Bhīṣma said:
एषा प्रथमतो वृत्तिर्द्वितीयां शृणु भारत। यः कश्चिज्जनयेदर्थं राज्ञा रक्ष्यः स मानवः ॥१२-८३-१॥
eṣā prathamato vṛttir dvitīyāṃ śṛṇu bhārata। yaḥ kaścid janayed arthaṃ rājñā rakṣyaḥ sa mānavaḥ ॥12-83-1॥
[एषा (eṣā) - this; (feminine singular nominative) प्रथमतः (prathamataḥ) - firstly; (ablative singular) वृत्तिः (vṛttiḥ) - conduct; (feminine singular nominative) द्वितीयां (dvitīyām) - second; (feminine singular accusative) शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; (imperative singular) भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; (vocative singular) यः (yaḥ) - who; (masculine singular nominative relative pronoun) कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; (indefinite pronoun) जनयेत् (janayet) - would produce; (causative, optative, 3rd person singular) अर्थम् (artham) - wealth; (masculine singular accusative) राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; (instrumental singular) रक्ष्यः (rakṣyaḥ) - to be protected; (masculine singular nominative passive participle) सः (saḥ) - he; (masculine singular nominative) मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man; (masculine singular nominative);]
(This firstly conduct, the second hear, O Bhārata. Who anyone would produce wealth, by the king to be protected he man.)
This is the first conduct; now hear the second, O Bhārata. Any man who produces wealth must be protected by the king.
ह्रियमाणममात्येन भृतो वा यदि वाभृतः। यो राजकोशं नश्यन्तमाचक्षीत युधिष्ठिर ॥१२-८३-२॥
hriyamāṇam amātyena bhṛto vā yadi vābhṛtaḥ। yo rājakośaṃ naśyantam ācakṣīta yudhiṣṭhira ॥12-83-2॥
[ह्रियमाणम् (hriyamāṇam) - being stolen; अमात्येन (amātyena) - by the minister; भृतः (bhṛtaḥ) - hired; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; अभृतः (abhṛtaḥ) - not hired; यः (yaḥ) - who; राजकोशम् (rājakośam) - royal treasury; नश्यन्तम् (naśyantam) - perishing; आचक्षीत (ācakṣīta) - should inform; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(If the royal treasury is being stolen by the minister, whether hired or not hired, whoever should inform Yudhiṣṭhira of the perishing royal treasury.)
If the royal treasury is being stolen by the minister, whether he is hired or not, whoever informs Yudhiṣṭhira about the loss of the royal treasury.
श्रोतव्यं तस्य च रहो रक्ष्यश्चामात्यतो भवेत्। अमात्या ह्युपहन्तारं भूयिष्ठं घ्नन्ति भारत ॥१२-८३-३॥
śrotavyaṃ tasya ca raho rakṣyaścāmātyato bhavet। amātyā hyupahantāraṃ bhūyiṣṭhaṃ ghnanti bhārata ॥12-83-3॥
[श्रोतव्यं (śrotavyam) - to be heard; (that which is) to be listened; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; च (ca) - and; रहः (rahaḥ) - secret; privacy; रक्ष्यः (rakṣyaḥ) - to be protected; च (ca) - and; अमात्यतः (amātyataḥ) - from the minister; from the counselor; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; must be; अमात्याः (amātyāḥ) - ministers; counselors; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; उपहन्तारम् (upahantāram) - one who destroys; slayer; भूयिष्ठम् (bhūyiṣṭham) - mostly; for the most part; घ्नन्ति (ghnanti) - kill; destroy; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; descendant of Bharata;]
(That which is to be heard, and his secret, should be protected from the minister; for ministers, O Bhārata, mostly destroy the one who is to be slain.)
One should keep what is to be heard and one's secrets protected from ministers, for, O Bhārata, it is mostly the ministers who destroy the one they intend to harm.
राजकोशस्य गोप्तारं राजकोशविलोपकाः। समेत्य सर्वे बाधन्ते स विनश्यत्यरक्षितः ॥१२-८३-४॥
rājakośasya goptāraṃ rājakośavilopakāḥ। sametya sarve bādhante sa vinaśyatyarakṣitaḥ ॥12-83-4॥
[राजकोशस्य (rājakośasya) - of the royal treasury; गोप्तारं (goptāram) - the protector; राजकोशविलोपकाः (rājakośavilopakāḥ) - destroyers of the royal treasury; समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; सर्वे (sarve) - all; बाधन्ते (bādhante) - afflict; स (sa) - he; विनश्यति (vinaśyati) - perishes; अरक्षितः (arakṣitaḥ) - unprotected;]
(Of the royal treasury the protector, the destroyers of the royal treasury, having assembled, all afflict; he perishes unprotected.)
The protector of the royal treasury, when unprotected, is afflicted by all the destroyers of the treasury who assemble together, and he perishes.
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। मुनिः कालकवृक्षीयः कौसल्यं यदुवाच ह ॥१२-८३-५॥
atrāpy udāharantīm am itihāsaṃ purātanam। muniḥ kālakavṛkṣīyaḥ kausalyaṃ yad uvāca ha ॥12-83-5॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; अपि (api) - also; उदाहरन्तीम् (udāharantīm) - reciting; अम् (am) - this; इतिहासं (itihāsaṃ) - history; पुरातनम् (purātanam) - ancient; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; कालकवृक्षीयः (kālakavṛkṣīyaḥ) - descendant of Kālakavṛkṣa; कौसल्यं (kausalyaṃ) - to Kausalya; यत् (yat) - which; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Here also, reciting this ancient history, the sage, descendant of Kālakavṛkṣa, indeed spoke to Kausalya, which.)
Here too, the sage descended from Kālakavṛkṣa recited this ancient story to Kausalya.
कोसलानामाधिपत्यं सम्प्राप्ते क्षेमदर्शिनि। मुनिः कालकवृक्षीय आजगामेति नः श्रुतम् ॥१२-८३-६॥
kosalānām ādhipatyaṃ samprāpte kṣemadarśini। muniḥ kālakavṛkṣīya ājagāmeti naḥ śrutam ॥12-83-6॥
[कोसलानाम् (kosalānām) - of the Kosalas; आधिपत्यं (ādhipatyaṃ) - sovereignty; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having been attained; क्षेमदर्शिनि (kṣemadarśini) - by Kṣemadarśin; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; कालकवृक्षीय (kālakavṛkṣīya) - of the Kālakavṛkṣīya lineage; आजगाम (ājagāma) - arrived; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - to us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - has been heard;]
(Of the Kosalas sovereignty having been attained by Kṣemadarśin, the sage of the Kālakavṛkṣīya lineage arrived—thus to us has been heard.)
We have heard that when Kṣemadarśin attained the sovereignty of the Kosalas, the sage of the Kālakavṛkṣīya lineage arrived.
स काकं पञ्जरे बद्ध्वा विषयं क्षेमदर्शिनः। पूर्वं पर्यचरद्युक्तः प्रवृत्त्यर्थी पुनः पुनः ॥१२-८३-७॥
sa kākaṃ pañjare baddhvā viṣayaṃ kṣemadarśinaḥ। pūrvaṃ paryacaradyuktaḥ pravṛttyarthī punaḥ punaḥ ॥12-83-7॥
