अथ तत्र महार्चिष्माननलो वातसारथिः। तस्याविदूरे रक्षार्थं खगेन्द्रेण कृतोऽभवत् ॥१२-१६६-१॥
atha tatra mahārciṣmānanalo vātasārathiḥ। tasyāvidūre rakṣārthaṃ khagendreṇa kṛto'bhavat ॥12-166-1॥

(Then there, the greatly radiant fire with wind as charioteer. Not far from him, for protection, was made by the lord of birds.)

स चापि पार्श्वे सुष्वाप विश्वस्तो बकराट्तदा। कृतघ्नस्तु स दुष्टात्मा तं जिघांसुरजागरत् ॥१२-१६६-२॥

(He also slept well at the side, trusting the crane king then. But the ungrateful, wicked-minded one, desiring to kill him, remained awake.)

(Then, with a blazing firebrand, he struck him, confident. Having slain (him) and engaged with joy, he did not see further pursuit.)

(Then, on another day having passed, Virūpākṣa said to (his) son: "I do not see the kingly duties today, O son, O best of birds.")

स पूर्वसन्ध्यां ब्रह्माणं वन्दितुं याति सर्वदा। मां चादृष्ट्वा कदाचित्स न गच्छति गृहान्खगः ॥१२-१६६-६॥

(He always goes to salute Brahman at the morning twilight. Without seeing me at any time, that bird does not go to the houses.)

उभे द्विरात्रं सन्ध्ये वै नाभ्यगात्स ममालयम्। तस्मान्न शुध्यते भावो मम स ज्ञायतां सुहृत् ॥१२-१६६-७॥

