ततश्चितां बकपतेः कारयामास राक्षसः। रत्नैर्गन्धैश्च बहुभिर्वस्त्रैश्च समलङ्कृताम् ॥१२-१६७-१॥
tataś citāṃ bakapateḥ kārayāmāsa rākṣasaḥ। ratnaiḥ gandhaiś ca bahubhir vastraiś ca samalaṅkṛtām ॥12-167-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; चिताम् (citām) - funeral pyre; बकपतेः (bakapateḥ) - of the lord of Baka (Baka demon); कारयामास (kārayāmāsa) - caused to be made; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the demon; रत्नैः (ratnaiḥ) - with jewels; गन्धैः (gandhaiḥ) - with perfumes; च (ca) - and; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - with many; वस्त्रैः (vastraiḥ) - with garments; च (ca) - and; समलङ्कृताम् (samalaṅkṛtām) - well adorned;]
(Then the demon caused the funeral pyre of the lord of Baka to be made, well adorned with many jewels, perfumes, and garments.)

तस्या वक्त्राच्च्युतः फेनः क्षीरमिश्रस्तदानघ। सोऽपतद्वै ततस्तस्यां चितायां राजधर्मणः ॥१२-१६७-४॥
tasyā vaktrāccyutaḥ phenaḥ kṣīramiśrastadānagha। so'patadvai tatastasyāṃ citāyāṃ rājadharmaṇaḥ ॥12-167-4॥

(Of her, from the mouth, fallen foam mixed with milk then, O sinless one; he indeed fell from there on that funeral pyre of Rājadharmaṇaḥ.)
O sinless one, then foam mixed with milk fell from her mouth and landed on the funeral pyre of Rājadharmaṇaḥ.
ततः सञ्जीवितस्तेन बकराजस्तदानघ। उत्पत्य च समेयाय विरूपाक्षं बकाधिपः ॥१२-१६७-५॥
tataḥ sañjīvitastena bakarājastadānagha। utpatya ca sameyāya virūpākṣaṃ bakādhipaḥ ॥12-167-5॥

(Then, revived by him, the king of cranes at that time, O sinless one, having risen, and approached Virupaksha, the lord of cranes.)

ततोऽभ्ययाद्देवराजो विरूपाक्षपुरं तदा। प्राह चेदं विरूपाक्षं दिष्ट्यायं जीवतीत्युत ॥१२-१६७-६॥
tato'bhyayād devarājo virūpākṣapuraṃ tadā। prāha cedaṃ virūpākṣaṃ diṣṭyāyaṃ jīvatītyuta ॥12-167-6॥

(Then the king of the gods approached Virupaksha's city at that time. And he said this to Virupaksha: "By fortune, this one is alive," indeed.)

श्रावयामास चेन्द्रस्तं विरूपाक्षं पुरातनम्। यथा शापः पुरा दत्तो ब्रह्मणा राजधर्मणः ॥१२-१६७-७॥
śrāvayāmāsa cendras taṃ virūpākṣaṃ purātanam। yathā śāpaḥ purā datto brahmaṇā rājadharmaṇaḥ ॥12-167-7॥

(Indra also caused that ancient Virūpākṣa to hear, as formerly the curse was given by Brahmā to Rājadharma.)

यदा बकपती राजन्ब्रह्माणं नोपसर्पति। ततो रोषादिदं प्राह बकेन्द्राय पितामहः ॥१२-१६७-८॥
yadā bakapatī rājan brahmāṇaṃ nopasarpati। tato roṣād idaṃ prāha bakendrāya pitāmahaḥ ॥12-167-8॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; बकपती (bakapatī) - lord of Baka; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ब्रह्माणं (brahmāṇam) - Brahmā; न (na) - not; उपसर्पति (upasarpati) - approaches; ततः (tataḥ) - then; रोषात् (roṣāt) - from anger; इदं (idaṃ) - this; प्राह (prāha) - said; बकेन्द्राय (bakendrāya) - to the lord of Baka; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire (Brahmā);]
(When the lord of Baka, O king, does not approach Brahmā, then from anger, this the grandsire (Brahmā) said to the lord of Baka.)
O king, when the lord of Baka did not approach Brahmā, then, out of anger, the grandsire (Brahmā) spoke these words to the lord of Baka.
यस्मान्मूढो मम सदो नागतोऽसौ बकाधमः। तस्माद्वधं स दुष्टात्मा नचिरात्समवाप्स्यति ॥१२-१६७-९॥
yasmān mūḍho mama sadā na āgataḥ asau baka-adhamaḥ। tasmāt vadham sa duṣṭātmā na cirāt samavāpsyati॥12-167-9॥
[यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because of which; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - deluded one; मम (mama) - my; सदा (sadā) - always; न (na) - not; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has come; असौ (asau) - that; बकाधमः (baka-adhamaḥ) - wicked Baka; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; वधम् (vadham) - slaying; सः (saḥ) - he; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - evil-minded; न (na) - not; चिरात् (cirāt) - after a long time; समवाप्स्यति (samavāpsyati) - will obtain;]
(Because that deluded one, the wicked Baka, has never come to me, therefore that evil-minded one will not take long to obtain slaying.)

