priyaḥ sarvasya lokasya sarvasattvābhinanditā। guṇaiḥ sarvairupetaśca ko nvasti bhuvi mānavaḥ ॥12-223-1॥

Who is there on earth, as a human, who is dear to all, welcomed by all beings, and endowed with all virtues?

अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि पृच्छतो भरतर्षभ। उग्रसेनस्य संवादं नारदे केशवस्य च ॥१२-२२३-२॥
atra te vartayiṣyāmi pṛcchato bharatarṣabha। ugrasenasya saṃvādaṃ nārade keśavasya ca ॥12-223-2॥

O best of the Bharatas, here, as you ask, I will recount to you the conversation between Ugrasena and Keśava that took place in the presence of Nārada.

पश्य सङ्कल्पते लोको नारदस्य प्रकीर्तने। मन्ये स गुणसम्पन्नो ब्रूहि तन्मम पृच्छतः ॥१२-२२३-३॥
paśya saṅkalpate loko nāradasya prakīrtane। manye sa guṇasampanno brūhi tanmama pṛcchataḥ ॥12-223-3॥

कुकुराधिप यान्मन्ये शृणु तान्मे विवक्षतः। नारदस्य गुणान्साधून्सङ्क्षेपेण नराधिप ॥१२-२२३-४॥
kukurādhipa yān manye śṛṇu tān me vivakṣataḥ। nāradasya guṇān sādhūn saṅkṣepena narādhipa ॥12-223-4॥

न चारित्रनिमित्तोऽस्याहङ्कारो देहपातनः। अभिन्नश्रुतचारित्रस्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-५॥
na cāritranimitto'syāhaṅkāro dehapātanaḥ। abhinnaśrutacāritrastas mātsarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-5॥

तपस्वी नारदो बाढं वाचि नास्य व्यतिक्रमः। कामाद्वा यदि वा लोभात्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-६॥
tapasvī nārado bāḍhaṃ vāci nāsya vyatikramaḥ। kāmādvā yadi vā lobhāttasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-6॥

(Ascetic Nārada indeed, in speech, there is not his transgression; from desire or if or from greed, therefore everywhere honored.)
The ascetic Nārada is indeed one whose speech is never transgressed; whether from desire or from greed, therefore he is honored everywhere.
अध्यात्मविधितत्त्वज्ञः क्षान्तः शक्तो जितेन्द्रियः। ऋजुश्च सत्यवादी च तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-७॥
adhyātmavidhitattvajñaḥ kṣāntaḥ śakto jitendriyaḥ। ṛjuśca satyavādī ca tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-7॥

(One who knows the principle and method of the self, is forbearing, capable, has conquered the senses, is upright and a speaker of truth, therefore is honored everywhere.)
He who knows the principle and method of the self, is patient, capable, self-controlled, upright, and truthful, is therefore honored everywhere.
तेजसा यशसा बुद्ध्या नयेन विनयेन च। जन्मना तपसा वृद्धस्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-८॥
tejasā yaśasā buddhyā nayena vinayena ca। janmanā tapasā vṛddhastasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-8॥

