अव्याहरति कौन्तेये धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे। भ्रातॄणां ब्रुवतां तांस्तान्विविधान्वेदनिश्चयान् ॥१२-१४-१॥
avyāharati kaunteye dharmarāje yudhiṣṭhire। bhrātṝṇāṃ bruvatāṃ tāṃstān vividhān vedaniścayān ॥12-14-1॥

महाभिजनसम्पन्ना श्रीमत्यायतलोचना। अभ्यभाषत राजेन्द्रं द्रौपदी योषितां वरा ॥१२-१४-२॥

अभिमानवती नित्यं विशेषेण युधिष्ठिरे। लालिता सततं राज्ञा धर्मज्ञा धर्मदर्शिनी ॥१२-१४-४॥

āmantrya vipulaśroṇī sāmnā paramavalgunā। bhartāram abhisamprekṣya tato vacanam abravīt ॥12-14-5॥

O Pārtha, these brothers of yours are standing, drying up and panting like small birds, and you do not even greet them.
नन्दयैतान्महाराज मत्तानिव महाद्विपान्। उपपन्नेन वाक्येन सततं दुःखभागिनः ॥१२-१४-७॥
nandayaitān mahārāja mattān iva mahādvipān। upapannena vākyena satataṃ duḥkhabhāginaḥ ॥12-14-7॥

(O great king, cause these, who are always partakers of sorrow, to rejoice with appropriate speech, like (one would) great elephants who are intoxicated.)

कथं द्वैतवने राजन्पूर्वमुक्त्वा तथा वचः। भ्रातॄनेतान्स्म सहिताञ्शीतवातातपार्दितान् ॥१२-१४-८॥
kathaṁ dvaitavane rājan pūrvam uktvā tathā vacaḥ। bhrātṝn etān sma sahitān śīta-vāta-ātapa-ārditān ॥12-14-8॥

वयं दुर्योधनं हत्वा मृधे भोक्ष्याम मेदिनीम्। सम्पूर्णां सर्वकामानामाहवे विजयैषिणः ॥१२-१४-९॥
vayaṃ duryodhanaṃ hatvā mṛdhe bhokṣyāma medinīm। sampūrṇāṃ sarvakāmānāmāhave vijayaiṣiṇaḥ ॥12-14-9॥

(We, having slain Duryodhana in battle, shall enjoy the earth, entire and full of all desires, in battle, desiring victory.)
We, desiring victory, say: "Having slain Duryodhana in battle, we shall enjoy the entire earth, full of every pleasure."
विरथांश्च रथान्कृत्वा निहत्य च महागजान्। संस्तीर्य च रथैर्भूमिं ससादिभिररिंदमाः ॥१२-१४-१०॥
virathāṃś ca rathān kṛtvā nihatya ca mahā-gajān। saṃstīrya ca rathaiḥ bhūmiṃ sa-sādibhiḥ ariṃ-damāḥ ॥12-14-10॥
[विरथान् (virathān) - deprived of chariots; च (ca) - and; रथान् (rathān) - chariots; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; च (ca) - and; महागजान् (mahā-gajān) - great elephants; संस्तीर्य (saṃstīrya) - having covered; च (ca) - and; रथैः (rathaiḥ) - with chariots; भूमिम् (bhūmim) - the ground; ससादिभिः (sa-sādibhiḥ) - with their riders; अरिंदमाः (ariṃ-damāḥ) - subduers of foes;]
(Having made the chariots deprived of their riders and having slain the great elephants, and having covered the ground with chariots along with their riders, the subduers of foes (did thus).)
The subduers of foes, having made the chariots riderless and slain the great elephants, covered the ground with chariots and their riders.
यजतां विविधैर्यज्ञैः समृद्धैराप्तदक्षिणैः। वनवासकृतं दुःखं भविष्यति सुखाय नः ॥१२-१४-११॥
yajatāṃ vividhairyajñaiḥ samṛddhairāptadakṣiṇaiḥ। vanavāsakṛtaṃ duḥkhaṃ bhaviṣyati sukhāya naḥ ॥12-14-11॥
[यजतां (yajatām) - of those who perform sacrifices; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - with various; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - sacrifices; समृद्धैः (samṛddhaiḥ) - abundant; आप्तदक्षिणैः (āptadakṣiṇaiḥ) - with obtained gifts; वनवासकृतं (vanavāsakṛtaṃ) - caused by forest dwelling; दुःखं (duḥkhaṃ) - suffering; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; सुखाय (sukhāya) - for happiness; नः (naḥ) - for us;]
(The suffering caused by forest dwelling will become for our happiness, for us, like the abundant sacrifices performed with various sacrifices and obtained gifts.)
The suffering we endure from living in the forest will, for us, turn into happiness, just as the abundant sacrifices performed with various offerings and gifts bring blessings.
इत्येतानेवमुक्त्वा त्वं स्वयं धर्मभृतां वर। कथमद्य पुनर्वीर विनिहंसि मनांस्युत ॥१२-१४-१२॥
ity etān eva muktvā tvaṃ svayaṃ dharma-bhṛtāṃ vara| katham adya punar vīra vinihaṃsi manāṃsy uta ॥12-14-12॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतान् (etān) - these; एवम् (evam) - in this way; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; स्वयम् (svayam) - yourself; धर्मभृताम् (dharma-bhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; वर (vara) - best; कथम् (katham) - how; अद्य (adya) - today; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; वीर (vīra) - hero; विनिहंसि (vinihaṃsi) - do you destroy; मनांसि (manāṃsi) - minds; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Thus, having spoken these in this way, you yourself, best of the upholders of dharma, how today again, O hero, do you destroy minds indeed?)

