वृत्रस्य तु महाराज ज्वराविष्टस्य सर्वशः। अभवन्यानि लिङ्गानि शरीरे तानि मे शृणु ॥१२-२७३-१॥
vṛtrasya tu mahārāja jvarāviṣṭasya sarvaśaḥ। abhavanyāni liṅgāni śarīre tāni me śṛṇu॥12-273-1॥

ज्वलितास्योऽभवद्घोरो वैवर्ण्यं चागमत्परम्। गात्रकम्पश्च सुमहाञ्श्वासश्चाप्यभवन्महान् ॥ रोमहर्षश्च तीव्रोऽभून्निःश्वासश्च महान्नृप ॥१२-२७३-२॥
jvalitāsyo'bhavadghoro vaivarṇyaṃ cāgamatparam। gātrakampaśca sumahāñchvāsaścāpyabhavanmahān ॥ romaharṣaśca tīvro'bhūnniḥśvāsaśca mahānnṛpa ॥12-273-2॥

शिवा चाशिवसङ्काशा तस्य वक्त्रात्सुदारुणा। निष्पपात महाघोरा स्मृतिः सा तस्य भारत ॥ उल्काश्च ज्वलितास्तस्य दीप्ताः पार्श्वे प्रपेदिरे ॥१२-२७३-३॥

गृध्रकङ्कवडाश्चैव वाचोऽमुञ्चन्सुदारुणाः। वृत्रस्योपरि संहृष्टाश्चक्रवत्परिबभ्रमुः ॥१२-२७३-४॥
gṛdhra-kaṅka-vaḍāś-caiva vāco' muñcan-sudāruṇāḥ। vṛtrasya-upari saṃhṛṣṭāś-cakravat-paribabhramuḥ॥12-273-4॥

स वज्रः सुमहातेजाः कालाग्निसदृशोपमः। क्षिप्रमेव महाकायं वृत्रं दैत्यमपातयत् ॥१२-२७३-७॥

(But having slain Vṛtra, the Lord, the enemy of the Dānavas, of great fame, with the thunderbolt empowered by Viṣṇu, indeed entered heaven.)

अथ वृत्रस्य कौरव्य शरीरादभिनिःसृता। ब्रह्महत्या महाघोरा रौद्रा लोकभयावहा ॥१२-२७३-१०॥

करालदशना भीमा विकृता कृष्णपिङ्गला। प्रकीर्णमूर्धजा चैव घोरनेत्रा च भारत ॥१२-२७३-११॥
karāladaśanā bhīmā vikṛtā kṛṣṇapiṅgalā। prakīrṇamūrdhajā caiva ghoranetrā ca bhārata ॥12-273-11॥

कपालमालिनी चैव कृशा च भरतर्षभ। रुधिरार्द्रा च धर्मज्ञ चीरवस्त्रनिवासिनी ॥१२-२७३-१२॥
kapālamālinī caiva kṛśā ca bharatarṣabha। rudhirārdrā ca dharmajña cīravastranivāsinī ॥12-273-12॥

बिसान्निःसरमाणं तु दृष्ट्वा शक्रं महौजसम्। कण्ठे जग्राह देवेन्द्रं सुलग्ना चाभवत्तदा ॥१२-२७३-१५॥
bisānniḥsaramāṇaṃ tu dṛṣṭvā śakraṃ mahaujasaṃ। kaṇṭhe jagrāha devendraṃ sulagnā cābhavattadā॥12-273-15॥

(But having seen Śakra of great energy emerging from the lotus, (she) seized the lord of the gods by the neck, and then became firmly attached.)

स हि तस्मिन्समुत्पन्ने ब्रह्महत्याकृते भये। नलिन्यां बिसमध्यस्थो बभूवाब्दगणान्बहून् ॥१२-२७३-१६॥

(He indeed, in that fear arisen caused by Brahmin-slaying, remained in the lotus-pond, situated in the midst of the lotus-stalks, for many groups of years.)
He, indeed, out of fear that arose from the act of Brahmin-slaying, stayed for many years in the lotus-pond, hidden among the lotus-stalks.
अनुसृत्य तु यत्नात्स तया वै ब्रह्महत्यया। तदा गृहीतः कौरव्य निश्चेष्टः समपद्यत ॥१२-२७३-१७॥
anusṛtya tu yatnātsa tayā vai brahmahatyayā। tadā gṛhītaḥ kauravya niśceṣṭaḥ samapadyata ॥12-273-17॥

(Having followed but with effort, he was indeed seized by her, by Brahmahatyā; then, O descendant of Kuru, he became motionless.)