[उभे (ubhe) - both; (dual) द्विरात्रम् (dvirātram) - two nights; (accusative singular) सन्ध्ये (sandhye) - twilights; (dual, vocative) वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; अभ्यगात् (abhyagāt) - approached; मम (mama) - my; आलयम् (ālayam) - abode; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; न (na) - not; शुध्यते (śudhyate) - is purified; भावः (bhāvaḥ) - state; disposition; मम (mama) - my; सः (saḥ) - he; ज्ञायताम् (jñāyatām) - let it be known; सुहृत् (suhṛt) - friend;]
(Both twilights, indeed, two nights did not approach my abode. Therefore, my state is not purified; let that be known, O friend.)
O friend, know that my mind is not at peace, for both twilights and two nights have not come to my abode.
स्वाध्यायेन वियुक्तो हि ब्रह्मवर्चसवर्जितः। तं गतस्तत्र मे शङ्का हन्यात्तं स द्विजाधमः ॥१२-१६६-८॥
svādhyāyena viyukto hi brahmavarcasavarjitaḥ। taṃ gatastatra me śaṅkā hanyāttaṃ sa dvijādhamaḥ ॥12-166-8॥
[स्वाध्यायेन (svādhyāyena) - by self-study; by recitation of the Veda; वियुक्तः (viyuktaḥ) - deprived; separated; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; ब्रह्मवर्चसवर्जितः (brahmavarcasavarjitaḥ) - bereft of Vedic lustre; devoid of spiritual brilliance; तं (taṃ) - him; that one; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; departed; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - my; to me; शङ्का (śaṅkā) - doubt; suspicion; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - may kill; may destroy; तं (taṃ) - him; that one; सः (saḥ) - he; द्विजाधमः (dvijādhamaḥ) - lowest of the twice-born; lowest Brāhmaṇa;]
(Indeed, one deprived of self-study, bereft of Vedic lustre—if he goes there, I have a doubt that the lowest of the twice-born may destroy him.)
If one who is deprived of self-study and devoid of spiritual brilliance goes there, I fear that the lowest of the twice-born may harm him.
दुराचारस्तु दुर्बुद्धिरिङ्गितैर्लक्षितो मया। निष्क्रियो दारुणाकारः कृष्णो दस्युरिवाधमः ॥१२-१६६-९॥
durācārastu durbuddhir iṅgitair lakṣito mayā। niṣkriyo dāruṇākāraḥ kṛṣṇo dasyur ivādhamah ॥12-166-9॥
[दुराचारः (durācāraḥ) - wicked in conduct; तु (tu) - but; दुर्बुद्धिः (durbuddhiḥ) - of evil intellect; इङ्गितैः (iṅgitaiḥ) - by gestures; लक्षितः (lakṣitaḥ) - marked; मया (mayā) - by me; निष्क्रियः (niṣkriyaḥ) - inactive; दारुणाकारः (dāruṇākāraḥ) - of terrible appearance; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; दस्युः (dasyuḥ) - like a bandit; इव (iva) - as if; अधमः (adhamaḥ) - the lowest;]
(Wicked in conduct but of evil intellect, by gestures marked by me, inactive, of terrible appearance, Kṛṣṇa, like a bandit, as if the lowest.)
Kṛṣṇa, wicked in conduct and of evil intellect, was identified by me through his gestures; he is inactive, of terrible appearance, and is like a bandit, the lowest of men.
गौतमः स गतस्तत्र तेनोद्विग्नं मनो मम। पुत्र शीघ्रमितो गत्वा राजधर्मनिवेशनम् ॥ ज्ञायतां स विशुद्धात्मा यदि जीवति माचिरम् ॥१२-१६६-१०॥
gautamaḥ sa gatastatra tenodvignaṃ mano mama। putra śīghramito gatvā rājadhamraniveśanam ॥ jñāyatāṃ sa viśuddhātmā yadi jīvati māciram ॥12-166-10॥
[गौतमः (gautamaḥ) - Gautama; (proper noun, name of a sage); सः (saḥ) - he; (that one); गतः (gataḥ) - gone; (departed); तत्र (tatra) - there; (to that place); तेन (tena) - by him; (through him); उद्विग्नं (udvignaṃ) - disturbed; (agitated); मनः (manaḥ) - mind; (thought); मम (mama) - my; (of me); पुत्र (putra) - son; (child); शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; (swiftly); इतः (itaḥ) - from here; (hence); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; (after going); राजधर्मनिवेशनम् (rājadhamaniveśanam) - royal court; (palace of king and ministers); ज्ञायताम् (jñāyatām) - let it be known; (ascertain); सः (saḥ) - he; (that one); विशुद्धात्मा (viśuddhātmā) - pure-souled; (of pure self); यदि (yadi) - if; (in case); जीवति (jīvati) - lives; (is alive); माचिरम् (māciram) - without delay; (immediately);]
(Gautama, he gone there, by him disturbed mind my. Son, quickly from here having gone to the royal court, let it be known whether he, the pure-souled, if lives, without delay.)
My mind is disturbed because Gautama has gone there. Son, quickly go from here to the royal court and find out at once whether that pure-souled one is still alive.
स एवमुक्तस्त्वरितो रक्षोभिः सहितो ययौ। न्यग्रोधं तत्र चापश्यत्कङ्कालं राजधर्मणः ॥१२-१६६-११॥
sa evam-uktas tvarito rakṣobhiḥ sahito yayau। nyagrodhaṃ tatra cāpaśyat-kaṅkālaṃ rājadharmaṇaḥ ॥12-166-11॥
[स (sa) - he; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - hurried; रक्षोभिः (rakṣobhiḥ) - with the rākṣasas; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; ययौ (yayau) - went; न्यग्रोधं (nyagrodham) - the banyan tree; तत्र (tatra) - there; च (ca) - and; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; कङ्कालं (kaṅkālam) - skeleton; राजधर्मणः (rājadharmaṇaḥ) - of Rājadharmaṇa (the king);]
(He, thus addressed, hurried, accompanied by the rākṣasas, went. There at the banyan tree he saw the skeleton of Rājadharmaṇa.)

स रुदन्नगमत्पुत्रो राक्षसेन्द्रस्य धीमतः। त्वरमाणः परं शक्त्या गौतमग्रहणाय वै ॥१२-१६६-१२॥
sa rudannagamatputro rākṣasendrasya dhīmataḥ। tvaramāṇaḥ paraṃ śaktyā gautamagṛhaṇāya vai ॥12-166-12॥
[स (sa) - he; रुदन् (rudan) - weeping; अगमत् (agamat) - went; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; राक्षसेन्द्रस्य (rākṣasendrasya) - of the king of the rākṣasas; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; त्वरमाणः (tvaramāṇaḥ) - hastening; परम् (param) - supreme; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - with power; गौतमग्रहणाय (gautamagṛhaṇāya) - for the seizing of Gautama; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(He, weeping, went, the son of the wise king of the rākṣasas, hastening with supreme power for the seizing of Gautama, indeed.)

[तम् (tam) - him; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; अथ (atha) - then; रक्षांसि (rakṣāṃsi) - the demons; द्रुतम् (drutam) - quickly; मेरुव्रजम् (meruvrajam) - to Meruvraja (the abode of Meru); ययुः (yayuḥ) - went; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; च (ca) - and; दर्शयामासुः (darśayāmāsuḥ) - showed; शरीरम् (śarīram) - the body; राजधर्मणः (rājadharmaṇaḥ) - of Rajadharmaṇa; कृतघ्नम् (kṛtaghnam) - ungrateful; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - man; तम् (tam) - him; च (ca) - and; गौतमम् (gautamam) - Gautama; पापचेतसम् (pāpacetasam) - evil-minded;]
(Having taken him, then the demons quickly went to Meruvraja. And they showed the body of Rajadharmaṇa to the king. The ungrateful man, that Gautama, evil-minded.)