न क्लीबो वसुधां भुङ्क्ते न क्लीबो धनमश्नुते। न क्लीबस्य गृहे पुत्रा मत्स्याः पङ्क इवासते ॥१२-१४-१३॥
na klībo vasudhāṃ bhuṅkte na klībo dhanam aśnute। na klībasya gṛhe putrā matsyāḥ paṅka ivāsate ॥12-14-13॥
[न (na) - not; क्लीबः (klībaḥ) - an unmanly person; वसुधाम् (vasudhām) - the earth; भुङ्क्ते (bhuṅkte) - enjoys; न (na) - not; क्लीबः (klībaḥ) - an unmanly person; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; अश्नुते (aśnute) - obtains; न (na) - not; क्लीबस्य (klībasya) - of an unmanly person; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; मत्स्याः (matsyāḥ) - fishes; पङ्क (paṅka) - mud; इव (iva) - like; आसते (āsate) - remain;]
(An unmanly person does not enjoy the earth, an unmanly person does not obtain wealth. In the house of an unmanly person, sons remain like fishes in mud.)
A weak-willed man neither enjoys the earth nor acquires wealth. In the house of such a man, sons remain like fish in mud.
नादण्डः क्षत्रियो भाति नादण्डो भूतिमश्नुते। नादण्डस्य प्रजा राज्ञः सुखमेधन्ति भारत ॥१२-१४-१४॥
nādaṇḍaḥ kṣatriyo bhāti nādaṇḍo bhūtimaśnute। nādaṇḍasya prajā rājñaḥ sukhamedhanti bhārata ॥12-14-14॥
[न (na) - not; अदण्डः (adaṇḍaḥ) - without punishment; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - the kṣatriya; (warrior/king) भाति (bhāti) - shines; न (na) - not; अदण्डः (adaṇḍaḥ) - without punishment; भूतिम् (bhūtim) - prosperity; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains; न (na) - not; अदण्डस्य (adaṇḍasya) - of one without punishment; प्रजा (prajā) - subjects; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; एधन्ति (edhanti) - prosper; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(The kṣatriya without punishment does not shine, the one without punishment does not attain prosperity; the subjects of a king without punishment do not prosper in happiness, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, a kṣatriya who does not wield punishment does not shine, nor does he attain prosperity; the subjects of a king who does not enforce punishment do not flourish in happiness.
मित्रता सर्वभूतेषु दानमध्ययनं तपः। ब्राह्मणस्यैष धर्मः स्यान्न राज्ञो राजसत्तम ॥१२-१४-१५॥
mitratā sarvabhūteṣu dānamadhyayanaṃ tapaḥ। brāhmaṇasyaiṣa dharmaḥ syānna rājño rājasattama ॥12-14-15॥
[मित्रता (mitratā) - friendship; सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūteṣu) - among all beings; दान (dāna) - giving; अध्ययनं (adhyayanaṃ) - study; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of a Brāhmaṇa; एष (eṣa) - this; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; न (na) - not; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of a king; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best of kings;]
(Friendship among all beings, giving, study, austerity—this should be the duty of a Brāhmaṇa, not of a king, O best of kings.)

