tasyāṃ rātryāṃ vyatītāyāṃ dhṛṣṭadyumnasya sārathiḥ। śaśaṃsa dharmarājāya sauptike kadanaṃ kṛtam ॥10-10-1॥

(In that night having passed, the charioteer of Dhṛṣṭadyumna reported to Dharmarāja the slaughter done in the night attack.)

Your camp was destroyed at night by Kṛtavarman, the cruel Gautama (Kṛpa), and the wicked Aśvatthāman.
एतैर्नरगजाश्वानां प्रासशक्तिपरश्वधैः। सहस्राणि निकृन्तद्भिर्निःशेषं ते बलं कृतम् ॥१०-१०-४॥
etair naragajāśvānāṃ prāśaśaktiparaśvadhaiḥ। sahasrāṇi nikṛntadbhir niḥśeṣaṃ te balaṃ kṛtam ॥10-10-4॥

(By these, with spears, darts, and battle-axes, thousands of men, elephants, and horses, cutting down completely, their army was made (destroyed).)

छिद्यमानस्य महतो वनस्येव परश्वधैः। शुश्रुवे सुमहाञ्शब्दो बलस्य तव भारत ॥१०-१०-५॥

अहमेकोऽवशिष्टस्तु तस्मात्सैन्यान्महीपते। मुक्तः कथञ्चिद्धर्मात्मन्व्यग्रस्य कृतवर्मणः ॥१०-१०-६॥

(I alone but remaining from that armies, O king, released somehow, O righteous one, being distracted by Kṛtavarman.)
O king, I alone survived from those armies, having somehow escaped while Kṛtavarman was distracted, O righteous one.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वाक्यमशिवं कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। पपात मह्यां दुर्धर्षः पुत्रशोकसमन्वितः ॥१०-१०-७॥
tac chrutvā vākyam aśivaṃ kuntī-putro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। papāta mahyāṃ durdharṣaḥ putra-śoka-samanvitaḥ ॥10-10-7॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अशिवम् (aśivam) - inauspicious; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntī-putraḥ) - Kunti's son; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; पपात (papāta) - fell; महि्याम् (mahyām) - on the ground; दुर्धर्षः (durdharṣaḥ) - the unshakable one; पुत्रशोकसमन्वितः (putra-śoka-samanvitaḥ) - overcome with grief for his son;]
(Having heard those inauspicious words, Kunti's son Yudhishthira, the unshakable one, fell to the ground, overcome with grief for his son.)
When Yudhishthira, Kunti's son, heard those ominous words, the steadfast hero collapsed to the ground, overwhelmed by grief for his son.
तं पतन्तमभिक्रम्य परिजग्राह सात्यकिः। भीमसेनोऽर्जुनश्चैव माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ॥१०-१०-८॥
taṃ patantam abhikramya parijagrāha sātyakiḥ। bhīmaseno'rjunaścaiva mādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau ॥10-10-8॥

लब्धचेतास्तु कौन्तेयः शोकविह्वलया गिरा। जित्वा शत्रूञ्जितः पश्चात्पर्यदेवयदातुरः ॥१०-१०-९॥
labdhacetāstu kaunteyaḥ śokavihvalayā girā। jitvā śatrūñjitaḥ paścāt paryadevayadāturaḥ ॥10-10-9॥
[लब्ध (labdha) - having regained; चेताः (cetāḥ) - consciousness; तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - the son of Kunti; शोकविह्वलया (śokavihvalayā) - with a voice choked with grief; गिरा (girā) - with speech; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; जितः (jitaḥ) - the conqueror; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; पर्यदेवयत् (paryadevayat) - lamented; आतुरः (āturaḥ) - distressed;]
(But having regained consciousness, the son of Kunti, with a voice choked with grief, having conquered his enemies, the conqueror, afterwards lamented, distressed.)

