गृहस्थो ब्रह्मचारी वा वानप्रस्थोऽथ भिक्षुकः। य इच्छेत्सिद्धिमास्थातुं देवतां कां यजेत सः ॥३-३२१-१॥
gṛhastho brahmacārī vā vānaprastho'tha bhikṣukaḥ। ya icchetsiddhimāsthātuṃ devatāṃ kāṃ yajeta saḥ ॥3-321-1॥
[गृहस्थः (gṛhasthaḥ) - householder; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - celibate student; वा (vā) - or; वानप्रस्थः (vānaprasthaḥ) - forest-dweller; अथ (atha) - or; भिक्षुकः (bhikṣukaḥ) - mendicant; यः (yaḥ) - who; इच्छेत् (icchet) - might wish; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - perfection; आस्थातुम् (āsthātum) - to attain; देवताम् (devatām) - deity; काम् (kām) - which; यजेत् (yajet) - should worship; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Householder, celibate student, or forest-dweller, or mendicant; who might wish perfection to attain, deity which should worship, he.)
Whether a householder, celibate student, forest-dweller, or mendicant—whoever wishes to attain perfection, he should worship whichever deity he desires. (3-321-1)
कुतो ह्यस्य ध्रुवः स्वर्गः कुतो निःश्रेयसं परम्। विधिना केन जुहुयाद्दैवं पित्र्यं तथैव च ॥३-३२१-२॥

(From where indeed for him is certain heaven? From where is the supreme highest good? By what ordinance, by whom should one offer the divine and ancestral (oblations) likewise and also?)
How can there be certain heaven for him? How can there be the highest supreme good? By what ordinance and by whom should one perform the divine and ancestral offerings likewise? (3-321-2)
मुक्तश्च कां गतिं गच्छेन्मोक्षश्चैव किमात्मकः। स्वर्गतश्चैव किं कुर्याद्येन न च्यवते दिवः ॥३-३२१-३॥
muktaś ca kāṃ gatiṃ gacchen mokṣaś caiva kim ātmakaḥ। svargataś caiva kiṃ kuryād yena na cyavate divaḥ ॥3-321-3॥

(Liberated one and which state would attain, liberation and indeed what of what nature; one who has gone to heaven and indeed what should do, by which not falls from heaven.)
What state does a liberated person attain, and what is the nature of liberation? What should one who has reached heaven do so that he does not fall from heaven? (3-321-3)
देवतानां च को देवः पितॄणां च तथा पिता। तस्मात्परतरं यच्च तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥३-३२१-४॥
devatānāṃ ca ko devaḥ pitṝṇāṃ ca tathā pitā। tasmāt parataraṃ yat ca tan me brūhi pitāmaha ॥3-321-4॥

O grandsire, tell me who is the god of the gods and likewise the father of the ancestors, and what is higher than that. (3-321-4)

गूढं मां प्रश्नवित्प्रश्नं पृच्छसे त्वमिहानघ। न ह्येष तर्कया शक्यो वक्तुं वर्षशतैरपि ॥३-३२१-५॥
gūḍhaṃ māṃ praśnavitpraśnaṃ pṛcchase tvamihānagha। na hyeṣa tarkayā śakyo vaktuṃ varṣaśatairapi ॥3-321-5॥

O sinless one, here you ask me a hidden question, a question for the question-knower. Indeed, this cannot be explained by reasoning, even in hundreds of years. (3-321-5)
ऋते देवप्रसादाद्वा राजञ्ज्ञानागमेन वा। गहनं ह्येतदाख्यानं व्याख्यातव्यं तवारिहन् ॥३-३२१-६॥
ṛte devaprasādād vā rājan jñānāgamena vā। gahanaṃ hy etad ākhyānaṃ vyākhyātavyaṃ tavārihan॥3-321-6॥

अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। नारदस्य च संवादमृषेर्नारायणस्य च ॥३-३२१-७॥

