गिरिपृष्ठं समारुह्य सुतो व्यासस्य भारत। समे देशे विविक्ते च निःशलाक उपाविशत् ॥१२-३१९-१॥
giripṛṣṭhaṃ samāruhya suto vyāsasya bhārata। same deśe vivikte ca niḥśalāka upāviśat ॥12-319-1॥
[गिरिपृष्ठं (giripṛṣṭham) - mountain-back; समारुह्य (samāruhya) - having ascended; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; व्यासस्य (vyāsasya) - of Vyāsa; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; समे (same) - level; देशे (deśe) - place; विविक्ते (vivikte) - solitary; च (ca) - and; निःशलाक (niḥśalāka) - without pegs; उपाविशत् (upāviśat) - sat down;]
(Having ascended the mountain-back, the son of Vyāsa, O Bhārata, in a level and solitary place, without pegs, sat down.)
O Bhārata, having climbed to the mountain-top, the son of Vyāsa sat down in a level and solitary place, free from pegs. (12-319-1)
धारयामास चात्मानं यथाशास्त्रं महामुनिः। पादात्प्रभृतिगात्रेषु क्रमेण क्रमयोगवित् ॥१२-३१९-२॥
dhārayāmāsa cātmānaṃ yathāśāstraṃ mahāmuniḥ। pādātprabhṛtigātreṣu krameṇa kramayogavit ॥12-319-2॥
[धारयामास (dhārayāmāsa) - he held; he maintained; च (ca) - and; आत्मानं (ātmānam) - himself; the self; यथा (yathā) - as; according to; शास्त्रं (śāstram) - scripture; treatise; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage; पादात् (pādāt) - from the foot; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - beginning; starting; गात्रेषु (gātreṣu) - in the limbs; in the body parts; क्रमेण (krameṇa) - in order; sequentially; क्रमयोगवित् (kramayogavit) - knower of the method of sequence; one skilled in the practice of sequence;]
(He held himself as (per) scripture, the great sage, from the foot beginning in the limbs, in order, (being) knower of the method of sequence.)
The great sage, skilled in the method of sequential practice, maintained himself according to the scriptures, beginning with the feet and proceeding through the limbs in order. (12-319-2)
ततः स प्राङ्मुखो विद्वानादित्ये नचिरोदिते। पाणिपादं समाधाय विनीतवदुपाविशत् ॥१२-३१९-३॥
tataḥ sa prāṅmukho vidvān āditye nacirodite। pāṇipādaṃ samādhāya vinītavad upāviśat ॥12-319-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; स (sa) - he; प्राङ्मुखः (prāṅmukhaḥ) - facing east; विद्वान् (vidvān) - the learned one; आदित्ये (āditye) - when the sun; न (na) - not; चिरोदिते (cirodite) - long arisen; पाणिपादं (pāṇipādam) - hands and feet; समाधाय (samādhāya) - having placed together; विनीतवत् (vinītavat) - like a humble one; उपाविशत् (upāviśat) - sat down;]
(Then he, facing east, the learned one, when the sun not long arisen, having placed hands and feet together, like a humble one, sat down.)
Then, facing east, the learned man, when the sun had just risen, sat down with his hands and feet placed together, displaying humility. (12-319-3)
न तत्र पक्षिसङ्घातो न शब्दो नापि दर्शनम्। यत्र वैयासकिर्धीमान्योक्तुं समुपचक्रमे ॥१२-३१९-४॥
na tatra pakṣisaṅghāto na śabdo nāpi darśanam। yatra vaiyāsakir dhīmān yoktuṃ samupacakrame ॥12-319-4॥
[न (na) - not; तत्र (tatra) - there; पक्षिसङ्घातः (pakṣisaṅghātaḥ) - bird-assembly; न (na) - not; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; नापि (nāpi) - nor indeed; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; यत्र (yatra) - where; वैयासकिः (vaiyāsakiḥ) - Vaiyāsaki (son of Vyāsa, i.e., Śuka); धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; योक्तुम् (yoktum) - to speak; समुपचक्रमे (samupacakrame) - he began;]
(Not there bird-assembly, not sound, nor indeed sight; where Vaiyāsaki, wise, to speak, he began.)