[स (sa) - he; काकं (kākaṃ) - crow; पञ्जरे (pañjare) - in the cage; बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - having bound; विषयं (viṣayam) - object; क्षेमदर्शिनः (kṣemadarśinaḥ) - of the one who sees safety; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - before; पर्यचरत् (paryacarat) - he moved around; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; प्रवृत्त्यर्थी (pravṛttyarthī) - seeking activity; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(He, having bound the crow in the cage, moved around the object of the one who sees safety, previously engaged, seeking activity, again and again.)
He previously tied the crow in the cage and, seeking activity, repeatedly moved around the object of the one who sought safety.
अधीये वायसीं विद्यां शंसन्ति मम वायसाः। अनागतमतीतं च यच्च सम्प्रति वर्तते ॥१२-८३-८॥
adhīye vāyasīṃ vidyāṃ śaṃsanti mama vāyasāḥ। anāgatamatītaṃ ca yacca samprati vartate ॥12-83-8॥
[अधीये (adhīye) - I study; (from root धा, to place, with prefix अ, and ending ए for first person singular) वायसीं (vāyasīṃ) - of the crow; (feminine, related to crow, vāyasa) विद्यां (vidyāṃ) - knowledge; शंसन्ति (śaṃsanti) - they declare; (from root शंस्, to declare, third person plural) मम (mama) - my; वायसाः (vāyasāḥ) - crows; अनागतम् (anāgatam) - not yet come; (future) अतीतं (atītaṃ) - past; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; सम्प्रति (samprati) - at present; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; (from root वृत्, to exist, third person singular);]
(I study the knowledge of the crow; my crows declare (it): the not-yet-come, the past, and that which exists at present.)
I study the knowledge of the crows; my crows declare what is yet to come, what is past, and what exists at present.
इति राष्ट्रे परिपतन्बहुशः पुरुषैः सह। सर्वेषां राजयुक्तानां दुष्कृतं परिपृष्टवान् ॥१२-८३-९॥
iti rāṣṭre paripatann bahuśaḥ puruṣaiḥ saha। sarveṣāṃ rājayuktānāṃ duṣkṛtaṃ paripṛṣṭavān ॥12-83-9॥
[इति (iti) - thus; राष्ट्रे (rāṣṭre) - in the kingdom; परिपतन् (paripatann) - going around; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; पुरुषैः (puruṣaiḥ) - with men; सह (saha) - together; सर्वेषां (sarveṣāṃ) - of all; राजयुक्तानां (rājayuktānāṃ) - of the royal officers; दुष्कृतं (duṣkṛtam) - misdeed; परिपृष्टवान् (paripṛṣṭavān) - he inquired;]
(Thus, going around in the kingdom many times together with men, he inquired about the misdeed of all the royal officers.)
Thus, he went around the kingdom repeatedly with men and inquired into the misdeeds of all the royal officers.
स बुद्ध्वा तस्य राष्ट्रस्य व्यवसायं हि सर्वशः। राजयुक्तापचारांश्च सर्वान्बुद्ध्वा ततस्ततः ॥१२-८३-१०॥
sa buddʰvā tasya rāṣṭrasya vyavāsāyaṃ hi sarvaśaḥ। rājayuktāpacārāṃś ca sarvān buddʰvā tataḥ tataḥ ॥12-83-10॥
[स (sa) - he; बुद्ध्वा (buddhvā) - having understood; तस्य (tasya) - of him; राष्ट्रस्य (rāṣṭrasya) - of the kingdom; व्यवसायं (vyavasāyaṃ) - activity; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way; राजयुक्तापचारान् (rājayuktāpacārān) - misdeeds of royal officers; च (ca) - and; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; बुद्ध्वा (buddhvā) - having understood; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; ततः (tataḥ) - from there;]
(He, having understood the activity of that kingdom indeed in every way, and having understood all the misdeeds of the royal officers from there and there.)
He, having thoroughly understood the affairs of that kingdom and all the misdeeds of the royal officers in every respect, acted accordingly.
तमेव काकमादाय राजानं द्रष्टुमागमत्। सर्वज्ञोऽस्मीति वचनं ब्रुवाणः संशितव्रतः ॥१२-८३-११॥
tameva kākam ādāya rājānaṃ draṣṭum āgamat। sarvajño'smīti vacanaṃ bruvāṇaḥ saṃśitavrataḥ ॥12-83-11॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एव (eva) - only; काकम् (kākam) - the crow; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; आगमत् (āgamat) - came; सर्वज्ञः (sarvajñaḥ) - omniscient; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; वचनम् (vacanam) - statement; ब्रुवाणः (bruvāṇaḥ) - uttering; संशितव्रतः (saṃśitavrataḥ) - of firm vow;]
(Having taken only him, the crow, he came to see the king. Uttering the statement 'I am omniscient', (he was) of firm vow.)
He took the crow and went to see the king. Proclaiming, 'I am omniscient,' he was steadfast in his vow.
स स्म कौसल्यमागम्य राजामात्यमलङ्कृतम्। प्राह काकस्य वचनादमुत्रेदं त्वया कृतम् ॥१२-८३-१२॥
sa sma kausalyam āgamya rājāmātyam alaṅkṛtam। prāha kākasya vacanād amutredaṃ tvayā kṛtam ॥12-83-12॥
[स (sa) - he; स्म (sma) - indeed; कौसल्यम् (kausalyam) - to Kausalya; आगम्य (āgamya) - having approached; राजामात्यम् (rājāmātyam) - king and minister; अलङ्कृतम् (alaṅkṛtam) - adorned; प्राह (prāha) - said; काकस्य (kākasya) - of the crow; वचनात् (vacanāt) - by the word; अमुत्र (amutra) - there; इदं (idaṃ) - this; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done;]
(He indeed, having approached Kausalya, the king and minister adorned, said: 'By the word of the crow, this was done by you there.')
He then approached Kausalya, who was with the king and minister, and said: 'According to the crow's words, this was done by you there.'
असौ चासौ च जानीते राजकोशस्त्वया हृतः। एवमाख्याति काकोऽयं तच्छीघ्रमनुगम्यताम् ॥१२-८३-१३॥
asau cāsau ca jānīte rājakoṣastvayā hṛtaḥ। evamākhyāti kāko'yaṃ tacchīghramanugamyatām ॥12-83-13॥
[असौ (asau) - that (person); च (ca) - and; असौ (asau) - that (person); च (ca) - and; जानीते (jānīte) - knows; राजकोशः (rājakoṣaḥ) - royal treasury; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हृतः (hṛtaḥ) - taken away; एवम् (evam) - thus; आख्याति (ākhyāti) - says; काकः (kākaḥ) - the crow; अयम् (ayam) - this; तत् (tat) - that; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; अनुगम्यताम् (anugamyatām) - let (him) be followed;]
(That and that (person) knows the royal treasury was taken away by you. Thus says the crow, this (one); let that (person) be quickly followed.)
That person and that person know that the royal treasury was taken by you. Thus the crow says this; let that person be quickly pursued.
तथान्यानपि स प्राह राजकोशहरान्सदा। न चास्य वचनं किञ्चिदकृतं श्रूयते क्वचित् ॥१२-८३-१४॥
tathānyān api sa prāha rājakośaharān sadā। na cāsya vacanaṃ kiñcid akṛtaṃ śrūyate kvacit ॥12-83-14॥
