उद्वेगं नेह ते किञ्चित्सुसूक्ष्ममपि लक्षये। नित्यतृप्त इव स्वस्थो बालवच्च विचेष्टसे ॥१२-२७५-४॥
udvegaṃ neha te kiñcit susūkṣmam api lakṣaye। nityatṛpta iva svastho bālavac ca viceṣṭase ॥12-275-4॥

(Bottomless and unstable and those having movement, O Nārada, and blind and dull live; see us also living.)
O Nārada, even those who are bottomless, unstable, moving, blind, and dull live; look at us, we too are living.
विहितेनैव जीवन्ति अरोगाङ्गा दिवौकसः। बलवन्तोऽबलाश्चैव तद्वदस्मान्सभाजय ॥१२-२७५-८॥
vihitenaiva jīvanti arogāṅgā divaukasaḥ। balavanto'balāścaiva tadvadasmān sabhājaya ॥12-275-8॥

Even the gods with healthy bodies live only by what is ordained; both the strong and the weak, honor us in the same way.
सहस्रिणश्च जीवन्ति जीवन्ति शतिनस्तथा। शाकेन चान्ये जीवन्ति पश्यास्मानपि जीवतः ॥१२-२७५-९॥
sahasriṇaś ca jīvanti jīvanti śatinaś tathā। śākena cānye jīvanti paśyāsmān api jīvataḥ ॥12-275-9॥

यदा न शोचेमहि किं नु न स्या; द्धर्मेण वा नारद कर्मणा वा। कृतान्तवश्यानि यदा सुखानि; दुःखानि वा यन्न विधर्षयन्ति ॥१२-२७५-१०॥
yadā na śocemahi kiṃ nu na syā; dharmeṇa vā nārada karmaṇā vā। kṛtāntavaśyāni yadā sukhāni; duḥkhāni vā yan na vidharṣayanti ॥12-275-10॥

(When we do not grieve, what indeed would not be, O Nārada, by dharma or by action? When pleasures or sorrows, which are subject to death, do not oppress (us).)