There was no assembly of birds, no sound, nor even any sight; it was there that the wise Vaiyāsaki began to speak. (12-319-4)
स ददर्श तदात्मानं सर्वसङ्गविनिःसृतम्। प्रजहास ततो हासं शुकः सम्प्रेक्ष्य भास्करम् ॥१२-३१९-५॥
sa dadarśa tad-ātmānaṃ sarva-saṅga-viniḥsṛtam। prajahāsa tato hāsaṃ śukaḥ samprekṣya bhāskaram ॥12-319-5॥
[स (sa) - he; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; तत् (tat) - that; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; सर्व (sarva) - all; सङ्ग (saṅga) - attachment; विनिःसृतम् (viniḥsṛtam) - departed from; प्रजहास (prajahāsa) - laughed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; हासम् (hāsam) - smile; शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having seen; भास्करम् (bhāskaram) - the Sun;]
(He saw that self departed from all attachment. Then Śuka, having seen the Sun, laughed a smile.)
He saw that his self was free from all attachments. Then, seeing the Sun, Śuka smiled. (12-319-5)
स पुनर्योगमास्थाय मोक्षमार्गोपलब्धये। महायोगीश्वरो भूत्वा सोऽत्यक्रामद्विहायसम् ॥१२-३१९-६॥
sa punaryogamāsthāya mokṣamārgopalabdhaye। mahāyogīśvaro bhūtvā so'tyakrāmad vihāyasam ॥12-319-6॥
[स (sa) - he; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; योगम् (yogam) - union; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; मोक्षमार्ग (mokṣamārga) - path of liberation; उपलब्धये (upalabdhaye) - for attainment; महायोगीश्वरो (mahāyogīśvaraḥ) - great lord of yogis; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; सः (saḥ) - he; अत्यक्रामत् (atyakrāmat) - transcended; विहायसम् (vihāyasam) - the sky;]
(He, again having resorted to union for attainment of the path of liberation, having become the great lord of yogis, he transcended the sky.)
He, once again taking up union for the attainment of the path to liberation, became the great lord of yogis and ascended into the sky. (12-319-6)
ततः प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा देवर्षिं नारदं तदा। निवेदयामास तदा स्वं योगं परमर्षये ॥१२-३१९-७॥
tataḥ pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā devarṣiṃ nāradaṃ tadā। nivedayāmāsa tadā svaṃ yogaṃ paramarṣaye ॥12-319-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रदक्षिणं (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; देवर्षिं (devarṣim) - the divine sage; नारदं (nāradaṃ) - Nārada; तदा (tadā) - then; निवेदयामास (nivedayāmāsa) - informed; तदा (tadā) - then; स्वं (svaṃ) - own; योगं (yogaṃ) - practice; परमर्षये (paramarṣaye) - to the supreme sage;]
(Then, having performed circumambulation of the divine sage Nārada, then (he) informed then his own practice to the supreme sage.)
Then, after circumambulating the divine sage Nārada, he informed the supreme sage of his own practice. (12-319-7)
दृष्टो मार्गः प्रवृत्तोऽस्मि स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु तपोधन। त्वत्प्रसादाद्गमिष्यामि गतिमिष्टां महाद्युते ॥१२-३१९-८॥
dṛṣṭo mārgaḥ pravṛtto'smi svasti te'stu tapodhana. tvatprasādādgamiṣyāmi gatimiṣṭāṃ mahādyute ॥12-319-8॥
[दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; मार्गः (mārgaḥ) - path; प्रवृत्तः (pravṛttaḥ) - set forth; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; ते (te) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O possessor of austerity; त्वत् (tvat) - by you; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by favor; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; गतिम् (gatim) - path; इष्टाम् (iṣṭām) - desired; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly radiant one;]
(Seen path set forth I am; well-being to you let it be, O possessor of austerity; by your favor I shall go to the desired path, O greatly radiant one.)