तस्या व्यपोहने शक्रः परं यत्नं चकार ह। न चाशकत्तां देवेन्द्रो ब्रह्महत्यां व्यपोहितुम् ॥१२-२७३-१८॥
tasyā vyapohane śakraḥ paraṃ yatnaṃ cakāra ha। na cāśakattāṃ devendro brahmahatyāṃ vyapohitum ॥12-273-18॥

त्वया कृतेयं मर्यादा लोकसंरक्षणार्थिना। स्थापना वै सुमहती त्वया देव प्रवर्तिता ॥१२-२७३-२४॥
tvayā kṛteyaṃ maryādā lokasaṃrakṣaṇārthinā। sthāpanā vai sumahatī tvayā deva pravartitā ॥12-273-24॥

(By you, this boundary (law) was made, by the seeker of the protection of the world. Indeed, a very great establishment was set in motion by you, O god.)

प्रीते तु त्वयि धर्मज्ञ सर्वलोकेश्वरे प्रभो। शक्रादपगमिष्यामि निवासं तु विधत्स्व मे ॥१२-२७३-२५॥

tataḥ svayambhuvā dhyātastatra vahnirmahātmanā। brahmāṇamupasaṅgamya tato vacanamabravīt ॥12-273-27॥

bahudhā vibhajiṣyāmi brahmahatyām imām aham। śakrasya adya vimokṣārthaṃ caturbhāgaṃ pratīccha me ॥12-273-29॥

(In many ways I shall divide this killing of a Brāhmaṇa; for the release of Śakra today, accept a fourth part from me.)

mama mokṣasya ko'nto vai brahmaṃdhyāyasva vai prabho। etadicchāmi vijñātuṃ tattvato lokapūjita ॥12-273-30॥

(My liberation's what end indeed, O Brahman, meditate indeed, O Lord. This I wish to know in reality, O revered by the world.)
O Brahman, O Lord revered by the world, what is the end of my liberation? Please meditate and tell me this; I wish to know the truth of it.

yastvāṃ jvalantam āsādya svayaṃ vai mānavaḥ kvacit। bījauṣadhirasair vahne na yakṣyati tamovṛtaḥ ॥12-273-31॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; ज्वलन्तम् (jvalantam) - burning; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; वै (vai) - indeed; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a human; क्वचित् (kvacit) - at any time; बीजौषधिरसैः (bījauṣadhirasaiḥ) - with the juices of seeds and herbs; वह्ने (vahne) - to the fire; न (na) - not; यक्ष्यति (yakṣyati) - will offer oblation; तमोवृतः (tamovṛtaḥ) - covered by darkness;]
(Who, having approached you burning, himself indeed a human at any time, with the juices of seeds and herbs, to the fire, not will offer oblation, covered by darkness.)
Any human who, having come near you blazing, does not offer oblations to the fire with the juices of seeds and herbs at any time, being enveloped in darkness, will not perform the sacrifice.
तमेषा यास्यति क्षिप्रं तत्रैव च निवत्स्यति। ब्रह्महत्या हव्यवाह व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥१२-२७३-३२॥
tameṣā yāsyati kṣipraṃ tatraiva ca nivatsyati। brahmahatyā havyavāha vyetu te mānaso jvaraḥ ॥12-273-32॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एषा (eṣā) - this; यास्यति (yāsyati) - will go; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - there itself; च (ca) - and; निवत्स्यति (nivatsyati) - will remain; ब्रह्महत्या (brahmahatyā) - Brahmin-slaying (sin); हव्यवाह (havyavāha) - O Fire; व्येतु (vyetu) - may depart; ते (te) - your; मानसः (mānasaḥ) - mental; ज्वरः (jvaraḥ) - fever;]
(Him this will go quickly, there itself and will remain. Brahmin-slaying (sin), O Fire, may depart, your mental fever.)
This (sin) will quickly leave him and remain there itself. O Fire, may the sin of Brahmin-slaying and your mental fever depart.