(By brilliance, by fame, by intellect, by policy, by humility, and by birth, by austerity, an elder, therefore, everywhere, honored.)
An elder who possesses brilliance, fame, intellect, policy, humility, birth, and austerity is therefore honored everywhere.
सुखशीलः सुसम्भोगः सुभोज्यः स्वादरः शुचिः। सुवाक्यश्चाप्यनीर्ष्यश्च तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-९॥
sukhaśīlaḥ susambhogaḥ subhojyaḥ svādaraḥ śuciḥ। suvākyaścāpyanīrṣyaśca tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-9॥
[सुखशीलः (sukhaśīlaḥ) - of happy nature; सुसम्भोगः (susambhogaḥ) - having good enjoyment; सुभोज्यः (subhojyaḥ) - easily enjoyable; स्वादरः (svādaraḥ) - with respect; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; सुवाक्यः (suvākyaḥ) - of good speech; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनीर्ष्यः (anīrṣyaḥ) - without envy; च (ca) - and; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored;]
(Of happy nature, having good enjoyment, easily enjoyable, with respect, pure, of good speech and also without envy and therefore everywhere honored.)
One who is of happy nature, enjoys well, is pleasant to be with, respectful, pure, speaks well, is free from envy, and therefore is honored everywhere.
कल्यानं कुरुते बाढं पापमस्मिन्न विद्यते। न प्रीयते परानर्थैस्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-१०॥
kalyānaṃ kurute bāḍhaṃ pāpamasminna vidyate। na prīyate parānarthaistasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-10॥
[कल्यानम् (kalyānam) - welfare; benefit; auspiciousness; कुरुते (kurute) - does; performs; बाढम् (bāḍham) - certainly; indeed; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; evil; अस्मिन्न (asmin) - in this (person); न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; न (na) - not; प्रीयते (prīyate) - is pleased; delights; परानर्थैः (parānarthaiḥ) - by others' misfortunes; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - is honored; is respected;]
(Welfare does certainly; sin in this (person) does not exist; is not pleased by others' misfortunes; therefore everywhere is honored;)
He certainly does good; there is no sin in him; he does not delight in the misfortunes of others; therefore, he is honored everywhere.
वेदश्रुतिभिराख्यानैरर्थानभिजिगीषते। तितिक्षुरनवज्ञश्च तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-११॥
vedaśrutibhir ākhyānair arthān abhijigīṣate. titikṣur anavajñaś ca tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-11॥
[वेदश्रुतिभिः (vedaśrutibhiḥ) - by the Veda-hearings; आख्यानैः (ākhyānaiḥ) - by the narratives; अर्थान् (arthān) - meanings; अभिजिगीषते (abhijigīṣate) - desires to conquer; तितिक्षुः (titikṣuḥ) - the patient one; अनवज्ञः (anavajñaḥ) - not contemptuous; च (ca) - and; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored;]
(By the Veda-hearings and narratives, he desires to conquer the meanings. The patient one, not contemptuous, and therefore, everywhere honored.)
He seeks to understand the meanings through Vedic teachings and stories. Because he is patient and without contempt, he is honored everywhere.
समत्वाद्धि प्रियो नास्ति नाप्रियश्च कथञ्चन। मनोनुकूलवादी च तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-१२॥
samatvāddhi priyo nāsti nāpriyaśca kathañcana। manonukūlavādī ca tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-12॥
[समत्वात् (samatvāt) - from equanimity; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear one; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - exists; न (na) - not; अप्रियः (apriyaḥ) - unpleasant one; च (ca) - and; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; अनुकूलवादी (anukūlavādī) - one who speaks agreeably; च (ca) - and; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored;]
(From equanimity indeed dear one does not exist, nor unpleasant one in any way; one who speaks agreeably to the mind, therefore, is honored everywhere.)
Because of equanimity, there is neither anyone especially dear nor anyone especially disliked in any way; therefore, one who speaks agreeably to the mind is honored everywhere.
बहुश्रुतश्चैत्रकथः पण्डितोऽनलसोऽशठः। अदीनोऽक्रोधनोऽलुब्धस्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-१३॥
bahuśrutaś caitrakathaḥ paṇḍito'nalaso'śaṭhaḥ। adīno'krodhano'lubdhas tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-13॥
[बहुश्रुतः (bahuśrutaḥ) - much-heard; learned; च (ca) - and; ऐत्रकथः (caitrakathaḥ) - having stories of Chaitra; पण्डितः (paṇḍitaḥ) - wise; scholar; अनलसः (analasaḥ) - not lazy; अशठः (aśaṭhaḥ) - not deceitful; अदीनः (adīnaḥ) - not miserable; अक्रोधनः (akrodhanaḥ) - not angry; अलुब्धः (alubdhaḥ) - not greedy; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored;]
(Much-heard and having stories of Chaitra, wise, not lazy, not deceitful, not miserable, not angry, not greedy, therefore everywhere honored.)
One who is learned, versed in stories, wise, energetic, honest, content, calm, and free from greed is therefore honored everywhere.
नार्थे न धर्मे कामे वा भूतपूर्वोऽस्य विग्रहः। दोषाश्चास्य समुच्छिन्नास्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-१४॥
nārtʰe na dʰarme kāme vā bhūtapūrvō'sya vigrahaḥ। dōṣāś cāsya samucchinnās tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-14॥
[न (na) - not; अर्थे (arthe) - in wealth; न (na) - not; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; कामे (kāme) - in desire; वा (vā) - or; भूतपूर्वः (bhūtapūrvaḥ) - previously occurred; अस्य (asya) - of him; विग्रहः (vigrahaḥ) - conflict; दोषाः (doṣāḥ) - faults; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; समुच्छिन्नाः (samucchinnāḥ) - completely removed; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored;]
(Not in wealth, not in righteousness, nor in desire has there previously been conflict for him. And his faults are completely removed; therefore, he is honored everywhere.)

दृढभक्तिरनिन्द्यात्मा श्रुतवाननृशंसवान्। वीतसंमोहदोषश्च तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-१५॥
dṛḍhabhaktiranindyātmā śrutavānanṛśaṃsavān। vītasammohadoṣaśca tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-15॥

(Firm in devotion, blameless in self, learned, not cruel, free from the fault of delusion, and therefore honored everywhere.)

