एष माधव पुत्रो मे विकर्णः प्राज्ञसंमतः। भूमौ विनिहतः शेते भीमेन शतधा कृतः ॥११-१९-१॥
eṣa mādhava putro me vikarṇaḥ prājñasaṃmataḥ। bhūmau vinihataḥ śete bhīmena śatadhā kṛtaḥ ॥11-19-1॥

गजमध्यगतः शेते विकर्णो मधुसूदन। नीलमेघपरिक्षिप्तः शरदीव दिवाकरः ॥११-१९-२॥

अस्य चापग्रहेणैष पाणिः कृतकिणो महान्। कथञ्चिच्छिद्यते गृध्रैरत्तुकामैस्तलत्रवान् ॥११-१९-३॥
asya cāpagraheṇaiṣa pāṇiḥ kṛtakiṇo mahān। kathañcicchidyate gṛdhrairattukāmaistalatravān ॥11-19-3॥

(Of this, by the holding of the bow, this hand, callused, great, somehow is being cut by vultures desiring to eat, having palm-protectors.)
This great, callused hand, hardened by holding the bow, is somehow being cut by vultures eager to eat, even though it has palm-protectors.
अस्य भार्यामिषप्रेप्सून्गृध्रानेतांस्तपस्विनी। वारयत्यनिशं बाला न च शक्नोति माधव ॥११-१९-४॥

युवा वृन्दारकः शूरो विकर्णः पुरुषर्षभ। सुखोचितः सुखार्हश्च शेते पांसुषु माधव ॥११-१९-५॥

O Mādhava, the young prince, heroic Vikarna, who is a bull among men, accustomed to comfort and worthy of happiness, now lies on the dust.
कर्णिनालीकनाराचैर्भिन्नमर्माणमाहवे। अद्यापि न जहात्येनं लक्ष्मीर्भरतसत्तमम् ॥११-१९-६॥
karṇinālīkanārācair bhinnamarmāṇam āhave। adyāpi na jahāty enaṃ lakṣmīr bharatasattamam ॥11-19-6॥
[कर्णि (karṇi) - arrow with a crescent-shaped head; नालीक (nālīka) - reed-arrow; नाराचैः (nārācaiḥ) - with iron arrows; भिन्न (bhinna) - pierced; मर्माणम् (marmāṇam) - vital parts; आहवे (āhave) - in battle; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; न (na) - not; जहाति (jahāti) - abandons; एनम् (enam) - him; लक्ष्मीः (lakṣmīḥ) - fortune; भरतसत्तमम् (bharatasattamam) - the best of the Bharatas;]
(Even today, fortune does not abandon this best of the Bharatas, who in battle had his vital parts pierced by crescent-headed arrows, reed-arrows, and iron arrows.)
Even now, fortune does not leave this foremost of the Bharatas, who was wounded in his vital parts by crescent-headed, reed, and iron arrows in battle.
एष सङ्ग्रामशूरेण प्रतिज्ञां पालयिष्यता। दुर्मुखोऽभिमुखः शेते हतोऽरिगणहा रणे ॥११-१९-७॥
eṣa saṅgrāmaśūreṇa pratijñāṃ pālayiṣyatā। durmukho'bhimukhaḥ śete hato'rigaṇahā raṇe ॥11-19-7॥

(This, by the battle-hero who will protect the vow, Durmukha, facing (him), lies slain, the destroyer of hosts of enemies, in battle.)
Here, Durmukha, the destroyer of enemy hosts, lies slain in battle by the battle-hero who upheld his vow.
तस्यैतद्वदनं कृष्ण श्वापदैरर्धभक्षितम्। विभात्यभ्यधिकं तात सप्तम्यामिव चन्द्रमाः ॥११-१९-८॥
tasyaitadvadanaṃ kṛṣṇa śvāpadairardhabhakṣitam। vibhātyabhyadhikaṃ tāta saptamyāmiva candramāḥ ॥11-19-8॥

(O Kṛṣṇa, this face of him, half eaten by beasts of prey, shines exceedingly, O dear one, like the moon on the seventh (lunar day).)

शूरस्य हि रणे कृष्ण यस्याननमथेदृशम्। स कथं निहतोऽमित्रैः पांसून्ग्रसति मे सुतः ॥११-१९-९॥

(Of the hero indeed in battle, O Kṛṣṇa, whose face was such as this—how does he, slain by enemies, swallow dust, my son?)
O Kṛṣṇa, my son, whose face was so heroic in battle—how is it that, slain by enemies, he now lies swallowing dust?
यस्याहवमुखे सौम्य स्थाता नैवोपपद्यते। स कथं दुर्मुखोऽमित्रैर्हतो विबुधलोकजित् ॥११-१९-१०॥
yasyāhavamukhe saumya sthātā naivopapadyate। sa kathaṃ durmukho'mitrairhato vibudhalokajit ॥11-19-10॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; आहवमुखे (āhavamukhe) - in the face of battle; सौम्य (saumya) - gentle one; स्थाता (sthātā) - one who stands (to face); न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; उपपद्यते (upapadyate) - is found; सः (saḥ) - he; कथम् (katham) - how; दुर्मुखः (durmukhaḥ) - evil-faced; अमित्रैः (amitraiḥ) - by enemies; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; विबुधलोकजित् (vibudhalokajit) - conqueror of the world of the wise (gods);]
(Of whom, in the face of battle, O gentle one, one who stands (to face) is not indeed found; he, how (can) the evil-faced, killed by enemies, conqueror of the world of the wise (gods)?)
O gentle one, in whose presence on the battlefield no one dares to stand, how could such a conqueror of the world of the gods be slain by wicked enemies?
चित्रसेनं हतं भूमौ शयानं मधुसूदन। धार्तराष्ट्रमिमं पश्य प्रतिमानं दनुष्मताम् ॥११-१९-११॥
citrāsenaṃ hataṃ bhūmau śayānaṃ madhusūdana। dhārtarāṣṭram imaṃ paśya pratimānaṃ danuṣmatām ॥11-19-11॥

