भोः कश्यपस्य पुत्रोऽहं माता दाक्षायणी च मे। अतिथिस्त्वं गुणोपेतः स्वागतं ते द्विजर्षभ ॥१२-१६४-२॥

तस्मै दत्त्वा स सत्कारं विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा। शालपुष्पमयीं दिव्यां बृसीं समुपकल्पयत् ॥१२-१६४-३॥
tasmai dattvā sa satkāraṃ vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā। śālapuṣpamayīṃ divyāṃ bṛsīṃ samupakalpayat ॥12-164-3॥

भगीरथरथाक्रान्तान्देशान्गङ्गानिषेवितान्। ये चरन्ति महामीनास्तांश्च तस्यान्वकल्पयत् ॥१२-१६४-४॥

(The lands overrun by Bhagīratha's chariot, frequented by Gaṅgā, where great fishes move—he imagined those as his.)

वह्निं चापि सुसंदीप्तं मीनांश्चैव सुपीवरान्। स गौतमायातिथये न्यवेदयत काश्यपः ॥१२-१६४-५॥

भुक्तवन्तं च तं विप्रं प्रीतात्मानं महामनाः। क्लमापनयनार्थं स पक्षाभ्यामभ्यवीजयत् ॥१२-१६४-६॥
bhuktavantaṃ ca taṃ vipraṃ prītātmānaṃ mahāmanāḥ। klamāpanayanārthaṃ sa pakṣābhyām abhyavījayat ॥12-164-6॥

(Having eaten, and that brāhmaṇa, with a pleased mind, the great-minded (one), for the purpose of removing fatigue, he fanned with (his) wings.)
After the brāhmaṇa had eaten, the great-minded one, pleased at heart, fanned him with his wings to relieve his fatigue.
ततो विश्रान्तमासीनं गोत्रप्रश्नमपृच्छत। सोऽब्रवीद्गौतमोऽस्मीति ब्राह्म नान्यदुदाहरत् ॥१२-१६४-७॥
tato viśrāntam-āsīnaṃ gotrapraśnam-apṛcchata। so'bravīd gautamo'smīti brāhma nānyad-udāharat ॥12-164-7॥

(Then, having rested and seated, (he) asked the question about lineage. He said, "I am Gautama," O Brāhmaṇa, and did not utter anything else.)
Then, after resting and sitting down, he asked about the lineage. He replied, "I am Gautama," O Brāhmaṇa, and said nothing further.
तस्मै पर्णमयं दिव्यं दिव्यपुष्पाधिवासितम्। गन्धाढ्यं शयनं प्रादात्स शिश्ये तत्र वै सुखम् ॥१२-१६४-८॥
tasmai parṇamayaṃ divyaṃ divyapuṣpādhivāsitam। gandhāḍhyaṃ śayanaṃ prādāt sa śiśye tatra vai sukham ॥12-164-8॥

अथोपविष्टं शयने गौतमं बकराट्तदा। पप्रच्छ काश्यपो वाग्मी किमागमनकारणम् ॥१२-१६४-९॥
athopaviṣṭaṃ śayane gautamaṃ bakarāṭ tadā। papraccha kāśyapo vāgmī kim āgamana-kāraṇam ॥12-164-9॥

(Then, at that time, the king of cranes, eloquent Kashyapa, asked Gautama, who was seated on the bed, "What is the reason for your coming?")
Then, eloquent Kashyapa, the king of cranes, saw Gautama seated on the bed and asked, "What brings you here?"
ततोऽब्रवीद्गौतमस्तं दरिद्रोऽहं महामते। समुद्रगमनाकाङ्क्षी द्रव्यार्थमिति भारत ॥१२-१६४-१०॥
tato'bravīdgautamastaṃ daridro'haṃ mahāmate। samudragamanākāṅkṣī dravyārthamiti bhārata ॥12-164-10॥

