atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। nidarśanakaraṃ loke sajjanācaritaṃ sadā ॥12-117-1॥

तस्य संदृश्य सद्भावमुपविष्टस्य धीमतः। सर्वसत्त्वाः समीपस्था भवन्ति वनचारिणः ॥१२-११७-५॥

na bhayaṃ dvīpinaḥ kāryaṃ mṛtyutas te kathaṃcana। eṣa śvarūparahito dvīpī bhavasi putraka ॥12-117-15॥

sa tu śvā vyāghratāṃ prāpya balavān piśitāśanaḥ। na mūlaphalabhogeṣu spṛhām apy akarot tadā ॥12-117-20॥

(He but the dog, having attained tiger-hood, strong, flesh-eater, not in the enjoyments of roots and fruits, desire even did make then.)
But he, the dog, having become a strong, flesh-eating tiger, then did not even have any desire for the enjoyment of roots and fruits.
यथा मृगपतिर्नित्यं प्रकाङ्क्षति वनौकसः। तथैव स महाराज व्याघ्रः समभवत्तदा ॥१२-११७-२१॥
yathā mṛgapatir nityaṃ prakāṅkṣati vanaukasaḥ। tathaiva sa mahārāja vyāghraḥ samabhavat tadā ॥12-117-21॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; मृगपतिः (mṛgapatiḥ) - lord of beasts; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; प्रकाङ्क्षति (prakāṅkṣati) - desires eagerly; वनौकसः (vanaukasaḥ) - forest-dwellers; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; सः (saḥ) - he; महाराजः (mahārājaḥ) - great king; व्याघ्रः (vyāghraḥ) - tiger; समभवत् (samabhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Just as the lord of beasts always eagerly desires the forest-dwellers, in the same way, he, the great king, then became a tiger.)
Just as the king of beasts always longs for the forest-dwellers, so at that time, O great king, he became a tiger.
व्याघ्रस्तूटजमूलस्थस्तृप्तः सुप्तो हतैर्मृगैः। नागश्चागात्तमुद्देशं मत्तो मेघ इवोत्थितः ॥१२-११७-२२॥
vyāghras tūṭajamūlasthas tṛptaḥ supto hatair mṛgaiḥ। nāgaś cāgāt tamuddeśaṃ matto megha ivotthitaḥ॥12-117-22॥
[व्याघ्रः (vyāghraḥ) - tiger; तूटजमूलस्थः (tūṭajamūlasthaḥ) - situated at the base of a Tūṭaja tree; तृप्तः (tṛptaḥ) - satisfied; सुप्तः (suptaḥ) - asleep; हतैः (hatair) - by the slain; मृगैः (mṛgaiḥ) - deer; नागः (nāgaḥ) - elephant; च (ca) - and; आगात् (āgāt) - came; तम् (tam) - to that; उद्देशम् (uddeśam) - place; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - intoxicated; मेघः (meghaḥ) - cloud; इव (iva) - like; उत्थितः (utthitaḥ) - risen;]
(The tiger, situated at the base of a Tūṭaja tree, satisfied, asleep with the slain deer; and the elephant came to that place, intoxicated, like a cloud arisen.)
The tiger, having eaten its fill, lay asleep at the base of the Tūṭaja tree among the slain deer; then an intoxicated elephant, like a rising cloud, came to that spot.
प्रभिन्नकरटः प्रांशुः पद्मी विततमस्तकः। सुविषाणो महाकायो मेघगम्भीरनिस्वनः ॥१२-११७-२३॥
prabhinnakaraṭaḥ prāṃśuḥ padmī vitatamastakaḥ। suviṣāṇo mahākāyo meghagambhīranisvanaḥ ॥12-117-23॥

(Broken-tusked, tall, having lotuses, broad-headed, having good tusks, great-bodied, having a sound deep as thunder.)
He was broken-tusked, tall, lotus-bearing, broad-headed, with fine tusks, a massive body, and a voice deep as thunder.
तं दृष्ट्वा कुञ्जरं मत्तमायान्तं मदगर्वितम्। व्याघ्रो हस्तिभयात्त्रस्तस्तमृषिं शरणं ययौ ॥१२-११७-२४॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā kuñjaraṃ mattam āyāntaṃ madagarvitam। vyāghraḥ hastibhayāt trastas tam ṛṣiṃ śaraṇaṃ yayau॥12-117-24॥

(Having seen him, the intoxicated, proud elephant approaching, the tiger, frightened from fear of the elephant, went to the sage for refuge.)