तपसा तेजसा चैव दुर्निरीक्षौ सुरैरपि। यस्य प्रसादं कुर्वाते स देवौ द्रष्टुमर्हति ॥३-३२१-१२॥
tapasā tejasā caiva durnirīkṣau surair api। yasya prasādaṃ kurvāte sa devau draṣṭum arhati ॥3-321-12॥

नूनं तयोरनुमते हृदि हृच्छयचोदितः। महामेरोर्गिरेः शृङ्गात्प्रच्युतो गन्धमादनम् ॥३-३२१-१३॥

नारदः सुमहद्भूतं लोकान्सर्वानचीचरत्। तं देशमगमद्राजन्बदर्याश्रममाशुगः ॥३-३२१-१४॥
nāradaḥ sumahadbhūtaṃ lokānsarvānacīcarat। taṃ deśamagamadrājanbadaryāśramamāśugaḥ ॥3-321-14॥

tayor āhnikavelāyāṃ tasya kautūhalaṃ tv abhūt। idaṃ tad āspadaṃ kṛtsnaṃ yasmin lokāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ ॥3-321-15॥

(Of those two, in the daily time, his curiosity indeed arose. This is that entire abode in which the worlds are established. (3-321-15))

सदेवासुरगन्धर्वाः सर्षिकिंनरलेलिहाः। एका मूर्तिरियं पूर्वं जाता भूयश्चतुर्विधा ॥३-३२१-१६॥
sadevāsuragandharvāḥ sarṣikiṁnaralelihāḥ। ekā mūrtiriyaṁ pūrvaṁ jātā bhūyaścaturvidhā ॥3-321-16॥

(With gods, demons, gandharvas, with sages, kinnaras, serpents; one form this formerly arisen, again fourfold.)
Together with the gods, demons, gandharvas, sages, kinnaras, and serpents, this one form that arose formerly has now become fourfold. (3-321-16)
धर्मस्य कुलसन्तानो महानेभिर्विवर्धितः। अहो ह्यनुगृहीतोऽद्य धर्म एभिः सुरैरिह ॥ नरनारायणाभ्यां च कृष्णेन हरिणा तथा ॥३-३२१-१७॥
dharmasya kulasantāno mahānebhirvivardhitaḥ। aho hyanugṛhīto'dya dharma ebhiḥ surairiha ॥ naranārāyaṇābhyāṃ ca kṛṣṇena hariṇā tathā ॥3-321-17॥

(Of dharma the family lineage by great ones increased. Indeed surely favored today dharma by these by the gods here. By Nara and Nārāyaṇa and by Kṛṣṇa by Hari also.)
The lineage of dharma has been increased by great ones. Indeed, today dharma has surely been favored here by these gods—by Nara and Nārāyaṇa, and also by Kṛṣṇa and Hari. (3-321-17)
तत्र कृष्णो हरिश्चैव कस्मिंश्चित्कारणान्तरे। स्थितौ धर्मोत्तरौ ह्येतौ तथा तपसि धिष्ठितौ ॥३-३२१-१८॥
tatra kṛṣṇo hariścaiva kasmiṃścit kāraṇāntare। sthitau dharmottarau hyetau tathā tapasi dhiṣṭhitau ॥3-321-18॥

एतौ हि परमं धाम कानयोराह्निकक्रिया। पितरौ सर्वभूतानां दैवतं च यशस्विनौ ॥ कां देवतां नु यजतः पितॄन्वा कान्महामती ॥३-३२१-१९॥
etau hi paramaṃ dhāma kānayorāhnikakriyā। pitarau sarvabhūtānāṃ daivataṃ ca yaśasvinau ॥ kāṃ devatāṃ nu yajataḥ pitṝnvā kānmahāmatī ॥3-321-19॥

(These two indeed are the supreme abode, of which two the daily rite; the two fathers of all beings, divinity and the glorious two. Which deity indeed does one worship, or which ancestors, O great-minded one? (3-321-19))
These two are truly the supreme abode, whose daily rites are performed; they are the fathers of all beings, divine and glorious. O great-minded one, which deity does one worship, or which ancestors? (3-321-19)
इति सञ्चिन्त्य मनसा भक्त्या नारायणस्य ह। सहसा प्रादुरभवत्समीपे देवयोस्तदा ॥३-३२१-२०॥
iti sañcintya manasā bhaktyā nārāyaṇasya ha। sahasā prādurabhavatsamīpe devayostadā ॥3-321-20॥