दुर्विदा गतिरर्थानामपि ये दिव्यचक्षुषः। जीयमाना जयन्त्यन्ये जयमाना वयं जिताः ॥१०-१०-१०॥
dur-vidā gatir-arthānām-api ye divya-cakṣuṣaḥ। jīyamānā jayanti anye jayamānā vayaṃ jitāḥ ॥10-10-10॥
[दुर्विदा (dur-vidā) - difficult to know; गतिः (gatiḥ) - the course; अर्थानाम् (arthānām) - of things; अपि (api) - even; ये (ye) - those who; दिव्यचक्षुषः (divya-cakṣuṣaḥ) - with divine vision; जीयमाना (jīyamānā) - being conquered; जयन्ति (jayanti) - conquer; अन्ये (anye) - others; जयमाना (jayamānā) - conquering; वयम् (vayam) - we; जिताः (jitāḥ) - are conquered;]
(The course of things is difficult to know, even for those with divine vision. Others, being conquered, conquer; we, conquering, are conquered.)
The way of events is hard to discern, even for those with divine sight. Sometimes, those who seem to be defeated actually win, and we, though victorious, are truly overcome.
हत्वा भ्रातॄन्वयस्यांश्च पितॄन्पुत्रान्सुहृद्गणान्। बन्धूनमात्यान्पौत्रांश्च जित्वा सर्वाञ्जिता वयम् ॥१०-१०-११॥
hatvā bhrātṝn vayasyāṁś ca pitṝn putrān suhṛd-gaṇān | bandhūn amātyān pautrāṁś ca jitvā sarvān jitā vayam ॥10-10-11॥
[हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; वयस्यान् (vayasyān) - friends of the same age; च (ca) - and; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - fathers; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; सुहृद्गणान् (suhṛd-gaṇān) - groups of well-wishers; बन्धून् (bandhūn) - relatives; अमात्यान् (amātyān) - ministers; पौत्रान् (pautrān) - grandsons; च (ca) - and; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; जिताः (jitāḥ) - conquerors; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Having killed brothers, friends of the same age, fathers, sons, groups of well-wishers, relatives, ministers, grandsons, and having conquered all, we are conquerors.)
If we kill brothers, friends, fathers, sons, well-wishers, relatives, ministers, and grandsons, and conquer everyone, what victory is left for us?
अनर्थो ह्यर्थसङ्काशस्तथार्थोऽनर्थदर्शनः। जयोऽयमजयाकारो जयस्तस्मात्पराजयः ॥१०-१०-१२॥
anartho hy arthasaṅkāśas tathārtho'narthadarśanaḥ। jayo'yam ajayākāro jay as tasmāt parājayaḥ ॥10-10-12॥
[अनर्थः (anarthaḥ) - misfortune; हि (hi) - indeed; अर्थसङ्काशः (arthasaṅkāśaḥ) - appearing as fortune; तथा (tathā) - similarly; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - fortune; अनर्थदर्शनः (anarthadarśanaḥ) - appearing as misfortune; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; अयम् (ayam) - this; अजयाकारः (ajayākāraḥ) - having the form of defeat; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; पराजयः (parājayaḥ) - defeat;]
(Misfortune indeed appearing as fortune, similarly fortune appearing as misfortune. This victory has the form of defeat; therefore, victory is defeat.)
Sometimes, misfortune appears as fortune and fortune appears as misfortune. This victory seems like defeat; therefore, victory can actually be defeat.
यं जित्वा तप्यते पश्चादापन्न इव दुर्मतिः। कथं मन्येत विजयं ततो जिततरः परैः ॥१०-१०-१३॥
yaṃ jitvā tapyate paścād āpanna iva durmatiḥ। kathaṃ manyeta vijayaṃ tato jitataraḥ paraiḥ ॥10-10-13॥
[यं (yaṃ) - whom; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; तप्यते (tapyate) - is tormented; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; आपन्न (āpanna) - afflicted; इव (iva) - as if; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - a person of evil mind; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; मन्येत (manyeta) - could consider; विजयम् (vijayam) - victory; ततः (tataḥ) - then; जिततरः (jitataraḥ) - more victorious; परैः (paraiḥ) - than others;]
