शुश्रूषुरपि दुर्मेधाः पुरुषोऽनियतेन्द्रियः। नालं वेदयितुं कृत्स्नौ धर्मार्थाविति मे मतिः ॥१०-५-१॥
śuśrūṣurapi durmedhāḥ puruṣo'niyatendriyaḥ। nālaṃ vedayituṃ kṛtsnau dharmārthāviti me matiḥ ॥10-5-1॥
[शुश्रूषुः (śuśrūṣuḥ) - desirous to hear; अपि (api) - even; दुर्मेधाः (durmedhāḥ) - of poor intellect; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; अनियतेन्द्रियः (aniyatendriyaḥ) - with uncontrolled senses; न (na) - not; अलम् (alam) - capable; वेदयितुम् (vedayitum) - to understand; कृत्स्नौ (kṛtsnau) - entire; धर्मार्थौ (dharmārthau) - dharma and artha; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion;]
(Even a man of poor intellect, desirous to hear, with uncontrolled senses, is not capable of understanding the entire dharma and artha, thus is my opinion.)
In my opinion, a man with uncontrolled senses and poor intellect, even if he is eager to learn, cannot fully comprehend the principles of dharma and artha.
तथैव तावन्मेधावी विनयं यो न शिक्षति। न च किञ्चन जानाति सोऽपि धर्मार्थनिश्चयम् ॥१०-५-२॥
tathaiva tāvanmedhāvī vinayaṃ yo na śikṣati। na ca kiñcana jānāti so'pi dharmārthaniscayam ॥10-5-2॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; तावत् (tāvat) - so much; मेधावी (medhāvī) - wise; विनयम् (vinayam) - humility; यः (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; शिक्षति (śikṣati) - learns; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; जानाति (jānāti) - knows; सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; धर्म (dharma) - righteousness; अर्थ (artha) - meaning; निश्चयम् (niscayam) - certainty;]
(In the same way, a wise person who does not learn humility, and knows nothing, also does not have certainty in righteousness and meaning.)
Similarly, a wise person who does not learn humility and knows nothing cannot have certainty in matters of righteousness and purpose.
शुश्रूषुस्त्वेव मेधावी पुरुषो नियतेन्द्रियः। जानीयादागमान्सर्वान्ग्राह्यं च न विरोधयेत् ॥१०-५-३॥