(Thus, having thought with the mind, with devotion, of Nārāyaṇa indeed, suddenly appeared near the two gods then.)
Having thus contemplated with devotion on Nārāyaṇa in his mind, suddenly he appeared near the two gods at that moment. (3-321-20)
कृते दैवे च पित्र्ये च ततस्ताभ्यां निरीक्षितः। पूजितश्चैव विधिना यथाप्रोक्तेन शास्त्रतः ॥३-३२१-२१॥
kṛte daive ca pitrye ca tatas tābhyāṃ nirīkṣitaḥ। pūjitaś caiva vidhinā yathāproktena śāstrataḥ॥3-321-21॥

(Having been performed in the divine and ancestral (rites), then by those two having been observed, and having been honored indeed by the procedure as declared according to the śāstra.)
After the divine and ancestral rites have been performed, and after being examined by both, he is honored according to the procedure as stated in the śāstra. (3-321-21)
तं दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यमपूर्वं विधिविस्तरम्। उपोपविष्टः सुप्रीतो नारदो भगवानृषिः ॥३-३२१-२२॥

नारायणं संनिरीक्ष्य प्रसन्नेनान्तरात्मना। नमस्कृत्वा महादेवमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३-३२१-२३॥
nārāyaṇaṃ saṃnirīkṣya prasannenāntarātmanā। namaskṛtvā mahādevam idaṃ vacanam abravīt ॥3-321-23॥

After gazing at Nārāyaṇa with a joyful heart and bowing to Mahādeva, he spoke these words. (3-321-23)
वेदेषु सपुराणेषु साङ्गोपाङ्गेषु गीयसे। त्वमजः शाश्वतो धाता मतोऽमृतमनुत्तमम् ॥ प्रतिष्ठितं भूतभव्यं त्वयि सर्वमिदं जगत् ॥३-३२१-२४॥

[अवाच्यम् (avācyam) - not to be spoken; एतत् (etat) - this; वक्तव्यम् (vaktavyam) - to be spoken; आत्मगुह्यम् (ātmaguhyam) - self-secret; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal; तव (tava) - your; भक्तिमतः (bhaktimataḥ) - of the devoted; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall speak; तु (tu) - but; यथा (yathā) - as; तथम् (tatham) - so;]
(Not to be spoken this to be spoken self-secret eternal; your of the devoted O Brahman I shall speak but as so.)
O Brahman, this eternal self-secret is not to be spoken, but I shall tell it to you, the devoted one, just as it is. (3-321-27)
यत्तत्सूक्ष्ममविज्ञेयमव्यक्तमचलं ध्रुवम्। इन्द्रियैरिन्द्रियार्थैश्च सर्वभूतैश्च वर्जितम् ॥३-३२१-२८॥
yattat sūkṣmam avijñeyam avyaktam acalaṃ dhruvam। indriyair indriyārthaiś ca sarvabhūtaiś ca varjitam ॥3-321-28॥
[यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; सूक्ष्मम् (sūkṣmam) - subtle; अविज्ञेयम् (avijñeyam) - not to be known; अव्यक्तम् (avyaktam) - unmanifest; अचलम् (acalam) - immovable; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - constant; इन्द्रियैः (indriyaiḥ) - by the senses; इन्द्रियार्थैः (indriyārthaiḥ) - by the objects of the senses; च (ca) - and; सर्वभूतैः (sarvabhūtaiḥ) - by all beings; च (ca) - and; वर्जितम् (varjitam) - devoid of;]
(Which that subtle not to be known unmanifest immovable constant by the senses by the objects of the senses and by all beings and devoid of.)
That which is subtle, unknowable, unmanifest, immovable, and constant, is devoid of the senses, sense objects, and all beings. (3-321-28)
स ह्यन्तरात्मा भूतानां क्षेत्रज्ञश्चेति कथ्यते। त्रिगुणव्यतिरिक्तोऽसौ पुरुषश्चेति कल्पितः ॥ तस्मादव्यक्तमुत्पन्नं त्रिगुणं द्विजसत्तम ॥३-३२१-२९॥
sa hy antarātmā bhūtānāṃ kṣetrajñaś ceti kathyate। triguṇavyatirikto'sau puruṣaś ceti kalpitaḥ ॥ tasmād avyaktam utpannaṃ triguṇaṃ dvijasattama ॥3-321-29॥