(Of us, from Brāhmaṇa-slaughter, what end, O grandsire of the world? Those destroyed by their own nature, us, not again to kill you ought.)
O grandsire of the world, what end is there for us from Brāhmaṇa-slaughter? You ought not to kill us again, who have already been destroyed by our own nature.
वयमग्निं तथा शीतं वर्षं च पवनेरितम्। सहामः सततं देव तथा छेदनभेदनम् ॥१२-२७३-३७॥
vayam agniṃ tathā śītaṃ varṣaṃ ca pavaneritām। sahāmaḥ satataṃ deva tathā chedanabhedanam ॥12-273-37॥

ब्रह्महत्यामिमामद्य भवतः शासनाद्वयम्। ग्रहीष्यामस्त्रिलोकेश मोक्षं चिन्तयतां भवान् ॥१२-२७३-३८॥
brahmahatyām imām adya bhavataḥ śāsanād vayam। grahīṣyāmaḥ trilokeśa mokṣaṃ cintayatāṃ bhavān॥12-273-38॥

[पर्वकाले (parvakāle) - at the time of a festival; तु (tu) - but; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; यः (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; छेदन (chedana) - cutting; भेदनम् (bhedanam) - splitting; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do; नरः (naraḥ) - man; मोहात् (mohāt) - out of delusion; तम् (tam) - him; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; अनुगमिष्यति (anugamiṣyati) - will follow;]
(At the time of a festival, but when it has arrived, who indeed cutting or splitting will do, the man out of delusion, him of these will follow.)
But at the time of a festival, if a man, out of delusion, performs cutting or splitting, he will follow the fate of these (beings).

आहूयाप्सरसो देवस्ततो लोकपितामहः। वाचा मधुरया प्राह सान्त्वयन्निव भारत ॥१२-२७३-४१॥

इयमिन्द्रादनुप्राप्ता ब्रह्महत्या वराङ्गनाः। चतुर्थमस्या भागं हि मयोक्ताः सम्प्रतीच्छत ॥१२-२७३-४२॥

rajasvalāsu nārīṣu yo vai maithunam ācaret। tam eṣā yāsyati kṣipraṃ vyetu vo mānaso jvaraḥ॥12-273-44॥
[रजस्वलासु (rajasvalāsu) - in menstruating; (women); नारीषु (nārīṣu) - among women; यः (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; मैथुनम् (maithunam) - sexual union; आचरेत् (ācaret) - should practice; तम् (tam) - him; एषा (eṣā) - this; यास्यति (yāsyati) - will go (to); क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; व्येतु (vyetu) - may depart; वः (vo) - your; मानसः (mānasaḥ) - mental; ज्वरः (jvaraḥ) - fever;]
(In menstruating women, who indeed should practice sexual union, to him this will go quickly; may your mental fever depart.)
If anyone has intercourse with a menstruating woman, this (trouble) will quickly befall him; may your mental distress subside.

tatheti hṛṣṭamanasa uktvāthāpsarasāṃ gaṇāḥ। svāni sthānāni samprāpya remire bharatarṣabha ॥12-273-45॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - so; हृष्टमनसः (hṛṣṭamanasaḥ) - with delighted minds; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; अथ (atha) - then; अप्सरसाम् (apsarasām) - of the apsarases; गणाः (gaṇāḥ) - groups; स्वानि (svāni) - their own; स्थानानि (sthānāni) - places; सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having reached; रेमिरे (remire) - rejoiced; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Thus, having spoken with delighted minds, then the groups of apsarases, having reached their own places, rejoiced, O best of the Bharatas.)
Thus, O best of the Bharatas, the groups of apsarases, having spoken joyfully, returned to their own places and rejoiced.
ततस्त्रिलोककृद्देवः पुनरेव महातपाः। अपः सञ्चिन्तयामास ध्यातास्ताश्चाप्यथागमन् ॥१२-२७३-४६॥
tatas trilokakṛd devaḥ punar eva mahātapāḥ। apaḥ sañcintayām āsa dhyātās tāś cāpy athāgaman ॥12-273-46॥

O king, all those women, having assembled, bowed down to the grandsire Brahmā of immeasurable energy and spoke these words.
इमाः स्म देव सम्प्राप्तास्त्वत्सकाशमरिंदम। शासनात्तव देवेश समाज्ञापय नो विभो ॥१२-२७३-४८॥
imāḥ sma deva samprāptās tvat-sakāśam ariṁdama। śāsanāt tava deveśa samājñāpaya no vibho ॥12-273-48॥

एवं भवतु लोकेश यथा वदसि नः प्रभो। मोक्षं समयतोऽस्माकं सञ्चिन्तयितुमर्हसि ॥१२-२७३-५०॥
evaṃ bhavatu lokeśa yathā vadasi naḥ prabho। mokṣaṃ samayato'smākaṃ sañcintayitumarhasi ॥12-273-50॥

