(At the gate-region, then, having seen Aśvatthāman standing, what did those two, Bhoja and Kṛpa, do? O Sañjaya, tell me.)
O Sañjaya, tell me, what did Bhoja and Kṛpa do when they saw Aśvatthāman standing at the gate?

kṛtavarmāṇam āmantrya kṛpaṃ ca sa mahāratham। drauṇir manyuparītātmā śibiradvāram āsadat ॥10-6-2॥

After speaking to Kṛtavarman and Kṛpa, the mighty charioteer, Droṇa's son, his mind filled with rage, went to the entrance of the camp.
तत्र भूतं महाकायं चन्द्रार्कसदृशद्युतिम्। सोऽपश्यद्द्वारमावृत्य तिष्ठन्तं लोमहर्षणम् ॥१०-६-३॥
tatra bhūtaṃ mahākāyaṃ candrārkasadṛśadyutim। so'paśyaddvāramāvṛtya tiṣṭhantaṃ lomaharṣaṇam ॥10-6-3॥

(There, a being of great body, with radiance like the moon and sun, he saw blocking the door, standing, hair-raising.)

वसानं चर्म वैयाघ्रं महारुधिरविस्रवम्। कृष्णाजिनोत्तरासङ्गं नागयज्ञोपवीतिनम् ॥१०-६-४॥

दंष्ट्राकरालवदनं व्यादितास्यं भयावहम्। नयनानां सहस्रैश्च विचित्रैरभिभूषितम् ॥१०-६-६॥

नैव तस्य वपुः शक्यं प्रवक्तुं वेष एव वा। सर्वथा तु तदालक्ष्य स्फुटेयुरपि पर्वताः ॥१०-६-७॥

(Not indeed his form or appearance is possible to describe. But having seen that, even mountains would burst in every way.)
It is not possible to describe his form or appearance at all. In fact, just seeing it, even mountains would shatter.
तस्यास्यान्नासिकाभ्यां च श्रवणाभ्यां च सर्वशः। तेभ्यश्चाक्षिसहस्रेभ्यः प्रादुरासन्महार्चिषः ॥१०-६-८॥
tasyāsyānnāsikābhyāṃ ca śravaṇābhyāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ। tebhyaścākṣi-sahasrebhyaḥ prādurāsan-mahārciṣaḥ ॥10-6-8॥

(Of him, from this (face), from the two nostrils and from the two ears and in every way; from them and from the thousand eyes, great flames arose.)