[तथा (tathā) - in that manner; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; अपि (api) - also; सः (saḥ) - he; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; राजकोशहरान् (rājakośaharān) - those who steal the royal treasury; सदा (sadā) - always; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अकृतम् (akṛtam) - not done; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere;]
(In that manner, he also always spoke to others who steal the royal treasury; and not even a single word of his is heard as not done anywhere.)
In the same way, he always addressed others who stole the royal treasury; and it is never heard anywhere that any of his words were left unfulfilled.
तेन विप्रकृताः सर्वे राजयुक्ताः कुरूद्वह। तमतिक्रम्य सुप्तस्य निशि काकमपोथयन् ॥१२-८३-१५॥
tena viprakṛtāḥ sarve rājayuktāḥ kurūdvaha। tamatikramya suptasya niśi kākamapothayan ॥12-83-15॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; विप्रकृताः (viprakṛtāḥ) - offended; mistreated; सर्वे (sarve) - all; राजयुक्ताः (rājayuktāḥ) - royal officers; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O best of Kurus; तम् (tam) - him; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - having passed over; सुप्तस्य (suptasya) - of the sleeping (one); निशि (niśi) - at night; काकम् (kākam) - crow; अपोथयन् (apothayan) - they struck;]
(By him, all the royal officers, O best of Kurus, having been offended, having passed over him, at night, struck the crow who was sleeping.)
O best of Kurus, all the royal officers, having been mistreated by him, passed over him and struck the sleeping crow at night.
वायसं तु विनिर्भिन्नं दृष्ट्वा बाणेन पञ्जरे। पूर्वाह्णे ब्राह्मणो वाक्यं क्षेमदर्शिनमब्रवीत् ॥१२-८३-१६॥
vāyasaṃ tu vinirbhinnaṃ dṛṣṭvā bāṇena pañjare। pūrvāhṇe brāhmaṇo vākyaṃ kṣemadarśinam abravīt ॥12-83-16॥
[वायसं (vāyasaṃ) - crow; तु (tu) - but; विनिर्भिन्नं (vinirbhinnaṃ) - completely pierced; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; बाणेन (bāṇena) - by the arrow; पञ्जरे (pañjare) - in the cage; पूर्वाह्णे (pūrvāhṇe) - in the forenoon; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - speech; क्षेमदर्शिनम् (kṣemadarśinam) - auspicious-seeing; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(The crow but completely pierced having seen by the arrow in the cage, in the forenoon, the brāhmaṇa speech auspicious-seeing spoke.)
In the forenoon, seeing the crow completely pierced by the arrow in the cage, the brāhmaṇa spoke auspicious words.
राजंस्त्वामभयं याचे प्रभुं प्राणधनेश्वरम्। अनुज्ञातस्त्वया ब्रूयां वचनं त्वत्पुरो हितम् ॥१२-८३-१७॥
rājamstvāmabhayaṃ yāce prabhuṃ prāṇadhaneśvaram। anujñātastvayā brūyāṃ vacanaṃ tvatpuro hitam ॥12-83-17॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अभयम् (abhayam) - fearlessness; याचे (yāce) - I request; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - O lord; प्राणधनेश्वरम् (prāṇadhaneśvaram) - lord of life and wealth; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; ब्रूयाम् (brūyām) - I may speak; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; त्वत्पुरः (tvat-puraḥ) - before you; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial;]
(O king, I request fearlessness from you, O lord, lord of life and wealth. Having been permitted by you, I may speak a word beneficial before you.)
O king, I seek your assurance of safety, O lord, master of life and wealth. If you permit, I will speak words that are for your benefit in your presence.
मित्रार्थमभिसन्तप्तो भक्त्या सर्वात्मना गतः। अयं तवार्थं हरते यो ब्रूयादक्षमान्वितः ॥१२-८३-१८॥
mitrārtham abhisantapto bhaktyā sarvātmana gatāḥ। ayaṃ tavārthaṃ harate yo brūyād akṣamānvitaḥ॥12-83-18॥
[मित्रार्थम् (mitrārtham) - for the sake of a friend; अभिसन्तप्तः (abhisantaptaḥ) - deeply afflicted; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; सर्वात्मना (sarvātmana) - with all (his) soul; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; अयम् (ayam) - this (person); तव (tava) - your; अर्थम् (artham) - for the sake; हरते (harate) - takes away; यः (yaḥ) - who; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - might say; अक्षमाअन्वितः (akṣamānvitaḥ) - endowed with patience;]
(For the sake of a friend, deeply afflicted, with devotion, with all (his) soul, gone; this (person) for your sake takes away, who might say, endowed with patience.)
He, who has gone for the sake of a friend, deeply afflicted, with devotion and with all his soul, and who, for your sake, takes away (your suffering), and who might speak thus, is endowed with patience.
सम्बुबोधयिषुर्मित्रं सदश्वमिव सारथिः। अतिमन्युप्रसक्तो हि प्रसज्य हितकारणम् ॥१२-८३-१९॥
sambubodhayiṣur mitraṃ sadaśvam iva sārathiḥ। atimanyuprasakto hi prasajya hitakāraṇam ॥12-83-19॥
[सम्बुबोधयिषुः (sambubodhayiṣuḥ) - desiring to awaken completely; मित्रम् (mitram) - friend; सदश्वम् (sadaśvam) - good horse; इव (iva) - like; सारथिः (sārathiḥ) - charioteer; अतिमन्युप्रसक्तः (atimanyuprasaktaḥ) - overcome by excessive anger; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रसज्य (prasajya) - having subdued; हितकारणम् (hitakāraṇam) - for the sake of benefit;]
(Desiring to awaken completely his friend, the charioteer, like (one does) a good horse, having subdued (him) who is overcome by excessive anger, indeed, for the sake of benefit.)
Just as a charioteer awakens a good horse, he, wishing to fully awaken his friend who was overcome by excessive anger, subdued him for his own good.
तथाविधस्य सुहृदः क्षन्तव्यं संविजानता। ऐश्वर्यमिच्छता नित्यं पुरुषेण बुभूषता ॥१२-८३-२०॥
tathā-vidhasya suhṛdaḥ kṣantavyaṃ saṃvijānatā। aiśvaryam icchatā nityaṃ puruṣeṇa bubhūṣatā ॥12-83-20॥
[तथाविधस्य (tathā-vidhasya) - of such a kind; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - of a friend; क्षन्तव्यं (kṣantavyam) - to be forgiven; संविजानता (saṃvijānatā) - by one who understands; ऐश्वर्यम् (aiśvaryam) - sovereignty; इच्छता (icchatā) - by one desiring; नित्यं (nityam) - always; पुरुषेण (puruṣeṇa) - by a person; बुभूषता (bubhūṣatā) - by one wishing to enjoy;]
(Of such a kind, of a friend, to be forgiven, by one who understands; sovereignty, by one desiring, always, by a person, by one wishing to enjoy.)
A person who always desires sovereignty and wishes to enjoy it, understanding the nature of such a friend, should forgive him.
तं राजा प्रत्युवाचेदं यन्मा किञ्चिद्भवान्वदेत्। कस्मादहं न क्षमेयमाकाङ्क्षन्नात्मनो हितम् ॥१२-८३-२१॥
taṃ rājā pratyuvācedaṃ yanmā kiñcidbhavān vadet। kasmādahaṃ na kṣameyam ākāṅkṣann ātmano hitam ॥12-83-21॥