(Then Gautama said to him: "I am poor, O great-minded one, desiring to go to the ocean for the sake of wealth," thus, O Bhārata.)
Then Gautama said to him, "O great-minded one, I am poor and wish to go to the ocean to seek wealth," O Bhārata.
तं काश्यपोऽब्रवीत्प्रीतो नोत्कण्ठां कर्तुमर्हसि। कृतकार्यो द्विजश्रेष्ठ सद्रव्यो यास्यसे गृहान् ॥१२-१६४-११॥
taṃ kāśyapo'bravītprīto notkaṇṭhāṃ kartumarhasi। kṛtakāryo dvijaśreṣṭha sadravyo yāsyase gṛhān ॥12-164-11॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; काश्यपः (kāśyapaḥ) - Kashyapa; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; न (na) - not; उत्कण्ठाम् (utkaṇṭhām) - longing; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; कृतकार्यः (kṛtakāryaḥ) - one whose task is done; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśreṣṭha) - O best of twice-born; सद्रव्यः (sadravyaḥ) - with wealth; यास्यसे (yāsyase) - you will go; गृहान् (gṛhān) - to homes;]
(Him Kashyapa, pleased, said: "You ought not to feel longing. O best of twice-born, your task is done, with wealth you will go to your homes.")
Kashyapa, pleased, said to him: "Do not feel longing. O best of the twice-born, your task is accomplished; you will return home with wealth."
चतुर्विधा ह्यर्थगतिर्बृहस्पतिमतं यथा। पारम्पर्यं तथा दैवं कर्म मित्रमिति प्रभो ॥१२-१६४-१२॥
caturvidhā hy arthagatir bṛhaspatimataṃ yathā। pāramparyaṃ tathā daivaṃ karma mitram iti prabho ॥12-164-12॥
[चतुर्विधा (caturvidhā) - fourfold; हि (hi) - indeed; अर्थगतिः (arthagatiḥ) - means of attaining an object; बृहस्पतिमतं (bṛhaspatimatam) - according to the doctrine of Bṛhaspati; यथा (yathā) - as; पारम्पर्यं (pāramparyaṃ) - tradition; तथा (tathā) - so; दैवम् (daivam) - fate; कर्म (karma) - action; मित्रम् (mitram) - friend; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Fourfold indeed is the means of attaining an object, as per the doctrine of Bṛhaspati: tradition, fate, action, friend—thus, O lord.)
O lord, according to the doctrine of Bṛhaspati, there are four means of attaining an object: tradition, fate, action, and friendship.
प्रादुर्भूतोऽस्मि ते मित्रं सुहृत्त्वं च मम त्वयि। सोऽहं तथा यतिष्यामि भविष्यसि यथार्थवान् ॥१२-१६४-१३॥
prādurbhūto'smi te mitraṃ suhṛttvaṃ ca mama tvayi. so'haṃ tathā yatiṣyāmi bhaviṣyasi yathārthavān ॥12-164-13॥
[प्रादुर्भूतः (prādurbhūtaḥ) - manifested; appeared; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; ते (te) - to you; मित्रम् (mitram) - friend; सुहृत्त्वं (suhṛttvam) - friendship; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; सः (saḥ) - that (I); अहम् (aham) - I; तथा (tathā) - thus; यतिष्यामि (yatiṣyāmi) - I shall strive; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become; यथार्थवान् (yathārthavān) - truthful; real; ॥१२-१६४-१३॥ (॥12-164-13॥) -;]
(Manifested I am to you, friend, and friendship of mine in you. That I, thus, shall strive; you will become truthful.)
I have appeared to you as a friend, and my friendship is with you. Therefore, I shall act in such a way that you will become a person of truth.
ततः प्रभातसमये सुखं पृष्ट्वाब्रवीदिदम्। गच्छ सौम्य पथानेन कृतकृत्यो भविष्यसि ॥१२-१६४-१४॥
