Gandhari said.
पश्य माधव पुत्रान्मे शतसङ्ख्याञ्जितक्लमान्। गदया भीमसेनेन भूयिष्ठं निहतान्रणे ॥११-१८-१॥
paśya mādhava putrān me śatasaṅkhyāñ jitaklamān। gadayā bhīmasenena bhūyiṣṭhaṃ nihatān raṇe ॥11-18-1॥
[पश्य (paśya) - see; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; मे (me) - my; शतसङ्ख्यान् (śatasaṅkhyān) - hundred in number; जितक्लमान् (jitaklamān) - who have overcome fatigue; गदया (gadayā) - by the mace; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhīmasena; भूयिष्ठम् (bhūyiṣṭham) - mostly; निहतान् (nihatān) - slain; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]

इदं दुःखतरं मेऽद्य यदिमा मुक्तमूर्धजाः। हतपुत्रा रणे बालाः परिधावन्ति मे स्नुषाः ॥११-१८-२॥
idaṃ duḥkhataraṃ me'dya yad imā muktamūrdhajāḥ | hataputrā raṇe bālāḥ paridhāvanti me snuṣāḥ ||11-18-2||

(This is more painful to me today, that these young women, with loosened hair, whose sons are slain in battle, my daughters-in-law, run about.)
Today, what pains me even more is that my daughters-in-law, these young women with loosened hair, whose sons have been slain in battle, are running about.
प्रासादतलचारिण्यश्चरणैर्भूषणान्वितैः। आपन्ना यत्स्पृशन्तीमा रुधिरार्द्रां वसुन्धराम् ॥११-१८-३॥
prāsādatala-cāriṇyaś caraṇair bhūṣaṇānvitaiḥ। āpannā yat spṛśantīmā rudhirārdraṃ vasundharām॥11-18-3॥
[प्रासादतलचारिण्यः (prāsādatala-cāriṇyaḥ) - moving on the palace floor; चरणैः (caraṇaiḥ) - with feet; भूषणान्वितैः (bhūṣaṇānvitaiḥ) - adorned with ornaments; आपन्नाः (āpannāḥ) - having reached; यत् (yat) - which; स्पृशन्ति (spṛśanti) - touch; इमाम् (imām) - this; रुधिरार्द्रां (rudhirārdraṃ) - moistened with blood; वसुन्धराम् (vasundharām) - earth; ॥११-१८-३॥ (॥11-18-3॥) -;]
(Moving on the palace floor, with feet adorned with ornaments, having reached, which touch this earth moistened with blood.)
They, moving on the palace floor with ornamented feet, have now come to touch this blood-soaked earth.
गृध्रानुत्सारयन्त्यश्च गोमायून्वायसांस्तथा। शोकेनार्ता विघूर्णन्त्यो मत्ता इव चरन्त्युत ॥११-१८-४॥
gṛdhrān utsārayantyaś ca gomāyūn vāyasāṃs tathā| śokenārtā vighūrṇantyo mattā iva caranty uta ||11-18-4||
[गृध्रान् (gṛdhrān) - vultures; उत्सारयन्त्यः (utsārayantyaḥ) - driving away; च (ca) - and; गोमायून् (gomāyūn) - jackals; वायसान् (vāyasān) - crows; तथा (tathā) - likewise; शोकेन (śokena) - by grief; आर्ताः (ārtāḥ) - afflicted; विघूर्णन्त्यः (vighūrṇantyaḥ) - wandering; मत्ताः (mattāḥ) - like mad; इव (iva) - as if; चरन्ति (caranti) - moving; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Driving away vultures and likewise jackals and crows, afflicted by grief, wandering as if mad, indeed they move.)
Afflicted by grief, they drive away vultures, jackals, and crows, wandering about as if mad.
एषान्या त्वनवद्याङ्गी करसंमितमध्यमा। घोरं तद्वैशसं दृष्ट्वा निपतत्यतिदुःखिता ॥११-१८-५॥
eṣānyā tvanavadyāṅgī karasaṃmitamadhyamā। ghoraṃ tadvaiśasaṃ dṛṣṭvā nipatatyatiduḥkhitā ॥11-18-5॥
[एषा (eṣā) - this (feminine); अन्या (anyā) - other (feminine); त्व् (tv) - but; indeed; अनवद्याङ्गी (anavadyāṅgī) - faultless-limbed (feminine); कर (kara) - hand; संमित (saṃmita) - measured; मध्यमा (madhyamā) - middle (feminine); घोरं (ghoraṃ) - terrible; तत् (tat) - that; वैशसं (vaiśasaṃ) - slaughter; destruction; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; निपतति (nipatati) - falls down; अतिदुःखिता (atiduḥkhitā) - excessively distressed (feminine);]
(This other, but faultless-limbed, with hands measured at the middle, having seen that terrible slaughter, falls down excessively distressed.)
But this other woman, faultless in her limbs and with hands reaching to her thighs, seeing that terrible slaughter, falls down overwhelmed with grief.
दृष्ट्वा मे पार्थिवसुतामेतां लक्ष्मणमातरम्। राजपुत्रीं महाबाहो मनो न व्युपशाम्यति ॥११-१८-६॥
dṛṣṭvā me pārthivasutāmetāṃ lakṣmaṇamātaram। rājaputrīṃ mahābāho mano na vyupaśāmyati ॥11-18-6॥