(Whom, having conquered, one is tormented afterwards, as if afflicted, a person of evil mind—how could he consider victory, then, as being more victorious than others?)
If, after conquering someone, a person of evil mind is tormented as if afflicted, how could he consider that victory to be greater than victories over others?
येषामर्थाय पापस्य धिग्जयस्य सुहृद्वधे। निर्जितैरप्रमत्तैर्हि विजिता जितकाशिनः ॥१०-१०-१४॥
yeṣām arthāya pāpasya dhig-jayasya suhṛd-vadhe | nirjitair apramattair hi vijitā jitakāśinaḥ ॥10-10-14॥
[येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; अर्थाय (arthāya) - for the sake of; पापस्य (pāpasya) - of sin; धिक् (dhik) - condemnation; जयस्य (jayasya) - of victory; सुहृत् (suhṛt) - of friends; वधे (vadhe) - in the killing; निर्जितैः (nirjitaiḥ) - by those who have conquered; अप्रमत्तैः (apramattaiḥ) - by those who are not careless; हि (hi) - indeed; विजिताः (vijitāḥ) - are conquered; जितकाशिनः (jitakāśinaḥ) - those who desire victory;]
(Of whom, for the sake of sin, condemnation of victory, in the killing of friends; by those who have conquered, by those who are not careless indeed, are conquered, those who desire victory.)
Those for whom victory is achieved by sinful acts and the killing of friends—such conquerors, though victorious, are truly defeated, for they are overcome by their own desire for victory.
कर्णिनालीकदंष्ट्रस्य खड्गजिह्वस्य संयुगे। चापव्यात्तस्य रौद्रस्य ज्यातलस्वननादिनः ॥१०-१०-१५॥
karṇinālīka-daṃṣṭrasya khaḍga-jihvasya saṃyuge। cāpa-vyāttasya raudrasya jyā-tala-svananādinaḥ ॥10-10-15॥
[कर्णिनालीकदंष्ट्रस्य (karṇinālīka-daṃṣṭrasya) - of one whose fangs are like the tusks of an elephant; खड्गजिह्वस्य (khaḍga-jihvasya) - whose tongue is like a sword; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; चापव्यात्तस्य (cāpa-vyāttasya) - whose bow is drawn; रौद्रस्य (raudrasya) - of the fierce one; ज्यातलस्वननादिनः (jyā-tala-svananādinaḥ) - resounding with the twang of the bowstring;]
(Of one whose fangs are like the tusks of an elephant, whose tongue is like a sword, in battle, whose bow is drawn, of the fierce one, resounding with the twang of the bowstring.)
In battle, the fierce one, whose fangs were like elephant tusks and whose tongue was like a sword, with his bow drawn, resounded with the twang of the bowstring.
क्रुद्धस्य नरसिंहस्य सङ्ग्रामेष्वपलायिनः। ये व्यमुच्यन्त कर्णस्य प्रमादात्त इमे हताः ॥१०-१०-१६॥
kruddhasya nara-siṃhasya saṅgrāmeṣu apalāyinaḥ। ye vyamucyanta karṇasya pramādāt te ime hatāḥ ॥10-10-16॥
[क्रुद्धस्य (kruddhasya) - of the enraged; नरसिंहस्य (nara-siṃhasya) - of the lion among men; सङ्ग्रामेषु (saṅgrāmeṣu) - in battles; अपलायिनः (apalāyinaḥ) - who did not flee; ये (ye) - who; व्यमुच्यन्त (vyamucyanta) - were released; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - by Karna; प्रमादात् (pramādāt) - due to negligence; ते (te) - they; इमे (ime) - these; हताः (hatāḥ) - were slain;]
(Of the enraged lion among men, those who did not flee in battles, who were released by Karna due to negligence, these here were slain.)
Those who did not flee in battle from the enraged lion among men, and whom Karna released through his negligence, these are the ones who have now been slain.
