पुत्रशोकाभिसन्तप्तः सोमदत्तो जनार्दन। युयुधानं महेष्वासं गर्हयन्निव दृश्यते ॥११-२४-२॥

दिष्ट्या यूपध्वजं वीरं पुत्रं भूरिसहस्रदम्। अनेकक्रतुयज्वानं निहतं नाद्य पश्यसि ॥११-२४-५॥

दिष्ट्या स्नुषाणामाक्रन्दे घोरं विलपितं बहु। न शृणोषि महाराज सारसीनामिवार्णवे ॥११-२४-६॥
diṣṭyā snuṣāṇām ākrande ghoraṃ vilapitaṃ bahu। na śṛṇoṣi mahārāja sārasīnām ivārṇave ॥11-24-6॥

एकवस्त्रानुसंवीताः प्रकीर्णासितमूर्धजाः। स्नुषास्ते परिधावन्ति हतापत्या हतेश्वराः ॥११-२४-७॥

शलं विनिहतं सङ्ख्ये भूरिश्रवसमेव च। स्नुषाश्च विधवाः सर्वा दिष्ट्या नाद्येह पश्यसि ॥११-२४-९॥

You do not see here today, by good fortune, all the widows and daughters-in-law of Śala, Bhūriśravas, and others slain in battle.
दिष्ट्या तत्काञ्चनं छत्रं यूपकेतोर्महात्मनः। विनिकीर्णं रथोपस्थे सौमदत्तेर्न पश्यसि ॥११-२४-१०॥
diṣṭyā tatkāñcanaṃ chatraṃ yūpaketormahātmanaḥ। vinikīrṇaṃ rathopasthe saumadatterna paśyasi ॥11-24-10॥

अमूस्तु भूरिश्रवसो भार्याः सात्यकिना हतम्। परिवार्यानुशोचन्ति भर्तारमसितेक्षणाः ॥११-२४-११॥
amūstu bhūriśravaso bhāryāḥ sātyakinā hatam। parivāryānuśocanti bhartāramasitekṣaṇāḥ ॥11-24-11॥

(But those wives of Bhurishravas, dark-eyed, surrounding (him), are lamenting their husband slain by Satyaki.)

एता विलप्य बहुलं भर्तृशोकेन कर्शिताः। पतन्त्यभिमुखा भूमौ कृपणं बत केशव ॥११-२४-१२॥

(These (women), having lamented much, emaciated by the grief for (their) husband, fall facing towards the ground piteously, alas, O Keśava.)
O Keśava, alas! These women, emaciated by grief for their husbands, after much lamentation, fall piteously to the ground facing forward.
बीभत्सुरतिबीभत्सं कर्मेदमकरोत्कथम्। प्रमत्तस्य यदच्छैत्सीद्बाहुं शूरस्य यज्वनः ॥११-२४-१३॥
bībhatsuratibībhatsaṃ karmedamakarotkatham। pramattasya yadacchaitsīdbāhuṃ śūrasya yajvanaḥ ॥11-24-13॥
[बीभत्सु-रति (bībhatsu-rati) - one who delights in the terrible; बीभत्सं (bībhatsaṃ) - terrible; कर्म (karma) - act; इदम् (idam) - this; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; कथम् (katham) - how; प्रमत्तस्य (pramattasya) - of the careless; यत् (yat) - which; अच्छैः (acchaiḥ) - obtained; असीत् (āsīt) - was; बाहुं (bāhuṃ) - arm; शूरस्य (śūrasya) - of the hero; यज्वनः (yajvanaḥ) - of the sacrificer;]
(One who delights in the terrible did this terrible act; how did the careless obtain the arm which was of the hero, the sacrificer?)
How did the careless person obtain the arm of the heroic sacrificer, after one who delights in the terrible performed this terrible act?
ततः पापतरं कर्म कृतवानपि सात्यकिः। यस्मात्प्रायोपविष्टस्य प्राहार्षीत्संशितात्मनः ॥११-२४-१४॥
tataḥ pāpataraṃ karma kṛtavān api sātyakiḥ। yasmāt prāyopaviṣṭasya prāhārṣīt saṃśitātmanaḥ ॥11-24-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पापतरं (pāpataraṃ) - more sinful; कर्म (karma) - action; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - did; अपि (api) - even; सात्यकिः (sātyakiḥ) - Sātyaki; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; प्रायोपविष्टस्य (prāyopaviṣṭasya) - of one who has sat down to fast unto death; प्राह (prāha) - said; अर्षीत् (ārṣīt) - spoke; संशितात्मनः (saṃśitātmanaḥ) - of the one with resolute mind;]
(Then Sātyaki, even having done a more sinful action, because he spoke to the one with resolute mind who had sat down to fast unto death.)
Then Sātyaki, having committed an even more sinful act, addressed the resolute one who was observing a fast unto death.
एको द्वाभ्यां हतः शेषे त्वमधर्मेण धार्मिकः। इति यूपध्वजस्यैताः स्त्रियः क्रोशन्ति माधव ॥११-२४-१५॥
eko dvābhyāṃ hataḥ śeṣe tvamadharmeṇa dhārmikaḥ। iti yūpadhvajasyaitāḥ striyaḥ krośanti mādhava ॥11-24-15॥
[एकः (ekaḥ) - one; द्वाभ्याम् (dvābhyām) - by two; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; शेषे (śeṣe) - remaining; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अधर्मेण (adharmeṇa) - by unrighteousness; धार्मिकः (dhārmikaḥ) - righteous; इति (iti) - thus; यूपध्वजस्य (yūpadhvajasya) - of Yūpadhvaja; एताः (etāḥ) - these; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; क्रोशन्ति (krośanti) - are crying; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava;]
(One was killed by two, the righteous remains by unrighteousness, you—thus these women of Yūpadhvaja are crying, O Mādhava.)
O Mādhava, these women of Yūpadhvaja are crying, saying: "One was killed by two; the righteous remains by unrighteousness—you."
भार्या यूपध्वजस्यैषा करसंमितमध्यमा। कृत्वोत्सङ्गे भुजं भर्तुः कृपणं पर्यदेवयत् ॥११-२४-१६॥
bhāryā yūpadhvajasya eṣā karasaṃmitamadhyamā। kṛtvotsange bhujaṃ bhartuḥ kṛpaṇaṃ paryadevayat ॥11-24-16॥
[भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; यूपध्वजस्य (yūpadhvajasya) - of Yūpadhvaja (one whose banner is a sacrificial post, i.e., of the king); एषा (eṣā) - this (woman); करसंमितमध्यमा (karasaṃmitamadhyamā) - with a waist measured by her hand (slender-waisted); कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having placed; उत्सङ्गे (utsange) - on the lap; भुजं (bhujaṃ) - arm; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of her husband; कृपणं (kṛpaṇam) - piteously; पर्यदेवयत् (paryadevayat) - lamented all around;]
(The wife of Yūpadhvaja, this slender-waisted woman, having placed the arm of her husband on her lap, lamented piteously all around.)