When the tiger saw the intoxicated, proud elephant approaching, frightened by the elephant, he went to the sage for refuge.
ततोऽनयत्कुञ्जरतां तं व्याघ्रमृषिसत्तमः। महामेघोपमं दृष्ट्वा तं स भीतोऽभवद्गजः ॥१२-११७-२५॥
tato' nayat kuñjaratāṃ taṃ vyāghram ṛṣisattamaḥ। mahāmeghopamaṃ dṛṣṭvā taṃ sa bhīto 'bhavad gajaḥ॥12-117-25॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; अनयत् (anayat) - led; कुञ्जरताम् (kuñjaratām) - to the state of an elephant; तम् (tam) - him; व्याघ्रम् (vyāghram) - the tiger; ऋषिसत्तमः (ṛṣisattamaḥ) - the best among sages; महामेघोपमम् (mahāmeghopamam) - like a great cloud; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तम् (tam) - him; सः (saḥ) - he; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - frightened; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; गजः (gajaḥ) - the elephant;]
(From there, the best among sages led the tiger to the state of an elephant; having seen him like a great cloud, he, the elephant, became frightened.)
Then the best of sages led the tiger to become an elephant; seeing him like a great cloud, the elephant became afraid.
ततः कमलषण्डानि शल्लकीगहनानि च। व्यचरत्स मुदा युक्तः पद्मरेणुविभूषितः ॥१२-११७-२६॥
tataḥ kamalaṣaṇḍāni śallakīgahanāni ca। vyacaratsa mudā yuktaḥ padmareṇuvibhūṣitaḥ ॥12-117-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कमलषण्डानि (kamalaṣaṇḍāni) - lotus-thickets; शल्लकीगहनानि (śallakīgahanāni) - thickets of śallakī trees; च (ca) - and; व्यचरत् (vyacarat) - wandered; स (sa) - he; मुदा (mudā) - with joy; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; पद्मरेणुविभूषितः (padmareṇuvibhūṣitaḥ) - adorned with lotus-dust;]
(Then, lotus-thickets, thickets of śallakī trees and, wandered he with joy endowed, adorned with lotus-dust.)
Then he, adorned with lotus-dust and filled with joy, wandered through the lotus thickets and the dense śallakī groves.
कदाचिद्रममाणस्य हस्तिनः सुमुखं तदा। ऋषेस्तस्योटजस्थस्य कालोऽगच्छन्निशानिशम् ॥१२-११७-२७॥
kadācidramamāṇasya hastinaḥ sumukhaṃ tadā। ṛṣestasyoṭajasthasya kālo'gacchanniśāniśam ॥12-117-27॥
[कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; रममाणस्य (ramamāṇasya) - of enjoying; हस्तिनः (hastinaḥ) - of the elephant; सुमुखं (sumukham) - Sumukha; तदा (tadā) - then; ऋषेः (ṛṣeḥ) - of the sage; तस्य (tasya) - his; उटजस्थस्य (uṭajasthasya) - dwelling in the hut; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - passed; निशा-निशम् (niśā-niśam) - night after night;]
(At some time, for the enjoying elephant Sumukha, then, for the sage, for him dwelling in the hut, time passed night after night.)
Once, as the elephant Sumukha was enjoying himself, time passed night after night for the sage who was living in his hut.
अथाजगाम तं देशं केसरी केसरारुणः। गिरिकन्दरजो भीमः सिंहो नागकुलान्तकः ॥१२-११७-२८॥
athājagāma taṃ deśaṃ kesarī kesarāruṇaḥ। girikandarajo bhīmaḥ siṃho nāgakulāntakaḥ ॥12-117-28॥
[अथ (atha) - then; आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; तं (taṃ) - that; देशं (deśaṃ) - place; केसरी (kesarī) - Kesarī; केसरारुणः (kesarāruṇaḥ) - tawny-maned; गिरिकन्दरजः (girikandarajaḥ) - born in a mountain cave; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - formidable; सिंहः (siṃhaḥ) - lion; नागकुलान्तकः (nāgakulāntakaḥ) - destroyer of the serpent race;]
(Then came to that place Kesarī, tawny-maned, born in a mountain cave, formidable, a lion, destroyer of the serpent race.)