(Thus let it be, O lord of the world, as you say, O master; at the appointed time, you ought to consider liberation for us.)
"So be it, O Lord of the world, as you have said, O Master; at the appointed time, please consider granting us liberation."
त्वं हि देवेश सर्वस्य जगतः परमो गुरुः। कोऽन्यः प्रसादो हि भवेद्यः कृच्छ्रान्नः समुद्धरेत् ॥१२-२७३-५१॥
tvaṃ hi deveśa sarvasya jagataḥ paramo guruḥ। ko'nyaḥ prasādo hi bhaved yaḥ kṛcchrān naḥ samuddharet ॥12-273-51॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; देवेश (deveśa) - O lord of the gods; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; कः (kaḥ) - who; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; प्रसादः (prasādaḥ) - grace; हि (hi) - indeed; भवेत् (bhavet) - could be; यः (yaḥ) - who; कृच्छ्रात् (kṛcchrāt) - from difficulties; नः (naḥ) - us; समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - would uplift;]
(You indeed, O lord of the gods, are the supreme teacher of all the world. Who else could be the grace who would uplift us from difficulties?)
You truly are the supreme teacher of all the world, O lord of the gods. Who else but your grace could deliver us from our hardships?

अल्पा इति मतिं कृत्वा यो नरो बुद्धिमोहितः। श्लेष्ममूत्रपुरीषाणि युष्मासु प्रतिमोक्ष्यति ॥१२-२७३-५२॥
alpā iti matiṃ kṛtvā yo naro buddhimohitaḥ। śleṣmamūtrapurīṣāṇi yuṣmāsu pratimokṣyati ॥12-273-52॥
[अल्पा (alpā) - small; little; इति (iti) - thus; so; मतिं (matiṃ) - thought; mind; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; having considered; यः (yaḥ) - who; नरः (naraḥ) - man; person; बुद्धि-मोहितः (buddhi-mohitaḥ) - deluded in intellect; whose understanding is confused; श्लेष्म-मूत्र-पुरीषाणि (śleṣma-mūtra-purīṣāṇi) - phlegm, urine, and feces; युष्मासु (yuṣmāsu) - upon you; among you; प्रतिमोक्ष्यति (pratimokṣyati) - will discharge; will release;]
(Having made the thought 'small' thus, the man whose intellect is deluded will discharge phlegm, urine, and feces upon you.)
If a man, whose intellect is deluded, considers you as insignificant, he will discharge phlegm, urine, and feces upon you.
तमेषा यास्यति क्षिप्रं तत्रैव च निवत्स्यति। तथा वो भविता मोक्ष इति सत्यं ब्रवीमि वः ॥१२-२७३-५३॥
tameṣā yāsyati kṣipraṃ tatraiva ca nivatsyati। tathā vo bhavitā mokṣa iti satyaṃ bravīmi vaḥ ॥12-273-53॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एषा (eṣā) - this; यास्यति (yāsyati) - will go; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; च (ca) - and; निवत्स्यति (nivatsyati) - will remain; तथा (tathā) - thus; वः (vaḥ) - for you; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; मोक्ष (mokṣa) - liberation; इति (iti) - thus; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; वः (vaḥ) - to you;]
(Him this will go quickly, right there and will remain; thus for you will be liberation, thus truth I speak to you.)
She will quickly go to him and remain there; thus, liberation will be yours. This is the truth I tell you.