tataḥ prabhātasamaye sukhaṃ pṛṣṭvābravīdidam। gaccha saumya pathānena kṛtakṛtyo bhaviṣyasi ॥12-164-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रभातसमये (prabhātasamaye) - at the time of dawn; सुखं (sukham) - comfortably; पृष्ट्वा (pṛṣṭvā) - having asked; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; सौम्य (saumya) - gentle one; पथा (pathā) - by the path; एनेन (anena) - by this; कृतकृत्यः (kṛtakṛtyaḥ) - one who has accomplished his purpose; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become;]
(Then, at the time of dawn, having asked comfortably, (he) said this: "Go, gentle one, by this path; you will become one who has accomplished his purpose.")
Then, at dawn, after asking kindly, he said: "Go, dear one, by this path; you will achieve your purpose."
इतस्त्रियोजनं गत्वा राक्षसाधिपतिर्महान्। विरूपाक्ष इति ख्यातः सखा मम महाबलः ॥१२-१६४-१५॥
itastiryojanaṃ gatvā rākṣasādhipatirmahān। virūpākṣa iti khyātaḥ sakhā mama mahābalaḥ ॥12-164-15॥
[इतः (itaḥ) - from here; त्रियोजनम् (triyojanam) - three yojanas; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; राक्षसाधिपतिः (rākṣasādhipatiḥ) - lord of the rākṣasas; महान् (mahān) - great; विरूपाक्षः (virūpākṣaḥ) - Virūpākṣa; इति (iti) - thus; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - known; सखा (sakhā) - friend; मम (mama) - my; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength;]
(From here, having gone three yojanas, the great lord of the rākṣasas, Virūpākṣa, thus known, my friend of great strength.)
From here, after traveling three yojanas, there is the great lord of the rākṣasas, Virūpākṣa, who is well-known and is my friend of great strength.
तं गच्छ द्विजमुख्य त्वं मम वाक्यप्रचोदितः। कामानभीप्सितांस्तुभ्यं दाता नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥१२-१६४-१६॥
taṃ gaccha dvijamukhya tvaṃ mama vākyapracoditaḥ। kāmān abhīpsitāṃs tubhyaṃ dātā nāsty atra saṃśayaḥ॥12-164-16॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; द्विजमुख्य (dvijamukhya) - O best of the twice-born; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मम (mama) - my; वाक्यप्रचोदितः (vākyapracoditaḥ) - impelled by words; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; अभीप्सितान् (abhīpsitān) - wished for; तुभ्यं (tubhyaṃ) - to you; दाता (dātā) - giver; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Go to him, O best of the twice-born, you, impelled by my words. The giver will grant to you the desired wishes; there is no doubt here.)
Go to him, O foremost of the twice-born, as directed by my words. The giver will surely grant you the wishes you desire; there is no doubt about this.
इत्युक्तः प्रययौ राजन्गौतमो विगतक्लमः। फलान्यमृतकल्पानि भक्षयन्स्म यथेष्टतः ॥१२-१६४-१७॥
ityuktaḥ prayayau rājan gautamo vigataklamaḥ। phalāny amṛtakalpāni bhakṣayan sma yatheṣṭataḥ ॥12-164-17॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गौतमः (gautamaḥ) - Gautama; विगत (vigata) - gone; क्लमः (klamaḥ) - fatigue; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; अमृतकल्पानि (amṛtakalpāni) - like nectar; भक्षयन् (bhakṣayan) - eating; स्म (sma) - indeed; यथेष्टतः (yatheṣṭataḥ) - as he wished;]
(Thus having been spoken, Gautama, O king, departed, his fatigue gone, indeed eating fruits like nectar as he wished.)