I have seen the path and have set forth; may well-being be to you, O possessor of austerity. By your favor, O greatly radiant one, I shall go to the desired path. (12-319-8)
नारदेनाभ्यनुज्ञातस्ततो द्वैपायनात्मजः। अभिवाद्य पुनर्योगमास्थायाकाशमाविशत् ॥१२-३१९-९॥
nāradenābhyanujñātastato dvaipāyanātmajaḥ। abhivādya punaryogamāsthāyākāśamāviśat ॥12-319-9॥
[नारदेन (nāradena) - by Nārada; अभ्यनुज्ञातः (abhyanujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्वैपायनात्मजः (dvaipāyanātmajaḥ) - the son of Dvaipāyana; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; योगम् (yogam) - yoga; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - the sky; आविशत् (āviśat) - entered;]
(By Nārada having been permitted, then the son of Dvaipāyana, having saluted, again having resorted to yoga, entered the sky.)
Having received permission from Nārada, the son of Dvaipāyana, after offering his salutations, once again entered into yoga and ascended into the sky. (12-319-9)
कैलासपृष्ठादुत्पत्य स पपात दिवं तदा। अन्तरिक्षचरः श्रीमान्व्यासपुत्रः सुनिश्चितः ॥१२-३१९-१०॥
kailāsapṛṣṭhādutpatya sa papāta divaṃ tadā। antarikṣacaraḥ śrīmān vyāsaputraḥ suniścitaḥ ॥12-319-10॥
[कैलासपृष्ठात् (kailāsapṛṣṭhāt) - from the surface of Kailāsa; उत्पत्य (utpatya) - having arisen; सः (saḥ) - he; पपात (papāta) - fell; दिवम् (divam) - to heaven; तदा (tadā) - then; अन्तरिक्षचरः (antarikṣacaraḥ) - moving in the sky; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - splendid; व्यासपुत्रः (vyāsaputraḥ) - son of Vyāsa; सुनिश्चितः (suniścitaḥ) - well-determined;]
(From the surface of Kailāsa, having arisen, he fell to heaven then; moving in the sky, splendid, the son of Vyāsa, well-determined.)
Having arisen from the surface of Kailāsa, the splendid and resolute son of Vyāsa, moving in the sky, then fell to heaven. (12-319-10)
तमुद्यन्तं द्विजश्रेष्ठं वैनतेयसमद्युतिम्। ददृशुः सर्वभूतानि मनोमारुतरंहसम् ॥१२-३१९-११॥
tamudyantaṃ dvijaśreṣṭhaṃ vainateyasamadyutim। dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni manomārutaraṃhasam ॥12-319-11॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उद्यन्तम् (udyantam) - rising; द्विजश्रेष्ठम् (dvijaśreṣṭham) - best of twice-born; वैनतेय (vainateya) - son of Vinatā; समद्युतिम् (samadyutim) - equal in splendor; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; मनो (mano) - mind; मारुत (māruta) - wind; रंहसम् (raṃhasam) - in speed;]
(Him rising, best of twice-born, equal in splendor to the son of Vinatā, all beings saw, in mind and wind in speed.)
All beings saw him rising, the best of the twice-born, whose splendor equaled that of Garuḍa, and whose speed matched that of mind and wind. (12-319-11)
व्यवसायेन लोकांस्त्रीन्सर्वान्सोऽथ विचिन्तयन्। आस्थितो दिव्यमध्वानं पावकार्कसमप्रभः ॥१२-३१९-१२॥
vyavasāyena lokāṃs trīn sarvān so 'tha vicintayan। āsthito divyam adhvānaṃ pāvakārkasamaprabhaḥ ॥12-319-12॥
[व्यवसायेन (vyavasāyena) - by determination; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; त्रीन् (trīn) - three; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; सः (saḥ) - he; अथ (atha) - then; विचिन्तयन् (vicintayan) - contemplating; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having entered; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; अध्वानम् (adhvānam) - path; पावक (pāvaka) - fire; अर्क (arka) - sun; सम (sama) - equal; प्रभः (prabhaḥ) - having radiance;]
(By determination, all three worlds, he then contemplating, having entered the divine path, having radiance equal to fire and sun.)