avyaktā vyaktabhāvasthā yā sā prakṛtiravyayā। tāṃ yonimāvayorviddhi yo'sau sadasadātmakaḥ ॥ āvābhyāṃ pūjyate'sau hi daive pitrye ca kalpite ॥3-321-30॥

(The unmanifested, having the state of manifestation, which she, nature, imperishable; her source of us two know; who he, of the nature of existence and non-existence. By us two is worshipped he indeed in the divine and ancestral rites established.)
That imperishable nature, which is unmanifest and yet assumes the state of manifestation, know her as the source of both of us; he who is of the nature of both existence and non-existence is indeed worshipped by us two in the rites established for the gods and the ancestors. (3-321-30)
नास्ति तस्मात्परोऽन्यो हि पिता देवोऽथ वा द्विजः। आत्मा हि नौ स विज्ञेयस्ततस्तं पूजयावहे ॥३-३२१-३१॥
nāsti tasmāt paro'nyo hi pitā devo'tha vā dvijaḥ। ātmā hi nau sa vijñeyas tatastaṃ pūjayāvahe ॥3-321-31॥

(There is not other superior than that, indeed, father, god, or twice-born; the self indeed for us, he is to be known; therefore, him let us worship.)
There is no one superior to him, not even the father, god, or Brahmin; the self alone is to be known by us, therefore let us worship him. (3-321-31)
तेनैषा प्रथिता ब्रह्मन्मर्यादा लोकभाविनी। दैवं पित्र्यं च कर्तव्यमिति तस्यानुशासनम् ॥३-३२१-३२॥
tenaiṣā prathitā brahmanmaryādā lokabhāvinī। daivaṃ pitryaṃ ca kartavyamiti tasyānuśāsanam ॥3-321-32॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; एषा (eṣā) - this; प्रथिता (prathitā) - established; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; मर्यादा (maryādā) - boundary; लोकभाविनी (lokabhāvinī) - causing the existence of the world; दैवं (daivam) - divine (rites); पित्र्यं (pitryam) - ancestral (rites); च (ca) - and; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - to be done; इति (iti) - thus; तस्य (tasya) - his; अनुशासनम् (anuśāsanam) - instruction;]
(By him, this established, O Brāhmaṇa, boundary causing the existence of the world. Divine and ancestral are to be done, thus his instruction.)
O Brāhmaṇa, by him this boundary, which sustains the world, has been established. The performance of both divine and ancestral rites is to be done—such is his instruction. (3-321-32)
ब्रह्मा स्थाणुर्मनुर्दक्षो भृगुर्धर्मस्तपो दमः। मरीचिरङ्गिरात्रिश्च पुलस्त्यः पुलहः क्रतुः ॥३-३२१-३३॥

vasiṣṭhaḥ parameṣṭhī ca vivasvān soma eva ca। kardamaś cāpi yaḥ proktaḥ krodho vikrīta eva ca ॥3-321-34॥