तथा तेजोमरीचिभ्यः शङ्खचक्रगदाधराः। प्रादुरासन्हृषीकेशाः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥१०-६-९॥
tathā tejomarīcibhyaḥ śaṅkhacakragadādharāḥ। prādurāsan hṛṣīkeśāḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ॥10-6-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तेजोमरीचिभ्यः (tejomarīcibhyaḥ) - from rays of light; शङ्खचक्रगदाधराः (śaṅkhacakragadādharāḥ) - bearing conch, discus, and mace; प्रादुरासन् (prādurāsan) - appeared; हृषीकेशाः (hṛṣīkeśāḥ) - Hṛṣīkeśas; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; अथ (atha) - then; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(Thus, from rays of light, bearing conch, discus, and mace, Hṛṣīkeśas appeared by hundreds and then by thousands.)
Thus, from the rays of light, countless forms of Hṛṣīkeśa, each bearing a conch, discus, and mace, appeared by the hundreds and thousands.
तदत्यद्भुतमालोक्य भूतं लोकभयङ्करम्। द्रौणिरव्यथितो दिव्यैरस्त्रवर्षैरवाकिरत् ॥१०-६-१०॥
tad atyadbhutam ālokya bhūtam lokabhayaṅkaram। drauṇir avyathito divyaiḥ astravarṣaiḥ avākirat ॥10-6-10॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अत्यद्भुतम् (atyadbhutam) - most wonderful; आलोक्य (ālokya) - having seen; भूतम् (bhūtam) - being; लोकभयङ्करम् (lokabhayaṅkaram) - terrifying to the world; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Drauni (Aśvatthāma, son of Droṇa); अव्यथितः (avyathitaḥ) - unperturbed; दिव्यैः (divyaiḥ) - with divine; अस्त्रवर्षैः (astravarṣaiḥ) - showers of missiles; अवाकिरत् (avākirat) - covered;]
(Having seen that most wonderful and terrifying being to the world, Drauni, unperturbed, covered (it) with showers of divine missiles.)
Seeing that most astonishing and terrifying being for the world, Drauni (Aśvatthāma), undisturbed, showered it with divine weapons.
द्रौणिमुक्ताञ्शरांस्तांस्तु तद्भूतं महदग्रसत्। उदधेरिव वार्योघान्पावको वडवामुखः ॥१०-६-११॥
drauṇimuktāñśarāṃstāṃstu tadbhūtaṃ mahadagrasat। udadheriva vāryoghānpāvako vaḍavāmukhaḥ ॥10-6-11॥
[द्रौणि (drauṇi) - by Droṇa's son; मुक्तान् (muktān) - released; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; तान् (tān) - those; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; भूतं (bhūtaṃ) - being; महत् (mahat) - great; अग्रसत् (agrasat) - consumed; उदधेः (udadheḥ) - of the ocean; इव (iva) - like; वारि (vāri) - waters; ओघान् (oghān) - waves; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - fire; वडवामुखः (vaḍavāmukhaḥ) - submarine fire;]
(But that great being consumed those arrows released by Droṇa's son, just as the submarine fire (pāvakaḥ vaḍavāmukhaḥ) consumes the waves of water of the ocean.)
But that mighty being devoured all those arrows shot by Droṇa's son, just as the submarine fire swallows the waves of the ocean.
अश्वत्थामा तु सम्प्रेक्ष्य ताञ्शरौघान्निरर्थकान्। रथशक्तिं मुमोचास्मै दीप्तामग्निशिखामिव ॥१०-६-१२॥
aśvatthāmā tu samprekṣya tāñśaraughānnirarthakān। rathaśaktiṃ mumocāsmai dīptām agniśikhām iva ॥10-6-12॥
[अश्वत्थामा (aśvatthāmā) - Aśvatthāman; तु (tu) - but; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having seen; तान् (tān) - those; शरौघान् (śaraughān) - arrows in a mass; निरर्थकान् (nirarthakān) - useless; रथशक्तिम् (rathaśaktim) - the chariot-spear; मुमोच (mumoca) - released; अस्मै (asmai) - at him; दीप्ताम् (dīptām) - blazing; अग्निशिखाम् (agniśikhām) - like a flame of fire; इव (iva) - like;]
(Aśvatthāman but having seen those arrows in a mass useless, released at him the chariot-spear blazing like a flame of fire.)
But Aśvatthāman, seeing that those masses of arrows were useless, released at him a blazing chariot-spear like a flame of fire.
सा तदाहत्य दीप्ताग्रा रथशक्तिरशीर्यत। युगान्ते सूर्यमाहत्य महोल्केव दिवश्च्युता ॥१०-६-१३॥
sā tadāhatya dīptāgrā rathaśaktiraśīryata। yugānte sūryamāhatya maholkeva divaścyutā ॥10-6-13॥
[सा (sā) - she; तदा (tadā) - then; आहत्य (āhatya) - having struck; दीप्ताग्रा (dīptāgrā) - with blazing tip; रथशक्ति: (rathaśaktiḥ) - the chariot-spear; अशीर्यत (aśīryata) - was shattered; युगान्ते (yugānte) - at the end of the age; सूर्यम् (sūryam) - the sun; आहत्य (āhatya) - having struck; महा-उल्का-इव (mahā-ulkā-iva) - like a great meteor; दिवः (divaḥ) - from the sky; च्युता (cyutā) - fallen;]
(She then, having struck with the blazing-tipped chariot-spear, was shattered. At the end of the age, having struck the sun, like a great meteor fallen from the sky.)

