Bhishma said.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा वचनं ब्रह्मर्षिः सुमहातपाः। प्रातिष्ठत शुकः सिद्धिं हित्वा लोकांश्चतुर्विधान् ॥१२-३२०-१॥
ityevam uktvā vacanaṃ brahmarṣiḥ sumahātapāḥ। prātiṣṭhata śukaḥ siddhiṃ hitvā lokāṃś caturvidhān ॥12-320-1॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this manner; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; ब्रह्मर्षिः (brahmarṣiḥ) - the sage of the highest order; सुमहातपाः (sumahātapāḥ) - of great austerity; प्रातिष्ठत (prātiṣṭhata) - departed; शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - perfection; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; चतुर्विधान् (caturvidhān) - of four kinds;]
(Thus, having spoken this speech, the sage of the highest order, of great austerity, Śuka, having abandoned perfection and the four kinds of worlds, departed.)
Having thus spoken these words, the great sage of immense austerity, Śuka, renounced perfection and the four types of worlds and departed. (12-320-1)
तमो ह्यष्टविधं हित्वा जहौ पञ्चविधं रजः। ततः सत्त्वं जहौ धीमांस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥१२-३२०-२॥
tamo hyaṣṭavidhaṃ hitvā jahau pañcavidhaṃ rajaḥ। tataḥ sattvaṃ jahau dhīmāṃs tad adbhutam ivābhavat ॥12-320-2॥
[तमः (tamaḥ) - darkness; (ignorance); हि (hi) - indeed; अष्टविधं (aṣṭavidham) - eightfold; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; जहौ (jahau) - he gave up; पञ्चविधं (pañcavidham) - fivefold; रजः (rajaḥ) - passion; (activity); ततः (tataḥ) - then; सत्त्वं (sattvam) - goodness; (purity); जहौ (jahau) - he gave up; धीमाञ् (dhīmān) - the wise one; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Darkness indeed eightfold having abandoned, he gave up the fivefold passion. Then goodness he gave up, the wise one; that wonderful as if became.)
Having abandoned the eightfold darkness, he gave up the fivefold passion. Then the wise one gave up goodness as well; it was as if something wonderful happened. (12-320-2)
ततस्तस्मिन्पदे नित्ये निर्गुणे लिङ्गवर्जिते। ब्रह्मणि प्रत्यतिष्ठत्स विधूमोऽग्निरिव ज्वलन् ॥१२-३२०-३॥
tatastasminpade nitye nirguṇe liṅgavarjite। brahmaṇi pratyatiṣṭhatsa vidhūmo'gniriva jvalan ॥12-320-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; पदे (pade) - state; नित्ये (nitye) - eternal; निर्गुणे (nirguṇe) - devoid of qualities; लिङ्गवर्जिते (liṅgavarjite) - free from characteristics; ब्रह्मणि (brahmaṇi) - in Brahman; प्रत्यतिष्ठत् (pratyatiṣṭhat) - stood firm; सः (saḥ) - he; विधूमः (vidhūmaḥ) - smokeless; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; इव (iva) - like; ज्वलन् (jvalan) - shining;]
(Then in that state, eternal, devoid of qualities, free from characteristics, in Brahman, he stood firm, like a smokeless fire, shining.)
Then, in that eternal, qualityless, and characteristicless state of Brahman, he stood firm, shining like a smokeless fire. (12-320-3)
उलकापाता दिशां दाहा भूमिकम्पास्तथैव च। प्रादुर्भूताः क्षणे तस्मिंस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥१२-३२०-४॥
ulkāpātā diśāṃ dāhā bhūmikampās tathaiva ca। prādurbhūtāḥ kṣaṇe tasmiṃs tadadbhutam ivābhavat ॥12-320-4॥
[उलकापाता (ulkāpātāḥ) - meteors; (falling) दिशां (diśām) - of the directions; दाहा (dāhāḥ) - burnings; भूमिकम्पाः (bhūmikampāḥ) - earthquakes; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; प्रादुर्भूताः (prādurbhūtāḥ) - appeared; क्षणे (kṣaṇe) - in the moment; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तदद्भुतम् (tadadbhutam) - that wonder; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Meteors (fell), burnings of the directions, earthquakes likewise and appeared in that moment; that wonder as if became.)
