दिष्ट्या ते प्रतिकर्तव्ये मतिर्जातेयमच्युत। न त्वा वारयितुं शक्तो वज्रपाणिरपि स्वयम् ॥१०-४-१॥
diṣṭyā te pratikartavye matirjāteyamacyuta। na tvā vārayituṃ śakto vajrapāṇirapi svayam ॥10-4-1॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - fortunately; ते (te) - your; प्रतिकर्तव्ये (pratikartavye) - in counteraction; मतिः (matiḥ) - intention; जाता (jātā) - arisen; इयम् (iyam) - this; अच्युत (acyuta) - O infallible one; न (na) - not; त्वा (tvā) - you; वारयितुम् (vārayitum) - to stop; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - able; वज्रपाणिः (vajrapāṇiḥ) - Indra; अपि (api) - even; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself;]
(Fortunately, your intention to counteract has arisen, O infallible one. Not even Indra himself is able to stop you.)
"O infallible one, it is fortunate that this intention to counteract has arisen in you. Not even Indra, who wields the thunderbolt, can stop you himself."
अनुयास्यावहे त्वां तु प्रभाते सहितावुभौ। अद्य रात्रौ विश्रमस्व विमुक्तकवचध्वजः ॥१०-४-२॥
anuyāsyāvahē tvāṃ tu prabhātē sahitāvubhau। adya rātrau viśramasva vimuktakavacadhvajaḥ ॥10-4-2॥

(I, Kritavarma and Satyaki will follow you, armed and mounted on chariots, going towards the enemies.)

आवाभ्यां सहितः शत्रूञ्श्वोऽसि हन्ता समागमे। विक्रम्य रथिनां श्रेष्ठ पाञ्चालान्सपदानुगान् ॥१०-४-४॥
āvābhyāṃ sahitaḥ śatrūñśvo'si hantā samāgame। vikramya rathināṃ śreṣṭha pāñcālānsapadānugān ॥10-4-4॥

शक्तस्त्वमसि विक्रान्तुं विश्रमस्व निशामिमाम्। चिरं ते जाग्रतस्तात स्वप तावन्निशामिमाम् ॥१०-४-५॥

(You are capable of acting, rest this night. Your wakefulness has been long, dear, sleep until this night.)
You have the strength to act, but rest for this night. You have been awake for a long time, dear, so sleep until this night passes.
विश्रान्तश्च विनिद्रश्च स्वस्थचित्तश्च मानद। समेत्य समरे शत्रून्वधिष्यसि न संशयः ॥१०-४-६॥
viśrāntaśca vinidraśca svasthacittaśca mānada। sametya samare śatrūnvadhiṣyasi na saṃśayaḥ ॥10-4-6॥

(Rested and awake and calm-minded, O giver of honor, having assembled in battle, you will slay the enemies, no doubt.)

न हि त्वा रथिनां श्रेष्ठ प्रगृहीतवरायुधम्। जेतुमुत्सहते कश्चिदपि देवेषु पावकिः ॥१०-४-७॥
na hi tvā rathināṃ śreṣṭha pragṛhītavarāyudham। jetumutsahate kaścidapi deveṣu pāvakiḥ ॥10-4-7॥

(For indeed, no one among the gods dares to conquer you, the best of charioteers, holding an excellent weapon.)