Then Kesarī, the tawny-maned lion born in a mountain cave, formidable and the destroyer of the serpent race, came to that place.
तं दृष्ट्वा सिंहमायान्तं नागः सिंहभयाकुलः। ऋषिं शरणमापेदे वेपमानो भयातुरः ॥१२-११७-२९॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā siṃham āyāntaṃ nāgaḥ siṃha-bhayākulaḥ। ṛṣiṃ śaraṇam āpede vepamāno bhayāturaḥ॥12-117-29॥

(Having seen the lion approaching, the serpent, distressed by fear of the lion, trembling and overcome by fear, sought refuge with the sage.)
Seeing the lion coming near, the serpent, terrified and trembling with fear, sought refuge with the sage.
ततः स सिंहतां नीतो नागेन्द्रो मुनिना तदा। वन्यं नागणयत्सिंहं तुल्यजातिसमन्वयात् ॥१२-११७-३०॥
tataḥ sa siṃhatāṃ nīto nāgendro muninā tadā। vanyaṃ nāgaṇayat siṃhaṃ tulyajātisamanvayāt ॥12-117-30॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; सिंहताम् (siṃhatām) - state of a lion; नीतः (nītaḥ) - led; नागेन्द्रः (nāgendraḥ) - king of serpents; मुनिना (muninā) - by the sage; तदा (tadā) - at that time; वन्यम् (vanyam) - wild; नागणयत् (nāgaṇayat) - did not consider; सिंहम् (siṃham) - lion; तुल्यजातिसमन्वयात् (tulyajātisamanvayāt) - due to similarity of species and connection;]
(Then he, the king of serpents, was led to the state of a lion by the sage at that time. The wild lion was not considered (different) due to similarity of species and connection.)
Then, at that time, the sage transformed the king of serpents into a lion. The wild lion was not distinguished because of the similarity in species and association.
दृष्ट्वा च सोऽनशत्सिंहो वन्यो भीसन्नवाग्बलः। स चाश्रमेऽवसत्सिंहस्तस्मिन्नेव वने सुखी ॥१२-११७-३१॥
dṛṣṭvā ca so'naśatsiṃho vanyo bhīsannavāgbalaḥ। sa cāśrame'vasatsiṃhastasminneva vane sukhī ॥12-117-31॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; अनशत् (anaśat) - did not eat; सिंहः (siṃhaḥ) - lion; वन्यः (vanyaḥ) - wild; भीसन्न (bhīsanna) - frightened; वाक् (vāk) - speech; बलः (balaḥ) - strength; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; आश्रम (āśrama) - hermitage; अवसत् (avasat) - dwelt; सिंहः (siṃhaḥ) - lion; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; एव (eva) - only; वने (vane) - forest; सुखी (sukhī) - happy;]
(Having seen, and he (the) lion did not eat, wild, frightened, speech, strength. He also in the hermitage dwelt, (the) lion, in that very forest, happy.)
Having seen this, the wild lion, frightened and speechless, did not eat. That lion also dwelt happily in that very forest hermitage.
न त्वन्ये क्षुद्रपशवस्तपोवननिवासिनः। व्यदृश्यन्त भयत्रस्ता जीविताकाङ्क्षिणः सदा ॥१२-११७-३२॥
na tv anye kṣudrapaśavas tapovana-nivāsinaḥ। vyadṛśyanta bhayatrastā jīvitākāṅkṣiṇaḥ sadā ॥12-117-32॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; अन्ये (anye) - others; क्षुद्रपशवः (kṣudrapaśavaḥ) - small animals; तपोवननिवासिनः (tapovana-nivāsinaḥ) - residing in the forest of austerities; व्यदृश्यन्त (vyadṛśyanta) - were seen; भयत्रस्ताः (bhayatrastāḥ) - afflicted by fear; जीविताकाङ्क्षिणः (jīvitākāṅkṣiṇaḥ) - desiring life; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(But not others, the small animals residing in the forest of austerities; were seen always afflicted by fear, desiring life.)
But the other small animals living in the forest of austerities were always seen, stricken by fear and longing for life.