Meteors fell, the directions burned, and earthquakes occurred likewise; all these appeared at that moment, and it seemed as if a wonder had happened. (12-320-4)
द्रुमाः शाखाश्च मुमुचुः शिखराणि च पर्वताः। निर्घातशब्दैश्च गिरिर्हिमवान्दीर्यतीव ह ॥१२-३२०-५॥
drumāḥ śākhāś ca mumucuḥ śikharāṇi ca parvatāḥ। nirghātaśabdaiś ca giriḥ himavān dīryatīva ha ॥12-320-5॥
[द्रुमाः (drumāḥ) - trees; शाखाः (śākhāḥ) - branches; च (ca) - and; मुमुचुः (mumucuḥ) - let loose; शिखराणि (śikharāṇi) - peaks; च (ca) - and; पर्वताः (parvatāḥ) - mountains; निर्घातशब्दैः (nirghātaśabdaiḥ) - by thunderous sounds; च (ca) - and; गिरिः (giriḥ) - mountain; हिमवान् (himavān) - Himavat; दीर्यतीव (dīryatīva) - as if splitting; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Trees, branches and let loose, peaks and mountains; by thunderous sounds and the mountain Himavat as if splitting indeed.)
The trees and branches broke off, and the peaks and mountains were loosened; by the thunderous sounds, the mountain Himavat seemed as if it were splitting apart indeed. (12-320-5)
न बभासे सहस्रांशुर्न जज्वाल च पावकः। ह्रदाश्च सरितश्चैव चुक्षुभुः सागरास्तथा ॥१२-३२०-६॥
na babhāse sahasrāṃśur na jajvāla ca pāvakaḥ। hradāś ca saritaś caiva cukṣubhuḥ sāgarās tathā ॥12-320-6॥
[न (na) - not; बभासे (babhāse) - shone; सहस्रांशुः (sahasrāṃśuḥ) - the thousand-rayed (sun); न (na) - not; जज्वाल (jajvāla) - blazed; च (ca) - and; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - fire; ह्रदाः (hradāḥ) - lakes; च (ca) - and; सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; चुक्षुभुः (cukṣubhuḥ) - were agitated; सागराः (sāgarāḥ) - oceans; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Not shone the thousand-rayed (sun), not blazed and fire; lakes and rivers indeed were agitated, oceans likewise. (12-320-6))
The thousand-rayed sun did not shine, nor did the fire blaze; the lakes and rivers were agitated, and so too were the oceans. (12-320-6)
ववर्ष वासवस्तोयं रसवच्च सुगन्धि च। ववौ समीरणश्चापि दिव्यगन्धवहः शुचिः ॥१२-३२०-७॥
vavarṣa vāsavasto yaṁ rasavacca sugandhi ca। vavau samīraṇaś cāpi divyagandhavahaḥ śuciḥ ॥12-320-7॥
[ववर्ष (vavarṣa) - poured; rained; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Indra; तोयम् (toyam) - water; रसवत् (rasavat) - like nectar; च (ca) - and; सुगन्धि (sugandhi) - fragrant; च (ca) - and; ववौ (vavau) - blew; समीरणः (samīraṇaḥ) - wind; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; दिव्यगन्धवहः (divyagandhavahaḥ) - carrying divine fragrance; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure;]
(Indra poured water like nectar and fragrant; and the wind also blew, pure, carrying divine fragrance;)
Indra rained fragrant water like nectar, and the pure wind also blew, carrying a divine fragrance. (12-320-7)
स शृङ्गेऽप्रतिमे दिव्ये हिमवन्मेरुसम्भवे। संश्लिष्टे श्वेतपीते द्वे रुक्मरूप्यमये शुभे ॥१२-३२०-८॥
sa śṛṅge'pratime divye himavanmerusambhave। saṃśliṣṭe śvetapīte dve rukmarūpyamaye śubhe ॥12-320-8॥
[स (sa) - he; शृङ्गे (śṛṅge) - in the peak; अप्रतिमे (apratime) - unrivaled; दिव्ये (divye) - divine; हिमवन्मेरुसम्भवे (himavanmerusambhave) - originating from Himavat and Meru; संश्लिष्टे (saṃśliṣṭe) - joined together; श्वेतपीते (śvetapīte) - white and yellow; द्वे (dve) - two; रुक्मरूप्यमये (rukmarūpyamaye) - made of gold and silver; शुभे (śubhe) - auspicious;]
(He, in the unrivaled, divine peak, originating from Himavat and Meru, joined together, two (peaks) white and yellow, made of gold and silver, auspicious.)

