kālamṛtyuyamānāṃ ca brāhmaṇasya ca sattama। vivādo vyāhṛtaḥ pūrvaṃ tadbhavānvaktumarhati ॥12-192-1॥
[काल (kāla) - time; मृत्यु (mṛtyu) - death; यमानां (yamānām) - of Yama (god of death); च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brāhmaṇa; च (ca) - and; सत्तम (sattama) - O best one; विवादः (vivādaḥ) - dispute; व्याहृतः (vyāhṛtaḥ) - spoken; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - before; तत् (tat) - that; भवान् (bhavān) - you; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हति (arhati) - are worthy;]

अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। इक्ष्वाकोः सूर्यपुत्रस्य यद्वृत्तं ब्राह्मणस्य च ॥१२-१९२-२॥
atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। ikṣvākoḥ sūryaputrasya yad vṛttaṃ brāhmaṇasya ca ॥12-192-2॥

कालस्य मृत्योश्च तथा यद्वृत्तं तन्निबोध मे। यथा स तेषां संवादो यस्मिन्स्थानेऽपि चाभवत् ॥१२-१९२-३॥

Hear from me what happened regarding time and death, and how and where that conversation among them took place.
ब्राह्मणो जापकः कश्चिद्धर्मवृत्तो महायशाः। षडङ्गविन्महाप्राज्ञः पैप्पलादिः स कौशिकः ॥१२-१९२-४॥
brāhmaṇo jāpakaḥ kaścid dharmavṛtto mahāyaśāḥ। ṣaḍaṅgavin-mahāprājñaḥ paippalādiḥ sa kauśikaḥ॥12-192-4॥
[ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a Brāhmaṇa; जापकः (jāpakaḥ) - one who chants; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; धर्मवृत्तः (dharmavṛttaḥ) - whose conduct is righteous; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - of great fame; षडङ्गवित् (ṣaḍaṅgavit) - knower of the six limbs (of the Veda); महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - very wise; पैप्पलादिः (paippalādiḥ) - descendant of Paippalāda; सः (saḥ) - he; कौशिकः (kauśikaḥ) - descendant of Kuśika;]
(A Brāhmaṇa, one who chants, someone whose conduct is righteous, of great fame, knower of the six limbs, very wise, descendant of Paippalāda, he, descendant of Kuśika.)
He was a Brāhmaṇa, a chanter, a man of righteous conduct and great fame, learned in the six limbs of the Veda, very wise, a descendant of Paippalāda, and a descendant of Kuśika.
तस्यापरोक्षं विज्ञानं षडङ्गेषु तथैव च। वेदेषु चैव निष्णातो हिमवत्पादसंश्रयः ॥१२-१९२-५॥
tasyāparokṣaṃ vijñānaṃ ṣaḍaṅgeṣu tathaiva ca। vedeṣu caiva niṣṇāto himavatpādasaṃśrayaḥ ॥12-192-5॥

सोऽन्त्यं ब्राह्मं तपस्तेपे संहितां संयतो जपन्। तस्य वर्षसहस्रं तु नियमेन तथा गतम् ॥१२-१९२-६॥
so'ntyaṃ brāhmaṃ tapastepe saṃhitāṃ saṃyato japan। tasya varṣasahasraṃ tu niyamena tathā gatam ॥12-192-6॥

(He, practicing the final Brahman austerity, self-restrained, reciting the Saṃhitā, for him a thousand years thus passed with discipline.)
He practiced the supreme Brahman austerity, self-restrained and reciting the Saṃhitā; for him, a thousand years thus passed in disciplined observance.
स देव्या दर्शितः साक्षात्प्रीतास्मीति तदा किल। जप्यमावर्तयंस्तूष्णीं न च तां किञ्चिदब्रवीत् ॥१२-१९२-७॥
sa devyā darśitaḥ sākṣātpṛtāsmīti tadā kila। japyamāvartayaṃstūṣṇīṃ na ca tāṃ kiñcidabravīt ॥12-192-7॥
[स (sa) - he; देव्या (devyā) - by the goddess; दर्शितः (darśitaḥ) - shown; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; प्रीता (prītā) - pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; तदा (tadā) - then; किल (kila) - indeed; जप्यम् (japyam) - recitation; आवर्तयन् (āvartayan) - repeating; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - in silence; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ताम् (tām) - to her; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(He, having been shown directly by the goddess, (thought) 'I am pleased,' then indeed, repeating the recitation in silence, did not say anything to her.)
He was directly revealed by the goddess, and thinking 'I am pleased,' at that moment, he silently continued his recitation and did not say anything to her.
तस्यानुकम्पया देवी प्रीता समभवत्तदा। वेदमाता ततस्तस्य तज्जप्यं समपूजयत् ॥१२-१९२-८॥
tasyānukampayā devī prītā samabhavattadā। vedamātā tatasttasya tajjapyaṃ samapūjayat ॥12-192-8॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; अनुकम्पया (anukampayā) - by compassion; देवी (devī) - the goddess; प्रीता (prītā) - pleased; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; तदा (tadā) - then; वेदमाता (vedamātā) - the mother of the Vedas; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्य (tasya) - his; तत् (tat) - that; जप्यं (japyaṃ) - recitation; समपूजयत् (samapūjayat) - worshipped completely;]
(By his compassion, the goddess became pleased then. The mother of the Vedas then completely worshipped his recitation.)
Out of compassion for him, the goddess was pleased at that time. Then, the mother of the Vedas fully honored his recitation.
समाप्तजप्यस्तूत्थाय शिरसा पादयोस्तथा। पपात देव्या धर्मात्मा वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥१२-१९२-९॥
samāptajapyastūtthāya śirasā pādayostathā। papāta devyā dharmātmā vacanaṃ cedamabravīt ॥12-192-9॥
[समाप्त-जप्यः (samāpta-japyaḥ) - one who has finished the recitation; तुत्थाय (tūtthāya) - having risen; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (his) head; पादयोः (pādayoḥ) - at (her) feet; तथा (tathā) - thus; पपात (papāta) - fell; देव्याः (devyāḥ) - to the queen; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - the righteous one; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having finished the recitation, having risen, with (his) head at (her) feet thus, the righteous one fell to the queen and spoke these words.)
Having completed the recitation, he rose, placed his head at her feet, and the righteous one fell before the queen and spoke these words.
दिष्ट्या देवि प्रसन्ना त्वं दर्शनं चागता मम। यदि वापि प्रसन्नासि जप्ये मे रमतां मनः ॥१२-१९२-१०॥
diṣṭyā devi prasannā tvaṃ darśanaṃ cāgatā mama| yadi vāpi prasannāsi japye me ramatāṃ manaḥ ॥12-192-10॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; by destiny; देवि (devi) - O goddess; प्रसन्ना (prasannā) - pleased; gracious; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; appearance; च (ca) - and; आगता (āgatā) - have come; मम (mama) - to me; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; प्रसन्ना (prasannā) - pleased; gracious; असि (asi) - you are; जप्ये (japye) - in recitation; in chanting; मे (me) - my; रमताम् (ramatām) - may it delight; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(By fortune, O goddess, pleased you, sight and have come to me. If or even pleased you are, in recitation my may it delight mind.)
O goddess, by good fortune you, being pleased, have come into my sight. If you are indeed pleased, may my mind find delight in recitation.
सावित्र्युवाच॥

किं प्रार्थयसि विप्रर्षे किं चेष्टं करवाणि ते। प्रब्रूहि जपतां श्रेष्ठ सर्वं तत्ते भविष्यति ॥१२-१९२-११॥
kiṃ prārthayasi viprarṣe kiṃ ceṣṭaṃ karavāṇi te। prabrūhi japatāṃ śreṣṭha sarvaṃ tatte bhaviṣyati ॥12-192-11॥
[किं (kiṃ) - what; प्रार्थयसि (prārthayasi) - you request; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; किं (kiṃ) - what; चेष्टं (ceṣṭam) - action; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - shall I do; ते (te) - for you; प्रब्रूहि (prabrūhi) - tell; जपतां (japatām) - of those who recite; श्रेष्ठ (śreṣṭha) - best; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - for you; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(What do you request, O best of Brāhmaṇas? What action shall I do for you? Tell (me), O best of those who recite. All that will be for you.)
O best of Brāhmaṇas, what do you request? What action shall I perform for you? Please tell me, O best among those who recite. All that you desire will be done for you.
भीष्म उवाच॥