O Madhusūdana, look at Citrāsena, who has been slain and lies on the ground; behold this son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who was the equal of the bowmen.
तं चित्रमाल्याभरणं युवत्यः शोककर्शिताः। क्रव्यादसङ्घैः सहिता रुदन्त्यः पर्युपासते ॥११-१९-१२॥
taṃ citramālyābharaṇaṃ yuvatyaḥ śokakarśitāḥ। kravyādasaṅghaiḥ sahitā rudantyaḥ paryupāsate ॥11-19-12॥

युवा वृन्दारको नित्यं प्रवरस्त्रीनिषेवितः। विविंशतिरसौ शेते ध्वस्तः पांसुषु माधव ॥११-१९-१४॥

(The young man, the youth, always attended by excellent women, this twenty-year-old lies fallen in the dust, O Mādhava.)

शरसङ्कृत्तवर्माणं वीरं विशसने हतम्। परिवार्यासते गृध्राः परिविंशा विविंशतिम् ॥११-१९-१५॥
śarasaṅkṛttavarmāṇaṃ vīraṃ viśasane hatam। parivāryāsate gṛdhrāḥ pariviṃśā viviṃśatim ॥11-19-15॥

(The hero whose armor was cut by arrows, killed on the ground, is surrounded by vultures, twenty and twenty-two, sitting around.)
The warrior, whose armor was severed by arrows and who was slain on the battlefield, is now surrounded by vultures—twenty and twenty-two of them—sitting around him.
प्रविश्य समरे वीरः पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम्। आविश्य शयने शेते पुनः सत्पुरुषोचितम् ॥११-१९-१६॥
praviśya samare vīraḥ pāṇḍavānāmanīkinīm। āviśya śayane śete punaḥ satpuruṣocitam ॥11-19-16॥

The hero, after entering the Pāṇḍava army in battle, now lies on his bed once more, in a manner appropriate for a noble person.
स्मितोपपन्नं सुनसं सुभ्रु ताराधिपोपमम्। अतीव शुभ्रं वदनं पश्य कृष्ण विविंशतेः ॥११-१९-१७॥
smitopapannaṃ sunasaṃ subhru tārādhipopamam। atīva śubhraṃ vadanaṃ paśya kṛṣṇa viviṃśateḥ ॥11-19-17॥

O Krishna, see the exceedingly bright face, endowed with a smile, a beautiful nose, and beautiful eyebrows, resembling the moon, of the twenty-second person.
यं स्म तं पर्युपासन्ते वसुं वासवयोषितः। क्रीडन्तमिव गन्धर्वं देवकन्याः सहस्रशः ॥११-१९-१८॥
yaṃ sma taṃ paryupāsante vasuṃ vāsavayoṣitaḥ। krīḍantam iva gandharvaṃ devakanyāḥ sahasraśaḥ ॥11-19-18॥

(Whom indeed him surround and attend Vasu Indra's women; playing like Gandharva divine maidens by thousands.)
Thousands of divine maidens, the wives of Indra, surround and attend him, as if he were a Gandharva playing, just as they do to a Vasu.
हन्तारं वीरसेनानां शूरं समितिशोभनम्। निबर्हणममित्राणां दुःसहं विषहेत कः ॥११-१९-१९॥
hantāraṃ vīrasenānāṃ śūraṃ samitiśobhanam। nibarhaṇam-amitrāṇāṃ duḥsahaṃ viṣaheta kaḥ ॥11-19-19॥

(Who could withstand the slayer of the armies of heroes, the heroic one adorned in battle, the destroyer of enemies, difficult to endure?)
Who could possibly withstand the one who slays armies of heroes, is heroic and resplendent in battle, and is the destroyer of enemies, who is difficult to endure?
दुःसहस्यैतदाभाति शरीरं संवृतं शरैः। गिरिरात्मरुहैः फुल्लैः कर्णिकारैरिवावृतः ॥११-१९-२०॥
duḥsahasya etad ābhāti śarīraṃ saṃvṛtaṃ śaraiḥ। giriḥ ātmaruhaiḥ phullaiḥ karṇīkāraiḥ iva āvṛtaḥ॥11-19-20॥
[दुःसहस्य (duḥsahasya) - of the unbearable; एतत् (etad) - this; आभाति (ābhāti) - shines; शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; संवृतम् (saṃvṛtam) - covered; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; गिरिः (giriḥ) - mountain; आत्मरुहैः (ātmaruhaiḥ) - with its own trees; फुल्लैः (phullaiḥ) - with blossomed; कर्णिकारैः (karṇīkāraiḥ) - with laburnum flowers; इव (iva) - like; आवृतः (āvṛtaḥ) - covered;]
(This body of the unbearable (Rāvaṇa) shines, covered with arrows, like a mountain covered with blossomed laburnum trees.)
The body of the formidable Rāvaṇa appears radiant, enveloped in arrows, just as a mountain is covered with blossoming laburnum trees.
शातकौम्भ्या स्रजा भाति कवचेन च भास्वता। अग्निनेव गिरिः श्वेतो गतासुरपि दुःसहः ॥११-१९-२१॥
śātakauṃbhyā srajā bhāti kavacena ca bhāsvatā। agnineva giriḥ śveto gatāsur api duḥsahaḥ ॥11-19-21॥