शतयोजनविस्तारे तिर्यगूर्ध्वं च भारत। उदीचीं दिशमाश्रित्य रुचिरे संददर्श ह ॥१२-३२०-९॥
śatayojanavistāre tiryagūrdhvaṃ ca bhārata। udīcīṃ diśamāśritya rucire saṃdadarśa ha ॥12-320-9॥
[शत (śata) - hundred; योजन (yojana) - yojana (a measure of distance); विस्तारे (vistāre) - in expanse; तिर्यक् (tiryak) - across; horizontally; ऊर्ध्वं (ūrdhvaṃ) - upwards; vertically; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; उदीचीं (udīcīṃ) - northern; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; having taken refuge in; रुचिरे (rucire) - beautiful; splendid; संददर्श (saṃdadarśa) - he saw; he beheld; ह (ha) - indeed; surely;]
(In an expanse of a hundred yojanas, across and upwards, O Bhārata, having resorted to the beautiful northern direction, he indeed saw.)
O Bhārata, in the beautiful northern direction, extending a hundred yojanas across and upwards, he indeed beheld it. (12-320-9)
सोऽविशङ्केन मनसा तथैवाभ्यपतच्छुकः। ततः पर्वतशृङ्गे द्वे सहसैव द्विधाकृते ॥ अदृश्येतां महाराज तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥१२-३२०-१०॥
so'aviśaṅkena manasā tathaivābhyapatac chukaḥ। tataḥ parvataśṛṅge dve sahasaiva dvidhākṛte ॥ adṛśyetāṃ mahārāja tadadbhutamivābhavat ॥12-320-10॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अविशङ्केन (aviśaṅkena) - without doubt; मनसा (manasā) - with mind; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; अभ्यपतत् (abhyapatat) - approached; शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पर्वतशृङ्गे (parvataśṛṅge) - mountain peaks; द्वे (dve) - two; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; एव (eva) - indeed; द्विधा (dvidhā) - in two; कृते (kṛte) - made; अदृश्येताम् (adṛśyetām) - were seen; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(He, with a mind free from doubt, just so Śuka approached. Then, O great king, the two mountain peaks were suddenly indeed made into two; they were seen; that became as if wonderful.)
He, with a mind free from doubt, Śuka approached in the same way. Then, O great king, the two mountain peaks were suddenly split in two; they appeared, and that seemed truly wondrous. (12-320-10)
ततः पर्वतशृङ्गाभ्यां सहसैव विनिःसृतः। न च प्रतिजघानास्य स गतिं पर्वतोत्तमः ॥१२-३२०-११॥
tataḥ parvataśṛṅgābhyāṃ sahasaiva viniḥsṛtaḥ। na ca pratijaghānāsya sa gatiṃ parvatottamaḥ ॥12-320-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पर्वतशृङ्गाभ्यां (parvataśṛṅgābhyām) - from the two mountain peaks; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; एव (eva) - indeed; विनिःसृतः (viniḥsṛtaḥ) - emerged out; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; प्रतिजघान (pratijaghāna) - struck against; अस्य (asya) - his; सः (saḥ) - he; गतिम् (gatim) - movement; पर्वतोत्तमः (parvatottamaḥ) - the best of mountains;]
(Then, from the two mountain peaks, suddenly indeed he emerged out; and the best of mountains did not strike against his movement.)
Then, suddenly he emerged from between the two mountain peaks, and the best of mountains did not obstruct his movement. (12-320-11)
ततो महानभूच्छब्दो दिवि सर्वदिवौकसाम्। गन्धर्वाणामृषीणां च ये च शैलनिवासिनः ॥१२-३२०-१२॥
tato mahānabhūcchabdo divi sarvadivaukasām। gandharvāṇāmṛṣīṇāṃ ca ye ca śailanivāsinaḥ ॥12-320-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; महान् (mahān) - great; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; दिवि (divi) - in the sky; सर्व (sarva) - all; दिवौकसाम् (divaukasām) - of the dwellers in heaven; गन्धर्वाणाम् (gandharvāṇām) - of the Gandharvas; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the Ṛṣis; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; शैलनिवासिनः (śailanivāsinaḥ) - mountain-dwellers;]
(Then a great sound arose in the sky of all the dwellers in heaven, of the Gandharvas, of the Ṛṣis, and of those who dwell in the mountains.)
