तस्यां निशायां व्युष्टायां गते तस्मिन्द्विजोत्तमे। निष्क्रम्य गौतमोऽगच्छत्समुद्रं प्रति भारत ॥१२-१६३-१॥
tasyāṃ niśāyāṃ vyuṣṭāyāṃ gate tasmin dvijottame। niṣkramya gautamo'gacchatsamudraṃ prati bhārata ॥12-163-1॥

सामुद्रकान्स वणिजस्ततोऽपश्यत्स्थितान्पथि। स तेन सार्थेन सह प्रययौ सागरं प्रति ॥१२-१६३-२॥
sāmudrakān sa vaṇijas tato'paśyat sthitān pathi। sa tena sārthena saha prayayau sāgaraṃ prati ॥12-163-2॥

स तु सार्थो महाराज कस्मिंश्चिद्गिरिगह्वरे। मत्तेन द्विरदेनाथ निहतः प्रायशोऽभवत् ॥१२-१६३-३॥
sa tu sārtho mahārāja kasmiṃścid girigahvare। mattena dviradenātha nihataḥ prāyaśo'bhavat ॥12-163-3॥

(He but the caravan, O great king, in some mountain-cave, by a maddened elephant then killed, mostly became.)

स कथञ्चित्ततस्तस्मात्सार्थान्मुक्तो द्विजस्तदा। कांदिग्भूतो जीवितार्थी प्रदुद्रावोत्तरां दिशम् ॥१२-१६३-४॥

(He, somehow, from there, from that, from the caravans, released, the twice-born, then, become fearful, seeking life, ran away towards the northern direction.)
Somehow, the brāhmaṇa, having been released from the caravans, then, fearful and seeking to save his life, ran away towards the northern direction.
स सर्वतः परिभ्रष्टः सार्थाद्देशात्तथार्थतः। एकाकी व्यद्रवत्तत्र वने किम्पुरुषो यथा ॥१२-१६३-५॥
saḥ sarvataḥ paribhraṣṭaḥ sārthāt deśāt tathā arthataḥ। ekākī vyadravat tatra vane kimpuruṣaḥ yathā ॥12-163-5॥

(He, cast away from all sides, from the caravan, from the country, thus in respect to purpose, alone ran away there in the forest as a Kimpurusha.)
He, having been cast out from all sides—his caravan, his country, and his purpose—ran alone into the forest, like a Kimpurusha.
स पन्थानमथासाद्य समुद्राभिसरं तदा। आससाद वनं रम्यं महत्पुष्पितपादपम् ॥१२-१६३-६॥
sa panthānam athāsādya samudrābhisaraṃ tadā। āsasāda vanaṃ ramyaṃ mahat puṣpitapādapam ॥12-163-6॥

He then, having reached the path leading to the ocean, came upon a beautiful great forest filled with flowering trees.
सर्वर्तुकैराम्रवनैः पुष्पितैरुपशोभितम्। नन्दनोद्देशसदृशं यक्षकिंनरसेवितम् ॥१२-१६३-७॥
sarvartukair āmravanaiḥ puṣpitair upaśobhitam। nandanoddeśasadṛśaṃ yakṣakiṃnarasevitam ॥12-163-7॥

शालतालधवाश्वत्थत्वचागुरुवनैस्तथा। चन्दनस्य च मुख्यस्य पादपैरुपशोभितम् ॥ गिरिप्रस्थेषु रम्येषु शुभेषु सुसुगन्धिषु ॥१२-१६३-८॥
śālatāla-dhava-aśvattha-tvac-āguru-vanaiḥ tathā। candanasya ca mukhyasya pādapaiḥ upaśobhitam ॥ giriprasthyeṣu ramyeṣu śubheṣu susugandhiṣu ॥12-163-8॥