कृपेण सहितं यान्तं युक्तं च कृतवर्मणा। को द्रौणिं युधि संरब्धं योधयेदपि देवराट् ॥१०-४-८॥
kṛpeṇa sahitaṃ yāntaṃ yuktaṃ ca kṛtavarmaṇā। ko drauṇiṃ yudhi saṃrabdhaṃ yodhayedapi devarāṭ ॥10-4-8॥
[कृपेण (kṛpeṇa) - with Kṛpa; सहितं (sahitaṃ) - together; यान्तं (yāntaṃ) - going; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - united; च (ca) - and; कृतवर्मणा (kṛtavarmaṇā) - with Kṛtavarman; कः (kaḥ) - who; द्रौणिं (drauṇiṃ) - Drauṇi; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; संरब्धं (saṃrabdhaṃ) - excited; योधयेत् (yodhayet) - could fight; अपि (api) - even; देवराट् (devarāṭ) - the king of gods;]
(Who could fight even the excited Drauṇi in battle, going together with Kṛpa and united with Kṛtavarman, even the king of gods?)
Who could possibly face the fierce Drauṇi in battle, accompanied by Kṛpa and allied with Kṛtavarman, not even the king of gods?
ते वयं परिविश्रान्ता विनिद्रा विगतज्वराः। प्रभातायां रजन्यां वै निहनिष्याम शात्रवान् ॥१०-४-९॥
te vayaṁ pariviśrāntā vinidrā vigatajvarāḥ। prabhātāyāṁ rajanyāṁ vai nihaniṣyāma śātravān ॥10-4-9॥
[ते (te) - they; वयम् (vayam) - we; परिविश्रान्ताः (pariviśrāntāḥ) - rested; विनिद्राः (vinidrāḥ) - sleepless; विगतज्वराः (vigatajvarāḥ) - free from fever; प्रभातायाम् (prabhātāyām) - at dawn; रजन्याम् (rajanyām) - at night; वै (vai) - indeed; निहनिष्याम (nihaniṣyāma) - we shall slay; शात्रवान् (śātravān) - enemies;]

तव ह्यस्त्राणि दिव्यानि मम चैव न संशयः। सात्वतोऽपि महेष्वासो नित्यं युद्धेषु कोविदः ॥१०-४-१०॥
tava hyastrāṇi divyāni mama caiva na saṃśayaḥ। sātvato'pi maheṣvāso nityaṃ yuddheṣu kovidaḥ ॥10-4-10॥
[तव (tava) - your; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; मम (mama) - my; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - certainly; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; सात्वतः (sātvataḥ) - Sātvata; अपि (api) - also; महेष्वासः (maheṣvāsaḥ) - great archer; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; युद्धेषु (yuddheṣu) - in battles; कोविदः (kovidaḥ) - skilled;]

te vayaṃ sahitāstāta sarvāñśatrūnsamāgatān। prasahya samare hatvā prītiṃ prāpsyāma puṣkalām ॥ viśramasva tvamavyagraḥ svapa cemaṃ niśāṃ sukham ॥10-4-11॥

(They, we together, dear father, all enemies assembled, by overpowering in battle having killed, joy we shall obtain abundant. Rest you without worry, sleep and this night comfortably.)

अहं च कृतवर्मा च प्रयान्तं त्वां नरोत्तम। अनुयास्याव सहितौ धन्विनौ परतापिनौ ॥ रथिनं त्वरया यान्तं रथावास्थाय दंशितौ ॥१०-४-१२॥

(I and Kritavarma, O best of men, will follow you, departing together as mighty archers, mounted on chariots, adorned, with speed, going as charioteers.)

स गत्वा शिबिरं तेषां नाम विश्राव्य चाहवे। ततः कर्तासि शत्रूणां युध्यतां कदनं महत् ॥१०-४-१३॥
sa gatvā śibiraṃ teṣāṃ nāma viśrāvya cāhave। tataḥ kartāsi śatrūṇāṃ yudhyatāṃ kadanaṃ mahat ॥10-4-13॥
[स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; शिबिरं (śibiraṃ) - camp; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - their; नाम (nāma) - name; विश्राव्य (viśrāvya) - announcing; च (ca) - and; अहवे (ahave) - in battle; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कर्तासि (kartāsi) - you will cause; शत्रूणां (śatrūṇāṃ) - of enemies; युध्यतां (yudhyatāṃ) - fighting; कदनं (kadanaṃ) - slaughter; महत् (mahat) - great;]

