gaccha tvaṁ bhuṅkṣva rājendra pṛthivīṁ nihateśvarām। hatayodhāṁ naṣṭaratnāṁ kṣīṇavaprāṁ yathāsukham ॥9-30-50॥
"O King, go and enjoy the earth, which is now without its lords and warriors, stripped of its treasures and with its defenses weakened, at your leisure."
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca॥
Yudhishthira said:
ārtapralāpānmā tāta salilasthaḥ prabhāṣathāḥ। naitanmanasi me rājanvāśitaṃ śakuneriva ॥9-30-51॥
"Dear, do not speak from a place of distress while you stand in the water. Such words are not what I desire, O king, as they resemble the cries of a bird."
yadi cāpi samarthaḥ syāstvaṃ dānāya suyodhana। nāhamiccheyamavaniṃ tvayā dattāṃ praśāsitum ॥9-30-52॥
If you, Suyodhana, are indeed capable of giving, I would not wish to rule the earth that you have given.
adharmeṇa na gṛhṇīyāṃ tvayā dattāṃ mahīmimām। na hi dharmaḥ smṛto rājankṣatriyasya pratigrahaḥ ॥9-30-53॥
"I will not accept this land given by you through unrighteous means. For a Kshatriya, acceptance is not considered righteous, O king."
tvayā dattāṃ na ceccheyaṃ pṛthivīmakhilāmaham। tvāṃ tu yuddhe vinirjitya bhoktāsmi vasudhāmimām ॥9-30-54॥
If you do not give me this entire earth, I will conquer you in battle and enjoy this land.
anīśvaraśca pṛthivīṃ kathaṃ tvaṃ dātumicchasi। tvayeyam pṛthivī rājankiṃ na dattā tadaiva hi ॥9-30-55॥
"O king, without a lord, how do you intend to give the earth? Why was this earth not given by you then itself?"
dharmato yācamānānāṃ śamārthaṃ ca kulasya naḥ। vārṣṇeyaṃ prathamaṃ rājanpratyākhyāya mahābalam ॥9-30-56॥
For the sake of righteousness and peace, and for the honor of our family, O king, we first rejected the mighty Vārṣṇeya.
kimidānīṃ dadāsi tvaṃ ko hi te cittavibhramaḥ। abhiyuktastu ko rājā dātumicched dhi medinīm ॥9-30-57॥
"What are you giving now, and who indeed is causing your mental confusion? But who is the king accused of wishing to give away the earth?"
na tvamadya mahīṁ dātumīśaḥ kauravanandana। ācchettuṁ vā balādrājansa kathaṁ dātumicchasi ॥ māṁ tu nirjitya saṅgrāme pālayemāṁ vasundharām ॥9-30-58॥
O joy of the Kauravas, today you are not capable of giving the earth, nor of taking it away by force, O king. How do you wish to give it? But if you conquer me in battle, then I shall protect this earth.
sūcyagreṇāpi yadbhūmerapi dhrīyeta bhārata। tanmātramapi no mahyaṃ na dadāti purā bhavān ॥9-30-59॥
O Bhārata, you did not give me even the smallest amount of land that could be held by the tip of a needle in the past.
sa kathaṁ pṛthivīmetāṁ pradadāsi viśāṁ pate। sūcyagraṁ nātyajaḥ pūrvaṁ sa kathaṁ tyajasi kṣitim ॥9-30-60॥
How do you, O lord of the people, give away this earth? You did not abandon even a needle's point before, so how do you abandon the earth now?
evamaiśvaryamāsādya praśāsya pṛthivīmimām। ko hi mūḍho vyavasyeta śatrordātuṃ vasundharām ॥9-30-61॥
Having attained such sovereignty and ruled this earth, who would be foolish enough to decide to hand over the earth to the enemy?
tvaṁ tu kevalamaurkhyēṇa vimūḍhō nāvabudhyasē. pṛthivīṁ dātukāmō'pi jīvitēnādyamōkṣyasē ॥9-30-62॥
But you, in your sheer foolishness, are deluded and do not understand. Even though you wish to give away the earth, today you will lose your life.
asmānvā tvaṃ parājitya praśādhi pṛthivīmimām। atha vā nihato'smābhirvraja lokānanuttamān ॥9-30-63॥
You may either conquer us and rule this earth, or if you are killed by us, you will attain the supreme worlds.
āvayorjīvato rājanmayi ca tvayi ca dhruvam। saṃśayaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ vijaye no bhaviṣyati ॥9-30-64॥
O King, as long as both of us are alive, there will certainly be doubt among all beings about our victory.
jīvitaṁ tava duṣprajña mayi samprati vartate। jīvayeyaṁ tvahaṁ kāmaṁ na tu tvaṁ jīvituṁ kṣamaḥ ॥9-30-65॥
"Foolish one, your life is now in my hands. I could willingly keep you alive, but you are not capable of surviving on your own."
dahane hi kṛto yatnastvayāsmāsu viśeṣataḥ। āśīviṣairviṣaiścāpi jale cāpi praveśanaiḥ॥
You made a special effort to harm us, especially by burning, using serpents, poisons, and immersing us in water.
etasmātkāraṇātpāpa jīvitaṃ te na vidyate। uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha yudhyasva tatte śreyo bhaviṣyati ॥9-30-67॥
Because of this reason, a sinful life does not exist for you. Arise and fight, for that will lead to your welfare.
sañjaya uvāca॥
Sanjaya said:
evaṁ tu vividhā vāco jayayuktāḥ punaḥ punaḥ। kīrtayanti sma te vīrāstatra tatra janādhipa ॥9-30-68॥
Thus, O ruler of people, those heroes repeatedly praised various victorious words in different places.
