Pancharatra and Core: Signalled by Arjuna, Bhima breaks the thigh of Duryodhana.

समुदीर्णं ततो दृष्ट्वा सङ्ग्रामं कुरुमुख्ययोः। अथाब्रवीदर्जुनस्तु वासुदेवं यशस्विनम् ॥९-५७-१॥
samudīrṇaṃ tato dṛṣṭvā saṅgrāmaṃ kurumukhyayoḥ। athābravīdarjunastu vāsudevaṃ yaśasvinam ॥9-57-1॥
[समुदीर्णम् (samudīrṇam) - arisen; ततः (tataḥ) - then; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; सङ्ग्रामम् (saṅgrāmam) - battle; कुरुमुख्ययोः (kurumukhyayoḥ) - of the Kuru chiefs; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तु (tu) - but; वासुदेवम् (vāsudevam) - to Vasudeva; यशस्विनम् (yaśasvinam) - glorious;]
(Then, seeing the battle arisen of the Kuru chiefs, Arjuna said to the glorious Vasudeva.)
Upon witnessing the battle that had arisen among the chief Kurus, Arjuna addressed the illustrious Vasudeva.
अनयोर्वीरयोर्युद्धे को ज्यायान्भवतो मतः। कस्य वा को गुणो भूयानेतद्वद जनार्दन ॥९-५७-२॥
anayorvīrayoryuddhe ko jyāyānbhavato mataḥ। kasya vā ko guṇo bhūyānetadvada janārdana ॥9-57-2॥

(Of these two heroes, who is greater in battle according to you? Or whose quality is more? Tell this, O Janardana.)
O Janardana, tell me who you consider greater in battle between these two heroes, or whose qualities are superior.

उपदेशोऽनयोस्तुल्यो भीमस्तु बलवत्तरः। कृतयत्नतरस्त्वेष धार्तराष्ट्रो वृकोदरात् ॥९-५७-३॥
upadeśo'nayostulyo bhīmastu balavattaraḥ। kṛtayatnatarastveṣa dhārtarāṣṭro vṛkodarāt ॥9-57-3॥
[उपदेशः (upadeśaḥ) - instruction; अनयोः (anayoḥ) - of these two; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; तु (tu) - but; बलवत्तरः (balavattaraḥ) - stronger; कृतयत्नतरः (kṛtayatnatarah) - more diligent; तु (tu) - but; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra's son; वृकोदरात् (vṛkodarāt) - than Vrikodara;]
(The instruction of these two is equal, but Bhima is stronger. However, this son of Dhritarashtra is more diligent than Vrikodara.)

भीमसेनस्तु धर्मेण युध्यमानो न जेष्यति। अन्यायेन तु युध्यन्वै हन्यादेष सुयोधनम् ॥९-५७-४॥
bhīmasenastu dharmeṇa yudhyamāno na jeṣyati। anyāyena tu yudhyanvai hanyādeṣa suyodhanam ॥9-57-4॥
[भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhimasena; तु (tu) - but; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - with righteousness; युध्यमानः (yudhyamānaḥ) - fighting; न (na) - not; जेष्यति (jeṣyati) - will conquer; अन्यायेन (anyāyena) - with injustice; तु (tu) - but; युध्यन् (yudhyan) - fighting; वै (vai) - indeed; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would kill; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; सुयोधनम् (suyodhanam) - Suyodhana;]
(Bhimasena, fighting with righteousness, will not conquer. But fighting with injustice, indeed, he would kill this Suyodhana.)
Bhimasena, when fighting righteously, will not win. However, if he fights unjustly, he would indeed kill Suyodhana.
मायया निर्जिता देवैरसुरा इति नः श्रुतम्। विरोचनश्च शक्रेण मायया निर्जितः सखे ॥९-५७-५॥
māyayā nirjitā devair asurā iti naḥ śrutam। virocanaś ca śakreṇa māyayā nirjitaḥ sakhe ॥9-57-5॥