With determination, he contemplated all three worlds, and then, having entered the divine path, shone with a radiance equal to that of fire and the sun. (12-319-12)
तमेकमनसं यान्तमव्यग्रमकुतोभयम्। ददृशुः सर्वभूतानि जङ्गमानीतराणि च ॥१२-३१९-१३॥
tam ekamanasaṃ yāntam avyagram akutobhayam। dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni jaṅgamāni itarāṇi ca ॥12-319-13॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एकमनसं (ekamanasaṃ) - with one mind; यान्तम् (yāntam) - going; अव्यग्रम् (avyagram) - unagitated; अकुतोभयम् (akutobhayam) - free from fear from any quarter; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; जङ्गमानि (jaṅgamāni) - moving; इतराणि (itarāṇi) - other; च (ca) - and;]
(Him with one mind going unagitated free from fear from any quarter all beings moving other and saw.)
All beings, both moving and others, saw him proceeding with a single-minded, unagitated, and fearless mind. (12-319-13)
यथाशक्ति यथान्यायं पूजयां चक्रिरे तदा। पुष्पवर्षैश्च दिव्यैस्तमवचक्रुर्दिवौकसः ॥१२-३१९-१४॥
yathāśakti yathānyāyaṃ pūjayāṃ cakrire tadā। puṣpavarṣaiś ca divyaiḥ tam avacakrur divaukasah ॥12-319-14॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in accordance with; शक्ति (śakti) - ability; power; यथा (yathā) - as; in accordance with; अन्यायं (anyāyaṃ) - according to propriety; according to justice; पूजयाम् (pūjayām) - worship; honor; चक्रिरे (cakrire) - they did; they performed; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; पुष्पवर्षैः (puṣpavarṣaiḥ) - with showers of flowers; च (ca) - and; दिव्यैः (divyaiḥ) - divine; celestial; तम् (tam) - him; अवचक्रुः (avacakruḥ) - they honored; they praised; दिवौकसः (divaukasah) - the dwellers of heaven; the gods;]
(As (their) ability, as propriety, worship they did then; with showers of flowers and divine (ones), him they honored the dwellers of heaven; (12-319-14))
Then, according to their ability and propriety, they performed worship; the gods honored him with showers of divine flowers. (12-319-14)
तं दृष्ट्वा विस्मिताः सर्वे गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणाः। ऋषयश्चैव संसिद्धाः परं विस्मयमागताः ॥१२-३१९-१५॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā vismitāḥ sarve gandharvāpsarasāṃ gaṇāḥ। ṛṣayaścaiva saṃsiddhāḥ paraṃ vismayamāgatāḥ ॥12-319-15॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; विस्मिताः (vismitāḥ) - astonished; सर्वे (sarve) - all; गन्धर्वाप्सरसां (gandharvāpsarasāṃ) - of Gandharvas and Apsarases; गणाः (gaṇāḥ) - groups; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; संसिद्धाः (saṃsiddhāḥ) - perfected ones; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - astonishment; आगताः (āgatāḥ) - attained;]
(Him having seen, astonished all of Gandharvas and Apsarases groups, sages and indeed perfected ones, supreme astonishment attained.)
Seeing him, all the groups of Gandharvas and Apsarases, as well as the sages and perfected beings, were filled with the utmost astonishment. (12-319-15)
अन्तरिक्षचरः कोऽयं तपसा सिद्धिमागतः। अधःकायोर्ध्ववक्त्रश्च नेत्रैः समभिवाह्यते ॥१२-३१९-१६॥
antarikṣacaraḥ ko'yaṁ tapasā siddhimāgataḥ। adhaḥkāyordhvavaktraś ca netraiḥ samabhivāhyate ॥12-319-16॥
[अन्तरिक्षचरः (antarikṣacaraḥ) - one who moves in the sky; कः (kaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - perfection; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has attained; अधःकायः (adhaḥkāyaḥ) - with body downward; ऊर्ध्ववक्त्रः (ūrdhvavaktraḥ) - with face upward; च (ca) - and; नेत्रैः (netraiḥ) - with eyes; समभिवाह्यते (samabhivāhyate) - is being carried along;]
(One who moves in the sky, who is this, by austerity perfection has attained. With body downward, face upward and with eyes is being carried along.)
