कथमेष महाप्राज्ञ ज्वरः प्रादुरभूत्कुतः। ज्वरोत्पत्तिं निपुणतः श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं प्रभो ॥१२-२७४-३॥

भूतानि च महाराज नानारूपधराण्यथ। राक्षसाश्च महारौद्राः पिशाचाश्च महाबलाः ॥१२-२७४-१३॥
bhūtāni ca mahārāja nānārūpadharāṇyatha। rākṣasāśca mahāraudrāḥ piśācāśca mahābalāḥ ॥12-274-13॥

ततस्तस्य मखं देवाः सर्वे शक्रपुरोगमाः। गमनाय समागम्य बुद्धिमापेदिरे तदा ॥१२-२७४-१९॥

(They, the great-souled ones, having the radiance of fire, by blazing aerial chariots, with the consent of the god, went to Gaṅgādvāra; thus it is heard.)
It is said that those great-souled ones, shining like fire, went to Gaṅgādvāra in blazing aerial chariots with the god's consent.
प्रस्थिता देवता दृष्ट्वा शैलराजसुता तदा। उवाच वचनं साध्वी देवं पशुपतिं पतिम् ॥१२-२७४-२१॥
prasthitā devatā dṛṣṭvā śailarājasutā tadā। uvāca vacanaṃ sādhvī devaṃ paśupatiṃ patim ॥12-274-21॥

(Having departed, the deities having seen, the daughter of the king of mountains then, the virtuous lady said a word to the god, to Paśupati, (her) husband.)

(Then, having applied the power of yoga, the lord of all lords of yoga, that sacrifice, of great brilliance, with the terrible attendants, then, suddenly, caused to be destroyed, the god of gods, the wielder of Pināka (Śiva).)

tatas tasya sureśasya krodhādamitatejasaḥ। lalāṭāt prasṛto ghoraḥ svedabindur babhūva ha ॥12-274-36॥

(In that, just as the sweat-drop fell but so on the earth, there arose a very great fire like the fire of destruction.)

(When the wailing had arisen, but in the sound causing fear to the world, the grandsire, showing Mahadeva, addressed (him).)
When the dreadful wailing sound arose, terrifying the world, the grandsire showed Mahadeva and spoke to him.
भवतोऽपि सुराः सर्वे भागं दास्यन्ति वै प्रभो। क्रियतां प्रतिसंहारः सर्वदेवेश्वर त्वया ॥१२-२७४-४३॥
bhavato'pi surāḥ sarve bhāgaṃ dāsyanti vai prabho। kriyatāṃ pratisaṃhāraḥ sarvadeveśvara tvayā ॥12-274-43॥

(Of you also, the gods all will give a share indeed, O lord. Let the withdrawal be done by you, O lord of all gods.)
O lord, all the gods will indeed give you a share as well. Therefore, O lord of all gods, let the withdrawal be performed by you.
इमा हि देवताः सर्वा ऋषयश्च परन्तप। तव क्रोधान्महादेव न शान्तिमुपलेभिरे ॥१२-२७४-४४॥
imā hi devatāḥ sarvā ṛṣayaś ca parantapa। tava krodhān mahādeva na śāntim upalebhire ॥12-274-44॥

(These indeed deities all and sages, O scorcher of foes, from your anger, O great god, not peace attained.)
O great god, because of your anger, all these deities and sages, O scorcher of foes, have not attained peace.
यश्चैष पुरुषो जातः स्वेदात्ते विबुधोत्तम। ज्वरो नामैष धर्मज्ञ लोकेषु प्रचरिष्यति ॥१२-२७४-४५॥
yaś caiṣa puruṣo jātaḥ svedāt te vibudhotama। jvaro nām aiṣa dharmajña lokeṣu pracariṣyati ॥12-274-45॥

(Who and this person born from your sweat, O best of the wise, fever by name, this knower of dharma, will move about in the worlds.)
O best of the wise, this being who has arisen from your sweat, known as 'fever', will move about in the worlds as a knower of dharma.
एकीभूतस्य न ह्यस्य धारणे तेजसः प्रभो। समर्था सकला पृथ्वी बहुधा सृज्यतामयम् ॥१२-२७४-४६॥
ekībhūtasya na hy asya dhāraṇe tejasah prabho। samarthā sakalā pṛthvī bahudhā sṛjyatām ayam ॥12-274-46॥