इत्युक्तः स तदा देव्या विप्रः प्रोवाच धर्मवित्। जप्यं प्रति ममेच्छेयं वर्धत्विति पुनः पुनः ॥१२-१९२-१२॥
ityuktaḥ sa tadā devyā vipraḥ provāca dharmavit। japyaṃ prati mameccheyaṃ vardhatviti punaḥ punaḥ ॥12-192-12॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; स (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; देव्याः (devyā) - by the goddess; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke forth; धर्मवित् (dharmavit) - knower of dharma; जप्यं (japyaṃ) - recitation; प्रति (prati) - towards; मम (mama) - my; इच्छेयं (iccheyaṃ) - I wish; वर्धत् (vardhat) - may it increase; इति (iti) - thus; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Thus having been addressed, he then by the goddess, the brāhmaṇa, knower of dharma, spoke forth: "As regards the recitation, I wish that mine may increase, thus, again and again.")
Thus addressed by the goddess, the brāhmaṇa who knew dharma then spoke: "As for the recitation, I wish that mine may increase again and again."
मनसश्च समाधिर्मे वर्धेताहरहः शुभे। तत्तथेति ततो देवी मधुरं प्रत्यभाषत ॥१२-१९२-१३॥
manasaś ca samādhir me vardhetāharahaḥ śubhe. tat tatheti tato devī madhuraṃ pratyabhāṣata ॥12-192-13॥
[मनसः (manasaḥ) - of the mind; च (ca) - and; समाधिः (samādhiḥ) - concentration; मे (me) - my; वर्धेत (vardheta) - may increase; अहरहः (aharahaḥ) - day by day; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; तत् (tat) - that; तथ (tatha) - so; इति (iti) - thus; ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवी (devī) - the goddess; मधुरम् (madhuram) - sweetly; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - spoke in reply;]
(Of the mind and concentration, may mine increase day by day, O auspicious one. That so—thus then the goddess sweetly spoke in reply.)
May my concentration of mind increase day by day, O auspicious one. Hearing this, the goddess sweetly replied, "So be it."
इदं चैवापरं प्राह देवी तत्प्रियकाम्यया। निरयं नैव यातासि यत्र याता द्विजर्षभाः ॥१२-१९२-१४॥
idaṃ caivāparaṃ prāha devī tatpriyakāmyayā। nirayaṃ naiva yātāsi yatra yātā dvijarṣabhāḥ ॥12-192-14॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अपरं (aparaṃ) - another; प्राह (prāha) - said; देवी (devī) - the goddess; तत् (tat) - that; प्रियकाम्यया (priyakāmyayā) - with the desire to please; निरयं (nirayaṃ) - hell; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; यातासि (yātāsi) - you have gone; यत्र (yatra) - where; याता (yātā) - have gone; द्विजर्षभाः (dvijarṣabhāḥ) - the best of twice-born (brāhmaṇas);]
(This and also another (thing) indeed the goddess said with the desire to please that (person): "You have not gone to hell, where the best of twice-born have gone.")
The goddess, wishing to please, said this and another thing: "You have not gone to hell, where the foremost of brāhmaṇas have gone."
यास्यसि ब्रह्मणः स्थानमनिमित्तमनिन्दितम्। साधये भविता चैतद्यत्त्वयाहमिहार्थिता ॥१२-१९२-१५॥
yāsyasi brahmaṇaḥ sthānam animittam aninditam। sādhaye bhavitā ca etad yat tvayā aham iha arthitā ॥12-192-15॥
[यास्यसि (yāsyasi) - you will go; (from √yā, to go; future, 2nd person singular); ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahman; (genitive singular of brahman); स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; (noun, neuter); अनिमित्तम् (animittam) - without cause; (a-nimitta, not having cause); अनिन्दितम् (aninditam) - blameless; (a-nindita, not censured); साधये (sādhaye) - I will accomplish; (from √sādh, to accomplish; 1st person singular, future); भविता (bhavitā) - will be; (from √bhū, to be; future participle); च (ca) - and; (conjunction); एतत् (etad) - this; (pronoun, neuter); यत् (yat) - which; (relative pronoun); त्वया (tvayā) - by you; (instrumental singular of tvam); अहम् (aham) - I; (pronoun, first person singular); इह (iha) - here; (adverb); अर्थिता (arthitā) - requested; (from √arth, to request; past participle, feminine singular);]
(You will go to the place of Brahman, without cause, blameless. I will accomplish this which by you I have been requested here. )
You will reach the blameless, causeless abode of Brahman. I will fulfill this request you have made of me here.
नियतो जप चैकाग्रो धर्मस्त्वां समुपैष्यति। कालो मृत्युर्यमश्चैव समायास्यन्ति तेऽन्तिकम् ॥ भविता च विवादोऽत्र तव तेषां च धर्मतः ॥१२-१९२-१६॥
niyato japa caikāgro dharmastvāṃ samupaiṣyati। kālo mṛtyuryamaścaiva samāyāsyanti te'ntikam ॥ bhavitā ca vivādo'tra tava teṣāṃ ca dharmataḥ ॥12-192-16॥
[नियतः (niyataḥ) - restrained; जपः (japaḥ) - recitation; च (ca) - and; एकाग्रः (ekāgraḥ) - one-pointed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; समुपैष्यति (samupaiṣyati) - will approach; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama (god of death); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समायास्यन्ति (samāyāsyanti) - will come; ते (te) - to you; अन्तिकम् (antikam) - near; भविता (bhavitā) - there will be; च (ca) - and; विवादः (vivādaḥ) - dispute; अत्र (atra) - here; तव (tava) - your; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; च (ca) - and; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - according to righteousness;]
(Restrained, recitation, and one-pointed righteousness will approach you. Time, death, and Yama indeed will come near to you. There will be a dispute here, of yours and theirs, according to righteousness.)
With restraint, recitation, and single-minded righteousness will come to you. Time, death, and Yama will also approach you. There will be a dispute here, between you and them, according to righteousness.
एवमुक्त्वा भगवती जगाम भवनं स्वकम्। ब्राह्मणोऽपि जपन्नास्ते दिव्यं वर्षशतं तदा ॥१२-१९२-१७॥
evam-uktvā bhagavatī jagāma bhavanaṃ svakam। brāhmaṇo'pi japannāste divyaṃ varṣaśataṃ tadā ॥12-192-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; भगवती (bhagavatī) - the revered lady; जगाम (jagāma) - went; भवनं (bhavanaṃ) - house; स्वकम् (svakam) - her own; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; अपि (api) - also; जपन् (japan) - reciting (mantras); आस्ते (āste) - remained; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; वर्षशतम् (varṣaśatam) - a hundred years; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus, having spoken, the revered lady went to her own house. The brāhmaṇa also, reciting (mantras), remained then for a divine hundred years.)
Having said this, the revered lady went to her own house. The brāhmaṇa, too, remained there reciting mantras for a divine hundred years at that time.
समाप्ते नियमे तस्मिन्नथ विप्रस्य धीमतः। साक्षात्प्रीतस्तदा धर्मो दर्शयामास तं द्विजम् ॥१२-१९२-१८॥
samāpte niyame tasminnatha viprasya dhīmataḥ। sākṣātprītastadā dharmo darśayāmāsa taṃ dvijam ॥12-192-18॥
[समाप्ते (samāpte) - on completion; नियमे (niyame) - of the observance; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; अथ (atha) - then; विप्रस्य (viprasya) - of the Brāhmaṇa; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; तदा (tadā) - then; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma (the personification of righteousness); दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - manifested; तम् (tam) - to him; द्विजम् (dvijam) - the Brāhmaṇa;]
(On completion of the observance, then, to that wise Brāhmaṇa, directly pleased, Dharma manifested himself to that Brāhmaṇa.)
When the observance was completed, then Dharma, being directly pleased, manifested himself to that wise Brāhmaṇa.

द्विजाते पश्य मां धर्ममहं त्वां द्रष्टुमागतः। जप्यस्य च फलं यत्ते सम्प्राप्तं तच्च मे शृणु ॥१२-१९२-१९॥
dvijāte paśya māṃ dharmamahaṃ tvāṃ draṣṭumāgataḥ। japyasya ca phalaṃ yatte samprāptaṃ tacca me śṛṇu ॥12-192-19॥
[द्विजाते (dvijāte) - O twice-born; (addressing a Brāhmaṇa); पश्य (paśya) - see; मां (māṃ) - me; धर्ममहं (dharmamahaṃ) - I (am) Dharma; (righteousness); त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have come; जप्यस्य (japyasya) - of the recitation; (of mantra); च (ca) - and; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; (result); यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - to you; सम्प्राप्तं (samprāptaṃ) - has been obtained; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; (listen);]
(O twice-born, see me; I am Dharma. I have come to see you. And the fruit of the recitation which has been obtained by you, that also hear from me.)
O Brāhmaṇa, behold me; I am Dharma. I have come to see you. Now, listen to me as I tell you the fruit of the recitation you have attained.
जिता लोकास्त्वया सर्वे ये दिव्या ये च मानुषाः। देवानां निरयान्साधो सर्वानुत्क्रम्य यास्यसि ॥१२-१९२-२०॥
jitā lokās tvayā sarve ye divyā ye ca mānuṣāḥ। devānāṃ nirayān sādho sarvān utkramya yāsyasi॥12-192-20॥
[जिता (jitā) - conquered; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ये (ye) - who; दिव्याः (divyāḥ) - divine; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; मानुषाः (mānuṣāḥ) - human; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; निरयान् (nirayān) - hells; साधो (sādho) - O noble one; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; उत्क्रम्य (utkramya) - having transcended; यास्यसि (yāsyasi) - you will go;]
(All the worlds, both divine and human, have been conquered by you; O noble one, having transcended all the hells of the gods, you will go.)
You have conquered all worlds, both those of the gods and of men; O noble one, you will go beyond all the hells of the gods.
प्राणत्यागं कुरु मुने गच्छ लोकान्यथेप्सितान्। त्यक्त्वात्मनः शरीरं च ततो लोकानवाप्स्यसि ॥१२-१९२-२१॥
prāṇatyāgaṃ kuru mune gaccha lokānyathepsitān। tyaktvātmanaḥ śarīraṃ ca tato lokānavāpsyasi ॥12-192-21॥
[प्राणत्यागं (prāṇatyāgam) - abandonment of life-breath; कुरु (kuru) - do; मुने (mune) - O sage; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; यथ (yatha) - as; इप्सितान् (ipsitān) - desired; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of your self; शरीरं (śarīram) - body; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will attain;]
(Abandon the life-breath, O sage, do (so), go to the worlds as desired; having abandoned your body and your self, then you will attain the worlds.)
O sage, relinquish your life-breath and body, and then you will attain the worlds you desire.
ब्राह्मण उवाच॥