Who is this being that moves in the sky, who has attained perfection through austerity? With his body downward, face upward, and carried along by his eyes. (12-319-16)
ततः परमधीरात्मा त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतः। भास्करं समुदीक्षन्स प्राङ्मुखो वाग्यतोऽगमत् ॥ शब्देनाकाशमखिलं पूरयन्निव सर्वतः ॥१२-३१९-१७॥
tataḥ paramadhīrātmā triṣu lokeṣu viśrutaḥ। bhāskaraṃ samudīkṣan prāṅmukho vāgyato'gamata ॥ śabdenākāśamakhilaṃ pūrayanniva sarvataḥ ॥12-319-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; परमधीरात्मा (paramadhīrātmā) - the one whose self is supremely steadfast; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in worlds; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - famous; भास्करं (bhāskaram) - the sun; समुदीक्षन् (samudīkṣan) - looking intently; प्राङ्मुखः (prāṅmukhaḥ) - facing east; वाग्यतः (vāgyataḥ) - having restrained speech; अगमत् (agamat) - he went; शब्देन (śabdena) - with sound; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - sky; अखिलम् (akhilam) - entire; पूरयन् (pūrayann) - filling; इव (iva) - as if; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - everywhere;]
(Then the one whose self is supremely steadfast, famous in the three worlds, looking intently at the sun, facing east, having restrained speech, went. With sound, as if filling the entire sky everywhere.)
Then, the supremely steadfast one, renowned in the three worlds, gazed intently at the sun, faced east, and proceeded in silence. His voice seemed to fill the entire sky everywhere. (12-319-17)
तमापतन्तं सहसा दृष्ट्वा सर्वाप्सरोगणाः। सम्भ्रान्तमनसो राजन्नासन्परमविस्मिताः ॥ पञ्चचूडाप्रभृतयो भृशमुत्फुल्ललोचनाः ॥१२-३१९-१८॥
tam āpatantaṃ sahasā dṛṣṭvā sarvāpsarogaṇāḥ। sambhrāntamanaso rājann āsan paramavismitāḥ॥ pañcachūḍāprabhṛtayo bhṛśam utphullalocanāḥ॥12-319-18॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आपतन्तम् (āpatantam) - falling upon; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सर्व (sarva) - all; अप्सरोगणाः (apsarogaṇāḥ) - groups of apsarases; सम्भ्रान्तमनसः (sambhrāntamanasaḥ) - with agitated minds; राजन् (rājan) - O king; आसन् (āsan) - were; परमविस्मिताः (paramavismitāḥ) - greatly astonished; पञ्चचूडा (pañcachūḍā) - Pañcachūḍā; प्रभृतयः (prabhṛtayaḥ) - and others; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; उत्फुल्ललोचनाः (utphullalocanāḥ) - with wide-open eyes;]
(Him falling upon suddenly having seen, all groups of apsarases, with agitated minds, O king, were greatly astonished; Pañcachūḍā and others exceedingly with wide-open eyes.)
O king, when all the groups of apsarases suddenly saw him falling upon them, they became greatly astonished and agitated in mind; Pañcachūḍā and the others had their eyes wide open in amazement. (12-319-18)
दैवतं कतमं ह्येतदुत्तमां गतिमास्थितम्। सुनिश्चितमिहायाति विमुक्तमिव निःस्पृहम् ॥१२-३१९-१९॥
daivataṃ katamaṃ hy etad uttamāṃ gatim āsthitam। suniścitam iha āyāti vimuktam iva niḥspṛham ॥12-319-19॥
[दैवतं (daivataṃ) - divine being; कतमं (katamaṃ) - which; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etad) - this; उत्तमां (uttamāṃ) - highest; गतिम् (gatim) - state; आस्थितम् (āsthitam) - attained; सुनिश्चितम् (suniścitam) - certain; इह (iha) - here; आयाति (āyāti) - comes; विमुक्तम् (vimuktam) - liberated; इव (iva) - like; निःस्पृहम् (niḥspṛham) - free from desire;]
(Which divine being, indeed, having attained this highest state, comes here certainly, like one liberated, free from desire?)