(The king replied to him this: "Why should I not endure whatever you might say to me, desiring my own welfare?")
The king replied: "Why would I not tolerate anything you say to me, since I desire my own welfare?"
ब्राह्मण प्रतिजानीहि प्रब्रूहि यदि चेच्छसि। करिष्यामि हि ते वाक्यं यद्यन्मां विप्र वक्ष्यसि ॥१२-८३-२२॥
brāhmaṇa pratijānīhi prabrūhi yadi cecchasi। kariṣyāmi hi te vākyaṃ yadyanmāṃ vipra vakṣyasi ॥12-83-22॥

(Brāhmaṇa, promise, speak forth if indeed you desire. I shall do indeed your word, whatever to me, brāhmaṇa, you will say.)
O brāhmaṇa, promise and speak if you truly wish. I will indeed do whatever you, O brāhmaṇa, will say to me.

ज्ञात्वा नयानपायांश्च भृत्यतस्ते भयानि च। भक्त्या वृत्तिं समाख्यातुं भवतोऽन्तिकमागमम् ॥१२-८३-२३॥
jñātvā nayānapāyāṃś ca bhṛtyatas te bhayāni ca| bhaktyā vṛttiṃ samākhyātuṃ bhavato'ntikam āgamam ॥12-83-23॥
[ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; नय-अनपायान् (naya-anapāyān) - the means and dangers; च (ca) - and; भृत्यतः (bhṛtyataḥ) - from the servant; ते (te) - your; भयानि (bhayāni) - fears; च (ca) - and; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; वृत्तिम् (vṛttim) - conduct; समाख्यातुम् (samākhyātum) - to fully declare; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - to you; अन्तिकम् (antikam) - presence; आगमम् (āgamam) - coming;]
(Having known the means and dangers and your fears from the servant, with devotion, to fully declare the conduct, I have come to your presence.)