कृतं लोकैर्हि मे धर्म गच्छ च त्वं यथासुखम्। बहुदुःखसुखं देहं नोत्सृजेयमहं विभो ॥१२-१९२-२२॥
kṛtaṃ lokair hi me dharma gaccha ca tvaṃ yathāsukham। bahuduḥkhasukhaṃ dehaṃ notsṛjeyam ahaṃ vibho ॥12-192-22॥
[कृतं (kṛtam) - done; accomplished; लोकैः (lokaiḥ) - by the people; by the worlds; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; मे (me) - by me; for me; धर्म (dharma) - duty; righteousness; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; proceed; च (ca) - and; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; यथा (yathā) - as; according to; सुखम् (sukham) - comfort; happiness; बहु (bahu) - much; many; दुःखसुखं (duḥkhasukham) - pain and pleasure; suffering and happiness; देहं (deham) - body; न (na) - not; उत्सृजेयम् (utsṛjeyam) - I would abandon; I would give up; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; विभो (vibho) - O lord; O master;]
(Done by the people indeed is my duty; go and you as you please. This body, full of much pain and pleasure, I would not abandon, O lord.)
My duty has indeed been fulfilled by the people; you may go as you wish. I will not abandon this body, which is full of much pain and pleasure, O lord.
धर्म उवाच॥

अवश्यं भोः शरीरं ते त्यक्तव्यं मुनिपुङ्गव। स्वर्ग आरोह्यतां विप्र किं वा ते रोचतेऽनघ ॥१२-१९२-२३॥
avaśyaṃ bhoḥ śarīraṃ te tyaktavyaṃ munipuṅgava। svarga ārohyatāṃ vipra kiṃ vā te rocate'nagha ॥12-192-23॥
[अवश्यं (avaśyam) - certainly; भोः (bhoḥ) - O; (vocative particle); शरीरं (śarīram) - body; ते (te) - your; त्यक्तव्यं (tyaktavyam) - to be abandoned; मुनिपुङ्गव (munipuṅgava) - O best of sages; स्वर्ग (svarga) - heaven; आरोह्यतां (ārohyatām) - let (it) be ascended; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; किं (kiṃ) - what; वा (vā) - or; ते (te) - to you; रोचते (rocate) - pleases; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Certainly, O! your body is to be abandoned, O best of sages. Let heaven be ascended, O brāhmaṇa, or what pleases you, O sinless one?)
Certainly, O best of sages, your body must be abandoned. O brāhmaṇa, ascend to heaven, or do whatever pleases you, O sinless one.
ब्राह्मण उवाच॥

na rocaye svargavāsaṃ vinā dehādahaṃ vibho। gaccha dharma na me śraddhā svargaṃ gantuṃ vinātmanā ॥12-192-24॥
[न (na) - not; रोचये (rocaye) - I desire; स्वर्गवासं (svargavāsaṃ) - residence in heaven; विना (vinā) - without; देहात् (dehāt) - from the body; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; विभो (vibho) - O Lord; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; धर्म (dharma) - O righteous one; न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; श्रद्धा (śraddhā) - faith; स्वर्गं (svargaṃ) - heaven; गन्तुं (gantuṃ) - to go; विना (vinā) - without; आत्मना (ātmanā) - with the self;]
(Not I desire residence in heaven without (leaving) the body, O Lord. Go, O righteous one, not my faith (is there) to go to heaven without the self.)
O Lord, I do not desire residence in heaven by leaving the body. Go, O righteous one; I have no faith in going to heaven without the self.

alaṃ dehe manaḥ kṛtvā tyaktvā dehaṃ sukhī bhava। gaccha lokānarajaso yatra gatvā na śocasi ॥12-192-25॥
[अलं (alaṃ) - enough; देहे (dehe) - in the body; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; देहं (dehaṃ) - body; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; भव (bhava) - be; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अरजसः (arajasaḥ) - free from impurity; यत्र (yatra) - where; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; न (na) - not; शोचसि (śocasi) - you grieve;]
(Enough in the body, having made the mind (so), having abandoned the body, be happy. Go to the worlds free from impurity, where, having gone, you do not grieve.)
Enough of this attachment to the body; steady your mind, abandon the body, and be happy. Go to the pure worlds, where, once you arrive, you will not grieve.

[रमे (rame) - O Rame; (vocative, addressing Rāma); जपन् (japan) - reciting; muttering; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O highly fortunate one; (vocative); कृतं (kṛtam) - done; accomplished; लोकैः (lokaiḥ) - by the worlds; by people; सनातनैः (sanātanaiḥ) - eternal; ancient; सशरीरेण (saśarīreṇa) - with the body; in the body; गन्तव्यः (gantavyaḥ) - to be gone; to be reached; मया (mayā) - by me; स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; न (na) - not; वा (vā) - or; विभो (vibho) - O Lord; (vocative, addressing);]
(O Rame, reciting, O highly fortunate one, done by the worlds, by the eternal ones; with the body, to be gone by me, heaven or not, O Lord.)
O Rame, O highly fortunate one, what has been accomplished by the eternal worlds—whether I must go to heaven with this body or not, O Lord.

[यदि (yadi) - if; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; न (na) - not; इच्छसि (icchasi) - desire; त्यक्तुम् (tyaktum) - to abandon; शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; पश्य (paśya) - see; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विज (dvija) - twice-born (Brahmin); एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; कालः (kālaḥ) - time (death); तथा (tathā) - also; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama (god of death); च (ca) - and; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; उपागताः (upāgatāḥ) - have approached;]
(If you do not desire to abandon the body, see, O twice-born, this is time, also death and Yama have approached you.)
If you do not wish to give up your body, O Brahmin, behold—time, death, and Yama himself have come for you.

अथ वैवस्वतः कालो मृत्युश्च त्रितयं विभो। ब्राह्मणं तं महाभागमुपागम्येदमब्रुवन् ॥१२-१९२-२८॥
atha vaivasvataḥ kālo mṛtyuś ca tritayaṃ vibho। brāhmaṇaṃ taṃ mahābhāgam upāgamyedam abruvan ॥12-192-28॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वैवस्वतः (vaivasvataḥ) - son of Vivasvat; कालः (kālaḥ) - Time; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - Death; च (ca) - and; त्रितयम् (tritayam) - the trio; विभो (vibho) - O lord; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - the Brāhmaṇa; तम् (tam) - him; महाभागम् (mahābhāgam) - greatly fortunate; उपागम्य (upāgamya) - having approached; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they said;]
(Then Vaivasvata (Yama), Time, and Death—the trio, O lord—having approached that greatly fortunate Brāhmaṇa, said this.)