[अस्य (asya) - of this; मांसैः (māṁsaiḥ) - by the flesh; इमे (ime) - these; सर्वे (sarve) - all; विहरन्तु (viharantu) - let them enjoy; यथेष्टतः (yatheṣṭataḥ) - as they wish; पापाचारः (pāpācāraḥ) - one of evil conduct; पापकर्मा (pāpakarmā) - one of evil deeds; पापात्मा (pāpātmā) - one of evil soul; पापनिश्चयः (pāpaniścayaḥ) - one of evil resolve; हन्तव्यः (hantavyaḥ) - to be killed; अयम् (ayam) - this; मम (mama) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you all; इति (iti) - thus; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - O Rākṣasas;]
(By the flesh of this, let all these enjoy as they wish. One of evil conduct, evil deeds, evil soul, evil resolve, is to be killed—this is my opinion by you all, thus, O Rākṣasas.)

इत्युक्ता राक्षसेन्द्रेण राक्षसा घोरविक्रमाः। नैच्छन्त तं भक्षयितुं पापकर्मायमित्युत ॥१२-१६६-१८॥

[इति (iti) - thus; उक्ता (uktā) - spoken; राक्षसेन्द्रेण (rākṣasendreṇa) - by the king of rākṣasas; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; घोरविक्रमाः (ghoravikramāḥ) - of terrible prowess; न (na) - not; ऐच्छन्त (aicchanta) - wished; तम् (tam) - him; भक्षयितुम् (bhakṣayitum) - to eat; पापकर्मा (pāpakarmā) - of evil deeds; अयम् (ayam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Thus spoken by the king of rākṣasas, the rākṣasas of terrible prowess did not wish to eat him, (saying) "This one is of evil deeds, thus indeed.")

दस्यूनां दीयतामेष साध्वद्य पुरुषाधमः। इत्यूचुस्तं महाराज राक्षसेन्द्रं निशाचराः ॥१२-१६६-१९॥

[दस्यूनाम् (dasyūnām) - of robbers; दीयताम् (dīyatām) - let be given; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; साधु (sādhu) - O good one; अद्य (adya) - today; पुरुष-अधमः (puruṣādhamaḥ) - lowest of men; इति (iti) - thus; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; तम् (tam) - to him; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; राक्षस-इन्द्रम् (rākṣasendram) - king of the rākṣasas; निशाचराः (niśācarāḥ) - night-wanderers;]
(Of robbers let this lowest of men be given today, O good one. Thus said to him, O great king, the night-wanderers to the king of the rākṣasas.)
The night-wanderers said to the king of the rākṣasas, "O great king, let this lowest of men be given to the robbers today, O good one."
शिरोभिश्च गता भूमिमूचू रक्षोगणाधिपम्। न दातुमर्हसि त्वं नो भक्षणायास्य किल्बिषम् ॥१२-१६६-२०॥
śirobhiś ca gatā bhūmim ūcū rakṣogaṇādhipam। na dātum arhasi tvaṃ no bhakṣaṇāyāsya kilbiṣam ॥12-166-20॥
[शिरोभिः (śirobhiḥ) - with (their) heads; च (ca) - and; गता (gatāḥ) - having gone; भूमिम् (bhūmim) - to the ground; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; रक्षोगणाधिपम् (rakṣogaṇādhipam) - to the lord of the hosts of demons; न (na) - not; दातुम् (dātum) - to give; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; त्वम् (tvam) - you; नः (naḥ) - to us; भक्षणाय (bhakṣaṇāya) - for eating; अस्य (asya) - of him; किल्बिषम् (kilbiṣam) - sin; ॥१२-१६६-२०॥ (॥12-166-20॥) - ;]
(With (their) heads and having gone to the ground, they said to the lord of the hosts of demons: "You ought not to give us the sin of eating him.")
They bowed their heads to the ground and said to the lord of the demon hosts: "You should not give us the sin of eating him."
एवमस्त्विति तानाह राक्षसेन्द्रो निशाचरान्। दस्यूनां दीयतामेष कृतघ्नोऽद्यैव राक्षसाः ॥१२-१६६-२१॥