प्रागेवोक्तश्च दोषोऽयमाचार्यैर्नृपसेविनाम्। अगतीकगतिर्ह्येषा या राज्ञा सह जीविका ॥१२-८३-२४॥
prāgevoktaś ca doṣo'yam ācāryair nṛpasevinām। agatīka-gatir hy eṣā yā rājñā saha jīvikā॥12-83-24॥
[प्राग्-एव-उक्तः-च (prāg-eva-uktaḥ-ca) - previously-indeed-said-and; दोषः-अयम् (doṣaḥ-ayam) - fault-this; आचार्यैः-नृप-सेविनाम् (ācāryaiḥ-nṛpa-sevinām) - by teachers-of those serving kings; अगतीक-गतिः-हि-एषा (agatīka-gatiḥ-hi-eṣā) - wrong-path-going-indeed-this; या-राज्ञा-सह-जीविका (yā-rājñā-saha-jīvikā) - which-with king-together-livelihood;]
(And this fault, previously stated by the teachers of those serving kings, is indeed the going on a wrong path, which is the livelihood together with the king.)
This fault, previously mentioned by the teachers of royal servants, is that the livelihood dependent on the king is indeed a misguided path.
आशीविषैश्च तस्याहुः सङ्गतं यस्य राजभिः। बहुमित्राश्च राजानो बह्वमित्रास्तथैव च ॥१२-८३-२५॥
āśīviṣaiś ca tasyāhuḥ saṅgataṃ yasya rājabhiḥ। bahumittrāś ca rājāno bahvamitrās tathaiva ca ॥12-83-25॥
[आशीविषैः (āśīviṣaiḥ) - with venomous snakes; च (ca) - and; तस्य (tasya) - of him; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; सङ्गतम् (saṅgatam) - associated; यस्स्य (yasya) - whose; राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - with kings; बहुमित्राः (bahumittrāḥ) - having many friends; च (ca) - and; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; बह्वमित्राः (bahvamitrāḥ) - having many enemies; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and;]
(With venomous snakes and, of him, they say, associated, whose, with kings. Having many friends and kings, having many enemies likewise and.)
They say that one who is associated with kings is like one surrounded by venomous snakes; kings have many friends and likewise many enemies.
तेभ्यः सर्वेभ्य एवाहुर्भयं राजोपसेविनाम्। अथैषामेकतो राजन्मुहूर्तादेव भीर्भवेत् ॥१२-८३-२६॥
tebhyaḥ sarvebhya evāhur bhayaṃ rājopasevinām। athaiṣām ekato rājan muhūrtād eva bhīr bhavet ॥12-83-26॥
[तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - from them; सर्वेभ्यः (sarvebhyaḥ) - from all; एव (eva) - indeed; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; राज-उपसेविनाम् (rāja-upasevinām) - of those serving the king; अथ (atha) - then; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; एकतः (ekataḥ) - on one side; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मुहूर्तात् (muhūrtāt) - from a moment; एव (eva) - indeed; भीः (bhīḥ) - fear; भवेत् (bhavet) - may arise;]
(From them, from all, indeed, they say, fear (is) of those serving the king. Then, of these, on one side, O king, from a moment indeed, fear may arise.)
They say that among all fears, the greatest is for those who serve the king. O king, even in a single moment, fear may arise for them.
नैकान्तेनाप्रमादो हि कर्तुं शक्यो महीपतौ। न तु प्रमादः कर्तव्यः कथञ्चिद्भूतिमिच्छता ॥१२-८३-२७॥
naikāntenāpramādo hi kartuṃ śakyo mahīpatau। na tu pramādaḥ kartavyaḥ kathaṃcid bhūtim icchatā ॥12-83-27॥
[नैकान्तेन (naikāntena) - not absolutely; अप्रमादः (apramādaḥ) - non-negligence; हि (hi) - indeed; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; महीपतौ (mahīpatau) - for a king; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; प्रमादः (pramādaḥ) - negligence; कर्तव्यः (kartavyaḥ) - should be done; कथञ्चित् (kathaṃcit) - in any way; भूतिम् (bhūtim) - prosperity; इच्छता (icchatā) - by one desiring;]
(Not absolutely is non-negligence indeed possible to do for a king. But negligence should not be done in any way by one desiring prosperity.)
It is not possible for a king to be absolutely free from negligence, but one who desires prosperity should never be negligent in any way.
प्रमादाद्धि स्खलेद्राजा स्खलिते नास्ति जीवितम्। अग्निं दीप्तमिवासीदेद्राजानमुपशिक्षितः ॥१२-८३-२८॥
pramādāddhi skhaled rājā skhalite nāsti jīvitam। agniṃ dīptam ivāsīded rājānam upaśikṣitaḥ ॥12-83-28॥
[प्रमादात् (pramādāt) - from negligence; हि (hi) - indeed; स्खलेत् (skhalet) - may slip; राजा (rājā) - king; स्खलिते (skhalite) - when slipped; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; अग्निम् (agniṃ) - fire; दीप्तम् (dīptam) - blazing; इव (iva) - like; आसीदेत् (āsīdet) - should sit near; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; उपशिक्षितः (upaśikṣitaḥ) - well-instructed;]
(From negligence indeed may the king slip; when slipped, there is no life. Like (one) should sit near blazing fire, (so) should (one) sit near a well-instructed king.)
If a king errs due to negligence, his life is lost; just as one should sit near blazing fire, so should one approach a well-instructed king.
आशीविषमिव क्रुद्धं प्रभुं प्राणधनेश्वरम्। यत्नेनोपचरेन्नित्यं नाहमस्मीति मानवः ॥१२-८३-२९॥
āśīviṣam iva kruddhaṃ prabhuṃ prāṇadhanaiśvaram। yatnenopacaren nityaṃ nāham asmīti mānavaḥ ॥12-83-29॥
[आशीविषम् (āśīviṣam) - like a venomous serpent; इव (iva) - as; like; क्रुद्धम् (kruddham) - angry; enraged; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - master; lord; प्राणधनेश्वरम् (prāṇadhanaiśvaram) - the lord of life and wealth; यत्नेन (yatnena) - with effort; diligently; उपचरेत् (upacaret) - should serve; should attend; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; constantly; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्मि (asmi) - am; इति (iti) - thus; so; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a man; human being;]
(Like a venomous serpent, an angry master, the lord of life and wealth, should always be served diligently by a man, not thinking 'I am (independent),' thus.)
A person should always serve an angry master, who is the lord of life and wealth, just as one would cautiously approach a venomous serpent, never thinking 'I am independent.'
दुर्व्याहृताच्छङ्कमानो दुष्कृताद्दुरधिष्ठितात्। दुरासिताद्दुर्व्रजितादिङ्गितादङ्गचेष्टितात् ॥१२-८३-३०॥
durvyāhṛtāc chaṅkamāno duṣkṛtād duradhiṣṭhitāt। durāsitād durvrajitād iṅgitād aṅgaceṣṭitāt ॥12-83-30॥
[दुर्व्याहृतात् (durvyāhṛtāt) - from ill-spoken; शङ्कमानः (śaṅkamānaḥ) - suspecting; दुष्कृतात् (duṣkṛtāt) - from evil deed; दुरधिष्ठितात् (duradhiṣṭhitāt) - from badly established; दुरासितात् (durāsitāt) - from badly seated; दुर्व्रजितात् (durvrajitāt) - from badly traversed; इङ्गितात् (iṅgitāt) - from gesture; अङ्गचेष्टितात् (aṅgaceṣṭitāt) - from bodily movement;]
(Suspecting from ill-spoken, from evil deed, from badly established, from badly seated, from badly traversed, from gesture, from bodily movement.)
He suspects from ill-spoken words, evil deeds, improper establishment, improper seating, improper movement, gestures, and bodily actions.
देवतेव हि सर्वार्थान्कुर्याद्राजा प्रसादितः। वैश्वानर इव क्रुद्धः समूलमपि निर्दहेत् ॥ इति राजन्मयः प्राह वर्तते च तथैव तत् ॥१२-८३-३१॥
devateva hi sarvārthān kuryād rājā prasāditaḥ। vaiśvānara iva kruddhaḥ samūlam api nirdahēt ॥ iti rājan mayaḥ prāha vartate ca tathaiva tat ॥12-83-31॥
[देवतेव (devateva) - like a deity; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वार्थान् (sarvārthān) - all purposes; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should accomplish; राजा (rājā) - king; प्रसादितः (prasāditaḥ) - being pleased; वैश्वानरः (vaiśvānaraḥ) - Agni (fire, as Vaiśvānara); इव (iva) - like; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; समूलम् (samūlam) - with the root; अपि (api) - even; निर्दहेत् (nirdahēt) - should burn; इति (iti) - thus; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मयः (mayaḥ) - Maya; प्राह (prāha) - said; वर्तते (vartate) - it is; च (ca) - and; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Like a deity indeed, all purposes should be accomplished by a king when pleased; like Agni, when angry, he should burn even with the root. Thus, O king, Maya said, and it is just so that.)
When pleased, a king should accomplish all purposes like a deity; but when angry, like Agni, he should destroy everything from the root. Thus spoke Maya, O king, and so it is.
अथ भूयांसमेवार्थं करिष्यामि पुनः पुनः। ददात्यस्मद्विधोऽमात्यो बुद्धिसाहाय्यमापदि ॥१२-८३-३२॥
atha bhūyāṁsamevārthaṁ kariṣyāmi punaḥ punaḥ। dadātyasmadvidho'mātyo buddhisāhāyyamāpadi ॥12-83-32॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; भूयांसम् (bhūyāṁsam) - greater; more; एव (eva) - indeed; only; अर्थम् (artham) - purpose; object; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; I will perform; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; अस्मद्विधः (asmad-vidhaḥ) - like me; of my kind; अमात्यः (amātyaḥ) - minister; बुद्धि-साहाय्यम् (buddhi-sāhāyyam) - intellectual assistance; आपदि (āpadi) - in calamity; in adversity;]
(Now, I shall indeed do a greater purpose again and again. A minister like me gives intellectual assistance in adversity.)
Now, I will repeatedly undertake an even greater purpose. A minister of my kind provides counsel and support in times of difficulty.
वायसश्चैव मे राजन्नन्तकायाभिसंहितः। न च मेऽत्र भवान्गर्ह्यो न च येषां भवान्प्रियः ॥ हिताहितांस्तु बुध्येथा मा परोक्षमतिर्भव ॥१२-८३-३३॥
vāyasaś caiva me rājan nantakāyābhisaṁhitaḥ। na ca me'tra bhavān garhyo na ca yeṣāṁ bhavān priyaḥ॥ hitāhitāṁs tu budhyethā mā parokṣamatir bhava॥12-83-33॥
[वायसः (vāyasaḥ) - crow; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अनन्तकाय (nantakāya) - with beings of Yama (death); अभिसंहितः (abhisaṁhitaḥ) - associated; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; अत्र (atra) - here; भवान् (bhavān) - you; गर्ह्यः (garhyaḥ) - blameworthy; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; भवान् (bhavān) - you; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; हिताहितान् (hitāhitān) - good and bad; तु (tu) - but; बुध्येथाः (budhyethāḥ) - you should understand; मा (mā) - do not; परोक्षमतिः (parokṣamatiḥ) - having indirect mind; भव (bhava) - be;]
(The crow indeed, O king, is associated with beings of Yama (death) for me. Here, you are not blameworthy to me, nor are you dear to those for whom you are dear. But you should understand good and bad; do not be one with an indirect mind.)