(By illusion, the demons were conquered by the gods, thus we have heard. Virocana too was conquered by Shakra through illusion, my friend.)
We have heard that the gods conquered the demons through illusion. Similarly, Virocana was also defeated by Shakra using illusion, my friend.
मायया चाक्षिपत्तेजो वृत्रस्य बलसूदनः ॥९-५७-५॥
māyayā cākṣipattejo vṛtrasya balasūdanaḥ ॥9-57-5॥
[मायया (māyayā) - by illusion; च (ca) - and; अक्षिपत् (ākṣipat) - threw; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; वृत्रस्य (vṛtrasya) - of Vṛtra; बलसूदनः (balasūdanaḥ) - O destroyer of the enemy's strength;]
(By illusion, the energy of Vṛtra was thrown, O destroyer of the enemy's strength.)
By his illusion, Vṛtra's energy was cast aside, O destroyer of the enemy's strength.
प्रतिज्ञातं तु भीमेन द्यूतकाले धनञ्जय। ऊरू भेत्स्यामि ते सङ्ख्ये गदयेति सुयोधनम् ॥९-५७-६॥
pratijñātaṃ tu bhīmena dyūtakāle dhanañjaya। ūrū bhetsyāmi te saṅkhye gadayeti suyodhanam ॥9-57-6॥

(Promised by Bhima at the time of the game, "O Dhananjaya, I will break your thighs in battle with the mace," thus to Suyodhana.)
Bhima promised during the game, "O Dhananjaya, I will break your thighs with my mace in battle," addressing Suyodhana.
सोऽयं प्रतिज्ञां तां चापि पारयित्वारिकर्शनः। मायाविनं च राजानं माययैव निकृन्ततु ॥९-५७-७॥
so'yaṁ pratijñāṁ tāṁ cāpi pārayitvārikarṣaṇaḥ। māyāvinaṁ ca rājānaṁ māyayaiva nikṛntatu ॥9-57-7॥

