एतावदुक्त्वा देवर्षिर्विरराम स नारदः। युधिष्ठिरस्तु राजर्षिर्दध्यौ शोकपरिप्लुतः ॥१२-६-१॥
etāvad uktvā devarṣir virarāma sa nāradaḥ। yudhiṣṭhiras tu rājarṣir dadhyau śoka-pariplutaḥ ॥12-6-1॥
[एतावत् (etāvat) - thus much; so far; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; देवर्षिः (devarṣiḥ) - the divine sage; विरराम (virarāma) - ceased; stopped; सः (saḥ) - he; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; तु (tu) - but; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - the royal sage; दध्यौ (dadhyau) - pondered; meditated; शोक (śoka) - grief; परिप्लुतः (pariplutaḥ) - overwhelmed; flooded;]
(Thus much having spoken, the divine sage Nārada ceased. But Yudhiṣṭhira, the royal sage, pondered, overwhelmed by grief.)
After saying this, the divine sage Nārada became silent. But Yudhiṣṭhira, the royal sage, was lost in thought, overcome with grief.
तं दीनमनसं वीरमधोवदनमातुरम्। निःश्वसन्तं यथा नागं पर्यश्रुनयनं तथा ॥१२-६-२॥
taṃ dīnam-anasam vīram-adhovadanam-āturam। niḥśvasantaṃ yathā nāgaṃ paryaśru-nayanaṃ tathā ॥12-6-2॥

कुन्ती शोकपरीताङ्गी दुःखोपहतचेतना। अब्रवीन्मधुराभाषा काले वचनमर्थवत् ॥१२-६-३॥
kuntī śokaparītāṅgī duḥkhopahatacetanā। abravīn madhurābhāṣā kāle vacanam arthavat ॥12-6-3॥

Kuntī, overwhelmed by grief and sorrow, spoke meaningful and sweet words at the right moment.
युधिष्ठिर महाबाहो नैनं शोचितुमर्हसि। जहि शोकं महाप्राज्ञ शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥१२-६-४॥
yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho nainaṃ śocitumarhasi। jahi śokaṃ mahāprājña śṛṇu cedaṃ vaco mama ॥12-6-4॥