ये त्वादानपरा एव वसन्ति भवतो गृहे। अभूतिकामा भूतानां तादृशैर्मेऽभिसंहितम् ॥१२-८३-३४॥
ye tvādānaparā eva vasanti bhavato gṛhe। abhūtikāmā bhūtānāṃ tādṛśairme'bhisaṃhitam ॥12-83-34॥
[ये (ye) - who; (plural, masculine) त्वादानपरा (tvādānaparā) - other than giving to you; (tvāt - to you, dāna - giving, aparā - other) एव (eva) - indeed; वसन्ति (vasanti) - dwell; भवतो (bhavato) - your; गृहे (gṛhe) - in house; अभूतिकामा (abhūtikāmā) - desiring non-prosperity; भूतानां (bhūtānāṃ) - of beings; तादृशैः (tādṛśaiḥ) - by such (people); मे (me) - my; अभिसंहितम् (abhisaṃhitam) - associated, joined; ॥१२-८३-३४॥ (॥12-83-34॥) - ;]
(Who indeed dwell in your house, other than those giving to you, desiring non-prosperity of beings, by such (people) my association.)
Those who dwell in your house, except those who give to you, are desirous of the misfortune of beings; my association is with such as these.
ये वा भवद्विनाशेन राज्यमिच्छन्त्यनन्तरम्। अन्तरैरभिसन्धाय राजन्सिध्यन्ति नान्यथा ॥१२-८३-३५॥
ye vā bhavadvināśena rājyam icchanti anantaram। antaraiḥ abhisandhāya rājan sidhyanti na anyathā ॥12-83-35॥

(Who or by your destruction kingdom desire immediately after, by means having plotted, O king, succeed not otherwise.)
O king, those who desire the kingdom immediately after your destruction, having plotted by means, succeed not otherwise.
तेषामहं भयाद्राजन्गमिष्याम्यन्यमाश्रमम्। तैर्हि मे सन्धितो बाणः काके निपतितः प्रभो ॥१२-८३-३६॥

