ततः स विदितो राज्ञः प्रविश्य गृहमुत्तमम्। पूजितो राक्षसेन्द्रेण निषसादासनोत्तमे ॥१२-१६५-१॥
tataḥ sa vidito rājñaḥ praviśya gṛham uttamam। pūjito rākṣasendreṇa niṣasādāsanottame ॥12-165-1॥

पृष्टश्च गोत्रचरणं स्वाध्यायं ब्रह्मचारिकम्। न तत्र व्याजहारान्यद्गोत्रमात्रादृते द्विजः ॥१२-१६५-२॥
pṛṣṭaś ca gotracaraṇaṃ svādhyāyaṃ brahmacārikam। na tatra vyājahār anyad gotramātrād ṛte dvijaḥ ॥12-165-2॥

ब्रह्मवर्चसहीनस्य स्वाध्यायविरतस्य च। गोत्रमात्रविदो राजा निवासं समपृच्छत ॥१२-१६५-३॥

ततो राजा विममृशे कथं कार्यमिदं भवेत्। कथं वा सुकृतं मे स्यादिति बुद्ध्यान्वचिन्तयत् ॥१२-१६५-६॥
tato rājā vimamṛśe kathaṃ kāryam idaṃ bhavet। kathaṃ vā sukṛtaṃ me syād iti buddhyā anvacintayat ॥12-165-6॥

अयं वै जननाद्विप्रः सुहृत्तस्य महात्मनः। सम्प्रेषितश्च तेनायं काश्यपेन ममान्तिकम् ॥१२-१६५-७॥
ayaṃ vai jananād vipraḥ suhṛttasya mahātmanaḥ। sampreṣitaś ca tenāyaṃ kāśyapena mamāntikam॥12-165-7॥

This brāhmaṇa, who from birth is the friend of that great-souled one, has been sent by him, by Kāśyapa, to me.
तस्य प्रियं करिष्यामि स हि मामाश्रितः सदा। भ्राता मे बान्धवश्चासौ सखा च हृदयङ्गमः ॥१२-१६५-८॥
tasya priyaṃ kariṣyāmi sa hi māmāśritaḥ sadā। bhrātā me bāndhavaścāsau sakhā ca hṛdayaṅgamaḥ ॥12-165-8॥

कार्त्तिक्यामद्य भोक्तारः सहस्रं मे द्विजोत्तमाः। तत्रायमपि भोक्ता वै देयमस्मै च मे धनम् ॥१२-१६५-९॥
kārttikyām-adya bhoktāraḥ sahasraṃ me dvijottamāḥ। tatrāyam-api bhoktā vai deyam-asmai ca me dhanam ॥12-165-9॥
[कार्त्तिक्याम् (kārttikyām) - in Kārttikā (month); अद्य (adya) - today; भोक्तारः (bhoktāraḥ) - eaters; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; मे (me) - my; द्विजोत्तमाः (dvijottamāḥ) - best of Brāhmaṇas; तत्र (tatra) - there; अयम् (ayam) - this; अपि (api) - also; भोक्ता (bhoktā) - eater; वै (vai) - indeed; देयम् (deyam) - to be given; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth;]
(In Kārttikā, today, the eaters are a thousand, my best of Brāhmaṇas. There, this one also is an eater indeed; to him, too, my wealth is to be given.)
Today, in the month of Kārttikā, a thousand Brāhmaṇas are to be fed by me. There, this person also is to be fed; my wealth should be given to him as well.
ततः सहस्रं विप्राणां विदुषां समलङ्कृतम्। स्नातानामनुसम्प्राप्तमहतक्षौमवाससाम् ॥१२-१६५-१०॥
tataḥ sahasraṃ viprāṇāṃ viduṣāṃ samalaṅkṛtam। snātānāmanusamprāptamahatakṣaumavāsasām ॥12-165-10॥

तानागतान्द्विजश्रेष्ठान्विरूपाक्षो विशां पते। यथार्हं प्रतिजग्राह विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥१२-१६५-११॥

गृह्णीत रत्नान्येतानि यथोत्साहं यथेष्टतः। येषु येषु च भाण्डेषु भुक्तं वो द्विजसत्तमाः ॥ तान्येवादाय गच्छध्वं स्ववेश्मानीति भारत ॥१२-१६५-१९॥