त्वं हि शक्तो रणे जेतुं पाञ्चालानां वरूथिनीम्। दैत्यसेनामिव क्रुद्धः सर्वदानवसूदनः ॥१०-४-१५॥
tvaṁ hi śakto raṇe jetuṁ pāñcālānāṁ varūthinīm। daityasenāmiva kruddhaḥ sarvadānavasūdanaḥ ॥10-4-15॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; पाञ्चालानाम् (pāñcālānām) - of the Pāñcālas; वरूथिनीम् (varūthinīm) - army; दैत्यसेनाम् (daityasenām) - demon army; इव (iva) - like; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; सर्वदानवसूदनः (sarvadānavasūdanaḥ) - destroyer of all demons;]
(You are indeed capable of conquering the army of the Pāñcālas in battle, like the angry destroyer of all demons conquers the demon army.)
You are truly capable of defeating the Pāñcāla army in battle, just as the furious destroyer of all demons defeats the demon army.
मया त्वां सहितं सङ्ख्ये गुप्तं च कृतवर्मणा। न सहेत विभुः साक्षाद्वज्रपाणिरपि स्वयम् ॥१०-४-१६॥
mayā tvāṃ sahitaṃ saṅkhye guptaṃ ca kṛtavarmaṇā। na saheta vibhuḥ sākṣādvajrapāṇirapi svayam ॥10-4-16॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; सहितं (sahitaṃ) - together; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; गुप्तं (guptaṃ) - protected; च (ca) - and; कृतवर्मणा (kṛtavarmaṇā) - by Kṛtavarmā; न (na) - not; सहेत (saheta) - could withstand; विभुः (vibhuḥ) - the powerful one; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; वज्रपाणिः (vajrapāṇiḥ) - Indra; अपि (api) - even; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself;]
(By me, you, together in battle, protected and by Kṛtavarmā, not could withstand the powerful one directly Indra even himself.)
Even Indra himself, the powerful one, could not withstand you and me together in battle, protected by Kṛtavarmā.
न चाहं समरे तात कृतवर्मा तथैव च। अनिर्जित्य रणे पाण्डून्व्यपयास्याव कर्हिचित् ॥१०-४-१७॥
na cāhaṃ samare tāta kṛtavarmā tathaiva ca। anirjitya raṇe pāṇḍūnvyapayāsyāva karhicit ॥10-4-17॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; समरे (samare) - in battle; तात (tāta) - dear father; कृतवर्मा (kṛtavarmā) - Kritavarma; तथैव (tathaiva) - also; च (ca) - and; अनिर्जित्य (anirjitya) - without conquering; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; पाण्डून् (pāṇḍūn) - the Pandavas; व्यपयास्याव (vyapayāsyāva) - shall retreat; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - ever;]
(Neither I nor Kritavarma, dear father, shall ever retreat in battle without conquering the Pandavas.)
Dear father, neither I nor Kritavarma will ever retreat from battle without first defeating the Pandavas.
हत्वा च समरे क्षुद्रान्पाञ्चालान्पाण्डुभिः सह। निवर्तिष्यामहे सर्वे हता वा स्वर्गगा वयम् ॥१०-४-१८॥
hatvā ca samare kṣudrānpāñcālānpāṇḍubhiḥ saha। nivartiṣyāmahe sarve hatā vā svargagā vayam ॥10-4-18॥
[हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; च (ca) - and; समरे (samare) - in battle; क्षुद्रान् (kṣudrān) - the petty ones; पाञ्चालान् (pāñcālān) - the Panchalas; पाण्डुभिः (pāṇḍubhiḥ) - with the Pandavas; सह (saha) - together; निवर्तिष्यामहे (nivartiṣyāmahe) - we shall return; सर्वे (sarve) - all; हता (hatā) - killed; वा (vā) - or; स्वर्गगा (svargagā) - gone to heaven; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Having killed the petty ones, the Panchalas, together with the Pandavas in battle, we shall all return, or we are killed and gone to heaven.)
After killing the petty Panchalas along with the Pandavas in battle, we shall all return, or if we are killed, we shall ascend to heaven.
सर्वोपायैः सहायास्ते प्रभाते वयमेव हि। सत्यमेतन्महाबाहो प्रब्रवीमि तवानघ ॥१०-४-१९॥
sarvopāyaiḥ sahāyāste prabhāte vayameva hi। satyametanmahābāho prabravīmi tavānagha ॥10-4-19॥

(By all means, your helpers, in the morning, we indeed certainly. This truth, O mighty-armed one, I declare to you, O sinless one.)