चन्दनागुरुमुख्यानि त्वक्पत्राणां वनानि च। तस्मिन्पथि महाराज सेवमानो द्रुतं ययौ ॥१२-१६४-१८॥
candana-aguru-mukhyāni tvak-patrāṇāṃ vanāni ca। tasmin pathi mahārāja sevamānaḥ drutam yayau॥12-164-18॥
[चन्दन (candana) - sandalwood; अगुरु (aguru) - aloeswood; मुख्यानि (mukhyāni) - principal; main; त्वक् (tvak) - bark; पत्राणां (patrāṇāṃ) - of leaves; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; च (ca) - and; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; पथि (pathi) - path; way; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; सेवमानः (sevamānaḥ) - serving; attending; द्रुतं (drutam) - quickly; ययौ (yayau) - went;]
(Sandalwood, aloeswood, principal (forests) of bark and leaves, and forests; in that path, the great king, serving (them), quickly went.)
The great king quickly proceeded along that path, passing through forests of sandalwood, aloeswood, and other principal trees with bark and leaves.
ततो मेरुव्रजं नाम नगरं शैलतोरणम्। शैलप्राकारवप्रं च शैलयन्त्रार्गलं तथा ॥१२-१६४-१९॥
tato meruvrajaṃ nāma nagaraṃ śailatoraṇam। śailaprākāravapraṃ ca śailayantrārgalaṃ tathā ॥12-164-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मेरुव्रजं (meruvrajaṃ) - Meruvraja (name of a place); नाम (nāma) - named; नगरं (nagaraṃ) - city; शैलतोरणम् (śailatoraṇam) - stone-arch; शैलप्राकारवप्रं (śailaprākāravapraṃ) - stone-walled rampart; च (ca) - and; शैलयन्त्रार्गलं (śailayantrārgalaṃ) - stone-mechanical bolt; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Then the city named Meruvraja, with a stone-arch, stone-walled rampart, and likewise a stone-mechanical bolt.)
Then there was the city called Meruvraja, with a stone archway, stone ramparts, and also a stone mechanical bolt.
विदितश्चाभवत्तस्य राक्षसेन्द्रस्य धीमतः। प्रहितः सुहृदा राजन्प्रीयता वै प्रियातिथिः ॥१२-१६४-२०॥
viditaś cābhavat tasya rākṣasendrasya dhīmataḥ। prahitaḥ suhṛdā rājan prīyatā vai priyātithiḥ॥12-164-20॥