अथ हेमत्सरुं दिव्यं खड्गमाकाशवर्चसम्। कोशात्समुद्बबर्हाशु बिलाद्दीप्तमिवोरगम् ॥१०-६-१४॥
atha hematsaruṃ divyaṃ khaḍgam ākāśavarcasam। kośāt samudbabarhāśu bilād dīptam ivoragam ॥10-6-14॥
[अथ (atha) - then; हेमत्सरुम् (hematsarum) - golden scabbard; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; खड्गम् (khaḍgam) - sword; आकाशवर्चसम् (ākāśavarcasam) - shining like the sky; कोशात् (kośāt) - from the sheath; समुद्बबर्ह (samudbabarha) - drew out; आशु (āśu) - quickly; बिलात् (bilāt) - from the hole; दीप्तम् (dīptam) - shining; इव (iva) - like; उरगम् (uragam) - serpent;]
(Then (he) quickly drew out the divine sword shining like the sky from the golden scabbard, like a shining serpent from its hole.)
Then he quickly drew the divine sword, shining like the sky, from its golden scabbard, just as a radiant serpent emerges from its hole.
ततः खड्गवरं धीमान्भूताय प्राहिणोत्तदा। स तदासाद्य भूतं वै विलयं तूलवद्ययौ ॥१०-६-१५॥
tataḥ khaḍgavaraṃ dhīmānbhūtāya prāhiṇottadā। sa tadāsādya bhūtaṃ vai vilayaṃ tūlavad yayau ॥10-6-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; खड्गवरम् (khaḍgavaram) - excellent sword; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise one; भूताय (bhūtāya) - to the being; प्राहिणोत् (prāhiṇot) - sent; तदा (tadā) - at that time; सः (saḥ) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having obtained; भूतम् (bhūtam) - the being; वै (vai) - indeed; विलयम् (vilayam) - destruction; तूलवत् (tūlavat) - like cotton; ययौ (yayau) - went;]
(Then the wise one sent the excellent sword to the being at that time. He, having obtained the being, indeed went to destruction like cotton.)
Then the wise man sent the excellent sword to the being. Upon receiving it, the being was destroyed instantly, like cotton is consumed.
ततः स कुपितो द्रौणिरिन्द्रकेतुनिभां गदाम्। ज्वलन्तीं प्राहिणोत्तस्मै भूतं तामपि चाग्रसत् ॥१०-६-१६॥
tataḥ sa kupito drauṇir indraketunibhāṃ gadām। jvalantīṃ prāhiṇot tasmai bhūtaṃ tām api cāgrasat ॥10-6-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; कुपितः (kupitaḥ) - angry; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - the son of Droṇa; इन्द्रकेतुनिभाम् (indraketunibhām) - resembling Indra's banner; गदाम् (gadām) - mace; ज्वलन्तीम् (jvalantīm) - blazing; प्राहिणोत् (prāhiṇot) - sent; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; भूतम् (bhūtam) - being; ताम् (tām) - her (it); अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; अग्रसत् (agrasat) - devoured; ॥१०-६-१६॥ (॥10-6-16॥) - ;]
(Then he, angry, the son of Droṇa, a mace resembling Indra's banner, blazing, sent to him; being, her (it), also and devoured.)
Then, enraged, the son of Droṇa sent a blazing mace, resembling Indra's banner, at him; but he also devoured that weapon.
ततः सर्वायुधाभावे वीक्षमाणस्ततस्ततः। अपश्यत्कृतमाकाशमनाकाशं जनार्दनैः ॥१०-६-१७॥
tataḥ sarvāyudhābhāve vīkṣamāṇas tatastataḥ। apaśyat kṛtam ākāśam anākāśaṃ janārdanaiḥ ॥10-6-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वायुध-अभावे (sarvāyudha-abhāve) - in the absence of all weapons; वीक्षमाणः (vīkṣamāṇaḥ) - observing; ततः ततः (tatastataḥ) - here and there; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; कृतम् (kṛtam) - created; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - sky; अनाकाशम् (anākāśam) - non-sky; जनार्दनैः (janārdanaiḥ) - by Janardanas (Krishna and his forms);]
(Then, in the absence of all weapons, observing here and there, he saw the sky and the non-sky created by the Janardanas.)
Then, when all weapons were gone, looking all around, he saw that Janardana (Krishna and his forms) had created both sky and non-sky.
तदद्भुततमं दृष्ट्वा द्रोणपुत्रो निरायुधः। अब्रवीदभिसन्तप्तः कृपवाक्यमनुस्मरन् ॥१०-६-१८॥
tadadbhutatamaṃ dṛṣṭvā droṇaputro nirāyudhaḥ। abravīdabhisantaptaḥ kṛpavākyamanusmaran ॥10-6-18॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुततमम् (adbhutatamam) - most wonderful; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; द्रोणपुत्रः (droṇaputraḥ) - the son of Droṇa; निरायुधः (nirāyudhaḥ) - unarmed; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अभिसन्तप्तः (abhisantaptaḥ) - deeply distressed; कृपवाक्यम् (kṛpavākyam) - the words of Kṛpa; अनुस्मरन् (anusmaran) - remembering;]
(Having seen that most wonderful thing, the son of Droṇa, unarmed, deeply distressed, remembering the words of Kṛpa, said:)
Seeing that most astonishing event, Droṇa's son, unarmed and deeply troubled, recalled Kṛpa's words and spoke.
ब्रुवतामप्रियं पथ्यं सुहृदां न शृणोति यः। स शोचत्यापदं प्राप्य यथाहमतिवर्त्य तौ ॥१०-६-१९॥
bruvatām apriyaṃ pathyaṃ suhṛdāṃ na śṛṇoti yaḥ। sa śocaty āpadaṃ prāpya yathāham ativartya tau ॥10-6-19॥
[ब्रुवताम् (bruvatām) - of those who speak; अप्रियं (apriyaṃ) - unpleasant; पथ्यम् (pathyaṃ) - wholesome; सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; न (na) - not; शृणोति (śṛṇoti) - hears; यः (yaḥ) - who; सः (saḥ) - he; शोचति (śocati) - grieves; आपदम् (āpadaṃ) - misfortune; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; यथा (yathā) - just as; अहम् (aham) - I; अतिवर्त्य (ativartya) - having disregarded; तौ (tau) - those two;]
(He who does not listen to the wholesome but unpleasant words of friends grieves, having obtained misfortune, just as I, having disregarded those two.)
One who does not heed the beneficial but unpleasant advice of friends suffers in adversity, just as I now grieve for having ignored those two.
शास्त्रदृष्टानवध्यान्यः समतीत्य जिघांसति। स पथः प्रच्युतो धर्म्यात्कुपथं प्रतिपद्यते ॥१०-६-२०॥
śāstra-dṛṣṭān avadhyānyaḥ samatītya jighāṃsati। sa pathaḥ pracyuto dharmyāt kupathaṃ pratipadyate ॥10-6-20॥
[शास्त्रदृष्टान् (śāstra-dṛṣṭān) - those prescribed by the scriptures; अवध्यान् (avadhyān) - not to be killed; यः (yaḥ) - who; समतीत्य (samatītya) - having transgressed; जिघांसति (jighāṃsati) - desires to kill; सः (saḥ) - he; पथः (pathaḥ) - from the path; प्रच्युतः (pracyutaḥ) - fallen; धर्म्यात् (dharmyāt) - from righteousness; कुपथम् (kupatham) - evil path; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - takes to;]
(He who, having transgressed those not to be killed as prescribed by the scriptures, desires to kill, he, fallen from the path of righteousness, takes to an evil path.)
He who disregards the scriptural injunctions and seeks to kill those who should not be slain, strays from the righteous path and follows an evil way.
गोब्राह्मणनृपस्त्रीषु सख्युर्मातुर्गुरोस्तथा। वृद्धबालजडान्धेषु सुप्तभीतोत्थितेषु च ॥१०-६-२१॥
gobrāhmaṇanṛpastrīṣu sakhyurmāturgurostathā। vṛddhabālajaḍāndheṣu suptabhītotthiteṣu ca ॥10-6-21॥