O Bhārata, let the best of the twice-born take these gems as they wish and with whatever zeal they have. From whichever vessels you have eaten, take only those and return to your own homes.
इत्युक्तवचने तस्मिन्राक्षसेन्द्रे महात्मनि। यथेष्टं तानि रत्नानि जगृहुर्ब्राह्मणर्षभाः ॥१२-१६५-२०॥
ity-uktavacane tasmin rākṣasendre mahātmani। yatheṣṭaṃ tāni ratnāni jagṛhur brāhmaṇarṣabhāḥ ॥12-165-20॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तवचने (uktavacane) - having spoken words; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; राक्षसेन्द्रे (rākṣasendre) - in the king of rākṣasas; महात्मनि (mahātmani) - in the great-souled; यथेष्टं (yatheṣṭam) - as desired; तानि (tāni) - those; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - gems; जगृहुः (jagṛhuḥ) - they took; ब्राह्मणर्षभाः (brāhmaṇarṣabhāḥ) - the foremost of brāhmaṇas;]
(Thus, when those words were spoken, in that king of rākṣasas, in the great-souled, as desired, those gems the foremost of brāhmaṇas took.)
When those words were spoken by the great-souled king of the rākṣasas, the foremost of brāhmaṇas took those gems as they wished.
ततो महार्हैस्ते सर्वे रत्नैरभ्यर्चिताः शुभैः। ब्राह्मणा मृष्टवसनाः सुप्रीताः स्म तदाभवन् ॥१२-१६५-२१॥
tato mahārhaiste sarve ratnairabhyarcitāḥ śubhaiḥ। brāhmaṇā mṛṣṭavasanāḥ suprītāḥ sma tadābhavan ॥12-165-21॥

(Then all of them, honored with most precious and auspicious jewels, the Brāhmaṇas, wearing clean garments, became well-pleased at that time indeed.)

ततस्तान्राक्षसेन्द्रश्च द्विजानाह पुनर्वचः। नानादिगागतान्राजन्राक्षसान्प्रतिषिध्य वै ॥१२-१६५-२२॥

(Then the king of the rākṣasas also spoke again these words to the twice-born, having indeed restrained the rākṣasas who had arrived from various directions, O king.)

अध्यैकदिवसं विप्रा न वोऽस्तीह भयं क्वचित्। राक्षसेभ्यः प्रमोदध्वमिष्टतो यात माचिरम् ॥१२-१६५-२३॥

(Now for one day, Brāhmaṇas, there is not for you any fear here from Rākṣasas; rejoice as you wish, go, do not delay.)
O Brāhmaṇas, today for one day you need not fear anything here from the Rākṣasas; rejoice as you wish and go without delay.
ततः प्रदुद्रुवुः सर्वे विप्रसङ्घाः समन्ततः। गौतमोऽपि सुवर्णस्य भारमादाय सत्वरः ॥१२-१६५-२४॥
tataḥ pradudruvuḥ sarve viprasaṅghāḥ samantataḥ। gautamo'pi suvarṇasya bhāram ādāya satvaraḥ ॥12-165-24॥

(Then all the groups of Brāhmaṇas ran away on all sides. Gautama also, having taken the load of gold, quickly (departed).)
Then all the groups of Brāhmaṇas fled in all directions. Gautama too quickly took the load of gold and left.
कृच्छ्रात्समुद्वहन्वीर न्यग्रोधं समुपागमत्। न्यषीदच्च परिश्रान्तः क्लान्तश्च क्षुधितश्च ह ॥१२-१६५-२५॥
kṛcchrāt samudvahan vīra nyagrodhaṃ samupāgamat। nyaṣīdac ca pariśrāntaḥ klāntaś ca kṣudhitaś ca ha ॥12-165-25॥
[कृच्छ्रात् (kṛcchrāt) - from hardship; समुद्वहन् (samudvahan) - having endured; वीरः (vīraḥ) - the hero; न्यग्रोधम् (nyagrodham) - banyan tree; समुपागमत् (samupāgamat) - approached; न्यषीदत् (nyaṣīdat) - sat down; च (ca) - and; परिश्रान्तः (pariśrāntaḥ) - exhausted; क्लान्तः (klāntaḥ) - weary; च (ca) - and; क्षुधितः (kṣudhitaḥ) - hungry; च (ca) - and; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(From hardship, having endured, the hero approached the banyan tree; and sat down, exhausted, weary, and hungry indeed.)
Having endured great hardship, the hero approached the banyan tree and, truly exhausted, weary, and hungry, sat down.
ततस्तमभ्यगाद्राजन्राजधर्मा खगोत्तमः। स्वागतेनाभ्यनन्दच्च गौतमं मित्रवत्सलः ॥१२-१६५-२६॥
tatastamabhyagādrājanrājadharmā khagottamaḥ। svāgatenābhyanandacca gautamaṃ mitravatsalaḥ ॥12-165-26॥

(Then him approached, O king, one who upholds royal duty, the best among birds; with a welcome greeted and Gautama, one who is affectionate to friends.)