Then a great sound arose in the sky among all the dwellers of heaven, the Gandharvas, the Ṛṣis, and those who live in the mountains. (12-320-12)
दृष्ट्वा शुकमतिक्रान्तं पर्वतं च द्विधाकृतम्। साधु साध्विति तत्रासीन्नादः सर्वत्र भारत ॥१२-३२०-१३॥
dṛṣṭvā śukam atikrāntaṃ parvataṃ ca dvidhākṛtam। sādhu sādhu iti tatra āsīn nādaḥ sarvatra bhārata ॥12-320-13॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; शुकम् (śukam) - Śuka; अतिक्रान्तम् (atikrāntam) - having crossed; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - mountain; च (ca) - and; द्विधा (dvidhā) - in two; कृतम् (kṛtam) - made; साधु (sādhu) - well done; साधु (sādhu) - well done; इति (iti) - thus; तत्र (tatra) - there; आसीत् (āsīt) - arose; नादः (nādaḥ) - sound; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Having seen Śuka having crossed and the mountain made in two, "Well done, well done" thus there arose sound everywhere, O Bhārata (12-320-13))
O Bhārata, seeing that Śuka had crossed and split the mountain in two, a cry of "Well done, well done" arose everywhere. (12-320-13)
स पूज्यमानो देवैश्च गन्धर्वैरृषिभिस्तथा। यक्षराक्षससङ्घैश्च विद्याधरगणैस्तथा ॥१२-३२०-१४॥
sa pūjyamāno devaiś ca gandharvair ṛṣibhiḥ tathā। yakṣa-rākṣasa-saṅghaiś ca vidyādhara-gaṇaiḥ tathā ॥12-320-14॥
[स (sa) - he; पूज्यमानः (pūjyamānaḥ) - being worshipped; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; च (ca) - and; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by the gandharvas; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by the sages; तथा (tathā) - likewise; यक्षराक्षससङ्घैः (yakṣa-rākṣasa-saṅghaiḥ) - by the hosts of yakṣas and rākṣasas; च (ca) - and; विद्याधरगणैः (vidyādhara-gaṇaiḥ) - by the groups of vidyādharas; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(He, being worshipped by the gods and by the gandharvas, by the sages likewise, by the hosts of yakṣas and rākṣasas and by the groups of vidyādharas likewise. (12-320-14))
He was worshipped by the gods, gandharvas, sages, as well as by the hosts of yakṣas, rākṣasas, and the groups of vidyādharas. (12-320-14)
दिव्यैः पुष्पैः समाकीर्णमन्तरिक्षं समन्ततः। आसीत्किल महाराज शुकाभिपतने तदा ॥१२-३२०-१५॥
divyaiḥ puṣpaiḥ samākīrṇam antarikṣaṃ samantataḥ। āsīt kila mahārāja śukābhipatane tadā ॥12-320-15॥
[दिव्यैः (divyaiḥ) - by divine; पुष्पैः (puṣpaiḥ) - flowers; समाकीर्णम् (samākīrṇam) - covered; अन्तरिक्षम् (antarikṣam) - sky; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; किल (kila) - indeed; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; शुक-अभिपतने (śuka-abhipatane) - at the descent of the parrot; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(By divine flowers covered the sky on all sides was indeed, O great king, at the descent of the parrot then.)
O great king, at that time, when the parrot descended, the sky was indeed covered on all sides with divine flowers. (12-320-15)
ततो मन्दाकिनीं रम्यामुपरिष्टादभिव्रजन्। शुको ददर्श धर्मात्मा पुष्पितद्रुमकाननाम् ॥१२-३२०-१६॥
tato mandākinīṃ ramyām upariṣṭād abhivrajan। śuko dadarśa dharmātmā puṣpitadrumakān anām॥12-320-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मन्दाकिनीम् (mandākinīm) - Mandakini (the river); रम्याम् (ramyām) - beautiful; उपरिष्टात् (upariṣṭāt) - from above; अभिव्रजन् (abhivrajan) - approaching; शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka (the sage); ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; पुष्पितद्रुमकाननाम् (puṣpitadrumakān anām) - of blossoming trees, delightful;]
(Then Mandakini, beautiful, from above, approaching, Śuka saw, righteous-souled, of blossoming trees, delightful.)
Then the righteous-souled Śuka, approaching from above, saw the beautiful Mandakini, delightful with blossoming trees. (12-320-16)
तस्यां क्रीडन्त्यभिरताः स्नान्ति चैवाप्सरोगणाः। शून्याकारं निराकाराः शुकं दृष्ट्वा विवाससः ॥१२-३२०-१७॥