(Among cows, brāhmaṇas, kings, women, friends, mothers, teachers, also among the old, children, dull-witted, blind, those asleep, frightened, and those who have arisen.)
One should be especially careful and respectful towards cows, brāhmaṇas, kings, women, friends, mothers, teachers, the elderly, children, the dull-witted, the blind, those who are asleep, those who are frightened, and those who have just awakened.
मत्तोन्मत्तप्रमत्तेषु न शस्त्राण्युपधारयेत्। इत्येवं गुरुभिः पूर्वमुपदिष्टं नृणां सदा ॥१०-६-२२॥
mattonmattapramatteṣu na śastrāṇyupadhārayet। ityevaṃ gurubhiḥ pūrvamupadiṣṭaṃ nṛṇāṃ sadā ॥10-6-22॥
[मत्त (matta) - intoxicated; उन्मत्त (unmatta) - insane; प्रमत्तेषु (pramatteṣu) - to the careless; न (na) - not; शस्त्राणि (śastrāṇi) - weapons; उपधारयेत् (upadhārayet) - should be given; इति (iti) - thus; एवं (evaṃ) - in this way; गुरुभिः (gurubhiḥ) - by the teachers; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; उपदिष्टं (upadiṣṭaṃ) - instructed; नृणां (nṛṇāṃ) - to men; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(To the intoxicated, insane, and careless, weapons should not be given. Thus, in this way, it was previously instructed by the teachers to men always.)