(Having seen this daughter of the king, the mother of Lakṣmaṇa, O mighty-armed, my mind does not subside.)
O mighty-armed one, having seen this princess, the mother of Lakṣmaṇa, my mind does not become calm.
भ्रातॄंश्चान्याः पतींश्चान्याः पुत्रांश्च निहतान्भुवि। दृष्ट्वा परिपतन्त्येताः प्रगृह्य सुभुजा भुजान् ॥११-१८-७॥
bhrātṝṁścānyāḥ patīṁścānyāḥ putrāṁśca nihatānbhuvi| dṛṣṭvā paripatantyetāḥ pragṛhya subhujā bhujān ॥11-18-7॥

(Brothers and other (women's) husbands and other (women's) sons, slain on the earth—having seen (them), these (women) fall down all around, having embraced (them) with beautiful arms, (their) arms.)
Seeing their brothers, husbands, and sons slain on the earth, these women fall down all around, embracing them with their beautiful arms.
मध्यमानां तु नारीणां वृद्धानां चापराजित। आक्रन्दं हतबन्धूनां दारुणे वैशसे शृणु ॥११-१८-८॥
madhyamānāṃ tu nārīṇāṃ vṛddhānāṃ cāparājita। ākrandaṃ hatabandhūnāṃ dāruṇe vaiśase śṛṇu ॥11-18-8॥
[मध्यमानाम् (madhyamānām) - of the middle ones; (i.e., of those of middle age); तु (tu) - but; however; नारीणाम् (nārīṇām) - of women; वृद्धानाम् (vṛddhānām) - of the old; (i.e., of the aged); च (ca) - and; अपराजित (aparājita) - O undefeated one; आक्रन्दम् (ākrandam) - crying; wailing; हतबन्धूनाम् (hatabandhūnām) - of those whose relatives are slain; दारुणे (dāruṇe) - in the dreadful; वैशसे (vaiśase) - massacre; slaughter; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; listen;]
(But, O undefeated one, hear the wailing of the women of middle age and the aged, whose relatives have been slain, in the dreadful massacre.)
But, O undefeated one, listen to the cries of the middle-aged and elderly women whose relatives have been killed in this terrible massacre.
रथनीडानि देहांश्च हतानां गजवाजिनाम्। आश्रिताः श्रममोहार्ताः स्थिताः पश्य महाबल ॥११-१८-९॥
rathanīḍāni dehāṃś ca hatānāṃ gajavājinām। āśritāḥ śramamohārtāḥ sthitāḥ paśya mahābala ॥11-18-9॥
[रथनीडानि (rathanīḍāni) - chariot-nests; (places where chariots are stationed or destroyed); देहान् (dehān) - bodies; (physical forms); च (ca) - and; हतानाम् (hatānām) - of the slain; गजवाजिनाम् (gajavājinām) - of elephants and horses; आश्रिताः (āśritāḥ) - occupied by; (taken refuge in); श्रम (śrama) - fatigue; मोह (moha) - delusion; आर्ताः (ārtāḥ) - afflicted; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - standing; पश्य (paśya) - see; महाबल (mahābala) - O mighty-armed;]
(See, O mighty-armed, the chariot-nests and bodies of the slain elephants and horses, occupied by those afflicted by fatigue and delusion, standing.)