[शुश्रूषुः (śuśrūṣuḥ) - one who is eager to listen; तुः (tuḥ) - but; एव (eva) - indeed; मेधावी (medhāvī) - wise; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; नियत (niyata) - controlled; इन्द्रियः (indriyaḥ) - senses; जानीयात् (jānīyāt) - should know; आगमान् (āgamān) - scriptures; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; ग्राह्यम् (grāhyam) - acceptable; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; विरोधयेत् (virodhayet) - should contradict;]
(Indeed, a wise man who is eager to listen and has controlled senses should know all scriptures and should not contradict what is acceptable.)
A wise person, eager to learn and with controlled senses, should understand all scriptures and not oppose what is acceptable.
अनेयस्त्ववमानी यो दुरात्मा पापपूरुषः। दिष्टमुत्सृज्य कल्याणं करोति बहुपापकम् ॥१०-५-४॥
aneyastvavamānī yo durātmā pāpapūruṣaḥ। diṣṭamutsṛjya kalyāṇaṃ karoti bahupāpakam ॥10-5-4॥
[अनेयः (aneyaḥ) - uncontrolled; त्व (tva) - indeed; अवमानी (avamānī) - disrespectful; यः (yaḥ) - who; दुरात्मा (durātmā) - wicked soul; पाप (pāpa) - sinful; पूरुषः (pūruṣaḥ) - person; दिष्टम् (diṣṭam) - fate; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - abandoning; कल्याणम् (kalyāṇam) - auspicious; करोति (karoti) - does; बहु (bahu) - much; पापकम् (pāpakam) - sinful act;]
(The uncontrolled, disrespectful, wicked soul who is a sinful person, abandoning fate, does much sinful act instead of auspicious.)
The uncontrolled and disrespectful wicked person, ignoring his fate, engages in many sinful acts instead of pursuing what is auspicious.
नाथवन्तं तु सुहृदः प्रतिषेधन्ति पातकात्। निवर्तते तु लक्ष्मीवान्नालक्ष्मीवान्निवर्तते ॥१०-५-५॥
nāthavantaṃ tu suhṛdaḥ pratiṣedhanti pātakāt। nivartate tu lakṣmīvānnālakṣmīvānnivartate ॥10-5-5॥
[नाथवन्तम् (nāthavantam) - one with a protector; तु (tu) - but; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; प्रतिषेधन्ति (pratiṣedhanti) - restrain; पातकात् (pātakāt) - from sin; निवर्तते (nivartate) - turns back; तु (tu) - but; लक्ष्मीवान् (lakṣmīvān) - one with fortune; न (na) - not; अलक्ष्मीवान् (alakṣmīvān) - one without fortune; निवर्तते (nivartate) - turns back;]
(Friends restrain one with a protector from sin; but one with fortune turns back, not one without fortune.)
Friends restrain those who have protectors from committing sins, but those who are fortunate turn back, unlike those who are unfortunate.
यथा ह्युच्चावचैर्वाक्यैः क्षिप्तचित्तो नियम्यते। तथैव सुहृदा शक्यो नशक्यस्त्ववसीदति ॥१०-५-६॥
yathā hyuccāvacairvākyaiḥ kṣiptacitto niyamyate। tathaiva suhṛdā śakyo naśakyastvavasīdati ॥10-5-6॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; हि (hi) - indeed; उच्चावचैः (uccāvacaiḥ) - by high and low; वाक्यैः (vākyaiḥ) - by words; क्षिप्तचित्तः (kṣiptacittaḥ) - agitated mind; नियम्यते (niyamyate) - is controlled; तथा (tathā) - so; एव (eva) - indeed; सुहृदा (suhṛdā) - by a friend; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; न (na) - not; अशक्यः (aśakyaḥ) - impossible; तु (tu) - but; अवसीदति (avasīdati) - sinks;]
(Just as an agitated mind is controlled by high and low words, so indeed, by a friend, the possible and the impossible sink.)
Just as an agitated mind can be controlled by various words, similarly, a friend can influence both the possible and the impossible.
तथैव सुहृदं प्राज्ञं कुर्वाणं कर्म पापकम्। प्राज्ञाः सम्प्रतिषेधन्ते यथाशक्ति पुनः पुनः ॥१०-५-७॥
tathaiva suhṛdaṃ prājñaṃ kurvāṇaṃ karma pāpakam। prājñāḥ sampratiṣedhante yathāśakti punaḥ punaḥ ॥10-5-7॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; सुहृदं (suhṛdaṃ) - friend; प्राज्ञं (prājñaṃ) - wise; कुर्वाणं (kurvāṇaṃ) - doing; कर्म (karma) - action; पापकम् (pāpakam) - sinful; प्राज्ञाः (prājñāḥ) - wise ones; सम्प्रतिषेधन्ते (sampratiṣedhante) - restrain; यथाशक्ति (yathāśakti) - to the best of their ability; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(In the same way, the wise friend, doing sinful action, the wise ones restrain to the best of their ability, again and again.)