(O king, from fear of them I shall go to another hermitage. Indeed, by them my shot arrow has fallen at the crow, O lord.)
O king, out of fear of them, I will go to another hermitage. Indeed, my arrow shot by them has fallen upon the crow, O lord.
छद्मना मम काकश्च गमितो यमसादनम्। दृष्टं ह्येतन्मया राजंस्तपोदीर्घेण चक्षुषा ॥१२-८३-३७॥
chadmanā mama kākaś ca gamito yamasādanam। dṛṣṭaṃ hy etan mayā rājaṃs tapodīrghena cakṣuṣā ॥12-83-37॥
[छद्मना (chadmanā) - by disguise; मम (mama) - my; काकः (kākaḥ) - crow; च (ca) - and; गमितः (gamitaḥ) - sent; यमसादनम् (yamasādanam) - to the abode of Yama; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तपः-दीर्घेण (tapaḥ-dīrghena) - by long austerity; चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - by the eye;]
(By disguise my crow also was sent to the abode of Yama. Indeed, O king, this was seen by me with the eye made powerful by long austerity.)
By disguise, my crow too was sent to Yama's abode. O king, I have seen this with the vision gained through long austerity.
बहुनक्रझषग्राहां तिमिङ्गिलगणायुताम्। काकेन बडिशेनेमामतार्षं त्वामहं नदीम् ॥१२-८३-३८॥
bahunakra-jhaṣa-grāhāṃ timiṅgila-gaṇāyutām। kākena baḍiśenemāmatārṣaṃ tvāmahaṃ nadīm ॥12-83-38॥
[बहु (bahu) - many; नक्र (nakra) - crocodiles; झष (jhaṣa) - fishes; ग्राहां (grāhām) - alligators; तिमिङ्गिल (timiṅgila) - whale-fishes; गण (gaṇa) - groups; आयुताम् (āyutām) - endowed with; काकेन (kākena) - by a crow; बडिशेन (baḍiśena) - by a hook; इमाम् (imām) - this; अतार्षम् (atārṣam) - not crossed; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; नदीम् (nadīm) - river;]
(Many crocodiles, fishes, alligators, whale-fish groups endowed with, by a crow, by a hook, this not crossed, you, I, river.)
I, who am like a crow with a hook, have not crossed you, the river endowed with many crocodiles, fishes, alligators, and groups of whale-fish.
स्थाण्वश्मकण्टकवतीं व्याघ्रसिंहगजाकुलाम्। दुरासदां दुष्प्रवेशां गुहां हैमवतीमिव ॥१२-८३-३९॥
sthāṇvaśmakaṇṭakavatīṃ vyāghrasiṃhagajākulām। durāsadāṃ duṣpraveśāṃ guhāṃ haimavatīmiva ॥12-83-39॥

भवतैव कृता राजन्भवता परिपालिताः। भवन्तं पर्यवज्ञाय जिघांसन्ति भवत्प्रियम् ॥१२-८३-४९॥

(Indeed by you they were made, O king, by you protected. Disregarding you, they wish to harm what is dear to you.)
O king, it is you who made them and protected them; yet, disregarding you, they now seek to harm what you hold dear.
उषितं शङ्कमानेन प्रमादं परिरक्षता। अन्तःसर्प इवागारे वीरपत्न्या इवालये ॥ शीलं जिज्ञासमानेन राज्ञश्च सहजीविना ॥१२-८३-५०॥
uṣitaṃ śaṅkamānena pramādaṃ parirakṣatā। antaḥsarpa iva āgāre vīrapatnyā iva ālaye ॥ śīlaṃ jijñāsamānena rājñaś ca sahajīvinā ॥12-83-50॥

(Dwelt by one who is suspecting, negligence is protected; like an internal snake in the house, like by a hero's wife in the abode. Character, by one who is investigating, and of the king, by a co-dweller.)
Negligence, when dwelt upon by one who is suspicious, is guarded like a snake inside the house or like a hero's wife in her home. Character, when examined by a co-dweller of the king, is similarly protected.
कच्चिज्जितेन्द्रियो राजा कच्चिदभ्यन्तरा जिताः। कच्चिदेषां प्रियो राजा कच्चिद्राज्ञः प्रियाः प्रजाः ॥१२-८३-५१॥
kaccijjitendriyo rājā kaccidabhyantarā jitāḥ। kaccideṣāṃ priyo rājā kaccidrājñaḥ priyāḥ prajāḥ ॥12-83-51॥

(Whether the king is one who has conquered his senses; whether the inner (people) are conquered; whether the king is dear to these (people); whether the subjects are dear to the king.)
Is the king self-controlled? Are his close associates under control? Is the king dear to his people? Are the subjects dear to the king?
जिज्ञासुरिह सम्प्राप्तस्तवाहं राजसत्तम। तस्य मे रोचसे राजन्क्षुधितस्येव भोजनम् ॥१२-८३-५२॥
jijñāsur iha samprāptas tavāhaṃ rājasattama। tasya me rocase rājan kṣudhitasyeva bhojanam ॥12-83-52॥

(One who desires to know here has arrived to you, I, O best of kings. Of that, to me, you are pleasing, O king, like food to the hungry.)
O best of kings, I, who have come here seeking knowledge, find you as pleasing to me as food is to a hungry man.
अमात्या मे न रोचन्ते वितृष्णस्य यथोदकम्। भवतोऽर्थकृदित्येव मयि दोषो हि तैः कृतः ॥१२-८३-५३॥
amātyā me na rocante vitṛṣṇasya yathodakam। bhavato'rthakṛdityeva mayi doṣo hi taiḥ kṛtaḥ ॥12-83-53॥

(Ministers to me are not pleasing, to one who is free from desire, just as water (is not pleasing). Your (ministers) act for gain, thus indeed, in me, the fault indeed by them has been made.)

(Who do not desire you, O Brāhmaṇa, they will not stay in my house. By you alone indeed this should be known, what now (is) immediately after.)
O Brāhmaṇa, those who do not wish for you will not remain in my house. Know this from yourself alone: what is to happen next, now.
यथा स्याद्दुष्कृतो दण्डो यथा च सुकृतं कृतम्। तथा समीक्ष्य भगवञ्श्रेयसे विनियुङ्क्ष्व माम् ॥१२-८३-५७॥

(Just as there should be punishment for an evil deed and reward for a good deed, so, having considered, O Lord, assign me for welfare.)
O Lord, just as punishment is given for evil and reward for good, in the same way, after due consideration, assign me to what is for the best.

(Having a single fault, indeed, many may crush even thorns. From fear of breach of secret counsel, O king, therefore, this I say to you.)