Which deity, indeed, having attained this highest state, comes here with certainty, like one liberated and free from desire? (12-319-19)
ततः समतिचक्राम मलयं नाम पर्वतम्। उर्वशी पूर्वचित्तिश्च यं नित्यमुपसेवते ॥ ते स्म ब्रह्मर्षिपुत्रस्य विस्मयं ययतुः परम् ॥१२-३१९-२०॥
tataḥ samaticakrāma malayaṃ nāma parvatam। urvaśī pūrvacittiś ca yaṃ nityam upasevate ॥ te sma brahmarṣiputrasya vismayaṃ yayatuḥ param ॥12-319-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; समतिचक्राम (samaticakrāma) - completely crossed over; मलयं (malayaṃ) - Malaya; (name of a mountain); नाम (nāma) - named; called; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - mountain; उर्वशी (urvaśī) - Urvaśī; (name of an apsaras); पूर्वचित्तिः (pūrvacittiḥ) - Pūrvacitti; (name of an apsaras); च (ca) - and; यं (yaṃ) - whom; which; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; constantly; उपसेवते (upasevate) - attend upon; serve; ते (te) - they; स्म (sma) - indeed; truly; ब्रह्मर्षिपुत्रस्य (brahmarṣiputrasya) - of the son of the Brahmarṣi; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - astonishment; wonder; ययतुः (yayatuḥ) - attained; reached; परम् (param) - supreme; highest;]
(Then he completely crossed over the mountain named Malaya. Urvaśī and Pūrvacitti, whom always attend upon it. They indeed attained supreme astonishment of the son of the Brahmarṣi. (12-319-20))
Then he crossed over the mountain called Malaya. Urvaśī and Pūrvacitti, who always serve there, were filled with great wonder at the son of the Brahmarṣi. (12-319-20)
अहो बुद्धिसमाधानं वेदाभ्यासरते द्विजे। अचिरेणैव कालेन नभश्चरति चन्द्रवत् ॥ पितृशुश्रूषया सिद्धिं सम्प्राप्तोऽयमनुत्तमाम् ॥१२-३१९-२१॥
aho buddhisamādhānaṃ vedābhyāsarate dvije। acireṇaiva kālena nabhaścarati candravat ॥ pitṛśuśrūṣayā siddhiṃ samprāpto'yamanuttamām ॥12-319-21॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; बुद्धि (buddhi) - intellect; समाधानं (samādhānam) - concentration; वेद (veda) - Veda; अभ्यास (abhyāsa) - practice; रते (rate) - engaged; द्विजे (dvije) - in the twice-born; अचिरेण (acireṇa) - in a short time; एव (eva) - indeed; कालेन (kālena) - by time; नभः (nabhaḥ) - sky; चरति (carati) - moves; चन्द्रवत् (candravat) - like the moon; पितृ (pitṛ) - father; शुश्रूषया (śuśrūṣayā) - by service; सिद्धिं (siddhim) - perfection; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - attained; अयम् (ayam) - this; अनुत्तमाम् (anuttamām) - the highest;]
(Indeed, intellect concentration Veda practice engaged in the twice-born; in a short time indeed by time in the sky moves like the moon. By service to the father, perfection attained this (one) the highest.)
