Sthāṇu (the immovable one) said.
प्रजासर्गनिमित्तं मे कार्यवत्तामिमां प्रभो। विद्धि सृष्टास्त्वया हीमा मा कुप्यासां पितामह ॥१२-२४९-१॥
prajāsarganimittaṃ me kāryavattāmimāṃ prabho। viddhi sṛṣṭāstvayā hīmā mā kupyāsāṃ pitāmaha ॥12-249-1॥
[प्रजा (prajā) - offspring; सर्ग (sarga) - creation; निमित्तं (nimittaṃ) - for the sake of; मे (me) - my; कार्यवत्ताम् (kāryavattām) - effectiveness; इमां (imām) - this; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; सृष्टाः (sṛṣṭāḥ) - created; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हि (hi) - indeed; इमा (imā) - these; मा (mā) - do not; कुप्यासां (kupyāsāṃ) - be angry; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;]
(For the sake of the creation of offspring, O lord, know this effectiveness as mine. These have indeed been created by you. O grandsire, do not be angry.)
O lord, for the purpose of creating offspring, know that this effectiveness is mine. These beings have indeed been created by you. O grandsire, please do not be angry.
तव तेजोग्निना देव प्रजा दह्यन्ति सर्वशः। ता दृष्ट्वा मम कारुण्यं मा कुप्यासां जगत्प्रभो ॥१२-२४९-२॥
tava tejo'gninā deva prajā dahyanti sarvaśaḥ। tā dṛṣṭvā mama kāruṇyaṃ mā kupyāsāṃ jagatprabho ॥12-249-2॥

(O god, by the fire of your brilliance, creatures are being burned entirely. Seeing them, my compassion (arises); O lord of the world, do not become angry.)

Prajāpati said.
न कुप्ये न च मे कामो न भवेरन्प्रजा इति। लाघवार्थं धरण्यास्तु ततः संहार इष्यते ॥१२-२४९-३॥
na kupye na ca me kāmo na bhaveranprajā iti। lāghavārthaṃ dharaṇyāstu tataḥ saṃhāra iṣyate॥12-249-3॥
[न (na) - not; कुप्ये (kupye) - I become angry; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; न (na) - not; भवेरन् (bhaveran) - would be; प्रजा (prajā) - offspring; इति (iti) - thus; लाघवार्थम् (lāghavārtham) - for the sake of lightness; धरण्याः (dharaṇyāḥ) - of the earth; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; संहारः (saṃhāraḥ) - destruction; इष्यते (iṣyate) - is desired;]
(I do not become angry, nor is it my desire, nor would there be offspring thus. For the sake of lightness of the earth, therefore, destruction is desired.)
I am not angry, nor do I desire it, nor would there be offspring for this reason. The destruction is sought for the sake of the earth's lightness.
इयं हि मां सदा देवी भारार्ता समचोदयत्। संहारार्थं महादेव भारेणाप्सु निमज्जति ॥१२-२४९-४॥

(This indeed always the goddess, distressed by the burden, urged me. For the purpose of destruction, O great god, by the burden, (she) is sinking in the waters.)
This goddess has always urged me, being distressed by the burden. O Mahadeva, for the sake of destruction, she is sinking in the waters due to the weight.
यदाहं नाधिगच्छामि बुद्ध्या बहु विचारयन्। संहारमासां वृद्धानां ततो मां क्रोध आविशत् ॥१२-२४९-५॥
yadāhaṃ nādhigacchāmi buddhyā bahu vicārayan। saṃhāramāsāṃ vṛddhānāṃ tato māṃ krodha āviśat॥12-249-5॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; अधिगच्छामि (adhigacchāmi) - attain; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; बहु (bahu) - much; विचारयन् (vicārayan) - considering; संहारम् (saṃhāram) - destruction; असाम् (asām) - of these; वृद्धानाम् (vṛddhānām) - of the elders; ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - me; क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; आविशत् (āviśat) - entered;]
(When I do not attain (a solution) by intellect, considering much, the destruction of these elders, then anger entered me.)
Whenever I, after much consideration by intellect, could not find a solution regarding the destruction of these elders, then anger seized me.

संहारान्तं प्रसीदस्व मा क्रुधस्त्रिदशेश्वर। मा प्रजाः स्थावरं वैच जङ्गमं च विनीनशः ॥१२-२४९-६॥
saṃhārāntaṃ prasīdasva mā krudhastridaśeśvara। mā prajāḥ sthāvaraṃ vaica jaṅgamaṃ ca vinīnaśaḥ ॥12-249-6॥

(That, this, having become ashes, the whole world overwhelmed. Be gracious, O Lord, O noble one. This boon has been chosen by me.)