tasyāṃ krīḍanty abhiratāḥ snānti caiva apsarogaṇāḥ। śūnyākāraṃ nirākārāḥ śukaṃ dṛṣṭvā vivāsasaḥ ॥12-320-17॥
[तस्याम् (tasyām) - in her; क्रीडन्ति (krīḍanti) - they play; अभिरताः (abhiratāḥ) - delighted; स्नान्ति (snānti) - they bathe; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अप्सरोगणाः (apsarogaṇāḥ) - groups of apsarases; शून्याकारम् (śūnyākāram) - having the form of emptiness; निराकाराः (nirākārāḥ) - formless; शुकम् (śukam) - Shuka; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; विवाससः (vivāsasaḥ) - without clothing;]
(In her, delighted, they play, they bathe, and indeed groups of apsarases; having the form of emptiness, formless, Shuka, having seen, without clothing.)
There, delighted, groups of apsarases play and bathe; seeing Shuka, who was formless and appeared as emptiness, without clothing. (12-320-17)
तं प्रक्रमन्तमाज्ञाय पिता स्नेहसमन्वितः। उत्तमां गतिमास्थाय पृष्ठतोऽनुससार ह ॥१२-३२०-१८॥
taṃ prakramantam ājñāya pitā sneha-samanvitaḥ। uttamāṃ gatim āsthāya pṛṣṭhataḥ anusasāra ha ॥12-320-18॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; प्रक्रमन्तम् (prakramantam) - setting forth; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having perceived; पिता (pitā) - father; स्नेहसमन्वितः (sneha-samanvitaḥ) - endowed with affection; उत्तमां (uttamāṃ) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - path; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having taken; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; अनुससार (anusasāra) - followed; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Him setting forth having perceived, father endowed with affection, supreme path having taken, from behind followed indeed.)
Seeing him set forth, the father, filled with affection, took the supreme path and followed behind him indeed. (12-320-18)
शुकस्तु मारुतादूर्ध्वं गतिं कृत्वान्तरिक्षगाम्। दर्शयित्वा प्रभावं स्वं सर्वभूतोऽभवत्तदा ॥१२-३२०-१९॥
śukas tu mārutād ūrdhvaṃ gatiṃ kṛtvāntarikṣagām। darśayitvā prabhāvaṃ svaṃ sarvabhūto'bhavat tadā ॥12-320-19॥
[शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; (the sage Śuka); तु (tu) - but; मारुतात् (mārutāt) - from wind; (from the wind god or wind); ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upwards; गतिम् (gatim) - movement; (motion, path); कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; (having done); अन्तरिक्षगाम् (antarikṣagām) - going through the sky; (moving in the atmosphere); दर्शयित्वा (darśayitvā) - having shown; प्रभावम् (prabhāvam) - power; (might, influence); स्वम् (svam) - his own; सर्वभूतः (sarvabhūtaḥ) - all-being; (one with all beings); अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Śuka but from wind upwards movement having made going through the sky, having shown power his own, all-being became then.)
But Śuka, having ascended upwards from the wind and moved through the sky, having displayed his own power, then became one with all beings. (12-320-19)
महायोगगतिं त्वग्र्यां व्यासोत्थाय महातपाः। निमेषान्तरमात्रेण शुकाभिपतनं ययौ ॥१२-३२०-२०॥
mahāyogagatiṃ tvagryāṃ vyāsotthāya mahātapāḥ। nimeṣāntaramātreṇa śukābhipatanaṃ yayau ॥12-320-20॥
[महायोगगतिं (mahāyogagatiṃ) - great-yoga-state; त्व (tva) - but; अग्र्यां (agryām) - supreme; व्यासोत्थाय (vyāsotthāya) - having risen from Vyāsa; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the great ascetic; निमेषान्तरमात्रेण (nimeṣāntaramātreṇa) - within the measure of the interval of a blink; शुकाभिपतनं (śukābhipatanam) - the flight of Śuka; ययौ (yayau) - he went;]
(The great ascetic, having risen from Vyāsa, but to the supreme great-yoga-state, within the measure of the interval of a blink, went to the flight of Śuka. (12-320-20))
The great ascetic, having risen from Vyāsa, in but the briefest instant, attained the supreme state of great yoga, following the path of Śuka. (12-320-20)