कदाचित्कालयोगेन सर्वप्राणिविहिंसकः। बलवान्क्षतजाहारो नानासत्त्वभयङ्करः ॥१२-११७-३३॥
kadācit kālayogena sarvaprāṇivihiṃsakaḥ। balavān kṣatajāhāro nānāsattvabhayaṅkaraḥ ॥12-117-33॥
[कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; कालयोगेन (kālayogena) - by the conjunction of time; सर्वप्राणिविहिंसकः (sarvaprāṇivihiṃsakaḥ) - destroyer of all living beings; बलवान् (balavān) - powerful; क्षतजाहारः (kṣatajāhāraḥ) - eater of blood; नानासत्त्वभयङ्करः (nānāsattvabhayaṅkaraḥ) - terrifying to various beings;]
(At some time, by the conjunction of time, (he became) a destroyer of all living beings, powerful, eater of blood, terrifying to various beings.)
At a certain time, due to the influence of time, he became a powerful destroyer of all living beings, a blood-eater, and a terror to many creatures.
अष्टपादूर्ध्वचरणः शरभो वनगोचरः। तं सिंहं हन्तुमागच्छन्मुनेस्तस्य निवेशनम् ॥१२-११७-३४॥
aṣṭapādūrdhvacaraṇaḥ śarabho vanagocaraḥ। taṃ siṃhaṃ hantumāgacchanmunestasya niveśanam ॥12-117-34॥
[अष्टपाद् (aṣṭapād) - eight-footed; ऊर्ध्वचरणः (ūrdhvacaraṇaḥ) - with upward feet; शरभः (śarabhaḥ) - śarabha (a mythical animal); वनगोचरः (vanagocaraḥ) - forest-dweller; तं (taṃ) - him; सिंहं (siṃham) - lion; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to kill; आगच्छन् (āgacchan) - coming; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage; तस्य (tasya) - his; निवेशनम् (niveśanam) - dwelling;]
(The eight-footed, upward-footed śarabha, a forest-dweller, came to the dwelling of the sage to kill that lion.)
The eight-footed, upward-footed śarabha, a forest-dwelling beast, came to the sage's dwelling to kill the lion.
तं मुनिः शरभं चक्रे बलोत्कटमरिंदम। ततः स शरभो वन्यो मुनेः शरभमग्रतः ॥ दृष्ट्वा बलिनमत्युग्रं द्रुतं सम्प्राद्रवद्भयात् ॥१२-११७-३५॥
taṃ muniḥ śarabhaṃ cakre balotkaṭamariṃdama। tataḥ sa śarabho vanyo muneḥ śarabhamagrataḥ ॥ dṛṣṭvā balinamatyugraṃ drutaṃ samprādravadbhayāt ॥12-117-35॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; शरभं (śarabham) - Śarabha (mythical beast); चक्रे (cakre) - made; बलोत्कटम् (balotkaṭam) - very powerful; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - destroyer of enemies; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; शरभः (śarabhaḥ) - Śarabha; वन्यः (vanyaḥ) - wild; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage; शरभम् (śarabham) - Śarabha; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; बलिनम् (balinam) - powerful; अत्युग्रं (atyugram) - very fierce; द्रुतं (drutam) - quickly; सम्प्राद्रवत् (samprādravat) - ran away; भयात् (bhayāt) - out of fear;]
(The sage made him into a Śarabha, very powerful, destroyer of enemies. Then that wild Śarabha stood in front of the sage's Śarabha. Having seen the very powerful, very fierce one, he quickly ran away out of fear.)
The sage transformed him into a Śarabha, a mighty destroyer of enemies. Then that wild Śarabha stood before the sage's Śarabha. Seeing the extremely powerful and fierce being, he quickly fled in fear.
स एवं शरभस्थाने न्यस्तो वै मुनिना तदा। मुनेः पार्श्वगतो नित्यं शारभ्यं सुखमाप्तवान् ॥१२-११७-३६॥
sa evaṃ śarabhasthāne nyasto vai muninā tadā। muneḥ pārśvagato nityaṃ śārabhyaṃ sukhamāptavān ॥12-117-36॥
[स (sa) - he; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; शरभस्थाने (śarabhasthāne) - in the place of Śarabha; न्यस्तः (nyastaḥ) - placed; वै (vai) - indeed; मुनिना (muninā) - by the sage; तदा (tadā) - then; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage; पार्श्वगतः (pārśvagataḥ) - gone to the side; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; शारभ्यं (śārabhyaṃ) - of Śarabha; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; आप्तवान् (āptavān) - obtained;]
(He thus, in the place of Śarabha, was indeed placed by the sage then; always at the side of the sage, he obtained the happiness of Śarabha.)