रथह्रदं शरवर्षोर्मिमन्तं; रत्नाचितं वाहनराजियुक्तम्। शक्त्यृष्टिमीनध्वजनागनक्रं; शरासनावर्तमहेषुफेनम् ॥१०-१०-१७॥
rathahradaṃ śaravarṣormimantaṃ; ratnācitaṃ vāhanarājiyuktam। śaktyṛṣṭimīnadhvajanāganakraṃ; śarāsanāvartamaheṣuphenam ॥10-10-17॥
[रथह्रदं (rathahradam) - chariot-lake; शरवर्ष (śaravarṣa) - of arrow-rain; उर्मिमन्तं (urmimantam) - having waves; रत्नाचितं (ratnācitam) - adorned with jewels; वाहनराजियुक्तम् (vāhanarājiyuktam) - joined with rows of vehicles; शक्त्यृष्टिमीन (śaktyṛṣṭimīna) - with spears and lances as fish; ध्वजनागनक्रं (dhvajanāganakram) - with banners, elephants, and crocodiles; शरासनावर्त (śarāsanāvarta) - with bows as whirlpools; महेषुफेनम् (maheṣuphenam) - with great arrows as foam;]
(A chariot-lake, having waves of arrow-rain; adorned with jewels, joined with rows of vehicles; with spears and lances as fish, with banners, elephants, and crocodiles; with bows as whirlpools, with great arrows as foam.)
It was like a lake of chariots, its waves formed by showers of arrows; adorned with jewels and lined with rows of vehicles; spears and lances appeared as fish, banners, elephants, and crocodiles moved within it; bows formed its whirlpools, and great arrows its foam.
सङ्ग्रामचन्द्रोदयवेगवेलं; द्रोणार्णवं ज्यातलनेमिघोषम्। ये तेरुरुच्चावचशस्त्रनौभि; स्ते राजपुत्रा निहताः प्रमादात् ॥१०-१०-१८॥
saṅgrāmacandrodaya-vega-velaṃ; droṇārṇavaṃ jyātala-nemi-ghoṣam। ye terur uccāvaca-śastra-naubhiḥ; te rājaputrā nihatāḥ pramādāt ॥10-10-18॥
[सङ्ग्राम (saṅgrāma) - battle; चन्द्र (candra) - moon; उदय (udaya) - rise; वेग (vega) - speed; वेलं (velaṃ) - wave; द्रोण (droṇa) - Droṇa; अर्णवम् (arṇavam) - ocean; ज्या (jyā) - bowstring; तल (tala) - surface; नेमि (nemi) - wheel-rim; घोषम् (ghoṣam) - sound; ये (ye) - those; तेरुः (teruḥ) - crossed; उच्चावच (uccāvaca) - high and low; शस्त्र (śastra) - weapons; नौभिः (naubhiḥ) - with boats; ते (te) - they; राजपुत्राः (rājaputrāḥ) - princes; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - slain; प्रमादात् (pramādāt) - due to negligence;]
(The wave of the speed of the rising moon of battle; the ocean of Droṇa, the sound of bowstring and wheel-rim. Those who crossed with boats of high and low weapons; those princes were slain due to negligence.)
The princes, who crossed the ocean of Droṇa's battle—whose waves were the speed of the rising moon, and whose sounds were the bowstrings and wheel-rims of chariots, using boats of various weapons—were slain due to their own negligence.
न हि प्रमादात्परमोऽस्ति कश्चि; द्वधो नराणामिह जीवलोके। प्रमत्तमर्था हि नरं समन्ता; त्त्यजन्त्यनर्थाश्च समाविशन्ति ॥१०-१०-१९॥

(Not indeed is there anything greater than negligence; here in the world of men, nothing is more dangerous. Objects (of desire) indeed abandon a negligent man from all sides; and misfortunes enter.)
There is nothing more dangerous than negligence; in this world of men, nothing is worse. When a man is negligent, all desirable things leave him from every side, and misfortunes come upon him.
ध्वजोत्तमाग्रोच्छ्रितधूमकेतुं; शरार्चिषं कोपमहासमीरम्। महाधनुर्ज्यातलनेमिघोषं; तनुत्रनानाविधशस्त्रहोमम् ॥१०-१०-२०॥

I grieve for Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); how could I not for the virtuous one? Immersed in an ocean of sorrow, she may perish today. Having heard of her brothers and sons slain, and the aged king of the Pāñcālas, her father, she will surely fall unconscious to the ground and remain there, her body wasted by grief.