In the same way, when a wise friend is engaged in sinful actions, the wise ones restrain him to the best of their ability, repeatedly.
स कल्याणे मतिं कृत्वा नियम्यात्मानमात्मना। कुरु मे वचनं तात येन पश्चान्न तप्यसे ॥१०-५-८॥
sa kalye mātiṃ kṛtvā niyamyātmānamātmanā। kuru me vacanaṃ tāta yena paścānna tapyase ॥10-5-8॥
[स (sa) - he; कल्याणे (kalye) - auspicious; मतिं (matiṃ) - mind; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; नियम्य (niyamya) - controlling; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by self; कुरु (kuru) - do; मे (me) - my; वचनं (vacanaṃ) - word; तात (tāta) - dear; येन (yena) - by which; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; न (na) - not; तप्यसे (tapyase) - you will lament;]
(He, having made the mind auspicious, controlling the self by the self, do my word, dear, by which afterwards you will not lament.)
Dear one, make your mind auspicious and control yourself by yourself. Follow my words so that you will not regret later.
न वधः पूज्यते लोके सुप्तानामिह धर्मतः। तथैव न्यस्तशस्त्राणां विमुक्तरथवाजिनाम् ॥१०-५-९॥
na vadhaḥ pūjyate loke suptānāmiha dharmataḥ। tathaiva nyastaśastrāṇāṃ vimuktarathavājinām ॥10-5-9॥
[न (na) - not; वधः (vadhaḥ) - killing; पूज्यते (pūjyate) - is honored; लोके (loke) - in the world; सुप्तानाम् (suptānām) - of those who are asleep; इह (iha) - here; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - according to dharma; तथैव (tathaiva) - similarly; न्यस्तशस्त्राणाम् (nyastaśastrāṇām) - of those who have laid down their weapons; विमुक्तरथवाजिनाम् (vimuktarathavājinām) - of those who have freed their chariots and horses;]
(The killing of those who are asleep is not honored in the world here according to dharma; similarly, of those who have laid down their weapons and freed their chariots and horses.)
In this world, according to dharma, killing those who are asleep is not honored, nor is it for those who have laid down their weapons and freed their chariots and horses.
ये च ब्रूयुस्तवास्मीति ये च स्युः शरणागताः। विमुक्तमूर्धजा ये च ये चापि हतवाहनाः ॥१०-५-१०॥
ye ca brūyus tavāsmīti ye ca syuḥ śaraṇāgatāḥ। vimuktamūrdhajā ye ca ye cāpi hatavāhanāḥ ॥10-5-10॥
[ये (ye) - those who; च (ca) - and; ब्रूयुः (brūyuḥ) - might say; तव (tava) - your; अस्मि (asmi) - am; इति (iti) - thus; ये (ye) - those who; च (ca) - and; स्युः (syuḥ) - might be; शरणागताः (śaraṇāgatāḥ) - refuge seekers; विमुक्त (vimukta) - freed; मूर्धजाः (mūrdhajāḥ) - hair; ये (ye) - those who; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - those who; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; हत (hata) - destroyed; वाहनाः (vāhanāḥ) - vehicles;]
(Those who might say 'I am yours' and those who might be refuge seekers; those with freed hair and those whose vehicles are destroyed.)
Those who declare 'I am yours' and seek refuge, those with unbound hair, and those whose vehicles are destroyed.
अद्य स्वप्स्यन्ति पाञ्चाला विमुक्तकवचा विभो। विश्वस्ता रजनीं सर्वे प्रेता इव विचेतसः ॥१०-५-११॥
adya svapsyanti pāñcālā vimuktakavacā vibho। viśvastā rajanīṃ sarve pretā iva vicetasaḥ ॥10-5-11॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; स्वप्स्यन्ति (svapsyanti) - will sleep; पाञ्चाला (pāñcālā) - Panchalas; विमुक्तकवचा (vimuktakavacā) - without armor; विभो (vibho) - O lord; विश्वस्ता (viśvastā) - confidently; रजनीं (rajanīṃ) - night; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रेता (pretā) - like the dead; इव (iva) - as if; विचेतसः (vicetasaḥ) - unconscious;]