(Known and became of him, of the king of rākṣasas, wise; sent by the friend, O king, with affection indeed, dear guest.)
O king, it became known to the wise king of the rākṣasas; the dear guest was sent by his friend with affection indeed.
ततः स राक्षसेन्द्रः स्वान्प्रेष्यानाह युधिष्ठिर। गौतमो नगरद्वाराच्छीघ्रमानीयतामिति ॥१२-१६४-२१॥
tataḥ sa rākṣasendraḥ svān preṣyān āha yudhiṣṭhira। gautamo nagaradvārāc chīghram ānīyatām iti ॥12-164-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; राक्षसेन्द्रः (rākṣasendraḥ) - king of the rākṣasas; स्वान् (svān) - his own; प्रेष्यान् (preṣyān) - messengers; आह (āha) - said; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; गौतमः (gautamaḥ) - Gautama; नगरद्वारात् (nagaradvārāt) - from the city gate; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; आनीयताम् (ānīyatām) - let him be brought; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then he, the king of the rākṣasas, said to his own messengers, "Yudhiṣṭhira, let Gautama be quickly brought from the city gate," thus.)
Then the king of the rākṣasas instructed his messengers, "Yudhiṣṭhira, have Gautama quickly brought from the city gate."
ततः पुरवरात्तस्मात्पुरुषाः श्वेतवेष्टनाः। गौतमेत्यभिभाषन्तः पुरद्वारमुपागमन् ॥१२-१६४-२२॥
tataḥ puravarāttasmātpuruṣāḥ śvetaveṣṭanāḥ। gautametyabhibhāṣantaḥ puradvāramupāgaman ॥12-164-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पुरवरात् (puravarāt) - from the chief city; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; श्वेतवेष्टनाः (śvetaveṣṭanāḥ) - clad in white garments; गौतम (gautama) - O Gautama; इति (iti) - thus; अभिभाषन्तः (abhibhāṣantaḥ) - addressing; पुरद्वारम् (puradvāram) - city gate; उपागमन् (upāgaman) - approached;]
(Then from that chief city, men clad in white garments, addressing (him) as "O Gautama", approached the city gate.)
Then, men dressed in white garments came from the chief city, addressing him as "O Gautama", and approached the city gate.
ते तमूचुर्महाराज प्रेष्या रक्षःपतेर्द्विजम्। त्वरस्व तूर्णमागच्छ राजा त्वां द्रष्टुमिच्छति ॥१२-१६४-२३॥
te tamūcurmahārāja preṣyā rakṣaḥpaterdvijam। tvarasva tūrṇamāgaccha rājā tvāṃ draṣṭumicchati ॥12-164-23॥
[ते (te) - they; तम् (tam) - him; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; प्रेष्याः (preṣyāḥ) - messengers; रक्षःपतेः (rakṣaḥpateḥ) - of the lord of the Rākṣasas; द्विजम् (dvijam) - the Brāhmaṇa; त्वरस्व (tvarasva) - hasten; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; आगच्छ (āgaccha) - come; राजा (rājā) - the king; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इच्छति (icchati) - desires;]
(They said to him, O great king, the messengers of the lord of the Rākṣasas (said) to the Brāhmaṇa: Hasten, come quickly, the king desires to see you.)
The messengers of the lord of the Rākṣasas said to the Brāhmaṇa, "O great king, hurry and come quickly; the king wishes to see you."
राक्षसाधिपतिर्वीरो विरूपाक्ष इति श्रुतः। स त्वां त्वरति वै द्रष्टुं तत्क्षिप्रं संविधीयताम् ॥१२-१६४-२४॥
rākṣasādhipatir vīro virūpākṣa iti śrutaḥ। sa tvāṃ tvarati vai draṣṭuṃ tat kṣipraṃ saṃvidhīyatām॥12-164-24॥
[राक्षस (rākṣasa) - demon; अधिपति (adhipati) - lord; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; विरूपाक्ष (virūpākṣa) - Virūpākṣa; इति (iti) - thus; श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - heard; सः (saḥ) - he; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; त्वरति (tvarati) - hastens; वै (vai) - indeed; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; तत् (tat) - therefore; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; संविधीयताम् (saṃvidhīyatām) - let it be arranged;]
(The demon-lord hero Virūpākṣa, thus heard. He indeed hastens to see you; therefore, let it be quickly arranged.)
The heroic lord of the demons, Virūpākṣa, as he is called, has been mentioned. He is eager to see you; therefore, make arrangements quickly.
ततः स प्राद्रवद्विप्रो विस्मयाद्विगतक्लमः। गौतमो नगरर्द्धिं तां पश्यन्परमविस्मितः ॥१२-१६४-२५॥
tataḥ sa prādravadvipro vismayādvigataklamaḥ। gautamo nagararddhiṃ tāṃ paśyanparamavismitaḥ ॥12-164-25॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; प्राद्रवत् (prādravat) - ran forth; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; विस्मयात् (vismayāt) - from astonishment; विगतक्लमः (vigataklamaḥ) - free from fatigue; गौतमः (gautamaḥ) - Gautama; नगर-अर्द्धिं (nagara-arddhiṃ) - the prosperity of the city; ताम् (tām) - her; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; परमविस्मितः (paramavismitaḥ) - utterly amazed;]
(Then he, the Brāhmaṇa, ran forth, free from fatigue due to astonishment; Gautama, seeing her and the prosperity of the city, was utterly amazed.)
Then the Brāhmaṇa, Gautama, ran forward, his fatigue gone due to astonishment; seeing her and the city's prosperity, he was utterly amazed.
तैरेव सहितो राज्ञो वेश्म तूर्णमुपाद्रवत्। दर्शनं राक्षसेन्द्रस्य काङ्क्षमाणो द्विजस्तदा ॥१२-१६४-२६॥
taireva sahito rājño veśma tūrṇam upādravat। darśanaṃ rākṣasendrasya kāṅkṣamāṇo dvijas tadā ॥12-164-26॥
[तैः एव (taiḥ eva) - with those indeed; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; वेश्म (veśma) - palace; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; उपाद्रवत् (upādravat) - approached; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; राक्षस-इन्द्रस्य (rākṣasa-indrasya) - of the king of the rākṣasas; काङ्क्षमाणः (kāṅkṣamāṇaḥ) - desiring; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(With those indeed, accompanied, of the king, palace, quickly, approached; sight, of the king of the rākṣasas, desiring, the brāhmaṇa, then.)
Then the brāhmaṇa, accompanied by those very ones, quickly approached the king's palace, desiring an audience with the king of the rākṣasas.