शुकः सर्वगतो भूत्वा सर्वात्मा सर्वतोमुखः। प्रत्यभाषत धर्मात्मा भोःशब्देनानुनादयन् ॥१२-३२०-२३॥

ततः प्रभृति चाद्यापि शब्दानुच्चारितान्पृथक्। गिरिगह्वरपृष्ठेषु व्याजहार शुकं प्रति ॥१२-३२०-२५॥
tataḥ prabhṛti cādyāpi śabdān uccāritān pṛthak। giri-gahvara-pṛṣṭheṣu vyājahāra śukaṃ prati ॥12-320-25॥

mahimānaṃ tu taṃ dṛṣṭvā putrasyāmitatejasaḥ। niṣasāda giriprasthe putramevānucintayan ॥12-320-27॥

(From there, on the bank of the Mandākinī, the groups of apsarases playing, having approached that sage, all became agitated, having lost awareness.)

जले निलिल्यिरे काश्चित्काश्चिद्गुल्मान्प्रपेदिरे। वसनान्याददुः काश्चिद्दृष्ट्वा तं मुनिसत्तमम् ॥१२-३२०-२९॥
jale nililyire kāścit kāścid gulmān prapedire। vasanāni ādaduh kāścit dṛṣṭvā taṃ munisattamam ॥12-320-29॥

तां मुक्ततां तु विज्ञाय मुनिः पुत्रस्य वै तदा। सक्ततामात्मनश्चैव प्रीतोऽभूद्व्रीडितश्च ह ॥१२-३२०-३०॥
tāṃ muktatāṃ tu vijñāya muniḥ putrasya vai tadā। saktatām ātmanaś caiva prīto'bhūd vrīḍitaś ca ha ॥12-320-30॥
[तां (tām) - her; मुक्ततां (muktatām) - freedom; तु (tu) - but; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having known; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; वै (vai) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; सक्तताम् (saktatām) - attachment; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; व्रीडितः (vrīḍitaḥ) - ashamed; च (ca) - and; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Her freedom but having known the sage of the son indeed then, attachment of himself and indeed pleased became, ashamed and indeed.)
But when the sage realized his son's freedom from attachment, and his own attachment, he became both pleased and ashamed. (12-320-30)
तं देवगन्धर्ववृतो महर्षिगणपूजितः। पिनाकहस्तो भगवानभ्यागच्छत शङ्करः ॥१२-३२०-३१॥
taṃ devagandharvavṛto maharṣigaṇapūjitaḥ। pinākahasto bhagavān abhyāgacchata śaṅkaraḥ ॥12-320-31॥

तमुवाच महादेवः सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वचः। पुत्रशोकाभिसन्तप्तं कृष्णद्वैपायनं तदा ॥१२-३२०-३२॥

अग्नेर्भूमेरपां वायोरन्तरिक्षस्य चैव ह। वीर्येण सदृशः पुत्रस्त्वया मत्तः पुरा वृतः ॥१२-३२०-३३॥
agner bhūmer apāṃ vāyor antarikṣasya caiva ha। vīryeṇa sadṛśaḥ putras tvayā mattaḥ purā vṛtaḥ॥12-320-33॥

A son, equal in strength to Agni, earth, waters, Vāyu, and the atmosphere, was formerly chosen by you from me. (12-320-33)
स तथालक्षणो जातस्तपसा तव सम्भृतः। मम चैव प्रभावेन ब्रह्मतेजोमयः शुचिः ॥१२-३२०-३४॥
sa tathālakṣaṇo jātastapasā tava sambhṛtaḥ। mama caiva prabhāvena brahmatejomayaḥ śuciḥ ॥12-320-34॥