तस्य पक्षाग्रविक्षेपैः क्लमं व्यपनयत्खगः। पूजां चाप्यकरोद्धीमान्भोजनं चाप्यकल्पयत् ॥१२-१६५-२७॥
tasya pakṣāgravikṣepaiḥ klamaṃ vyapanayat khagaḥ. pūjāṃ cāpy akarod dhīmān bhojanaṃ cāpy akalpayat ॥12-165-27॥

(The bird, by movements of the tips of the wings, removed his fatigue; the wise one also did honor and also prepared food.)
The bird relieved his fatigue by fanning him with the tips of its wings; the wise bird also honored him and prepared food.
स भुक्तवान्सुविश्रान्तो गौतमोऽचिन्तयत्तदा। हाटकस्याभिरूपस्य भारोऽयं सुमहान्मया ॥ गृहीतो लोभमोहाद्वै दूरं च गमनं मम ॥१२-१६५-२८॥
sa bhuktavān suviśrānto gautamo'cintayattadā। hāṭakasya abhirūpasya bhāro'yaṃ sumahān mayā॥ gṛhīto lobhamohād vai dūraṃ ca gamanaṃ mama॥12-165-28॥

(He, having eaten and well-rested, Gautama then thought: "This very great burden of beautiful gold has been taken by me out of greed and delusion indeed; and my journey is far.")
After eating and resting well, Gautama thought: "I have taken this very heavy and beautiful gold out of greed and delusion; and my journey is still far."
न चास्ति पथि भोक्तव्यं प्राणसन्धारणं मम। किं कृत्वा धारयेयं वै प्राणानित्यभ्यचिन्तयत् ॥१२-१६५-२९॥
na cāsti pathi bhoktavyaṃ prāṇasandhāraṇaṃ mama। kiṃ kṛtvā dhārayeyaṃ vai prāṇānity abhyacintayat ॥12-165-29॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्ति (asti) - there is; पथि (pathi) - on the path; भोक्तव्यम् (bhoktavyam) - to be eaten; प्राणसन्धारणम् (prāṇasandhāraṇam) - sustaining of life; मम (mama) - for me; किम् (kim) - what; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; धारयेयम् (dhārayeyam) - might I sustain; वै (vai) - indeed; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - the vital breaths; इति (iti) - thus; अभ्यचिन्तयत् (abhyacintayat) - he pondered;]
(Not and there is on the path to be eaten sustaining of life for me. What having done might I sustain indeed the vital breaths thus he pondered.)
There is nothing on the path for me to eat to sustain my life. He pondered, 'What should I do to sustain my vital breaths?'
ततः स पथि भोक्तव्यं प्रेक्षमाणो न किञ्चन। कृतघ्नः पुरुषव्याघ्र मनसेदमचिन्तयत् ॥१२-१६५-३०॥
tataḥ sa pathi bhoktavyaṃ prekṣamāṇo na kiñcana। kṛtaghnaḥ puruṣavyāghra manasedam acintayat ॥12-165-30॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; पथि (pathi) - on the path; भोक्तव्यम् (bhoktavyam) - to be eaten; प्रेक्षमाणः (prekṣamāṇaḥ) - observing; न (na) - not; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; कृतघ्नः (kṛtaghnaḥ) - ungrateful one; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; मनसा (manasā) - in (his) mind; इदम् (idam) - this; अचिन्तयत् (acintayat) - thought;]
(Then he, on the path, to be eaten, observing, not anything, the ungrateful one, tiger among men, in (his) mind, this, thought.)
Then the ungrateful one, observing nothing to eat on the path, thought this in his mind, O tiger among men.
अयं बकपतिः पार्श्वे मांसराशिः स्थितो मम। इमं हत्वा गृहीत्वा च यास्येऽहं समभिद्रुतम् ॥१२-१६५-३१॥
ayaṃ bakapatiḥ pārśve māṃsaráśiḥ sthito mama। imaṃ hatvā gṛhītvā ca yāsyé'haṃ samabhidrutam ॥12-165-31॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; बकपतिः (bakapatiḥ) - lord of cranes; पार्श्वे (pārśve) - at the side; मांसराशिः (māṃsaráśiḥ) - heap of flesh; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - placed; मम (mama) - my; इमम् (imam) - this; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; च (ca) - and; यास्ये (yāsyé) - I shall go; अहम् (aham) - I; समभिद्रुतम् (samabhidrutam) - having rushed together;]
(This lord of cranes is at my side, a heap of flesh placed. Having killed this (one) and having taken (it), I shall go, having rushed together.)
