ततो दुर्योधनं दृष्ट्वा गान्धारी शोककर्शिता। सहसा न्यपतद्भूमौ छिन्नेव कदली वने ॥११-१७-१॥
tato duryodhanaṃ dṛṣṭvā gāndhārī śokakarśitā। sahasā nyapatadbhoomau chinneva kadalī vane ॥11-17-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gandhari; शोककर्शिता (śokakarśitā) - emaciated by grief; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; न्यपतत् (nyapatat) - fell down; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; छिन्ना (chinnā) - cut; इव (iva) - like; कदली (kadalī) - banana plant; वने (vane) - in the forest;]
(Then, having seen Duryodhana, Gandhari, emaciated by grief, suddenly fell on the ground like a banana plant cut in the forest.)
Then, seeing Duryodhana, Gandhari, overcome with grief, suddenly collapsed to the ground like a banana plant cut down in the forest.
सा तु लब्ध्वा पुनः सञ्ज्ञां विक्रुश्य च पुनः पुनः। दुर्योधनमभिप्रेक्ष्य शयानं रुधिरोक्षितम् ॥११-१७-२॥
sā tu labdhvā punaḥ sañjñāṃ vikruśya ca punaḥ punaḥ। duryodhanam abhiprekṣya śayānaṃ rudhirokṣitam ॥11-17-2॥

(She but having obtained again consciousness, having cried out and again and again, Duryodhana having looked at lying smeared with blood.)
But she, regaining consciousness, cried out again and again, seeing Duryodhana lying there smeared with blood.
परिष्वज्य च गान्धारी कृपणं पर्यदेवयत्। हा हा पुत्रेति शोकार्ता विललापाकुलेन्द्रिया ॥११-१७-३॥
pariṣvajya ca gāndhārī kṛpaṇaṃ paryadevayat। hā hā putreti śokārtā vilalāpākulendriyā ॥11-17-3॥

(Having embraced, Gandhari lamented the pitiable one all around. "Alas, alas, son!"—thus, afflicted with grief, she wailed, her senses disturbed.)

सुगूढजत्रु विपुलं हारनिष्कनिषेवितम्। वारिणा नेत्रजेनोरः सिञ्चन्ती शोकतापिता ॥ समीपस्थं हृषीकेशमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥११-१७-४॥
sugūḍhajatru vipulaṃ hāraniṣkaniṣevitam। vāriṇā netrajenoraḥ siñcantī śokatāpitā ॥ samīpasthaṃ hṛṣīkeśam idaṃ vacanam abravīt ॥11-17-4॥

(With well-concealed collar-bones, broad, adorned with necklaces and gold coins, her chest was sprinkled with water born from the eyes, afflicted by grief. To Hṛṣīkeśa standing nearby, she spoke this speech.)

उपस्थितेऽस्मिन्सङ्ग्रामे ज्ञातीनां सङ्क्षये विभो। मामयं प्राह वार्ष्णेय प्राञ्जलिर्नृपसत्तमः ॥ अस्मिञ्ज्ञातिसमुद्धर्षे जयमम्बा ब्रवीतु मे ॥११-१७-५॥
upasthite'smin saṅgrāme jñātīnāṃ saṅkṣaye vibho। mām ayaṃ prāha vārṣṇeya prāñjalir nṛpasattamaḥ॥ asmin jñātisamuddharṣe jayam ambā bravītu me॥ 11-17-5॥

(When present in this battle, in the destruction of kinsmen, O lord, to me this said, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, with folded hands, the best among kings. In this great excitement of kin, may mother speak victory to me.)
O lord, when this battle for the destruction of kinsmen was present, the best among kings, with folded hands, said this to me, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi. In this great excitement among kin, may mother grant me victory.
इत्युक्ते जानती सर्वमहं स्वं व्यसनागमम्। अब्रुवं पुरुषव्याघ्र यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः ॥११-१७-६॥
ityukte jānatī sarvamahaṃ svaṃ vyasanāgamam। abruvaṃ puruṣavyāghra yato dharmastato jayaḥ ॥11-17-6॥