The mountain slopes, charming and auspicious, were adorned with groves of śāla, palmyra, dhava, aśvattha, aloeswood bark, and especially sandalwood trees, filling the air with fragrance.
समन्ततो द्विजश्रेष्ठा वल्गु कूजन्ति तत्र वै। मनुष्यवदनास्त्वन्ये भारुण्डा इति विश्रुताः ॥ भूलिङ्गशकुनाश्चान्ये समुद्रं सर्वतोऽभवन् ॥१२-१६३-९॥
samantato dvijaśreṣṭhā valgu kūjanti tatra vai। manuṣyavadanāstvanye bhāruṇḍā iti viśrutāḥ ॥ bhūliṅgaśakunāścānye samudraṃ sarvato'bhavan ॥12-163-9॥

(On all sides, the best of twice-born (birds) sweetly sing there indeed. Human-faced others, Bharunda birds, thus well-known. Bhulingashakuna birds and others became the ocean from all sides. 12-163-9.)
All around, the best of birds sweetly sang there. Some others, known as Bharunda birds with human faces, were famous. Other Bhulingashakuna birds and others became the ocean from all sides.
स तान्यतिमनोज्ञानि विहङ्गाभिरुतानि वै। शृण्वन्सुरमणीयानि विप्रोऽगच्छत गौतमः ॥१२-१६३-१०॥
sa tāny atimanojñāni vihaṅgābhirutāni vai। śṛṇvan suramaṇīyāni vipro'gacchata gautamaḥ ॥12-163-10॥

(He, those exceedingly-pleasing-to-the-mind, by-birds-sung indeed, hearing divinely-charming, the sage went, Gautama.)

ततोऽपश्यत्सुरम्ये स सुवर्णसिकताचिते। देशभागे समे चित्रे स्वर्गोद्देशसमप्रभे ॥१२-१६३-११॥
tato'paśyatsurāmye sa suvarṇasikatācite। deśabhāge same citre svargoddeśasamaprabhe ॥12-163-11॥

(Then he saw, in a beautiful place, heaped with golden sand, in a region, level, wonderful, with splendour equal to the region of heaven.)

तत्रासीनस्य कौरव्य गौतमस्य सुखः शिवः। पुष्पाणि समुपस्पृश्य प्रववावनिलः शुचिः ॥ ह्लादयन्सर्वगात्राणि गौतमस्य तदा नृप ॥१२-१६३-१५॥

(There, for the one seated, O Kauravya, of Gautama, happiness, auspicious. Flowers having touched, the pure wind blew. Delighting all the limbs of Gautama then, O king.)

स तु विप्रः परिश्रान्तः स्पृष्टः पुण्येन वायुना। सुखमासाद्य सुष्वाप भास्करश्चास्तमभ्यगात् ॥१२-१६३-१६॥

[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - brāhmaṇa; परिश्रान्तः (pariśrāntaḥ) - completely fatigued; स्पृष्टः (spṛṣṭaḥ) - touched; पुण्येन (puṇyena) - by meritorious; वायुना (vāyunā) - by wind; सुखम् (sukham) - comfort; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having attained; सुष्वाप (suṣvāpa) - slept well; भास्करः (bhāskaraḥ) - the sun; च (ca) - and; अस्तम् (astam) - to setting; अभ्यगात् (abhyagāt) - approached;]
(He but the brāhmaṇa completely fatigued touched by meritorious wind comfort having attained slept well the sun and to setting approached.)
But the brāhmaṇa, completely exhausted, touched by the auspicious wind, found comfort and slept well, and the sun set.
ततोऽस्तं भास्करे याते सन्ध्याकाल उपस्थिते। आजगाम स्वभवनं ब्रह्मलोकात्खगोत्तमः ॥१२-१६३-१७॥
tato'staṃ bhāskare yāte sandhyākāla upasthite। ājagāma svabhavanaṃ brahmalokātkhagottamaḥ ॥12-163-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्तं (astaṃ) - to setting; भास्करे (bhāskare) - the sun; याते (yāte) - having gone; सन्ध्याकाल (sandhyākāla) - twilight time; उपस्थिते (upasthite) - having arrived; आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; स्वभवनं (svabhavanaṃ) - to his own abode; ब्रह्मलोकात् (brahmalokāt) - from Brahmaloka; खगोत्तमः (khagottamaḥ) - the best of birds;]
(Then, when the sun had set and twilight had arrived, the best of birds came to his own abode from Brahmaloka.)
Then, as the sun set and twilight approached, the best of birds returned from Brahmaloka to his own home.
नाडीजङ्घ इति ख्यातो दयितो ब्रह्मणः सखा। बकराजो महाप्राज्ञः कश्यपस्यात्मसम्भवः ॥१२-१६३-१८॥