(He thus-characterized born by austerity your produced; my and indeed by power consisting of Brahman’s radiance pure; ॥12-320-34॥)
He, thus characterized, was born through your austerity, produced by you; and by my power, he is pure, composed of the radiance of Brahman. (12-320-34)
स गतिं परमां प्राप्तो दुष्प्रापामजितेन्द्रियैः। दैवतैरपि विप्रर्षे तं त्वं किमनुशोचसि ॥१२-३२०-३५॥
sa gatiṃ paramāṃ prāpto duṣprāpāmajitendriyaiḥ। daivatairapi viprarṣe taṃ tvaṃ kimanuśocasi ॥12-320-35॥
[स (sa) - he; गतिं (gatiṃ) - state; परमां (paramāṃ) - supreme; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; दुष्प्रापाम् (duṣprāpām) - difficult to attain; अजितेन्द्रियैः (ajitendriyaiḥ) - by those whose senses are not conquered; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O sage among the twice-born; तं (taṃ) - him; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; किम् (kim) - why; अनुशोचसि (anuśocasi) - do you grieve;]
(He state supreme attained difficult to attain by those whose senses are not conquered; by the gods even O sage among the twice-born; him you why do you grieve; (12-320-35))
He has attained the supreme state, which is difficult to attain even for those whose senses are not conquered, even by the gods, O sage among the twice-born; why do you grieve for him? (12-320-35)
यावत्स्थास्यन्ति गिरयो यावत्स्थास्यन्ति सागराः। तावत्तवाक्षया कीर्तिः सपुत्रस्य भविष्यति ॥१२-३२०-३६॥
yāvatsthāsyanti girayo yāvatsthāsyanti sāgarāḥ। tāvattavākṣayā kīrtiḥ saputrasya bhaviṣyati ॥12-320-36॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; स्थास्यन्ति (sthāsyanti) - will stand; गिरयः (girayaḥ) - mountains; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; स्थास्यन्ति (sthāsyanti) - will stand; सागराः (sāgarāḥ) - oceans; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; तव (tava) - your; अक्षया (akṣayā) - imperishable; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; सपुत्रस्य (saputrasya) - with son; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(As long as the mountains will stand, as long as the oceans will stand, so long your imperishable fame with son will be.)
Your imperishable fame, along with your son, will endure as long as the mountains and oceans exist. (12-320-36)
छायां स्वपुत्रसदृशीं सर्वतोऽनपगां सदा। द्रक्ष्यसे त्वं च लोकेऽस्मिन्मत्प्रसादान्महामुने ॥१२-३२०-३७॥
chāyāṃ svaputrasadṛśīṃ sarvato'napagāṃ sadā। drakṣyase tvaṃ ca loke'smin matprasādān mahāmune ॥12-320-37॥
[छायाम् (chāyām) - shadow; स्वपुत्रसदृशीम् (svaputrasadṛśīm) - like own son; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; अनपगाम् (anapagām) - not departing; सदा (sadā) - always; द्रक्ष्यसे (drakṣyase) - you will see; त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; मत्प्रसादात् (matprasādāt) - by my grace; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage;]
(A shadow like your own son, from all sides not departing, always; you will see, you also, in this world, by my grace, O great sage.)
O great sage, by my grace, you will always see a shadow like your own son, never departing from you in this world. (12-320-37)
सोऽनुनीतो भगवता स्वयं रुद्रेण भारत। छायां पश्यन्समावृत्तः स मुनिः परया मुदा ॥१२-३२०-३८॥
so'numīto bhagavatā svayaṃ rudreṇa bhārata। chāyāṃ paśyansamāvṛttaḥ sa muniḥ parayā mudā ॥12-320-38॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अनुनीतः (anunītaḥ) - persuaded; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the venerable; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; रुद्रेण (rudreṇa) - by Rudra; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; छायाम् (chāyām) - shadow; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; समावृत्तः (samāvṛttaḥ) - having returned; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; परया (parayā) - with supreme; मुदा (mudā) - joy;]
(He, persuaded by the venerable Rudra himself, O Bhārata, seeing the shadow, having returned, that sage with supreme joy.)
O Bhārata, that sage, having been persuaded by the venerable Rudra himself, returned, and seeing the shadow, was filled with supreme joy. (12-320-38)
इति जन्म गतिश्चैव शुकस्य भरतर्षभ। विस्तरेण मयाख्यातं यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥१२-३२०-३९॥
iti janma gatiś caiva śukasya bharatarṣabha। vistareṇa mayākhyātaṃ yan māṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi ॥12-320-39॥

एतदाचष्ट मे राजन्देवर्षिर्नारदः पुरा। व्यासश्चैव महायोगी सञ्जल्पेषु पदे पदे ॥१२-३२०-४०॥
etad ācaṣṭa me rājan devarṣir nāradaḥ purā। vyāsaś caiva mahāyogī sañjalpeṣu pade pade ॥12-320-40॥

itihāsam imaṁ puṇyaṁ mokṣa-dharmārtha-saṁhitam। dhārayed yaḥ śama-paraḥ sa gacchet paramāṁ gatim ॥12-320-41॥