तदायं तस्य वचनान्निहतो गौतमेन वै। तेनैवामृतसिक्तश्च पुनः सञ्जीवितो बकः ॥१२-१६७-१०॥
tadāyaṃ tasya vacanānnihato gautamena vai। tenaivāmṛtasiktaśca punaḥ sañjīvito bakaḥ ॥12-167-10॥
[तदा (tadā) - then; अयम् (ayam) - this (one); तस्य (tasya) - his; वचनात् (vacanāt) - from the word; निहतः (nihataḥ) - struck down; गौतमेन (gautamena) - by Gautama; वै (vai) - indeed; तेन (tena) - by him; एव (eva) - indeed; अमृतसिक्तः (amṛtasiktaḥ) - sprinkled with nectar; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; सञ्जीवितः (sañjīvitaḥ) - revived; बकः (bakaḥ) - the crane;]
(Then this (one), by his word, was struck down by Gautama indeed. By him, indeed, sprinkled with nectar and again revived, the crane.)

राजधर्मा ततः प्राह प्रणिपत्य पुरंदरम्। यदि तेऽनुग्रहकृता मयि बुद्धिः पुरंदर ॥ सखायं मे सुदयितं गौतमं जीवयेत्युत ॥१२-१६७-११॥
rājadharmā tataḥ prāha praṇipatya puraṃdaram। yadi te'nugrahakṛtā mayi buddhiḥ puraṃdara ॥ sakhāyaṃ me sudayitaṃ gautamaṃ jīvayet yuta ॥12-167-11॥

(Rājadharmā then said, having bowed down to Indra: If your intention towards me is made by favor, O Indra, may you indeed make my very dear friend Gautama live.)
Rājadharmā, after bowing to Indra, said: "If your intention towards me is out of favor, O Indra, then please bring my beloved friend Gautama back to life."
तस्य वाक्यं समाज्ञाय वासवः पुरुषर्षभ। सञ्जीवयित्वा सख्ये वै प्रादात्तं गौतमं तदा ॥१२-१६७-१२॥
tasya vākyaṃ samājñāya vāsavaḥ puruṣarṣabha। sañjīvayitvā sakhye vai prādāttaṃ gautamaṃ tadā ॥12-167-12॥

Having understood his words, Indra, the best among men, revived Gautama and then gave him back in friendship.
सभाण्डोपस्करं राजंस्तमासाद्य बकाधिपः। सम्परिष्वज्य सुहृदं प्रीत्या परमया युतः ॥१२-१६७-१३॥
sabhāṇḍopaskaraṃ rājaṃs tam āsādya bakādhipaḥ। sampariṣvajya suhṛdaṃ prītyā paramayā yutaḥ ॥12-167-13॥

(With all vessels and implements, O king, having approached him, the lord of the herons, having embraced his friend with supreme affection, endowed (with love).)

अथ तं पापकर्माणं राजधर्मा बकाधिपः। विसर्जयित्वा सधनं प्रविवेश स्वमालयम् ॥१२-१६७-१४॥
atha taṃ pāpakarmāṇaṃ rājadhamrā bakādhipaḥ। visarjayitvā sadhanaṃ praviveśa svamālayam ॥12-167-14॥

कुतः कृतघ्नस्य यशः कुतः स्थानं कुतः सुखम्। अश्रद्धेयः कृतघ्नो हि कृतघ्ने नास्ति निष्कृतिः ॥१२-१६७-१९॥

(From where is fame for the ungrateful? From where is position? From where is happiness? The ungrateful is untrustworthy indeed; for the ungrateful, there is no atonement.)
How can the ungrateful have fame, position, or happiness? The ungrateful person is truly untrustworthy; for such a one, there is no redemption.
मित्रद्रोहो न कर्तव्यः पुरुषेण विशेषतः। मित्रध्रुङ्निरयं घोरमनन्तं प्रतिपद्यते ॥१२-१६७-२०॥
mitradroho na kartavyaḥ puruṣeṇa viśeṣataḥ। mitradhruṅnirayaṃ ghoramanantaṃ pratipadyate ॥12-167-20॥
[मित्रद्रोहः (mitradrohaḥ) - betrayal of a friend; न (na) - not; कर्तव्यः (kartavyaḥ) - should be done; पुरुषेण (puruṣeṇa) - by a person; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; मित्रध्रुक् (mitradhruk) - one who betrays a friend; निरयम् (nirayam) - hell; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; अनन्तम् (anantam) - endless; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - attains;]

कृतज्ञेन सदा भाव्यं मित्रकामेन चानघ। मित्रात्प्रभवते सत्यं मित्रात्प्रभवते बलम् ॥ सत्कारैरुत्तमैर्मित्रं पूजयेत विचक्षणः ॥१२-१६७-२१॥
kṛtajñena sadā bhāvyaṃ mitrakāmena cānagha। mitrātprabhavate satyaṃ mitrātprabhavate balam ॥ satkārairuttamairmitraṃ pūjayeta vicakṣaṇaḥ ॥12-167-21॥

(By one who is grateful, always should be regarded, by one desiring friendship and O sinless one. From a friend arises truth, from a friend arises strength. With the best honours, a friend should be honoured by the wise one.)
O sinless one, one who desires friendship should always be grateful. Truth and strength arise from friendship. The wise should honour a friend with the best of honours.
परित्याज्यो बुधैः पापः कृतघ्नो निरपत्रपः। मित्रद्रोही कुलाङ्गारः पापकर्मा नराधमः ॥१२-१६७-२२॥

(The wicked, the ungrateful, the shameless, the betrayer of friends, the disgrace of the family, the doer of evil deeds, the vilest of men—such a one is to be abandoned by the wise.)
The wise should abandon a person who is wicked, ungrateful, shameless, betrays friends, is a disgrace to the family, does evil deeds, and is the vilest among men.
एष धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठ प्रोक्तः पापो मया तव। मित्रद्रोही कृतघ्नो वै किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि ॥१२-१६७-२३॥