तपसोऽस्य सुतप्तस्य तथा सुचरितस्य च। फलप्राप्तिस्तव श्रेष्ठा यमोऽहं त्वामुपब्रुवे ॥१२-१९२-२९॥
tapasो'sya sutaptasya tathā sucaritasya ca। phalaprāptistava śreṣṭhā yamo'haṃ tvāmupabruve ॥12-192-29॥
[तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; अस्य (asya) - of this; सुतप्तस्य (sutaptasya) - well-performed (austerity); तथा (tathā) - and also; सुचरितस्य (sucaritasya) - of good conduct; च (ca) - and; फलप्राप्तिः (phalaprāptiḥ) - attainment of fruit; तव (tava) - your; श्रेष्ठा (śreṣṭhā) - the best; यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; उपब्रुवे (upabruve) - I declare;]
(Of austerity, of this, of well-performed (austerity), and also of good conduct and, attainment of fruit, your, the best, Yama, I, to you, I declare.)
O Yama, I declare to you: the best attainment of fruit for your austerity, well-performed and good conduct.
यथावदस्य जप्यस्य फलं प्राप्तस्त्वमुत्तमम्। कालस्ते स्वर्गमारोढुं कालोऽहं त्वामुपागतः ॥१२-१९२-३०॥
yathāvad asya japyasya phalaṃ prāptas tvam uttamam। kālas te svargam āroḍhuṃ kālo'ham tvām upāgataḥ॥12-192-30॥
[यथावत् (yathāvat) - as is proper; in due manner; अस्य (asya) - of this; जप्यस्य (japyasya) - of the muttering (recitation); फलं (phalam) - fruit; result; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - obtained; त्वम् (tvam) - you; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - highest; best; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; death; ते (te) - for you; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; आरोढुम् (āroḍhum) - to ascend; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; death; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; उपागतः (upāgataḥ) - have approached; have come;]
(As is proper, of this muttering's fruit you have obtained the highest; time for you to ascend to heaven, I, Time, have come to you.)
You have duly obtained the highest fruit of this recitation; now is the time for you to ascend to heaven, and I, Time, have come for you.
मृत्युं मा विद्धि धर्मज्ञ रूपिणं स्वयमागतम्। कालेन चोदितं विप्र त्वामितो नेतुमद्य वै ॥१२-१९२-३१॥
mṛtyuṃ mā viddhi dharmajña rūpiṇaṃ svayamāgatam। kālena coditaṃ vipra tvāmito netumadya vai ॥12-192-31॥
[मृत्युं (mṛtyum) - death; (object) मा (mā) - me; (to me) विद्धि (viddhi) - know; (imperative) धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; रूपिणं (rūpiṇam) - in the form; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived; कालेन (kālena) - by time; चोदितं (coditaṃ) - impelled; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; नेतुम् (netum) - to lead; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Know me as death, O knower of dharma, arrived in form myself, impelled by time, O brāhmaṇa, to lead you from here today indeed.)
O knower of dharma, know me as death itself, who has come in person, sent by time, O brāhmaṇa, to take you from here today indeed.

(Welcome to the son of the Sun, to Time, and to the great-souled one, to Death and then to Dharma. What action shall I do for you?)

arghyaṃ pādyaṃ ca dattvā sa tebhya statra samāgame। abravīt paramaprītaḥ svaśaktyā kiṃ karomi vaḥ ॥12-192-33॥
[अर्घ्यं (arghyaṃ) - offering of water;, पाद्यं (pādyaṃ) - water for washing feet;, च (ca) - and;, दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given;, सः (saḥ) - he;, तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - to them;, तत्र (tatra) - there;, समागमे (samāgame) - at the meeting;, अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said;, परमप्रीतः (paramaprītaḥ) - extremely pleased;, स्वशक्त्या (svaśaktyā) - according to his ability;, किं (kiṃ) - what;, करोमि (karomi) - shall I do;, वः (vaḥ) - for you;]
(Having given arghya (offering of water), pādya (water for washing feet), and (other offerings), he, there at the meeting, extremely pleased, said (to them): "According to my ability, what shall I do for you?")
After offering arghya and pādya, he, being extremely pleased at their meeting, said to them: "What can I do for you according to my ability?"
तस्मिन्नेवाथ काले तु तीर्थयात्रामुपागतः। इक्ष्वाकुरगमत्तत्र समेता यत्र ते विभो ॥१२-१९२-३४॥
tasminnevātha kāle tu tīrthayātrāmupāgataḥ। ikṣvākuragamattatra sametā yatra te vibho ॥12-192-34॥

(In that very time then, but, pilgrimage having arrived, Ikṣvāku went there, assembled where they, O Lord.)
Then, at that very time, Ikṣvāku also went on a pilgrimage to the place where they had assembled, O Lord.
सर्वानेव तु राजर्षिः सम्पूज्याभिप्रणम्य च। कुशलप्रश्नमकरोत्सर्वेषां राजसत्तमः ॥१२-१९२-३५॥
sarvāneva tu rājarṣiḥ sampūjyābhipraṇamya ca। kuśalapraśnamakarotsarveṣāṃ rājasattamaḥ ॥12-192-35॥
[सर्वान् (sarvān) - all (accusative plural masculine); एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - the royal sage; सम्पूज्य (sampūjya) - having duly honored; अभिप्रणम्य (abhipraṇamya) - having bowed down to; च (ca) - and; कुशलप्रश्नम् (kuśalapraśnam) - welfare inquiry; अकरोत् (akarot) - he did; he made; he asked; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; राजसत्तमः (rājasattamaḥ) - the best among kings;]
(The royal sage, indeed, but having duly honored all and having bowed down, made a welfare inquiry of all, the best among kings.)
But the royal sage, after duly honoring and bowing to all, asked after the welfare of everyone, O best among kings.
तस्मै सोऽथासनं दत्त्वा पाद्यमर्घ्यं तथैव च। अब्रवीद्ब्राह्मणो वाक्यं कृत्वा कुशलसंविदम् ॥१२-१९२-३६॥
tasmai so’thāsanaṃ dattvā pādyamarghyaṃ tathaiva ca। abravīdbrāhmaṇo vākyaṃ kṛtvā kuśalasaṃvidam ॥12-192-36॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; सः (saḥ) - he; अथ (atha) - then; आसनम् (āsanam) - seat; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; पाद्यम् (pādyam) - water for washing feet; अर्घ्यम् (arghyam) - offering; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having spoken; कुशलसंविदम् (kuśalasaṃvidam) - of auspicious inquiry;]
(To him, he then having given a seat, water for washing feet, and offering in the same way, the Brāhmaṇa, having spoken words of auspicious inquiry, said.)
He then offered him a seat, water for washing his feet, and the customary offering; after making words of auspicious inquiry, the Brāhmaṇa spoke.
स्वागतं ते महाराज ब्रूहि यद्यदिहेच्छसि। स्वशक्त्या किं करोमीह तद्भवान्प्रब्रवीतु मे ॥१२-१९२-३७॥
svāgataṃ te mahārāja brūhi yadyad ihecchasi। svaśaktyā kiṃ karomīha tad bhavān prabravītu me ॥12-192-37॥

(Welcome to you, O great king, speak whatever here you desire. With my own power, what shall I do here, that your honor may declare to me.)
Welcome, O great king! Please tell me whatever you desire here. I will do whatever I can with my own ability—let your honor declare it to me.

rājāhaṃ brāhmaṇaś ca tvaṃ yadi ṣaṭkarma-saṃsthitaḥ। dadāmi vasu kiñcit te prārthitaṃ tad vadasva me॥12-192-38॥

(Battle my always speech asks thus you boast. Not and battle by me together with for what reason do you ask again.)
You always boast that your speech asks for battle with me. Yet, why do you ask again for battle with me?

(Speech is the thunderbolt, Brāhmaṇas are called (so); Kṣatriyas live by the arm. This is that intense battle of words, O Brāhmaṇa, together with you, mine.)
Brāhmaṇas are said to have speech as their thunderbolt, while Kṣatriyas live by their arms. This is a fierce battle of words between you and me, O Brāhmaṇa.

saivādyāpi pratijñā me svaśaktyā kiṃ pradīyatām। brūhi dāsyāmi rājendra vibhave sati māciram ॥12-192-46॥

(She indeed, even today, my promise, by own power, what should be given, tell; I will give, O king, when prosperity is present, do not delay.)

(Which that hundred years complete recitation indeed by reciting by you fruit obtained that give to me wishing to give you if.)
If you, wishing to give, have obtained the fruit of that complete recitation for a hundred years, then give that to me.

paramaṃ gṛhyatāṃ tasya phalaṃ yajjapitaṃ mayā। ardhaṃ tvam avicāreṇa phalaṃ tasya samāpnuhi॥12-192-48॥
[परमं (paramam) - supreme; गृह्यतां (gṛhyatām) - let it be accepted; तस्य (tasya) - of that; फलं (phalam) - fruit; यत् (yat) - which; जपितं (japitam) - has been recited; मया (mayā) - by me; अर्धं (ardham) - half; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अविचारेण (avicāreṇa) - without consideration; फलं (phalam) - fruit; तस्य (tasya) - of that; समाप्नुहि (samāpnuhi) - attain;]
(Let the supreme fruit of that which has been recited by me be accepted. You, without consideration, attain half the fruit of that.)
Let the supreme fruit of what I have recited be accepted. Without any deliberation, you receive half the fruit of that.
अथ वा सर्वमेवेह जप्यकं मामकं फलम्। राजन्प्राप्नुहि कामं त्वं यदि सर्वमिहेच्छसि ॥१२-१९२-४९॥

All that was to be done has been accomplished by everyone; the auspicious recitation you requested from me is complete. May well-being be yours; I shall depart now. Tell me, what is the result of that (recitation)?