सोऽहमुत्क्रम्य पन्थानं शास्त्रदृष्टं सनातनम्। अमार्गेणैवमारभ्य घोरामापदमागतः ॥१०-६-२३॥
so'ham utkramya panthānaṃ śāstradṛṣṭaṃ sanātanam। amārgeṇaiva mārabhya ghorām āpadam āgataḥ ॥10-6-23॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; उत्क्रम्य (utkramya) - having transgressed; पन्थानम् (panthānam) - the path; शास्त्रदृष्टम् (śāstradṛṣṭam) - prescribed by the scriptures; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal; अमार्गेण (amārgeṇa) - by a wrong path; एव (eva) - indeed; आरभ्य (ārabhya) - having undertaken; घोराम् (ghorām) - terrible; आपदम् (āpadam) - calamity; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have come;]
(He, having transgressed the eternal path prescribed by the scriptures, indeed having undertaken a wrong path, have come to a terrible calamity.)
I have deviated from the eternal path shown by the scriptures and, by following a wrong way, have brought myself into a terrible calamity.
तां चापदं घोरतरां प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः। यदुद्यम्य महत्कृत्यं भयादपि निवर्तते ॥१०-६-२४॥
tāṃ cāpadaṃ ghoratarāṃ pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ। yadudyamya mahatkṛtyaṃ bhayādapi nivartate ॥10-6-24॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; (that) च (ca) - and; अपदं (apadaṃ) - misfortune; घोरतरां (ghoratarāṃ) - most terrible; प्रवदन्ति (pravadanti) - declare; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise; यत् (yat) - which; उद्यंय (udyamya) - having undertaken; महत् (mahat) - great; कृत्यं (kṛtyaṃ) - deed; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; अपि (api) - even; निवर्तते (nivartate) - turns back;]
(And the wise declare that as the most terrible misfortune, which, having undertaken a great deed, even from fear, one turns back.)
The wise say that the greatest misfortune is when, out of fear, a person abandons a great task after having begun it.
अशक्यं चैव कः कर्तुं शक्तः शक्तिबलादिह। न हि दैवाद्गरीयो वै मानुषं कर्म कथ्यते ॥१०-६-२५॥
aśakyaṃ caiva kaḥ kartuṃ śaktaḥ śaktibalādiha। na hi daivādgarīyo vai mānuṣaṃ karma kathyate ॥10-6-25॥
[अशक्यं (aśakyaṃ) - impossible; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कः (kaḥ) - who; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - able; शक्तिबलात् (śaktibalāt) - by strength of power; इह (iha) - here; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; दैवात् (daivāt) - by fate; गरीयः (garīyaḥ) - greater; वै (vai) - indeed; मानुषं (mānuṣaṃ) - human; कर्म (karma) - action; कथ्यते (kathyate) - is said;]
(Impossible and indeed who is able to do by strength of power here? Not indeed by fate greater indeed human action is said:)
Who here is able to accomplish the impossible by mere strength? Indeed, no human action is said to be greater than fate.
मानुषं कुर्वतः कर्म यदि दैवान्न सिध्यति। स पथः प्रच्युतो धर्म्याद्विपदं प्रतिपद्यते ॥१०-६-२६॥
mānuṣaṃ kurvataḥ karma yadi daivānna sidhyati। sa pathaḥ pracyuto dharmyād vipadaṃ pratipadyate ॥10-6-26॥
[मानुषं (mānuṣam) - human; कुर्वतः (kurvataḥ) - of one performing; कर्म (karma) - action; यदि (yadi) - if; दैवान्न (daivāt) - by fate; न (na) - not; सिध्यति (sidhyati) - is accomplished; सः (saḥ) - he; पथः (pathaḥ) - path; प्रच्युतः (pracyutaḥ) - deviated; धर्म्यात् (dharmyāt) - from righteousness; विपदं (vipadam) - misfortune; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - attains;]
(If the human action performed does not succeed due to fate, he who has deviated from the righteous path attains misfortune.)