यस्मै प्रज्ञां कथयन्ते मनुष्याः; प्रज्ञामूलो हीन्द्रियाणां प्रसादः। मुह्यन्ति शोचन्ति यदेन्द्रियाणि; प्रज्ञालाभो नास्ति मूढेन्द्रियस्य ॥१२-२७५-११॥
yasmai prajñāṃ kathayante manuṣyāḥ; prajñāmūlo hīndriyāṇāṃ prasādaḥ। muhyanti śocanti yadindriyāṇi; prajñālābho nāsti mūḍhendriyasya ॥12-275-11॥
[यस्मै (yasmai) - to whom; प्रज्ञां (prajñām) - wisdom; कथयन्ते (kathayante) - they speak; मनुष्याः (manuṣyāḥ) - men; प्रज्ञामूलः (prajñāmūlaḥ) - rooted in wisdom; हि (hi) - indeed; इन्द्रियाणां (indriyāṇām) - of the senses; प्रसादः (prasādaḥ) - clarity; मुह्यन्ति (muhyanti) - become deluded; शोचन्ति (śocanti) - grieve; यत् (yat) - when; इन्द्रियाणि (indriyāṇi) - the senses; प्रज्ञालाभः (prajñālābhaḥ) - attainment of wisdom; नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; मूढेन्द्रियस्य (mūḍhendriyasya) - of one whose senses are deluded;]
(To whom men speak wisdom; indeed, the clarity of the senses is rooted in wisdom. When the senses become deluded and grieve, attainment of wisdom does not exist for one whose senses are deluded.)
Men speak of wisdom to one who is receptive; for clarity of the senses is indeed rooted in wisdom. When the senses are confused and distressed, there can be no attainment of wisdom for one whose senses are deluded.
मूढस्य दर्पः स पुनर्मोह एव; मूढस्य नायं न परोऽस्ति लोकः। न ह्येव दुःखानि सदा भवन्ति; सुखस्य वा नित्यशो लाभ एव ॥१२-२७५-१२॥
mūḍhasya darpaḥ sa punarmoha eva; mūḍhasya nāyaṃ na paro'sti lokaḥ। na hyeva duḥkhāni sadā bhavanti; sukhasya vā nityaśo lābha eva ॥12-275-12॥
[मूढस्य (mūḍhasya) - of the deluded; दर्पः (darpaḥ) - arrogance; सः (saḥ) - that; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; मोहः (mohaḥ) - delusion; एव (eva) - indeed; मूढस्य (mūḍhasya) - of the deluded; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; न (na) - not; परः (paraḥ) - other; अस्ति (asti) - exists; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; एव (eva) - indeed; दुःखानि (duḥkhāni) - sorrows; सदा (sadā) - always; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - are; सुखस्य (sukhasya) - of happiness; वा (vā) - or; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - constantly; लाभः (lābhaḥ) - gain; एव (eva) - indeed;]
(Of the deluded, arrogance is indeed again delusion; for the deluded, neither this nor another world exists. Indeed, sorrows do not always exist; nor is there constant gain of happiness.)
For the deluded, arrogance is nothing but delusion again; for the deluded, neither this world nor the next exists. Sorrows do not always persist, nor is happiness always gained.
भावात्मकं सम्परिवर्तमानं; न मादृशः सञ्ज्वरं जातु कुर्यात्। इष्टान्भोगान्नानुरुध्येत्सुखं वा; न चिन्तयेद्दुःखमभ्यागतं वा ॥१२-२७५-१३॥
bhāvātmakaṃ samparivartamānaṃ; na mādṛśaḥ sañjvaraṃ jātu kuryāt. iṣṭānbhogānnānurudhyetsukhaṃ vā; na cintayedduḥkhamabhyāgataṃ vā ॥12-275-13॥
[भावात्मकं (bhāvātmakaṃ) - consisting of emotion; सम्परिवर्तमानं (samparivartamānaṃ) - constantly changing; न (na) - not; मादृशः (mādṛśaḥ) - one like me; सञ्ज्वरं (sañjvaraṃ) - affliction; जातु (jātu) - ever; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; इष्टान् (iṣṭān) - desired; भोगान् (bhogān) - enjoyments; न (na) - not; अनुरुध्येत् (anurudhyet) - should pursue; सुखं (sukhaṃ) - happiness; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; चिन्तयेत् (cintayet) - should think; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; अभ्यागतं (abhyāgataṃ) - that has come; वा (vā) - or;]
(Consisting of emotion, constantly changing; one like me should never do affliction. Desired enjoyments should not be pursued, or happiness; nor should one think of sorrow that has come, or.)
One such as I, knowing the emotional and ever-changing nature of things, should never succumb to affliction. One should not pursue desired enjoyments or happiness, nor dwell on sorrow that has come.
समाहितो न स्पृहयेत्परेषां; नानागतं नाभिनन्देत लाभम्। न चापि हृष्येद्विपुलेऽर्थलाभे; तथार्थनाशे च न वै विषीदेत् ॥१२-२७५-१४॥
samāhito na spṛhayed pareṣām; nānāgataṃ nābhinandeta lābham। na cāpi hṛṣyed vipule'rthalābhe; tathārthanāśe ca na vai viṣīdet ॥12-275-14॥
[समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - collected; composed; self-possessed; न (na) - not; स्पृहयेत् (spṛhayet) - should desire; परेषाम् (pareṣām) - of others; न (na) - not; अनागतम् (anāgatam) - not yet come; future; न (na) - not; अभिनन्देत (abhinandeta) - should rejoice; लाभम् (lābham) - gain; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; हृष्येत् (hṛṣyet) - should be elated; विपुले (vipule) - abundant; अर्थलाभे (arthalābhe) - acquisition of wealth; तथा (tathā) - similarly; अर्थनाशे (arthanāśe) - loss of wealth; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; वै (vai) - indeed; विषीदेत् (viṣīdet) - should be dejected;]
(The composed one should not desire the possessions of others; should not rejoice in gain that has not yet come. Nor should he be elated at abundant acquisition of wealth; similarly, in loss of wealth, he indeed should not be dejected.)
A self-possessed person should not covet what belongs to others, nor delight in gains that are yet to come. He should not be elated by abundant wealth, nor should he be dejected by its loss.
न बान्धवा न च वित्तं न कौली; न च श्रुतं न च मन्त्रा न वीर्यम्। दुःखात्त्रातुं सर्व एवोत्सहन्ते; परत्र शीले न तु यान्ति शान्तिम् ॥१२-२७५-१५॥
na bāndhavā na ca vittaṃ na kaulī; na ca śrutaṃ na ca mantrā na vīryam. duḥkhāttrātuṃ sarva evotsahante; paratra śīle na tu yānti śāntim ॥12-275-15॥