Indeed, when a twice-born is engaged in Vedic study with concentrated intellect, in a short time he rises in the world like the moon in the sky. By serving his father, he has attained the highest perfection. (12-319-21)
पितृभक्तो दृढतपाः पितुः सुदयितः सुतः। अनन्यमनसा तेन कथं पित्रा विवर्जितः ॥१२-३१९-२२॥
pitṛbhakto dṛḍhatapāḥ pituḥ sudayitaḥ sutaḥ। ananyamanasā tena kathaṃ pitrā vivarjitaḥ ॥12-319-22॥
[पितृभक्तः (pitṛbhaktaḥ) - devoted to the father; दृढतपाः (dṛḍhatapāḥ) - firm in austerity; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; सुदयितः (sudayitaḥ) - very beloved; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; अनन्यमनसा (ananyamanasā) - with undistracted mind; तेन (tena) - by him; कथम् (katham) - how; पित्रा (pitrā) - by the father; विवर्जितः (vivarjitaḥ) - deprived;]
(Devoted to the father, firm in austerity, of the father, very beloved, son, with undistracted mind, by him, how, by the father, deprived. (12-319-22))
He, the son who was devoted to his father, firm in austerity, and very beloved by his father, with an undistracted mind—how was he deprived by his father? (12-319-22)
उर्वश्या वचनं श्रुत्वा शुकः परमधर्मवित्। उदैक्षत दिशः सर्वा वचने गतमानसः ॥१२-३१९-२३॥
urvaśyā vacanaṃ śrutvā śukaḥ paramadharmavit। udaikṣata diśaḥ sarvā vacane gatamānasaḥ ॥12-319-23॥
[उर्वश्या (urvaśyā) - of Urvaśī; वचनं (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; परमधर्मवित् (paramadharmavit) - knower of supreme dharma; उदैक्षत (udaikṣata) - looked up; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; वचने (vacane) - in the speech; गतमानसः (gatamānasaḥ) - whose mind had gone;]
(Having heard the speech of Urvaśī, Śuka, knower of supreme dharma, looked up at all directions, his mind gone into the speech.)
When Śuka, the knower of supreme dharma, heard Urvaśī's words, his mind absorbed in her speech, he looked all around. (12-319-23)
सोऽन्तरिक्षं महीं चैव सशैलवनकाननाम्। आलोकयामास तदा सरांसि सरितस्तथा ॥१२-३१९-२४॥
so'ntarikṣaṃ mahīṃ caiva saśailavanakānanām। ālokayāmāsa tadā sarāṃsi saritastathā ॥12-319-24॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अन्तरिक्षम् (antarikṣam) - mid-space; (sky; atmosphere;) महीम् (mahīm) - earth; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; स-शैल-वन-काननाम् (sa-śaila-vana-kānanām) - with-mountains-forests-groves; आलोकयामास (ālokayāmāsa) - he gazed upon; तदा (tadā) - then; सरांसि (sarāṃsi) - lakes; सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; तथा (tathā) - also; likewise;]
(He mid-space earth and indeed with-mountains-forests-groves he gazed upon then lakes rivers also.)
He then gazed upon the mid-space and the earth, with its mountains, forests, and groves, as well as the lakes and rivers. (12-319-24)
ततो द्वैपायनसुतं बहुमानपुरःसरम्। कृताञ्जलिपुटाः सर्वा निरीक्षन्ते स्म देवताः ॥१२-३१९-२५॥
tato dvaipāyanasutaṃ bahumānapuraḥsaram। kṛtāñjalipuṭāḥ sarvā nirīkṣante sma devatāḥ ॥12-319-25॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्वैपायनसुतम् (dvaipāyanasutam) - son of Dvaipāyana; बहुमानपुरःसरम् (bahumānapuraḥsaram) - preceded by great respect; कृताञ्जलिपुटाः (kṛtāñjalipuṭāḥ) - with folded hands; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all (feminine); निरीक्षन्ते (nirīkṣante) - looked at; स्म (sma) - indeed; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the deities;]
(Then the son of Dvaipāyana, preceded by great respect, with folded hands, all (the goddesses) indeed looked at, the deities.)