असक्तः सर्वसङ्गेषु सक्तात्मेव च लक्ष्यते। अदीर्घसंशयो वाग्मी तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-१६॥

One who remains unattached in all associations, yet whose mind is sometimes seen to be attached, who is free from prolonged doubts and eloquent, is therefore honored everywhere.
समाधिर्नास्य मानार्थे नात्मानं स्तौति कर्हिचित्। अनीर्ष्युर्दृढसम्भाषस्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-१७॥
samādhir nāsya mānārthe nātmānaṃ stauti karhicit| anīrṣyur dṛḍhasambhāṣas tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-17॥

(Concentration is not for him for the sake of pride; he never praises himself at any time. Free from envy, firm in speech, therefore he is honored everywhere.)

लोकस्य विविधं वृत्तं प्रकृतेश्चाप्यकुत्सयन्। संसर्गविद्याकुशलस्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-१८॥
lokasya vividhaṃ vṛttaṃ prakṛteścāpyakutsayan। saṃsargavidyākuśalastas mātsarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-18॥

कृतश्रमः कृतप्रज्ञो न च तृप्तः समाधितः। नियमस्थोऽप्रमत्तश्च तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-२०॥
kṛtaśramaḥ kṛtaprajño na ca tṛptaḥ samādhitaḥ। niyamastho'pramattaśca tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-20॥

(One who has exerted, one who has attained wisdom, and not satisfied, absorbed in concentration, established in discipline, not negligent and therefore honored everywhere.)
One who has made effort, gained wisdom, is not content, is absorbed in meditation, established in discipline, and is vigilant, is therefore honored everywhere.
सापत्रपश्च युक्तश्च सुनेयः श्रेयसे परैः। अभेत्ता परगुह्यानां तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-२१॥
sāpatrapaś ca yuktaś ca suneyaḥ śreyase paraiḥ। abhettā paraguhyānāṃ tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ॥12-223-21॥
[सापत्रपः (sāpatrapaḥ) - ashamed; च (ca) - and; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; च (ca) - and; सुनेयः (suneyaḥ) - well-conducted; श्रेयसे (śreyase) - for welfare; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others; अभेत्ता (abhettā) - not a betrayer; परगुह्यानाम् (paraguhyānām) - of others' secrets; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored;]
(Ashamed and endowed, well-conducted for welfare by others, not a betrayer of others' secrets, therefore everywhere honored.)
He who is ashamed, endowed, well-conducted for the welfare of others, does not betray others' secrets; therefore, he is honored everywhere.
न हृष्यत्यर्थलाभेषु नालाभेषु व्यथत्यपि। स्थिरबुद्धिरसक्तात्मा तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२-२२३-२२॥
na hṛṣyaty arthalābheṣu nālābheṣu vyathaty api। sthirabuddhir asaktātmā tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ ॥12-223-22॥
[न (na) - not; हृष्यति (hṛṣyati) - rejoices; अर्थलाभेषु (arthalābheṣu) - in gains of wealth; न (na) - not; अलाभेषु (alābheṣu) - in losses; व्यथति (vyathati) - is distressed; अपि (api) - even; स्थिरबुद्धिः (sthirabuddhiḥ) - one whose intellect is steady; असक्तात्मा (asaktātmā) - one whose self is unattached; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - is honored;]
(Not rejoices in gains of wealth, not is distressed even in losses; one whose intellect is steady, whose self is unattached, therefore everywhere is honored.)
He neither rejoices in the gain of wealth nor is distressed by its loss; with a steady intellect and unattached self, therefore, he is honored everywhere.
तं सर्वगुणसम्पन्नं दक्षं शुचिमकातरम्। कालज्ञं च नयज्ञं च कः प्रियं न करिष्यति ॥१२-२२३-२३॥
taṃ sarvaguṇasampannaṃ dakṣaṃ śucimakātaram। kālajñaṃ ca nayajñaṃ ca kaḥ priyaṃ na kariṣyati ॥12-223-23॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; सर्वगुणसम्पन्नं (sarvaguṇasampannaṃ) - endowed with all virtues; दक्षं (dakṣaṃ) - skilful; शुचिम् (śucim) - pure; अकातरम् (akātaram) - undaunted; कालज्ञम् (kālajñam) - knower of time; च (ca) - and; नयज्ञम् (nayajñam) - knower of policy; च (ca) - and; कः (kaḥ) - who; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; न (na) - not; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will make (as);]

Who would not hold dear one who is endowed with all virtues, skilful, pure, undaunted, a knower of time and policy?