एवमुक्तस्ततो द्रौणिर्मातुलेन हितं वचः। अब्रवीन्मातुलं राजन्क्रोधादुद्वृत्य लोचने ॥१०-४-२०॥
evamuktastato drauṇirmātulena hitaṃ vacaḥ। abravīnmātulaṃ rājnkrodhādudvṛtya locane ॥10-4-20॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Drona's son; मातुलेन (mātulena) - by the maternal uncle; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; मातुलम् (mātulam) - to the maternal uncle; राजन् (rājan) - O king; क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - with anger; उद्वृत्य (udvṛtya) - rolling; लोचने (locane) - eyes;]
(Thus spoken, then Drona's son said to his maternal uncle, O king, with anger, rolling his eyes.)
Thus addressed by his maternal uncle with beneficial words, Drona's son, rolling his eyes in anger, spoke to his uncle, O king.
आतुरस्य कुतो निद्रा नरस्यामर्षितस्य च। अर्थांश्चिन्तयतश्चापि कामयानस्य वा पुनः ॥१०-४-२१॥
āturasya kuto nidrā narasyāmarṣitasya ca। arthāṃścintayataścāpi kāmayānasya vā punaḥ ॥10-4-21॥
[आतुरस्य (āturasya) - of the distressed; कुतः (kutaḥ) - where; निद्रा (nidrā) - sleep; नरस्य (narasya) - of the man; अमर्षितस्य (amarṣitasya) - of the angry; च (ca) - and; अर्थान् (arthān) - objects; चिन्तयतः (cintayataḥ) - of the one who is thinking; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कामयानस्य (kāmayānasya) - of the one who is desiring; वा (vā) - or; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Where is sleep for the distressed, or for the angry man, or for the one who is thinking of objects, or for the one who is desiring again?)
How can a distressed or angry person, or one who is constantly thinking about objects or desires, find sleep?
तदिदं समनुप्राप्तं पश्य मेऽद्य चतुष्टयम्। यस्य भागश्चतुर्थो मे स्वप्नमह्नाय नाशयेत् ॥१०-४-२२॥
tadidaṁ samanuprāptaṁ paśya me'dya catuṣṭayam। yasya bhāgaścaturtho me svapnamahnāya nāśayet ॥10-4-22॥

(That this attained, see my today fourfold. Whose part fourth my dream by day destroys.)
Behold today my fourfold attainment, whose fourth part destroys my dream by day.
किं नाम दुःखं लोकेऽस्मिन्पितुर्वधमनुस्मरन्। हृदयं निर्दहन्मेऽद्य रात्र्यहानि न शाम्यति ॥१०-४-२३॥
kiṁ nāma duḥkhaṁ loke'smin pitur vadham anusmaran। hṛdayaṁ nirdahan me'dya rātryahāni na śāmyati ॥10-4-23॥

(What indeed is the sorrow in this world, remembering the killing of my father, burning my heart, today, the nights and days do not cease.)
"What is the sorrow in this world, as I remember my father's killing, my heart burns, and today, the nights and days do not bring peace."
यथा च निहतः पापैः पिता मम विशेषतः। प्रत्यक्षमपि ते सर्वं तन्मे मर्माणि कृन्तति ॥१०-४-२४॥
yathā ca nihataḥ pāpaiḥ pitā mama viśeṣataḥ। pratyakṣamapi te sarvaṃ tanme marmāṇi kṛntati ॥10-4-24॥

कथं हि मादृशो लोके मुहूर्तमपि जीवति। द्रोणो हतेति यद्वाचः पाञ्चालानां शृणोम्यहम् ॥१०-४-२५॥
kathaṁ hi mādṛśo loke muhūrtamapi jīvati। droṇo hateti yadvācaḥ pāñcālānāṁ śṛṇomyaham ॥10-4-25॥