(This is the hand which removes the belt, presses the full breasts, touches the navel, thighs, and hips, and loosens the girdle.)

(What indeed will you say in assemblies and in stories, O Janardana, about the great deeds of Arjuna, or about yourself, or about him, the one with the crown?)
O Janardana, what will you say in assemblies and stories about Arjuna's great deeds, or about yourself, or about him, the crowned one?
इत्येवं गर्हयित्वैषा तूष्णीमास्ते वराङ्गना। तामेतामनुशोचन्ति सपत्न्यः स्वामिव स्नुषाम् ॥११-२४-२०॥
ityevaṃ garhayitvaiṣā tūṣṇīmāste varāṅganā। tāmetāmanuśocanti sapatnyaḥ svāmiva snuṣām ॥11-24-20॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवं (evaṃ) - in this way; गर्हयित्वा (garhayitvā) - having reproached; एषा (eṣā) - this (woman); तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - in silence; आस्ते (āste) - remains; वराङ्गना (varāṅganā) - the noble lady; ताम् (tām) - her; एताम् (etām) - this one; अनुशोचन्ति (anuśocanti) - lament; सपत्न्यः (sapatnyaḥ) - co-wives; स्वामिव (svāmiva) - like the master; स्नुषाम् (snuṣām) - daughter-in-law;]
(Thus, having reproached in this way, this noble lady remains in silence. Her, this one, the co-wives lament, like the master (laments) the daughter-in-law.)

गान्धारराजः शकुनिर्बलवान्सत्यविक्रमः। निहतः सहदेवेन भागिनेयेन मातुलः ॥११-२४-२१॥

(He who formerly was fanned with two golden rods and two fans, indeed, he, this one, is now fanned by birds with wings while lying down.)
He who was once fanned with golden rods and fans is now, as he lies down, fanned by birds with their wings.
यः स्म रूपाणि कुरुते शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः। तस्य मायाविनो माया दग्धाः पाण्डवतेजसा ॥११-२४-२३॥
yaḥ sma rūpāṇi kurute śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ। tasya māyāvino māyā dagdhāḥ pāṇḍavatejasā ॥11-24-23॥