(Today the Panchalas, without armor, O lord, will sleep confidently through the night, all as if dead and unconscious.)
Today, O lord, the Panchalas, having removed their armor, will sleep through the night with confidence, all appearing as if they are dead and unconscious.
यस्तेषां तदवस्थानां द्रुह्येत पुरुषोऽनृजुः। व्यक्तं स नरके मज्जेदगाधे विपुलेऽप्लवे ॥१०-५-१२॥
yasteṣāṃ tadavasthānāṃ druhyeta puruṣo'nṛjuḥ। vyaktaṃ sa narake majjedagādhe vipule'plave ॥10-5-12॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; तदवस्थानाम् (tadavasthānām) - of those situations; द्रुह्येत (druhyeta) - would betray; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a person; अनृजुः (anṛjuḥ) - dishonest; व्यक्तम् (vyaktam) - clearly; सः (saḥ) - he; नरके (narake) - in hell; मज्जेत् (majjeta) - would sink; अगाधे (agādhe) - bottomless; विपुले (vipule) - vast; अप्लवे (aplave) - without a boat;]
(Whoever among them, in those situations, would betray, a dishonest person, clearly he would sink in a bottomless, vast hell without a boat.)
A person who is dishonest and betrays others in those situations will clearly find himself sinking into a vast, bottomless hell without any means of rescue.
सर्वास्त्रविदुषां लोके श्रेष्ठस्त्वमसि विश्रुतः। न च ते जातु लोकेऽस्मिन्सुसूक्ष्ममपि किल्बिषम् ॥१०-५-१३॥
sarvāstraviduṣāṃ loke śreṣṭhastvamasi viśrutaḥ। na ca te jātu loke'sminsusūkṣmamapi kilbiṣam ॥10-5-13॥
[सर्व (sarva) - all; अस्त्र (astra) - weapons; विदुषाम् (viduṣām) - of the learned; लोके (loke) - in the world; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - best; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - renowned; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; जातु (jātu) - ever; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - this; सुसूक्ष्मम् (susūkṣmam) - subtle; अपि (api) - even; किल्बिषम् (kilbiṣam) - sin;]
(Among all the learned in the world, you are renowned as the best in weaponry. And there is not even a subtle sin of yours in this world.)
You are renowned as the best among all the learned in weaponry in the world, and there is not even the slightest sin of yours in this world.
त्वं पुनः सूर्यसङ्काशः श्वोभूत उदिते रवौ। प्रकाशे सर्वभूतानां विजेता युधि शात्रवान् ॥१०-५-१४॥
tvaṁ punaḥ sūryasaṅkāśaḥ śvobhūta udite ravau। prakāśe sarvabhūtānāṁ vijetā yudhi śātravān ॥10-5-14॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; सूर्यसङ्काशः (sūryasaṅkāśaḥ) - like the sun; श्वः (śvaḥ) - tomorrow; भूत (bhūta) - become; उदिते (udite) - risen; रवौ (ravau) - sun; प्रकाशे (prakāśe) - in the light; सर्वभूतानां (sarvabhūtānāṁ) - of all beings; विजेता (vijetā) - conqueror; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; शात्रवान् (śātravān) - enemies;]
(You, again like the sun, will become tomorrow when the sun has risen, the light of all beings, the conqueror in battle of enemies.)
You will rise again like the sun tomorrow, becoming the light for all beings and the conqueror of enemies in battle.
असम्भावितरूपं हि त्वयि कर्म विगर्हितम्। शुक्ले रक्तमिव न्यस्तं भवेदिति मतिर्मम ॥१०-५-१५॥
asambhāvitarūpaṃ hi tvayi karma vigarhitam। śukle raktamiva nyastaṃ bhavediti matirmama ॥10-5-15॥
[असम्भावितरूपम् (asambhāvitarūpam) - unexpected form; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; कर्म (karma) - action; विगर्हितम् (vigarhitam) - blameworthy; शुक्ले (śukle) - on white; रक्तम् (raktam) - red; इव (iva) - like; न्यस्तम् (nyastam) - placed; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; इति (iti) - thus; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; मम (mama) - my;]
(Indeed, an unexpected form of blameworthy action in you would be like red placed on white, thus is my thought.)
My thought is that a blameworthy action in you would be as unexpected as red placed on white.