नष्टा न पुनरेष्यन्ति प्रजा ह्येताः कथञ्चन। तस्मान्निवर्त्यतामेतत्तेजः स्वेनैव तेजसा ॥१२-२४९-९॥
naṣṭā na punareṣyanti prajā hyetāḥ kathaṃcana। tasmānnivartyatāmetattejaḥ svenaiva tejasā ॥12-249-9॥
[नष्टाः (naṣṭāḥ) - destroyed; न (na) - not; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एष्यन्ति (eṣyanti) - will come; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; हि (hi) - indeed; एताः (etāḥ) - these; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; निवर्त्यताम् (nivartyatām) - let it be withdrawn; एतत् (etat) - this; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; स्वेन (svena) - by one's own; एव (eva) - only; तेजसा (tejasā) - by energy;]
(Destroyed not again will come creatures indeed these in any way. Therefore let it be withdrawn this energy by one's own only energy.)
These creatures, once destroyed, will not return in any way. Therefore, let this energy be withdrawn by your own energy alone.
उपायमन्यं सम्पश्य प्रजानां हितकाम्यया। यथेमे जन्तवः सर्वे निवर्तेरन्परन्तप ॥१२-२४९-१०॥
upāyam anyaṃ sampaśya prajānāṃ hitakāmyayā। yatheme jantavaḥ sarve nivarteran parantapa ॥12-249-10॥
[उपायम् (upāyam) - means; method; अन्यं (anyaṃ) - another; different; सम्पश्य (sampaśya) - consider; look for; प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of the subjects; of the people; हितकाम्यया (hitakāmyayā) - with desire for welfare; wishing for benefit; यथा (yathā) - so that; in such a way that; इमे (ime) - these; जन्तवः (jantavaḥ) - creatures; beings; सर्वे (sarve) - all; निवर्तेरन् (nivarteran) - may turn back; may desist; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
(Consider another means for the people with desire for welfare, so that all these beings may turn back, O scorcher of foes.)

अभावमभिगच्छेयुरुत्सन्नप्रजनाः प्रजाः। अधिदैवनियुक्तोऽस्मि त्वया लोकेष्विहेश्वर ॥१२-२४९-११॥

(Creatures whose progeny is destroyed would attain non-existence. I am appointed by you, O Lord, here among the worlds by higher powers.)

(Indeed, O Lord of the Universe, the world, both immobile and mobile, has originated from you. Having propitiated you, O great god, I request for beings born of rebirth.)
O Lord of the Universe, truly the world, both immobile and mobile, has arisen from you. Having propitiated you, O great god, I request for the beings who are born again through rebirth.

श्रुत्वा तु वचनं देवः स्थाणोर्नियतवाङ्मनाः। तेजस्तत्स्वं निजग्राह पुनरेवान्तरात्मना ॥१२-२४९-१३॥
śrutvā tu vacanaṃ devaḥ sthāṇorniyatavāṅmanāḥ। tejastatsvaṃ nijagrāha punarevāntarātmanā ॥12-249-13॥

(Having heard the speech, the god Sthāṇu, with controlled speech and mind, seized that energy, his own, again indeed with his inner self.)

ततोऽग्निमुपसङ्गृह्य भगवाँल्लोकपूजितः। प्रवृत्तिं च निवृत्तिं च कल्पयामास वै प्रभुः ॥१२-२४९-१४॥
tato'gnim-upasaṅgṛhya bhagavāṁ-lokapūjitaḥ। pravṛttiṁ ca nivṛttiṁ ca kalpayāmāsa vai prabhuḥ ॥12-249-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अग्निम् (agnim) - fire; उपसङ्गृह्य (upasaṅgṛhya) - having taken up; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; लोकपूजितः (lokapūjitaḥ) - honored by the world; प्रवृत्तिम् (pravṛttim) - activity; च (ca) - and; निवृत्तिम् (nivṛttim) - cessation; च (ca) - and; कल्पयामास (kalpayāmāsa) - established; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(Then, having taken up the fire, the venerable one honored by the world indeed established both activity and cessation, the lord.)

O radiant one, withdraw all beings without distinction. By my command, you will surely attain the highest good.
एवमुक्ता तु सा देवी मृत्युः कमलमालिनी। प्रदध्यौ दुःखिता बाला साश्रुपातमतीव हि ॥१२-२४९-२१॥

पाणिभ्यां चैव जग्राह तान्यश्रूणि जनेश्वरः। मानवानां हितार्थाय ययाचे पुनरेव च ॥१२-२४९-२२॥
pāṇibhyāṃ caiva jagrāha tānyaśrūṇi janeśvaraḥ। mānavānāṃ hitārthāya yayāce punareva ca ॥12-249-22॥