असतां प्रतिषेधश्च सतां च परिपालनम्। एष राज्ञां परो धर्मः समरे चापलायनम् ॥१२-१४-१६॥

[असताम् (asatām) - of the unrighteous; प्रतिषेधः (pratiṣedhaḥ) - prevention; च (ca) - and; सताम् (satām) - of the righteous; च (ca) - and; परिपालनम् (paripālanam) - protection; एष (eṣa) - this; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of kings; परः (paraḥ) - supreme; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; समरे (samare) - in battle; च (ca) - and; अपलायनम् (apalāyanam) - not fleeing;]
(Prevention of the unrighteous and protection of the righteous; this is the supreme duty of kings, and in battle, not fleeing.)
The highest duty of kings is to prevent the unrighteous and protect the righteous; and in battle, not to flee.
यस्मिन्क्षमा च क्रोधश्च दानादाने भयाभये। निग्रहानुग्रहौ चोभौ स वै धर्मविदुच्यते ॥१२-१४-१७॥
yasmin kṣamā ca krodhaś ca dānādāne bhayābhaye | nigrahānugrahau ca ubhau sa vai dharmavid ucyate ॥12-14-17॥
[यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in whom; क्षमा (kṣamā) - forbearance; च (ca) - and; क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; च (ca) - and; दान (dāna) - giving; अदाने (adāne) - not-giving; भय (bhaya) - fear; अभये (abhaye) - fearlessness; निग्रह (nigraha) - restraint; अनुग्रहौ (anugrahau) - and favor; च (ca) - and; उभौ (ubhau) - both; सः (saḥ) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; धर्मविद् (dharmavid) - knower of dharma; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(In whom forbearance and anger, giving and not-giving, fear and fearlessness, restraint and favor, both, exist—he indeed is called a knower of dharma.)

(Not by learning, not by giving, not by conciliation, nor by sacrifice; by you, this earth was obtained, not by bribery, thus even indeed.)
This earth was not gained by you through learning, charity, conciliation, or sacrifice; nor by bribery, but even so, you have obtained it.
यत्तद्बलममित्राणां तथा वीरसमुद्यतम्। हस्त्यश्वरथसम्पन्नं त्रिभिरङ्गैर्महत्तरम् ॥१२-१४-१९॥
yattadbalam amitrāṇāṃ tathā vīrasamudyatam। hastyaśvarathasampannaṃ tribhiraṅgair mahattaram ॥12-14-19॥
[यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; बलम् (balam) - strength; अमित्राणाम् (amitrāṇām) - of the enemies; तथा (tathā) - also; वीर (vīra) - heroic; समुद्यतम् (samudyatam) - raised; हस्ति (hasti) - elephants; अश्व (aśva) - horses; रथ (ratha) - chariots; सम्पन्नम् (sampannam) - endowed with; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - with three; अङ्गैः (aṅgaiḥ) - divisions; महत्तरम् (mahattaram) - greater;]

(Protected by Droṇa and Karṇa, by Aśvatthāman and by Kṛpa, that (which was) slain by you, O hero, therefore enjoy the earth.)