नाभिसन्धिर्मया जप्ये कृतपूर्वः कथञ्चन। जप्यस्य राजशार्दूल कथं ज्ञास्याम्यहं फलम् ॥१२-१९२-५४॥

अथैवं वदतो मेऽद्य वचनं न करिष्यसि। महानधर्मो भविता तव राजन्मृषाकृतः ॥१२-१९२-५६॥
athai vaṃ vadato me'dya vacanaṃ na kariṣyasi। mahānadharmo bhavitā tava rājanmṛṣākṛtaḥ ॥12-192-56॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; वदतः (vadataḥ) - of (one) speaking; मे (me) - my; of me; अद्य (adya) - today; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; speech; न (na) - not; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - you will do; महान् (mahān) - great; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; non-dharma; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; तव (tava) - your; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मृषा (mṛṣā) - false; in vain; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; made;]
(Now thus, of (one) speaking my today word not you will do. Great unrighteousness will be your, O king, false done.)
If today you do not act according to my word as I speak, O king, then a great unrighteousness, a false deed, will be yours.
न युक्तं तु मृषा वाणी त्वया वक्तुमरिंदम। तथा मयाप्यभ्यधिकं मृषा वक्तुं न शक्यते ॥१२-१९२-५७॥
na yuktaṃ tu mṛṣā vāṇī tvayā vaktumariṃdama। tathā mayāpyabhyadhikaṃ mṛṣā vaktuṃ na śakyate ॥12-192-57॥
[न (na) - not; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - proper; तु (tu) - but; मृषा (mṛṣā) - false; वाणी (vāṇī) - speech; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; मया (mayā) - by me; अपि (api) - also; अभ्यधिकं (abhyadhikaṃ) - excessively; मृषा (mṛṣā) - false; वक्तुं (vaktuṃ) - to speak; न (na) - not; शक्यते (śakyate) - is possible;]
(Not proper but false speech by you to speak, O subduer of enemies; in the same way by me also excessively false to speak is not possible.)
O subduer of enemies, it is not proper for you to speak false words; likewise, it is not possible for me to speak excessively false words.
संश्रुतं च मया पूर्वं ददानीत्यविचारितम्। तद्गृह्णीष्वाविचारेण यदि सत्ये स्थितो भवान् ॥१२-१९२-५८॥
saṃśrutaṃ ca mayā pūrvaṃ dadānīty avicāritam। tad gṛhṇīṣv āvicāreṇa yadi satye sthito bhavān॥12-192-58॥
[संश्रुतं (saṃśrutam) - well-promised; च (ca) - and; मया (mayā) - by me; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - previously; ददानी (dadāni) - I give; इति (iti) - thus; अविचारितम् (avicāritam) - without consideration; तत् (tat) - that; गृह्णीष्व (gṛhṇīṣva) - accept; अविचारेण (avicāreṇa) - without consideration; यदि (yadi) - if; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - established; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
(Well-promised and by me previously 'I give' thus without consideration. That accept without consideration if in truth established you.)
I had previously promised without consideration, saying 'I give.' If you are truly established in truth, then accept that without hesitation.
इहागम्य हि मां राजञ्जाप्यं फलमयाचिथाः। तन्मन्निसृष्टं गृह्णीष्व भव सत्ये स्थिरोऽपि च ॥१२-१९२-५९॥
ihāgamya hi māṃ rājanjāpyaṃ phalamayācithāḥ। tanmannisṛṣṭaṃ gṛhṇīṣva bhava satye sthiro'pi ca ॥12-192-59॥
[इह (iha) - here; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; हि (hi) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; जाप्यम् (jāpyaṃ) - recitation; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; अयाचिथाः (ayācithāḥ) - you have asked; तत् (tat) - that; मत् (mat) - from me; निसृष्टम् (nisṛṣṭam) - given; गृह्णीष्व (gṛhṇīṣva) - accept; भव (bhava) - be; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; स्थिरः (sthiraḥ) - firm; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and;]
(Here, having come indeed to me, O king, you have asked for the fruit of recitation. That, given by me, accept; be firm in truth also and.)
O king, having come here to me, you have indeed asked for the fruit of the recitation. Therefore, accept what I have given; and remain steadfast in truth.
नायं लोकोऽस्ति न परो न च पूर्वान्स तारयेत्। कुत एवावरान्राजन्मृषावादपरायणः ॥१२-१९२-६०॥
nāyaṃ loko'sti na paro na ca pūrvāns tārayet. kuta evāvarān rājan mṛṣāvāda-parāyaṇaḥ ॥12-192-60॥
[न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world; अस्ति (asti) - exists; न (na) - not; परः (paraḥ) - other (world); न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पूर्वान् (pūrvān) - ancestors; स (sa) - he; तारयेत् (tārayet) - would deliver; कुतः (kutaḥ) - whence; एव (eva) - indeed; अवरान् (avarān) - inferior (ones); राजन् (rājan) - O king; मृषावाद (mṛṣāvāda) - false speech; परायणः (parāyaṇaḥ) - devoted to;]
(Not this world exists, not the other, nor would he deliver the ancestors; whence indeed (would he deliver) the inferior ones, O king, one devoted to false speech.)
O king, one who is devoted to falsehood does not attain this world, nor the next, nor can he save his ancestors; how then could he possibly save the lesser ones?
न यज्ञाध्ययने दानं नियमास्तारयन्ति हि। तथा सत्यं परे लोके यथा वै पुरुषर्षभ ॥१२-१९२-६१॥
na yajñādhyayane dānaṃ niyamās tārayanti hi। tathā satyaṃ pare loke yathā vai puruṣarṣabha ॥12-192-61॥
[न (na) - not; यज्ञाध्ययने (yajñādhyayane) - sacrifice and study; दानं (dānam) - gift; नियमाः (niyamāḥ) - observances; तारयन्ति (tārayanti) - cause to cross over; हि (hi) - indeed; तथा (tathā) - so; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; परे (pare) - in the other; लोके (loke) - world; यथा (yathā) - as; वै (vai) - indeed; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men;]
(Not sacrifice, study, gift, or observances indeed cause one to cross over; so, truth in the other world, as indeed, O best of men.)
O best of men, in the other world, it is not sacrifice, study, gift, or observances that lead one across, but truth alone.
तपांसि यानि चीर्णानि चरिष्यसि च यत्तपः। समाः शतैः सहस्रैश्च तत्सत्यान्न विशिष्यते ॥१२-१९२-६२॥
tapāṃsi yāni cīrṇāni cariṣyasi ca yat tapaḥ। samāḥ śataiḥ sahasraiś ca tat satyān na viśiṣyate ॥12-192-62॥
[तपांसि (tapāṃsi) - austerities; यानि (yāni) - which; चीर्णानि (cīrṇāni) - have been performed; चरिष्यसि (cariṣyasi) - you will perform; च (ca) - and; यत्तपः (yat tapaḥ) - whatever austerity; समाः (samāḥ) - years; शतैः (śataiḥ) - by hundreds; सहस्रैः (sahasraiḥ) - by thousands; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; सत्यात् (satyāt) - from truth; न (na) - not; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - excels;]
(Austerities which have been performed, and those you will perform, whatever austerity, for hundreds and thousands of years, that does not excel truth.)
No austerity, whether performed or to be performed, even for hundreds or thousands of years, surpasses truth.
सत्यमेकाक्षरं ब्रह्म सत्यमेकाक्षरं तपः। सत्यमेकाक्षरो यज्ञः सत्यमेकाक्षरं श्रुतम् ॥१२-१९२-६३॥
satyam-ekākṣaraṃ brahma satyam-ekākṣaraṃ tapaḥ। satyam-ekākṣaro yajñaḥ satyam-ekākṣaraṃ śrutam ॥12-192-63॥

(Truth, the one-syllabled, is Brahman; truth, the one-syllabled, is austerity; truth, the one-syllabled, is sacrifice; truth, the one-syllabled, is the Veda.)
Truth, represented by the single syllable, is Brahman; truth, the single syllable, is austerity; truth, the single syllable, is sacrifice; truth, the single syllable, is the Veda.
सत्यं वेदेषु जागर्ति फलं सत्ये परं स्मृतम्। सत्याद्धर्मो दमश्चैव सर्वं सत्ये प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥१२-१९२-६४॥

(Truth in the Vedas awakens; fruit in truth is supreme, is remembered. From truth, righteousness and self-restraint indeed; all is established in truth.)