(Of the one who has become united, not indeed of this in sustaining the energy, O Lord, capable the entire earth in many ways let it be created this.)
O Lord, the entire earth is not capable of sustaining the energy of this one who has become united; let this be created in many forms.
इत्युक्तो ब्रह्मणा देवो भागे चापि प्रकल्पिते। भगवन्तं तथेत्याह ब्रह्माणममितौजसम् ॥१२-२७४-४७॥
ityukto brahmaṇā devo bhāge cāpi prakalpite. bhagavantaṃ tathetyāha brahmāṇamamitaujasam ॥12-274-47॥

(Thus addressed by Brahmā, the god, in the portion also having been arranged, said thus to the venerable one, to Brahmā of immeasurable energy.)
Thus, when addressed by Brahmā and the portion had also been arranged, the god said these words to the venerable Brahmā of immeasurable energy.
परां च प्रीतिमगमदुत्स्मयंश्च पिनाकधृक्। अवाप च तदा भागं यथोक्तं ब्रह्मणा भवः ॥१२-२७४-४८॥
parāṃ ca prītim agamad utsmayaṃś ca pinākadhṛk। avāpa ca tadā bhāgaṃ yathoktaṃ brahmaṇā bhavaḥ ॥12-274-48॥

(And the wielder of Pināka (Śiva) attained supreme delight and a smile, and then Bhava (Śiva) obtained the share as stated by Brahmā.)

ज्वरं च सर्वधर्मज्ञो बहुधा व्यसृजत्तदा। शान्त्यर्थं सर्वभूतानां शृणु तच्चापि पुत्रक ॥१२-२७४-४९॥

(Among tigers, O knower of dharma, fatigue is here called fever. Among humans, O knower of dharma, this fever is well-known by name. At death, at birth, and also in the middle, it enters man.)

(This energy of Maheśvara, named fever, is very terrible. He is worthy of being worshipped and honored indeed by all beings, the Lord.)

(By this indeed entered Vṛtra, the best of the upholders of dharma; (he) expanded. Then Śakra hurled the thunderbolt at him.)

(Having entered, the thunderbolt but tore asunder Vṛtra, O Bhārata. And having been torn by the thunderbolt, the great yogi, the great asura, went to the supreme abode of Viṣṇu of immeasurable splendor.)
The thunderbolt entered and tore Vṛtra apart, O Bhārata. Having been struck by the thunderbolt, the great yogi and asura went to the supreme abode of Viṣṇu, whose splendor is immeasurable.
विष्णुभक्त्या हि तेनेदं जगद्व्याप्तमभूत्पुरा। तस्माच्च निहतो युद्धे विष्णोः स्थानमवाप्तवान् ॥१२-२७४-५८॥
viṣṇubhaktyā hi tenedaṃ jagad vyāptam abhūt purā। tasmāc ca nihato yuddhe viṣṇoḥ sthānam avāptavān ॥12-274-58॥
[विष्णु-भक्त्या (viṣṇu-bhaktyā) - by devotion to Viṣṇu; हि (hi) - indeed; तेन (tena) - by him; इदं (idaṃ) - this; जगत् (jagat) - world; व्याप्तम् (vyāptam) - pervaded; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; पुरा (purā) - formerly; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; च (ca) - and; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Viṣṇu; स्थानम् (sthānam) - abode; अवाप्तवान् (avāptavān) - attained;]
(By devotion to Viṣṇu indeed by him this world became pervaded formerly; therefore and slain in battle of Viṣṇu abode attained.)

ityeṣa vṛtramāśritya jvarasya mahato mayā। vistaraḥ kathitaḥ putra kimanyatprabravīmi te ॥12-274-59॥

(Thus, this (account), having resorted to Vṛtra, of the great fever, by me, detail has been told, son; what else shall I say to you?)

[इमां (imām) - this (feminine accusative singular); ज्वर-उत्पत्ति-मदीन-मानसः (jvara-utpatti-madīna-mānasaḥ) - feeble-minded due to the origin of fever; पठेत् (paṭhet) - should recite; सदा (sadā) - always; यः (yaḥ) - who; सुसमाहितः (susamāhitaḥ) - well-concentrated; नरः (naraḥ) - man; विमुक्त-रोगः (vimukta-rogaḥ) - free from disease; सः (saḥ) - he; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; मुदा युतः (mudā yutaḥ) - endowed with joy; लभेत (labheta) - may obtain; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; सः (saḥ) - he; यथा-अमनीषितान् (yathā-amaniṣitān) - as (he) wishes;]
(This (one), feeble-minded due to the origin of fever, whoever man, always well-concentrated, should recite (this); he, free from disease, happy, endowed with joy, may obtain desires as (he) wishes.)
Whoever man, always well-concentrated, recites this account of the origin of fever, though feeble-minded, he becomes free from disease, happy, and endowed with joy, and may obtain whatever desires he wishes.