एवमेतद्यथात्थ त्वमनुशास्मीह मातुल। तैस्तु पूर्वमयं सेतुः शतधा विदलीकृतः ॥१०-५-१६॥
evametadyathāttha tvamanuśāsmīha mātula। taistu pūrvamayaṃ setuḥ śatadhā vidalīkṛtaḥ ॥10-5-16॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; अत्थ (attha) - you said; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अनुशास्मि (anuśāsmi) - I instruct; इह (iha) - here; मातुल (mātula) - uncle; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; तु (tu) - but; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; अयम् (ayam) - this; सेतुः (setuḥ) - bridge; शतधा (śatadhā) - into a hundred pieces; विदलीकृतः (vidalīkṛtaḥ) - was broken;]
(Thus, as you said, I instruct here, uncle. But this bridge was broken into a hundred pieces by them before.)

प्रत्यक्षं भूमिपालानां भवतां चापि संनिधौ। न्यस्तशस्त्रो मम पिता धृष्टद्युम्नेन पातितः ॥१०-५-१७॥
pratyakṣaṃ bhūmipālānāṃ bhavatāṃ cāpi saṃnidhau। nyastaśastro mama pitā dhṛṣṭadyumnena pātitaḥ ॥10-5-17॥

(Karna, the best of charioteers, with the wheel of his chariot fallen, dejected in the greatest calamity, was slain by the wielder of Gandiva.)
Karna, the foremost among charioteers, found himself in dire straits when the wheel of his chariot fell off. In this moment of great calamity, he was killed by Arjuna, the wielder of the Gandiva bow.
तथा शान्तनवो भीष्मो न्यस्तशस्त्रो निरायुधः। शिखण्डिनं पुरस्कृत्य हतो गाण्डीवधन्वना ॥१०-५-१९॥
tathā śāntanavo bhīṣmo nyastaśastro nirāyudhaḥ। śikhaṇḍinaṃ puraskṛtya hato gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ॥10-5-19॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Śantanu; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; न्यस्त (nyasta) - laid down; शस्त्रः (śastraḥ) - weapons; निरायुधः (nirāyudhaḥ) - weaponless; शिखण्डिनम् (śikhaṇḍinam) - Śikhaṇḍin; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - placing in front; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; गाण्डीवधन्वना (gāṇḍīvadhanvanā) - by the wielder of the Gandiva bow;]

tamabrūtāṃ mahātmānau bhojaśāradvatāvubhau। kimayaṃ syandano yuktaḥ kiṃ ca kāryaṃ cikīrṣitam ॥10-5-29॥

aśvatthāmā tu saṅkruddhaḥ piturvadhamanusmaran। tābhyāṃ tathyaṃ tadācakhyau yadasyātmacikīrṣitam ॥10-5-31॥

(How can the sinner Panchala, killed by me like an animal, attain the worlds won by battle of weapons? Thus is my thought.)

क्षिप्रं संनद्धकवचौ सखड्गावात्तकार्मुकौ। समास्थाय प्रतीक्षेतां रथवर्यौ परन्तपौ ॥१०-५-३५॥
kṣipraṃ saṃnaddhakavacau sakhaḍgāvāttakārmukau। samāsthāya pratīkṣetāṃ rathavaryau parantapau ॥10-5-35॥

इत्युक्त्वा रथमास्थाय प्रायादभिमुखः परान्। तमन्वगात्कृपो राजन्कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः ॥१०-५-३६॥

yayuśca śibiraṃ teṣāṃ samprasuptajanaṃ vibho। dvāradeśaṃ tu samprāpya drauṇistasthau rathottame ॥10-5-38॥