एकविंशतिरुत्पन्नास्ते प्रजापतयः स्मृताः। तस्य देवस्य मर्यादां पूजयन्ति सनातनीम् ॥३-३२१-३५॥
ekaviṃśatirutpannāste prajāpatayaḥ smṛtāḥ। tasya devasya maryādāṃ pūjayanti sanātanīm ॥3-321-35॥
[एकविंशति (ekaviṃśati) - twenty-one; उत्पन्नाः (utpannāḥ) - arisen; ते (te) - they; प्रजापतयः (prajāpata yaḥ) - lords of creatures; स्मृताः (smṛtāḥ) - are remembered; तस्य (tasya) - of him; देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; मर्यादाम् (maryādām) - boundary; पूजयन्ति (pūjayanti) - they honor; सनातनीम् (sanātanīm) - eternal;]

स्वर्गस्था अपि ये केचित्तं नमस्यन्ति देहिनः। ते तत्प्रसादाद्गच्छन्ति तेनादिष्टफलां गतिम् ॥३-३२१-३७॥
svargasthā api ye kecittaṃ namasyanti dehinaḥ। te tatprasādādgacchanti tenādiṣṭaphalāṃ gatim ॥3-321-37॥

(Even those dwelling in heaven, who are some embodied beings, bow to him; they, by his grace, go to the state of the fruit ordained by him.)