(Who indeed creates forms by hundreds and thousands, of him, the magician, the illusions were burnt by the brilliance of the Pāṇḍava.)
The one who indeed creates forms by the hundreds and thousands—his illusions, O magician, were burnt up by the brilliance of the Pāṇḍava.
मायया निकृतिप्रज्ञो जितवान्यो युधिष्ठिरम्। सभायां विपुलं राज्यं स पुनर्जीवितं जितः ॥११-२४-२४॥
māyayā nikṛtiprajño jitavānyo yudhiṣṭhiram। sabhāyāṃ vipulaṃ rājyaṃ sa punarjīvitaṃ jitaḥ ॥11-24-24॥
[मायया (māyayā) - by illusion; निकृति (nikṛti) - deceit; प्रज्ञः (prajñaḥ) - the wise one; जितवान् (jitavān) - conquered; यः (yaḥ) - who; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; विपुलम् (vipulam) - vast; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; सः (saḥ) - he; पुनः (punar) - again; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; जितः (jitaḥ) - conquered;]
(By illusion, the wise one of deceit conquered Yudhishthira. In the assembly, the vast kingdom and he, having regained life, was conquered.)
By means of illusion, the cunning wise one conquered Yudhishthira; in the assembly, he who had regained his life and the vast kingdom was conquered again.
शकुन्ताः शकुनिं कृष्ण समन्तात्पर्युपासते। कितवं मम पुत्राणां विनाशायोपशिक्षितम् ॥११-२४-२५॥
śakuntāḥ śakuniṃ kṛṣṇa samantāt paryupāsate। kitavaṃ mama putrāṇāṃ vināśāya upaśikṣitam ॥11-24-25॥
[शकुन्ताः (śakuntāḥ) - birds; शकुनिं (śakuniṃ) - bird (vulture); कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - black; समन्तात् (samantāt) - from all sides; पर्युपासते (paryupāsate) - surround; कितवं (kitavam) - gambler; मम (mama) - my; पुत्राणां (putrāṇām) - of sons; विनाशाय (vināśāya) - for destruction; उपशिक्षितम् (upaśikṣitam) - trained;]
(Birds surround the black vulture from all sides; the gambler, trained for the destruction of my sons.)
Just as birds surround the black vulture from all sides, so too is the gambler, trained for the destruction of my sons.
एतेनैतन्महद्वैरं प्रसक्तं पाण्डवैः सह। वधाय मम पुत्राणामात्मनः सगणस्य च ॥११-२४-२६॥
etenaitan-mahad-vairaṃ prasaktaṃ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha। vadhāya mama putrāṇām-ātmanaḥ sagaṇasya ca ॥11-24-26॥
[एतेन (etena) - by this; एतत् (etat) - this; महत् (mahat) - great; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; प्रसक्तम् (prasaktam) - attached; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas; सह (saha) - together; वधाय (vadhāya) - for the killing; मम (mama) - of my; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - sons; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - myself; सगणस्य (sagaṇasya) - with the retinue; च (ca) - and;]
(By this, this great enmity attached with the Pāṇḍavas together, for the killing of my sons, myself, and my retinue also.)
By this, this great enmity with the Pāṇḍavas has become attached, aiming at the destruction of my sons, myself, and my entire retinue.
यथैव मम पुत्राणां लोकाः शस्त्रजिताः प्रभो। एवमस्यापि दुर्बुद्धेर्लोकाः शस्त्रेण वै जिताः ॥११-२४-२७॥
yathaiva mama putrāṇāṃ lokāḥ śastrajitāḥ prabho। evamasyāpi durbuddherlokāḥ śastreṇa vai jitāḥ ॥11-24-27॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; एव (eva) - indeed; मम (mama) - my; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of sons; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; शस्त्रजिताः (śastrajitāḥ) - conquered by weapons; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; एवम् (evam) - so; अस्य (asya) - of him; अपि (api) - also; दुर्बुद्धेः (durbuddheḥ) - of the evil-minded; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; शस्त्रेण (śastreṇa) - by weapon; वै (vai) - indeed; जिताः (jitāḥ) - conquered;]
(Just as, indeed, O lord, the worlds of my sons were conquered by weapons, so also the worlds of this evil-minded one have indeed been conquered by weapon.)
O lord, just as the worlds of my sons were conquered by weapons, so too have the worlds of this evil-minded one been conquered by weapon.
कथं च नायं तत्रापि पुत्रान्मे भ्रातृभिः सह। विरोधयेदृजुप्रज्ञाननृजुर्मधुसूदन ॥११-२४-२८॥
kathaṁ ca nāyaṁ tatrāpi putrān me bhrātṛbhiḥ saha। virodhayed ṛju-prajñāna-nṛjur madhusūdana ॥11-24-28॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - even; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; मे (me) - my; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together; विरोधयेत् (virodhayet) - would oppose; ऋजु (ṛju) - straight; प्रज्ञान (prajñāna) - wisdom; नृजुः (nṛjuḥ) - upright man; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusudana;]
(How and not this (person) there even my sons with brothers together would oppose, straight wisdom upright man, O Madhusudana.)
O Madhusudana, how could even there, this upright and wise man, together with my brothers, oppose my sons?