(Not relatives, not wealth, not family lineage, not learning, not mantras, not strength; all indeed strive to protect (one) from suffering; but in the next world, in virtue, they do not go to peace.)
Neither relatives, nor wealth, nor family lineage, nor learning, nor mantras, nor strength—though all strive to protect one from suffering, in the next world, only virtue leads to peace, not these others.
नास्ति बुद्धिरयुक्तस्य नायोगाद्विद्यते सुखम्। धृतिश्च दुःखत्यागश्चाप्युभयं नः सुखोदयम् ॥१२-२७५-१६॥
nāsti buddhirayuktasya nāyogādvidyate sukham। dhṛtiśca duḥkhatyāgaścāpyubhayaṃ naḥ sukhodayam ॥12-275-16॥
[नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; अयुक्तस्य (ayuktasya) - of the unrestrained; न (na) - not; अयोगात् (ayogāt) - from lack of discipline; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; धृतिः (dhṛtiḥ) - steadfastness; च (ca) - and; दुःखत्यागः (duḥkhatyāgaḥ) - abandonment of suffering; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उभयम् (ubhayam) - both; नः (naḥ) - for us; सुखोदयम् (sukhodayam) - arising of happiness;]
(Intellect does not exist for the unrestrained; nor is there happiness from lack of discipline. Steadfastness and abandonment of suffering, both, for us, are the arising of happiness.)
For one who is unrestrained, there is no intellect; nor is there happiness without discipline. Steadfastness and the abandonment of suffering—both, for us, are the source of happiness.
प्रियं हि हर्षजननं हर्ष उत्सेकवर्धनः। उत्सेको नरकायैव तस्मात्तं सन्त्यजाम्यहम् ॥१२-२७५-१७॥
priyaṃ hi harṣajananaṃ harṣa utsekavardhanaḥ। utseko narakāyaiva tasmāttaṃ santyajāmyaham ॥12-275-17॥

(Dear indeed is the source of joy; joy is the increaser of arrogance. Arrogance only leads to hell; therefore, that I abandon.)
What is dear is indeed a source of joy, but joy increases arrogance. Arrogance leads only to hell; therefore, I abandon it.
एताञ्शोकभयोत्सेकान्मोहनान्सुखदुःखयोः। पश्यामि साक्षिवल्लोके देहस्यास्य विचेष्टनात् ॥१२-२७५-१८॥

अर्थकामौ परित्यज्य विशोको विगतज्वरः। तृष्णामोहौ तु सन्त्यज्य चरामि पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥१२-२७५-१९॥
arthakāmau parityajya viśoko vigatajvaraḥ। tṛṣṇāmohau tu santyajya carāmi pṛthivīmimām ॥12-275-19॥
[अर्थकामौ (arthakāmau) - wealth and desire; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; विशोकः (viśokaḥ) - free from sorrow; विगतज्वरः (vigatajvaraḥ) - free from fever (affliction); तृष्णामोहौ (tṛṣṇāmohau) - craving and delusion; तु (tu) - but; सन्त्यज्य (santyajya) - having completely abandoned; चरामि (carāmi) - I wander; पृथिवीमिमाम् (pṛthivīmimām) - this earth;]
(Having abandoned wealth and desire, free from sorrow and free from affliction, but having completely abandoned craving and delusion, I wander this earth.)
Having given up wealth and desire, and being free from sorrow and affliction, but having also completely abandoned craving and delusion, I wander this earth.
न मृत्युतो न चाधर्मान्न लोभान्न कुतश्चन। पीतामृतस्येवात्यन्तमिह चामुत्र वा भयम् ॥१२-२७५-२०॥
na mṛtyuto na cādharmānna lobhānna kutaścana। pītāmṛtasyevātyantamiha cāmutra vā bhayam ॥12-275-20॥
[न (na) - not; मृत्युतः (mṛtyutaḥ) - from death; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अधर्मात् (adharmāt) - from unrighteousness; न (na) - not; लोभात् (lobhāt) - from greed; न (na) - not; कुतश्चन (kutaścana) - from anywhere; पीतामृतस्य (pītāmṛtasya) - of one who has drunk nectar; इव (iva) - like; अत्यन्तम् (atyantam) - absolutely; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; अमुत्र (amutra) - there (in the other world); वा (vā) - or; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(Not from death, not from unrighteousness, not from greed, not from anywhere; like one who has drunk nectar, absolutely here and there (in the other world) or fear.)
There is no fear here or hereafter, not from death, unrighteousness, greed, or from anywhere, just as for one who has drunk nectar.
एतद्ब्रह्मन्विजानामि महत्कृत्वा तपोऽव्ययम्। तेन नारद सम्प्राप्तो न मां शोकः प्रबाधते ॥१२-२७५-२१॥
etad brahman vijānāmi mahat kṛtvā tapo'vyayam। tena nārada samprāpto na māṃ śokaḥ prabādhate ॥12-275-21॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; विजानामि (vijānāmi) - I know; महत् (mahat) - great; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - imperishable; तेन (tena) - by that; नारद (nārada) - O Nārada; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - attained; न (na) - not; माम् (mām) - me; शोकः (śokaḥ) - sorrow; प्रबाधते (prabādhate) - afflicts;]
(This, O Brahman, I know: having performed great imperishable austerity, by that, O Nārada, attained (it); not does sorrow afflict me.)
O Brahman, I know this: Having performed great and imperishable austerity, by that, O Nārada, I have attained (the state), and thus sorrow does not afflict me.