मृष्टहाटकसञ्छन्नो भूषणैरर्कसंनिभैः। भूषितः सर्वगात्रेषु देवगर्भः श्रिया ज्वलन् ॥१२-१६३-२०॥
mṛṣṭahāṭakasañchanno bhūṣaṇair arkasaṃnibhaiḥ। bhūṣitaḥ sarvagātreṣu devagarbhaḥ śriyā jvalan ॥12-163-20॥

Covered with polished gold and adorned with ornaments shining like the sun, the divine-born one was resplendent with splendor on all his limbs.
तमागतं द्विजं दृष्ट्वा विस्मितो गौतमोऽभवत्। क्षुत्पिपासापरीतात्मा हिंसार्थी चाप्यवैक्षत ॥१२-१६३-२१॥
tam-āgatam dvijaṃ dṛṣṭvā vismito gautamo'bhavat | kṣut-pipāsā-parītātmā hiṃsārthī cāpyavaikṣata ॥12-163-21॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आगतं (āgatam) - arrived; द्विजं (dvijaṃ) - twice-born (brāhmaṇa); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; विस्मितः (vismitaḥ) - astonished; गौतमः (gautamaḥ) - Gautama; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; क्षुत् (kṣut) - hunger; पिपासा (pipāsā) - thirst; परीतात्मा (parītātmā) - afflicted in self; हिंसा-अर्थी (hiṃsārthī) - seeking violence; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अवैक्षत (avaikṣata) - he looked;]
(Having seen him, the twice-born who had arrived, Gautama became astonished; afflicted in self by hunger and thirst, and also seeking violence, he looked.)
When Gautama saw the arriving brāhmaṇa, he was astonished; afflicted by hunger and thirst, and also intent on violence, he looked on.
राजधर्मोवाच॥

The kingly duty spoke.
स्वागतं भवते विप्र दिष्ट्या प्राप्तोऽसि मे गृहम्। अस्तं च सविता यातः सन्ध्येयं समुपस्थिता ॥१२-१६३-२२॥
svāgataṃ bhavate vipra diṣṭyā prāpto'si me gṛham। astaṃ ca savitā yātaḥ sandhyeyaṃ samupasthitā ॥12-163-22॥
[स्वागतं (svāgatam) - welcome; भवते (bhavate) - to you; विप्र (vipra) - brāhmaṇa; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - arrived; असि (asi) - you are; मे (me) - my; गृहम् (gṛham) - house; अस्तं (astaṃ) - to setting; च (ca) - and; सविता (savitā) - the Sun; यातः (yātaḥ) - has gone; सन्ध्या (sandhyā) - twilight; इयं (iyaṃ) - this; समुपस्थिता (samupasthitā) - has arrived;]
(Welcome to you, brāhmaṇa, by fortune you have arrived at my house. The Sun has gone to setting and this twilight has arrived.)
Welcome, O brāhmaṇa! By good fortune you have come to my house. The Sun has set and twilight has now arrived.
मम त्वं निलयं प्राप्तः प्रियातिथिरनिन्दितः। पूजितो यास्यसि प्रातर्विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥१२-१६३-२३॥
mama tvaṃ nilayaṃ prāptaḥ priyātithiraninditaḥ। pūjito yāsyasi prātarvidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā ॥12-163-23॥
[मम (mama) - of me; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; निलयं (nilayaṃ) - abode; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - arrived; प्रिय (priya) - dear; अतिथि (atithi) - guest; अनिन्दितः (aninditaḥ) - blameless; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored; यास्यसि (yāsyasi) - you will go; प्रातर् (prātar) - in the morning; विधि (vidhi) - by rule; दृष्टेन (dṛṣṭena) - as prescribed; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by act;]
(You, having arrived at my abode as a dear, blameless guest, having been honored, will depart in the morning by the act as prescribed by rule.)