Then, with great respect, all the goddesses with folded hands gazed upon the son of Dvaipāyana; the deities indeed looked at him. (12-319-25)
अब्रवीत्तास्तदा वाक्यं शुकः परमधर्मवित्। पिता यद्यनुगच्छेन्मां क्रोशमानः शुकेति वै ॥१२-३१९-२६॥
abravīttās tadā vākyaṃ śukaḥ paramadharmavit। pitā yady anugacchen māṃ krośamānaḥ śuketi vai ॥12-319-26॥
[अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he spoke; ताः (tāḥ) - to them (feminine); तदा (tadā) - then; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; परमधर्मवित् (paramadharmavit) - knower of supreme dharma; पिता (pitā) - father; यदि (yadi) - if; अनुगच्छेत् (anugacchet) - should follow; माम् (mām) - me; क्रोशमानः (krośamānaḥ) - calling out; शुकेति (śuketi) - ‘Śuka’ thus; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(He spoke to them then speech Śuka knower of supreme dharma; father if should follow me calling out ‘Śuka’ thus indeed.)
Śuka, the knower of supreme dharma, then spoke these words to them: "If my father follows me, calling out 'Śuka', indeed." (12-319-26)
ततः प्रतिवचो देयं सर्वैरेव समाहितैः। एतन्मे स्नेहतः सर्वे वचनं कर्तुमर्हथ ॥१२-३१९-२७॥
tataḥ prativaco deyaṃ sarvaireva samāhitaiḥ। etanme snehataḥ sarve vacanaṃ kartumarhatha ॥12-319-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रतिवचः (prativacaḥ) - reply; देयम् (deyam) - should be given; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; एव (eva) - indeed; समाहितैः (samāhitaiḥ) - by those who are attentive; एतत् (etat) - this; मे (me) - to me; स्नेहतः (snehataḥ) - out of affection; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हथ (arhatha) - you ought;]
(Then, a reply should be given by all indeed, by those who are attentive. This, to me, out of affection, all, the word, to do, you ought. (12-319-27))
Therefore, all of you who are attentive should give a reply. Out of affection for me, all of you ought to speak these words. (12-319-27)
शुकस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा दिशः सवनकाननाः। समुद्राः सरितः शैलाः प्रत्यूचुस्तं समन्ततः ॥१२-३१९-२८॥
śukasya vacanaṃ śrutvā diśaḥ savanakānanāḥ। samudrāḥ saritaḥ śailāḥ pratyūcustam samantataḥ ॥12-319-28॥
[शुकस्य (śukasya) - of Śuka; वचनं (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सवनकाननाः (savanakānanāḥ) - with sacrificial forests; समुद्राः (samudrāḥ) - oceans; सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; शैलाः (śailāḥ) - mountains; प्रत्यूचु (pratyūcu) - replied; तं (tam) - to him; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - from all sides;]
(Having heard the speech of Śuka, the directions with sacrificial forests, oceans, rivers, and mountains replied to him from all sides.)
When they heard Śuka's words, the directions with their sacrificial forests, the oceans, rivers, and mountains all responded to him from every side. (12-319-28)
यथाज्ञापयसे विप्र बाढमेवं भविष्यति। ऋषेर्व्याहरतो वाक्यं प्रतिवक्ष्यामहे वयम् ॥१२-३१९-२९॥
yathājñāpayase vipra bāḍhamevaṃ bhaviṣyati। ṛṣervyāharato vākyaṃ prativakṣyāmahe vayam ॥12-319-29॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; according to; आज्ञापयसे (ājñāpayase) - you instruct; you command; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; O wise one; बाढम् (bāḍham) - indeed; certainly; एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - it will be; it shall happen; ऋषेः (ṛṣeḥ) - of the sage; व्याहरतः (vyāharataḥ) - speaking; uttering; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - statement; sentence; प्रतिवक्ष्यामहे (prativakṣyāmahe) - we shall reply; we will answer; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(As you instruct, O brāhmaṇa, indeed thus it will be. To the statement uttered by the sage, we shall reply.)
O brāhmaṇa, as you command, so it shall certainly be. We will respond to the statement spoken by the sage. (12-319-29)