(He, having fulfilled that vow, Arjuna, should indeed destroy the deceptive king by illusion.)
Arjuna, having fulfilled his vow, should use his own deceptive powers to defeat the deceitful king.
यद्येष बलमास्थाय न्यायेन प्रहरिष्यति। विषमस्थस्ततो राजा भविष्यति युधिष्ठिरः ॥९-५७-८॥
yadyeṣa balamāsthāya nyāyena prahariṣyati। viṣamasthastato rājā bhaviṣyati yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥9-57-8॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; बलम् (balam) - strength; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - relying on; न्यायेन (nyāyena) - justly; प्रहरिष्यति (praharisyati) - will strike; विषमस्थः (viṣamasthaḥ) - in a difficult position; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - king; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(If this one, relying on strength, will strike justly, then King Yudhishthira will become in a difficult position.)
If he relies on his strength and acts justly, then King Yudhishthira will find himself in a difficult situation.
पुनरेव च वक्ष्यामि पाण्डवेदं निबोध मे। धर्मराजापराधेन भयं नः पुनरागतम् ॥९-५७-९॥
punareva ca vakṣyāmi pāṇḍavedaṃ nibodha me। dharmarājāparādhena bhayaṃ naḥ punarāgatam ॥9-57-9॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will speak; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; इदं (idaṃ) - this; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; मे (me) - my; धर्मराज (dharmarāja) - Dharmarāja; अपराधेन (aparādhena) - by the fault; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; नः (naḥ) - our; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आगतम् (āgatam) - has come;]
(Again indeed, I will speak, O Pāṇḍava, understand my words. By the fault of Dharmarāja, fear has come to us again.)
"Once again, I will tell you, O Pāṇḍava, listen to me. Due to Dharmarāja's mistake, fear has returned to us."
कृत्वा हि सुमहत्कर्म हत्वा भीष्ममुखान्कुरून्। जयः प्राप्तो यशश्चाग्र्यं वैरं च प्रतियातितम् ॥ तदेवं विजयः प्राप्तः पुनः संशयितः कृतः ॥९-५७-१०॥
kṛtvā hi sumahatkarma hatvā bhīṣmamukhānkurūn। jayaḥ prāpto yaśaścāgryaṃ vairaṃ ca pratiyātitam ॥ tadevaṃ vijayaḥ prāptaḥ punaḥ saṃśayitaḥ kṛtaḥ ॥9-57-10॥
[कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; हि (hi) - indeed; सुमहत्कर्म (sumahatkarma) - a great deed; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; भीष्ममुखान् (bhīṣmamukhān) - Bhishma and others; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kuru warriors; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; च (ca) - and; अग्र्यम् (agryam) - foremost; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; च (ca) - and; प्रतियातितम् (pratiyātitam) - was removed; तथा (tathā) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - victory; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; संशयितः (saṃśayitaḥ) - doubted; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made;]
(Having indeed performed a great deed and slain Bhishma and the Kuru warriors, victory was attained, foremost fame was achieved, and enmity was removed. Thus, victory was attained but was again doubted.)
After performing a great deed by slaying Bhishma and the Kuru warriors, victory was achieved, bringing foremost fame and removing enmity. However, this victory was again put into doubt.
अबुद्धिरेषा महती धर्मराजस्य पाण्डव। यदेकविजये युद्धं पणितं कृतमीदृशम् ॥ सुयोधनः कृती वीर एकायनगतस्तथा ॥९-५७-११॥
abuddhireṣā mahatī dharmarājasya pāṇḍava। yadekavijaye yuddhaṃ paṇitaṃ kṛtamīdṛśam ॥ suyodhanaḥ kṛtī vīra ekāyanagatastathā ॥9-57-11॥
[अबुद्धिः (abuddhiḥ) - lack of wisdom; एषा (eṣā) - this; महती (mahatī) - great; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmaraja; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pandava; यत् (yat) - that; एकविजये (ekavijaye) - in single victory; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; पणितम् (paṇitam) - wagered; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) - such; सुयोधनः (suyodhanaḥ) - Suyodhana; कृती (kṛtī) - skillful; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; एकायनगतः (ekāyanagataḥ) - single-minded; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(This great lack of wisdom of Dharmaraja, O Pandava, is that such a battle was wagered for a single victory. Suyodhana, the skillful hero, is thus single-minded.)
O Pandava, this is a great lack of wisdom on the part of Dharmaraja, that such a battle was wagered for a single victory. Suyodhana, the skillful hero, remains single-minded in his approach.
अपि चोशनसा गीतः श्रूयतेऽयं पुरातनः। श्लोकस्तत्त्वार्थसहितस्तन्मे निगदतः शृणु ॥९-५७-१२॥
api cośanasā gītaḥ śrūyate'yaṃ purātanaḥ। ślokastattvārthasahitastanme nigadataḥ śṛṇu ॥9-57-12॥