O mighty-armed one, see how those afflicted by fatigue and delusion are standing amidst the chariot-nests and the bodies of slain elephants and horses.
अन्या चापहृतं कायाच्चारुकुण्डलमुन्नसम्। स्वस्य बन्धोः शिरः कृष्ण गृहीत्वा पश्य तिष्ठति ॥११-१८-१०॥
anyā cāpahṛtaṃ kāyāccārukuṇḍalamunnasam| svasya bandhoḥ śiraḥ kṛṣṇa gṛhītvā paśya tiṣṭhati ॥11-18-10॥
[अन्या (anyā) - another (woman); च (ca) - and; अपहृतम् (apahṛtam) - taken away; कायात् (kāyāt) - from the body; चारुकुण्डलम् (cārukuṇḍalam) - beautiful earring; उन्नसम् (unnasam) - raised; स्वस्य (svasya) - her own; बन्धोः (bandhoḥ) - of (her) relative; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; पश्य (paśya) - see; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - stands;]
(Another (woman), and (her) beautiful earring having been taken away from (her) body, with (her) nose raised, having taken the head of her own relative, O Kṛṣṇa, see, stands.)
O Kṛṣṇa, see, another woman, her beautiful earring having been taken from her body, stands with her nose raised, holding the head of her own relative.
पूर्वजातिकृतं पापं मन्ये नाल्पमिवानघ। एताभिरनवद्याभिर्मया चैवाल्पमेधया ॥११-१८-११॥
pūrvajātikṛtaṃ pāpaṃ manye nālpamivānagha। etābhiranavadyābhirmayā caivālpamedhayā ॥11-18-11॥
[पूर्वजातिकृतं (pūrvajātikṛtam) - done in a previous birth; पापं (pāpam) - sin; मन््ये (manye) - I think; न (na) - not; अल्पम् (alpam) - small; इव (iva) - as if; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; एताभिः (etābhiḥ) - by these; अनवद्याभिः (anavadyābhiḥ) - by the blameless ones; मया (mayā) - by me; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अल्पमेधया (alpamedhayā) - with little intelligence;]
(O sinless one, I think the sin done in a previous birth is not small, as if by these blameless ones and by me, indeed with little intelligence.)
O sinless one, I believe that the sin committed in a previous birth is not insignificant; it seems that by these blameless ones and by me, who has little intelligence, this has occurred.
तदिदं धर्मराजेन यातितं नो जनार्दन। न हि नाशोऽस्ति वार्ष्णेय कर्मणोः शुभपापयोः ॥११-१८-१२॥
tad idaṃ dharmarājena yātitaṃ no janārdana। na hi nāśo'sti vārṣṇeya karmaṇoḥ śubhapāpayoḥ ॥11-18-12॥
[तत् (tat) - that; इदं (idaṃ) - this; धर्मराजेन (dharmarājena) - by Dharmarāja; यातितं (yātitaṃ) - has been endured; नः (naḥ) - by us; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janārdana; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; नाशः (nāśaḥ) - destruction; अस्ति (asti) - is; वार्ष्णेय (vārṣṇeya) - O descendant of Vṛṣṇi; कर्मणोः (karmaṇoḥ) - of action (dual); शुभपापयोः (śubhapāpayoḥ) - of good and evil (dual);]