tato vimucya devendraṃ brahmahatyā yudhiṣṭhira। yathānisṛṣṭaṃ taṃ deśam agacchad devaśāsanāt ॥12-273-54॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विमुच्य (vimucya) - having released; देवेन्द्रम् (devendram) - Indra; ब्रह्महत्या (brahmahatyā) - Brahminicide; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira; यथा (yathā) - as; अनिसृष्टम् (anisṛṣṭam) - not abandoned; तम् (tam) - that; देशम् (deśam) - place; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - went; देवशासनात् (devaśāsanāt) - by the command of the gods;]
(Then, having released Indra, Brahminicide, Yudhishthira, as not abandoned, that place went by the command of the gods.)
Then, Yudhishthira, having released Indra from Brahminicide, went to that place as directed by the gods.
एवं शक्रेण सम्प्राप्ता ब्रह्महत्या जनाधिप। पितामहमनुज्ञाप्य सोऽश्वमेधमकल्पयत् ॥१२-२७३-५५॥
evaṃ śakreṇa samprāptā brahmahatyā janādhipa। pitāmahamanujñāpya so'śvamedhamakalpayat ॥12-273-55॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - by Śakra; सम्प्राप्ता (samprāptā) - having been brought; ब्रह्महत्या (brahmahatyā) - Brahminicide; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - the lord of men; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - the grandsire; अनुज्ञाप्य (anujñāpya) - having obtained permission; सः (saḥ) - he; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the horse-sacrifice; अकल्पयत् (akalpayat) - arranged;]
(Thus, by Śakra, Brahminicide having been brought to the lord of men; having obtained permission from the grandsire, he arranged the horse-sacrifice.)
Thus, when Brahminicide was brought by Śakra to the lord of men, after obtaining permission from the grandsire, he arranged for the horse-sacrifice.
श्रूयते हि महाराज सम्प्राप्ता वासवेन वै। ब्रह्महत्या ततः शुद्धिं हयमेधेन लब्धवान् ॥१२-२७३-५६॥
śrūyate hi mahārāja samprāptā vāsavena vai। brahmahatyā tataḥ śuddhiṃ hayamedhena labdhavān ॥12-273-56॥
[श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; हि (hi) - indeed; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सम्प्राप्ता (samprāptā) - attained; वासवेन (vāsavena) - by Vāsava (Indra); वै (vai) - truly; ब्रह्महत्या (brahmahatyā) - the killing of a Brāhmaṇa; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; शुद्धिं (śuddhiṃ) - purification; हयमेधेन (hayamedhena) - by the horse-sacrifice; लब्धवान् (labdhavān) - obtained;]
(It is heard indeed, O great king, that the sin of killing a Brāhmaṇa, having been incurred by Vāsava (Indra), thereafter he obtained purification by the horse-sacrifice.)
It is said, O great king, that Indra, having incurred the sin of killing a Brāhmaṇa, later attained purification by performing the horse-sacrifice.
समवाप्य श्रियं देवो हत्वारींश्च सहस्रशः। प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे वासवः पृथिवीपते ॥१२-२७३-५७॥