सत्यं वेदास्तथाङ्गानि सत्यं यज्ञस्तथा विधिः। व्रतचर्यास्तथा सत्यमोङ्कारः सत्यमेव च ॥१२-१९२-६५॥

(Truth, the Vedas, likewise the limbs, truth, sacrifice, likewise the procedure, observances of vows, likewise truth, the syllable Om, truth indeed and.)
Truth is the foundation of the Vedas and their limbs; truth is the basis of sacrifice and its procedure; the observance of vows, the syllable Om, and indeed everything rests on truth.
प्राणिनां जननं सत्यं सत्यं सन्ततिरेव च। सत्येन वायुरभ्येति सत्येन तपते रविः ॥१२-१९२-६६॥
prāṇināṃ jananaṃ satyaṃ satyaṃ santatir-eva ca। satyena vāyur-abhyeti satyena tapate raviḥ ॥12-192-66॥
[प्राणिनां (prāṇināṃ) - of living beings; जननं (jananam) - birth; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; सन्ततिः (santatiḥ) - continuation; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; अभ्येति (abhyeti) - approaches; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; तपते (tapate) - shines; रविः (raviḥ) - sun;]
(Of living beings, birth is truth, truth is indeed continuation and. By truth, wind approaches, by truth, the sun shines.)
The birth of living beings is founded on truth, and so is their continuation. By truth, the wind moves and the sun shines.
सत्येन चाग्निर्दहति स्वर्गः सत्ये प्रतिष्ठितः। सत्यं यज्ञस्तपो वेदाः स्तोभा मन्त्राः सरस्वती ॥१२-१९२-६७॥
satyena cāgnirdahati svargaḥ satye pratiṣṭhitaḥ। satyaṃ yajñastapo vedāḥ stobhā mantrāḥ sarasvatī ॥12-192-67॥

(By truth, indeed, fire burns; heaven is established in truth. Truth is sacrifice, austerity, the Vedas, chants, mantras, Sarasvati.)
It is by truth that fire burns, and heaven is established upon truth. Truth is the foundation of sacrifice, austerity, the Vedas, chants, mantras, and Sarasvati.
तुलामारोपितो धर्मः सत्यं चैवेति नः श्रुतम्। समां कक्षां धारयतो यतः सत्यं ततोऽधिकम् ॥१२-१९२-६८॥
tulāmāropito dharmaḥ satyaṃ caiveti naḥ śrutam। samāṃ kakṣāṃ dhārayato yataḥ satyaṃ tato'dhikam ॥12-192-68॥
[तुला (tulā) - balance; (scales; आरोपितः (āropitaḥ) - placed; (set; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - to us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - has been heard; समां (samām) - equal; कक्षां (kakṣām) - weight; धारयतः (dhārayataḥ) - of one who holds; यतः (yataḥ) - because; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; अधिकम् (adhikam) - greater; १२-१९२-६८ (12-192-68) - 12-192-68;]
(Righteousness placed on the balance and truth, thus, we have heard. Of one who holds equal weight, because truth is greater than that.)

(From where there is righteousness, from that there is truth; all grows by truth. For what reason do you, O king, wish to perform an action of falsehood?)
Where there is righteousness, there is truth; everything prospers through truth. O king, why do you wish to undertake an act of falsehood?
सत्ये कुरु स्थिरं भावं मा राजन्ननृतं कृथाः। कस्मात्त्वमनृतं वाक्यं देहीति कुरुषेऽशुभम् ॥१२-१९२-७०॥
satye kuru sthiraṃ bhāvaṃ mā rājan anṛtaṃ kṛthāḥ। kasmāt tvam anṛtaṃ vākyaṃ dehīti kuruṣe 'śubham ॥12-192-70॥
[सत्ये (satye) - in truth; कुरु (kuru) - make; स्थिरं (sthiram) - firm; भावं (bhāvam) - state; मा (mā) - do not; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अनृतं (anṛtam) - falsehood; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - do; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अनृतं (anṛtam) - falsehood; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; देहि (dehi) - give; इति (iti) - thus; कुरुषे (kuruṣe) - do you make; अशुभम् (aśubham) - evil;]
(In truth make firm state; do not, O king, do falsehood. Why do you make evil by saying, 'Give false speech'?)
Establish steadfastness in truth; do not, O king, commit falsehood. Why do you urge me to utter false words and thus commit evil?
यदि जप्यफलं दत्तं मया नेषिष्यसे नृप। स्वधर्मेभ्यः परिभ्रष्टो लोकाननुचरिष्यसि ॥१२-१९२-७१॥
yadi japyaphalaṃ dattaṃ mayā neṣiṣyase nṛpa। svadharmebhyaḥ paribhraṣṭo lokān anucariṣyasi ॥12-192-71॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; जप्यफलं (japyaphalam) - the fruit of recitation; दत्तं (dattam) - given; मया (mayā) - by me; नेषिष्यसे (neṣiṣyase) - you will not take; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; स्वधर्मेभ्यः (svadharmebhyaḥ) - from one's own duties; परिभ्रष्टः (paribhraṣṭaḥ) - fallen away; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अनुचरिष्यसि (anucariṣyasi) - you will wander;]
(If the fruit of recitation given by me you will not take, O king, fallen away from your own duties, you will wander the worlds.)
If you do not accept the fruit of recitation given by me, O king, having fallen away from your own duties, you will wander through the worlds.
संश्रुत्य यो न दित्सेत याचित्वा यश्च नेच्छति। उभावानृतिकावेतौ न मृषा कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१२-१९२-७२॥
saṃśrutya yo na ditset yācitvā yaś ca necchati। ubhāv ānṛtikāv etau na mṛṣā kartum arhasi॥12-192-72॥
[संश्रुत्य (saṃśrutya) - having promised; यः (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; दित्सेत् (ditset) - should give; याचित्वा (yācitvā) - having begged; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; उभौ (ubhau) - both; अनृतिकौ (anṛtikau) - untruthful; एतौ (etau) - these two; न (na) - not; मृषा (mṛṣā) - falsehood; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(Having promised, who does not give, and who, having begged, does not desire, both these two are untruthful; you ought not to act falsely.)
One who, after promising, does not give, and one who, after begging, does not wish to receive—both are untruthful; you should not act falsely.

yoddhavyaṃ rakṣitavyaṃ ca kṣatradharmaḥ kila dvija। dātāraḥ kṣatriyāḥ proktā gṛhṇīyāṃ bhavataḥ katham ॥12-192-73॥

(To be fought, to be protected, and the duty of a kṣatriya indeed, O twice-born. Givers, kṣatriyas are said (to be). How should I accept from you?)
O twice-born, it is indeed the duty of a kṣatriya to fight and to protect. Kṣatriyas are said to be givers. How can I accept (something) from you?

(Not I please you, O king, nor to your house I come. Here having come but having begged, not you accept again how?)
O king, I do not please you, nor do I come to your house. Having come here and begged, why do you not accept again?

avivādo'stu yuvayorvittaṃ māṃ dharmamāgatam। dvijo dānaphalairyukto rājā satyaphalena ca ॥12-192-75॥
[अविवादः (avivādaḥ) - absence of dispute; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; युवयोः (yuvayoḥ) - between you two; वित्तम् (vittam) - wealth; माम् (mām) - me; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - righteousness; आगतम् (āgatam) - has come; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born (brāhmaṇa); दानफलैः (dānaphalaiḥ) - with the fruits of charity; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; राजा (rājā) - the king; सत्यफलेन (satyaphalena) - with the fruit of truth; च (ca) - and;]
(Let there be absence of dispute between you two; wealth has come to me through righteousness. The twice-born is endowed with the fruits of charity, and the king with the fruit of truth.)
May there be no dispute between you two; let wealth come to me through righteousness. The brāhmaṇa is endowed with the fruits of charity, and the king with the fruit of truth.

(Know me, O king, as heaven, come myself in form. Let there be absence of dispute between you two; both of you are equal in result.)
O king, know that I myself, in this form, am heaven come to you. Let there be no dispute between you two; both of you shall receive equal reward.

(The task for me by heaven is done; go to heaven as you wish for happiness. If the brāhmaṇa desires to give, let him accept my wealth too.)
My duty to heaven is accomplished; go to heaven and enjoy happiness as you wish. If the brāhmaṇa wishes to give, let him also accept my wealth.

bālye yadi syād ajñānān mayā hastaḥ prasāritaḥ। nivṛttilakṣaṇaṃ dharmam upāse saṃhitāṃ japan ॥12-192-78॥
[बाल्ये (bālye) - in childhood; यदि (yadi) - if; स्यात् (syāt) - were; अज्ञानात् (ajñānāt) - from ignorance; मया (mayā) - by me; हस्तः (hastaḥ) - hand; प्रसारितः (prasāritaḥ) - extended; निवृत्ति-लक्षणम् (nivṛtti-lakṣaṇam) - characterized by withdrawal; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; उपासे (upāse) - I worship; संहिताम् (saṃhitām) - Saṃhitā (scripture); जपन् (japan) - reciting;]
(In childhood, if from ignorance my hand was extended, I worship dharma characterized by withdrawal, reciting the Saṃhitā.)
If, in my childhood, out of ignorance I extended my hand, now I worship the dharma characterized by renunciation, reciting the Saṃhitā.
निवृत्तं मां चिरं राजन्विप्रं लोभयसे कथम्। स्वेन कार्यं करिष्यामि त्वत्तो नेच्छे फलं नृप ॥ तपःस्वाध्यायशीलोऽहं निवृत्तश्च प्रतिग्रहात् ॥१२-१९२-७९॥
nivṛttaṃ māṃ ciraṃ rājan vipraṃ lobhayase katham। svena kāryaṃ kariṣyāmi tvatto necche phalaṃ nṛpa ॥ tapaḥsvādhyāyaśīlo'ham nivṛttaśca pratigrahāt ॥12-192-79॥

(Ceased me for a long time, O king, the Brāhmaṇa you tempt, why? By my own duty I will do, from you not I desire fruit, O king. Practiced in austerity and study I am, withdrawn and from accepting gifts.)
O king, for a long time I have ceased; why do you tempt me, a Brāhmaṇa? I will perform my duty by my own means; I do not desire any reward from you, O king. I am devoted to austerity and study, and have withdrawn from accepting gifts.