(Thus having been said, knowing all my misfortune approaching, I said, O tiger among men, where there is righteousness, from there is victory.)
Thus, when this was said, knowing all my impending misfortune, I said, "O tiger among men, where there is righteousness, there is victory."
यथा न युध्यमानस्त्वं सम्प्रमुह्यसि पुत्रक। ध्रुवं शस्त्रजिताँल्लोकान्प्राप्तास्यमरवद्विभो ॥११-१७-७॥
yathā na yudhyamānas tvaṃ sampramuhyasi putraka। dhruvaṃ śastrajitāṃl lokān prāptāsy amaravad vibho ॥11-17-7॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; how; in which way; न (na) - not; युध्यमानः (yudhyamānaḥ) - fighting; engaging in battle; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सम्प्रमुह्यसि (sampramuhyasi) - you are greatly deluded; you are completely bewildered; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son; dear child; ध्रुवं (dhruvam) - certainly; surely; शस्त्रजितान् (śastrajitān) - won by weapons; conquered by arms; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; realms; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - attained; reached; असि (asi) - you are; अमरवत् (amaravat) - like the immortals; as the gods; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one; O powerful one;]
(As you, not fighting, are greatly deluded, O son, certainly you have attained the worlds won by weapons, like the immortals, O mighty one.)
O dear son, since you are not fighting and are completely bewildered, surely you have attained the worlds conquered by arms, like the gods, O mighty one.
इत्येवमब्रुवं पूर्वं नैनं शोचामि वै प्रभो। धृतराष्ट्रं तु शोचामि कृपणं हतबान्धवम् ॥११-१७-८॥
ityevam abruvaṃ pūrvaṃ nainaṃ śocāmi vai prabho। dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ tu śocāmi kṛpaṇaṃ hatabāndhavam ॥11-17-8॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this manner; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - I spoke; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; न (na) - not; एनम् (enam) - him; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रभो (prabho) - O master; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; तु (tu) - but; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; कृपणम् (kṛpaṇam) - miserable; हतबान्धवम् (hatabāndhavam) - bereft of relatives;]
(Thus in this manner I spoke before, I do not grieve for him indeed, O master; but I grieve for Dhritarashtra, the miserable one bereft of relatives.)
Thus I had spoken before, O master: I do not grieve for him; but I grieve for Dhritarashtra, the pitiable one who has lost his kin.
अमर्षणं युधां श्रेष्ठं कृतास्त्रं युद्धदुर्मदम्। शयानं वीरशयने पश्य माधव मे सुतम् ॥११-१७-९॥
amarṣaṇaṃ yudhāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ kṛtāstraṃ yuddhadurmadam। śayānaṃ vīraśayane paśya mādhava me sutam ॥11-17-9॥
[अमर्षणम् (amarṣaṇam) - not-forbearing; युधाम् (yudhām) - of warriors; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - the best; कृतास्त्रम् (kṛtāstram) - having mastered weapons; युद्धदुर्मदम् (yuddhadurmadam) - arrogant in battle; शयानम् (śayānam) - lying; वीरशयने (vīraśayane) - on the hero's bed; पश्य (paśya) - see; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; मे (me) - my; सुतम् (sutam) - son;]
(See, O Mādhava, my son, not-forbearing, the best of warriors, having mastered weapons, arrogant in battle, lying on the hero's bed.)
O Mādhava, see my son, the best among warriors, intolerant, accomplished in arms, proud in battle, now lying on the hero's bed.
योऽयं मूर्धावसिक्तानामग्रे याति परन्तपः। सोऽयं पांसुषु शेतेऽद्य पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥११-१७-१०॥
yo'yaṃ mūrdhāvasiktānām agre yāti parantapaḥ। so'yaṃ pāṃsuṣu śete'dya paśya kālasya paryayaṃ ॥11-17-10॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; मूर्धा-अवसिक्तानाम् (mūrdhā-avasiktānām) - of those whose heads have been anointed; अग्रे (agre) - at the front; याति (yāti) - goes; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - O scorcher of foes; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; पांसुषु (pāṃsuṣu) - on the dust; शेते (śete) - lies; अद्य (adya) - today; पश्य (paśya) - see; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; पर्ययम् (paryayaṃ) - the change;]
(Who, this one, of those whose heads have been anointed, at the front, goes, O scorcher of foes; he, this one, on the dust, lies, today; see, of time, the change.)
He who once led at the front among the anointed kings, O scorcher of foes, now lies today on the dust; see the change brought by time.
ध्रुवं दुर्योधनो वीरो गतिं नसुलभां गतः। तथा ह्यभिमुखः शेते शयने वीरसेविते ॥११-१७-११॥
dhruvaṃ duryodhanaḥ vīraḥ gatiṃ nasulabhāṃ gataḥ। tathā hy abhimukhaḥ śete śayane vīrasevite ॥11-17-11॥
[ध्रुवं (dhruvam) - certainly; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; गतिं (gatiṃ) - state; न (na) - not; सुलभां (sulabhām) - easily attained; गतः (gataḥ) - has reached; तथा (tathā) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; अभिमुखः (abhimukhaḥ) - facing (the enemy); शेते (śete) - lies; शयने (śayane) - on the bed; वीरसेविते (vīrasevite) - attended by heroes;]
(Certainly, Duryodhana, the hero, has reached a state not easily attained. Thus indeed, facing (the enemy), he lies on the bed attended by heroes.)