पुनरावर्तमानानां भग्नानां जीवितैषिणाम्। भेतव्यमरिशेषाणामेकायनगता हि ते ॥९-५७-१३॥
punarāvartamānānāṃ bhagnānāṃ jīvitaiṣiṇām। bhetavyamariśeṣāṇāmekāyanagatā hi te ॥9-57-13॥
[पुनरावर्तमानानां (punarāvartamānānāṃ) - of those returning again; भग्नानां (bhagnānāṃ) - of the broken; जीवितैषिणाम् (jīvitaiṣiṇām) - desiring life; भेतव्यम् (bhetavyam) - to be feared; अरिशेषाणाम् (ariśeṣāṇām) - of the remaining enemies; एकायनगता (ekāyanagatā) - gone to one refuge; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - they;]
(Of those returning again, of the broken, desiring life, to be feared are the remaining enemies who have gone to one refuge, indeed they.)
The returning, broken ones who desire life should fear the remaining enemies, for they have indeed gone to one refuge.
सुयोधनमिमं भग्नं हतसैन्यं ह्रदं गतम्। पराजितं वनप्रेप्सुं निराशं राज्यलम्भने ॥९-५७-१४॥
suyodhanam imaṁ bhagnaṁ hatasainyaṁ hradaṁ gatam। parājitaṁ vanaprepsuṁ nirāśaṁ rājyalambhane ॥9-57-14॥
[सुयोधनम् (suyodhanam) - Suyodhana; इमम् (imam) - this; भग्नम् (bhagnam) - broken; हतसैन्यम् (hatasainyam) - with defeated army; ह्रदम् (hradam) - lake; गतम् (gatam) - gone; पराजितम् (parājitam) - defeated; वनप्रेप्सुम् (vanaprepsum) - desiring the forest; निराशम् (nirāśam) - hopeless; राज्यलम्भने (rājyalambhane) - in obtaining the kingdom;]
(Suyodhana, this broken one with a defeated army, gone to the lake, defeated, desiring the forest, hopeless in obtaining the kingdom.)
Suyodhana, broken and with his army defeated, has gone to the lake. He is defeated and desires the forest, hopeless in obtaining the kingdom.
को न्वेष संयुगे प्राज्ञः पुनर्द्वंद्वे समाह्वयेत्। अपि वो निर्जितं राज्यं न हरेत सुयोधनः ॥९-५७-१५॥
ko nveṣa saṃyuge prājñaḥ punardvaṃdve samāhvayet। api vo nirjitaṃ rājyaṃ na haret suyodhanaḥ ॥9-57-15॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - wise; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; द्वंद्वे (dvaṃdve) - in duel; समाह्वयेत् (samāhvayet) - would challenge; अपि (api) - even; वः (vaḥ) - your; निर्जितम् (nirjitam) - conquered; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; न (na) - not; हरेत (haret) - would take away; सुयोधनः (suyodhanaḥ) - Suyodhana;]
(Who indeed, this wise one in battle, would challenge again in duel? Even your conquered kingdom, Suyodhana would not take away.)
Who is the wise person who would challenge again in a duel in battle? Even if your kingdom is conquered, Suyodhana would not take it away.
यस्त्रयोदशवर्षाणि गदया कृतनिश्रमः। चरत्यूर्ध्वं च तिर्यक्च भीमसेनजिघांसया ॥९-५७-१६॥
yastrayo-daśa-varṣāṇi gadayā kṛta-niśramaḥ। caratyūrdhvaṃ ca tiryakca bhīmasena-jighāṃsayā ॥9-57-16॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; त्रयोदश (trayo-daśa) - thirteen; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; गदया (gadayā) - with a mace; कृत (kṛta) - made; निश्रमः (niśramaḥ) - tired; चरति (carati) - moves; ऊर्ध्वं (ūrdhvaṃ) - upwards; च (ca) - and; तिर्यक् (tiryak) - sideways; च (ca) - and; भीमसेन (bhīmasena) - Bhimasena; जिघांसया (jighāṃsayā) - with the intention to kill;]
(Who, for thirteen years, made tired with a mace, moves upwards and sideways with the intention to kill Bhimasena.)
He who, after thirteen years of exhausting practice with the mace, moves both upwards and sideways with the intent to kill Bhimasena.
एवं चेन्न महाबाहुरन्यायेन हनिष्यति। एष वः कौरवो राजा धार्तराष्ट्रो भविष्यति ॥९-५७-१७॥
evaṃ cenna mahābāhuranyāyena haniṣyati। eṣa vaḥ kauravo rājā dhārtarāṣṭro bhaviṣyati ॥9-57-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; चेत् (cet) - if; न (na) - not; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; अन्यायेन (anyāyena) - unjustly; हनिष्यति (haniṣyati) - will kill; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; वः (vaḥ) - your; कौरवः (kauravaḥ) - Kaurava; राजा (rājā) - king; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra's son; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become;]