[वयं (vayaṃ) - we; तु (tu) - but; ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇā) - Brāhmaṇas; नाम (nāma) - so-called; मृदुदण्डाः (mṛdudaṇḍāḥ) - gentle in punishment; कृपालवः (kṛpālavaḥ) - compassionate; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; चेत् (cet) - if; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - for you; परेषां (pareṣāṃ) - for others; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - just as; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - for oneself;]
(We but Brāhmaṇas so-called gentle in punishment, compassionate; well-being if I wish for you, for others and just as for oneself.)
But we Brāhmaṇas are said to be gentle in punishment and compassionate; I wish well-being for you, for others, just as for myself.
राजन्नात्मानमाचक्षे सम्बन्धी भवतो ह्यहम्। मुनिः कालकवृक्षीय इत्येवमभिसञ्ज्ञितः ॥१२-८३-६१॥
rājan nātmānam ācakṣe sambandhī bhavato hy aham | muniḥ kālakavṛkṣīya ityevam abhisañjñitaḥ ||12-83-61||
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - myself; आचक्षे (ācakṣe) - I declare; सम्बन्धी (sambandhī) - relative; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; हि (hi) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; कालकवृक्षीय (kālakavṛkṣīya) - of the lineage of Kālaka tree; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; अभिसञ्ज्ञितः (abhisañjñitaḥ) - designated;]
(O king, I declare myself as indeed your relative. The sage of the Kālaka tree lineage is thus designated in this way.)
O king, I declare myself to be your relative. I am known as the sage of the Kālaka tree lineage.
पितुः सखा च भवतः संमतः सत्यसङ्गरः। व्यापन्ने भवतो राज्ये राजन्पितरि संस्थिते ॥१२-८३-६२॥
pituḥ sakhā ca bhavataḥ saṃmataḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ। vyāpanne bhavato rājye rājanpitari saṃsthite ॥12-83-62॥
[पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; सखा (sakhā) - friend; च (ca) - and; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; संमतः (saṃmataḥ) - approved; सत्यसङ्गरः (satyasaṅgaraḥ) - one who is steadfast in truth; व्यापन्ने (vyāpanne) - when afflicted; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पितरि (pitari) - when the father; संस्थिते (saṃsthite) - has passed away;]
(Of the father, friend and of you, approved, one who is steadfast in truth; when afflicted, of you, in the kingdom, O king, when the father has passed away.)
O king, he was the friend of your father and yours, approved and steadfast in truth; when your kingdom was afflicted and your father had passed away.
सर्वकामान्परित्यज्य तपस्तप्तं तदा मया। स्नेहात्त्वां प्रब्रवीम्येतन्मा भूयो विभ्रमेदिति ॥१२-८३-६३॥
sarvakāmān parityajya tapas taptaṃ tadā mayā। snehāt tvāṃ prabravīmy etan mā bhūyo vibhramed iti ॥12-83-63॥
[सर्वकामान् (sarvakāmān) - all desires; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; तपः (tapas) - austerity; तप्तं (taptaṃ) - practiced; तदा (tadā) - then; मया (mayā) - by me; स्नेहात् (snehāt) - out of affection; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; प्रब्रवीमि (prabravīmi) - I declare; एतत् (etat) - this; मा (mā) - do not; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; विभ्रमेत् (vibhramet) - be confused; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Having abandoned all desires, austerity was practiced then by me; out of affection to you, I declare this: do not again be confused, thus.)
Having renounced all desires, I then practiced austerity; out of affection for you, I declare this: do not be confused again.
उभे दृष्ट्वा दुःखसुखे राज्यं प्राप्य यदृच्छया। राज्येनामात्यसंस्थेन कथं राजन्प्रमाद्यसि ॥१२-८३-६४॥
ubhe dṛṣṭvā duḥkhasukhe rājyaṃ prāpya yadṛcchayā। rājyenāmātyasaṃsthena kathaṃ rājanpramādyasi ॥12-83-64॥
[उभे (ubhe) - both; (dual) दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; दुःखसुखे (duḥkhasukhe) - pain and pleasure; (dual) राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance; राज्येन (rājyena) - by the kingdom; अमात्यसंस्थेन (amātyasaṃsthena) - with the ministers' establishment; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रमाद्यसि (pramādyasi) - are you negligent;]
(Having seen both pain and pleasure, having obtained the kingdom by chance, with the ministers' establishment, by the kingdom, how, O king, are you negligent?)
O king, having experienced both pain and pleasure and having attained the kingdom by chance, and with the support of the ministers, how is it that you are negligent?
भीष्म उवाच॥

ततो राजकुले नान्दी सञ्जज्ञे भूयसी पुनः। पुरोहितकुले चैव सम्प्राप्ते ब्राह्मणर्षभे ॥१२-८३-६५॥
tato rājakule nāndī sañjajñe bhūyasī punaḥ। purohitakule caiva samprāpte brāhmaṇarṣabhe ॥12-83-65॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजकुले (rājakule) - in the royal family; नान्दी (nāndī) - auspicious ceremony; सञ्जज्ञे (sañjajñe) - arose; भूयसी (bhūyasī) - great; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुरोहितकुले (purohitakule) - in the priestly family; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; ब्राह्मणर्षभे (brāhmaṇarṣabhe) - the foremost among Brāhmaṇas;]
(Then in the royal family a great auspicious ceremony arose again. And indeed, when the foremost among Brāhmaṇas had arrived in the priestly family.)

एकच्छत्रां महीं कृत्वा कौसल्याय यशस्विने। मुनिः कालकवृक्षीय ईजे क्रतुभिरुत्तमैः ॥१२-८३-६६॥
ekacchatrāṃ mahīṃ kṛtvā kausalyāya yaśasvine। muniḥ kālakavṛkṣīya ije kratubhiruttamaiḥ ॥12-83-66॥
[एकच्छत्राम् (ekacchatrām) - one sovereignty; महीम् (mahīm) - earth; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; कौसल्याय (kausalyāya) - to Kausalya; यशस्विने (yaśasvine) - to the illustrious; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; कालकवृक्षीय (kālakavṛkṣīya) - descendant of Kalaka tree; ईजे (īje) - performed (sacrifices); क्रतुभिः (kratubhiḥ) - with sacrifices; उत्तमैः (uttamaiḥ) - excellent;]
(Having made the earth under one sovereignty, to Kausalya, the illustrious, the sage, descendant of Kalaka tree, performed excellent sacrifices.)
Having established one sovereignty over the earth, the illustrious sage, descendant of the Kalaka tree, performed excellent sacrifices for Kausalya.
हितं तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा कौसल्योऽन्वशिषन्महीम्। तथा च कृतवान्राजा यथोक्तं तेन भारत ॥१२-८३-६७॥
hitaṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā kausalyo'nvaśiṣanmahīm। tathā ca kṛtavānrājā yathoktaṃ tena bhārata ॥12-83-67॥
[हितम् (hitaṃ) - beneficial; तत् (tat) - that; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कौस्यल्यः (kausalyaḥ) - Kausalya (the king); अन्वशिषत् (anvaśiṣat) - ruled over; महीम् (mahīm) - the earth; तथा (tathā) - thus; च (ca) - and; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - did; राजा (rājā) - the king; यथोक्तम् (yathoktam) - as spoken; तेन (tena) - by him; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Having heard that beneficial speech, Kausalya ruled the earth. And the king did thus as spoken by him, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, having listened to those beneficial words, Kausalya ruled the earth, and the king acted exactly as was instructed by him.