यं पुरा पर्युपासीना रमयन्ति महीक्षितः। महीतलस्थं निहतं गृध्रास्तं पर्युपासते ॥११-१७-१२॥
yaṃ purā paryupāsīnā ramayanti mahīkṣitaḥ। mahītalasthaṃ nihataṃ gṛdhrāstaṃ paryupāsate ॥11-17-12॥
[यं (yaṃ) - whom; पुरा (purā) - formerly; पर्युपासीना (paryupāsīnāḥ) - having surrounded and worshipped; रमयन्ति (ramayanti) - delight; महीक्षितः (mahīkṣitaḥ) - kings; महीतलस्थं (mahītalastham) - lying on the earth; निहतं (nihatam) - slain; गृध्राः (gṛdhrāḥ) - vultures; तम् (tam) - him; पर्युपासते (paryupāsate) - surround and attend;]
(Whom formerly having surrounded and worshipped, kings delighted; lying on the earth, slain, vultures him surround and attend.)
The one whom kings once surrounded and delighted in, now, lying slain on the earth, is surrounded and attended by vultures.
यं पुरा व्यजनैरग्र्यैरुपवीजन्ति योषितः। तमद्य पक्षव्यजनैरुपवीजन्ति पक्षिणः ॥११-१७-१३॥
yaṃ purā vyajanair agryair upavījanti yoṣitaḥ। tam adya pakṣavyajanair upavījanti pakṣiṇaḥ ॥11-17-13॥
[यं (yaṃ) - whom; पुरा (purā) - formerly; व्यजनैः (vyajanair) - with fans; अग्र्यैः (agryaiḥ) - excellent; उपवीजन्ति (upavījanti) - fan (verb); योषितः (yoṣitaḥ) - women; तम् (tam) - him; अद्य (adya) - today; पक्षव्यजनैः (pakṣavyajanair) - with fans made of feathers; उपवीजन्ति (upavījanti) - fan (verb); पक्षिणः (pakṣiṇaḥ) - birds;]
(Whom formerly women fanned with excellent fans, him today birds fan with fans made of feathers.)
He who was once fanned by women with excellent fans is now fanned by birds with fans made of feathers.
एष शेते महाबाहुर्बलवान्सत्यविक्रमः। सिंहेनेव द्विपः सङ्ख्ये भीमसेनेन पातितः ॥११-१७-१४॥
eṣa śete mahābāhur balavān satyavikramaḥ। siṃheneva dvipaḥ saṅkhye bhīmasenena pātitaḥ ॥11-17-14॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; शेते (śete) - lies; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; सत्यविक्रमः (satyavikramaḥ) - truly valiant; सिंहेन (siṃhena) - by a lion; इव (iva) - like; द्विपः (dvipaḥ) - an elephant; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhīmasena; पातितः (pātitaḥ) - felled;]
(This mighty-armed, strong, truly valiant one lies, like an elephant felled in battle by a lion, by Bhīmasena.)
This mighty-armed and truly valiant hero lies here, strong as he was, like an elephant struck down in battle by Bhīmasena, just as a lion fells an elephant.
पश्य दुर्योधनं कृष्ण शयानं रुधिरोक्षितम्। निहतं भीमसेनेन गदामुद्यम्य भारत ॥११-१७-१५॥
paśya duryodhanaṃ kṛṣṇa śayānaṃ rudhirokṣitam। nihataṃ bhīmasenena gadāmudyamya bhārata ॥11-17-15॥

akṣauhiṇīr-mahābāhur-daśa caikāṃ ca keśava| anayad-yaḥ purā saṅkhye so'nayān-nidhanaṃ gataḥ ॥11-17-16॥

Here lies Duryodhana, the mighty archer and great chariot-warrior, struck down like a tiger by the lion Bhīmasena.
विदुरं ह्यवमन्यैष पितरं चैव मन्दभाक्। बालो वृद्धावमानेन मन्दो मृत्युवशं गतः ॥११-१७-१८॥
viduraṃ hy avamanyaiṣa pitaraṃ caiva mandabhāk| bālo vṛddhāvamānena mando mṛtyuvaśaṃ gataḥ ॥11-17-18॥
[विदुरम् (viduram) - Vidura; (the wise minister; हि (hi) - indeed; अवमन्य (avamanya) - disregarding; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this one; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; मन्द-भाक् (manda-bhāk) - of dull fortune; बालः (bālaḥ) - the boy; वृद्ध-अवमानेन (vṛddh-avamānena) - by disrespecting elders; मन्दः (mandaḥ) - the dull one; मृत्यु-वशम् (mṛtyu-vaśam) - to the power of death; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone;]
(Indeed, this one, disregarding Vidura and also his father, the boy of dull fortune, by disrespecting elders, the dull one has gone to the power of death.)