प्रतिघातं ह्यविज्ञातं प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः। यदारभ्य क्रियां काञ्चिद्भयादिह निवर्तते ॥१०-६-२७॥
pratighātaṃ hy avijñātaṃ pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ। yad ārabhya kriyāṃ kāṃcid bhayād iha nivartate ॥10-6-27॥
[प्रतिघातम् (pratighātam) - obstacle; हि (hi) - indeed; अविज्ञातम् (avijñātam) - unknown; प्रवदन्ति (pravadanti) - say; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise; यत् (yat) - which; आरभ्य (ārabhya) - having begun; क्रियाम् (kriyām) - action; काञ्चित् (kāṃcit) - any; भयात् (bhayāt) - out of fear; इह (iha) - here; निवर्तते (nivartate) - ceases;]
(The wise indeed say that an unknown obstacle is that from which, having begun any action here, one ceases out of fear.)
The wise say that when someone, out of fear, abandons any action after starting it, the cause is an unknown obstacle.
तदिदं दुष्प्रणीतेन भयं मां समुपस्थितम्। न हि द्रोणसुतः सङ्ख्ये निवर्तेत कथञ्चन ॥१०-६-२८॥
tad idaṃ duṣpraṇītena bhayaṃ māṃ samupasthitam। na hi droṇasutaḥ saṅkhye nivarteta kathaṃcana ॥10-6-28॥
[तत् (tat) - that; इदं (idaṃ) - this; दुष्प्रणीतेन (duṣpraṇītena) - by mismanagement; भयम् (bhayam) - danger; माम् (mām) - to me; समुपस्थितम् (samupasthitam) - has come; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; द्रोणसुतः (droṇasutaḥ) - the son of Droṇa; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; निवर्तेत (nivarteta) - would turn back; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(That this danger has come to me by mismanagement. Indeed, the son of Droṇa would not turn back in battle in any way.)
This danger has come upon me due to mismanagement. Indeed, the son of Droṇa would never retreat in battle under any circumstances.
इदं च सुमहद्भूतं दैवदण्डमिवोद्यतम्। न चैतदभिजानामि चिन्तयन्नपि सर्वथा ॥१०-६-२९॥
idaṃ ca sumahadbhūtaṃ daivadaṇḍamivodyatam। na caitadabhijānāmi cintayannapi sarvathā ॥10-6-29॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; भूतं (bhūtaṃ) - phenomenon; दैवदण्डम् (daivadaṇḍam) - divine punishment; इव (iva) - like; उद्यतम् (udyatam) - raised; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; अभिजानामि (abhijānāmi) - I recognize; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking; अपि (api) - even; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in any way;]
(And this is a very great phenomenon, raised like a divine punishment. And I do not recognize this, even thinking in any way.)
This is a truly extraordinary event, as if a divine punishment has been raised. No matter how much I think about it, I cannot understand what it is.
ध्रुवं येयमधर्मे मे प्रवृत्ता कलुषा मतिः। तस्याः फलमिदं घोरं प्रतिघाताय दृश्यते ॥१०-६-३०॥
dhruvaṃ yeyam adharme me pravṛttā kaluṣā matiḥ। tasyāḥ phalam idaṃ ghoraṃ pratighātāya dṛśyate ॥10-6-30॥
[ध्रुवं (dhruvam) - certainly; य (ya) - which; इयम् (iyam) - this; अधर्मे (adharme) - in unrighteousness; मे (me) - my; प्रवृत्ता (pravṛttā) - engaged; कलुषा (kaluṣā) - impure; मतिः (matiḥ) - mind; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of that; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; इदं (idaṃ) - this; घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; प्रतिघाताय (pratighātāya) - for destruction; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen;]
(Certainly, this impure mind of mine, which has engaged in unrighteousness, its terrible fruit is seen for destruction.)