(How indeed can someone like me live in the world even for a moment, when I hear the words of the Pāñcālas saying that Droṇa is killed?)
How can someone like me continue to live even for a moment in this world, upon hearing the words of the Pāñcālas that Droṇa has been slain?
दृष्टद्युम्नमहत्वाजौ नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे। स मे पितृवधाद्वध्यः पाञ्चाला ये च सङ्गताः ॥१०-४-२६॥
dṛṣṭadyumnamahatvājau nāhaṃ jīvitumutsahe। sa me pitṛvadhādvadhyaḥ pāñcālā ye ca saṅgatāḥ ॥10-4-26॥
[दृष्टद्युम्न (dṛṣṭadyumna) - Dhrishtadyumna; महत्वाजौ (mahatvājau) - greatness in battle; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able; सः (saḥ) - he; मे (me) - my; पितृवधात् (pitṛvadhāt) - from father's killing; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - to be killed; पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - Panchalas; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; सङ्गताः (saṅgatāḥ) - assembled;]
(Due to Dhrishtadyumna's greatness in battle, I am not able to live. He, who killed my father, and the assembled Panchalas are to be killed.)

vilāpo bhagnasakthasya yastu rājño mayā śrutaḥ। sa punarhṛdayaṃ kasya krūrasyaapi na nirdahet ॥10-4-27॥

यश्चायं मित्रपक्षो मे मयि जीवति निर्जितः। शोकं मे वर्धयत्येष वारिवेग इवार्णवम् ॥ एकाग्रमनसो मेऽद्य कुतो निद्रा कुतः सुखम् ॥१०-४-२९॥

(Who is this friend of mine, living in me, defeated? This sorrow increases in me like the water current in the ocean. Where is sleep, where is happiness for my focused mind today?)
This friend of mine, though defeated, lives within me, causing my sorrow to swell like the ocean's tide. Today, with a mind so focused, where can I find sleep or happiness?
वासुदेवार्जुनाभ्यां हि तानहं परिरक्षितान्। अविषह्यतमान्मन्ये महेन्द्रेणापि मातुल ॥१०-४-३०॥
vāsudevārjunābhyāṃ hi tānahaṃ parirakṣitān। aviṣahyatamān manye mahendreṇāpi mātula ॥10-4-30॥

न चास्मि शक्यः संयन्तुमस्मात्कार्यात्कथञ्चन। न तं पश्यामि लोकेऽस्मिन्यो मां कार्यान्निवर्तयेत् ॥ इति मे निश्चिता बुद्धिरेषा साधुमता च मे ॥१०-४-३१॥
na cāsmi śakyaḥ saṃyantumasmātkāryātkathañcana। na taṃ paśyāmi loke'sminyo māṃ kāryānnivartayet ॥ iti me niścitā buddhireṣā sādhumatā ca me ॥10-4-31॥

(I am not capable of being restrained from this duty in any way. I do not see anyone in this world who can stop me from my duties. Thus, this is my determined intellect and my goodness.)
I am determined that no one in this world can restrain me from my duties, and this conviction is my strength and virtue.
वार्त्तिकैः कथ्यमानस्तु मित्राणां मे पराभवः। पाण्डवानां च विजयो हृदयं दहतीव मे ॥१०-४-३२॥
vārttikaiḥ kathyamānastu mitrāṇāṃ me parābhavaḥ। pāṇḍavānāṃ ca vijayo hṛdayaṃ dahatīva me ॥10-4-32॥

अहं तु कदनं कृत्वा शत्रूणामद्य सौप्तिके। ततो विश्रमिता चैव स्वप्ता च विगतज्वरः ॥१०-४-३३॥
ahaṁ tu kadanaṁ kṛtvā śatrūṇām adya sauptike। tato viśramitā caiva svaptā ca vigatajvaraḥ ॥10-4-33॥