O mighty-armed Yudhiṣṭhira, do not grieve for him. Give up your sorrow, O wise one, and listen to my words.
यतितः स मया पूर्वं भ्रात्र्यं ज्ञापयितुं तव। भास्करेण च देवेन पित्रा धर्मभृतां वर ॥१२-६-५॥
yatitaḥ sa mayā pūrvaṃ bhrātryaṃ jñāpayituṃ tava। bhāskareṇa ca devena pitrā dharmabhṛtāṃ vara ॥12-6-5॥
[यतितः (yatitaḥ) - having endeavored; स (sa) - he; मया (mayā) - by me; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - before; भ्रात्र्यं (bhrātryam) - to the brother; ज्ञापयितुं (jñāpayitum) - to inform; तव (tava) - to you; भास्करेण (bhāskareṇa) - by Bhaskara (the Sun); च (ca) - and; देवेन (devena) - by the god; पित्रा (pitrā) - by the father; धर्मभृतां (dharmabhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; वर (vara) - the best;]
(Having endeavored, he, by me, before, to the brother, to inform, to you, by Bhaskara (the Sun), and by the god, by the father, of the upholders of dharma, the best.)
Having previously endeavored, I informed your brother for you, by Bhaskara the god, the best among the upholders of dharma, and by the father.
यद्वाच्यं हितकामेन सुहृदा भूतिमिच्छता। तथा दिवाकरेणोक्तः स्वप्नान्ते मम चाग्रतः ॥१२-६-६॥
yadvācyaṃ hitakāmena suhṛdā bhūtimicchatā। tathā divākareṇoktaḥ svapnānte mama cāgrataḥ ॥12-6-6॥
[यत् (yat) - which; वाच्यम् (vācyam) - should be spoken; हितकामेन (hitakāmena) - by one desiring welfare; सुहृदा (suhṛdā) - by a friend; भूतिम् (bhūtim) - prosperity; इच्छता (icchatā) - desiring; तथा (tathā) - thus; दिवाकरेण (divākareṇa) - by the Sun; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; स्वप्नान्ते (svapnānte) - at the end of a dream; मम (mama) - before me; च (ca) - and; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front;]
(Which should be spoken by a friend desiring welfare, desiring prosperity, thus spoken by the Sun at the end of a dream, was before me and in front.)
What a friend who wishes well and seeks prosperity should say—such words were spoken by the Sun at the end of a dream, right before me.
न चैनमशकद्भानुरहं वा स्नेहकारणैः। पुरा प्रत्यनुनेतुं वा नेतुं वाप्येकतां त्वया ॥१२-६-७॥
na ca enam aśakad bhānur ahaṃ vā sneha-kāraṇaiḥ। purā pratyanunetuṃ vā netuṃ vā api ekatāṃ tvayā ॥12-6-7॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; अशकद् (aśakad) - was able; भानुः (bhānuḥ) - the sun; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; वा (vā) - or; स्नेहकारणैः (sneha-kāraṇaiḥ) - by reasons of affection; पुरा (purā) - formerly; प्रत्यनुनेतुं (pratyanunetuṃ) - to dissuade; वा (vā) - or; नेतुं (netuṃ) - to lead; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; एकताम् (ekatām) - to unity; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(And not even the sun, nor I, by reasons of affection, was able formerly either to dissuade him or to lead him, or even to bring him to unity by you.)
Neither the sun nor I, for reasons of affection, were ever able to dissuade him, lead him, or unite him with you in the past.
ततः कालपरीतः स वैरस्योद्धुक्षणे रतः। प्रतीपकारी युष्माकमिति चोपेक्षितो मया ॥१२-६-८॥
tataḥ kālaparītaḥ sa vairasyoddhukṣaṇe rataḥ। pratīpakārī yuṣmākamiti copekṣito mayā ॥12-6-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कालपरीतः (kālaparītaḥ) - overcome by time; सः (saḥ) - he; वैरस्य (vairasya) - of enmity; उद्धुक्षणे (uddhukṣaṇe) - in inciting; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; प्रतीपकारी (pratīpakārī) - acting contrary; युष्माकम् (yuṣmākam) - to you; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; उपेक्षितः (upekṣitaḥ) - neglected; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Then, overcome by time, he, engaged in inciting enmity, acting contrary to you thus, was also neglected by me.)
Then, as he was overcome by time and engaged in stirring enmity, acting against you, I also neglected him.
इत्युक्तो धर्मराजस्तु मात्रा बाष्पाकुलेक्षणः। उवाच वाक्यं धर्मात्मा शोकव्याकुलचेतनः ॥१२-६-९॥
ityukto dharmarājastu mātrā bāṣpākulekṣaṇaḥ। uvāca vākyaṃ dharmātmā śokavyākulacetanaḥ ॥12-6-9॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja; तु (tu) - but; मात्रा (mātrā) - by (his) mother; बाष्पाकुलेक्षणः (bāṣpākulekṣaṇaḥ) - with eyes filled with tears; उवाच (uvāca) - said; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - the righteous one; शोकव्याकुलचेतनः (śokavyākulacetanaḥ) - whose mind was agitated by grief;]
(Thus addressed, Dharmarāja, but by (his) mother, with eyes filled with tears, the righteous one, whose mind was agitated by grief, said words.)
Thus, when addressed by his mother, Dharmarāja, his eyes filled with tears, his mind overwhelmed by grief, the righteous one spoke these words.
भवत्या गूढमन्त्रत्वात्पीडितोऽस्मीत्युवाच ताम्। शशाप च महातेजाः सर्वलोकेषु च स्त्रियः ॥ न गुह्यं धारयिष्यन्तीत्यतिदुःखसमन्वितः ॥१२-६-१०॥
bhavatyā gūḍhamantratvāt pīḍito'smītyuvāca tām। śaśāpa ca mahātejāḥ sarvalokeṣu ca striyaḥ ॥ na guhyaṃ dhārayiṣyantītyatiduḥkhasamanvitaḥ ॥12-6-10॥
[भवत्या (bhavatyā) - by you; गूढमन्त्रत्वात् (gūḍhamantratvāt) - because of secrecy of the counsel; पीडितः (pīḍitaḥ) - afflicted; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ताम् (tām) - to her; शशाप (śaśāpa) - cursed; च (ca) - and; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - the one of great energy; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalokeṣu) - in all worlds; च (ca) - and; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; न (na) - not; गुह्यम् (guhyam) - secret; धारयिष्यन्ति (dhārayiṣyanti) - will keep; इति (iti) - thus; अतिदुःखसमन्वितः (atiduḥkhasamanvitaḥ) - filled with great sorrow;]
(By you, because of secrecy of the counsel, afflicted I am—thus said to her. Cursed also the one of great energy: in all worlds, and women, not secret will keep—thus, filled with great sorrow.)
He said to her, "I am afflicted by you because of the secrecy of the counsel." The one of great energy, filled with great sorrow, cursed: "In all worlds, women will not keep secrets."
स राजा पुत्रपौत्राणां सम्बन्धिसुहृदां तथा। स्मरन्नुद्विग्नहृदयो बभूवास्वस्थचेतनः ॥१२-६-११॥
sa rājā putrapautrāṇāṃ sambandhisuḥṛdāṃ tathā। smarannudvignahṛdayo babhūvāsvasthacetanaḥ ॥12-6-11॥
[स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; पुत्रपौत्राणां (putrapautrāṇām) - of sons and grandsons; सम्बन्धि (sambandhi) - of relatives; सुहृदां (suḥṛdām) - of friends; तथा (tathā) - also; स्मरन् (smaran) - remembering; उद्विग्नहृदयः (udvignahṛdayaḥ) - with agitated heart; बभूव (babhūva) - became; अस्वस्थचेतनः (asvasthacetanaḥ) - with disturbed mind;]
(He, the king, remembering sons, grandsons, relatives, and friends also, with an agitated heart, became with disturbed mind.)
The king, recalling his sons, grandsons, relatives, and friends, became anxious and disturbed in mind.
ततः शोकपरीतात्मा सधूम इव पावकः। निर्वेदमकरोद्धीमान्राजा सन्तापपीडितः ॥१२-६-१२॥
tataḥ śokaparītātmā sadhūma iva pāvakaḥ। nirvedamakaroddhīmānrājā santāpapīḍitaḥ ॥12-6-12॥

(Then, the king, the wise one, with a mind overcome by grief, afflicted by distress, like fire with smoke, made dispassion.)
Then the wise king, his mind overwhelmed by grief and afflicted by distress, became dispassionate, like fire enveloped in smoke.