निःसपत्ना मही यस्य त्रयोदश समाः स्थिता। स शेते निहतो भूमौ पुत्रो मे पृथिवीपतिः ॥११-१७-१९॥
niḥsapatnā mahī yasya trayodaśa samāḥ sthitā। sa śete nihato bhūmau putro me pṛthivīpatiḥ ॥11-17-19॥

(The earth, without rival wives, for thirteen years remained his. He lies slain on the ground, my son, the lord of the earth.)
For thirteen years, the earth, free from rival claimants, remained under his rule. Now, my son, the lord of the earth, lies slain upon the ground.
अपश्यं कृष्ण पृथिवीं धार्तराष्ट्रानुशासनात्। पूर्णां हस्तिगवाश्वस्य वार्ष्णेय न तु तच्चिरम् ॥११-१७-२०॥
apaśyaṃ kṛṣṇa pṛthivīṃ dhārtarāṣṭrānuśāsanāt। pūrṇāṃ hastigavāśvasya vārṣṇeya na tu tacciram ॥11-17-20॥

इदं कृच्छ्रतरं पश्य पुत्रस्यापि वधान्मम। यदिमाः पर्युपासन्ते हताञ्शूरान्रणे स्त्रियः ॥११-१७-२२॥
idaṃ kṛcchrataram paśya putrasyāpi vadhān mama। yad imāḥ paryupāsante hatān śūrān raṇe striyaḥ॥11-17-22॥

प्रकीर्णकेशां सुश्रोणीं दुर्योधनभुजाङ्कगाम्। रुक्मवेदीनिभां पश्य कृष्ण लक्ष्मणमातरम् ॥११-१७-२३॥

Indeed, this girl, in earlier times, while the mighty-armed man was alive, found joy resting in his arms—the high-minded woman of the beautiful-armed one.
कथं तु शतधा नेदं हृदयं मम दीर्यते। पश्यन्त्या निहतं पुत्रं पुत्रेण सहितं रणे ॥११-१७-२५॥
kathaṁ tu śatadhā nedaṁ hṛdayaṁ mama dīryate। paśyantyā nihataṁ putraṁ putreṇa sahitaṁ raṇe ॥11-17-25॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; तु (tu) - but; शतधा (śatadhā) - into a hundred pieces; न (na) - not; इदं (idaṁ) - this; हृदयं (hṛdayaṁ) - heart; मम (mama) - my; दीर्यते (dīryate) - is torn; पश्यन्त्या (paśyantyā) - by (me) seeing; निहतं (nihataṁ) - slain; पुत्रं (putraṁ) - son; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - by (my) son; सहितं (sahitaṁ) - together with; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(How but into a hundred pieces not this heart my is torn; by (me) seeing slain son by (my) son together with in battle.)
But how is it that my heart does not break into a hundred pieces, seeing my son slain together with (another) son in battle?
पुत्रं रुधिरसंसिक्तमुपजिघ्रत्यनिन्दिता। दुर्योधनं तु वामोरूः पाणिना परिमार्जति ॥११-१७-२६॥
putraṃ rudhirasaṃsiktam upajighraty aninditā। duryodhanaṃ tu vāmorūḥ pāṇinā parimārjati ॥11-17-26॥

(What indeed does this high-minded woman grieve for, her husband or her son? Thus indeed, being situated, she appears, having also looked at her son.)

(Lotus-like shines the radiance within the lotus. Having wiped the face of her son and of her husband, the ascetic woman.)

यदि चाप्यागमाः सन्ति यदि वा श्रुतयस्तथा। ध्रुवं लोकानवाप्तोऽयं नृपो बाहुबलार्जितान् ॥११-१७-३०॥
yadi cāpyāgamāḥ santi yadi vā śrutayastathā। dhruvaṃ lokānavāpto'yaṃ nṛpo bāhubalārjitān ॥11-17-30॥

(If indeed there are authoritative texts, or likewise the Vedas, certainly this king has not attained the worlds acquired by the strength of arms.)