[समवाप्य (samavāpya) - having obtained together; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; अरिन् (arin) - enemies; च (ca) - and; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; प्रहर्षम् (praharṣam) - great joy; अतुलम् (atulam) - incomparable; लेभे (lebhe) - obtained; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Indra; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O king;]
(Having obtained prosperity, the god, having slain enemies by thousands, obtained incomparable great joy, O king.)
O king, having slain thousands of enemies and attained prosperity, Indra experienced incomparable joy.
वृत्रस्य रुधिराच्चैव खुखुण्डाः पार्थ जज्ञिरे। द्विजातिभिरभक्ष्यास्ते दीक्षितैश्च तपोधनैः ॥१२-२७३-५८॥
vṛtrasya rudhirāccaiva khukhuṇḍāḥ pārtha jajñire। dvijātibhirabhakṣyāste dīkṣitaiśca tapodhanaiḥ ॥12-273-58॥
[वृत्रस्य (vṛtrasya) - of Vṛtra; रुधिरात् (rudhirāt) - from the blood; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; खुखुण्डाः (khukhuṇḍāḥ) - owls; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; जज्ञिरे (jajñire) - were born; द्विजातिभिः (dvijātibhiḥ) - by the twice-born; अभक्ष्याः (abhakṣyāḥ) - not to be eaten; ते (te) - they; दीक्षितैः (dīkṣitaiḥ) - by the initiated; च (ca) - and; तपोधनैः (tapodhanaiḥ) - by those whose wealth is austerity;]
(O Pārtha, indeed, owls were born from the blood of Vṛtra; they are not to be eaten by the twice-born, by the initiated, and by those whose wealth is austerity.)
O Pārtha, owls originated from the blood of Vṛtra; they are considered unfit for consumption by the twice-born, by the initiated, and by ascetics.
सर्वावस्थं त्वमप्येषां द्विजातीनां प्रियं कुरु। इमे हि भूतले देवाः प्रथिताः कुरुनन्दन ॥१२-२७३-५९॥
sarvāvasthaṃ tvam apy eṣāṃ dvijātīnām priyaṃ kuru। ime hi bhūtale devāḥ prathitāḥ kurunandana ॥12-273-59॥
[सर्वावस्थम् (sarvāvastham) - in all conditions; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; द्विजातीनाम् (dvijātīnām) - of the twice-born; प्रियं (priyam) - dear; pleasant; कुरु (kuru) - do; make; इमे (ime) - these; हि (hi) - indeed; भूतले (bhūtale) - on the earth; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; प्रथिताः (prathitāḥ) - renowned; famous; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus;]
(In all conditions, you also, of these twice-born, do what is dear. These indeed on the earth are gods, renowned, O delight of the Kurus.)
O Kurunandana, always do what is dear to these twice-born, for these Brahmins are indeed renowned as gods on earth.
एवं शक्रेण कौरव्य बुद्धिसौक्ष्म्यान्महासुरः। उपायपूर्वं निहतो वृत्रोऽथामिततेजसा ॥१२-२७३-६०॥
evaṃ śakreṇa kauravya buddhisaukṣmyānmahāsuraḥ। upāyapūrvaṃ nihato vṛtro'thāmitatejasā ॥12-273-60॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - by Śakra; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; बुद्धिसौक्ष्म्यात् (buddhisaukṣmyāt) - by subtlety of intellect; महासुरः (mahāsuraḥ) - the great asura; उपायपूर्वम् (upāyapūrvam) - by means of strategy; निहतः (nihataḥ) - was slain; वृत्रः (vṛtraḥ) - Vṛtra; अथ (atha) - then; अमिततेजसा (amitatejasā) - by the immeasurable brilliance;]
(Thus, by Śakra, O descendant of Kuru, by subtlety of intellect, the great asura, by means of strategy, was slain—Vṛtra then by the immeasurable brilliance.)
Thus, O Kauravya, Vṛtra, the great asura, was slain by Śakra through subtle intelligence and strategic means, by his immeasurable brilliance.
एवं त्वमपि कौरव्य पृथिव्यामपराजितः। भविष्यसि यथा देवः शतक्रतुरमित्रहा ॥१२-२७३-६१॥
evaṃ tvam api kauravya pṛthivyām aparājitaḥ। bhaviṣyasi yathā devaḥ śatakratur amitrahā ॥12-273-61॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on the earth; अपराजितः (aparājitaḥ) - unconquered; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become; यथा (yathā) - just as; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Indra (the hundred-sacrificed); अमित्रहा (amitrahā) - destroyer of foes;]
(Thus you also, O descendant of Kuru, on the earth unconquered, will become, just as the god Indra, destroyer of foes.)
In this way, you too, O Kauravya, will become unconquered on earth, just like the god Indra, the destroyer of enemies.
ये तु शक्रकथां दिव्यामिमां पर्वसु पर्वसु। विप्रमध्ये पठिष्यन्ति न ते प्राप्स्यन्ति किल्बिषम् ॥१२-२७३-६२॥
ye tu śakrakathāṃ divyām imāṃ parvasu parvasu। vipramadhye paṭhiṣyanti na te prāpsyanti kilbiṣam ॥12-273-62॥
[ये (ye) - those who; तु (tu) - but; शक्रकथाम् (śakrakathām) - the tale of Śakra; दिव्याम् (divyām) - divine; इमाम् (imām) - this; पर्वसु (parvasu) - on festival days; पर्वसु (parvasu) - on festival days; विप्रमध्ये (vipramadhye) - in the midst of Brāhmaṇas; पठिष्यन्ति (paṭhiṣyanti) - will recite; न (na) - not; ते (te) - they; प्राप्स्यन्ति (prāpsyanti) - will obtain; किल्बिषम् (kilbiṣam) - sin;]
(Those who, but, the tale of Śakra, divine, this, on festival days, on festival days, in the midst of Brāhmaṇas, will recite, not, they, will obtain, sin.)
But those who recite this divine tale of Śakra on every festival day in the midst of Brāhmaṇas, they will not incur any sin.
इत्येतद्वृत्रमाश्रित्य शक्रस्यात्यद्भुतं महत्। कथितं कर्म ते तात किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि ॥१२-२७३-६३॥
ity etad vṛtram āśritya śakrasya atyadbhutam mahat। kathitam karma te tāta kiṃ bhūyaḥ śrotum icchasi ॥12-273-63॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; वृत्रम् (vṛtram) - Vṛtra; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; अत्यद्भुतम् (atyadbhutam) - most wonderful; महत् (mahat) - great; कथितम् (kathitam) - has been told; कर्म (karma) - deed; ते (te) - to you; तात (tāta) - O dear one; किम् (kim) - what; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - more; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छसि (icchasi) - do you wish;]
(Thus, this Vṛtra having been resorted to, of Śakra, most wonderful, great, has been told (the) deed to you, O dear one; what more to hear do you wish?)
Thus, the most wonderful and great deed of Śakra, accomplished by resorting to Vṛtra, has been told to you, O dear one; what more do you wish to hear?