(If, O Brāhmaṇa, the excellent fruit of the recitation given by you, whatever fruit there is for us two, let that be together for us here.)

द्विजाः प्रतिग्रहे युक्ता दातारो राजवंशजाः। यदि धर्मः श्रुतो विप्र सहैव फलमस्तु नौ ॥१२-१९२-८१॥

The twice-born are engaged in receiving gifts, and the givers are of royal lineage. If righteousness has truly been heard, O Brāhmaṇa, then may the fruit of it be for both of us together.
मा वा भूत्सहभोज्यं नौ मदीयं फलमाप्नुहि। प्रतीच्छ मत्कृतं धर्मं यदि ते मय्यनुग्रहः ॥१२-१९२-८२॥

tato vikṛtaceṣṭau dvau puruṣau samupasthitau। gṛhītvānyonyamāveṣṭya kucelāvūcaturvacaḥ ॥12-192-83॥

तावुभौ भृशसन्तप्तौ राजानमिदमूचतुः। परीक्ष्यतां यथा स्याव नावामिह विगर्हितौ ॥१२-१९२-८६॥
tāvubhau bhṛśasantaptau rājānam idam ūcatuḥ. parīkṣyatāṃ yathā syāv nāvām iha vigarhitau ॥12-192-86॥

(Those two, both greatly afflicted, said this to the king: "Let it be examined so that we both may not be blameworthy here.")

अनेन धर्मप्राप्त्यर्थं शुभा दत्ता पुरानघ। धेनुर्विप्राय राजर्षे तपःस्वाध्यायशीलिने ॥१२-१९२-९१॥

(By this, for the purpose of attaining dharma, the auspicious cow was given formerly, O sinless one, to the brāhmaṇa, O royal sage, to one devoted to austerity and study of the Veda.)

ततो मे सुकृतं कर्म कृतमात्मविशुद्धये। गावौ हि कपिले क्रीत्वा वत्सले बहुदोहने ॥१२-१९२-९३॥
tato me sukṛtaṃ karma kṛtam ātmaviśuddhaye। gāvau hi kapile krītvā vatsale bahudo hane ॥12-192-93॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मे (me) - by me; सुकृतम् (sukṛtam) - good deed; कर्म (karma) - action; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done; आत्मविशुद्धये (ātmaviśuddhaye) - for self-purification; गावौ (gāvau) - two cows; हि (hi) - indeed; कपिले (kapile) - Kapila (brown-colored); क्रीत्वा (krītvā) - having bought; वत्सले (vatsale) - affectionate; बहुदोहने (bahudohane) - yielding much milk;]
(Then by me a good deed, an action, was done for self-purification. Two cows, indeed, Kapila (brown-colored), having bought, affectionate, yielding much milk.)

(They and for the livelihood by gleaning, O king, by me completely abandoned. According to rule, according to faith, that of this I again, O lord.)
O king, those means of gleaning livelihood have been completely abandoned by me. According to the prescribed rules and as per faith, I shall again do that for this, O lord.
इहाद्य वै गृहीत्वा तत्प्रयच्छे द्विगुणं फलम्। एकस्याः पुरुषव्याघ्र कः शुद्धः कोऽत्र दोषवान् ॥१२-१९२-९५॥
ihādya vai gṛhītvā tatprayacche dviguṇaṃ phalam। ekasyāḥ puruṣavyāghra kaḥ śuddhaḥ ko'tra doṣavān ॥12-192-95॥

O best of the twice-born, this water has fallen on my hand; let it be accepted equally and together; may you indeed accept it, sir.

कामक्रोधौ विद्धि नौ त्वमावाभ्यां कारितो भवान्। समेति च यदुक्तं ते समा लोकास्तवास्य च ॥१२-१९२-११४॥
kāmakrodhau viddhi nau tvamāvābhyāṃ kārito bhavān। sameti ca yaduktaṃ te samā lokāstavāsya ca ॥12-192-114॥
[काम (kāma) - desire; क्रोधौ (krodhau) - and anger; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; नौ (nau) - us (dual); त्वम् (tvam) - you; आवाभ्यां (āvābhyām) - by us (dual); कारितः (kāritaḥ) - caused; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); समेति (sameti) - attains; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - what; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - said; ते (te) - by you; समा (samā) - equal; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; तव (tava) - your; अस्य (asya) - of this; च (ca) - and;]
(Desire and anger—know (them as) us; by us you have been caused (to act), O sir. And what has been said by you, equal worlds (will be) yours and of this (one) also.)
Know that desire and anger are us; you have been made to act by us, O sir. And as you have said, equal worlds will be yours and his as well.
नायं धारयते किञ्चिज्जिज्ञासा त्वत्कृते कृता। कालो धर्मस्तथा मृत्युः कामक्रोधौ तथा युवाम् ॥१२-१९२-११५॥
nāyaṃ dhārayate kiñcijjijñāsā tvatkṛte kṛtā। kālo dharmastathā mṛtyuḥ kāmakrodhau tathā yuvām ॥12-192-115॥
[न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this (person); धारयते (dhārayate) - holds; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; जिज्ञासा (jijñāsā) - desire to know; त्वत्कृते (tvat-kṛte) - for your sake; कृता (kṛtā) - made; कालः (kālaḥ) - Time; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; तथा (tathā) - also; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - Death; काम (kāma) - Desire; क्रोधौ (krodhau) - and Anger; तथा (tathā) - also; युवाम् (yuvām) - you two;]
(This (person) does not hold any desire to know made for your sake. Time, Dharma, also Death, Desire and Anger, also you two.)
This person has no curiosity made for your sake. Time, Dharma, Death, Desire, Anger, and you two are also involved.
सर्वमन्योन्यनिकषे निघृष्टं पश्यतस्तव। गच्छ लोकाञ्जितान्स्वेन कर्मणा यत्र वाञ्छसि ॥१२-१९२-११६॥
sarvam anyonya-nikaṣe nighṛṣṭaṃ paśyataḥ tava। gaccha lokān jitān svena karmaṇā yatra vāñchasi॥12-192-116॥
[सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; अन्योन्य (anyonya) - mutually; one another; निकषे (nikaṣe) - on the touchstone; by testing; निघृष्टम् (nighṛṣṭam) - rubbed; tested; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while seeing; as you see; तव (tava) - your; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; realms; जितान् (jitān) - conquered; won; स्वेन (svena) - by your own; by oneself; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; by deed; यत्र (yatra) - where; वाञ्छसि (vāñchasi) - you desire; you wish;]
(All, mutually on the touchstone rubbed, as you see, your; go to the worlds conquered by your own action, where you desire.)
All has been mutually tested as you see, O yours; go to the worlds conquered by your own deeds, wherever you wish.