Thus, he was placed by the sage in the position of Śarabha; always remaining at the sage's side, he attained the happiness belonging to Śarabha.
ततः शरभसन्त्रस्ताः सर्वे मृगगणा वनात्। दिशः सम्प्राद्रवन्राजन्भयाज्जीवितकाङ्क्षिणः ॥१२-११७-३७॥
tataḥ śarabha-santrastāḥ sarve mṛga-gaṇā vanāt। diśaḥ samprādravan rājan bhayāt jīvitakāṅkṣiṇaḥ॥12-117-37॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शरभसन्त्रस्ताः (śarabha-santrastāḥ) - terrified by the śarabha; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मृगगणाः (mṛga-gaṇāḥ) - groups of deer; वनात् (vanāt) - from the forest; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सम्प्राद्रवन् (samprādravan) - ran away; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भयात् (bhayāt) - out of fear; जीवितकाङ्क्षिणः (jīvitakāṅkṣiṇaḥ) - desiring life;]
(Then, all the groups of deer, terrified by the śarabha, from the forest, in all directions, ran away, O king, out of fear, desiring life.)
Then, O king, all the groups of deer, terrified by the śarabha, fled from the forest in all directions, seeking to save their lives out of fear.
शरभोऽप्यतिसंदुष्टो नित्यं प्राणिवधे रतः। फलमूलाशनं शान्तं नैच्छत्स पिशिताशनः ॥१२-११७-३८॥
śarabho'pyatisanduṣṭo nityaṃ prāṇivadhe rataḥ। phalamūlāśanaṃ śāntaṃ naicchatsa piśitāśanaḥ ॥12-117-38॥
[शरभः (śarabhaḥ) - the deer; अपि (api) - also; अति-संदुष्टः (ati-sanduṣṭaḥ) - very much enraged; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; प्राणि-वधे (prāṇi-vadhe) - in killing living beings; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; फल-मूल-आशनं (phala-mūla-āśanam) - eating fruits and roots; शान्तं (śāntam) - calm; न (na) - not; ऐच्छत् (aicchat) - desired; सः (saḥ) - he; पिशित-आशनः (piśita-āśanaḥ) - flesh-eater;]
(The deer also, being very much enraged, always engaged in killing living beings; he, the flesh-eater, did not desire calmness or eating fruits and roots.)
The deer, too, being extremely enraged, was always intent on killing living beings; he, as a flesh-eater, did not wish for calmness or to eat fruits and roots.
ततो रुधिरतर्षेण बलिना शरभोऽन्वितः। इयेष तं मुनिं हन्तुमकृतज्ञः श्वयोनिजः ॥१२-११७-३९॥
tato rudhiratarṣeṇa balinā śarabho'nvitaḥ। iyeṣa taṃ muniṃ hantum akṛtajñaḥ śvayonijaḥ॥12-117-39॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; रुधिरतर्षेण (rudhiratarṣeṇa) - with blood-thirst; बलिना (balinā) - by the strong one; शरभः (śarabhaḥ) - Śarabha (the beast); अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - accompanied; इयेष (iyeṣa) - desired; तम् (tam) - him; मुनिम् (munim) - sage; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to kill; अकृतज्ञः (akṛtajñaḥ) - ungrateful; श्वयोनिजः (śvayonijaḥ) - born of a canine womb;]
(Then, with blood-thirst, accompanied by the strong one, Śarabha desired to kill that sage, the ungrateful one born of a canine womb.)
Then, driven by blood-thirst and accompanied by the powerful Śarabha, the ungrateful one born of a canine womb sought to kill the sage.