(That this has been endured by Dharmarāja by us, O Janārdana. Indeed, there is no destruction, O Vārṣṇeya, of action, of good and evil.)
O Janārdana, this has been endured by Dharmarāja for us. O Vārṣṇeya, truly, there is no destruction of actions, whether good or evil.
प्रत्यग्रवयसः पश्य दर्शनीयकुचोदराः। कुलेषु जाता ह्रीमत्यः कृष्णपक्षाक्षिमूर्धजाः ॥११-१८-१३॥
pratyagravayasaḥ paśya darśanīyakucodarāḥ। kuleṣu jātā hrīmatyaḥ kṛṣṇapakṣākṣimūrdhajāḥ॥11-18-13॥
[प्रत्यग्रवयसः (pratyagravayasaḥ) - of fresh youth; पश्य (paśya) - see; दर्शनीयकुचोदराः (darśanīyakucodarāḥ) - having beautiful breasts and abdomens; कुलेषु (kuleṣu) - in families; जाता (jātā) - born; ह्रीमत्यः (hrīmatyaḥ) - modest; कृष्णपक्षाक्षिमूर्धजाः (kṛṣṇapakṣākṣimūrdhajāḥ) - having black-winged (dark) eyes and hair;]
(See those of fresh youth, having beautiful breasts and abdomens, born in families, modest, having black-winged (dark) eyes and hair.)
See these young women, with beautiful breasts and abdomens, born in noble families, modest, with dark eyes and hair.
हंसगद्गदभाषिण्यो दुःखशोकप्रमोहिताः। सारस्य इव वाशन्त्यः पतिताः पश्य माधव ॥११-१८-१४॥
haṃsagadgadabhāṣiṇyo duḥkhaśokapramohitāḥ। sārasya iva vāśantyaḥ patitāḥ paśya mādhava ॥11-18-14॥
[हंस (haṃsa) - goose; swan; गद्गद (gadgada) - choked; trembling (with emotion); भाषिण्यः (bhāṣiṇyaḥ) - speaking; uttering; दुःख (duḥkha) - sorrow; pain; शोक (śoka) - grief; प्रमोहिताः (pramohitāḥ) - deluded; bewildered; सारस्य (sārasya) - of the lake; of the pond; इव (iva) - like; as if; वाशन्त्यः (vāśantyaḥ) - crying; calling; पतिताः (patitāḥ) - fallen; dropped; पश्य (paśya) - see; behold; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; O Krishna;]
(The swan-like women, their voices choked with emotion, deluded by sorrow and grief, like the cries of those fallen from the lake, see, O Mādhava.)
O Mādhava, see how the swan-like women, their voices trembling with emotion and bewildered by sorrow and grief, cry out like those fallen from the lake.
फुल्लपद्मप्रकाशानि पुण्डरीकाक्ष योषिताम्। अनवद्यानि वक्त्राणि तपत्यसुखरश्मिवान् ॥११-१८-१५॥
phullapadmaprakāśāni puṇḍarīkākṣa yoṣitām। anavadyāni vaktrāṇi tapatyasukharāśmivān ॥11-18-15॥
[फुल्ल (phulla) - blooming; पद्म (padma) - lotus; प्रकाशानि (prakāśāni) - shining; पुण्डरीकाक्ष (puṇḍarīkākṣa) - O lotus-eyed; योषिताम् (yoṣitām) - of women; अनवद्यानि (anavadyāni) - faultless; वक्त्राणि (vaktrāṇi) - faces; तपत्य (tapatya) - shining; सुख (sukha) - pleasant; रश्मिवान् (raśmivān) - sun;]
(O lotus-eyed one, the faces of women, shining like blooming lotuses, faultless, shine with the pleasant rays of the sun.)