ये हीनाः सप्तदशभिर्गुणैः कर्मभिरेव च। कलाः पञ्चदश त्यक्त्वा ते मुक्ता इति निश्चयः ॥३-३२१-३८॥
ye hīnāḥ saptadaśabhir guṇaiḥ karmabhir eva ca। kalāḥ pañcadaśa tyaktvā te muktā iti niścayaḥ ॥3-321-38॥
[ये (ye) - who; हीनाः (hīnāḥ) - deprived; सप्तदशभिः (saptadaśabhiḥ) - by seventeen; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - qualities; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; कलाः (kalāḥ) - parts; पञ्चदश (pañcadaśa) - fifteen; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; ते (te) - they; मुक्ताः (muktāḥ) - liberated; इति (iti) - thus; निश्चयः (niścayaḥ) - certainty;]
(Who deprived by seventeen qualities and by actions indeed, having abandoned fifteen parts, they liberated, thus certainty.)
Those who are deprived of the seventeen qualities and actions, having abandoned the fifteen parts, are certainly liberated. (3-321-38)
मुक्तानां तु गतिर्ब्रह्मन्क्षेत्रज्ञ इति कल्पितः। स हि सर्वगतश्चैव निर्गुणश्चैव कथ्यते ॥३-३२१-३९॥
muktānāṃ tu gatir brahman kṣetrajña iti kalpitaḥ। sa hi sarvagataś caiva nirguṇaś caiva kathyate ॥3-321-39॥
[मुक्तानाम् (muktānām) - of the liberated ones; तु (tu) - but; गतिः (gatiḥ) - goal; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; क्षेत्रज्ञ (kṣetrajña) - the knower of the field; इति (iti) - thus; कल्पितः (kalpitaḥ) - is considered; स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वगतः (sarvagataḥ) - all-pervading; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - certainly; निर्गुणः (nirguṇaḥ) - without qualities; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - certainly; कथ्यते (kathyate) - is described;]
(Of the liberated ones but the goal, O Brahman, the knower of the field thus is considered. He indeed all-pervading and certainly without qualities and certainly is described.)
But, O Brahman, the goal of the liberated is considered to be the knower of the field. He is indeed described as all-pervading and certainly without qualities. (3-321-39)
दृश्यते ज्ञानयोगेन आवां च प्रसृतौ ततः। एवं ज्ञात्वा तमात्मानं पूजयावः सनातनम् ॥३-३२१-४०॥
dṛśyate jñānayogena āvāṃ ca prasṛtau tataḥ। evaṃ jñātvā tam ātmānaṃ pūjayāvaḥ sanātanam ॥3-321-40॥
[दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; is perceived; ज्ञानयोगेन (jñānayogena) - by the union with knowledge; by the means of knowledge; आवां (āvāṃ) - we two; च (ca) - and; प्रसृतौ (prasṛtau) - extended; spread out; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; from there; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this way; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; तम् (tam) - him; that; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; पूजयावः (pūjayāvaḥ) - we two should worship; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal;]
(Is seen by the means of knowledge, we two also extended from that. Thus, having known that self, we two should worship the eternal.)
He is perceived through the path of knowledge; we two have also arisen from that. Thus, knowing that self, we both should worship the eternal. (3-321-40)
तं वेदाश्चाश्रमाश्चैव नानातनुसमास्थिताः। भक्त्या सम्पूजयन्त्याद्यं गतिं चैषां ददाति सः ॥३-३२१-४१॥
taṃ vedāś cāśramāś caiva nānā-tanu-samāsthitāḥ। bhaktyā sampūjayanty ādyaṃ gatiṃ caiṣāṃ dadāti saḥ॥3-321-41॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - the Vedas; च (ca) - and; आश्रमाः (āśramāḥ) - āśramas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नाना (nānā) - various; तनु (tanu) - bodies; समास्थिताः (samāsthitāḥ) - situated; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; सम्पूजयन्ति (sampūjayanti) - worship; आद्यं (ādyaṃ) - the first; गतिं (gatiṃ) - goal; च (ca) - and; एषां (eṣāṃ) - of these; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Him the Vedas and āśramas indeed, situated in various bodies, with devotion worship the first goal, and to these he gives.)
The Vedas and the āśramas, established in various forms, worship him with devotion as the original goal, and he grants them their objective. (3-321-41)
ये तु तद्भाविता लोके एकान्तित्वं समास्थिताः। एतदभ्यधिकं तेषां यत्ते तं प्रविशन्त्युत ॥३-३२१-४२॥
ye tu tadbhāvitā loke ekāntitvaṃ samāsthitāḥ। etadabhyadhikaṃ teṣāṃ yatte taṃ praviśantyuta ॥3-321-42॥
[ये (ye) - who; (plural pronoun); तु (tu) - but; (emphatic particle); तद्भाविता (tadbhāvitā) - those who are devoted to that; (tad - that; bhāvitāḥ - those who have contemplated/meditated); लोके (loke) - in the world; (locative singular of loka); एकान्तित्वं (ekāntitvaṃ) - solitude; (state of being alone; ekānti - solitary; tvaṃ - ness); समास्थिताः (samāsthitāḥ) - those who have established; (sam-āsthitāḥ - those who are firmly situated); एतदभ्यधिकं (etadabhyadhikaṃ) - this superior; (etad - this; abhyadhikaṃ - exceeding, superior); तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; (genitive plural of tad); यत् (yat) - which; (relative pronoun); ते (te) - they; (pronoun); तं (taṃ) - that; (accusative singular of tad); प्रविशन्ति (praviśanti) - enter; (pra-viś - to enter; 3rd person plural); उत (uta) - indeed; (particle);]
(Who but those devoted to that, established in solitude in the world, this superior which is of them, they enter that indeed.)
But those who are devoted to that, who have established themselves in solitude in the world, they enter that which is superior among these, indeed. (3-321-42)
इति गुह्यसमुद्देशस्तव नारद कीर्तितः। भक्त्या प्रेम्णा च विप्रर्षे अस्मद्भक्त्या च ते श्रुतः ॥३-३२१-४३॥
iti guhya-samuddeśas tava nārada kīrtitaḥ। bhaktyā premṇā ca viprarṣe asmad-bhaktyā ca te śrutaḥ ॥3-321-43॥
[इति (iti) - thus; गुह्यसमुद्देशः (guhya-samuddeśaḥ) - secret instruction; तव (tava) - your; नारद (nārada) - O Nārada; कीर्तितः (kīrtitaḥ) - has been declared; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - by devotion; प्रेम्णा (premṇā) - by love; च (ca) - and; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; अस्मद्भक्त्या (asmad-bhaktyā) - by my devotion; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - has been told;]
(Thus, the secret instruction of yours, O Nārada, has been declared; by devotion, by love, and O best of Brāhmaṇas, by my devotion also, it has been told to you.)
Thus, O Nārada, your secret instruction has been declared. Through devotion, through love, and also through my own devotion, O best of Brāhmaṇas, it has been revealed to you. (3-321-43)