ततस्तेन तपःशक्त्या विदितो ज्ञानचक्षुषा। विज्ञाय च महाप्राज्ञो मुनिः श्वानं तमुक्तवान् ॥१२-११७-४०॥
tatastena tapaḥśaktyā vidito jñānacakṣuṣā। vijñāya ca mahāprājño muniḥ śvānaṃ tamuktavān ॥12-117-40॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तेन (tena) - by him; तपःशक्त्या (tapaḥśaktyā) - by the power of austerity; विदितः (viditaḥ) - known; ज्ञानचक्षुषा (jñānacakṣuṣā) - by the eye of knowledge; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having understood; च (ca) - and; महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - the great wise one; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; श्वानम् (śvānam) - the dog; तम् (tam) - him; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - said;]
(Then, by him, by the power of austerity, known by the eye of knowledge, having understood, and the great wise one, the sage, the dog, him, said.)
Then, by the power of his austerity and with the eye of knowledge, the great wise sage understood and spoke to the dog.
श्वा त्वं द्वीपित्वमापन्नो द्वीपी व्याघ्रत्वमागतः। व्याघ्रो नागो मदपटुर्नागः सिंहत्वमाप्तवान् ॥१२-११७-४१॥
śvā tvaṃ dvīpitvam-āpanno dvīpī vyāghratvam-āgataḥ। vyāghro nāgo mada-paṭur-nāgaḥ siṃhatvam-āptavān ॥12-117-41॥

(Dog you leopard-ness attained, leopard tiger-ness attained. Tiger elephant intoxicated and strong, elephant lion-ness attained.)
You, the dog, attained the nature of a leopard; the leopard attained the nature of a tiger. The tiger became an intoxicated and strong elephant; the elephant attained the nature of a lion.
सिंहोऽतिबलसंयुक्तो भूयः शरभतां गतः। मया स्नेहपरीतेन न विमृष्टः कुलान्वयः ॥१२-११७-४२॥
siṃho'tibalasamyukto bhūyaḥ śarabhatāṃ gataḥ। mayā snehaparītena na vimṛṣṭaḥ kulānvayaḥ ॥12-117-42॥
[सिंहः (siṃhaḥ) - lion; अतिबलसंयुक्तः (atibalasamyuktaḥ) - endowed with great strength; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; शरभताम् (śarabhatām) - the state of a śarabha (mythical beast); गतः (gataḥ) - gone (has become); मया (mayā) - by me; स्नेहपरीतेन (snehaparītena) - overpowered by affection; न (na) - not; विमृष्टः (vimṛṣṭaḥ) - examined; कुलान्वयः (kulānvayaḥ) - family lineage;]
(The lion, endowed with great strength, again became a śarabha. By me, overpowered by affection, the family lineage was not examined.)
The lion, though greatly powerful, again turned into a śarabha. Because I was overwhelmed by affection, I did not examine the family lineage.
यस्मादेवमपापं मां पाप हिंसितुमिच्छसि। तस्मात्स्वयोनिमापन्नः श्वैव त्वं हि भविष्यसि ॥१२-११७-४३॥
yasmādevaṁ apāpaṁ māṁ pāpa hiṁsitum icchasi। tasmāt svayonim āpannaḥ śvaiva tvaṁ hi bhaviṣyasi ॥12-117-43॥

(Because thus, sinless me, to harm, you wish. Therefore, your own birth having attained, a dog indeed you will become.)
Because you wish to harm me, who am sinless, therefore, having attained your own species, you will indeed become a dog.
ततो मुनिजनद्वेषाद्दुष्टात्मा श्वाकृतोऽबुधः। ऋषिणा शरभः शप्तः स्वं रूपं पुनराप्तवान् ॥१२-११७-४४॥
tato munijanadveṣād duṣṭātmā śvākṛto'budhaḥ। ṛṣiṇā śarabhaḥ śaptaḥ svaṃ rūpaṃ punar āptavān॥ 12-117-44॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मुनिजनद्वेषात् (munijanadveṣāt) - from hatred towards sages; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - wicked-souled; श्वाकृतः (śvākṛtaḥ) - made into a dog; अबुधः (abudhaḥ) - ignorant; ऋषिणा (ṛṣiṇā) - by the sage; शरभः (śarabhaḥ) - Śarabha; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; स्वम् (svam) - his own; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आप्तवान् (āptavān) - obtained;]
(Then, from hatred towards sages, the wicked-souled, ignorant (one), made into a dog, Śarabha, cursed by the sage, again obtained his own form.)
Then, due to his hatred of the sages, the wicked and ignorant Śarabha, who had been turned into a dog and cursed by the sage, regained his original form.