(He, I today to Mahadeva take refuge, shelter, lord. Divine punishment this terrible he indeed my will destroy.)
Today, I take refuge in Mahadeva, the great lord. He will indeed destroy this terrible divine punishment of mine.
कपर्दिनं प्रपद्याथ देवदेवमुमापतिम्। कपालमालिनं रुद्रं भगनेत्रहरं हरम् ॥१०-६-३३॥
kapardinaṃ prapadyātha devadevamumāpatiṃ। kapālamālinaṃ rudraṃ bhaganetraharaṃ haram ॥10-6-33॥
[कपर्दिनम् (kapardinam) - the matted-haired one; प्रपद्य (prapadya) - having sought refuge; अथ (atha) - then; देवदेवम् (devadevam) - the god of gods; उमा (umā) - Umā; पतिम् (patim) - the husband; कपालमालिनम् (kapālamālinam) - one adorned with a garland of skulls; रुद्रम् (rudram) - Rudra; भग (bhaga) - Bhaga; नेत्र (netra) - eye; हरम् (haram) - the destroyer;]
(Having sought refuge in the matted-haired one, the god of gods, the husband of Umā, the one adorned with a garland of skulls, Rudra, the destroyer of Bhaga's eye, Hara.)
Then, having sought refuge in Kapardin, the god of gods, the husband of Umā, the skull-garlanded Rudra, the destroyer of Bhaga's eye, Hara.
स हि देवोऽत्यगाद्देवांस्तपसा विक्रमेण च। तस्माच्छरणमभ्येष्ये गिरिशं शूलपाणिनम् ॥१०-६-३४॥
sa hi devo’tyagād devāṃs tapasā vikrameṇa ca। tasmāccharaṇam abhyeṣye giriśaṃ śūlapāṇinam ॥10-6-34॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; अत्यगात् (atyagāt) - surpassed; देवान् (devān) - the gods; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; विक्रमेण (vikrameṇa) - by prowess; च (ca) - and; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; अभ्येष्ये (abhyeṣye) - I shall seek; गिरिशम् (giriśam) - Giriśa (Śiva); शूलपाणिनम् (śūlapāṇinam) - the wielder of the trident;]
(He indeed, the god, surpassed the gods by austerity and by prowess; therefore, I shall seek refuge in Giriśa, the wielder of the trident.)