जम्बूद्वीपो महाराज नानाजनपदायुतः। त्वया पुरुषशार्दूल दण्डेन मृदितः प्रभो ॥१२-१४-२१॥
jambūdvīpo mahārāja nānājanapadāyutaḥ। tvayā puruṣaśārdūla daṇḍena mṛditaḥ prabho ॥12-14-21॥
[जम्बूद्वीपः (jambūdvīpaḥ) - the Jambū continent; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; नाना-जनपद-आयुतः (nānā-janapada-āyutaḥ) - endowed with many regions; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पुरुष-शार्दूल (puruṣa-śārdūla) - tiger among men; दण्डेन (daṇḍena) - by the rod (of punishment); मृदितः (mṛditaḥ) - subdued; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]

जम्बूद्वीपेन सदृशः क्रौञ्चद्वीपो नराधिप। अपरेण महामेरोर्दण्डेन मृदितस्त्वया ॥१२-१४-२२॥

(If indeed your brothers, O ruler of people, were not insane, having bound you together with atheists, they might rule the earth.)
If your brothers were sane, O ruler, they would have bound you with the atheists and ruled the earth.
कुरुते मूढमेवं हि यः श्रेयो नाधिगच्छति। धूपैरञ्जनयोगैश्च नस्यकर्मभिरेव च ॥ भेषजैः स चिकित्स्यः स्याद्य उन्मार्गेण गच्छति ॥१२-१४-३४॥

(He who, being deluded, acts thus indeed, does not attain the better; by fumigations, collyrium-applications, and nasal therapies only, and by medicines, he should be treated, who goes by the wrong path.)
One who acts in this way out of delusion does not attain the good; such a person, who proceeds on the wrong path, should be treated with fumigations, ointments, nasal therapies, and medicines.
साहं सर्वाधमा लोके स्त्रीणां भरतसत्तम। तथा विनिकृतामित्रैर्याहमिच्छामि जीवितुम् ॥१२-१४-३५॥
sāhaṃ sarvā-dhamā loke strīṇāṃ bharata-sattama। tathā vinikṛtā-mitrair yāham icchāmi jīvitum ॥12-14-35॥

(She, I, most degraded, in the world, of women, O best of the Bharatas, thus, by deceiving friends, who, I, wish, to live.)
O best of the Bharatas, I, who am the most degraded among women in the world, thus, having been deceived by friends, wish to live.
एतेषां यतमानानामुत्पद्यन्ते तु सम्पदः। त्वं तु सर्वां महीं लब्ध्वा कुरुषे स्वयमापदम् ॥१२-१४-३६॥
eteṣāṃ yatamānānām utpadyante tu sampadaḥ। tvaṃ tu sarvāṃ mahīṃ labdhvā kuruṣe svayam āpadam ॥12-14-36॥
[एतेषां (eteṣām) - of these; यतमानानाम् (yatamānānām) - of those striving; उत्पद्यन्ते (utpadyante) - arise; तु (tu) - but; सम्पदः (sampadaḥ) - prosperities; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तु (tu) - but; सर्वाम् (sarvām) - all; महीम् (mahīm) - the earth; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; कुरुषे (kuruṣe) - you make; स्वयम् (svayam) - yourself; आपदम् (āpadam) - misfortune;]
(Of these striving ones, prosperities indeed arise; but you, having obtained the whole earth, bring misfortune upon yourself.)
While prosperities arise for those who strive, you, having gained the entire earth, bring misfortune upon yourself.
यथास्तां संमतौ राज्ञां पृथिव्यां राजसत्तमौ। मान्धाता चाम्बरीषश्च तथा राजन्विराजसे ॥१२-१४-३७॥
yathāstāṃ saṃmatau rājñāṃ pṛthivyāṃ rājasattamau। māndhātā cāmbarīṣaśca tathā rājanvirājase ॥12-14-37॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; अस्तां (astāṃ) - let them be; संमतौ (saṃmatau) - approved; राज्ञां (rājñām) - of kings; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyām) - on earth; राजसत्तमौ (rājasattamau) - the best among kings; मान्धाता (māndhātā) - Māndhātā; च (ca) - and; अम्बरीषः (ambarīṣaḥ) - Ambarīṣa; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - so; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विराजसे (virājase) - you shine;]
(Just as Māndhātā and Ambarīṣa, the best among kings approved by kings on earth, so you shine, O king.)