(Other people today see the blockade of Vasudeva by my envious sons, who are intoxicated with the pride of elephants.)

शतचन्द्राणि चर्माणि ध्वजांश्चादित्यसंनिभान्। रौक्माणि चैव वर्माणि निष्कानपि च काञ्चनान् ॥११-१८-१७॥
śatacandrāṇi carmāṇi dhvajāṃścādityasaṃnibhān। raukmāṇi caiva varmāṇi niṣkānapi ca kāñcanān ॥11-18-17॥
[शतचन्द्राणि (śatacandrāṇi) - hundred-mooned; (having) hundreds of moons; (shields) with a hundred moon-like (marks); चर्माणि (carmāṇi) - shields; ध्वजान् (dhvajān) - banners; च (ca) - and; आदित्यसंनिभान् (ādityasaṃnibhān) - sun-like; resembling the sun; रौक्माणि (raukmāṇi) - golden; made of gold; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वर्माणि (varmāṇi) - armours; निष्कान् (niṣkān) - gold coins; necklaces of gold; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; काञ्चनान् (kāñcanān) - golden; of gold;]
(Shields with a hundred moons, banners resembling the sun, golden armours, and also golden necklaces and gold coins.)

शीर्षत्राणानि चैतानि पुत्राणां मे महीतले। पश्य दीप्तानि गोविन्द पावकान्सुहुतानिव ॥११-१८-१८॥
śīrṣatrāṇāni caitāni putrāṇāṃ me mahītale। paśya dīptāni govinda pāvakānsuhutāniva ॥11-18-18॥

एष दुःशासनः शेते शूरेणामित्रघातिना। पीतशोणितसर्वाङ्गो भीमसेनेन पातितः ॥११-१८-१९॥
eṣa duḥśāsanaḥ śete śūreṇāmitraghātinā। pītaśoṇitasarvāṅgo bhīmasenena pātitaḥ ॥11-18-19॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; दुःशासनः (duḥśāsanaḥ) - Duḥśāsana; शेते (śete) - lies; शूरेण (śūreṇa) - by the hero; अमित्रघातिना (amitraghatinā) - by the slayer of enemies; पीतशोणितसर्वाङ्गः (pītaśoṇitasarvāṅgaḥ) - with all limbs smeared with blood; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhīmasena; पातितः (pātitaḥ) - felled;]
(This Duḥśāsana lies, felled by the hero, the slayer of enemies, with all limbs smeared with blood, by Bhīmasena.)
Here lies Duḥśāsana, struck down by the heroic Bhīmasena, the destroyer of enemies, his entire body stained with blood.
गदया वीरघातिन्या पश्य माधव मे सुतम्। द्यूतक्लेशाननुस्मृत्य द्रौपद्या चोदितेन च ॥११-१८-२०॥
gadayā vīraghātinyā paśya mādhava me sutam। dyūtakleśānanusmṛtya draupadyā coditena ca ॥11-18-20॥

निबोधैनं सुदुर्बुद्धिं मातुलं कलहप्रियम्। क्षिप्रमेनं परित्यज्य पुत्र शाम्यस्व पाण्डवैः ॥११-१८-२४॥
nibodhaiṇaṃ sudurbuddhiṃ mātulaṃ kalahapriyam। kṣipramenaṃ parityajya putra śāmyasva pāṇḍavaiḥ ॥11-18-24॥
[निबोध (nibodha) - know; understand; एनं (enaṃ) - this (person); सुदुर्बुद्धिं (sudurbuddhiṃ) - very evil-minded; मातुलं (mātulaṃ) - maternal uncle; कलहप्रियम् (kalahapriyam) - fond of quarrel; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; एनं (enaṃ) - this (person); परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; पुत्र (putra) - son; शाम्यस्व (śāmyasva) - make peace; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Know this person, your maternal uncle, as very evil-minded and fond of quarrel. Quickly abandon him, son, and make peace with the Pāṇḍavas.)
Understand that this maternal uncle is extremely wicked and quarrelsome. My son, quickly abandon him and make peace with the Pāṇḍavas.
न बुध्यसे त्वं दुर्बुद्धे भीमसेनममर्षणम्। वाङ्नाराचैस्तुदंस्तीक्ष्णैरुल्काभिरिव कुञ्जरम् ॥११-१८-२५॥
na budhyase tvaṃ durbuddhe bhīmasenam amarṣaṇam। vāṅ-nārācais tudamsti kṣṇair ulkābhir iva kuñjaram ॥11-18-25॥

(You do not understand, O evil-minded one, Bhīmasena, the impatient, piercing with words and arrows, sharp as meteors, like an elephant.)

तानेष रभसः क्रूरो वाक्षल्यानवधारयन्। उत्ससर्ज विषं तेषु सर्पो गोवृषभेष्विव ॥११-१८-२६॥
tāneṣa rabhasaḥ krūro vākṣalyānavadhārayan। utsasarja viṣaṃ teṣu sarpo govṛṣabheṣviva ॥11-18-26॥