[एवम् (evam) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; इति (iti) - so; तान् (tān) - to them; आह (āha) - said; राक्षसेन्द्रः (rākṣasendraḥ) - the king of rākṣasas; निशाचरान् (niśācarān) - night-wanderers; दस्यूनाम् (dasyūnām) - of the robbers; दीयताम् (dīyatām) - let be given; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; कृतघ्नः (kṛtaghnaḥ) - ungrateful one; अद्य (adya) - today; एव (eva) - indeed; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - O rākṣasas;]
(Thus let it be, so to them said the king of rākṣasas, to the night-wanderers. Of the robbers let this ungrateful one be given today indeed, O rākṣasas.)
The king of the rākṣasas said to the night-wanderers, "So be it." He ordered, "O rākṣasas, let this ungrateful one be handed over to the robbers today."
इत्युक्ते तस्य ते दासाः शूलमुद्गरपाणयः। छित्त्वा तं खण्डशः पापं दस्युभ्यः प्रददुस्तदा ॥१२-१६६-२२॥
ityukte tasya te dāsāḥ śūlamudgarapāṇayaḥ। chittvā taṃ khaṇḍaśaḥ pāpaṃ dasyubhyaḥ pradadus tadā ॥12-166-22॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been said; तस्य (tasya) - his; ते (te) - those; दासाः (dāsāḥ) - servants; शूल (śūla) - spears; मुद्गर (mudgara) - maces; पाणयः (pāṇayaḥ) - in (their) hands; छित्त्वा (chittvā) - having cut; तम् (tam) - him; खण्डशः (khaṇḍaśaḥ) - into pieces; पापम् (pāpam) - the wicked one; दस्युभ्यः (dasyubhyaḥ) - to the robbers; प्रददुः (pradaduḥ) - gave; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus, having been said, his those servants, with spears and maces in (their) hands, having cut him into pieces, the wicked one, gave (him) to the robbers then.)
When this was said, his servants, armed with spears and maces, cut the wicked one into pieces and then gave him to the robbers.
दस्यवश्चापि नैच्छन्त तमत्तुं पापकारिणम्। क्रव्यादा अपि राजेन्द्र कृतघ्नं नोपभुञ्जते ॥१२-१६६-२३॥
dasyavaś cāpi naicchanta tam attuṃ pāpakāriṇam। kravyādā api rājendra kṛtaghnaṃ nopabhuñjate ॥12-166-23॥
[दस्यवः (dasyavaḥ) - robbers; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; न (na) - not; ऐच्छन्त (aicchanta) - desired; तम् (tam) - him; अत्तुं (attuṃ) - to eat; पापकारिणम् (pāpakāriṇam) - evil-doer; क्रव्यादाः (kravyādāḥ) - flesh-eaters; अपि (api) - even; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; कृतघ्नम् (kṛtaghnam) - ungrateful one; न (na) - not; उपभुञ्जते (upabhuñjate) - consume;]
(Robbers also did not desire to eat him, the evil-doer. Even flesh-eaters, O king, do not consume the ungrateful one.)

ब्रह्मघ्ने च सुरापे च चोरे भग्नव्रते तथा। निष्कृतिर्विहिता राजन्कृतघ्ने नास्ति निष्कृतिः ॥१२-१६६-२४॥

[ब्रह्मघ्ने (brahma-ghne) - to the slayer of a Brāhmaṇa; च (ca) - and; सुरापे (surāpe) - to the drinker of intoxicating liquor; च (ca) - and; चोरे (core) - to the thief; भग्नव्रते (bhagna-vrate) - to the breaker of a vow; तथा (tathā) - likewise; निष्कृतिः (niṣkṛtiḥ) - expiation; विहिता (vihitā) - is prescribed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कृतघ्ने (kṛtaghne) - to the ungrateful one; नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; निष्कृतिः (niṣkṛtiḥ) - expiation;]
(To the slayer of a Brāhmaṇa, and to the drinker of intoxicating liquor, and to the thief, to the breaker of a vow likewise, expiation is prescribed, O king; to the ungrateful one, expiation does not exist.)
O king, expiation is prescribed for the slayer of a Brāhmaṇa, the drinker of intoxicating liquor, the thief, and the breaker of a vow; but for the ungrateful one, there is no expiation.
मित्रद्रोही नृशंसश्च कृतघ्नश्च नराधमः। क्रव्यादैः कृमिभिश्चान्यैर्न भुज्यन्ते हि तादृशाः ॥१२-१६६-२५॥

(A betrayer of a friend, a cruel person, an ungrateful person, the vilest of men—such ones are indeed not eaten by flesh-eaters, worms, or others.)
Those who betray friends, are cruel, ungrateful, and the lowest among men—such people are not consumed even by flesh-eating beings, worms, or others.