(Thus, if the mighty-armed does not kill unjustly, this Kaurava king, your Dhritarashtra's son, will become.)
If the mighty-armed one does not act unjustly, then this Kaurava king, your Dhritarashtra's son, will ascend to the throne.
धनञ्जयस्तु श्रुत्वैतत्केशवस्य महात्मनः। प्रेक्षतो भीमसेनस्य हस्तेनोरुमताडयत् ॥९-५७-१८॥
dhanañjayastu śrutvaitatkeśavasya mahātmanaḥ। prekṣato bhīmasenasya hastenorumatāḍayat ॥9-57-18॥
[धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Arjuna; तु (tu) - but; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एतत् (etat) - this; केशवस्य (keśavasya) - of Keshava; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the great soul; प्रेक्षतः (prekṣataḥ) - while watching; भीमसेनस्य (bhīmasenasya) - of Bhimasena; हस्तेन (hastena) - with (his) hand; ऊरुम् (ūrum) - (his) thigh; अताडयत् (atāḍayat) - struck.;]
(Arjuna, having heard this from the great soul Keshava, struck his thigh with his hand while Bhimasena was watching.)
Arjuna, upon hearing these words from the noble Keshava, struck his own thigh with his hand as Bhimasena looked on.
गृह्य सञ्ज्ञां ततो भीमो गदया व्यचरद्रणे। मण्डलानि विचित्राणि यमकानीतराणि च ॥९-५७-१९॥
gṛhya sañjñāṃ tato bhīmo gadayā vyacaradraṇe। maṇḍalāni vicitrāṇi yamakānītarāṇi ca ॥9-57-19॥
[गृह्य (gṛhya) - having taken; सञ्ज्ञां (sañjñāṃ) - signal; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; गदया (gadayā) - with the mace; व्यचरद् (vyacarat) - moved; रणे (raṇe) - in the battle; मण्डलानि (maṇḍalāni) - circles; विचित्राणि (vicitrāṇi) - various; यमकानि (yamakāni) - paired; इतरणि (itaraṇi) - other; च (ca) - and;]
(Having taken the signal, then Bhima moved with the mace in the battle, forming various circles, paired and other.)
Upon receiving the signal, Bhima wielded his mace and moved through the battlefield, creating intricate and diverse formations, both paired and singular.
दक्षिणं मण्डलं सव्यं गोमूत्रकमथापि च। व्यचरत्पाण्डवो राजन्नरिं संमोहयन्निव ॥९-५७-२०॥
dakṣiṇaṃ maṇḍalaṃ savyaṃ gomūtrakamathāpi ca। vyacaratpāṇḍavo rājannariṃ saṃmohayanniva ॥9-57-20॥
[दक्षिणम् (dakṣiṇam) - southward; मण्डलम् (maṇḍalam) - circle; सव्यम् (savyam) - left; गोमूत्रकम् (gomūtrakam) - cow's urine; अथ (atha) - then; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; व्यचरत् (vyacarat) - moved; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pāṇḍava; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अरिम् (arim) - enemy; संमोहयन् (saṃmohayan) - bewildering; इव (iva) - as if;]
(The Pāṇḍava moved southward in a circle to the left, like cow's urine, then also, O king, bewildering the enemy as if.)
The Pāṇḍava moved in a counterclockwise circle to the south, resembling the flow of cow's urine, and in doing so, seemed to bewilder the enemy, O king.
तथैव तव पुत्रोऽपि गदामार्गविशारदः। व्यचरल्लघु चित्रं च भीमसेनजिघांसया ॥९-५७-२१॥

(Having seen those wonderful omens, the Pāñcālas, together with the Pāṇḍavas, all became unperturbed in mind, O best of the Bharatas.)
Upon witnessing those extraordinary omens, the Pāñcālas, along with the Pāṇḍavas, remained calm and composed, O esteemed descendant of Bharata.

(The gods went as they desired, as did the Gandharvas and Apsaras, speaking of the wonderful battle of your sons, O Bharata.)
The gods, along with the Gandharvas and Apsaras, departed as they wished, discussing the marvelous battle of your sons, O Bharata.
तथैव सिद्धा राजेन्द्र तथा वातिकचारणाः। नरसिंहौ प्रशंसन्तौ विप्रजग्मुर्यथागतम् ॥९-५७-५९॥
tathaiva siddhā rājendra tathā vātikacāraṇāḥ। narasiṃhau praśaṃsantau viprajagmur yathāgatam ॥9-57-59॥

(In the same way, O king, the perfected beings and the wandering minstrels, praising the two Narasimhas, departed as they came.)