जापकानां फलावाप्तिर्मया ते सम्प्रकीर्तिता। गतिः स्थानं च लोकाश्च जापकेन यथा जिताः ॥१२-१९२-११७॥
jāpakānāṃ phalāvāptirmayā te samprakīrtitā। gatiḥ sthānaṃ ca lokāśca jāpakena yathā jitāḥ ॥12-192-117॥
[जापकानां (jāpakānāṃ) - of the chanters; फल (phala) - fruit; आवाप्तिः (āvāptiḥ) - attainment; मया (mayā) - by me; ते (te) - to you; सम्प्रकीर्तिता (samprakīrtitā) - has been fully proclaimed; गतिः (gatiḥ) - path; स्थानं (sthānaṃ) - place; च (ca) - and; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; च (ca) - and; जापकेन (jāpakena) - by the chanter; यथा (yathā) - as; जिताः (jitāḥ) - conquered;]
(Of the chanters, the attainment of fruit has by me to you been fully proclaimed. The path, the place, and the worlds as conquered by the chanter, as such.)
I have fully described to you the fruits attained by the chanters. I have also explained the path, the place, and the worlds conquered by the chanter.
प्रयाति संहिताध्यायी ब्रह्माणं परमेष्ठिनम्। अथ वाग्निं समायाति सूर्यमाविशतेऽपि वा ॥१२-१९२-११८॥
prayāti saṃhitādhyāyī brahmāṇaṃ parameṣṭhinam। atha vāgniṃ samāyāti sūryamāviśate'pi vā ॥12-192-118॥
[प्रयाति (prayāti) - goes forth; संहिता (saṃhitā) - collection; अध्यायी (adhyāyī) - reciter; ब्रह्माणं (brahmāṇam) - Brahman; परमेष्ठिनम् (parameṣṭhinam) - the Supreme Lord; अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; अग्निम् (agniṃ) - Agni; समायाति (samāyāti) - approaches; सूर्यम् (sūryam) - the Sun; आविशते (āviśate) - enters; अपि (api) - also; वा (vā) - or;]
(The reciter of the Saṃhitā goes forth to Brahman, the Supreme Lord. Then, he either approaches Agni or enters the Sun, or also (does so).)
The reciter of the Saṃhitā attains Brahman, the Supreme Lord. Then, he either approaches Agni or enters the Sun.
स तैजसेन भावेन यदि तत्राश्नुते रतिम्। गुणांस्तेषां समादत्ते रागेण प्रतिमोहितः ॥१२-१९२-११९॥
sa taijasena bhāvena yadi tatrāśnute ratim। guṇāṃsteṣāṃ samādatte rāgeṇa pratimohitaḥ ॥12-192-119॥
[स (sa) - he; तैजसेन (taijasena) - by fiery (passionate, energetic); भावेन (bhāvena) - by disposition; यदि (yadi) - if; तत्र (tatra) - there; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains; रतिम् (ratim) - pleasure; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; समादत्ते (samādatte) - takes up; रागेण (rāgeṇa) - with passion; प्रतिमोहितः (pratimohitaḥ) - utterly deluded;]
(He, by fiery disposition, if there attains pleasure, the qualities of them he takes up with passion, utterly deluded.)
If, by a passionate nature, he finds pleasure there, he adopts their qualities, being completely deluded by attachment.
एवं सोमे तथा वायौ भूम्याकाशशरीरगः। सरागस्तत्र वसति गुणांस्तेषां समाचरन् ॥१२-१९२-१२०॥
evaṃ some tathā vāyau bhūmy-ākāśa-śarīra-gaḥ। sarāgas-tatra vasati guṇāṃs-teṣāṃ samācaran ॥12-192-120॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सोमे (some) - in Soma; तथा (tathā) - likewise; वायौ (vāyau) - in Vāyu; भूमि-आकाश-शरीर-गः (bhūmi-ākāśa-śarīra-gaḥ) - one who has the body of earth and space; सरागः (sarāgaḥ) - with attachment; तत्र (tatra) - there; वसति (vasati) - dwells; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; समाचरन् (samācaran) - practicing;]
(Thus, in Soma and likewise in Vāyu, the one who has the body of earth and space, with attachment, dwells there, practicing the qualities of them.)
In this way, in Soma and likewise in Vāyu, the one whose body is composed of earth and space, with attachment, resides there, practicing their qualities.
अथ तत्र विरागी स गच्छति त्वथ संशयम्। परमव्ययमिच्छन्स तमेवाविशते पुनः ॥१२-१९२-१२१॥
atha tatra virāgī sa gacchati tvatha saṃśayam। paramavyayam icchans tam eva āviśate punaḥ ॥12-192-121॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; विरागी (virāgī) - dispassionate one; सः (saḥ) - he; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; त्वथ (tvatha) - then; संशयम् (saṃśayam) - doubt; परमव्ययम् (paramavyayam) - the supreme imperishable; इच्छन् (icchan) - desiring; तम् (tam) - him; एव (eva) - only; आविशते (āviśate) - enters; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Then there, the dispassionate one, he goes, then (again) doubt. Desiring the supreme imperishable, him only he enters again.)
Then, there, the dispassionate person proceeds, but again falls into doubt. Desiring the supreme imperishable, he enters into it once more.
अमृताच्चामृतं प्राप्तः शीतीभूतो निरात्मवान्। ब्रह्मभूतः स निर्द्वंद्वः सुखी शान्तो निरामयः ॥१२-१९२-१२२॥
amṛtāccāmṛtaṃ prāptaḥ śītībhūto nirātmavān। brahmabhūtaḥ sa nirdvaṃdvaḥ sukhī śānto nirāmayaḥ ॥12-192-122॥
[अमृतात् (amṛtāt) - from immortality; च (ca) - and; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - immortality; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; शीतीभूतः (śītībhūtaḥ) - become cool; निरात्मवान् (nirātmavān) - devoid of self; ब्रह्मभूतः (brahmabhūtaḥ) - become Brahman; सः (saḥ) - he; निर्द्वंद्वः (nirdvaṃdvaḥ) - free from dualities; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; शान्तः (śāntaḥ) - peaceful; निरामयः (nirāmayaḥ) - free from disease;]
(From immortality and immortality attained, having become cool, devoid of self, having become Brahman, he, free from dualities, happy, peaceful, free from disease.)
Having attained immortality from the immortal, becoming cool and devoid of self, he who has become Brahman is free from dualities, happy, peaceful, and free from affliction.
ब्रह्मस्थानमनावर्तमेकमक्षरसञ्ज्ञकम्। अदुःखमजरं शान्तं स्थानं तत्प्रतिपद्यते ॥१२-१९२-१२३॥
brahmasthānam-anāvartam-ekam-akṣarasañjñakam। aduḥkham-ajaram śāntam sthānam tat pratipadyate ॥12-192-123॥
[ब्रह्मस्थानम् (brahmasthānam) - Brahman-abode; अनावर्तम् (anāvartam) - non-returning; एकम् (ekam) - one; अक्षर-सञ्ज्ञकम् (akṣara-sañjñakam) - having the designation 'imperishable'; अदुःखम् (aduḥkham) - without suffering; अजरम् (ajaram) - ageless; शान्तम् (śāntam) - peaceful; स्थानम् (sthānam) - abode; तत् (tat) - that; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - is attained;]
(The Brahman-abode, non-returning, one, having the designation 'imperishable', without suffering, ageless, peaceful abode, that is attained.)
That abode of Brahman, which is non-returning, one, called 'imperishable', free from suffering, ageless, and peaceful, is attained.
चतुर्भिर्लक्षणैर्हीनं तथा षड्भिः सषोडशैः। पुरुषं समतिक्रम्य आकाशं प्रतिपद्यते ॥१२-१९२-१२४॥
caturbhir lakṣaṇair hīnaṃ tathā ṣaḍbhiḥ saṣoḍaśaiḥ। puruṣaṃ samatikramya ākāśaṃ pratipadyate ॥12-192-124॥
[चतुर्भिः (caturbhiḥ) - by four; लक्षणैः (lakṣaṇaiḥ) - with characteristics; हीनं (hīnaṃ) - devoid; तथा (tathā) - likewise; षड्भिः (ṣaḍbhiḥ) - by six; सषोडशैः (saṣoḍaśaiḥ) - with sixteen; पुरुषं (puruṣam) - the person; समतिक्रम्य (samatikramya) - having surpassed; आकाशं (ākāśam) - ether; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - attains;]
(Devoid of four characteristics, likewise by six, with sixteen, having surpassed the person, attains ether.)
When one is devoid of four characteristics, or with six or sixteen, having transcended the person, one attains the ether (space or ultimate reality).
अथ वेच्छति रागात्मा सर्वं तदधितिष्ठति। यच्च प्रार्थयते तच्च मनसा प्रतिपद्यते ॥१२-१९२-१२५॥
atha vecchati rāgātmā sarvaṃ tadadhitiṣṭhati। yac ca prārthayate tac ca manasā pratipadyate ॥12-192-125॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वेच्छति (vecchati) - desires; wishes; रागात्मा (rāgātmā) - one whose nature is passion; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; everything; तदधितिष्ठति (tad-adhitiṣṭhati) - that (he) presides over; governs; यत् (yat) - whatever; which; च (ca) - and; प्रार्थयते (prārthayate) - desires; seeks; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - attains; obtains;]
(Now, the one whose nature is passion desires, he governs all that. And whatever he desires, that he attains with the mind.)
Then, the passionate person desires and thus controls everything. Whatever he wishes for, he attains with his mind.
अथ वा वीक्षते लोकान्सर्वान्निरयसंस्थितान्। निःस्पृहः सर्वतो मुक्तस्तत्रैव रमते सुखी ॥१२-१९२-१२६॥
atha vā vīkṣate lokān sarvān nirayasaṃsthitān। niḥspṛhaḥ sarvato muktas tatraiva ramate sukhī ॥12-192-126॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; वीक्षते (vīkṣate) - sees; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; निरयसंस्थितान् (nirayasaṃsthitān) - situated in hell; निःस्पृहः (niḥspṛhaḥ) - free from desire; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - liberated; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; रमते (ramate) - delights; सुखी (sukhī) - happy;]
(Then or sees all worlds situated in hell; free from desire, liberated from all sides, right there delights, happy.)
Or, he sees all the worlds situated in hell; being free from desire and liberated from all sides, he delights right there and is happy.
एवमेषा महाराज जापकस्य गतिर्यथा। एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि ॥१२-१९२-१२७॥
evameṣā mahārāja jāpakasya gatiryathā। etatte sarvamākhyātaṃ kiṃ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi ॥12-192-127॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एषा (eṣā) - this; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; जापकस्य (jāpakasya) - of the reciter; गतिः (gatiḥ) - path; यथा (yathā) - as; एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - has been told; किम् (kim) - what; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - more; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire;]
(Thus this, O great king, is the path of the reciter as (it is). This all has been told to you. What more do you wish to hear?)
O great king, thus is the path of the reciter. All this has been explained to you. Do you wish to hear anything further?
